UW is a highly innovative school with a can-do attitude. They have a great co-op program that really helps improve your employment opportunities upon graduation. Also, I have always been impressed with their student services.

Having a great time in the university, great profs and great people. It also lives up to the hype of its difficulty as far as academics is involved. It may not have the most attractive campus, but it is easy to find your way around (and that's what is important). If you plan on going into science, math, applied health science, or engineering, I suggest taking a look at UWaterloo!

Great education but a poor place to be. Paying $8k+ per semester does not guarantee any suitable facilities, even in brand new buildings. (Broken floors 1 month into the new E7? 🤔) Get it together Waterloo. Only reason to go here is the coop. #CaliOrBust Also the geese are everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE.

Excellent faculty, diverse courses, world class degrees and a beautiful campus. Completed two degrees here. Loved it. Highly recommend. Very selective admissions, but this results in prestigious degrees. Five star institution.

The Grad House is a great bar close to the south east corner of campus. Open to the public, good diverse and healthy selections of food and craft beers from across Southern Ontario.

I was first a student and now a staff, but I have always enjoyed my time at UW. This institution is world renowned for it's beautiful campus (aggressive geese aside), it's updated and modern facilities, fantastic faculty, and all around pleasant student population. Boasting as a STEM school, UW has a multitude of quality programs available from engineering, mathematics, science, environment, and the arts - all of which are top notch. I'm not just saying this because they pay my rent, the University of Waterloo is a first class post secondary institution. Now where's my bonus? ;)

I am a recent Mathematics grad from Waterloo. Waterloo offers a range of courses and career opportunities in multiple fields. The coop program offered in most programs further prepares students for full time career and ease of finding a job right out of graduation (almost 2 years work experience right out of graduation). While the school is academically focused and challenging at times, there are always events going on around the campus and people to hang out with. It is what you make it and I think if you are career focused and want to make meaningful connections, Waterloo is the place to be.

Love my school, faculty, peers, and professors. They come from the best the front line of the industry/academy. And they genuinely care for you to be successful. Co-op could be stressful, but it’s worth a while. Go Warrior!

Great university, smart professors, high tech buildings and classrooms, has a student union with many services, numerous clubs, many food places including a 24 hr convenience store, lots of study spots in the libraries and some study spots in most other buildings.

This is a first class university. Our engineering program is second to none in Canada. Other programs, such as those in the departments of anthropology, psychology and sociology/legal studies, tend to have more complex reputations.

U of W Optometry is the place we trust for exceptional eye and vision care. It takes a bit longer for them students to test your eyes or help with new glasses, but their results are carefully checked. I enjoy the great selection of glasses including designer frames. I don't wear contacts, but I've heard great things from others. They use the latest technology and have excellent care. The students are wonderful!

It's an amazing university. You can literally watch yourself getting smarter while you study here. The faculty is really good and there are immense opportunities on campus with respect to innovation. It's a tough university and you must study extremely hard to stay here. All in all I'd say it's one of the best universities in the world.

I have my fair share of complaints about this school, okay mostly about professors who can't teach. But despite all failings, the engineering co-op program makes an education here more than worth it. It is one of the best things that has happened to me. I'm only halfway through my program but I'm starting to feel less and less like a "student", and more like a professional that happens to also be in school. I went to school there for 6 years when you could have gotten a meal for $5 from sunshine express. Had a great time there, still live close by. I love this place, even if it's just because of nostalgia. Not fun to drive around now days: if you see a BMW or some car which rims cost more than your tuition, get out of its way.

As a student visiting UW for a conference I must say it's an amazing school. Faculty and students are nice, newer areas of campus like the new engineering buildings are modern and overall the campus is kept clean. Definitely a top notch Canadian research university.

Not perfect, but the best university I could have gone to. All the profs I had first year really cared about their students and teaching. Very flexible and understanding of your circumstances. I know we get a rep as a lame academic school that never parties, but it’s not true at all. Sure we may not be like Queens or Laurier where everyone parties hard all the time, but if you want to party when you go to university you WILL ALWAYS find people to party with. It is a bit more intense than some other schools, but you are paying for an education here so you want to get the most out of it as possible. The people are also amazing and work to create a sense of belonging amount students. I made my best friends at Waterloo and we are now all living together. Just to add a couple of things about the campus: - huge campus with lots of study spaces and different facilities - we have really good indoor bridges between building to keep you warm - very lively, there are always events going on - we are actually pretty good at sports and have a HUGE sports facility - super close to tons of yummy restaurants - A LOT of geese, and they do become aggressive in the spring - actually a really gorgeous campus despite what you might believe - Dana porter library can be so beautiful to study at when you’re on the 10th floor - health services is right in the middle of campus and there is also a walk in clinic beside the uni - they keep their campus very clean - connected to the ion (train that connects uw to other places of the city) - lots of grant and scholarship opportunities - a lot of fun weird things just around campus like a museum, huge plant wall… - lots of food options for people with dietary restrictions - a super active student community that doesn’t make u cringe (check out club instagram pages) - faculties steal each other’s mascots as a fun little game and a million other little things For those who are scared to leave home: I left my home town to go to uni and I was so scared and sad, but once I got there I realized how miserable I had been at home. My point is: leaving home is so sad and straight up scary, until you leave.

Proud of being a student here. Through the coop program, you are more likely to explore the real job world a lot more than students from other universities. You will meet all kinds great people here -- the ones that study really hard, the ones that find awesome job, the ones that make a lot of friends, and the ones that have innovative ideas and want to change the world. Work load: Depends on your program, the work load will be drastically different. Most engineering programs have classes from 830am to 4pm. For engineering, its very common to have team project or lab report every single term, so teamwork is very important. Lab and equipment access: Engineering labs open 24/7 except on holidays. MME engineering also has a place where you will get free access to 3d printer, laser cutter and CNC machine. There is also a machine shop around the E5 bay area. If you want to study engineering or cs, this is one of the best universities in Canada if not the best.

Definitely a university you want to be in to get a great education for future opportunities in fields of Science, Geography, Engineering, Mathematics, and Psychology. Not so well known for smaller departments, but the heart of the Speech Communication is strong, as the teachers there, I find, are the best in the university for their knowledge, passion, kindness and care. It's fabulous that the campus is so dense with buildings - for undergrads, you have tons of classes to go to and when one course lands you on the opposite side of campus, it's no more than a 10 minute trek! Being an Honours student, my course schedule followed my (very diverse) interests and every class was in a different building! Beware the geese. They are super paranoid - I guarantee if you show fear and aggression, you will receive aggression in turn. Many have been attacked. But if you show love and courage, never backing down, they will never harm you. I once had an exam where the line for getting in the exam building (PAC) went clear out the building. It was mating season. I was stuck waiting in a crowd of geese, and one lady geese edged closer and closer to me while stuffing her face with grass. Her hubby wanted to protect her, and started hissing, spitting, and displaying extremely aggressive behaviours, getting closer and closer. The line of people moved away in fear. I looked that geese in the eye and did not budge, smiling and getting into a loving, calm mental space. The angry goose was forced closer and closer and his lady (not paying any mind) ate a path of grass in my direction. I could have sworn she was doing this on purpose! The male, now AT MY FEET, spitting onto my legs, now at the height of his aggressive display. I didn't budge, and continued to read my final exam prep notes. Once he realized his lady was in no danger, he backed off. This is my uWaterloo Goose survival story. No fear for the win!!!

Awesome attended GeeGee vs Warriors basketball game! Cousin tripped on stairs and the Waterloo staff was so caring and helpful to ensure she was ok. Only four stars due to lack of signage.... Where is the sports building? Which parking lot? How do we get there? Do we need to pay? Signs are wonderful.

TLDR (not really): Great university but not the best. Not the cheapest, either. Usefulness of degree in job-hunting depends greatly on the field you study. Difficulty too - both academic and co-op requirements. Did not party a lot - and I'm told this isn't the university for that. Degree has some prestige factor to it among employers but "useful knowledge" depends greatly on courses you pick. As for preparing me for the real world + my job: stern no. Not by a long shot. Co-op is the only reason that worked out - don't skip it. You will regret it. Support for international students is excellent and advisors are very helpful. Food around University is excellent (not healthy): definitely miss it now. If you're on the fence - do your research on job prospects before picking a major. I didn't, and it did limit what I got out of my degree. Long version: I'm not an engineering student, so my take is not relevant for that. I studied ARBUS, majoring in Econ. 2019-2024, one co-op cancelled because of the pandemic. Specialized in finance, as that's where I wanted to go after graduation. My take is double-sided. On one hand, the Econ major is pretty demanding and math heavy. Even coming from ARBUS. Very helpful, and I do think it helped me land roles on many good Co-op opportunities as a result of that. Which, in turn, helped me with post-grad opportunities. Professors were very wise and often helped answer a lot of questions on career + life, and I often found myself seeking out their advice for many things. ARBUS side of it all was a waste, however. Most courses felt like "compliance" courses - you take them because you need them to graduate. Despite being review-bombed, these courses are still forced on you. I did a minor in HR - I would say that was in-between Econ and ARBUS. As for usefulness in the real world + the job I got - my degree was objectively a crutch there. It did not help in any actual roles, though you could chalk it up to the fact that ARBUS majors tend to get involved with many different lines of work. My Co-op experiences saved me there: I can definitely say I would not be working in my present role if it weren't for the experiences I built up in Co-op. Word of advice: don't skip on Co-op. You will regret it heavily when you enter the job market, post-graduation. Support with immigration is great if you are an international student. The advisors were very attentive and gave me sound advice specific to my situation. Co-op advisors were great too - helped me land jobs and nail interviews. Food is great - the meme of Lazeez is there for a reason. Cheap too. Rent is okay - I used to stay off-campus with WCRi due to a tighter budget. If they are still around, I would recommend the A dorms. That's the cheapest rent you will get with a bus stop to everywhere right outside. Campus is beautiful, but I never got the time to explore due to always worrying about studies or job-hunting for Co-ops. Might just be me, though. If I could do it all again, I would have picked a better major. And, in that sense, UWaterloo would have delivered. But not in terms of price - I am told it would have been cheaper elsewhere. I don't look back at UWaterloo as a place of cherished memories. Or remember anything fun in the 4-ish years I spent there. And it was pretty far away from loved ones in Toronto. But as a first point of contact to Canadian life? To being an adult? And to make something out of my life? I don't think I could have asked for, or found, a better teacher.

Being a member of the U15, the group of research-intensive universities in Canada, WU is quite famous for its co-operative education programs that allows students combine their learning with relevant work experiences. A lot of students like this option as it provides them with great job opportunities that help them secure desirable jobs/professions upon graduation. The university keeps scoring and holding honorable position among many schools on the global level. The competitive culture within the school, in addition to great and well-designed programs, like the computer engineering, make Waterloo a great place to study. Innovation, entrepreneurship, and the great quality of learning make this university one of the top schools in the country. Finally, being in the heart of Waterloo is a great advantage as this city is not a crazy metropolitan, yet you're only one hour away of that craziness if you like to enjoy it every now and then! There's a room for improvement in areas like the design of some classrooms that have no windows (Math Bldg), the Athletic Complex, and the stress issue that many students keep reporting.

Great university but the environment is dangerous. I felt safer in the streets of Detroit than walking through the geese infested campus. I was once brutally attacked by an entire gang of geese who took my belongings and my dignity. Overall, I had a blast here for the tour but they waitlisted me and I didn't end up coming to this university.

The space you get for studying is really good. A lot of privacy. But the chairs are so loud in the quiet study area and the power outlets are so hard to reach.

Waterloo isn't a bad school. It has a lot of things going for it (mainly co-op). However, from my experience in Engineering, their curriculum is very limiting. If you are in one of the core Engineering programs (civil, mech, chem etc.) it's almost like you are forced to take the courses they assign you and are given very little freedom to personalize you education and actually take classes you like. They kind of just assume all the potential career paths their undergraduate engineering students will take and give them just those courses needed. This is not entirely the case for the Systems, Tron and ECE programs. (weird that most start ups come from these programs too, huh?). They get a lot more freedom with their curriculum from what i've seen. From my perspective, it looks like Waterloo prioritizes and gives more liberty to the more tech related programs. But who knows, I may be wrong. Oh well, at least you only have to put up with it 4 months at a time.

Honestly did not like it. I am an undergraduate in Engineering. Trust me in this school if you don't do coding it's a waste of time. Everybody judges each other by how much they make in their coop, if you are not in a coding job, the best you can get is in the mid of 20 dollars per hour. Then you are pitied by people who work in Cali. I have to say most of my fellow classmates are really cocky but I understand they are smart enough to do it. Doing coop is a constant struggle, four month work then four month school, I move around up to ten times in four years and I can say I am really tired of it. Anyway hopefully I can get a job after graduation in this economy and be able to afford renting a place with my own washroom, otherwise I have no idea why I attend this university. Had no life in these five years, which should be the best part of my whole life. So if I get a time machine to go back to the past, no I am not choosing it again.

Nice University Campus. Very clean and modern. Buildings are very spread out. Not as walkable as other Campuses. Not a lot of greenery and artwork.

3.5 - Good for the most part, especially during my first 2 years there. Met a lot of good people while going there. Some decent opportunities available, but you will need to learn earlier on to be competitive in the market (tough competition against some of the bigger fish in the lake). It`s okay if you can`t guareentee promising futures, but please DON`T mislead people with inflated statistics. Also, if you are going to charge a co-op fee, at least get the student`s year of study right!

Signage could be much better, especially for out of town guests. Took 30 min to find actual field and proper parking close to field. Large campus spread out. Just felt signage for visiting team family members could have been more better communicated, especially if any of them had limited mobility.

It was okay, I was expecting more based on other reviews. It's quite small, mostly just lots of rocks and minerals in cases. There was a cool game for watershed basins.

Education wise, don't come here if you're not in co-op or CS basically. There are some decent co-op positions available even for non-CS majors but you have to play the system well; unfortunately it's kind of something you have to learn as you go. I hated the campus. The weather is depressing. The buildings are depressing. I've visited UBC, UofC, UofT, USask, Queen's, McGill, and probably some other campuses that I'm forgetting, just to give you an idea that I've seen a variety of schools across the country (and a few other campuses in other countries). UWaterloo is the ugliest campus I have ever seen. Enjoy the few good spots in the few good months (spring term) if you're even around (most students aren't). Don't underestimate the value of aesthetics in your quality of life. You're the one who has to walk through it every single day. I never visited the school before I accepted my offer and I regretted it. If you're a prospective student seriously visit the campuses before you decide on a school.

NEVER COME HERE FOR ARBUS. The co-op is impossible to get and you won’t learn anything that you can apply to your career. I was in Honours Art and Business and I learned nothing, I tried to switch into FARM but the process is almost impossible and the advisors give you the wrong advice or don’t know what they are talking about. Trying to do your own research is impossible because the school website is a mess. I ended up having to transfer schools.

For some reason these clowns made a huge fuss about Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and pushed for it to be banned from Canadians. I’d love to push for the University of Waterloo to be banned instead.

If you're looking for community and school spirit, this place probably isn't for you. If you're looking for academic excellence and state-of-the-art research (unless you're in a few specific STEM fields), this place isn't really for you. If you're looking for a place to complete your degree so you can get a job and you don't care about academia, this place is what you want.

I was promised by the University on last open house that they will provide a co-up during the Nano technology engineering program but %20 of the first year students have been able to get co-up. It is totally wrong and unacceptable.

Many student-fooling taxpayer-mooching profs here have been dragging down the school's teaching quality for years. High-quality profs can illuminate even the most complex of theories, but at UWaterloo even simple ones are often obfuscated by layers after layers of gratuitous vague glosses bloviated by many ill-qualified profs. UWaterloo's teaching quality indicator scored merely 35.8 out of 100 on the 2020 THE ranking (a fail even by the most lenient standards), although its reputation indicator score was remarkably high. A paradox? No. Its much-hyped reputation is mostly network-based (i.e. like other large public institutions, it produces a very large batch of graduates every year who work everywhere around the globe) and thus has little to do with solid and substantial academic prestige as do real universities like the Ivy League. Also, many applicants were deceived into thinking it's a real "university" when it doesn't even have a business school, a law school, a medical school, or a proper design school for that matter. The "Faculty of Health Sciences", for instance, is a placeholder medical school that doesn't even have a real M.D education (and believe it or not, there's a university that would throw a major like 'Leisure studies' in there). There is no such thing as a "Faculty of Math" as Mathematics, along with its specializations, properly belongs to the College of Arts and Sciences as one single major/sub-department. A fully-fledged business school should have a professional MBA program in addition to majors such as Real Estate, Finance, Marketing and Management. A Law School should have Juris Doctor (J.D.) programs. As a public university funded by the taxpayers: Either deliver better quality teaching to the taxpayers, or dismantle all the placeholder courses/programs/departments to help ease taxpayer burdens, instead of spending more dollars on sanctimonious politically-engaged talks of social justice.

Campus buildings shivering cold during winter yes even winter, and then personally find too cold during spring term; wall clung thermostats don't work /they intentionally shut off. Halls and any adjacent prof/lab rooms or washroom all getting sprayed with chemicals; these chemicals fill air and lungs of classroom sitten students. Not only that. They douse chemicals onto classroom desks plenty of times a day. Chemical doused desks especially reek up the nose. So vile. Vile act... Uni is administering noxious chemical substances (a criminal offense) but getting away with it. Breathing chemicals is known to cause brain damage and can lead to memory loss (we're made to breathe chemicals in for multi hours a day per week per semester!), yet these boneheads cough cough president Vivek Goel, spending our dollars on ever-increasing chemical supplies and overnight janitors when instead they should be spending our those dollars for well-fitted high-end ventilation system into ALL CLASSROOMS OF ALL BUILDINGS, circulating clean air ALL DAY AND NIGHT TOO (like how done in washrooms where persons poop you can't smell)!! There was even asbestos instance in a certain campus building, been told by janitor in more than one room!!!!!There should be a health inspector brought here to check for asbestos and measure toxicity of indoor air (..I 'smell' a class action lawsuit if uni president and uni operators don't change, and change real soon).

Don't go here. It's just a degree mill institution with poor educational quality and a very corrupt administration. It's a horrible place to be with a bad environment with ugly buildings and socially backwards as well. Trust in yourself and not anyone's rankings or ratings. For example, Bill Gates being here was a long time ago and the place is very different now in a negative way, unfortunately. Their co-op program is a lot worse nowadays as well, offering jobs that may pay little or nothing, that people are not qualified for, or are not relevant or related to what that person is studying, making it very difficult sometimes to actually be useful to you, while costing at least $600 extra a term, whether you get a job or not.

There needs to be girls bathrooms. It is disgusting to go to the bathroom and sit in a puddle of pee. It is unfair to anyone who has to sit to pee. If you have to stand up, there should be a bathroom for you, if you have to sit to pee there should be a separate bathroom from those who stand and pee all over the toilet and floor. This is horrible treatment and abuse! People who sit to pee are discriminated against.

A typical rac*** environment for middle-eastern men. There are systemic and systematic racism and discrimination guarded by both safety office, particularly a racist named andrew sheifle or something like that, also center for equity, a matt erickson or something like that. An absolute "undergraduate" institution who's no business for offering graduate degrees. Also be very careful not to be fooled by a jeremy boer, he'd misdirect you and prevent you from filing any racism cases. It's also safety office, kyle daun + michael collins + jan huissoon essentially a ring of racism and discrimination at uwaterloo. terrible rac*** european female staff and faculty. but a good environment for europeans, maybe undergrads (for their great marketing effort), for east asians and maybe other common wealth countries. also be careful not to be fooled by their false marketing. nothing close to mcgill or utoronto or even ubc. maybe lakehead or something like that.

It is absolutely outrageous that this university is keeping vaccine mandates and masking while the rest of the province is ending these mesures. Does this administration think they are above the law?! They should be taken to court fast.

Terrible school where politics matters more than integrity and money matters more than students, IMO. Don’t get me wrong, there are more good profs than bad profs here, but I still won’t recommend this institution to anyone — unless they cannot get accepted somewhere else. A number of UW students committed suicide in the past few years.

First established on May 13, the encampment was designed to pressure the university to cut all financial and academic connections with Israel and companies tied to its war effort. But when she saw her name printed on the lawsuit, Ahmed said she was overcome by a “feeling of shame”. The lawsuit is believed to be the first of its kind: Never before had a Canadian university launched a seven-figure complaint against its own students for protesting a war. Drake, the political science professor at the University of Waterloo, said the legacy of these student protests will be a mixed bag. On one hand, she believes the heavy-handed tactics used by universities set a “very bad example”. She told Al Jazeera that their actions against the protesters ran “contrary” to their efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion on campus. That, in turn, leads to “distrust” and a feeling of unease. “They are threatening — at least [with] implicit threat, if it’s not an explicit one — that they will call the police on students and predominantly on racialised students who we know are subjected to systemic racism and violence,” Drake said. Sarweh said the university should not feel “emboldened and arrogant”, simply because the encampment ended. He expressed confidence that the students’ pro-Palestine activism would continue, even after the lawsuit was withdrawn. “I’m not scared of them. I think none of us are.”

I did engineering here from 2013-2018. If you want to pursue higher education for your love of learning and the endeavor to expand human knowledge, I can't recommend UW engineering less. If you want to become a software engineer, I can't recommend UW engineering more (or you could attend another trade school).

I am really shocked that such things happen in universities here n professors knowingly do not care . It’s so unfare who work hard and honestly give there quizzes n tests while those full time cheating in diff ways during tests excel . The examiner knowingly doesn’t take any action . I can’t believe this is happening in such a big university . Extremely unfare for hard working kids
