Opinions de Uncle Chien's Chinese and Thai Restaurant Lubbock
I used to visit this place when I was working on my bachelor's years ago. The place has changed owners since then and the service is not what it used to be but the food is still super delicious and it's the best Curry that I found in all of Lubbock.
I really love this place. It's just simple Chinese Takeout, with a few Thai items on the menu. Sometimes I like to go on about how good a particular restaurant is; I won't do that here. Uncle Chien's is good Chinese take out, eat here!
This is the "home cooked" chinese restaurant of Lubbock. Usually we drive through and take it home, but occasionally we do eat in. The food is good and not too americanized (if you're not chinese). I find Uncle Chien's is an all you can eat, but sold by the plate, every meal is more than I can eat in one seating. Overall it is an excellent place to eat.
Great service and it was just a drive thru order! The jalapeno chicken with lo mein is the bomb and the shrimp in the combination fried rice was very good too
Didn’t know it was here and have lived in the LBK for 10years! OrderED pad Thai, it was very good and actually had plenty of protein. TINY dining room and busy delivery drivers.
Convenient to work. Spiciest hot & sour soup in town, crave it. Also, love the Jalepeno Chicken and Kung Pau shrimp and Chicken. Take Out only. Call ahead to order.
I absolutely love the food, the atmosphere and the service 🖤 it's always my Go To when craving Chinese... y'all wouldn't know how great they are until you visit yourselves 😁 trust me ...
The food wasn't anything to die for however, the service was exceptional and felt very welcoming. Definitely going again to this smaller restaurant.
Great friendly service. Had groupon and everything went as it should. My cashew chicken was super filling and my girlfriends pad thai was delicious. Would return.
My first time there and it was BOMB , The lady with the glasses ( sorry I didnt catch her name , was super friendly and patient, steamed dumpling and rice noodles were so amazing ...not greasy, not cold ... it was amazing
I ordered ahead and the food was ready when i got there. The vegetables were cooked to perfection! Will definitely be visiting again.
Great food! It is so hard to find fresh cooked Chinese, everyone is buffet and it is terrible! Be aware that the restaurant is not real shiny, the food makes up for it.
The first place I called hung up on me and was super rude. I called here instead and the lady was so nice! Great customer service. 10/10 would recommend.
Absolute best meal I've had in a while!! Staff was so kind!
Best in Lubbock! Excellent Shrimp Fried Rice. Wish they had a traditional dessert, new favorite place 😋
You can always find the best food at the little "hole in the wall" places. This is definitely one of those places. Although the building wasn't the in best of conditions, the staff was very friendly and the food was excellent. I would reccomend this place to others The Phat Thai Noodles were delicious.
Small restaurant, great atmosphere, with friendly service food is outstanding. I don't get to eat here to often, but when I do it's always good. I like the pineapple chicken dinner myself, if your going down 34th Street pull in and get bite. You won't be disappointed.
Always great food. Cooked to order. These folks are really friendly and offer quick service. The quality of their food is excellent.
They have the friendliest service and the best fresh hot food made to order, and they make it fast, you may only wait like 10 minute's maybe 15, if even and the prices are great for all the food you get, I think everyone should try them
For and quick bite of really good, priced right, and ideal portions there is none better. It's very small and can seat no more than 14 to 20 people. Some order and take out.
first time there staff was friendly and courtesy had spicy beef with cashews my son had beef and fried rice everyone should give it a try
Great food!!!! This is some really good Chinese food and I never want to go anywhere else! Plus it's pretty reasonable! Service is usually not great tho!
Have been eating at this place for 20 years. The food is always made fresh and tastes awesome.the staff are very friendly and courteous.have never had an issue with food or people.they also deliver to a small area.would recommend to anyone wanting good and fresh Asian food.
Used groupon and saved some on the best meal around. Had the best fried noodles and mustard in town. Very nice and friendly service and am planning on our next order.
Only had the beef and shrimp rice. I would order that again. Have not tried anything else, imagine it's all good. Give the place a try!
The main dish was really good. Did not care for the fried rice they give with the main dish ... your better off ordering the white rice ... but I still give 5 stars cuz they had good service... fried rice 1 star though .
The service was friendly and our food came out fast. The food was fresh and yummy. Portion size was great and the price was less than when we order the same thing at other places. We will for sure be going back. Might even try the delivery service.
We love eating at Uncle Chien's! The staff is so friendly and always make you feel welcomed. The food is great and can always be customized to your liking and if you don't feel like getting out, the delivery lady is super sweet.
1/31/2020 7:13PM-7:57pm Food is amazing.🥰 Staff was friendly and helpful about questions and knowledgeable. 😁Lobby was very clean. 😓 No public restroom and small eat in area. Food is very fresh. Total gem place for Thai food. Worth visiting even for appetizers.😁 If placing to go orders their canned sodas are a $1.00, if dining in to get fountain drinks.
Really good food! Glad we found this restaurant. We had tried panda express and did not like that at all. We have been searching since we moved to Texas for a good Chinese restaurant and on a whim tried Uncle Chien's. We are very happy we did! Thank you for the great food!
They're super nice here. The Szechuan Chicken and Combination rice are both good. I've never had the food delivered, but the inside has always been very clean and medium busy in the evenings.
I personally highly recommend this place!! I ordered the Sesame Chicken with the fried rice and it was delicious. I also ordered the fried cheese won tons and they were perfect, nice and crispy and I loved how thin they were. Definitely will be going back!
Great food, excellent service, but located in a very small older building. Don’t let that stop you from ordering to go. Seriously delicious Chinese and Thai food!
This is my go-to for good chinese in Lubbock. Their cheese won-tons are perfect. I also got a beef egg roll, general tso chicken, lo mein noodles, and broccoli beef. All the food was exactly what I wanted. I love that they have half portions so that I can try several menu items when getting take-out. I've heard they also have groupons that makes the price even more reasonable. I didn't feel like it was too expensive when I went, but I am going to try the groupon next time.
Great spot for delicious Asian food , only downside wish they were open 7 days a week lol
I love this place! They don't have chicken teriyaki anymore; however, the sauteed chicken is a good substitute. I order by phone and drive right over and my order is ready! I've had them deliver a few times too and that's super convenient. Fast, friendly service and great food! Fantastic combo!
I had bought a coupon from Groupon for this place and am so blessed that I did. The food was served so fresh and hot. I absolutely loved my Hawaiian chicken plate and my parents loved their Taos chicken while my grandmother loved her broccoli beef. The fried rice was fabulous and all the veggies so crisp and fresh. I will definitely go back. Thank you for the great food and service.
It's a lil' hole in the wall restaurant. Excellent food, great service. I walked in, made my take-out order, and within 5 minutes was leaving with fresh, delicious smelling food.
Excellent main dishes. Friendly staff and great dumplings. Dumplings and egg rolls a must buy.
The owner cooked our meal fresh as soon as we ordered. I had the Orange Chicken with a little spice, and my friend had MooGooGai Pan. She was most impressed with the Wonton Soup. Will definitely be back when I'm in town again!!!
Great little spot for fresh Chinese-Thai fusion dishes! Skip P. F. Chang's and support local restaurants! Everything is made to order, the restaurant was very clean and cozy, and the employees are absolute sweethearts! Small, and inconspicuous, this place really knows how to make flavorful and filling dishes and the table service was fantastic! Highly recommend this cozy restaurant and definitely give major kudos to the amazing cooks and servers!
Excellent restaurant! We got the 2 meat fried rice and the chicken noodles, they are both SO GOOD! The service is excellent, the price is so reasonable for the amount and quality of food, and overall this is my new favorite restaurant. 10/10! Thank you!
Delicious food made fresh. Crispy dumplings and spring rolls. The Hunan chicken or shrimp is spicy, saucy, and and full of veggies. My kids love the Lemon Chicken and my dad loves the combo fried rice. The restaurant is tiny but they have a drive through and delivery! So. Good.
I placed an order for delivery and the food was amazing. I tried the lo mein noodles and it was good and the chicken and vegetables tasted fresh and not cheap. We also had the fried rice and it was good as well! The staff was friendly and the delivery was across town but it still got to me quick.
1st time here today. My daughter n I loved it! Customer service was excellent! There is so much food for a decent price. Hot and sour soup extra spicy just the way we like. Chicken lo mein had tons of flavor.
Definitely not the most appetizing atmosphere, but the food was great and they used white meat chicken with the general tso’s which impressed me. Will order take out from here again.
Yummy food! We fed six of us so there was a wide variety of choices. We are from out of town but we will eat there again next time in town.
I hadn’t ordered from here for awhile because it’s a bit far from me. Ordered carry out lunch today and was reminded of why I need to do it more often! Delicious!
The place is not much to look at, but the food was very good. The service was prompt and polite. Nice fresh vegetables and good sauces.
I used to eat here all the time! I don't as much anymore since I don't work nearby, but I would if I did. Prices are very reasonable, food is prepared fresh, and the owners are very nice people.
I have been here several times. It was my Grandmothers favorite Chinese restaurant so we went all the time when she was alive. Its been a few years since she passed and I just went back. Great service, and food. I just tried the Hawaiian Chicken! It was great, although it is a little spicy and the menu online didn't state that so that but its okay! I do wish their fried rice sides that go with the meals would have some veggies or egg in it!
Food was excellent but the service was horrible. Bad attitude from girl with glasses, no smile with flat effect. Bad for customer service
The register lady was very friendly answered any questions we had about the entrees. The speed of service was excellent we only waited about 10 minutes. The portions were good, it would be nice if all the entrees included rice or soup because it's a separate charge for each like an a la carte. I had pepper chicken the downside was it was mostly broccoli and not much chicken but the flavor was really good! Husband had chicken lo mein I thought it had to much of a sweetness to it, I like a lo mein with the flavor of sesame oil tossed in the wok with the noodles. The fried rice didn't have any veggies or egg in it like most fried rice does at other restaurants. The dining area is small could use some revamping maybe add some Chinese Tai decor it's more like a carryout style I must say it was clean and the food smell was delicious! Overall it was good and I'd eat there again.
As far as the food it was good but the woman who took my order was extremely HATEFUL TO ME because I took back one that was not what we wanted , she was yelling at me , told me ishe would have to pay for that food , I'm sorry but if it's not what you ordered you should be able to get what you want and I did , thankyou to the cook who was sweet and pleasant but the cashier attendant , do something about angry bird attitude and nasty face !! Hateful people don't count !! Be nice be nice !! Never have gone back oh well . Sr 12/21
Food is good but price a little high for the portions. Convenient if your needing your fix.
Fast friendly service. Quality of the food is nothing to write home about but good enough if your hungry. Did forgot my rice on last order. Will probably order from here again.
seems like this place has been here forever they have good food service could be better prices are good although I would say they need to get a better option for drinks than canned drinks you would think most places have cups. I give it a 3 out of 5 just because it's not perfect but it's not bad it's definitely better than a lot of other ones here in town.
I travel a lot so I've tried alot Chinese and Thai places and overall the food is good but the eggs aren't all the way cooked they didn't clean out the shrimp and I believe that's it The onions are caramelized the rice's oddly amazing has a lot of flavor with no soy sauce needed The beef is cooked perfect and the shrimp was not cooked all the way and the price is ridiculously high.
Ordered the dinner special here (General Tso's with fried rice, stir fried vegetables, and spring roll) for delivery. Was informed that the minimum order was 15 bucks, so I also ordered a wonton soup and some steamed dumplings. Food was delivered very quickly. Portions were small, the General Tso's itself was so-so. The dumplings were great, but they come frozen in a bag so they're about the same no matter where you go. The wonton soup was terrible. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting for days. The wontons were so old that when I tried to pick one up with my spoon they'd just disintegrate and cloud up the soup. They also put soy sauce (and way too much of it) in the soup when you order it instead of letting you put how much you want in yourself. Will not be ordering from here again. Hong Kong and even Lin's blow this place out of the water.
Not up to it's usual quality. Food was luke warm. Wonton soup was super hot but had a funny taste. Chicken seemed different too. Just wasn't impressed
Good food but if you are looking for authentic Oriental food this is not the place. We ordered orange chicken and jalepeno chicken both with friend rice and two veggie egg rolls. Jalepeno chicken was very good 5⭐ for that. Orange chicken and egg rolls were definitely frozen stuff I could have probably bought at the store and made myself 1⭐. Fried rice was ok but no eggs or veggies what kind of fried rice doesn't have eggs and veggies 3⭐ Would still rather eat here and support a small business than a big chain
I just suffered through the worst Pad Thai I've ever had. It was bearable but terrible. I had 2 shrimp in the entire dish and it barely had any chicken at all. Delivery guy was nice though! I won't be getting food from this place again and you shouldn't either.
Had been a favorite location for more than 30 years. Not as good as it used to be. Fried rice had no vegetables at all in it. Prices are much higher, not as good of quality as in the past. Needs work in that area.
Staff is very nice but disappointed in the food. Ordered to go, mom ordered Kung pao chicken and only got like 5 pieces of chicken in it, and was expecting a little more food for what I paid for compared to the other Chinese places I’ve eaten and paid the same price for. The sweet n sour sauce also tastes like half of its water. Highly unlikely I’ll order again
I came here on May 14, 2021 and this place is nothing special. Their food is fine but I would say it isn’t really worth the money. I spent nearly $19 and the food is ok. The chicken still had cartilage on it and definitely was not worth $9 with it being soggy. The won ton soup is extremely salty and I could barely drink it. The only good part was their fried rice. I more than likely won’t be back here with the prices vs the actual quality of the food. Also the drive thru leading to a back alley way that could be hard for some drivers to get out of.
The service was pretty good, but I was the only one in the restaurant at the time. The food, however, was almost too salty to eat. I ordered Mongolian beef, and it had more broccoli in it than onions, and no peppers at all. All of it was so drowned in soy sauce that I didn't finish it. The side of fried rice was pretty decent though, and the fried eggrolls were cooked properly.
I really wanted to like this place. I got the Hawaiian chicken, came home and it was so soggy. It was sort of like general Tso but with a sweet sauce. Another dish we got was Mongolian beef. The beef was so chewy I could not eat it. The egg roll and egg drop soup were the only edible items.
It was okay food was kinda bland no flavor honestly but I mean portions were okay too made a mess with all the juices
I am not sure what the people were thinking when they posted “ wonderful place “ my guess is they do not know what Chinese Food should taste like. If you want AWFUL!!! Chinese food then definitely eat at this restaurant, especially if you want water soaked chicken, tasteless Lo- main , burn egg rolls. . Kristi
Awful. It was dirty. There were little grease stalactites hanging from the ceiling over the grill. The floor and wall under the grill was caked with old grease and filth. Chairs were gross. I got General Tsos chicken, but it didn't even closey resemble any I've ever had. The sauce was like a sweet and sour and had a clump of what looked like snot. It was supposed to be spicy, but was really bland. The veggies were overdone, dried out and had no sauce on them. We told a friend we'd try it, and we did. However, I will never eat there again.
I've tried getting food here 4 times. First time was at 7. Well, they close at 8 and stop taking orders at 7. Great to know. Next 3 times they've been closed or not answering the phone in the middle of the day, and just tried calling now a few times (3pm) and nothing. Will update this review if I ever get to taste the food.
I wish I could give it zero stars. Uncle chien does not own this place and is certainly not cooking here. The food was far from authentic or even close to resembling Chinese food. I got "lo mein" and it was spaghetti with some kind of bland, sweet sauce. The wontons and egg rolls were soggy and greasy, they didn't have sesame seeds and the "garlic chicken" didn't even have garlic. None of the food was even made with Asian sauces. Panda Express is 10 times better. I feel cheated out of my money! Change the name and the owner!!
Spent 40 minutes waiting for food after waiting 5 minutes in drive thru. Not a hello, or a how can I help you, all I got was a blank stare when she opened the drive thru window. I ordered blacken pepper chicken, chicken fried rice and two kids chicken fried rice, and won ton soup. Chicken was not good and soup was horrible.
When I got home and opened container the broth was black! I ordered chicken noodle soup. There was a jelly like clump on top. Tasted like soy sauce water. Will not return.
The fried rice is rice mixed with straight soy sauce, and the two entrees I tried tasted like they were also solely seasoned with soy. The restaurant was not clean and the service was less than ideal.
Decided to try this place for the first time, keeping local alive. Portions were really small. Only three bits of beef, on my beef and broccoli. And there was hair cooked into a piece of chicken on my sweet and sour chicken. Tried to call them, they already closed. Saved food to take back next day, for a refund. They refused the refund. But said they will remake the food. I don't want their food. I just want my money. I strongly advise that if you're thinking about about eating here, think about their policy on refunds and customer service. I hate to do this amid everything that's going on. But if it can save someone else from wasting money, it'll be worth it.
Hot & Sour soup was bland if not for the excessive spice - worst H&S soup I’ve ever had. Egg rolls OK, Orange Chicken (their most popular dis) was not good at all - worst I’ve ever had. Fried Rice was fairly tasteless, basically just white rice with a little soy and some meat thrown in, very bland - worst fried rice I’ve ever had. The food here was simply terrible when compared to a place like Panda Express.
The service was good, I had ordered chicken fried rice and the combination plate. They gave me too little of rice and way too much oil. The beef in the combination plate was discolored and old. Rice was over stemmed. Portion size was small on both trays, had to go get more food from somewhere else to get full. Very dissatisfied with the quality and quantity of the food.
We ordered three different entrees. Only one of them was edible. The Mongolian beef was rediculously salty. The Black pepper chicken had an odd color. It looked gray and unappetizing. The portions were smaller than I expected. The price however, was less than other Asian takeouts. We won't be coming back.
The staff was initially pleasant. We were sent the wrong order. They tried to tell us that orange sauce was identical to general tso sauce and argued with us over the phone. Their dumplings, when compared to the costco dumplings in our freezer, were identical. We were unable to even palate the food and went somewhere else instead and paid for lunch a second time that day.
This food was gross. The wonton soup was a strange, almost black color. It was very salty and terrible. The sweet and sour chicken was nothing more than a regular over fried chicken pieces in a bad batter. The chicken fried rice was okay, but half as much as I would expect to come in a serving for all the price. All egg rolls, I tried veggie, pork and beef, seemed store bought then deep fried. All portions are small, all flavors were not good. I won't be back.
We have always ordered from here and they always delivered to us. The fact that they delivered to us was one of the best things about them aside from the delicious food. Today we tried to order and they guy said we don't deliver out there. My husband said but you have been out here many times, the guy then replied well they should not have. Placed my husband on hold then returned with sorry we don't deliver to you. So I guess we will not be eating there anymore. Really unfortunate since we do spend quite a bit of money there. Bye bye uncle chens and I will not be suggesting you establishment to anymore of my friends.
Today is April 30, 2021 & I have NEVER eaten at this restaurant before. I am an older disabled person, although I am disabled I can still understand & communicate really well. Today I called this restaurant, at approx 5:15pm & a guy answered by the name of Oscar. When he answered, I asked him if they did delivery & he told me that they did. I explained to him that I am disabled & I have NEVER ordered from them before & I told him that I would need his help to place an order. His response & reply was that he refused to help me. As soon as he found out that I'd need help he started being rude speaking to me badly & when I told him that I am disabled he straight out told me that he would not help me at all & he told me to go to another restaurant because he is refusing to help me at all. He treated me like this even tho I very respectfully requested his help & was not rude to him. He spoke to me in a very rude way from the moment I asked for help from him & as soon as I told him that I was disabled he started yelling into the phone, at me. So I hung up on him & immediately left this review. This is terrible service & I'll never taste their food because behavior like this makes me gladly want to find another place to pay, to service me. He was rude, uncaring & mean & truly bad person & since they act like this it makes me wonder what actually is in their food any way Total Discusting
Ordered today and food was very cold. Twice the price. Portion size was cut in 1/2 of the 1/2 size plate I ordered. Soup was cold. Quality of food was also very poor. Not sure what is happening over there but I hope they turn it around.
This was the worst Thai food I’ve ever had in my life, and I’ve eaten Thai food all over the world for several years. The curry was horrible. It was not even a sauce. It was only curry powder and way too much. The restaurant first messed up my order with putting meat in it when I am a vegetarian and then once I drove all the way back there to get the right order, I could not even eat more than three bites of it because it was so disgusting. The Chinese food may be okay and maybe the Pad Thai, but I will never order from here again and would not recommend it to anyone. I don’t think more than one Asian person even works there. It is not authentic at all.
One star is an overstatement for the food we were delivered. We ordered orange chicken (that looked like my dogs wet food with a very unappetizing yellow color🤢), chicken teriyaki (that appeared undercooked), chicken chow mein (had about three noodles in the entire box and an OVERWHELMING amount of white cabbage), and cheese Rangoon’s. Every portion was extremely small and they even tried to make it look larger by placing tortilla chips in under the cheese ragoons... thoroughly disappointed with the service given here over the phone and with the food we received. Will never order from this establishment again and will never recommend this place to anyone.
The food is good, but it loses it's appeal when it's drowning in oil. I would say there was about an 1/8th of an inch of oil. Yuck! This is not the first time, my food has been greasy. I'll have to think about returning or not. If you like your food swimming in oil go for it.
Uncle Chen's used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants but it's gone through several changes of management in recent years and the most recent batch of Yahoo's running the place are inept at best. The last several visits have been less than stellar and on my last one it really took the cake. I walked in placed my order was told to sit down. never was asked for payment and then was subsequently ignored while multiple people came and went through the drive-thru. After about twenty minutes I left without anyone having further acknowledged my presence and will not be returning again. It makes me sad. This place used to be good
I was really disappointed with this restaurant. The combination lo mein was covered in a very oily sauce I'm not sure I've ever had before, and I think it was the same oil that covered what was supposed to be fried rice. The meat additions according to the menu weren't available. The vegetable egg rolls are really small spring rolls. The pork egg rolls (on the menu as beef) were the best thing we ordered and ate. I'm only in town temporarily, so they won't be missing my business.
Starting off by saying that the staff is polite. Everything about my experience was extremely disappointing. The portion size on my chicken was extremely small & the whole meal tasted like it had been cooked in the microwave. You’d get a higher quality meal at Panda Express. I can easily say i’ll never go here again.
I guess the food was okay, my family thought it was great., I didn't like it, nor did I like the price, no bathroom, no air conditioner, and I like my Chinese food with Chinese people cooking it
Ordered a small portion of beef and broccoli but received mostly onions and carrots with just a few pieces of meat. The fried rice and overall dish were pretty bland—lacked seasoning and flavor. Disappointed with the quality.
I have been a faithful customer since 2020. Food was amazing but within the last couple of times of ordering the food has gone down hill. There was a male cook back then and now I haven't seen him. Also a female person that took orders. Everything was amazing!!! Now, a woman is cooking and order taker is a young guy. A week ago I told my boyfriend that uncle Chien's was the best place. Made me ashamed for getting food there!!!! Missing part of the order and one of the items was the wrong food!!! Never had that happen before. Ordered again last night and flavor isn't there!!! I always eat all my rice when doing combo fried rice and I left 3/4 of it!!! Time to find a new place!!!!
They are AWFUL! Food was delivered and was disgusting. I ordered sesame chicken and it looked grey and the sauce looked unappetizing with a slimy look to it. The sweet and sour chicken were thin small pieces of chicken that was mostly breading. The fried rice was just brown rice and was not good either. I paid $18 for my meal and was not pleased. I tried to take it back and let them know it was not what I expected. I have to work 12 hours today and was lucky to get a lunch break to eat and I was sorely disappointed. The refused to give my money back because it had been picked at already. I will never come back here again and I do not reccomend this place to anyone.
