From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere sets the tone it's super chill and cozy!The lighting is soft, the music makes me sing and bop and there's a relaxed vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. Its our 2nd time here and we travel 1hr and a half because the food is absolutely bursting with flavor. Every dish offers a delicious variety of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine — from tender pernil to perfectly seasoned arroz con gandules and trifongo each bite delivers comfort and tradition. You can tell a lot of care goes into every plate and everyone is friendly and efficient. This spot is a hidden gem for anyone craving bold flavors in a laid-back setting. Highly recommend for any type of night.

A recommendation that went above the hype. I came to dine here with my parents and they are VERY critical of Puerto Rican food as natives. With each bite of the fritura we tried: alcapurrias, sorrullitos with mayoketchup, and relleno de papa my family and I were immersed back into the pueblos in Puerto Rico. They liked the food so much they said they would come back and that is saying something. Also, when you come in the coqui sounds go off. This place is a must eat at! The pasteles are awarding winning and we think they are good as people who make pasteles every Christmas. The Tripleta tastes better than the ones I have had in PR honestly.

Great service. Delicious meal. I had baccalietos. Delicious. So so good. Parcha. So thick and good. I had the mofongo too. Steak. Perfectly seasoned. Update we went back again today. 100 degrees in NYC. Im not cookin but The Freakin Rican is. Soooo comfortable ac on and tne mofongo was soooo good. Im gonna dream about it tonight.

A Taste of Home in NYC: The Freakin Rican Delivers! On our recent visit to NYC from New Hampshire, my daughters and I made it a point to stop at The Freakin Rican—and wow, am I glad we did! From the moment we walked in and heard the cheerful coquí frog chime, we knew we were somewhere special. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with just the right touch of Puerto Rican flair. Now, let’s talk about the food. Every dish felt like a love letter to the island. We tried the mofongo (perfection!), arroz con gandules, pasteles, and plátanos maduros. Each bite tasted just like home—rich, flavorful, and comforting. The pasteles were such a hit that I couldn’t leave without buying a dozen frozen ones to share with family and friends back in New Hampshire. If you’re craving authentic Puerto Rican comfort food in the heart of NYC, The Freakin Rican is a must-visit. We left with full bellies, happy hearts, and plans to come back on our next trip. Highly recommend!

Walking in you immediate hear the coqui and the salsa in the background. Makes you feel right at home. The aromas made me excited for the food. Ordered jugó de parcha, sorullos con mayo ketchup, red snapped dish and the unforgettable tres leches. Best authentic Puertorrican food in the area!

I went here for lunch and enjoyed the portions for the lunch special price. I went again for dinner and the food was solid overall but I found the meat to be a little dry both visits. There is a nice dining room but it can be a challenge as the music is turned up very loudly and there is a bird noise, also loud, which sounds every time the front door opens - this gets old quickly, especially on top of the very loud music.

This is my opinion. I am Puerto Rican. I ordered arror con gandules and pernil the lunch special. A chicken soup. One bacalaito. And pasteles and small chicken soup which was not as I expected to be as well. The pasteles taste good there are pretty small for the price, expensive. The arror con gandules and pernil was ok something seems missing with the taste I've visited Margaritas, in the Bronx and they are less expensive and the taste is memorable unfortunately this meal isn't. For the $45 dollars I expected it to leave me wanting more. Again this is only my opinion maybe it was just that day. I wish them the best! I will revisit Margaritas 915 Avenue St John The Bronx, NY 10455 and Sofrito on 679 riverside dr. Enjoy everyone not every place is for everyone. Hope you do enjoy our Puerto Rican food no matter where you go!😊

Came with a group of nine, and for a small 30-seat spot the staff handled it relatively well. Mateo was clearly juggling a lot but kept things moving smoothly and fixed my inexplicably burnt grilled chicken right away. The arroz con gandules and beans were heavy on cumin, and that’s mostly what you tasted. The salmon was delicious, the Cubano with real pan sobao pressed in garlic butter was excellent, and the boneless chicharrones, calamari with guava BBQ, and house shakes were all hits. The flan and budín were exquisite and the perfect sweet finish. Overall, seasoning could be more balanced, but great service and effort made it a solid experience.

If you’re around give it a try. Everything is flavorful, the staff is nice. Update: We returned and I brought my mom. This time, The alcapurria was a little under done. When the masa cooks properly it stiffens up and gets dark due to being cooked. These were still creamy and light inside. The owner made it a point to inform me I was wrong. So I guess every other time I’ve had them they have been wrong. This is still an awesome place to eat. Staff is very welcoming and patient. The food is delicious. The trifongo was really really good. I would recommend. If you’re in the area stop in and hopefully you have a nice experience.

Too laid back and casual for a business. Some days open and others not. Owner is very ambitious and it's awesome but I didn't like to see his beauty line offered next to food. However, the flavor in this hard-to-get-in Queens-Puerto Rican food is so yummy. Also, I love getting their packaged sofrito so I don't have to make it myself...worth it! I get it by mail because, in person, it's hit or miss that they'll sell it to you if you get just one package.

On 12/15/25 I made an order for delivery of pasteles and alcaporrias. Normally we make them ourselves this year we decided to order. To date no order, and not one update! Extremely bad customer service. I paid $245.47 which is a lot of money not to have them delivered. My sister has ordered from them and recommended them. She is also upset. We live in Coram NY a total of 1 hour and 17 minutes away. Totally disgusted and will never order from here again. I am sure now I will get a response from the Freakin Rican and social media reviews are something that as a consumer I do use and will utilize

Today wasn't a great experience ! The regular server wasn't there and server we had was awful.The service wasn't as it usually is and the restaurant was basically empty . We weren't given the discount for paying cash and we addressed the server and she brushed it off . The owner walked in never even acknowledged us , at least say hi , hello or even a smile. I mean just a little common curtiousy goes a long way when in business . The next thing they started putting up chairs , closed the gate as we're still sitting there .Terrible service and experience. The other server always smiles and says welcome .He's the best , never had an issue with him , also when we asked for the 10% off coupon she said there were no more , she could have returned the coupon we gave her for next time .What a disaster !
