Opinions de Royal Hawaiian Laguna Beach
Very unclear what all the bad reviews are about on this place. We came in on a week day afternoon around maybe 2 or so and it was basically empty. The staff greeted us and were friendly and took our orders. We ordered several drinks and were blown away by the presentation of all of them. This bar was curated by someone with a clear passion for tiki drinks and tiki kitsch. So much attention to detail, but not in a cheap rendering of plastic beachside cosplay. From the tile wall in the entryway to the lighting and decor on the walls, it is clear someone has put a lot of heart and soul into creating a tiki experience to be enjoyed. I firmly believe that photos do not do tiki justice (partly because the quality drops drastically after you've had one or two) but also partly because the environment enhances the experience. Regardless, the Bali Bali and the Triple Happiness have the most going on, theatrics-wise. The Triple Happiness seemed only to impress me with its strong mezcal flavor and was soundly rejected by the rest of the table, but if you're mezcal fan - this is for you. The Dragon's Milk and the Purple Haze were also enjoyed by the table. Again, the pictures provided do not do it justice, stop in and try it for yourself!
I only drank here, but they have legit tiki here. The Zombie is classic, boozy, and perfect for the location. I can’t believe they don’t have a Navy Grog on the menu but they made a great one. But the remodel was just perfect. They did a great job with the seashell in the entry and plenty of nautical tidbits. The bar are is really where it’s at. And if you’re single, probably the perfect date spot in Laguna.
We had a great dinner here. The food was done very well although the main draw is the atmosphere and the cocktails. All of the cocktails were great, and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. I’d recommend this place although when we came they had the music turned up a bit too loud so it was really hard to hear other people at the table. Parking of course sucked but just be prepared for that.
The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill is a phenomenal 1940s Tiki Bar & restaurant that has been exactingly restored to its original glory! Everything in the bar and restaurant belongs in a Tiki museum. The exquisitely crafted cocktails hearken to an earlier time when the Tiki was king ~ especially the Zombie, Chief Lapu Lapu, Mai Tai and Bali Bali! The cocktails, staff, and food, especially the baby back ribs, are divine. Not to be missed!
Stopped in for appetizers and a couple cocktails on a Sunday at 5 p.m., had no problem finding a table in the bar. Our server Coral was delightful, friendly, funny, and honest (about what, I will not tell. Lol) we had a Royal Hawaiian and Chief Lapu Lapu cocktail for drinks, and both were quite good. The Lapu Lapu has roots here and it was fun to taste it in its place of origin! Lots of great rums and thought out into the cocktail menu. Now for the food! We had crab Rangoon, spam musubi, and french fries. Rangoon was good, but not the show stopper.... That was the spam and french fries. How good can french fries be you ask? These may be the best fries I have ever had.... And fill disclosure I am a chubby french fry fan! Spam musubi was also amongst the best I have ever had!
Pre-grand opening weekend visit! The tiki vibes are strong and decor is beautiful. The acid adjusted pineapple Mai Tai was delicious and the Three Dots and a Dash was refreshing and not too sweet. I tried the Banana Smuggler, but really couldn’t taste any Banana in it at all. The Crab Rangoon at $25 for an appetizer seemed pretty steep for the size, but the flavors were on point. We also enjoyed the steak and lobster and pineapple fried rice. I felt like the lobster could have used some more seasoning or drawn butter for dipping. I’m so happy they’ve reopened this place and taken the time and care to do it right! Looking forward to our next visit!
The Royal Hawaiian restaurant and pub is one of the best experiences that anyone can have in Laguna Beach, CA. The staff is amazing, the food is exceptional, lots of options when it comes to drinks especially their extended "happy hour" times. I had the "Poke won-ton nachos" which if you've never tried, it is highly recommended, paired with Long Board beer.
I'm into tiki drinks and came across The Royal Hawaiian on line but lived to far away to visit. We were on a trip to visit family and we were nearby. We came in for dinner and drinks and it was great! The drinks were great and I had 1/2 a rack of babyback ribs and they were really good, so tender they fell off the bones. I can't wait to come back someday, I did buy a couple of the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai glasses to put my tropical drinks into and remind me of the good times there.
Everything a restaurant should be. The food: Excellent. The Mauna Loa seared ahi was SO GOOD! Perfectly tender with a blend of spices paired so well. It actually had me thinking "Man, that's good!" The SPAM sushi was exactly what I was wanting in an appetizer, tasty but not overwhelming. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the side salad was great! The crispy lettuce meshed perfectly with the sliced carrots. All of the cocktails were above-and-beyond. Sweet, but not too sweet, and with so many to choose from, I will definitely be returning! Dessert was great! The cake was of a different taste to what I was used to, but this turned out to be better than what I was expecting. The service: Excellent. Our waiter was polite, didn't miss a beat, the right amount of chatty, and attentive. The bartender seemed like a really chill dude, bro. While we were there, there were people celebrating a birthday and they hung up a banner. This is really cool on the part of the restaurant. The atmosphere: Excellent. From the menu to the lobby, The Royal Hawaiian does not miss! The cocktail menu is a joy to look at, with tikis and little illustrations of the drinks, the effort does not go unnoticed! The lighting in the whole restaurant is perfect, going along with the walls. Even the barriers between booths are cool, with ceramic and rope tied together you'd think it was commissioned by an artist. The restrooms are clean and stocked. The interior threshold has a cool fishtank and and giant seashell, which totally matches the vibe. Speaking of vibes, they are good!
If I can recall, this is the 4th or so iteration of this classic spot. So you may see very different reviews from across the years pop up. But as of June 10th 2023, it’s under new ownership and has gone through another remodel, a throwback to the original Francis Cabang historic location. All that aside, what a comeback! There are very few places you walk in and feel completely immersed and transported that are not some kind of theme park ride or resort location. Notch of Top Notch Customs was brought in to overhaul the space and you automatically get that authentic lived in island feel. It’s absolutely gorgeous. From the bar, booths, dining tables and outdoor spaces, every wall, corner and ceiling area is covered with tropical ephemera. But what about the food and drinks?! None of this matters if that’s no good right? Well I went with a huge thirst and big appetite and while I couldn’t order a ton, what I did was absolutely delicious. They have a classic cocktail menu featuring tiki staples from the best along with modern cocktails to balance in the new. I tried a few on each side and I was impressed with how balanced (though still boozy) they were. Be sure to order a lot of water and eat something while you’re at it! Food wise I had to eat the classic Loco Moco and Spam Musubi. These are traditional dishes that continue to last the test of time and they were both very good. A bit pricier than most for the Loco Moco but a really good portion of food. Typically this dish is a fried egg over gravied hamburger (though many places will use spam as well both good) meat over a bed of rice. But this dish comes with a few sides and not with rice off the bat. So if you’re wanting that classic setup make sure to ask for the rice. Though I think that’s something they should tell you upfront. Otherwise your options are Mac salad, fries, salmon poke, and one more thing. I love this dish because it’s the perfect entree to soak in all the alcohol you’ll be imbibing! There’s a bunch of other delicious staples on the menu that I hope to try on repeat visits. But for now I highly recommend you check it out if it interests you. Seating for tables are by reservation only but bar walk-ins are welcome anytime. One last highlight; the staff. They’re a great bunch of people who are very accommodating and welcoming and just so fun to talk to. I personally love dining at the bar to get to know them and everyone I talked to was a pleasure to get to know.
We chose this place because we are huge Hawai'i fans. Wow did the food ever blow us away! Location and atmosphere were also great - they offer two hour complementary valet parking at the lot next door. We both enjoyed our drinks - a hurricane and a Mai tai. The food was outstanding. The spam masubi and chicken dumplings were both very good, with the musubi outshining the dumplings. The mains were out of this world - we had the galbi ribs and huli huli chicken with Mac salad and coleslaw, and salad and fries for sides. This food would fit right in on the island - very authentic and executed to perfection. If we were local we would be back for sure. For now it will stay on the revisit list for a return trip. Mahalo nui!
The ambiance of this restaurant is excellent and the main seller for the Royal Hawaiian. The food and drinks are also very good but some of it is a little pricey. I recommend the Banana Smuggler drink and the Pineapple curry rice, loco Moco, Hawaiian Mac salad, and the burger. The Pineapple Upside-down cake was a nice end to the meal. Also try to make reservations or you'll probably have to sit outside. Also the parking situation is not great, it's mostly street parking. You can buy one of their special glasses to take home, but I was disappointed that they were sold out. Overall this is one of my favorite restaurants/bars in Laguna Beach and a must visit!
I had my wedding here and it was absolutely unreal!! The food, atmosphere, staff, drinks, event management company, everything was top notch and above and beyond. Our guests had the time of their lives, we truly couldn’t be happier with our experience!! Everyone should have an event here, it was incredible.
The reviews were mixed but the atmosphere is a 10 on 10. The food was good. We ordered the spam fries which were good and garlic shrimp noodles. They needed some salt which we requested at the table. A cool place of Laguna Beach history since it opened in 1947
Huli chicken and vegetables great, Ribs also very good. Atmosphere is awesome, great Polynesian cocktails and Ema, Omar and Calvin took very good care of us.
Top place in laguna. Food, service and ambience are incredible. It had been amazed by each dish. After visit this place I’ll be frustrated because we don’t have this place in Spain.
Visited for lunch and loved it. Wonderful cocktails and food, classy tropical ambience, great service. Wish I lived closer!
Very few places get a triple 5 star rating, and this is one of them. The food is fantastic, the service staff is great from the bartenders, wait staff, management, and the cook! The atmosphere is quintessential classic tiki bar and it delivers on all other points too. Definitely worth a visit, and you're likely to get hooked!
Been a while since I’ve been here, maybe 20 years. Went in Saturday of Labor Day weekend, just want to say starting with the hostess (didn’t get her name) to Jen the manager to Jamie our server, it was an outstanding service. The cocktails were as amazing as we remembered and the food, I’ve gotta say was off the charts. The appetizers to the main entrees were spot on. Ribs were perfect, not fall off the bone like they are supposed to be, perfectly cooked, mahi-mahi was perfect. Coconut shrimp tasty AF. For the pompous people that came in on a holiday weekend and gave the hostess and manager crap for having to wait, go back to Newport or riverside and enjoy a meal there. We will be back and bring more people and have a blast. Thank you for your hospitality.
Such a fun and yummy night! Saw this place on oc_foodie’s instagram so we wanted to give it a try. We loved the pupu platter, which was the sampler of several of the delicious appetizers. So worth it! This alone with some drinks at the bar would make an amazing happy hour. We were here for dinner so we got the ahi with Mac salad and veggies, and the shrimp skewers with rice and fries. Both of the dishes were fresh and delicious. I would definitely add the gravy to the fries next time. The shrimp skewers were so garlicky which we loved. We ended the meal with the lava cake, which had yummy macadamia nuts. Live music on weekends is such a nice touch and service was attentive and prompt. Can’t wait to come back and try them for happy hour too!
Went two nights ago for happy hour before watching the sunset at Heisler Park, 2 minutes away. I got the Happy Hour Mai Tai $10 and vegetable spring rolls $10. Both were delicious! Very friendly staff and bartenders make great cocktails. Decor is fun, restaurant is clean and love the vibe. It's a staple in Laguna, definitely recommend it! The only somewhat complaint...put music on that visitors guests want to hear at a tiki bar ie Polynesian, Surfer, 1960s etc NOT Led Zeppelin (which happens to be one of my favorite bands). Think lots of times staff puts on their picks vs what guests want.
We just had drinks so my food stars are really just a comment on the excellent quality of the drinks. I had the Smoke and Roses and the Dragon’s Milk. Both were some of the best tiki cocktails I’ve had. RH relies more on flavor and presentation than ABV and sugar. Great complex flavors that tell a story. Amazing decor and music. And our server was top-notch. Can’t wait to come back.
Beautiful highly-themed establishment with beautifully crafted cocktails and a broad range of delicious food offerings--both for full meals or small bites. My salmon was flavorful and perfectly cooked with a lovely crisp on the outside, but still flaky and moist on the inside.
1st time here. Really nice atmosphere- tiki bar. Food was fantastic. Bartenders were also the servers. They knew it was my birthday so they sang happy birthday and was going to give me a free desert but I was to full. I got there at happy hour. ordered the Spring veg rolls- they were delicious took some home along with the main entree which was Pineapple Curry Rice. It had a type of pork/shrimp, peas, and scallions cut into a pineapple. Very tasty. Would go back when Im back in Laguna Beach, CA.
Excellent happy hour deals. $10 for some great Tiki drinks. No skimping on quality or fun presentation. The customer service has been excellent, especially in the last few months. The mixologists are definitely tiki aficionados! Food was great as well.
While there are only two vegan items listed on the menu, the chef Nora went out of her way to make us fried rice without meat or egg. she even brought us a side of perfectly marinated tofu with it. Our waiter Jairo was amazing and told us the story of how they came up with the “flamin’ willy” shot… i wish we lived closer so we could come more often.

Incredibly lovely space. Jenna and Victoria (sincere apologies if I misremembered their names) were so friendly and made our night. The space has been beautifully remodeled and the drinks were excellent. The poke bowl was delicious. Thank you for making my night.

Hostess very pleasant greeting our server Iliana was very helpful when ordering and everything arrived in a timely fashion very pleased. Atmosphere you'd think you were on the island. The food is so good , Rib eye made to perfection, worth every obsolete penny. Definitely order the Navy Grog to complete your visit.

Our group of 4 were delighted with the atmosphere and the service! Our waitperson was enthusiastic, engaged and fun. The food was very good and I especially liked the Lumpia. As for the drinks .... Awesome! The Royal Hawaiian lives up to the Tiki Bar tradition of well mixed, tasty cocktails made with traditional ingredients. The decor is creative and very well made, solid and totally "Tiki". I would highly recommend The Royal Hawaiian to any Tiki Bar enthusiast.
My partner and I took a little road trip up to Laguna Beach for the day and we came across this place. The overall ambiance of this place was a bit fun, playful, and casual. I did not realize this would be a tiki bar, but perhaps that is on me haha! The food and drinks were tasty, and our server was great. I got the ahi poke nachos and my partner got the fish n chips. We both enjoyed our meals and would happily come back here again when in town.
The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill is a Tiki bar and restaurant with great food, cocktails and mocktails. We started by ordering a Mai Tai, Dragon's Milk, and a few virgin Piña Coladas. All drinks were fantastic and the cocktails were stiff. No punches were pulled. For the appetizer, we ordered the Lumpia pork egg roll appetizer. These lumpia were longer than normal, but still crispy and not overly greasy. It was served with a side of sweet and sour sauce, but the lumpia was good on its own. For our main courses, I ordered the Royal burger, but asked for no teriyaki or pineapple. It was two beef patties with cheese and all the standard fixings. Fantastic burger! I was told the same could be said for the fried chicken sandwich. Both came with a side of crispy hot fries. The curry pineapple rice was more like fried rice with a few shrimp, but tasty nevertheless. The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly and attentive. Parking was a pain, but that's generally the case around this area.
I had made a reservation way in advance and then what followed didn’t feel right and actually never experienced this from a business. The situation was resolved and I was happy to finally get to be in the Royal Hawaiian . A place I used to walk by when I grew up in Laguna Beach as a kid. Parking was easy , hostess very nice . We took photos in the shell , looked around it was fun. And then there was no music at all. The table we sat at was dark as in no ambiance . I asked if it was possible to turn the lamps on , which they did. The food I thought was good. I had no bloating or tummy issues . I did think that the Pu Pu platter was too salty but everyone else seemed to enjoy it . 6 of us then sat at the bar . Jose the greatest bartender made Tiki drinks for us that were perfect !
Mixed feelings! I loved this place, the decor is on point, quite adorable! The service was good, no complaints. The food however was hit and miss. Our appetizers were delicious veggie egg rolls and coconut shrimp. The coconut cake was nice dense and delicious. One of the mocktails was decent, the Pina colada however I prefer blended, they just poured pineapple juice and some coconut juice into some ice and didn't even stir. The main dishes were also not great. The chicken was just not very good we had a taste and it did not have a good flavor. The macaroni salad had way too much mustard for my personal taste. This is a great place to maybe hang out at the bar grab some appetizers but not really full on dinner. Overall experience was enjoyable but main entrees just didn't hit the spot.
Overall a good experience. Food and drinks were delicious. Prices are on the high side. Beware...you have to be SEATED in the bar area to get Happy Hour prices - no kids! However, we were not aware of that and we came for dinner with kids. They were willing to accommodate us. Even with happy hour prices we still paid about $60 a head with tip. It's a pretty cool Polynesian themed Tiki Bar, but I think the prices they charge are a bit high for this place - especially for dishes with a few pieces of shrimp or a filet of mahi-mahi or chicken. I'd say it's good for happy hour specials, but overpriced for anything beyond that.
Location:Good, Parking: Okay, Service: Good, Price for food received:Okay, Overall: For a first time try I was impressed with the interior look of the location, Parking was a charge of $20 next to restaurant which did not appeal to me. I did find metered Parking within walking for $5 you get 2 hours. The service was great as servers checked on our table every chance . The meals were decent but rather small for the price. I do enjoy a good steak but I may be awhile before I drive out to eat at this restaurant...
Am giving 3 stars for the following; Drinks and food are way overpriced. When at a tiki bar, I enjoy listening to island sounds. There was no music whatsoever, until we were leaving, then they decided to turn it on. The music sets the vibe and we didn't get that experience. What we got was a table with 2 screaming kids...ummm..it's a "bar". Felt like we were at Chuck E Cheese instead. Food was mediocre at best. When we paid, we told the waitress we need a copy of the receipt to show the valet guy, then she said she didn't know how to print a copy! She found another customers receipt and gave that to us. I don't think we'll be coming back.
I really wanted to love this place. The menu looked great and the vibe was super fun and kitschy—I was totally feeling it when we walked in. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the expectations. The service wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t friendly either, and it was oddly slow given how empty the restaurant was. I ordered the ribeye steak with macaroni salad and a green salad. The steak was a big letdown—tough, not great quality, and the teriyaki sauce didn’t help. The macaroni salad also lacked flavor. My wife and kids weren’t thrilled with their meals either. We tried to salvage the night with dessert and ordered the coconut cake, but even that fell flat—it tasted old, and between the four of us, we didn’t finish it. The atmosphere had potential, but the food and overall experience just didn’t deliver. Disappointing.
we got the spam masubi, chicken dumplings, and hulu hulu chicken with macaroni salad and garlic rice. the spam masubi was the best food item we had, but it wasn’t anything special. the dumplings were fine also but not something i’d order again, the chicken was dry and lacked flavor, the sides were unremarkable. the best part of our meal was the pina colada, that’s why it got a 3 and not a 2. probably won’t come back but i will say our service was amazing!!
Would be 5/5 stars if the drinks were not $19. Would have been 4/5 without the weirdly predatory photo experince. After tax and tip included its ~22 a drink. I would not recommend visiting off happy hour - when the prices are more reasonable. Only the Mai Thai is on the happy hour for drinks tho. The happy hour food was good, but with 3 drinks total, 2 appetizers, and 1 meal off happy hour we still spent over $110. Further, they asked us to take a picture at the front which was cute then brought it in frames to our table and pushed it really hard on us. $20 for a per photo in a cheap frame… then they asked for a tip on the checkout of the photo starting at 20%! It felt gross and ruined the whole vibe of the place. Great esthetic and the drinks tasted great, but the price and photo experience were a big turn off. If you are a tiki bar person like me, worth a single visit but be warned on cost

Vibe is very fun. Drinks were really good. Service was ok. Pupu platter was fine - I mean it's all fried stuff but decent. Entrees were not good. Kalbi ribs tough, Ahi was weirdly tough also (both people who had it did not like) and my Moco Loco had the most intense gravy but not in a good way - super salty and thick. Maybe go for drinks and a snack rather than dinner.
3 stars for cute decor but that's where the fun ends. We were seated for our early reservation of 5:30 and our server came to inform us we are only allowed to stay for a certain length of time before being asked to leave. Umm ok Ma'am we'll try our best to get out of your way quickly. Sheesh. Then she took our drink orders. $19 per drink but that doesn't include the fancy glass as shown in the menu. Those cost extra. Ugh ok, we'll switch those out for "plain" glasses instead. Then I ordered plain ol' fish and chips for $27.95. Proud to say we finished our dinner quickly like we were told. However I was still thirsty and hungry so we went somewhere else to close out the night. Outrageous prices, no ocean view, and service that felt like we were in a school cafeteria waiting for the bell to ring. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. Go down the street and have dinner at the Board and Brew then cross PCH after and take a walk on path and enjoy the sunset from there. Your wallet will thank you.

My fiancé and I got to the restaurant around 3:15 pm yesterday and they are only serving brunch appetizers until 4:00pm which was okay for us. I grew up in Honolulu Hawaii, born in Philippines, lived in South Korea for 6 years. I’m a Pacific Islander. My entire professional career is in food and beverage and hospitality. This restaurant doesn’t even deserve one star at all! Disrespected all these food I have been eating since I was a kid in all levels. The appetizers are subpar from its quality, flavor profile, visual presentation, and EVERYTHING. They’re not fresh, authentic and not made from scratch. They look pre-packaged that was bought at Restaurant Depot or US Foods. The price point??? Outrageous for these food!!!!! The Mai Tai extremely did not taste like Mai Tai! Another disrespect to Tiki culture. We spent $100+ for these? I feel like we were robbed and humiliated with all of these food served to us yesterday. Mai Tai $18??? Crab Rangoon “$25”!!!!! Popcorn Chicken $16, and coconut shrimp $18 all came out to $82 check plus tips. I pay expensive food a lot of times and wouldn’t mind paying top dollars on a menu but please not these. I would rather go eat at Billy’s in Newport or even at Dukes in HB. The only great thing I will say about this restaurant is our server and it’s interior layout and design. Our server was attentive and had a great customer service, we ate the food out of respect for her as she was working hard! Other than that this restaurant is not worth of coming back as I am too afraid to try the lunch and/or dinner menu.
Food was bland, drinks were okay, and service was incredibly slow and rigid. Nice ambience, and had live music but couldn't overcome horrible experience. My family and I won't go again and wouldnt recommend to anyone else
