Opinions de Hoffman House Kingston
We were traveling through the area and they were kind enough to fit us in at the last minute. Food and service were both great! The only negative was the temperature. It wasn't oppressively hot, but warm. Seeing how well maintained this historic building is, offset the lack of air conditioning. We probably should have opted for an outdoor table. The fisherman's platter (pictured) was delicious!
Note: Pictures are rather unflattering because of the dimly light dining room (I loved that about the room). Fantastic dinner here. Love the old, rustic feel of the building. The french onion soup was spectacular. The duck was also amazing. Finished with the creme brulee. Overall 5/5. Would recommend.
Planned on eating at the Beekman Arms where we were staying. Was told the resturant was closed only a few options for take out. A very nice person sitting in the lobby said they had the same experience and recommended the 15 min. drive to Kingston. So glad we did. Great old building, great food, beautiful fire in the fireplace. Everything we were hoping for. We will go back again!
Am excellent choice for a local restaurant with talent in the kitchen. I highly recommend the garlic buttered steak, a house specialty. The Hoffman House is an original structure from the revolution. The interior is multi room and the restroom is up a set of stairs which might offer some difficulty for some. I would definitely come here again.
I got the Hoffman burger and it was excellent! My husband got the pork chop with bernais sauce. The chop was fine but the sauce was the star. Very good food and the service was great too. Our waitress was very kind and funny
A charming, historic old house complete with plaster walls and wide plank flooring, repurposed as a restaurant. The food was great, the service was excellent, the prices reasonable. I highly recommend the Thai chicken wrap.
Great dinner once again. We go from NYC just to eat there. The food , the historic atmosphere and the service is top notch. Recommend the lamb and duck. Made to perfection. On this trip Jana was out server and she was attentive and super friendly. She deserves recognition for her quality service. All the times we have visited the service is always impeccable. We will return this fall and recommend to our friends in the area. The long time owners are there and always go above and beyond to maintain the highest standards. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
We had our groom's dinner here. Most of us were late to the dinner, due to an emergency involving one of the guests, and they were extremely understanding and accommodating. The servers were top notch, and very friendly. The food was delicious, and every guest was very happy with their meal. They gave us a private dining room, and made it the beginning of a wonderful weekend.
We had a wonderful evening at the Hoffman House! Started out with some finely crafted Cosmo’s. Next we had some coconut shrimp which was crispy and moist. My husband had the rack of lamb which he deemed superb. My salmon was grilled to perfection. Our server Laura was the best! I would recommend going there and we will surely be back. Thanks for a great night!!
First time at the Hoffman House, but will be back! We ate out on the covered patio on a very warm August afternoon, but were comfortable. Service was great, food was delicious and reasonably priced. A variety of lunch choices, almost too hard to choose - they all sound fantastic! The Reuben sandwich was one of the best tasting I’ve had, south of Montreal! No complaints from the others in our party about their lunch choices (steak sandwich, quiche, lamb sandwich)! The interior of the stone building is just magnificent, a throwback to another time in Kingston’s historic past! On-site parking, too.
Delicious fresh food, excellent service and nice atmosphere. Loved the duck, salad & bacon wrapped scallops
Truly an historic inn with a great atmosphere and charm! We felt like we were taken back to the late 18th century! The food was very good, but the service was a bit slow.
I’ve been coming here for about 4 years because of the food + the historic structure. I mean you’re having dinner in a stone house from the 1700s. The burgers are great. Lately I’ve been having a rigatoni dish with sausage and chicken (no shrimp. I don’t like shrimp). It’s so good that it’s been my go to for awhile. If you want something less filling try Kasey’s Chicken. Also very yum chicken with artichokes. This is a special occasion kinda place that, after you try it, easily becomes a regular haunt.
Stellar atmosphere. Even the old New England interior as I walked upstairs to the restrooms. Moody whimsical outside seating. Food was an excellent mix of tavern food, sea food, and pasta. Staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The best meal I've had in Kingston.
Had a very nice lunch with a group of 6 the other day outside on the patio. Everyone said their food was excellent with zero complaints. Our waitress Loraine was top notch. All in all a wonderful afternoon meal. It was my first time patronizing Hoffman house. But I have a feeling it won't be my last time.
The coconut chicken was delicious, not oily as I might have expected for a coconut crusted meal. The accompanying rice with subdued sun dried tomatoes was surprisingly delicious too. Salad was really fresh, service was friendly and attentive. Eating out on their lawn on a cool summer evening also added to the experience.
We so enjoyed dinner with outside seating on the lawn! Weather was perfect and so was the food. Excellent pasta, steak and seafood. All four in our party were very impressed 👌. Scallops marsala over angel hair was especially good. House dressing on salad also notably delicious 😋
Great place. I almost passed the opportunity to eat there for the mis-impression it would be fancy and expensive. At least lunch time, is reasonably priced and the food is unbelievable delicious. Friendly service at a gorgeous historic building.
Great food. And compared to other restaurants, they haven't raised their prices to outrageous levels. Pleasant upscale dinner. However the seating is arranged very crowded. Don't go when they're very busy.
Great atmosphere and great food! I went for lunch last Tuesday with a friend, and again this Tuesday with my father for his birthday. The place was packed both times but the service was still on point. $12-$14each for a Reuben, French Dip, and Philly Cheesesteak w/ fries. Can't beat that! This place remains a treasure in Kingston
Coming from Brooklyn/Queens area with arguably a melting pot of the best food in the world I was expecting to be underwhelmed. This place is unexpectedly wonderful and I’ll be back every single time I pass through to go taste their entire menu. They’re not only kind people from front to back of house, but the food was prepared perfectly. I got the French Onion Soup and bacon-wrapped scallops. There’s something in that soup, yall! Something noteworthy. The scallops were the perfect texture throughout. Not spongy or wet on the inside, but delicate like they meant it. The bacon was in full crunch-mode on the outside of the scallop but not burnt anywhere. Well friggin done! The staff seems genuinely happy to be there, and that’s always my litmus test for anywhere overall. Good job to management, too.
Very quaint bar & restaurant built in the late 1600’s. The wide plank floors and exposed floor joists sure add a warmth of old charm to your meal. I was pleasantly surprised on their takes on custom sandwiches durning lunch time. I chose the grill lamb & onion sandwich which was perfect size to just fill yah up on a cold spring day.
Great food, always consistent and delicious. The duck was great as usual, and the chicken picata loaded with tasty sauce auce. My wife loved the smokey cider coctail special. Lorayne, a long-time server, was very attentive and friendly. Love the cozy old-fashioned atmosphere and blazing fireplaces.
Came here for dinner after I went on the Hudson river cruise and trolley museum the food was absolutely delicious and the staff was very friendly and extremely kind they really go out of there way to ensure that what you order is what you get. The historical part of this place makes it feel like your stepping back in time hundreds of years ago and lets your experience come alive with the area being near the old Dutch church. I had the steak sandwich and ordered it medium well and they cooked it correctly which doesn't happen to often realistically speaking. Your have to pay for public parking but it's well worth the trip just make sure you enter through the side entrance as the staff will direct you. I also love how on each table they have a small little light that you can turn on if you need more spotlight to read the menu very clever.
We were out shopping and asked the salesperson where was a good place to eat and they recommend the Hoffman House. We were seated right near the fireplace to warm up from being outside. Our waitress Sam was very friendly and prompt. I had the fish and chips while Hubby had the Chicken Fettucine special. Both were excellent! The homemade cheesecake was delicious. So if you are in the area give this a try, I'm glad we did!
Loved it! Great atmosphere, reasonable prices, delicious food.
Went on Valentines Day and this beautiful, old rustic inn had their tables decorated with candles and flowers with the lights on low. The service was very good from start to finish with wine glasses never empty to each course following the other. The food was impeccable. Started with the coconut shrimp and lobster bisque. Then salad with the best house dressing I've had and warm Italian breads. Main course was perfectly cooked leg of lamb with a twice baked potato. Dessert was a tiramiso that was on par with the best I've ever had. All in all it was a very exceptional experience!
It was my son's birthday and we needed to take him out for dinner so we figured to try out your restaurant. We were not disappointed. Wonderful food and the waitress was excellent. You now have a new customer. Thank you.
The perfect end to a wonderful day in Kingston. Loved the cozy atmosphere, and the steak nachos - recommended by my lovely waitress whose name I unfortunately didn’t get - were fantastic. Carrot cake was great, too. And nice tea options - no boring Lipton here! Would love to come back next time I’m in town.
Great historic place to eat a hearty meal. My husband and I had lunch there and our food came out piping hot and with generous portions. It was all very delicious! The service was good too; our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. Such a fun place to go--you will truly feel as though you have stepped back into colonial times when you slide into your seat in one of the rustic high-back booths. Highly recommend.
Good food at a fair price. We go to the Hoffman House regularly, the food is consistently tasty, the staff is lovely, and the atmosphere is historic. Think of classic American style bar/restaurant, nothing fancy they are just playing the hits.
Attended a reenactment event in Kingston and went here for dinner. We had a great time. It was fantastic. The downside was that there were many reenactors because the food and atmosphere are so nice and fit the revolution period. This led to a very busy kitchen which did an amazing job of keeping up. They were able to provide one of my party with gluten free options and noted her needs, and provided great food for all.
1st time tonight (Sat) at Hoffman’s. Great place; Tons of charm from this historical 350 yr old bldg with gorgeous old plank floors and beams. They did it all right for a very fair price. Lighting was right. Noise level was ok. Plenty of attentive friendly servers. Warm bread w/ soft butter. Excellent side salad (incl’d w/ dinner) that had 2 types of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, even chick peas. Very good calamari and delicious entrees. The cocktails weren’t watered down and the glass of Montepulciano tasted great. Even the shared tiramisu at the end was good. Highly recommend this place. Kudos to the owner, kitchen crew and staff.
Burgers are great even if the miss the mark occasionally on temperature and over cook it. The burger is still juicy and has a nice char. French onion soup is also pretty good. I cannot remember a time I've had a bad meal.
Very nice place! I've been here twice for lunch and dinner. They have a lot of nice food options and good prices. Food quality and quantity are great. Nice atmosphere. A lot of time to chat with friends/family because it does take a while for food to come out but still worth it
Can't get better. It is exactly what it wants to be. That was my Friday lunch experience. I sat outside with my love on a warm spring day. Had a roast beef dip and a London broil sandwich between us . In house cooked roast beef , rare London broil and a crisp cold draft. The prices are slightly lower than expected for fresh food.
Amazing food. Even the rice is flavorful and there's always something new to try. I came back twice already and the second time did not disappoint. I like to try different places but I may just have to come here if we're ever in the area. Desserts are very good too, my group really enjoyed the tiramisu.
The atmosphere, the food, and the service were impeccable. When everyone cleans their plate, you know the meals were delicious and nothing but. Beautiful atmosphere in a historic building that was lovingly refurbished by the previous owners. Outside seating available. Locals love this place, and you will also.
Really cool place. Our servers were great and fun. The bar is cozy and well stocked! I definitely would eat there again!
Such a cool, old spot. Food was delicious & our bartender, Pedro, was happy to give us a little bit of history about the place!
Very cozy, verging on crowded when it's even moderately busy. Very old-school vibe, as befits the venue. Food was great.
We have been coming here since it opened. The food is always consistent and the atmosphere is welcoming. It can get loud when crowded, but it's part of being out with friends and having fun.
Arrived on a Friday afternoon and quickly found parking across the street as their lot was full. Got seated right away and our waitress was very pleasant. I’m pretty sure I read the building was built in the 1600’s which is just incredible. You can just feel the history in there! We were there during lunch hours but the kitchen agreed to make us calamari from their dinner appetizer menu which was so kind. It was crispy and delicious. My husband had the French dip with sweet potato fries and said the sandwich was one of the best he’s had. I had the lamb sandwich which is such a unique offering I had to order it! Also delicious and cooked to a perfect medium rare. We would highly recommend it!
Here’s a quick NED review for Hoffman House: --- ✅ What Works Well - Classic American comfort food with generous portions. - Cozy, welcoming atmosphere with friendly service. - Good variety of menu options including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. - Reasonably priced and great for casual dining or family outings. --- 👎 What to Watch Out For - Some dishes may be a bit hit-or-miss in flavor or consistency. - Can get busy during peak meal times, so expect some wait. --- 🎯 Verdict Hoffman House is a solid spot for hearty, traditional meals in a comfortable setting—great for a no-fuss dining experience. Rating: ~3.5 to 4 / 5
What a quaint place, a stone house from the 1600's turned into a restaurant. The French onion soup was exceptional, I had the lamb sandwich my friend had the sliced steak, both excellent! Dessert was the finishing touch! I travelled down from the north my friend from the south, we grew up across the street from one another, and we had a nice time catching up!
The other half and I stopped in after running an errand in Kingston. The food was pretty good for lunch fair, service was a little on the slow side. The drinks were standard. But the ambiance was fantastic. The decor and feel of a 1600's inn was pretty cool. I would definitely go back and try another meal there.
Recommended by a kind soul we met while walking in town. We had the steak and pasta. Came with salads and I thought the salad was very fresh. The steak was a little overdone but tender enough for medium rare. The onion and mushroom sauce was delicious. Pasta has a little spice and it was great. Recommended.
The historic atmosphere gives it so much charm and character, like stepping into a beautifully preserved moment in time. The roast duckling was cooked to absolute perfection *chef’s kiss* tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented (mushrooms added to my taste). Paired it with a Rönig Dom Hudson beer, which completely lived up to the hype. Crisp, smooth, and just right for a relaxed, satisfying meal. A special shoutout to our amazing server, Angel - so warm, patient, and truly attentive. He made the whole experience even more enjoyable by actively listening to our requests and making us feel completely taken care of.
b.overly_delicious @hoffmanhousetavern Kingston,NY: So i’m embarrassed to say, I’ve never been to the Hoffman House. Like ever! Some close friends of mine, finally dragged me in to experience the colonial pilgrim vibes of the original stockade. Checked the menu online and couldn’t believe the prices! Everyone in our group had the French onion soup. Below the gooey mozzarella (I believe) lies a deep bowl of black pepper and onion broth. Very good and very much pepper forward. So much so, you little get a chew of peppercorns in your mouth after each bite. I love black pepper so this was fine with me. Rueben and fries ($12), Bacon cheeseburger ($14), and the garlic steak sandwich ($13.5) all served with fries were properly portioned for the price. This must be the best deal in town! Absolute deliciousness! Garlic steak stacked with garlic butter dripping out of the roll and smeared with blue cheese. The standard battered fries were seasoned which I haven’t seen before (my favorite frozen variety). Waitress was extremely pleasant and accommodating. This place is like stepping back in time but not the 60s, 70, or even 50s. We are talking 1800-1700s. Felt like a real pilgrim. Very cool historic house with beautiful creaking wood floors and staircase. Great ambiance, diverse drink and food menus, and excellent service. Each table had unique, modern lighting that doubled as a bluetooth speaker so you can dine to your own music. The French onion soup and roast duck were amazing. Would definitely dine here again. NOTE: Set aside enough time to dine here because we planned for about an hour and a half but we were there for two hours and had to skip dessert orders to get to our next destination. I would have loved to try their desserts, they sounded amazing!
Hoffman House in Kingston, NY, seamlessly weaves history, ambiance, and culinary excellence into a memorable dining experience. The historical setting, complete with a charming fireplace, sets the stage for a delightful meal. I recently sampled the steak sandwich with curly fries, and it was a culinary masterpiece. The perfect blend of flavors and textures left a lasting impression. The chicken with Cesar salad was equally impressive, showcasing freshness and meticulous preparation. The diverse selection of teas and cocktails added a touch of sophistication to the meal, catering to a range of preferences. The thoughtful combination of beverages complemented the overall dining experience. What truly elevated my visit was the impeccable service. Lorayne's attentiveness and courtesy were exemplary, enhancing the enjoyment of every moment. The staff's dedication to providing exceptional service is evident, making Hoffman House stand out. In summary, Hoffman House is a culinary haven that I wholeheartedly recommend. Whether you're drawn by the historical charm, diverse menu, or top-notch service, this restaurant in Kingston, NY, promises a delightful experience. I can't wait to return and explore more of its culinary delights.
We made a stop in along our journey into Kingston and saw this cool and old looking building that just so happened to be a tavern. The service was great and the food was delicious. Highly suggest opting for the French Onion soup as it was the perfect appetizer. I went for the Caesar Salad without croutons and was told the Fish and Chips was the best my lunch date ever had. We would come back through New York just to dine here again.
Hoffman House could be a 5 star place simply because of the historical significance of the building, but the food was really good as well! The French onion soup was good. I got the crispy roast duck, which was delicious. My only dings was that only parts of the skin were crispy, and it would be nice to have a vegetable side in addition to the rice/potato side too. My wife got the scallops marsala and that was also delicious, with a good portion of scallops and a tasty marsala sauce! We got the apple cobbler for desert and that too was really good! The staff was friendly and welcoming. Service was a little slow especially given that there wasn't a crowd when we got there for dinner, but we were in no rush. All in all a great meal. Highly Recommended!!
Had a delightful early dinner this week in this historical building! Lots of temptations on the menu. So many interesting entrees that we will be going back to try more! Great service, interesting special cocktails, ( Vodka lavender lemonlade), so many choices! We settled on the Steak au Poivre and the Roast Duck du jour special. Delish! We both chose the twice baked potato as our side and a nice salad with homemade dressing. We split the house special creme brulee! Can't wait to go back!
Very cool atmosphere! Service was very friendly but a little slow. Food was really good!! I had the quesadille special. Bonus-is this place haunted?? Pretty sure I captured a ghost picture!
Food is amazing, I had the leg of lamb it was great flavor and a good size portion. Other family members had the steaks each one was cooked perfect and they all enjoyed them. Our only complaint was service was slow, but they were busy and probably understaffed like everyone else.
The entrance is at the side of the building. It is not well marked. The hostess stand was not manned which added to the confusion. Though we did not have reservations we were seated right away. The Hoffman House is a wonderful historic building. The dining areas inside reminded us of Colonial Williamsburg. The patio was lit with miniature lights and was cozy. The wait staff was attentive, but it took sometime to get the food. The food was wonderful and worth the wait. Upon locating the restaurant we noticed a for sale sign in the side lawn. Hopefully, Hoffman House will be able to continue in its noble tradition.
The service was excellent. Both the hostess and waitress were great. The patio is nice and you should eat outside if the weather accommodates. The food is cooked well and the bread was delicious. The history of the building is impressive. The menu does feel dated, and the portion sizes can be 40% smaller. The building was a home and so the rooms you eat in are smaller and a little awkward. The tall booths in the first room feel dated and that room is under-lit. Some dark paintings on the wall feel historic but also gloomy. The dishes are comfortable but are in need of some rethinking, but the service was great and the place is a historic gem, so 3.5 becomes 4 stars.
One of my favorite places to go because of the historic nature of the building. Have to say the service was bit slow though very pleasant. The clams casino were the smallest I think I have ever seen. The steamed class were really good. The fisherman's platter was good although the salmon being marinated with soy sauce did nothing for it. Overall, I still consider this place worth the time to get there and had a really good time.
This is an old and interesting building that makes a history lover's heart skip a beat. The service was warm and efficient. The menu had something for everyone but was not overwhelming. The food was served fresh and the perfect temperature, with a nice presentation. There is outdoor seating and tent seating as well as indoor dining. Ample parking is around the back. I enjoyed a rainy night in a charming restaurant!
Came for lunch with a group of friends. Service was appropriate, allowing for the time we needed. Sandwiches were generous, several of us took half home. Great horseradish dip for the sweet potato fries.
Atmosphere looked great, smelled amazing! My pregnant wife and I after driving for over an hour would have loved to try it but they said they couldn't seat us without a reservation 🤷
Thoroughly enjoyed the food and patio experience for lunch yesterday. Unfortunately, it took more than a half hour for our food to be served after ordering. Other diners were receiving orders 10-15 minutes after ordering. Not sure what happened with our order of two wraps. Server never explained or apologized.
What a nice place. It was a very nice experience. We was on vacation and ended up in the Hoffman house. When you come in you clearly can see it is a old original house with a lot of levels and several dining arras which I think is in the moment with covid definitely a plus. They also have a nice covered outside area with heaters. The food was really good . We had french onion soup, calamari, seafood risotto and chicken and everything was very good. The only thing we didn't like the oily balsamic dressing for the salad. The waitress we had was very nice and attentive
3 starsfor the friendly servers and the atmosphere. Very long wait on the food, and the quality was lower than what I'm used to getting for that kind of price in the area. Everything we got was bland, and the seafood was so overcooked it was tough. Also ordered a simple cocktail and it was terrible. I would recommend beer and the tavern menu only. The building is cool, but I will not go back for a special occasion.
Friendly service in a beautiful, intimate, romantic, and historical setting. Unfortunately that is as far as it goes as the food ranges from mediocre to bland; the meal I had tonight had virtually no flavour at all. Worse still the Chardonnay I had was the absolute worst I have ever had in 25 years of drinking wine; three sips and I just left the rest. All this being the case I would say give the place a try if you would like a meal served by friendly staff in a fabulous atmosphere, but don't expect much from the kitchen.
Rustic setting, very good service, high noise level. Overall the food seems to vary from OK (special beef dish of the day) to quite good (seafood dishes). Large portions that all come with a salad. Bread is offered and is really good. Fair value
The wait staff did not keep up on empty water glasses or what our needs might be. They were very friendly. I ordered a bake potato, even had a discussion about butter and sour cream for the potato, and instead, I got a died double baked potato that lacked flavor with no butter or sour cream. I had a crusted chicken, and the battery crust was thicker than the chicken and overwhelmed the dish. I could not eat it all due to the breading. I will not return. The cost was not in alignment with the poor quality. They also used white cloth napkins that when I got up to leave left my dark pants speckled with white napkin lint.
The history drew us to this restaurant on a cold, windy Tuesday night. It was packed. I ordered fish and chips, and my husband ordered the Hoffman burger. My fish was fair. Thin deep fried almost no flavor. My husband really liked his burger.
Food was very tasty. My clam soup had sand it like every spoonful chopping down on sand/ clamshells tiny particles. My red wine was good , until I finished the glass it had some kind of particles in the bottom of the wine glass like sand. When I informed the head chef, he just walked away with his head down and never came back to the table.
Slow (though friendly) service. Bacon-wrapped scallops were mediocre.( I would be amazed if they had actually been cooked fresh, vs.frozen). Tap beer was barely cold. Chicken satay was just okay, sauce was too soupy. Nice old house and outdoor seating.
Service needs to be improved. We had reservations and still had to wait. It's a charming old establishment but it appears to be run by new owners. Food was satisfying. It does get a bit smoky due to the fireplace. You smell while you're eating. Not far from our Airbnb.
We went because we read the recommendations and other restaurants we wanted to visit were opening later. I don't recommend it. It's an old, run-down place. You could see the kitchen upon entering, and it was dirty. The food wasn't too bad, but it wasn't good either. I got the impression the place was dirty.
Just not what it used to be. Today was the last time I’ll ever eat here. This is the third strike. I’ve been enjoying this restaurant my whole life and lunch has always been a solid go to. But this is it. Service is so ridiculously slow for no reason. Today they were still setting up the restaurant when we arrived well after opening. The servers and manager were assembling the lunch menus when we arrived. We were given a seat and menus were thrown down on the table in front of us. No drink order taken, no water, no other greeting for at least five minutes. Manager/owner was looking at phone at the bar while we waited for a greeting of some kind or a glass of water. The staff was passing back and forth, actively ignoring us. Finally our waiter arrived and the order was taken. There were about two or three other tables in the restaurant and the piece of quiche and sandwich we ordered took a long time to come . Drinks came out just as slow as the food and the server put cans on the table for customer to open themselves. The whole experience was just meh. And this being the third time I was actively ignored while the restaurant was not busy at all. You lost a longtime customer.
We just had dinner there. Our reservation was at 5:15. We left over two hours later. The wait between our salads and our main course was an hour. Our waiter apologized twice as the table next to us, who came in 30 minutes later, had appetizers, salads and main courses while we were waiting. Every table around moved much faster and flipped. No manager came to apologize. No one offered us free desserts or a discount on the bill. No one apologized when they finally brought the food. Whoever brought our bill and picked it up (not our friendly server) dropped it on the table rudely, like we had done something wrong. I’ve had delayed courses before, but I’ve never had such a delay be ignored by management like this. The food was great when we finally got it, but whoever is managing tonight really dropped the ball. We should have at least gotten an apology for that hour long wait, if not free dessert or a discount. Very disappointed.
I went to the Hoffman House expecting excellent cuisine. When you think of a tavern you think excellent food, warm atmosphere and ambience. The food was presented nicely. However when eating what was supposed to be a shrimp pasta dish with sauce, it was flavorless. we young woman who served me, not my original server, I was cordial and sweet. After reading the reviews online I chose this restaurant. However, once taste in their daily special, I cannot recommend the food at all.
I always loved Hoffman house, last time we went on my birthday service was horrible! So horrible I'm not going back!! People seated after us got their meals first, drinks came out 30 minutes after ordered, food we waited an hour...and the fact that you don't offer a desert with a candle for people on their birthday shame on you! Lost a great customer...
It was my husband’s 60th birthday, and after a lot of research, we chose this restaurant because of its high ratings. We drove two hours to get there. We ordered coconut shrimp as an appetizer, but my husband said the taste was off, so he didn’t eat it. I added lemon juice, but I still couldn’t taste much. I ordered lamb, and the waitress asked how I wanted it cooked. I requested medium-rare. My husband ordered a turkey burger. When the salad arrived, it was disappointing—the greens looked like they’d been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days, and the cherry tomatoes were rotten. I told the waitress, and she offered to replace it, but I declined since I saw similar salads at other tables. After quite a long wait, our main courses arrived. My lamb was overcooked, and my husband’s turkey burger was cold. I was extremely disappointed, especially given that it was such a special occasion. The waitress offered to bring me a new lamb, but I didn’t want to make the day worse, so I declined. While we were discussing the food, a man approached our table and introduced himself as the owner. He talked nonstop, causing our food to get colder, and we lost what little appetite we had left. In the end, we sent both plates back and asked for the check. When the check arrived, there was a 15% discount. I told the owner it was my husband’s birthday, but he didn’t even say “Happy Birthday.” We tried to explain our issues with the food, but none of the excuses were satisfying. I truly believe the Hoffman House doesn’t deserve its high ratings, given the poor quality of the food and the disappointing customer service.
I have eaten horrible food before but this place was absolutely disgusting! Steak and eggs never mentioned garlic steak, yet it was growing in oil and garlic. Order the eggs over easy, they were over angry? Hasbrowns soggy and salty, all other meals orders were bad at best. Service was average, building is nice and clean, just not a spot you would want to eat at
**BEWARE**Food was awful. The amount of food you get for the price you pay is outrageous. New owners are running the restaurant into the ground. They're much better places to eat. Don't waste your money here.
I had dinner at the Hoffman House today and was really disappointed from a gluten-free perspective. Despite being listed, they do not offer gluten-free pasta or gluten-free bread. I was told this after being seated, which left very few options. I ended up ordering a veggie burger with no bun, and unfortunately, it wasn’t good. This isn't a place that truly caters to people who need gluten-free meals, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone relying on Find Me Gluten Free to locate safe or satisfying options.
As a small business owner myself I really hate to leave a bad review. My sincere motive is that the owners of this beautiful historic property will re-evaluate their entire operation. The current owners took over the ownership in March of 2020 as COVID was killing businesses. They have a ton of excellent 5 star reviews but I believe they are coasting on what the previous owners built. Our experience; we called late for a reservation. When we got there, on time there was no record of our reservation. They seated us anyway. We sat at our table and waited for our server. She finally came and we received our drinks 30 minutes later. Next we ordered our dinner but did not receive until an hour later. Yes it was Saturday night, they were busy but as many reviewers have noted; extremely slow service. Now for the food. The bread was excellent. My salad was good, my wife thought her salad dressing (house dressing) had no flavor. My wife had the garlic shrimp Florentine. Shrimp OK but sauce had no flavor. I had the Steak au Poivre. This is supposed to be a pepper corn encrusted steak with sautéed shallot garlic and brandy cream sauce. No hint of garlic, shallot or brandy. The steak was tough. We paid and left very disappointed. Ok, as I mentioned, I rarely leave a bad review. My sincere hope is that the owners will read this and fix their problems.
