Opinions de Dos Alas Cubarican Cafe & Lounge Mammoth Lakes
First off, as part Cuban growing up with Cuban family in south Florida, I know not to expect the flavor I’ve come to adore so far from home, especially in a ski town in California. This place has blown me away. The food is the best I’ve had in general. Not just Spanish food, but all of it and I’ve traveled around the world for years. I ordered the sweet plantain and meat pie while my boyfriend got the Cuban sandwich with homemade hot sauce. The only words he was able to utter while coming up for air between bites was “never have I had a flavor combination dance across my mouth as ballerinas across a stage”. This is the best restaurant, hands down, and I give it a 10/5.
One of those amazing experiences on your road trip when everything comes together: food, vibe, location, incredible owner who you can see is dedicating herself 100% to make sure every guest leaves happy. The ranch setting so close to the town is amazing. Gracias Dos Alas! The space is small, that’s why try to get a reservation to secure your spot.
We showed up around 8:25 when they close at 9 and they had full seating, but happily sat us on the couch and bean bag chair to eat off the coffee table which was AWSOME! we got drinks and apps, and around 9 he asked for mains, we asked for the meat pies which they where out of. these where the whole reason for us coming here to eat. We where quite upset we didn't know when we sat down that some items where 86. we told our server had we known that we would have not stayed since they where they only reason we came. but he was very nice and lets just say he handled the situation. so we decided to stay and order anyway, and everything was AMAZING. We where so glad we stayed even though we didn't get the meat pies, all of our dishes where spectacular and they didn't rush us out. we will be back for sure, we'll just call ahead and have them save some pies next time.
An amazing restaurant. The food is insanely good, the views just as good, the vibe is awesome. Highly recommend the escabeche of shrimp and octopus for an appetizer. Then go for the Cuban sandwich or the Pinon and always Tostones on the side. These dishes will seriously blow your mind. We've eaten here every night during our spring break stay in Mammoth. What an incredible place. Love it!
So glad my husband found this place!! The owner is a gracious hostess and has established a warm and welcoming atmosphere! Now let’s talk about the food!! My husband loved his Lechón sandwich and I can’t believe I ate every last bite of the Piñón-Pastelón!! It had my two favorite foods, Picadillo and Maduros, wonderfully baked together in like a lasagna pie. We will definitely return the next time we are up here.
Outdoor picnic table seating where you are served! No cover, so go when it isn't crazy hot. The garlic pork was amazing. Perfectly cooked, not dry like a lot of people cook pork. Savory and juicy. Also had a Cubano there later and it was just as good. I imagine the ham is amazing as well stand alone because it was good in the sandwich. The bread was perfect for the rounding out of the sandwich and seemed something almost like a french crescent in flavor and fluffiness while still keeping firm and crisp. Also tried the cheese and agave sandwich and it was just as good. Perfect slight hint of sweet on an otherwise savory cheese crisped on the crescent like flavor bread. The vegetarian dishes were very interesting. Cassava (garlic and salty), black beans (typical plain), fried plantains (barest hint of sweet) and rice (plain brown or white). The bread pudding was good and I don't normally like bread pudding. Probably because it had a nice cinnamon, sweetened condensed milk and coconut flavor combined with the fact that it wasn't spongey. It was very much dense and solid. The only thing I didn't like much was the shrimp in a cup. But lots of other people were raving about it so I don't know. They had that overcooked shrimp flavor I don't like even though I'm not sure of the curing/cooking process. Overall loved the place.
TLDR; this is the best restaurant in Mammoth Lakes My wife and I went to Mammoth Lakes for our "babymoon" trip. We have a pretty restricted diet, both gluten free and vegan. Needless to say, it wasn't easy finding good food in town. There were a few places that catered to us (very few), and the food was only "meh". Our last night, we found Dos Alas. Thank god we did! This food not only catered well to our diets, but it was TOP NOTCH. This is easily the best food in Mammoth Lakes. Healthy, interesting, and most of all, absolutely delicious. Also, the location is jaw dropping. When I pulled up, I felt like I had stumbled upon a magical location. It felt surreal, nestled between the mountains in a beautiful meadow, with a few cabins for rent on the property. The inside was so well decorated, eclectic and colorful. To add to the wonder, the staff was so friendly and happy. This restaurant was enough to make us want to just live there. Cannot recommend enough. Don't even bother eating anywhere else, I guarantee other restaurants will disappoint in comparison. If you don't believe me, make this your first stop. If you feel compelled to try other places afterwards, it won't take but 1 or 2 stops before you're coming back, if you even bother trying.
Incredible food! We had the Cubano sandwich, Piñón-Pastelón (sweet plantain meat pie) and got a side of Cuban black beans. Our server took really good care of us and was so hospitable! Get the house-made hot sauce and put it on your Cubano if you can! The owner also stopped by to chat and was so kind. I wish I could give 10 stars for both the food and the service. The indoor dining was comfortable, clean, pretty, and had delightful spanish guitar music playing. If you didn’t look at the website before you go, it’s located in the building behind Sierra Meadows Ranch. Turn left into the parking lot a little before the Google maps point for the restaurant.
In a tiny building on the outskirts of Mammoth you will find one of the best restaurants in the area, Dos Alas. This place not only has the best views around, but also some of the most flavorful food. You must try the pickled shrimp and octopus, and order a side of garlic bread to go with it. The pinon and glazed ham are also top tier, but really you can't go wrong. The place gets crowded, so a reservation is a must.
I’m half Puerto Rican and to find a “CubaRican” restaurant here of all places warranted a try. And omg IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We got there after 8 (they close at 9) and they seated us outside and served us anyways despite the fact we got our food well after 9pm. The owner stood out and talked with us and didn’t rush us out. It was so good we ate there both nights do our stay. Eschebeche, yuca, Cubano sandwich, garlic pork, and piñon are out of this world 💯‼️ best view in mammoth for eating out and the people are super genuine and kind. The wait times vary…just go there with ample time and enjoy your family/friends with AMAZING Spanish foods. I’d give 10⭐️ if I could.
Absolutely delicious Puerto Rican and Cuban food in a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like coming home to your mom’s kitchen. We loved the cozy interior and lively music (the have live music on Wednesdays)— it really added to the authentic, joyful vibe. The views are beautiful, and the whole experience was made extra special by the amazing owner, Christy. She treated us like family, made fantastic food recommendations, and even gave little gifts to our kids before we left — such a thoughtful and generous gesture. Every dish was full of flavor and love. We highly recommend this hidden gem and will definitely be back the next time we’re in Mammoth Lakes!
Outstanding chicken skewers! Terrific service and really delicious mix of Cuban and Puerto Rican food.
We went to Dos Alas this past Saturday for a nice slow dinner after a long day of hiking. Great views, super friendly and engaging staff, reasonable prices, and fantastic food. Not much else to say. What's not to love! Highly recommend.
We loved this place! Love that they have vegetarian menus, and everything on it was delicious. Service was great - everyone was so friendly including the owner who came around. And the views and atmosphere were wonderful! Highly recommend!
This place deserves 5 stars. MAKE A RESERVATION. The food was top tier, really delicious and full of flavor. We started with the pickled shrimp and octopus, with a boiled egg on top, and accompanied with an order of the garlic bread (perfect for the pickled juices). Fantastic. For our mains, we had the Pinon (plantain & beef lasagna) and the Guava Glazed Ham, with a side of both rices and both beans. It was all unbelievable. Incredibly delicious. For the most part we had great service. We did have a 6:30 reservation, and as the night went on, the worse the service was. People waiting for menus, and then even longer to get an order in. It is during the off season, and clearly understaffed, so have patience. The table next to us ordered refills on their wine 3 times before they finally got it, and by that time it was the end of their dinner. Despite all of this, would definitely return again and again.
I’ll start by saying the food was INCREDIBLE! Everything we ordered was really well done. We got the platanos to start (they are a side dish) and it was crispy and great with their sauces. The owner makes a delicious hot sauce that went well on pretty much everything. I had the Cubano and the balanced sweet and savory of the meat really stood out to me. There was a great meat to bread ratio and the flavors of the sandwich really was authentically Cuban with its own unique twist. The restaurant itself reflected the vibrancy of Cuban culture and food. Lots of art, colorful walls, live music! We came in a little later and closer to closing and it was packed on a weekday at the time we came in. The only critique I have is that it was a little confusing to understand where to go to get seated but it’s kind of in the center of the restaurant. It took us a little longer to get seated and once we were seated we did not get helped right away. That being said, the waiters and waitresses were so busy with the amount of people there and once we were helped the service was great. I honestly think it is a reflection of how great the restaurant that it is this busy. Overall, incredible experience and will definitely be coming back next time I come through town!
Super cool & quirky spot. The food was unique and tasty and the servers were really attentive to food allergies and were very helpful in working around those. Would def recommend!
Cozy little place with a great casual vibe. The wait staff was very friendly. Food was good, I had the Pastelon and my wife had the Vegetarian plate which she really enjoyed. I would highly recommend the Coconut Bread Pudding for dessert.
Awesome experience. The food was very tasty, especially the fried plantains. What really sets this restaurant apart is the atmosphere. The restaurant is cozy and well decorated. It has a lovely buzzy vibe. There was a live jazz band singing Sinatra that was amazing. Outside was a fire pit and more music. Beautiful views of the mountain. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Anyone who doesn’t give this place a 5 star is totally off their rocker. This food quality is top notch, the price is heaven sent , and the staff is bubbling with attentiveness. We had Gabby for our server and she was the bomb. All of the food was quality and I can’t say not one thing negative about this experience. Keep it up y’all! Putting this on my saved locations on must places to eat. Hope to serve you at my place one day. Thank you.
Best restaurant in Mammoth. Love that they immediately ask if you need a vegetarian menu. Only one vegan entree but it’s absolutely delicious. They also have a vegan dessert. This spot is always a must while we’re in Mammoth.
Wow! As an executive chef I am hard to impress. This restaurant is a gem. The food is fresh and FANTASTIC, the service is excellent and the atmosphere….. unforgettable! Watching the sunset at Mammoth while listening to great music and eating fabulous food is a perfect way to enjoy the evening. A must visit if you are at Mammoth or within 100 miles!
Amazing! As Cubans living in Miami, we never expected to find such a delicious Cuban/Puerto Rican restaurant in Mammoth Lakes. We made reservations at 8:30 pm and were seated promptly. The food, the service and ambiance were excellent! You can tell the owner Christy loves what she does because she gave us great recommendations. We had the garlic bread, piñon with rice and habichuelas (red kidney beans), and pork with rice and black beans. Highly recommend checking it out, you won’t regret it.
This place has my favorite food in Mammoth and we went twice in one weekend. They seem to be reservation-only, but we were able to sneak in at one of their side tables without one. The seafood escabeche and piñon were amazing. Highly recommend. The service was pretty slow the days we went—it seems they are low on staff, so budget extra time if you come here. Also, the Guava Cider is dangerously good!
Good for you, you found me! They call that a win-win 🤟 Remember the last time you wished you could be in two places at the same time? Score! So you're in Mammoth Lakes for skiing or hiking, but the Caribbean Islands and their culture are calling you…big time? Especially their food! And you say to yourself, "No way Mammoth has any decent fried tostones, Maduros, sweet plantains, yuca al Mojo in garlic sauce, rice with red or black beans, pork and steak, or that infamous 'Cubano sando', coconut bread pudding, or best of all…that sweet and silky Flan, just no way" You'd be sooo, so wrong…follow me! Just walk through that inconspicuous door, and you'll immediately be blown away… And transported…(you pick your island) The colors, the sound, (as in live music), the aromas, the energy, and all the conversation and laughter around you. That's what good food does, it excites and even elevates you while you create 'core memories' with your loved-ones joining you, and in here…they'll be darn good memories for sure! Loud and colorful ones even!! The flavors are incredible, the building and its history will take you away, the menu is Cuban/Puerto Rican, and so, so traditional, (your own tia' would approve), the recipes go back generations, the service…just like family is joining you for dinner. And how about that location huh...and that one of a kind view! Seating is available inside and outside…It is Mammoth right?! My daughter and I came here 3 times during our stay. Our servers ultimately called us by name, and we were even introduced to the owners. Just lovely! My money is on you doing the same thing! Highly recommend this very special and unique establishment!
Amazing food, hidden location, fast and friendly service. They are very popular, I recommend making a reservation prior to arrival. Such a hidden gem, I never expected to find island food in Mammoth. Thank you, we will be back. We had the picadillo, Lechon, & the Cuban,
Dos Alas is an amazing addition to Mammoth! I am from Los Angeles and we have great food in LA, but this restaurant is definitely something that would fit right in and be extremely popular if it were in Los Angeles. The food and the vibe are just perfect. I love that it is a fusion of Puerto Rican and Cuban cuisine as well - kudos to Cristi, the owner, since her restaurant and food demonstrate how much passion and love she has for the two cuisines. The restaurant's interior is well decorated and well thought out, but due to COVID, only outdoor dining is available; however, the outdoor dining area is also great! While enjoying the amazing views of Mammoth, you get to eat delicious plates of food and great drinks. Tips: It is a bit windy, so I do recommend a jacket if you're coming closer to dinner. It is also located at the Sierra Meadows Ranch, so look for that and you'll find Dos Alas. Sierra Meadows Ranch seems to have really cute lodging, so if you have friends who want to come visit, I would probably check out their lodging (they also have horses in the back I think). I had the Piñón, which is essentially a Puerto Rican lasagna (instead of lasagna noodles, sweet plantains are used). It came with a side of beans (you can choose red or black) and rice (white or brown). It was a big portion, but it was so good that I cleaned up the whole plate. I'm only 5'0, so that is saying something! I don't even know how she procures plantains in Mammoth, but it shows how much work she puts into making sure her dishes come out right; Cristi doesn't cut corners. I also tried the red wine sangria and it is yummy! For dessert, I split the manchego and guava grilled cheese with my boyfriend. The outdoor seating is great - if you're not too hungry, you can sit at the lounge chairs and order a drink and watch the beautiful sunset. We saw a couple of people sitting at the lounge chairs ordering beers. This restaurant is also a great spot for families, date nights, and dinner with friends! If you want something authentic and a restaurant vibe that is different from the rest of Mammoth, this is the place to go!
DELICIOUS, high quality meal. Food highlight of our mammoth trip - definitely would visit again. Amazing hippie vibe ambiance inside with good music and nice outdoor seating as well. When gets busy servers stretched thin - but didn’t bother us and is common in small mountain town. Owner / staff super nice. Highly recommend!
Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Overall: This is a hidden gem in Mammoth that one must visit. You will not be disappointed. The extended review... Food: Pinon/Pastelon - 5/5 - I've only had this at one other place in San Francisco and this one was just as delicious. Who can say no to plantains and meat combined together? Tostones - 4/5 - A good yummy treat to have as you wait for your food. Deep fried goodness. Tembleque - 5/5 - Since I love the Hawaiian version of this (Haupia) this was a slam dunk for me. A refreshing and tasty coconut pudding. Service: 5/5 - Both the server (I believe her name was Carina) and the owner were lovely people. They were so personable and were awesome at giving suggestions on the menu selections. Ambiance: 5/5 - You would never know this would have existed because it's in a remote location and it's sort of hidden away from the main streets of the city.
This place is amazing! By far the best food I have eaten in mammoth lakes! They have a full vegetarian menu in addition to their meat based menu. Many of the items on the vegetarian menu can be made vegan. The owner and her staff are very aware of full vegan versus vegetarian versus pescatarian and have options for each. The personalized service and setting is like going home for a home cooked meal that you have been missing.
Best restaurant in Mammoth and Sandwich Cubano! I am from Puerto Rico with a Cuban family as well, and this restaurant definitely embraces the fusion of both cuisines amazingly. For starters, we ate the shrimp escabeche and yuca al mojo. They both are very authentic and flavorful, especially the escabeche and mojo sauce. Then, we split the piñón (sweet Plantain and meat pie) and the Cuban sandwich. Both are divine, however, I strongly suggest the Cubano. The ham has an exquisite guava twist, that simply it is the best Cuban sandwich ever. We even went back to order another round of Cubanos before hitting the road back to LA. Complimentary to the dishes, Puerto Rican girl boss Cristi, is really charming, passionate, accommodating, and loving. She makes you feel at home with her loving personality and her passion for food. I can't wait to go back! PS: Aside from the delicious plates, you can enjoy the amazing views of Mammoth. My advice, go to watch the beautiful sunset.

My family and I went here on a Saturday night. Party of 6. Ordered beers, wine, sangria and fried plantain things (I forget the name). We had various dishes. The food, service and vibe were outstanding! We will be back!!
Phenomenal food and excellent service. We moved to CA from SoFLA more than a decade ago and have been searching for good cuban food ever since. We finally found it at Dos Alas. It's a culinary hug nestled in Mammoth Lakes. The mojo marinated pork is spot on, the escabeche is delightful, and the portions are large. The sangrias are also refreshing as well balanced. They are busy (be smarter than us and get a reservation) and so very accommodating to customers. All of the staff were so kind and made everyone feel welcome. Dos Alas made the trip!
Super cool & quirky spot. The food was unique and tasty and the servers were really attentive to food allergies and were very helpful in working around those. Would def recommend!

4.5 stars. Great little restaurant in Mammoth that gets busy, so we highly recommend reservations. It can be a little cramped so just be prepared to squeeze through tables. Their menu is overall delicious. We tried a bunch of things, but I'm sure the stuff we didn't try is also good. We started out with a carafe of Sangria. The Sangria is definitely one of the best I've ever had (and I love Sangria). We liked it so much, we got another carafe to end dinner with. Then came the Spanish potato and egg pie. Yum or delicious is not enough to describe this pie - hot, fried, perfectly seasoned...it was just the thing we needed on a cold night and an entire day of driving. I absolutely recommend this! This was followed by the 3 piece skewers (pork much better than the chicken), the crispy plantains (an absolute delight to eat, particularly with the garlic sauce and the sweet sauce they came with), the fried plantains (not really my style but they were also good), and the pickled chicken. The pickled chicken was disappointing. It wasn't as cooked as we would've liked it. The pickled liquid and onion with olives were very yummy. So, we ended up having that, rather than the chicken pieces. For the main, I got the manchego cheese and guava jelly sandwich because it was different and I wanted to try it. It had an option of adding ham. I did. Don't do it. The ham wasn't as crispy as I would've liked and it made the whole sandwich very salty. Without the ham, the sandwich was very yummy! Definitely on the sweeter side but totally worth it. I highly recommend it. The beef stew and the meat pie basically have the stew which is a highlight of the meal. Whichever one you take, you win! The bean soup accompanying them was also delicious. Again, I highly recommend it. This was our best dining experience in Mammoth. The food is worth the wait and pricing. An absolute must-check-out when you come here. P.S. the parking lot is the first left before the restaurant so please don't drive all the way to the restaurant building as you will be on a dirt road. The servers are nice but there could be a language barrier. The pricing is on the higher side.
Long wait time so make sure you have a reservation. They close the kitchen at 9pm so you can always come back later. The food is good, except for the grilled chicken. It's very dry and not much flavor. Overall good experience and I would recommend!
The sangrias are also refreshing as well balanced. They are busy (be smarter than us and get a reservation) and so very accommodating to customers. All of the staff were so kind and made everyone feel welcome. Dos Alas made the trip!
My husband and I shared the pinion (we're light eaters) and it was very good. It was like a lasagna, but made with plantains instead of lasagne noodles. We also shared a chicken skewer, but neither of us cared for the spices and didn't finish it. The owner was very helpful in explaining the dishes, and the view overlooking the meadow and mountains was beautiful. We even saw a few deer, which was a treat.
I love Cuban food and I was really looking forward to dining here. Pros: we were able to get a table of 8 even though we did not have a reservation. The servers were nice and quick. Garlic bread and fried plantains were great. Sangria was also very good. Beans and rice are good too. Cons: the chicken and pork skewers were very dry and seemed reheated. No sauces came with the skeweres either. Our entre came out before the appetizers. Cuban food is known for garlic and lemon sauce, so was surprised that there wasn't that option.
We picked the restaurant for its popularity and high praises by the reviewers. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Our food was definitely not done right. Our chicken skewers were very dry and tough. When we gave them a second chance by ordering the pork showers, it was again too lean and overcooked. The piñón (plantain and meat pie) was again not moist and soft. The plantain was starchy and tough, probably not ripe? probably in the oven for too long? To be fair, the side order of amarillo (fried yellow plantain) was nice! Soft and sweet as it should be. The server was apologetic as they were short handed, with a packed house. I don't blame them but yet, it will also not be fair to call the service great. Anticipating a crowd and putting in sufficient staffing is what we expect from a well managed restaurant, and we definitely didn't see that. Unfortunately our experience was not nice and it will be difficult to see us coming back to this place.
you pay for the ambiance. we came in right when they opened in the middle of the week and they asked if we had a reservation. it’s not listed clearly on the website or on google. the waitress recommended the garlic bread and cuban black beans but she pretty much forced us to get it. luckily it was good but she could have used a different sales approach to recommended it. my boyfriend ordered the picadillo. it was great. i ended up eating some of his. i ordered the camarónes en escabeche. i was so disappointed when i saw it. most escabeche has more than just olives and onion in it. after one of the waitresses saw that i wasn’t happy with the escabeche they gave me fried plantains on the house. when the plantains came, a different waitress came. i’m assuming the owner. the owner stated that the shrimp was the highest quality. for drinks we got the agave wine. very good with some plantains. after we were done the waitress straight up asked how much we wanna tip. most people say “it’s gonna ask you a question right here”. i said thank you for helping us and that i had a good experience despite the escabeche. and she ignored me. the menu is chaotic and has random sentences in Spanish that seem over the top.

Was treated awfully by the staff. Very dismissive to the point I didn’t feel comfortable being there anymore. I really suggest they learn how to treat patrons w special accommodations needs. Don’t recommend.
Horrible service (Cristi) and overcooked chicken and pork skewers that were hard as rock and dry as a bone. Thank God for the Puerto Rican beans that were actually delicious so we could dip the meat in the beans. Even the coconut bread pudding was dry! My wife tried to sweetly get Cristi's attention to come to our table when she was available and simply barked "can't you see my hands are full?" This is not a truck stop diner, which would have friendlier service BTW. To be fair, the manager did discount the bill but it's not enough for us to come back, especially because of the service. Cristi asking/telling us to add 20% for a tip after she took our cards? Spilling something off the next table and coming through the restaurant with a filthy mop? Our group of 6 were hungry from hiking and fishing all day so we were excited to try this place since it came highly recommended by our hotel and online. Our advice, stick to their basic entrees or go somewhere else...
Our waitress sounded like a disgruntled employee. Ex: We wanted refills on our water and when she was serving the other table next to us, my friend raised her hand to get her attention. Instead of saying “I’ll be right with you” she said “Can’t you see my hands are full!” She sent another waitress who brought us refills. At that time, the water waitress asked how our meal was. We told her our skewers were really dry and overcooked. She passed the message to our waitress. Our waitress came over and said “I understand you have a problem!” She took off the charge for 2 skewers ordered. She started clearing the table next to us making a lot of noise and evidently spilled something. Rather than cleaning up her spill with a clean towel; she brought out a dirty mop while we were eating our dessert and said, “Now I gotta be a janitor!” When she brought us the final bill, we gave her 3 credit cards and requested our bill be divided into 3 couples. She followed by saying, “Should I add 20 percent tip too?”
It has a rustic ambiance with Caribbean vibe. It's a resort town, and it's reflected in their pricing. Flavors are ok. Our pork skewer was dry. We have pickled shrimp and octopus; the flavor is all right, but it's kind of off putting with eggs and oil. Guava Glazed Ham was cooked very nicely; however it is way too sweet. Ground beef stew with rice was interesting; olives made the dish work. However, all the entrees are heavy on the rice and beans with a small portion of protein. The host seemed to be offended when we didn't want to take beans with us. It's just beans, and the Cuban Black Beans are just bland.
