We visited this restaurant and the experience was excellent. It is a very elegant place and the food is truly delicious. From the moment you arrive, you can notice the attention to detail: the staff takes the time to ask if you have any allergies and they explain each dish you choose, which makes the experience even more special. The menu is inspired by traditional cuisine from the state of Oaxaca, but presented with a more gourmet touch. The flavors are authentic while also refined. In addition, the atmosphere is very calm and pleasant, perfect for having a conversation and enjoying your meal at a relaxed pace. It is definitely a place worth visiting if you are looking for great food and a different dining experience.

We visited on a Sunday during one of their busiest times and were pleasantly surprised that we didn’t have to wait at all — which was amazing! Everything was delicious and exceeded our expectations. The gentleman who helped me was incredibly kind and attentive. I’m assuming he was the manager since he was dressed more casually rather than in an apron or uniform. His service truly stood out. I would definitely come back again if I’m ever in downtown Houston

The service was impeccable and the food was truly outstanding. I had a reservation for two, and although my guest arrived a little late, they graciously seated me right away—something many restaurants no longer accommodate. Our server was incredibly sweet and patient, taking the time to walk us through the menu and offer thoughtful recommendations as first-time visitors. I ordered the sangria and guacamole tostadas. The tostadas were extra crunchy, but still enjoyable, and the flavors were excellent. Brunch was especially impressive—the variety alone was exciting, and they offer options to accommodate virtually every dietary preference. The location, right next to Discovery Green, provides a lovely view, adding to the overall experience. Since it was Valentine’s Day, they also had a beautiful photo backdrop set up, which was a thoughtful touch. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience with exceptional food and truly great service.

It was my first time trying Oaxacan food, and I’m glad we visited Xochi! The mole and octopus was delicious! Drinks were also creative and the cacao dessert exceeded my expectations. An absolute must try! (FYI they have valet parking which is easier and more affordable than the nearby lot parking).

Visited here with a colleague during a work trip in Houston and had a terrific experience. Everything from start to finish, including the service, was outstanding. I don’t normally have the chance to eat Oaxacan cuisine, but each dish we had was delicious. Cocktail program was also robust and had some really fun mezcal/tequila drinks to try. And the dessert was so inventive and fun!!! Highly recommend visiting if you find yourself needing a dinner spot in Downtown Houston

Xochi has a nice interior decor. Sat at the bar. Service was prompt and bartenders were nice. Ordered Xochi-rita and enjoyed it! Got the Barbacoa de Res en Zaachila and it was delicious! Meat was very tender/lean. Great for date nights/hangouts/business meetings.

Incredible food and a 90% gluten free menu. Our service was great, food came quickly. Very busy on a Friday night but we got a seat at the bar easily. Delicious food, great cocktail selection, lots of mezcal options. Cool ambiance.

We went to Xochi to celebrate my father-in-law’s birthday and had a very good experience. I ordered the Barbacoa de res de Zaachila, and the mole was the highlight—rich, well-balanced, and noticeably velvety in texture. The dish was prepared carefully and tasted exactly as it should. I also had the Spiced Pluma, which was refreshing and nicely balanced, with a gentle spice that didn’t overwhelm the drink. Service was prompt and attentive throughout the meal, and the downtown location is convenient. We enjoyed it and plan to eat there again soon. Highly recommend!

The food here was so good! Especially the Barbacoa. Probably the best piece of meat I’ve had in Houston thus far Carlos our waitress was also very good. You could tell he enjoyed his job.

Xochi is stellar! First time having purely Oaxacan cuisine and it was great. You MUST start with the Mole sampler; I didn’t even know so many varieties of Mole exist! They were all delish and so different from each other, yet I couldn't pick a favorite because I loved them all. For my main I had the Barbacoa de Res de Zaachila which I really enjoyed. The rolled tenderloin was really cool and it was just a well rounded dish. For dessert if I’m gonna get anything here it’s gonna be chocolate. So we got the Cremoso de Chocolate, some Mexican Hot Chocolate, and Churros on the side. Everything was fire and I would have again.

Diego was amazing for our anniversary! He totally went above and beyond, explaining every dish and drink so we really got to know the whole story and knew what to expect. His passion for the craft and what he does really made our dinner special. He deserves the recognition, and we recommend you request him for a wonderful experience!

Wow! Xochi was our favorite meal during our trip to Houston. We ordered the pescado (daily catch) and tostadas de camarón (sautéed shrimp on crispy tortillas) which were extremely fresh and flavorful. The protein was cooked perfectly and the vegetables and herbs paired nicely with both dishes. For drinks, we ordered the Nervous Traveller (a fantastic skinny marg) and the world’s best margarita (similar to a Cadillac marg but with aged liquor). Both drinks were excellent, and if we visit Houston again I’m certain we will at least stop by to order these same cocktails. The outdoor seating was very clean and the staff were knowledgeable and timed our dishes perfectly. We don’t normally order dessert, but we splurged since the meal was going so well. We ordered the Helado de Elote (ice cream dish made with corn custard) and it was divine. The cob molds and marigolds made for an impressive presentation, but most importantly we cleaned the plate at a competitive pace 😂 Also, my wife is gluten free and it was very refreshing to have the full menu at her disposal.

Best molé sauce I've ever had. Our server was superb. She made great recommendations, especially in the wine and dessert choices. My tenderloin was mouth-watering. The octopus was made to perfection, not rubbery at all.

Amazing food. Think all that is good in Mexican/Spaniard foods and elevate it. Finest restaurant, indeed. Presentation: 10 Taste: 10 creativity: 10 Service: 10 location: 10 lots of new spices and old ones utilized in a different manner, enhancing them. Great wine and beer selection. Outside sitting, fenced and safe for families with little ones. Very pleasant ambient. The foods and spices taste as if they're coming from the farmers straight to your table. No middleman. Everyone should have this experience at least once.

Xochi delivered an outstanding dining experience from start to finish. The barbacoa mole was rich and perfectly balanced, while the octopus was tender and beautifully charred—both dishes showcasing incredible depth of flavor. The bartenders were equally impressive, crafting cocktails with precision and genuine enthusiasm that elevated the entire evening. Between the vibrant atmosphere, thoughtful menu, and top-notch service, Xochi easily earns a spot among the city’s best spots for a memorable night out.

Absolutely stunning food in a laid-back setting. Everything mole is worth getting, but the goat tacos and the seared scallops were pretty much perfect. Great cocktails too. Special shout out to Ulises, who made the evening a surprisingly space-themed joy.

Really enjoyed this spot. I had the Costillas de Borrego (lamb chops) and my Fiancée had the Enchiladas de la Milpa V. Both plated were very good. The mole on the lamb chops was tangy and velvety and the meat was cooked to perfection. The enchiladas were equally delicious. We had their famous Cacao dessert and it looked amazing on top of tasting delicious.

Xochi’s Sunday buffet is an incredible way to taste a wide range of dishes from one of Houston’s most reputable restaurants. It’s a beautiful space and feels special the moment you walk in, which makes it perfect for a celebratory meal — especially after a big weekend or milestone. The staff were professional, friendly, and attentive throughout the entire visit. Definitely make a reservation; the buffet is popular, and there’s live music on Sundays that adds a really lovely atmosphere. The food itself was very good, with excellent flavors and a fun variety of dishes. The guacamole and cold salads were standouts — fresh, bright, and delicious. The biggest disappointment temperature: most items on the buffet were room temperature unless they had just come out steaming hot. If everything had been served hot, the meal would have been truly exceptional. It is such a shame because there is a lot of hard work that goes into the dishes: the fish was standout for me! That said, the dessert buffet was the undeniable star of the show. The variety, presentation, and flavors were all fantastic — easily one of the most memorable parts of the experience. A great way to sample the breadth of Xochi’s menu and enjoy a festive, elevated Sunday meal!

Tried multiple vegetarian options including queso de rancho, tacos, and enchiladas. Everything was okayish—flavorful but not mind-blowing. The ambiance was lovely though. But wow, the guava cheesecake totally stole the show. Creamy, balanced sweetness, tropical, and absolutely a banger dessert. Would return just for that.

Began with a mezcal Paloma that was well balanced. Had the beef cheek bar bite which was perfectly cooked, the greens were a little gritty but the fresh blue corn tortillas were incredibly perfect for leaving no mole behind. I got the mushroom and goat cheese tortilla with a different mood, also delicious. I ended my meal with a chocolate pudding with a chocolate cake that was far from a death by chocolate and more of a quiet seduction by chocolate. Very good.

We visited Xochi last night to celebrate a special occasion and were excited to continue exploring Hugo Ortega’s restaurant collection. Upon arrival, valet was prompt and efficient—$11 for the first two hours felt very reasonable, especially with easy access and visible security at the entrance. We were seated quickly, and the hostess kindly helped us find a semi-private table that suited our preferences perfectly. Our server was pleasant and answered our questions, though the overall knowledge of the menu felt limited. One nice surprise was the all-day happy hour, which was a great perk. For drinks, we ordered a gin and tonic with prickly pear and a margarita topped with jalapeño foam. The gin and tonic was fantastic—beautifully presented and reminiscent of a tiny forest in a glass, and equally delicious. Unfortunately, the jalapeño foam margarita wasn’t for me. The egg white–based foam was overpowering and masked the tequila almost entirely. We started with the ceviche de atún with cactus pear aguachile. While refreshing and visually appealing, the flavors didn’t quite live up to the presentation. The style of the chips felt awkward, and when I asked a busser about them, he admitted he didn’t know why they were served that way, which suggested a lack of staff training. Our server later explained they’re fried that way for extra crispiness. Personally, I think homemade blue corn chips would elevate both the flavor and the aesthetic, especially alongside the dish’s pink tones. For entrées, we ordered the pulpo with papas con mole and the Tlayuda de Res. The pulpo was just okay. The portion included 6 ounces of octopus, two red potatoes, and a green chorizo. The chorizo was creative and delicious, but sadly the octopus itself was chewy and rubbery. The papas con mole lacked both crispiness and sufficient mole, which was disappointing. The Tlayuda de Res was a generous portion—easily shareable—and decent overall, but it didn’t wow us. It essentially felt like a Mexican pizza. We ordered another round of drinks: Hugo’s Rita with a salt-and-pepper rim. While this is a common request in Houston Tex-Mex, the server seemed surprised by the order. Another recurring issue was the lack of explanation or storytelling behind the dishes. When spending close to $200, I expect to learn more about what I’m eating. While our server was kind, the service felt undertrained—something I’ve never experienced at Hugo’s other restaurants. They did generously bring out a complimentary congratulatory dessert, which was appreciated and tasty, though it was essentially a dressed-up vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Adding to the confusion, despite providing celebration details in advance, we were given another couple’s “Happy Anniversary” card—with their names on it. We had a good laugh and gladly accepted the extra anniversary. Overall, the food was good, portions were fair for the price, but for several reasons, we likely won’t return to this specific location. So far, Caracol remains our favorite experience, and while we still plan to try Zaranda, this visit felt like one of Chef Hugo’s less impressive offerings.

Not Mexican per se but overall pretty tasty. Very artsy and expensive place! Feels like the menu takes any opportunity to tell you about the potential insects that are infused or involved in the dishes. Queso was atypical but very tasty, they forgot to put the insects on the side, more of a cut and spread type of queso. The steak was well cooked and flavorful, the mole sauce was a great pairing. The desert menu was far too complicated. Overall food was tasty, but would have appreciated more simplicity in flavors and in menu choices. They did a great job of hosting 20+ people, service was incredible and attentive!

We decided to try Xochi’s brunch and, to our surprise, there was availability for the buffet without a reservation —but walking past the buffet immediately set the tone. The presentation was unappealing, and the selection was disappointing. As items ran out, they replaced them with completely different options rather than replenishing the original dishes which became less and less “Mexican” Everything I tried was far from authentic Mexican cuisine. The food was cold, and nothing on the buffet looked appetizing. For a $45 per person experience, the quality was shockingly poor. My $35 margarita arrived in a wine glass not even half full — an absolute rip-off. Desserts were miniature, stale, and flavorless. Conchas were hard, orejas were dry, the hot chocolate was burnt from sitting in the pot too long, mini croissants were dry, and the pistachio rose tart was solid and dry — clearly not fresh and more like something from a wholesale dessert box. For a “Mexican-forward” restaurant, the Mexican items were the biggest letdown. The only redeeming thing on the buffet was the pork skins and salsa — which says a lot. The enchiladas were visibly dry and falling apart, empanadas were soggy with a shrimp/fish filling, and taquitos were limp and no bigger than my pinky finger. Service was minimal, with a server only stopping by to refill water and drop off the check. For the price, location, and what I expected from Xochi, this was a major disappointment. I highly recommend trying a different Sunday brunch buffet — this one is not worth it.
