Baja Sonora is a popular Mexican restaurant known for its consistently great food, fast service, and reasonable prices. Customers rave about the happy hour deals, taco Tuesday specials, and the free chips and salsa bar. Some negative experiences mention rude staff or inconsistent food quality.
Tip: Take advantage of happy hour and taco Tuesday for great deals. Order inside the restaurant during happy hour to get the discounted taco price.
Was looking for a place with excellent hard taco. So we tried this place for the 1st time and we ordered every taco to try. Top three: Asada, shredded beef & carnitas. Bottom two: shrimp & fish. The bottom two were still tasty yummy but needed salsa of your choice to really be up there. Hubby liked the potato taco also. Endless chips & salsa bar was great. Also they have Orange Bang so that went well with the Mexican food. Next we want to try out the burritos. Prices were good considering we ordered a lot of food to give the place a fair shake.
The absolute must eat at Mexican restaurant in Long Beach California. They have the perfect sized proportions, my favorite is the Enchilada with one taco and a side of the best beans and rice. Wait times are a breeze the staff is not only super efficient, super friendly, but also super knowledgeable of the menu.
I never get photos because I inhale my food. No one comes close to the Potato tacos at this place. Crispy and loaded with lettuce shreds. The salsa bar is amazing. What I like best about this place is the consistency. When you crave a certain food, you want that taste, and Baja Sonora is the same deliciousness every time!
This past Tuesday, was the 1st time I've been back since they're reopening and the food was outstanding!! It was so good, that I even went back again last night. I always get the 2 taco's combination plate. The shells aren't real greasy, the meat is seasoned well and tender, the rice has a good flavor and the beans are nice and semi thick, not like some places where you go that you could almost suck the them through a straw!! It's the consistency of good food, that brings me back. I've been coming here for years, but I think they're food tastes even better, this second time around! Don't forget Taco Tuesday either, it's only $1.75 for hard shell taco's and it starts at 4:00. So, with that said, if you like quaint places with a friendly atmosphere, good prices and great food, then you'll enjoy Baja Sonora. Bon'appett 😊
I met a buddy here for lunch. Great authentic Mexican food. Chips are whole tortillas you break up yourself to the size you want. The Salsa bar is a good size. Terrific family owned business. Apparently the cooks are as close as family to the owners as they have been there 15 to 20 years with them.
I highly recommend Baja Sonora to anyone looking for a great casual Mexican restaurant. This restaurant is on my list of must visit whenever I am in town. I have been coming here for over 15 years and have never been disappointed with the quality of their food.
I ordered the fajita shrimp burrito dry and was amazed at how it held together. Normally, you’d expect the fajita ingredients to fall out, but this burrito stayed intact. Plus, the salsa bar was fantastic. I had all the hot sauce I wanted, which is rare. Usually, I struggle to finish my burrito because other places are stingy with hot sauce or it falls apart. Not here. It was perfect.
Baja Sonora is my favorite Mexican restaurant! Food is always fresh and delicious and you can't beat the chips and salsa bar. Each salsa is great on its own, or you can mix them to find your perfect combination. Fresh chips that are perfectly fried and crispy. I personally love orange bang for a drink, it compliments the food so well. Giant proportions and you always leave full. Can customize your burrito by getting it "wet" that adds cheese and sauce. The owners are delightful and truly care about their customers and this business. Reasonably priced, can dine in or get it to go. Highly recommend!
Really good Mexican food I love their salsa bar and self-serve chips options they have good Fountain drinks self-serve and good seating areas. Although the patio seating area is small outside it's nice to be able to sit out when the sun is going down to eat. I do recommend this place.
Best taco Tuesday around. Special prices on hard shell and soft tacos all day Tuesday and during happy hour every other night.
My group had a lot of good food, my carne asada fries were excellent.
My one and only mexican food spot when visiting back in town only downfall just wish you guy's were open a little longer like 9pm would be nice. But still numero uno. Thank you for being there over the years with great memories and terrific experiences. KM
Been coming here for years. always consistently good!
frequently voted a local favorite. great food, fast counter service. Taco Tuesday and daily happy hour taco deals.
Pick up order, on time! The salsa bar is amazing!
Our go to for Mexican food cravings! Best hard tacos in the LBC!
Generous portions, very yummy. I recommend the shrimp tacos. The place will sometimes get very busy during meal times, and you have to commit to either eating inside or outside. I would not recommend frivolously switching tables without the staff knowing, when it's busy. It's summertime, eating outside is quite nice at any rate.
Very simple Mexican establishment. We had a bad experience a few years back with the attitude of one the folks that worked there and decided to not go back. Long story short we did go back a couple of years later. Interacted with at least 2 folks that work there and the experience was great. We've tried their fish dish, fish tacos, and a few other dishes throughout time and will say their door is delicious. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place.
Fantastic Mexican food!!! Hot! Fast! Fresh!!!
I wish I could give 10 stars. Anything on the menu is excellent. I've been coming here for at least 20 years. It's crowded at lunch and dinner hours and rightly so. You couldn't do it better yourself even if you did go grocery shopping and cooking and cleaning! Call your order in early or kick it and have Mexican beer with lime &salt as you wait. Salsa bar is incredible. Free tostada shells. Pickled Jalapeños, lemon/lime wedges, four different kinds of homemade salsa......you can tell management takes pride in their salsa bar. It's a deal maker and the community appreciates the Baja Sonora family. Carnitas/Carne Asada/ Chile Relleno/ Guacamole/ pollo/beans/rice/crema-- hungry yet? I ain't getting paid to say this
Baja Sonora in Long Beach is a solid spot for Mexican food! The Baja burrito with carne asada is seriously good, and the chips and salsa bar is a nice touch. The vibe is laid-back and perfect for casual dining. Just be ready—parking can be tricky, but it’s worth the hassle!
Well, once again, the beef tacos here were terrific. My buddy's Dad and I showed up at 3 pm on a Sunday. It wasn't too busy, thankfully, so service was really fast. We ordered 6 tacos. Bob is 80, so he wanted 2 soft beef tacos. I ordered 4 hard shells, 1 for Bob. We had been sitting for 3 or 4 minutes and the tacos were brought out, nice and hot. Portions were very generous and Bob was super impressed on this first visit. I had been telling him about Baja Sonora for months, so I was really happy they made that impression on him. We also ate chips, still warm and freshly made, with 4 different types of salsa. He had a beer, too. Also, the bill was less than other taco places we've eaten at in the past. That was an extra reason to return. Bob was so impressed, we'll be there again, soon! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ RATING
Online ordering is fast and simple. Order ready on time and the staff are friendly as always. Baja Senora FTW!
Everything was great but you left off the cheese I added on the tacos.
We have been coming here over the past couple of years. The food is always tasty, very reasonably priced and offers a casual dining atmosphere. They offer a free chip bar and salsa along with a self-serve soda fountain. We simply wish that it was just a bit closer to our home. I wouldn't give much credit to the very few negative reviews which some have posted here as the owner and crew are always helpful and friendly and are doing their best to make everyone a satisfied customer. I highly recommend Baja Sonora and encourage you to give them a try yourself in the near future.
Love the serve yourself chips and salsa bar. Food is always good. Great happy hour prices. Also Taco Tuesday prices are great.
Have eaten here many times and will continue to do so. We love the food there.
I did take out - but I have been there when it is very busy and crowded. The food is great, and service with a smile!
I like their food. The shredded beef hard tacos and the spicy wet Chile Verde burrito are my go-to's. The only downside for me is I don't like the owner coming by to yap while trying to eat and enjoy my guests
Got a wet burro was delicious from the first bite to the last. Definitely recommend.
This place never disappoints! Always quick and easy! Food is always good!
I read an article about the best tacos in L.A. somewhere, and this place came up. So I told the wife we had to give it a shot since she hasn't found a good shredded beef crunchy taco. We ended up getting food for the whole family to go. Tacos, rice, beans, taquitos, tamales, nachos, and of course, we had to take some chips and salsa to go. The people working were amazing, repeated the order, and told me I got a tamale discount. Yay!! The food was quickly made, and we headed home. It was amazing!!!! Will definitely be coming back. Especially for that amazing salsa.
This is the second time I've come to the particular restaurant and I am not disappointed once again! The food and staff are awesome the atmosphere is great and the music is not too loud! The chip bar is really great as well. Not only is the food some of the best tasting in the area, but also priced very well and the portions are of course huge as one would expect from a place like this. It's like getting two meals for one pass. I have dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow LOL brought my wife here for the first time and she is enjoying her total tostada with asada! I of course love my asada quesadilla. The mild salsa for the chips is amazing. Definitely a plus. Will definitely be returning again and probably sooner than later! LOL thank you everybody at Baja Sonora! We appreciate you.
We didn't get to dine in tonight. But we took it to go, and it was still fantastic.
Super good! First time here in years. Our family used to eat here for special occasions. It’s such a perfect spot for that. Each person can order and pay for their food and then be seated. The self serve chips and salsa is so appealing. Drinks are delicious. Staff is friendly and efficiently making sure everything is great!
LOVED! LOVED! the food ,you receive a huge amount of food! The staff are nice, kind and attentive. It was very cozy and I love COZY
Salsa bar it's amazing Very tasty
Great food, I had the asada burrito and taquitos . They have a salsa bar with home made chips to go.
A place where you can go an not be disappointed , hard working staff amazing cooks that put out some of the most delicious authentic Mexican Food I ever had ! You can feel the pride they take in providing a service from beginning to the end . We always leave the place with a full stomach an anxious to return an try something else ! Bless you folks there an Thank You for all your hard work , the place is a Testiment of Great Customer Service !!!
Our go-to place for Mexican. Love the chile rellenos.
This establishment is a delightful place to dine. A staff member named Sonia, who has dedicated 25 years of service, is exceptionally amiable. If you have a fondness for chili verde, this is certainly the place to be, and their Mexican Caesar salad is truly outstanding. Furthermore, they offer an unlimited supply of tostada shell-style chips. On one occasion, I observed a gentleman in a wheelchair who was not receiving assistance from any of the employees. Upon witnessing his struggle, the owner, Mary, promptly offered her assistance, which I found to be a commendable act, especially considering the lack of initiative from her staff. After the gentleman had departed, I expressed my appreciation to Mary for her proactive approach in assisting a customer, particularly in light of her employees' inaction.
The Carne Asada was exceptional; the chile relleno was not my personal preference but it was well done for its style (very soft and egg-y; I prefer them a little crispier) the tortilla chips are prepared whole and you break them yourselves. The medium red salsa and the salsa verde were tasty. Would definitely come back. Service friendly and fast.
I am a salsa fanatic. This place has a salsa bar that you can help yourself to. The salsas run the gamut from mild to scorching (appropriately labeled 9-1-1). With most plates running under $10, this is one of the best value I've ever encountered. The entrees are hearty and plentiful and delicious. I didn't have their new vegetarian item even though I took a pic of the sign.
Great meal as always! I tried your carne nada taco and it was delicious!
We live going to Baja Sonora. The food is always fresh and very tasty. Service is excellent.
One of my favorite family spots I enjoy when craving that style of Mexican food. I say style because I know that there are particular regions that proudly state their origin, and what they are most proud to present. Growing up near downtown L.A. got me exposed to the taquerias, long before food trucks. Very early on, when we moved to a less diversified neighborhood, I knew Taco Bell / Dell Taco just wasn't right. Coming from a world of soft corn tortillas to fried was like eating Doritos and lettuce. As an adult I spent a good amount of time in Texas, and have really become snobbish about real TexMex. Any decent Mexican restaurant in Texas has handmade flour tortillas being pressed out all day. Flamed beef, chicken, shrimp fajitas on a sizzling platter is unmatched. Colorado and especially New Mexico have their native chile's that create sauces that force you to go wet. A whole nother experience. So, let's wrap this up. If I'm wanting something I can pick up and enjoy in hand and savor the flavor and texture of the meat, I'm not going to Baja Sonora, I'm hitting one of my "go to" street taco spots that serve that aguacate and if you're in the know, you say "yeah"to the grilled cebolla and jalapenos, fill a bag of sliced cucumbers in sticky lime juices, picked carrots, onions, jalapenos to complement my barbacoa, and pastor. But if I want to scoop with a fork and some great green or 911 salsa and deep fried crispy potato, shredded beef, ground beef, or a big steamy wet burrito, and their brownie which is my pro tip, I love Baja Sonora. Price, and consistency will keep bringing me back. Oh yeah, and two spacious clean restrooms that you can lock the door in case you go overboard...lol.
Our favorite hole in the wall Mexican food. Very high quality food for reasonable prices. Salsa bar is fantastic.
Crunchy tacos are always great. Chips and salsa bar are spectacular while waiting
Great food!i added notes on my online order and everything was perfect.
Always a great place to eat. It's one of the few places I'll stand in line to order. Delicious food... I tried the ceviche on my last visit. A nice sized portion and perfectly seasoned!
I’ve been coming here since I moved to Long Beach 10 years ago. The food is consistently yummy, the service extraordinary, and the prices have remained reasonable. The online ordering app is a blessing.
Had it delivered. On time, delivery person followed instructions. Food great, however, I apparently ordered one dish twice. So Dad has leftovers today.
Great food. Ordered on line. Picked up on time. Enjoyed lunch with a friend. Could not have been better!
Great food, and love the deals for Happy Hour on. Tuesdays. We really enjoy the food and convenience for dining in or picking up.
You order at counter, get number, and select table yourself. There is a chip and salsa bar to get your own. Menu was HUGE! Food excellent! I recommend.
This place is five star. They are The Fastest in the West at cooking your food, and the food is good! Excellent! I love their chili relleno burrito & on the lighter side the chicken bowl provides you with lots of healthy vegetables & protein, but you won’t feel cheated because it also has rice and black beans. Mom & I love their bean & cheese burritos. The staff is always courteous and attentive. This is also one of the last places that has reasonable prices and healthy proportions. Everybody is now charging for chips too, not Baja Sonora. We go all the time & they are consistent. In short, we love this place!
Great Mexican food! Not every place can claim this! I have tried 3 of the 4(?) locations throughout the years (20+) & the food is consistently fabulous! I moved away from the area about a year ago and was not able to partake! I was so disappointed until I recently found out they can deliver to my new location! I'm so happy to be a repeat customer! Many Thanks to Mike, Mary & the loyal staff!!
In town for work on a Tuesday, and walked over from the hotel to find this amazing atmosphere and food!! I enjoyed the all-day "happy hour" pricing for tacos, helped myself to the freshly made chips & delicious salsas, and washed everything down with a tamarindo agua fresca! All walks of life represented in the packed house that night, and the best experience I've had on the road in years!!! Well done, Baja Sonora!
The environment was classic and the food delicious. I was in the area on business and had no direction on food places. The parking is limited, but the clientele was varied. Ordering was fast and friendly. I had the Baja Burrito and a beer. Sitting on the small patio and enjoying the weather was so worth the stop. 4 stars only because the burrito was not as warm as I wanted. With that being my only complaint, there is no option for 4.5. Worth the stop if you're in the long beach area.
Decent food. Prices a little steep. I'm unlikely to return because the crew was really irritated; I did not feel welcome there. Parking is very tight. The restaurant is very tight with an oddly low ceiling.
Food is delicious. Their crunchy tacos are so good. They are just a bit small and pricey. I wouldn't get them often because of that. However, food is great. Their salsas are really good. They have a free salsa and free chips at salsa bar. Pretty crowded so allow time or call ahead.
Tasty Mexican food. Plus free fried tortillas with salsa!
Quality of the food Average/Slightly Above Average. Customer service have been consistent pleasant with taking phone orders. Occasionally during peak time, can be on hold up to 5-10 minutes when placing phone orders. Fortunately, they have a separate line to approach when picking up phone orders rather than waiting in the line. Would be nice to have a sign or have any type of indication that there is no need to wait in the same line. Atmosphere is family family with the nice, brighter interior since the remodel. Enjoy the chip & salsa bar.
Food cold by time got Home… maybe think about insulated containers…
Great tasting food the all meat burrito was smaller than expected
We came to Baja Sonora with the family looking for something casual, quick, and satisfying, and this place hit exactly what we were craving. It’s bright, laid-back, and easygoing—perfect for a family meal where everyone can find something they like without overthinking it. Ordering was fast, food came out really quick, and the staff kept things moving smoothly. I ordered the Baja Burrito with carne asada, and it was big, filling, and packed with flavor. The steak was well-seasoned and tender, and the rice and beans inside made it a full-on comfort meal. I also grabbed a couple of carne asada tacos on the side, which were simple but solid—great meat, warm tortillas, and nothing overdone. One of the best parts of eating here is the salsa bar. We went back more than once, trying different salsas with the chips, which were fresh and crunchy. Other plates around the table included crunchy tacos and a chicken bowl, and everyone cleaned their plates. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and it feels like one of those dependable neighborhood spots you can always count on. Baja Sonora is definitely going into our regular rotation for an easy, family-friendly Mexican food stop.
Food was good. We ordered burritos, flautas, and tacos online and got some free chips and salsa when we picked up food. Note: Tacos are discounted during Happy Hour when ordering inside the restaurant. We were charged the full price when ordering using the app during the Happy Hour time frame.
The food was decent. I really liked the open chip bar. I got the two soft taco combo (mahi mahi and shrimp). I believe my sister got the carne asada bowl and my other family member got the hard chicken taco. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place but it's a decent relatively cheap place to eat at.
Very clean and fast service, long line during lunch hour Self serve on chips, salsa bar variations on fountain drinks orange bang, pop, and mexican waters like horchata readily available. Staff are friendly and helpful in answering your questions. The menu is on the wall to your right as soon as you enter, cashier is on your right as well a few steps away from the menu. Please make sure you remember your order once you are there or you will hold up the line going back to see the menu. Don't forget to ask for your straw. P.S. restrooms are wide enough for a wheelchair very clean.
The chips and salsa were great. The chicken chimichanga was overly filled with beans and the chicken was dry. My friend had a regular hard shell beef taco with her plate and she wasn't expecting shredded beef, she stated it made the taco dry as well.
Food was mediocre. I used to come here often for Happy Hour tacos and they were always pretty good. Decided to venture off the menu and get a shredded beef burrito and it was not great. I do appreciate that the chips and salsa are self serve so that my appetite is not neglected in that department, however I was charged for extra enchilada sauce - that was a little surprising. I will likely try tacos again but I am now very hesitant to try anything else. There is a small patio that is also very convenient, especially for these hot summer nights.
I was disappointed in the food it seemed very generic and served luke warm. Service was ok for fast food mexican place. Kind of pricey for what we got. 2 for lunch $ 44.00 plus tip . Nice salsa bar. Clean enough.
Very disappointing. As a Mexican, the food was bland. I dont know why people think it's good. When we got our plates, they were so hot. They leave the plates above the grill, so the plates are extremely hot. The beans are bland, and the rice isn't anything special. The salsa wasn't even spicy. It was my first time in a while and the last.
As a first time customer, I was convinced by the prior reviews stating this place would be a great choice. Boy was I wrong! My food was ready within 20 mins of ordering although, it was cold to the touch and not freshly made. My rice and beans lacked flavor and furthermore the restaurant’s staff made me feel unwelcome. Due to being a bit hungry I relented and finished my meal. Hopefully this place gets it right in the future. This is California the home of quality food. This establishment lacks quality and standards.
The tacos were not that good. There was hardly any meat or the meat was over cooked in the tacos shell. Won’t be going back.
Yesterday I ordered a shrimp taco and she brought me a hard taco with beef. She offered to take back but I excepted as I like shredded beef. It had about a tablespoon of beef in it. I did not say anything but it was very disappointing 😕
Would have rather gone to taco bell...Worst Mexican food I have had. Ordered the shrimp Baja burrito and a side of guacamole. The food came out 1 min after ordering and was still luke warm (how does one accomplish that?) which is a huge red flag (that means nothing was freshly cooked or at least heated properly) Shrimp smelled like they had been left out after cooking for hours. Guacamole was flavorless (no lime, no salt and no pepper) Highly recommend to try your local taco truck or side street taco stand. Heck go to taco bell because you will eat much better food there. It's unfortunate it's a small family owned business but you have to do better than doing below the bare minimum, no excuses, especially with the prices you are charging, regardless of current climate, at least make decent food 🤷🏾♀️
I chose this place as a catering option for lunch and ordered the Street Taco Bar option on 1/17/2026. The total price was around $1300 for 90 people. The point of contact person was Mike and he was rude, unprofessional, and aggressive. When I told him that we had no napkins, plates, and service utensils and believed Baja Sonora would provide them, he acted as if he was personally insulted, even though I made no comments towards the restaurant or towards him. Later, when I received a call from the individual that were getting the items, he grabbed my shoulder where I gestured him to wait. Instead he shook the receipt copy at my face and at another student near by. As for the food, I expected an equal amount of chicken and beef with the rice and beans. Instead, we received one tray of chicken and beef each while the rice, beans, tortillas, and tostadas had two trays each. The rice was not seasoned and the sauces were not spicy, despite Mike saying they were. In conclusion, I DO NOT recommend this place to anyone; especially for the high price tag.
I had a very disappointing experience with an inexperienced cashier. I asked for a simple customization, but instead of handling it smoothly, she had to ask the cook—who was dismissive and rude. This was especially surprising since it wasn’t even busy. I originally came in to try the food and planned to place a large catering order, but after this interaction I’ll be taking my business to another location. The owner really needs to invest in better staff training. Save your money and choose another restaurant. Attached is a photo showing a not very busy time.
Nachos were disgusting first they came some chips soggy and others burned to a crisp cheese looked like it was microwaved the plate was 1000 degrees but i fliped the food over to mix it and the meat and inside was cold. Like how? I asked them to warm it up and it came back looking like mush idk about the rest of the food but Nachos are a no go
