Opinions de Mikado Los Altos
This is a go to favourite sushi restaurant in the area. Consistently excellent common nigiri like salmon and tuna and halibut and the rolls are very good. Nice, prompt service.
We love going to this place. The food and the service are great. The only thing I would change is perhaps update the decor, it looks a bit like a 70's revival. Nevertheless it's our go to place for good sushi and sashimi.
Good food and good service. The kids menu is way too much food for any child short of a ravenously hungry teen. I ordered chicken by mistake and was very pleased with the results. Sesame seeds on grilled chicken are delicious.
Food was fantastic, plating really artistic- maybe a newer chef? Servers attentive and everyone to the busboys were polite. Because of that highest level, the 3 hostesses ... ladies, you are what customers first see. Drop the stoic wall and smile, engage and invite customers in.
I have been going there for over a year, super great place, never had an issue. The hot sake is wonderful. The sushi rocks as well.
This place serves fresh and generous portions of fixed menu sushi and sashimi. If you are looking for a reasonably priced Japanese food in the otherwise uber expensive Los Altos downtown area and don't care about fancy ambience , this is it.
Relaxed local sushi spot, with generously sized private booths in a pretty area of town. I've gone here for a dozen years - friendly good service. Delicious sushi - not the fanciest, but excellent quality/value.
We decided to try this restaurant after taking a stroll It's lovely place with calm ambience and of course with nice meals worth place to try
I've been to this restaurant upwards of 6 times and I can confidently say that the food is positively delicious! There are food options for nearly anyone and if you don't like sushi, then you can always order something like Chicken Yakisoba which is amazing. Sadly for those who are gluten-free, this restaurant is a no-go.
I’d rate this place 4.5 stars. I ordered the sushi lover bento box ($27) which comes with miso soup, salad, a sushi roll (6 pieces - I had tuna), two pieces of nigiri (I had hamachi), and five pieces of mixed sashimi (two salmon, one tuna, one hamachi, and one more I’m not sure of). There are several options for the salad, roll, nigiri, and sashimi, which was nice! It was overall excellent and filling though the tuna roll I had wasn’t as good as the other items in the set. I also ordered a large bottle of Sapporo beer ($10) and two pieces of tamago for “dessert” ($5) that were very good. I’d definitely come back. The fish were good quality and flavorful, and the miso soup and house salad were great. The service was also impeccable and attentive - high marks for that as well!
We are regulars here. We like the bento boxes and the yakisoba. It’s our favorite little neighborhood gem. It’s not fancy, just solid Japanese food and good service.
Such a great place. Big menu, great food, and the service was fast and friendly. There was plenty of room for a high chair, and the staff were very sweet to our baby. It's hard to judge a place's family-friendliness before you've been, but the Mikado is that without being kid-centric.
During Covid I ordered sushi from Mikado several times and the food was consistently fresh and of the highest quality. Our family favorites are the white tuna tataki roll, the jungle roll, and the simple and fresh Alaska roll. I ordered this evening again and after our delicious meal, which included all of the above plus some delicious Miso soup, I needed to write this review. I can highly recommend Mikado for great sushi and fast, friendly service too.
We did take out. Very good service and the sushi was delicious
I had the bento box at Mikado in downtown Los Altos and it was excellent. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and very flavorful. The portions were generous and well balanced, making it a perfect lunch. Friendly service and a cozy atmosphere — I’ll definitely be back!
A few super authentic Japanese Restaurants in the Bay Area. Main Chef Eric is experienced 20+ years. You can ask his Omakase (Chef Choice). Once you taste Mikado’s super fresh Sushi and Sashimi, it is really hard to find the satisfaction from other places. Their Kitchen Items (grilled items, tempura, and Udon) also absolutely good.
An amazing experience! They have a vast amount of options to choose from for your sushi & combos (some very great fully vegetarian options as well!). The price is also great. They have rooms in the back that are a bit more traditional where you take your shoes off. Loved that :) It was my mom’s birthday and they created the absolute cutest orange display. We couldn’t get enough of it! Plus, they had excellent service that was kind and attentive. I highly recommend Mikado!
An excellent place for Japanese food in Los Altos. We started with the Seaweed Salad and Shitake Salad. Both were tasty. Then moved onto a California Roll, Spider Roll, and some nigiri sushi (Tomago, Saba, Sake, Himachi, and Moguro). The service was attentive. The decors modern Japanese. The restaurant supports the community by posting local events in their window. Bike parking is not that close at their front door on Main street. They also have a backdoor on San Antonio.
Fantastic dining experience. Great staff all very friendly. Food was fresh and came out fast I loved it
We had a nice lunch for dad's birthday. We got lucky for nearby street parking, I believe there is more parking in the back. We were greeted and seated promptly. Tea, water and hot sake ordered. We chose a bento combo: gyoza, California rolls, tempura; came with miso soup and salad. We chose a few sushi rolls to share: Caterpillar (avocado and eel), California Crunch roll, Under the sea roll (yellow tail, tuna, salmon, unagi and tobiko), bubble bubble roll (baked California roll with scallop). It was pretty tasty. Service was nice.
Wonderful restaurant! The staff were very helpful and friendly. The California roll here was one of the best I've ever had. Very nice place for lunch or dinner.
This is our favorite Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area, the food is delicious and the staff is always super friendly and even loves our dogs. I think it is the best Japanese restaurant on the Peninsula, their chicken teriyaki in the bento boxes is absolutely delicious, and made with breast meat. They also allow dogs on the patio which is the cherry on top for us.
One of my favorite Bay Area sushi places! So many rolls to choose from as well as lunch specials and traditional Japanese classics! I would recommend this to any sushi lover around!

Classy little sushi joint with friendly staff. Simple and elegant, you just feel good eating here. The sushi is fantastic and prices are reasonable. Great place to pop by for a quiet Sunday dinner with family or friends. Their salmon skin handroll is one of my personal favorites, and goes well side by side with anything. I've been stopping by here once in a while for a few years now, and every time I go I think "why don't I come more often?" You will love it.
Delicious food, great service, and a nice casual atmosphere. We had the Gentleman’s Choice sushi plate and the salmon teriyaki— both were excellent and arrived extremely quickly. Absolutely would dine there again.
Absolutely love Mikado! It's hands down my favorite sushi spot in the Bay Area. The sushi rolls are consistently delicious, with the New Mexican and Mango Alaskan being my personal favorites—perfectly fresh and full of flavor. The service is incredibly quick, and the restaurant is always spotless. The servers are friendly and welcoming every single time. Never a miss here, highly recommend!

I had the Bento Box with salmon, spicy tuna roll and the gyoza. The gyoza [3 pieces] were small and very dry. The salmon and spicy tuna roll were delicious. The Miso Soup was Luke warm as was the green tea, but service was very good.
We really enjoyed our dinner at Mikado. The dinner was very good, and the outdoor seating made us feel safe. The tempura was excellent - lightly fried and not greasy at all. There wasn't anything wrong at all. I gave it 4 stars because I didn't walk away with the urge of coming back again soon. But I do recommend Mikado.
6/3/2025 Mikado 161 Main St. Los Altos, CA 94022 I was walking and exploring DT Los Altos on an early Tuesday evening and stumbled on this somewhat hidden place (obscured by vegetation). I am more of a Bento Box and Entree over sushi guy and they had a strong menu of these selections. Parking in the surrounding city lots was ample but gets tight during high lunch and dinner times. It's a long and narrow clean contemporary booth and sushi bar setup. I was seated promptly and ordered the Calamari Tempura Dinner. The okay salad and above average Miso soup were brought promptly. The squid consisted of long tubes with a crunchy panko breading, no tentacles. This was very tender, indicating the cook knows not to overcook it and turn it into rubber. The accompanying tartar sauce was okay but I would prefer a spicy cocktail sauce. If you like long squid tubes, this place is for you, it's kind of unique. Service was good, obvious attention to detail and worth a repeat for other entrees.
Got the lunch bento box combo and udon combo. Overall, the food was pretty good: the fried pork was crispy, the seafood udon was yummy and had lots of veggies and had nice clear broth. The only negative was that the salmon in the salmon avocado/alaska roll was a bit fishy / not the most fresh.
Met 6 other friends on Sunday for some sushi. Tried the Bento Box w spicy tuna rolls and salmon. The food was fresh and our servers were gracious and kind. The interior wood a serious paint job specially the bathroom door.
Wow, a surprisingly good quality Japanese restaurant tucked away on a main street. Lovely waitresses, private and intimate setting. Beef teriyaki was tender, dumplings tasted homemade, rice had a nice consistency. Fresh sushi and ample portions. Nice bits of pickled radish sides and succulent orange slice. This feels like an all around reliable and consistently good place that draws loyal customers back.
I ordered delivery twice from Mikado this week because the first time was excellent. 1st photo was my first time ordering delivery earlier this week. I got the salmon and seared salmon nigiri, Boston roll, and Alaskan Mango roll. The fish was really fresh and the salmon tasted really good, which I didn't expect because the ones I usually have were tasteless unless I order from the $$$$ places. The Alaskan Mango roll was fantastic. It's not mango season anymore but you can just tell how good the mango was from looking at the color of it. 2nd photo was my second time ordering delivery later this week because it was such a good experience the first time. I ordered the same thing except I didn't get the Boston roll this time because I want more nigiri. The salmon and seared salmon nigiri were the same - very good. However, I was a little disappointed as you can tell the Alaskan Mango roll looked completely different from the 1st photo. There's no mango sauce, no masago and no mayonnaise! And the mango didn't look or taste as good anymore because it's not ripened, or they used a different kind of mango..? It still tasted okay but that's not what I paid for.... One more thing is that the textures of the wasabi were different as well... Didn't capture the wasabi from the 1st order, but that one was more moist than the 2nd one. I'm not sure why, maybe the chef who made my first order wasn't there the day I ordered my 2nd order... Anyway, this is still a place I would recommend my friends to come. I just hope that whoever made the sushi can make sure they've made the same thing every time. I would give 5 stars for the first time and 3 star the 2nd time.
If you’re in the Los Altos area, Mikado is a solid Japanese spot to hit up for casual dinners with friends. They have a lot of classic Japanese fixings, from udon to donburis to sushi. Oh yea, they have a separate sushi menu that you can’t miss. If you’re feeling boring like I was, you can get the combination plate and get two mains with a side of gyoza, salad, and miso soup. Taste-wise, it wasn’t spectacular to be honest. The gyoza were deep-fried and lacking that golden brown color that gives fried things additional flavor. The chicken katsu I got was generous - I think they might have given me double portions - but really needed a lot of the soy-based dipping sauce (tonkatsu sauce) to get through.

The sushi here was pretty good – fresh enough and nicely presented. While it didn’t blow me away, the flavors were solid and satisfying. The environment is okay, nothing too special, but clean and comfortable enough for a casual meal. Overall, a decent spot if you’re craving sushi without expecting anything too fancy

We've been here a couple of times, and while Bento Boxes are good, last time I ordered Seafood Yakisoba and all the seafood it had was 1 prawn and 1 mussle. Please do better, we'd like to keep coming.
Sushi is delicious but front of house was rude when picking up order. Barely said hello, stared until I mentioned name for order, then abruptly ripped off order tag from bag and handed it over. Nothing else said. Basic cordiality would be nice!
Three stars because there are so many great sushi places in the area and this place isn’t one of them. Sushi wasn’t bad, but the fish on the nigiri was about 2/3 what I’d expect, the fish (especially the hamachi) was kinda dry. With so many better options nearby, I won’t be back.
We love the food at Mikado. However, they need to coordinate the timing of dishes coming out of the kitchen better. Tonight we visited with my in-laws. My mother-in- laws two dishes came out 20 minutes before my father-in-laws udon. She was eating well before the rest of us & he finished well afterwards. It was uncomfortable for all of us. Even if someone orders 2 appetizers or a sushi, the servers should clarify what should be served first & what should be served as a main course. Then, all main courses should be served close together.
Neighborhood sushi joint on Main Street. Open on a Sunday and they have outdoor seating. Service is friendly although a little slow to start. Sushi is decent, good fresh ingredients. Poké salad was wayyy overdressed (mostly sauce). Looks like they have a good takeout business.
The food was fresh, quality, and above average, and the decor was decent and aesthetic. Unfortunately, the entire experience was overshadowed by a severe fly issue. There were ‘countless’ flies around our table, cups, food dishes, and walls. The sheer number was distracting and frankly, annoying (as seen in the video). We strongly urge the owner to address this immediately, as it is a concern impacting both the dining atmosphere and hygiene standards.

Not good taste. Beed and steak are chewy. Fish is very small piece. No tempura and sushi in the bento box. NY steak tastes so cheap, like $6 per pound steak
The nigiri is ok with pretty fine quality fish. However the cooking left much to be desired. Oyako donburi was not half cooked eggs but rather a watery mess of soaked rice and a bit of cooked eggs with chicken. The habachi steak was ok but quite tasteless, with very mediocre sides. Would not go again.
Delivery from Uber Eats was great timing, food not much so... Chicken Teriyaki roll was dry, spicy tuna wasn't bad but asked for the Tuna not to be diced - it came diced, shrimp tempura roll was the saving grace I have to admit. Can't remember the other roll. At $40 for four rolls, it definitely wasn't worth it... Hope I was the outlier but won't be going back to find out.
Service is very hit or miss. Most of the time it’s fine. Today it was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Took 20min to get a glass of water for myself and they never even brought another one for my child. No utensils at all. Only 2 out of 5 dishes actually came out, which we had to eat with our hands. I finally gave up and left mid-meal, and came home to cook my kid some noodles. They need to spend less time taking and filling to-go orders and pay attention to the customers in the actual restaurant. Dumpster fire.
Review from 7.19.2014 I had bad fish here once. Lessons learned: 1. Never order/buy fish during the weekend (I thought this one was a myth, especially if it's a seafood restaurant) and 2. Make that first time the last time. In case you're wondering: I'm old enough to know myself well and I'm positive my sickness was from the Chirashi Sushi I ordered here. I thought I would leave it up to the chef to choose what's freshest; it seems I was woefully wrong. Other than that it was an OK experience: no outstanding (either bad or good) service, no note-worthy/very unpleasant decor or ambiance. 3rd lesson learned: take a look at a sushi place's menu and if you see ridiculous sounding items like "Sushi Pizza Roll" and "BBQ Roll" among other traditional sounding items, it means they're trying too hard and that inevitably means they'll fail. I know they failed me; after 2 weeks of symptoms, I'm feeling better but I wouldn't do it again.
I was a regular customer for years at this place n food was excellent. Today my family had a lunch (at 130$) and I am totally disappointed in a food, rice is a main ingredient in this cuisine, rice was terrible so we could not feel any taste in sushi, we will never come back to this place!
Very disappointing experience , considering the central location in downtown Los altos. None of the dishes we ordered tasted good. Worst miso soup ever tried in a Japanese restaurant, tasteless. I tried the seafood udon and the scarce pieces of seafood in there were not fresh, tasteless and tough like rubber. Far, far away from traditional Japanese cuisine. Frustrating!
