Opinions de Sushi Ai Long Beach
One of my favorite sushi places in Belmont Shore. I would definitely recommend eating there. If you like baked rolls, make sure to try the baked salmon roll! Yum!
Awesome sushi on 2nd St. in the heart of Belmont Shores open until 11 on weekends. Full beer & wine menu with a large selection of (my favorite) cold saki & a ton of house rolls. My favorite cooked roll is the baby lobster crunch & for the cut roll fan the spicy tuna is out of this world fresh with just the right amount of heat. Service is a bit slow but that's due to being short staffed as a result of covid & the wait staff makes up for it by helping eachother out & running food, refilling drinks & bussing tables without worrying whos section it is. It can get pretty loud inside but outside seating is nice & set back enough from the street that you don't feel like you're dining in a street side parking space (even though you are!). Reasonable prices for above average quality is just one reason I recommend this spot & have made it a regular go to when looking for a sushi fix.
I really enjoy that there's an outdoor sitting area. The restaurant was very clean. Our waitress for the evening was very enjoyable. It was a nice selection of sashimi and sushi. I will be returning to this restaurant. I enjoyed my crazy roll. Also my fresh cucumber wrapped Sushi was delicious.
First time there. I love sushi and I've tried many many places. This is one of the best. The fish is fresh and the service is above the rim Definitely recommend
This place is a perfect example of the local community. We love the honest and happy welcoming atmosphere, the awesome 90s rock songs, the variety of the menu; ranging from authentic Japanese to southern California spin on traditional dishes. What is most important to my family and I is that this restaurant participates in many of the local 2nd Street events. Especially strollin saver. We love meeting with the owner and the staff. They are more than just sushi, they're a part of the local community. Keep up the great work. Ps. Thank you for giving my daughter one of those decorative umbrellas on our way out. It made her day for sure.
This is my new favorite sushi place! Too bad it is an hour away, but I guess I will need to visit Long Beach more often. We got lucky and got a table for 6. The food was served quickly and was delicious as well as plated beautifully. I don't know what the thing was that was served on fire, but it was awesome! I got to try a lot of new things I don't usually find at my sushi place. Especially loved the deep fried spicy tuna on the deep fried rice! Wow! Also loved the decor. This is the place to be!
★★★★★ 5/5 stars Sushi Ai in Long Beach is a fantastic find! I visited for dinner on a Sunday night and tried their combo, which was excellent in both quality and portion size. While I don't personally eat sushi or sashimi, I was craving some good katsu, and Sushi Ai didn't disappoint. Their katsu was delicious and perfectly prepared. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, and the service was efficient and friendly. Even if you're not a fan of raw fish, Sushi Ai offers a variety of options that cater to different tastes. Overall, I highly recommend Sushi Ai for anyone looking for delicious Japanese cuisine in Long Beach. It's a great spot for both sushi lovers and those who prefer cooked dishes. You won't be disappointed!
tasty!very gooood service and food!definitely come again
Best sushi on second street. The redheaded waitress was so awesome. She is literally the nicest. Always has a smile on her face and great recommendations for sushi. Highly recommend this place. Great service overall!
The staff is just very friendly and so welcoming. The overall atmosphere is very nice. The food is always fresh and they have a really great selection of sushi and other kind of food. If you're a fan of bowls they also have poke bowls. They also have a really nice bar area where you can watch the chefs make the food. I also like this place because they have an outdoors area where you can bring your dog. They also have heaters and it's very pleasant on a windy or colder day.
perfect dinner 😍 such good service and authentic Japanese food. Super fresh seafood
As a sushi lover 🍣🍱, this place is honestly one of the best I’ve been to. Everything was super fresh, especially the raw fish, you can really taste the quality. We tried a variety of sushi and all tasted really great, The sashimi was really good as well. Great selection and the place was clean, which I always appreciate. They also offer alcohol-free wine and beer, which is a nice bonus. Definitely coming back. I recommend trying “salmon lovers” it was our favorite.
Best sushi in the area. So delicious, so fresh, so tender. Excellent service, nicest staff. The waitress recommended sauces to our order. Perfect match. They also were very nice with our dog, what is very important for us. 10 stars! Strongly recommend:)))
I did omakase with Chris and he definitely did not disappoint. Everything was delicious and fresh and most items had his own unique flair I haven't encountered elsewhere. I think several of his creations deserve a permanent place on the menu as appetizers or special nigiri/ sashimi. The shishito peppers were really delicious, perfect combination of delicate spice and rich flavor. The baked mussels were way better than I thought they would be, huge flavor and perfectly cooked. The only downside I could mention was that they were out of uni (my favorite), but he more than made up for that with everything else! Highly recommend! I shall be back this week! Enjoy!
Cute sushi restaurant with amazing selections. There was so much, I didn't know what to try. The presentation of the sushi was beautiful and the server was very friendly and easy to converse with. I really enjoyed the shishito peppers. Overall, it's a good restaurant on 2nd St with outdoor seating perfect for people watching.
If you love garlic, get the spicy tuna tempura ….. it’s amazing ! Lobster lover ? Get the chubby lobster , it’s also amazing … love salmon ? Get the baked salmon roll 🔥 . The quality here is very very consistent, one of my favorites spots
Incredible service. Unmatched. The first place I go when I return in town is here. Best blue fin, aji, and ju toro. Don't forget the fresh Wasabi! Always trust the sushi chef!
This place was so delicious! The staff was polite and kind, and the food was very fresh and tasted delectable! Highly recommend!
Always favorite place to come back for good quality sushi ! Good portions and good price 😁
One of our favorite spots on 2nd Street! We ordered the rainbow roll 🍣, a yellowtail hand roll, and the chicken udon 🍜 The fish is so fresh and delicious, and the udon was great as well! Service here is always the friendliest and most helpful, and I love the atmosphere. Come try it if you haven’t yet!
Excellent sushi, great options with reasonably good pricing. All my party loved their orders. Great service as well
My fav sushi spot in Long Beach. The service is great and the food is definitely worth going back for. Give it a chance and I think you will agree..

My fav sushi spot in Long Beach. The service is great and the food is definitely worth going back for. Give it a chance and I think you will agree..
Excellent quality fish and greatly prepared nigiris (great proportion of shari to fish, and well mounted), they have great Toro, Uni and probably the best Unagi that I have ever had. You can tell the sushi is good when the octopus is well prepared (soft and not chewy). Every time I come to LB I have to go... amongst the best sushis in America full stop.
This is the best sushi spot in SoCal and I’ve made the rounds. Thomas is an epic human. He adds so much joy to our experience. R2. Again, R2. This roll is new. It just works. Well. The balance is unreal with the micro greens. The name is deceptive, but, trust me, it’s something worth a dive. It’s rich and delicate. It’s fresh and decadent. It’s the filet mignon of sushi rolls. Bottom line, make the choice to get here and enjoy their quality. Best garlic ponzu too.
As someone who has lived in Sapporo Japan for a number of years and knows good sushi, this place is very solid. Especially for the price. Big shout out to Chris the sushi Chef. Very friendly and easy going. 10/10 would come back again. The lunch special is awesome
Favorite sushi place on 2nd street. Customer service is always top notch and the sushi is consistently incredible. It’s a local gem. Their updated menu is fun and with the times but I’ll always recommend to talk to the sushi chef and get their recommendations. Regardless of what you order, you can not go wrong here.
Chris the chef was so nice and accommodating. It was my husbands birthday and he works late but Chris still did omakase for us. We will be back. The fish was so fresh. Thank you!

Love the baked salmon; been a long time fan of Sushi Ai . Their prices have skyrocketed since the last time I've been there. $60-$70 for 2 rolls 2 apps and 2 drinks is now $100-$120. The food is still delicious but the price is now too high to enjoy Sushi Ai regularly.
We like it more then sushi on fire. Have to update my review. Update now from 10/2018. Change in amount of of total rolls served in the restaurant. The size of each roll is a lot smaller now. Quality of rolls is down. Still will eat here but not so happy with over experience now. 3.5 stars. I have the feeling they might be shutting down ?
Rolls were good. Service was good. I appreciated how committed they were about food satisfaction because they overcooked a roll by mistake, told me it was on the house and was cooking another one correctly. Dining on the heated patio while watching the Laker game with a tower of beer was definitely a vibe.
This place was great, the only reason i cant give full stars was the sloppy prep on a few pieces of fish we were served. They missed a bone in two separate orders of sashimi. Not a deal breaker, but still worth a deduction. Other than that, the fish was fresh and rice was proportional. They prepped a whole spanish mackerel for us including the fried head and skin. See photo. It was delicious.
Sushi Ai is definitely a solid spot for sushi. The rainbow sushi is very flavorful and well prepared, with rice that’s just right—not hard and not overly sticky. I also tried the Spicy Tiger, which was okay, but leaned more on just being spicy rather than offering a balanced flavor, so that was a bit of a downside. The customer service here is great, and the restaurant itself is very clean and welcoming. The only drawback is that there can be a hefty wait for your food to be prepared, and they don’t offer all-you-can-eat, though they do have weekday discounts which is a nice touch. Overall, a great place to enjoy fresh sushi if you don’t mind waiting a little.
Sushi Ai is really really good, happy hour all day, I love the happy hour choices good sushi! I try to come by once a week, hot sake and a Asahi on draft. Happy hour menu has changed a bit but still good deals. Sushi always taste fresh, and the service is always very nice.

I hate to leave a 3-star review, but work needs to be done here. I’ll start with the good. Our food, when it finally came was very good. We ordered Hawaiian Rolls, the Chubby Lobster and the Vegas roll. All of the food was wonderful. The tuna on the Hawaiian rolls was fresh and very tasty. The Chubby Lobster was interesting and we all enjoyed it. The Vegas Roll was a mouthwatering adventure for the mouth. Now, the problems. We’ll start with the tables. They are so sticky our cups had to be dislodged with every sip. We could tell this had been an ongoing issue as my daughter was able to read several menu items from the remnants of menus previously stuck to the table. For the record, they are not even using paper menus. They are totally reliant on QR code menus. So there is really no excuse for not taking care of the sticky table issue. The service was quite sub-par. The hostess brought us drinks which were empty before any server even greeted us. The food also too far too long to come out based in on how busy they were not. All in all, good food, bad experience.
It makes me really sad to write this review because generally I like Sushi Ai! The sushi is fresh and the prices are good. However, the service I received tonight was not good at all. It took forever for anyone to take our order and we even said twice that we were ready but nobody came over to help us. Then it took forever for the food to come out. We had all finished our meal and my mom still hadn’t received her food. Even two orders of rice were extremely slow and we had to remind the server that we ordered them. Eventually, we asked the server to take the tempura off the bill since it had taken so long and he flat out ignored us! We had to flag him down again just to have a real conversation with him about the service. I will still give them a second chance because like I said, I usually like this spot! But unfortunately tonight just didn’t cut it.
Been coming here for years. First time we are puzzled by the size of the sushi roll. Spider roll that I alway have was paper thin and hardly had any fried crab. Truly surprised of the difference in the size of the serving! Guess Won’t be ordering it any more.

CAUTION!!! Sushi night out, turned for the worst. Wife and I love sushi, first time here last night. Service was superb, Dinning location was well set. She had mentioned a roll with shrimp tasted like soap, we thought just a twist on taste buds. We stopped eating due to wife not feeling well immediately, shes a lady so she held it down til we arrived home and threw it all up. I decided to write this review at 3am same night with disgust to sushi and shame of what we spent was not worth the night out. I called restaraunt, after arriving home and tending to the disaster wife experienced, to hopefully help others avoid the same experience asking them to make sure their shrimp or something of the 7 items we ordered was in good condition to be used. I understand maybe the lack of staff may have played a part in this, maybe due to pandemic. I only hope they checked, becaused they said manager would return my call and did not hopefully busy correcting said food situation. I write reviews only when experience was awesome and a must, or when trying to save the public from a bad experience. We really wanted to like this place and make it part of our rotation, but this has made the AVOID list for us.
Good food, bad experience. Service was lackluster to say the least. Restaurant was less than half full on a Sunday night, we did not get a drink order taken for 15 minutes, and food another 15 after that. The food itself was quite good when it arrived, though our server perhaps forgot our gyoza as that took an hour and a reminder. No discount, one small apology for the wait. I'm in the service industry, I understand we all have bad nights. Let's assume it was a very bad night for my server.
Currently, I WISH I could stay as positive as I was before. The specialty rolls are still solid options, but I can't fathom paying $25-30 for a bento box that DOESN'T include rice or miso soup. The salad was bare bones. The $14 for (very much their own style) Karaage was the straw that kinda got me to revise this down. This hurts to do, but the quality or amount has to match the value. If I can pay $4 less and get a BIGGER pile of Karaage from a Ramen restaurant, with juicier cuts and better breading, or $10 less and get a more complete Bento....then my appraisal has to match. It should not take 20 minutes for that Karaage to come out either. It's paler than a vampire, and nothing about the chicken is exemplary. Other places are faster, cheaper, and equal or better quality.
Debitted too much from my card, would not recommend. I was there 9th May 2025 in the evening, and served by a man, in case the manager wants to resolve how this could have happened.
I arrived at 8pm 2 hours before closing- on a Wednesday night. I joined the forty minute waiting list. After an hour of not receiving a call to see if there was a table open already, I was told they were closing for the night and sorry they did not call me. They were not extremely busy to set aside a table for 2 or to at least call/text me ab their issue. Sounds like they are pretty terrible at running a restaurant efficiently.
Update: 12/31/2020. I chosed this place for my last meal of 2020. Unfortunately, it was a regretful decision. I ordered a bento box; while I was paying for my meal I noticed two sushi Ai paper bags sitting on the counter. The employee was helping another customer and going back and forth trying to finish his order. By the time the other customer left taking one of the bags she finally gave me the second bag with my order, from the counter. My food was just getting colder and colder, even when I had already paid for it, it was just sitting on the counter, all she had to do was to hand it to me. I asked the employee at least twice regarding my food being hot. I asked her when I was paying for it and I asked her again when she handed me the bag; both times she replied, "It is hot".. I took my meal across the street where I was parked. I ate in my car hoping to eat a hot meal,, according to the employee. The food was deplorable. The rice was cold, the tempura was bearly warm, the California rolls were very tiny and were falling apart, I bearly got enough Wasabi for one California roll. The worst part was the chicken. The portion was small, the chicken on top was barely warm and the chicken on the bottom was cold. Some slices of chicken were hard like a rock. This is not the first time that this happens. I stopped going to this place for a few months for the same reason; there's something wrong with the cheap chicken that is used at this place, sometimes it is hard like a rock, impossible to eat. I didn't want to end this year on a sour note by going back to complain about it and waste my time getting another deplorable meal. I just threw it in the trash can. A complete waste of money and time. I am extremely disappointed, I wasn't expecting to get such a horrible piece of garbage for lunch. I have been going to this place for years, sometimes is bad, other times is decent, but today was worst than ever. I have never been so disappointed with this place, I consider this bento box the worst meal of the year. What a way to end the year paying for a meal and getting pure garbage in return. After so many years of coming to Sushi Ai, most likely I am not coming back. Previous review: This place sometimes is good, but sometimes is not that good. I used to go very often for lunch, but a couple of times I got what was supposed to be chicken breast that was most likely not chicken breast. I am still wondering whether it was real chicken or who knows what it really was. It was hard like a rock, my fork and knife couldn't get through at all. I showed it to the staff and I tried to cut it in front of them so they could see it by themselves. The table was shaking as I tried to cut it to no avail. They had no explanation why the chicken was so hard. That was a turn off. Most times customer service is good, but sometimes depending on the waitress the service is not that good. I really dislike when they bring a hardly warm miso soup cup that is less than half full. The waitress only said "I am sorry about that". She didn't even offer to replace it. It has happened in a few occasions I am not eager to go back to this place anymore.i
Never took our order after 30+min waiting in a mostly empty restaurant. One of the only places open past 9, we got there at 8:50 and immediately sat ourselves. The waiter brought us water then disappeared. Another couple showed up at 9:10 and were told it was almost last call. Our waiter took their order immediately and disappeared. Another waiter saw we were still waiting at 9:20, told us he’d be with us in a second, then stood next to our table chatting with his friends for 10 minutes. We had to just leave because clearly we were invisible to the staff.
