Opinions de Kreuz Market Lockhart
This was our 1st time at Kreuz, the smoked meats were amazing, especially the turkey (it was very tasty) the sides were very good as well. Will stop again when we're back in town!!
My wife and I stopped in here for some classic Texas BBQ. This is a large institution in Lockhart TX serving up the smoke for a century now. They smoke their meats on premises, in the old school way. We enjoyed some pork ribs, and some spicy sausage, along with coleslaw and beans. You order your meat in the Smokehouse area, then if you want sides or beverages you order them out in the remainder of the restaurant. Seating is at picnic tables indoor or out. Everything is served on butcher paper and paper towels, etc... again, old school stuff! You will not be disappointed with their meats and the atmosphere. I really enjoyed the spicy beans we had but the coleslaw was only average. Be careful about your meat order, however, as it tends to be pricey.
Kreuz Market has some of, if not the very best BBQ I’ve ever had. Brisket and potato casserole were absolute perfection, ribs, turkey and corn were very good too. The Sauerkraut had something special about it I couldn’t quite place but it was excellent as well. Overall I’d have to rate it a 10 of 10. Would absolutely come again if I’m in the area.
Could be the most unassuming BBQ joint in Texas, besides the largest stacks of mesquite wood pile ever seen on the side. Sausage could be one of the best in the country, the casing, meat and smoke are quite the combination. Best snap on casing and crunch, the smoke ring is serious on these beauty's. Brisket was good. The beans were amazing! Huge place on the inside and very amazing pit area, worth a travel here.
Family Favorite! We pass through often on the way to our family ranch in Luling. Each time, we are greeted with the most awesome service! The best bbq in the world is right here! The merch is stylish and affordable! Last time, we added the pork chop to our selection. Perfect! A scoop of ice cream always concludes the experience.
Went to terry black to get food and beer. Saw their sides and decided to just drink a couple beers. Left to Kreuz market because I wanted to give them a shot. Actually one of the workers at terry blacks said Kreuz had the best bbq a couple months before. So I gave them a shot. They have the best barbecue in Lockhart and I’m so glad I decided to stop by even tho my instincts were telling me no. I am so happy I did. Best bbq I’ve ever tasted and the sides are insane. Wow thank you. I’ll be back. They had live music as well which was amazing.
Easily the best BBQ I’ve ever had. This huge establishment was not busy at all on a Thursday night. They have 2 separate ordering stations - you go straight to the back for meat, then the main sitting area/cafeteria for sides. Everything is purchased per pound. We got the famous brisket, jalapeño and cheese sausages, and pork chop. For sides, we got creamed corn, macaroni, German potatoes, and pinto beans. The meat is weighed and placed on parchment paper - this is the real way to do this, and it perfectly held all the meat. When I say this was the best BBQ, I mean it. You won’t find brisket like this anywhere else but in Texas. It was so tender and smoked perfectly with a nice ring around the meat. The jalapeño sausage was out of this world. I could’ve eaten a couple of those and been happy. The pork chop was unassuming but packed huge flavor and was nice and fatty and broke apart with a plastic form. The sides were amazing. Creamed corn was the best I’ve ever had - get at least a pint of that. The macaroni was nice and cheesy, the pinto beans were standard, and the potatoes were packed with flavor. You won’t ever leave disappointed from here.
I'm from San Antonio and it is well worth the trip this is the best barbecue in Texas That's right I drive for over an hour to come here my family loves this place
I don't know how you can give this place less than five stars. This is the best barbecue I've ever had. Most of the sides are lacking, but so what. That is par for most great barbecue restaurants. The brisket, the turkey, the sausage, so good. Nothing was dry. Everything tastes on point. And the experience of ordering is unique and adds to the ambience.
When you stock in Lockhart you have to go to Kreuz market. The sausage was very good but what I liked the most was the pork chop. It had great texture and flavor to it. I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone going there. We had a great time and can’t wait to stop in again.
Always love coming here to eat. The atmosphere the food and service are all top notch. The sausage here is probably the best I have had anywhere. I normally pickup a case of frozen links to take home. During the week it's not bad crowd wise but the weekends, look to spend sometime in line. It generally moves along quickly. Lockhart has some cool stores to check out as well as some nice scenery. I would certainly recommend eating here. Update was here yesterday and they have some pork belly on Saturday and Sunday. Was very good! 12/17/23
What a place. Pits are enormous. Love the smell of smoke when you walk in. You can pay with cash or card here. Brisket, chicken, sausage and corn were all excellent. The burnt ends were perfectly cooked and delicious. Nice place and plenty of seating. I got both of the sausages and they were both pretty good. Half chicken fell off the bone and the brisket was good and tender. Staff was friendly. Lot of history as you walk around and look at the walls. I would go back for sure.
WOW! What an incredible place. Their BBQ brisket is the best. The crust is simple and tasty. They cook the brisket for a long time and it is obvious by the perfectly rendered fat. It was the best brisket I had all day (and I had a lot from different places). I cannot speak to the sides, but the brisket is amazing. The hot room is huge. This place is such a throwback to traditional BBQ. I really like the history of the place. If you are in Austin, make the drive to Lockhart to Kreuz Market--you will be glad you did!
Great BBQ spot a little outside of Austin. You can see, smell, and feel the heat from the famous pits when you order. Sides are also pretty good. Dining area is available both in air conditioned as well as patio/outdoor area with live music (when we went atleast). We got brisket and sausage which were incredible. the taste blew us away. Would definitely recommend to make that drive from Austin.
Amazing experience! We ordered the brisket, ribs, and sides, and everything was absolutely delicious. The brisket was tender and flavorful, the ribs were cooked to perfection, and the sides complemented the meal beautifully. The food quality was outstanding, and you can really taste the tradition and care that goes into it. Definitely one of the best BBQ experiences
I stopped in Kreuz Market after much anticipation and was not disappointed. The establishment is large and prepared accordingly. The restaurant style is sort of a classic butcher shop style and I ordered some lean shoulder clod and a beef rib which were great. I especially enjoyed the sauce, it was spiced and not overly ketchup-like, as some bbq sauce can be. Would recommend to all, 5/5! Thanks y'all!
Brisket was super tender and very flavorful. Pork chops were very moist and tender. Ribs were tender and juicy. Jalapeño sausage was delicious. No matter what you get, you will not be disappointed. This establishment shares a deep history with another of my favorite BBQ eateries in this town. Buen provecho.
Hands-down, the best barbecue in the world! I have visited many barbecue shops around Austin, Houston and Dallas. I’ve also been to Kansas City, Memphis, Georgia and South Carolina. No one beats Kreuz Market. Health portions and unbelievable sides! When you walk in the front door, the smoke will capture your senses and give you a an experience. I’ll never forget. THIS IS A MUST STOP!
We ordered brisket, ribs and sausage. I asked for the fatty cut of the brisket and they hooked us up! The brisket is phenomenal and extremely well prepared. I love the simple seasoning that highlights the quality of the beef that they use. The ribs were perfectly cooked, tender yet firm enough not to fall off the bone on the way to your mouth and I love eating all the little niblets around the cartilage. I only wish we had gotten there earlier to get the pork belly! Next time!
Visited the BBQ Capital of Texas and ate at 2 different spots . We started at Kreuz Market. First of all the payment system is a bit confusing you buy your meat and sides with 2 different transactions. Nothing wrong with that but its just kinda weird. My wife and I got Brisket and Turkey , Mac and Cheese and coleslaw. Everything was good. This maybe a spot you wanna visit earlier in the day to get the best version of the meats you can get. It’s a really cool building with a ton of space and history.
The best of the best BBQ!!! We live near Poteet, TX but the drive is well worth it for such amazing BBQ! We're making a monthly trek as our BBQ travel date. All other BBQ restaurants do not compare. It's a must-do! Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself. You won't regret it. I guarantee it!
Huge storied BBQ restaurant with several dining rooms and a large free parking lot. It's fun to order the meat in the back room where the pits are. The hashbrown casserole was especially good. They have a large free parking lot surrounding their building. The restaurant is a short ten minute walk from Lockhart's main square. After eating it's fun to take a walk around the nearby city park.
Words don’t even do it justice. This was the most flavorful, most tender barbecue I’ve ever had. I spent 60 bucks on 1/2 pound of beef shod, 1/2 pound of brisket, a half a chicken, 1 jalapeño cheese link, a fountain drink, a cup of Mac and cheese, and baked potatoes and my only regret is that I didn’t spend more. Every bite was memorable and all barbecue will be stacked up against this serene experience. My mouth waters thinking about it. Btw, there’s a live band so that was cool.
A hallowed hall of Texas barbecue. One of the all time greats. Must-stop on any trip to Lockhart. Order by the pound at the open ancient brick pits in the smoking room. Smoked pork chop, brisket, half chicken and beef sausage links are perfection. No sauce necessary ever. Pork spare ribs are some of the best anywhere. Highly recommend for the whole experience.
Food was all SO good! As you walk in you go all the way forward and order your meats first and pay there, then you go into the main dining area to order your sides. We tried the poblano cream corn, potato casserole, potato salad, Mac & cheese, pinto beans…brisket, ribs, & sausage. We also had ice cream before leaving! Our group was 12 today to celebrate a birthday. There’s plenty of seating available and some outdoor as well. Bathrooms were clean.
Again no pictures because I was too hungry 😋 Best sausages and yes better than Terry Black's. The beef was dry. I don't eat the sides. I get the free pickles, bread, and crackers 😋 🤪. Now when you go try the Prime Rib, Ribs (if you can afford them) 😅and the pork chops 😋 👍🏾
What a great taste of Texas!. After trying other Texas BBQ smokehouses, a local store owner mentioned Kreuz, which is nearly walking distance from downtown. We drove over around 2pm to find that the lunch crowd had left but the line was inside the door. (This apparently is a good sign that the wait is under 30 minutes. This gave us time to enjoy the atmosphere and prepare for wood-smoked brisket. We tried some of almost everything and got good recommendations from regulars while standing in line. The list included, Texas Brisket, *Texas Pork Rib, *Texas Smoked Turkey and *2×Texas German-style sausages (spicy and regular), plus Texas German-style potato salad and a small Texas Sauerkraut. The only questions were from the side dish area where only certain pickles were free with the barbecue. Probably could have skipped the sides, since the meats were sufficient and all tasted great. There was no live music but the soundtrack was good; the old displays and decorations were very festive and created an energetic vibe. The cost was commensurate with the value of top notch barbecue. The line moves quickly, so don't walk out if you are at least inside the door. It's well worth the wait.
This is the best BBQ in all of Texas hands down the tradition has never changed. Today i brought my beautiful mother to eat Kreuz fresh tender brisket and snoked sausage. It been 5 years since I've eaten here and im so happy to have spent the time here with mom. If you are new to Lockhart TX this is the spot to try first
This place is an absolute gem! I’d always been curious and finally made the trip, and it was more than worth it. The BBQ is outstanding—well worth the drive from SA—and the staff is just as incredible. The variety of meats is truly impressive, with clod on the menu (a rare find) that was absolutely delicious. The setup here is fantastic. There are three massive dining areas, plenty of parking, and everything feels welcoming and well-organized. The smoke room, where you pick out your meats, is an experience in itself—filled with the mouthwatering aromas of every cut imaginable. They offer a wide variety of sausages, and every bite tastes fresh and carefully prepared. It doesn’t stop at the meats, though. They’ve dedicated an entire room to sides, and you can tell just as much care goes into them. The mac and cheese is so well-seasoned it doesn’t need a single dash of salt or pepper, and the potato salad—served cold—tastes like something mom would make at home: comforting, simple, and absolutely satisfying. With fresh food, great drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, it’s the kind of place you don’t just visit once. I’ll absolutely be making that trip again—and many more times in the future.
Walking in everyone working was so nice and helpful, it was my first time here and I couldn’t be more impressed by the hospitality. Food was great, we did take out but the seating area was huge. Last place I went to in Lockhart charged us per jalapeños, onion and pickles this place did not, so that’s a plus. Definitely coming back better than the 3 other places I tried in the area.
Always amazing food!! The best moist brisket around! We always make this stop when we travel through a few times a year. They did seem a little short staffed in the “sides” section today but they were pretty busy this afternoon, even at 3:30pm. If you like sweet tea, theirs is GREAT! I’m definitely a tea snob and approve this message 😉 We had the mac and cheese, mustard potato salad and hot cream corn. ALL very good and highly recommend to try. I did grab some pecan pies and cherry cobblers to take home and try later. We have been to tons of BBQ places across Texas and this one is my favorite.
I mean I’ve been coming here a long time but have been out of the country for a good bit. After 5 years since my last visit not only is everything still amazing but now they have pork belly burnt ends that were my favorite bite of the day! So worth the visit. Great ribs, brisket and sausage. Yummy sides.
Choice selection of BBQ meats and amazing history. You can see, smell, and feel the heat from the famous pits where you select your meats. Sides were also excellent and friendly servers to help you select. Dinning area is air conditioned in a nice BBQ styled setting. We got brisket, sausage, and beef ribs and all were cooked perfectly and the taste blew us away. Loved dinning here! Forgot to mention they have blue bell ice cream, banana pudding, and pie for dessert.
It was just about everything I expected and hoped it would be. Great meats and sides. Friendly staff that cut it exactly to order. I left satisfied and smelling like a fire! Loved it!

Sliced brisket and jalapeño/cheese sausage was amazing love the beans and the corn also. It's fast service and friendly staff. Will be back
Great experience! You have to be there to have a once in a life time appreciation for bbq history.

Kreuz Market epitomizes Texas BBQ. However, it’s nothings special. It’s good utility BBQ meaning you could eat their brisket, for example, every day. Not too smokey. Our half pound order was dry, but had decent overall flavor. Some like Blacks, if you prefer it, do to it’s heavy smoke, can taste like eating charred wood. Pork Belly burnt end are a standout. Moreover Kreuz’s pits are inside so prepare to shower after you get home. It’s that Smokey. Also, everything else is a la cart including the pinto beans, which reduces the overall value of your purchase. Others like Coopers (fan favorite here) still offer free beans if you like them. Overall, good, but not great. We like to go if we want to walk through downtown Lockhart which is such a charming older Texas town and the BBQ capital of Texas. For variety visit Blacks and Terry Blacks BBQ all within a stones throw of one another. But bring a toothbrush and paste unless you prefer to taste burnt mesquite and oak for the remainder of the day.
Bbq was overall good. Brisket was just a little dry but not like other spots in town. Ribs were so close to being perfect. Turkey was excellent. Sausage was Lockhart sausage, typically dry. Bbq sauce was thin and mostly Worcestershire sauce. Big open space, friendly staff, one of the better bbq joints in Lockhart. Phot was $30 including tip.
This is my father's favorite place. He travels from Houston often to have lunch and bring us, his children, some sausage. We visited Sat, June 25th around 2pm. It was crowded, but there was plenty of seating inside and out. The line was to the door to order/pick up food but moved quickly. That's no minor feat considering there were 2 meat counters and 1 register in the smoke house area. I was amazed at the efficiency. The brisket is tender, juicy and flavorful. The pork ribs are not quite falling off the bone type, but still just as tender and full of flavor. The sausage here is one of our favorites. It is always smoked/grilled just right. The taste is always consistent from the last visit. There was a band playing in the area we were seated. They were not overly loud it was a nice atmosphere and we were still able to have a conversation while they played. A band plays every Sat 3p - 6pm.
My second stop and it got a lil better with the brisket, it was properly smoked, good smoke ring and they took there time that it relaxed. I got the point end, it was lightly seasoned. The Turkey sadly was not as good, no clean slices, slightly dry and not as well seasoned. The winner was their Jalepeno Sausage excellent snap on the casing, good pepper flavour and mild spice. Thank you for an excellent experience!
Great barbecue place. The brisket is pretty good, and the sides are delicious. The kids loved to see the huge building with the meat chopping and the huge tables were perfect for lots of people.
I'm taking a trip back to visit my new grandbaby and happened by this place. Not sure how I've missed it as I've been in Lockhart several times, and this place never came up as an option. If you've never been here like us, be prepared for it to be 110 degrees inside where you order and pay for your meat. They have all of their wood burning smokers going in this area. I enjoyed this as I love the smell of a wood fire. They have a variety of options to choose from, and their slices are huge. I ordered 3 slices of brisket and ended up only buying one. My spouse chose the turkey, also in giant slices. Once we paid for our meat purchases, we then moved into the air-condition section of the building. This is where you will find your condiments, sides, drinks, and desserts. We chose a small container of potato salad. As we were traveling, this ended the visit. We choose no sauce because it doesn't travel well in a paper container in the car. This, however, may have been a mistake. While the meat was decent, it wasn't something I would particularly drive back for. For a dish that is so simple, it's surprising how many places jack it up. Kreuz knows how to make potato salad! While it wasn't our favorite meal, we will give it another try as an eat-in experience.
I preface this review with my acknowledgment that people like smoked meats in a variety of ways. I prefer mine to have a medium smoked flavor throughout. I found both the brisket and pork ribs to lack this. Bark was good. Meat was juicy and tender. Jalapeno sausage was delicious. Cole slaw was nothing special. Paying for meat and then paying for sides is very inconvenient.
Tried the top 4 Lockhart BBQ spots today: Chisholm Trail BBQ, Black’s BBQ Lockhart, Smitty’s Market, and Kreuz Market, in that order, based on Google reviews. Kreuz made number 2 on our list. It was a lot of BBQ today! I like Kreuz Market’s atmosphere with plenty of space for big groups. Friendly staff here too and the line moved quickly. We got: brisket with extra bark (bark piece had the best flavor today but the other piece was not as tender), pork belly (quite tasty with a great sweet sauce but there was a little too much crunch; it didn’t melt in my mouth but was still good), ham (ordered it because it’s only served on the weekends and it was a good ham but not anything too special). I would go back to Kreuz and try more meat and some sides.
They have great sausage here. The jalapeño cheddar has a nice kick! The price for sausage is very good. They have great sides, the mac and cheese, and loaded potatoes are amazing. They also have ice cream and good desserts. They have a lot of indoor seating compared to most bbq places. Although the smokers are inside so the main area is hazy and smoky from the fires. Smells like good Ole BBq!!
This is my second time coming to this place, we ordered a variety of meats and sides. I really don't have anything bad to say, brisket & chicken were moist, sausage was good, pork belly was the star of the meal delicious 😋. Staff was real nice we will be back when we are back in the area!
Have wanted to visit here for years. Finally got the chance, and it did not disappoint. Went on a Wednesday just before lunch. It was not crowded at all. The aroma was powerful as soon as you got out of your car. Once inside, the aroma only grew stronger. As you entered the pit area, the smells, the smoke in your eyes, everything, made you know you were in for a good meal. You order and pay for the meat in one area. The sides, drinks, etc. are in another. The employees were very helpful and patient with the ordering. You can order by the pound or slice. Once everything was ordered and paid for, we sat down and ate. The brisket was awesome. The sausages had a great snap, texture and taste. The pork ribs were tender. The Beef Ribs were good but could have been rendered down a little longer. Keep in mind if you order a Beef Rib, the one pictured was just around 2 lbs. which can run up you bill quickly The Cream Corn, Mac & Cheese, and Banana Pudding were great. Overall, a very good experience. We will make that journey again.
Came in to order for 8 adults & this is what I found. Pretty good tasting original sausage. They were unfortunately out of beef ribs. I don't recommend spending $7 for a somewhat dry chicken thigh/leg quarter that they advertise as a "half chicken"... I'll just go spend $6 at H-E-B & have 6 of those and smoke it myself. Lacks flavor and is dry. The brisket isn't too bad. Baked potato casserole is good. I was tempted to try their Mac & cheese but $13.99/quart for some cafeteria looking, caked with black pepper "macaroni and cheese", that's a hard no for me. Would i go here again? Sure, if I was local. They don't accept call-in orders so be prepared to stand in a long line if it's the weekend. It does move fairly quick though.
I’ve visited many barbecue places, and this one felt very interesting and different. The space is very large and well set up, making it a great place to visit with family or friends. Unfortunately, we arrived a bit late and many items were already sold out, including the beef ribs, which I was really hoping to try. At that point, the only meats available were sausages, brisket, chicken, and ham. Because of this, I highly recommend going early so you can enjoy the full experience and try everything on the menu. The brisket had great flavor and was overall very good, although a few pieces were slightly dry. As for the sausages, they’re not my personal favorite, but my husband and my son tried the jalapeño sausage and another variety, and both thought they were very good. They offer two barbecue sauces: one that is sweeter and a bit more fruity, and another that is bolder and more robust. Personally, I preferred the sweeter, fruity-style sauce. The sides were excellent: • The jalapeño corn was absolutely delicious. • The mac and cheese was really good. • The baked potato was very well prepared and flavorful. • The coleslaw was okay, nothing special. For dessert, we tried the caramel and pecan ice cream, and it was quite good. The service was excellent, everyone was very friendly and welcoming, which added a lot to the experience. I recommend this place as an experience; it’s definitely something different and worth visiting.
Well… 1st timer here - honestly it was just ok - the potatoes casserole fantastic - but the people working here need to smile at least a little - it’s Texas BBQ be happy - enjoy it - have a bbq greeter at the door with enthusiasm and help navigate the large place and multiple lines (bbq vs sides vs dessert) is needed I’ll give it a “not bad”with huge potential (Happy employees make a restaurant)
A friend and I taking a tour of Lockhart BBQ.. Ambience: you enter the smokey pit area and pick your protein... Interesting. The dining area is large and more designed for families. Brisket: not as moist as Terry Black's but still tasted great Pork ribs: done well, tasted great Sausage: ring style, my buddy loved it, but i preferred more casing crunch; also the e as more finely ground Sweet tea: did not purchase, but I can see they use Community Coffee, whose ice tea I always enjoy Pricing: it not about the pricing today
I finally made it to Kreuz to try their BBQ. The brisket was fine, but honestly a little dry for my taste, which was disappointing since that’s usually the star of the plate. The sausage, however, was really flavorful and juicy, definitely the highlight of the meal. The atmosphere is great—big open space with that classic Texas BBQ vibe, and it feels like the kind of place you want to sit down and enjoy a meal with friends. Service was straightforward and quick. Overall, it was a decent experience, but I’d probably come back more for the sausage and atmosphere than the brisket.

Pork spareribs were delicious, brisket was moist and tender, sausage wasn’t too much to my liking, I didn’t care too much for the texture of it and didn’t think it had much flavor.
This was a disappointing bbq experience. We read online that this was one of the great bbq restaurants in Texas. We did come on a Tuesday an hour before closing, so it might have been a mid-week slump. The service was brusque. The brisket was delicious, undeniably. My father said it was simply seasoned, just salt and pepper. He lives in TX and eats bbq like tiger shark (I’m sure he’s eaten license plates and buoys and things without noticing it), so I accept his opinion. I enjoyed it, but I go for the bark. Not much smokiness, despite the robust smoke ring. The sausage was disappointing, however. It had a quarter inch smoke ring but there wasn’t much flavor. To me, it tasted like a meatball. The beans weren’t terribly flavorful either. It wasn’t the best, given the historic nature of the establishment, but maybe that’s high expectations. I’d love to go back and give it a second chance!
First time here actually. Presentation on was nice, actual skin of the briskets was burnt, I like that don’t know of it’s not normal. Did not like the pork ribs at all. Sorry no flavor and had to chew off the bone. I prefer baby back ones spoiled I guess. Jalapeño cheese sausage was good. Always to much food but love trying Today is a Tuesday not very many people here during lunch hour 11:30 AM atmosphere is killer where the pits are vibe was really somber. Disappointed.
The food was pretty good but not the best. There are a couple of much better choices less than a mile away like Blacks and Chisholm Trail BBQ. But the jalapeño sausage was pretty good here and the brisket wasn't bad. But I don't like the set up at all. You have to order and pay for your meat in one room and then order and pay for your sides and drinks in another room. I don't like having to order and pay twice. The mini pies and desserts look delicious but are a little dry and overpriced in my opinion.
Great old town atmosphere! The history is rich with many memorialized items. Live music was playing when we arrived. The line was long so I expected the food to be amazing BUT it wasn’t. I had better brisket at Rudy’s and better smoked chicken at Salt Lick. Wish they offered salads for the prissy Princesses Lol. I ordered beans, slaw and fresh tomatoes to make my own salad. Great experience though. I can say I’ve been here but I don’t plan to return.
It was very underwhelming. It was a Monday so very empty. Only two tables taken. We did brisket fatty and beef ribs. Beef ribs were better than the brisket. Just not a ton of flavor on either. We also got the Mac and cheese and it tasted like school lunch. Coleslaw was just bland. After two days of Interstellar and Snows maybe our expectations were too high.
Not to beat a dead horse mentioned by countless people in the past, but if you're a fan of bbq, you owe it to yourself to visit this place at least once. Out of the 3 historic restaurants in Lockhart, Kreuz Market was my favorite for a combination of reasons, including the history, building layout, and variety of bbq meats offered. However, the last several visits (attached food pictures cover different visits), have led me to re-evaluate my opinion. I will say the pork chop (or pork ribs if no chops), should be high on the list to try. They always seem to be on point. Good flavor, not too dry, good seasoning. A word on prices - the pork chops increased $4/lb, from spring to fall of 2024. That seems crazy to me (pictures of prices reflect April 2024 and December 2024). The beef sausage is also well-known. In my experience, some days can be better than others. I've had some good sausage, and I've had some sausage that was dried out more than I'd like. I always used to buy a couple slices of pit ham. Their ham in April 2024 was $15.90/lb. In December 2024, the ham had increased in price by $2, to $17.90/lb. This is boneless ham, comparable to ham that can be bought in the store for a few dollars per pound. And store-bought ham is already smoked. The pit ham is still fine, but I really feel it's not worth the price increase, much less overall price. After several visits, I've decided to continually skip purchasing the brisket. If you're only going to go here once, you'll likely get a slice to try. The brisket has been hit or miss the few times I've purchased it. It's continually been tougher and dried out more than I like, and the fat is never rendered enough for my liking. I realize some restaurants cook their briskets at higher temperatures/quicker than other restaurants, but as the prices have gone up $3/lb from spring to fall 2024, and overall price now approaches $30/lb, I'll likely continue to skip the brisket. With every new bbq restaurant that's popped up over the last decade plus, there are a multitude of options out there. The price increases at this place astound me. Whatever your definition of "craft bbq" is, I really feel this place has started charging "craft bbq" prices for normal bbq. Bottom line - I would still recommend a visit. I would also say average bbq at above average prices.
Keep in mind that everyone has a different idea of food bbq. I think the BBQ was good. I was disappointed with the brisket. They didn't have burnt ends. We like the fatty brisket but usually the fat is rendered. There was a lot of fat. The lean brisket was tender but lacked flavor. I'm not sure if there was a rub used. Now the sausage was amazing and well worth the drive. They don't slice it for you though and it's not easy to slice with a plastic butter knife. I also liked the ribs. They were perfectly cooked and had a nice flavor. Slaw was good and the cream corn was heavenly. The service staff was friendly and we were quick to get our food. It wasn't very busy but the first 3 tables we went to were all dirty. Overall the place could use a good cleaning. I will say that the cook areas looked clean, it was things like decor looked like it hasn't seen a duster for many years. I really loved the rustic look and sitting areas and would go back for that sausage but there are other BBQ places higher on my list overall.
Been coming here since the 90s and this is the first bad review I'd ever considered posting about this place. I usually love it... But today (2/15/26) the QUALITY was WAY OFF. 1/2 lb of prime rib, 1/2 lb of ham (almost $50 for one person) and I didn't even bother to get a too-go container for what I didn't finish. -- I was traveling and hoped for a 2nd meal at hotel that night.... I probably should've taken time to talk to a manager but was in a hurry...... What gives, man? I hope it was a fluke because I don't need another institution to disappear... Cheers for decades I enjoyed going out of my way to visit....
I’ve been to many BBQ places, and while this one wasn’t my favorite, it felt more like a backyard BBQ experience. The inside was nice, but the smoke was very overwhelming, especially when ordering the brisket right next to the smoker. The brisket itself was drier than I had hoped. The smoked ham was awesome, and the sides were decent—I especially loved the fideo. I also didn’t care for not having to-go boxes and having to wrap the meat in paper. Overall, it tasted like BBQ you’d have at someone’s backyard gathering.
They said, “Go to Lockhart for the BBQ.” With that in mind, we tried one of the so-called “big three” with high expectations—and unfortunately, it was a swing and a miss. The first bite of brisket fell flat, and the second and third confirmed it. Overall, the brisket was disappointing compared to many other Texas alternatives. It lacked depth of flavor beyond the bark, and even the bark itself was minimal. I specifically asked for the fattier, juicier portion, yet what I received was still on the dry side. We skipped the sides entirely; they looked dry and overcooked, as though they’d been sitting out far too long. One bright spot: the jalapeño and cheese sausage was on point—great flavor, well-balanced heat, and excellent smokiness. I won’t be returning. That said, we’ll give the other two Lockhart staples a try next time we’re in town—hoping they live up to the reputation this one did not.
Not as good as it used to be. Seasoning and cuts of meat being used in their sausage isn't the same. Used to love their sausage when I was younger. Brisket, Porkchop and chicken was excellent. Sausage and prime rib was ehhh... Need more seasoning on prime rib and in their sausage. Porkchop was super moist and brisket was perfect. Sat in smokehouse area away from the noisy dinning room. Very peaceful and relaxing.
Unfortunately I have to give my experience here 3 stars. I was really looking forward to some good barbecue in the barbecue capital of Texas but was met with disappointment in the form of dry brisket and ok sausage. The sides are good with my favorite being the creamed corn, the turkey was good, and the best thing we ordered was the half chicken. The staff just seemed down and annoyed that they had to do their job. The atmosphere was the best part of the whole experience with the real Texas feel and nostalgia.

I thought the food was pretty good, but we didn't get sides. I thought the separation of meat and sides was kinda weird. You have to wait in a long line and then wait in another line too?? I think …

Been coming here since a little girl and always had a good experience but on my most recent visit didn’t have the most pleasant experience they had the nerve to charge us for 2 pounds when we didn’t even get close to that and when I said something to the cashier she just mentioned the price and I said I know but we didn’t get the full 2 pounds so yall could atleast give us that if you’re charging for it and she just ignored me and completed the transaction, loved coming here until now. We will just go to Black’s instead from now on
Store was slow. Arrived at 5:40pm. No one waiting. Guy that helped us did not greet us, kept looking at his watch like time was going to go faster. All 4 guys & a woman all looked mad. I’m sure they are tired but be friendly & not rude. Also I’ve been coming here for the past 20 years, & the service has declined. Make think twice before coming back or recommending you all.
I have never thought brisket could be so dry. In Lockhart for vacation and was excited to try a new BBQ spot, as I usually go to Black’s/Terry Blacks. I have regretted that decision. Brisket was as dry as day old roast beef and the Mac&Cheese tasted like Krafts. Don’t waste your time and money here. A shame to the BBQ community.
I've been to Kreuz many times before and always stop any time we drive down south. My review is intended to inform the staff of expectations returning customers are used to. This trip we happened to bring along a friend to experience the best brisket ever, only this was not case as the brisket was dry, it very small smoke ring, and looked as if the fat had not rendered. Hopefully this
The people that serve you the meat are just NOT friendly at ALL, I felt like a child and they were my parents or a teacher that's mean. I got chicken (I took to go) sausage (VERY dry) and brisket that was overcooked and just not good and a side of corn and ice tea. For a grand total of $35.57 after tip, for 1 person, I hand to feel for my wallet to make sure they didn't take that as well, all around a VERY disappointing experience, but pretty typical of a LOT of BBQ places these days, I am just going to stop going out for BBQ, it's to expensive and the food is usually just NOT up to par like today.
I paid 50 bucks for two cold beef ribs. I could've fed myself for a week and it would've tasted better or at the very least have been warm

Well, got the brisket dark parts, two pork ribs, and their original sausage link, the brisket was very chewy, and so fatty, Franklin's in Austin has a video on YouTube, that shows how to properly…
Service (self service except meat cutting) was ok. ambiance was below average. Food was the worst BBQ I have ever had. We had ribs, shoulder. They did not have beef ribs, chicken or turkey. The sho…
I’m a born and raised Texan. This is, hands down, the worst barbecue I’ve ever had. The brisket was fatty and tasty wonky. The sausage looked like burned turds. Do yourself a favor and eat somewher…
I've always driven by and wanted to try this place. It's ambiance and the building are top notch. The food, we'll it's the opposite. For $30/lb you expect good brisket. It tremendously lacked flavor. The sausage was so dry! I was actually upset that i was sold this. How did it not get flagged? Got some macaroni and potato salad as well. The macaroni was dry and tasteless. But the highlight of the menu was the potato salad! Checking it off my list. Sorry guys Wait staff was very unfriendly like they didn't want to be there. A smile helps
This place was lacking in every way. I wish we’d gone to Blacks BBQ or anywhere else. The service was terrible, NO ONE there was friendly or happy to be there, which right away makes me nervous. The set up is confusing, they’re only using 1/2 of the building, cause business is slow (I know why now). After you order your meat separately, then you go through another door for the sides, when I opened that door it smelled dirty and disgusting. I was scared to even try a side… I got cream corn and green beans, both were dreadful! I’ve have much, much, much, more better food at a local Rudy’s! The prices are very high, brisket had a ton of fat but was dry, idk how that even happens, the sausage was all shriveled up and warped in appearance. I don’t know how this place is in business, my group (4people) was so hungry, but we did not leave satisfied. Save yourself the rude service, high prices, weird dining set up, gross and dry food and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
Came with my cousins from out of town..we walked in to get a table but walked in the wrong door to order food..Our mistake..we then noticed that there was a line..The bigger Hispanic guy just gave us a really mean look..When we finally came up to order everyone but especially him was looking like they were annoyed to do their job..No smile no Hi how are you doing?Just what can I get you?Man we spent over $150 on meat man at least a thank you or a smile would be nice..The Food was very good but if you have to deal with rude service I'd say go to Blacks barbecue there they are so so nice..I mean they know customer service there. This place has mostly unhappy middle age people that are annoyed by working here it seems. I'd definitely skip out here and go to blacks or even Chisholm trail they will greet you as you walk in the door..
If you’re looking for good BBQ go somewhere else. Overpriced for the quality of meat you pay for. Brisket was so tuff could not pull it apart. Told an employee our concern acted like they didn’t care. Which by the way none of them acted to happy to be there. Doesn’t hurt for a smile from at least one of them. The only good thing was the potato casserole! There are plenty of other bbq places in Lockhart to eat at !
We ordered 1/2 lb. brisket, 1/2lb. pork ribs and 1/2 chicken. Brisket was super super Dry like if we were eating a bag of chips and the pork ribs like if we were having cracklings. The chicken was good.It just killed our BBQ experience sadly.$90 for nothing. At least the sides were good.
All it takes is one bad interaction to turn a spot that you have frequented for years and told everyone about into a spot that you will never return to. Bad attitudes and negativity, resulting from the fact that they didn’t have water cups is all it took this time. I asked for a water cup. The young male employee told me they didn’t have them and I could either have a bottle of water or a regular cup insinuating I would have to pay. I said you have to offer Water and with an attitude he said that’s what I said “you can have it” so I chose a bottle of water and when I got to the register, the lady refused to give it to me and tried to charge me for it, ( I in fact couldn’t have it) and then handed me a cup, but again insidious negative behavior and condemnation. Some people don’t want to drink soda or sugary drinks. all I wanted was a water cup but I got a much more. A bad attitude and a reason never to return.
This food is definitely overrated. I mean, if your food is going to be trash at least have good service. The service was worse than the food. The ribs were dry, the links were like mush on the inside with very little flavor. The brisket was decent. Places in DFW runs circles around them. I would not recommend. And after reading other reviews this is making sense. Someone leaving a good or bad review is an opportunity. It shouldn’t be taken as someone trying to hurt your business. Says a lot about this place reading the owner’s responses.
