Pretty good for a place that is walking distance from the Amtrak station. The boba wasn't great but the Bulgogi bowl was.

I love this place so much. Best fried chicken sandwich, affordable, and so cute inside. Family owned and they care about Rensselaer 💓

A good place to get a snack or some soup or a light comfort meal if you have at least an hour stopover at the Albany rensallier train station.

We searched for restaurants when the Amtrak train had a long stop at Albany and found Son of Egg a delicious surprise. The food was full of flavor with Korean style seasoning and the portion was huge.

10/10 spot to grab a bite during an Amtrak Layover and only a 5 min walk from the station. They were fast, staff was nice and the crispy chicken sandwich was fresh, actually crispy and soooo good. Son of Egg gives me a reason to actually be excited to have a layover in Albany now :)

The New location is pretty spacious and ambience looks great. Being a fan of the old location the only problem there was finding an easy parking. With a dedicated parking lot in the new location it’s much more convenient. Food is Great as usual!!!

Came here for breakfast while waiting on an Amtrak train. My bacon egg and cheese was so excellent I ordered the "son of egg" sandwich with kimchi on top. Excellent food and kind staff. Bathroom was clean. It's too bad I don't live in town or else this would be my go to for breakfast.

Great Korean food, made fresh to order. The customer service is top notch, with homey vibes also. They never disappoint with the food. I highly recommend one of the best in the capital region.

I have always loved the Son of Egg location in Albany, and was so excited when they opened this Rensselaer location! The new location is SO spacious and has a second floor with lots of room to have a meal with friends. I got the bulgogi bowl with stir-fried kimchi, and it was delicious as usual. The staff was super friendly, and the owners Dad made sure we were comfortable and had a nice visit.

ordered the vegan fried tofu sandwich and the rice set. Simple and tasty. Sandwich wasn’t mushy, and tofu was big and crisp. The rice one - for a couple more dollars - gets you some shredded cabbage and salad greens drizzled with a sweet gochujang sauce, and good portion of white rice. I really enjoyed the tofu, which was fried well (not super greasy + the batter was thin and crispy), and it wasn’t desperately trying to be mock chicken.

Great food as always - I loved the food at the Albany location. The new location is huge and has so much potential! I asked for a vegetarian version of the corn dog and they accommodated!

The bibimbap was pretty solid and the staff were helpful/friendly— but my favorite was the radish kimchi I took home to eat later 😍 it has great crunch and is deliciously spicy, a great addition to my weeknight dinners. I’ll be sad to finish it 🥲

My business TRI-CITY SWEEPERS held our 4th Annual Winter Party upstairs in the event room at SON OF EGG in Rensselaer NY ( across the river from downtown Albany ) The staff were very accommodating, & CHEF MIN prepared an amazing Korean feast for my work crew & associates. SOE worked with me to cater half the dishes vegan . The Vegan Chicken & Kimchee Pancakes were amazing . The carnivores were raving about the Bulgogi. The food was filling & flavorful & the bartender took great care of our party . I would definitely book another party for my business here in the future.

I was looking someplace new for a quick lunch. I asked my car (Grok AI) for a new place that was a walk-in, non fancy restaurant that was unique with good rating. Grok nailed it. Off street parking behind restaurant was easy to find. It was early 11:50am, so parking lot was empty. I was greeted by a beautiful young woman who was pleasant, smiling and extremely helpful. Also there was a new hire(first day), who was as a young man who seemed really excited to be working there. As I had not been there before I asked for suggestions. I was asked clarifying question first (ie: vegetarian, etc), which I really appreciated. I am diabetic, so she described the sauces clearly. I decided on the bulgogi rice bowl and an order of dumplings (Gyoza?). The food came up fast and was delicious. I was surprised and pleased that there was a dressed salad. The rice was a short grain, sticky and really good . Seating is not fancy, exactly as I wanted. I will definitely return and bring some friends next time. If everyone who works here is as pleasant and polite, they have a winning staff.

My partner and I stopped in after a train ride up from the city. I got the Bulgogi Bowl with the recommended Fried Kimchi, and he got the Crispy Chicken Bowl with a fried egg. Both were amazing, 5/5 taste, good portion sizes, and reasonably priced. We came at an odd time of day so the restaurant was quiet, but the ambiance was fine. We’ll have to come back in for one of the events.

Great spot! My husband and I know frequent here as regulars for the local game night that's hosted every Friday nights. Upstairs is a chill spot, plenty of table space, the downstairs is very cool, very much chill spot to grab some food and hang out! Food is super good; I've only had a couple things from their menu but the popcorn chicken is one of my fave go tos! Good parking in the back and nice spot to grab a quick bite to eat! Excited to gru other things on their menu!

Loved this place!!!! It’s super clean. The food is authentic Korean but also fusion. My favorite was the chicken katsu and bulgogi beef rice with egg. They also make authentic kimchi that you can buy and take home!! I was also pleasantly surprised to find they stock up on Korean drinks that I can’t find anywhere else in town. Highly recommend!!

Unassuming location with delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. A performance was going on in the upstairs and my wife and I were able to hear from our table downstairs what sounded like a gentleman performing a Spoken Word piece about his hatred for autistic children. A bit odd, but a great location with great food and a venue for local artists.

Counter service restaurant. Great food. Very good service. Kind of a storefront type place but the food is very good and freshly made. I guess it has some sort of comedy shows on the weekends. My guess is it is big with the college crowd. The bowls were excellent. Fresh ingredients. Authentic recipes

I work across the river for the government. I’m one of the few people that come to the office on Mondays. Let me tell you, the options for Monday lunch is incredibly limited. Finding a place open on a Monday is a goldmine. I found Son of Egg and come in about twice a week—but especially Mondays. I’ve tried a few things but I mostly get the crispy chicken bowl with a hash brown and some other little goodie. The bowl comes with shredded cabbage and a little salad on the side as well; I want to say it’s 1,000 Island dressing on them? In a different review someone said there was too much sauce on the chicken dishes but honestly I’d rather have more than less, you can always wipe some off with your fork. Common sense, easy fix. The dumplings are fried really well, they’re so crispy. The potato skewer is seasoned and fun. I’ve seen other reviews mention some various issues, but fortunately I’ve never seen them myself. I’ve also never been sick from SoE. I’d like to think when the owners get a negative review they’re working hard to correct it. The place is homey and inviting. Kid friendly. There is parking and wheelchair access in the back for those in need of it. For the colder months ahead I’d love to see scallion pancakes, a simple stew or soup, and of course a spicy Ramyeon (ramen) come to the menu. I’d happily buy it.

Food was good. But when we do a take-out, the restaurant normally put the plastic spoon and fork in the paper bag, don’t they?? We were in the train after taking the food out. And we were panic. There were no spoons…… OMG! And there was no cafeteria and didn’t give any service to eat in the train so we couldn’t find any cutlery ….. So how did we eat them? We just made our own paper spoons with the lunch box paper …. So annoyed!!!!! Bulgogi sandwich was good to eat …. but pork cutler with rice and salad with sauce…. and we asked there was Gochujang. They said yes. However, there wasn’t. Hmmmmmm Maybe to take out from this restaurant is not good idea. You guys have to double check! Food was good , though.

My stop at Son of Egg began with a delayed train at the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrack station, and never have I been so pleased to have something go wrong with travel. Expecting a long wait on top of 4 more hours of travel, I decided to look for food withing walking distance of the station, and Son of Egg came to the rescue. Stepped inside and met with imported treats/knickknacks, merch, some cooler cases with beverages and jars of housemade kimchi, and a sign indicating the 7pm free comedy show. Stepped up to the counter (laden with more random goodies for sale) and ordered from a notably friendly/helpful person at the counter. Started to get the sense I found treasure and was not wrong. I ordered the Vegan Chicken (seasoned fried tofu with fried kimchi and veggies over rice) and I picked up a jar of their signature kimchi. Everything was prepared well and memorably delicious. I'm not from the area, but I know where I'd be frequenting if I was, and will return here for sure if I find myself in the Albany-Rensselaer area again. The standout thing about this place, it's uniquely Son of Egg. They do their own thing with flavors/ingredients and I'm here for it. Highly recommended.

I’m an avid fan of supporting local businesses, particularly restaurants. Came in today to try the crispy chicken bowl. The chicken was fried well but the rest of the dish felt very cheap. It tasted simply like fried chicken topped with ketchup. The salad had a bit too much dressing making it hard to eat. It was over plain jasmine rice. Nothing ‘wrong’ but nothing special either. The cashier was also quite monotonous and could’ve had a smile, but that’s beside the point.

Really cute spot a short, nice walk away from the Amtrak station. I got the vegan tofu "chicken" sandwich and my wife got the popcorn chicken bowl with soy garlic sauce. We both enjoyed our food! We only wish the kimchi was a little spicier. The flavor was good, textures were pleasing, and the service and ambiance were really nice. Seems like a great community spot with room for events!

Can't agree with the rave reviews of this place, unfortunately. I visited this place on 8/12/24 in the early evening while stopping in Albany on my road trip to Houston. Bulgogi bowl was fine; not earth shattering, but good. Ice cream sandwich was really good. Counter service was pretty bad. Reasonable questions ("does this tea have caffeine?"; "does this have a fried egg in it?") were met with derision, though this could have been just how I perceived the transaction. For what it's worth, I tipped >40%, though I regret having done so in retrospect. I would order ahead or do take out.

The food was wonderful until I bit into a twist tie. I think one of the cooks, an older gentleman, was disgruntled. I bought a homeless meal ticket and he made a weird joke about me buying him something and I said no, said I don’t got it like that but unless you’re homeless and that ticket is for you, I won’t do that. Despite this, the atmosphere is decent and cashier was great, he didn’t seem like he’s new. Keep him. He’s great with people and clearly loves the food and the place.

A coworker recommended this local place, which inspired a couple of us in the office to give it a try for lunch. We ordered a crispy fried chicken + kimchi & popcorn chicken, both over rice. We also ordered a honeydew boba. The good: Both chicken dishes were fresh, crispy and tasty, even if the rice seemed like perhaps it had been made overnight and warmed up. Soy garlic sauce and thousand island dressing were both light and delicious. I would say that these dishes were decent value for money. The bad: - The shredded salad that came with the meal was not consistently chopped, and my coworker found chunks of lettuce ends in hers. - I paid a dollar extra for the kimchi, but was disappointed to find that they had made it with green cabbage instead of napa. It was hard and tasted more like a chutney/sauerkraut than traditional kimchi. I ended up throwing it out. This isn't the same kimchi that they are selling in the glass jars in their fridge, or at least I hope not! The worst: As someone has previously mentioned, I am now also in agreement that the boba "tea" was made from a powder or poured directly out of a pre-packaged can. The boba was hard, clumpy and completely inedible, and the tea itself had a very strange, floral aroma inconsistent to green tea, OR honeydew. For $7, it was an absolute rip-off and we had to throw it out. I called the restaurant to politely advise them of our experience, and was met with indifference - which was what ultimately prompted this review. I am all for supporting local business, perhaps today just wasn't their day 🤷‍♂️ **Update - The owner has reached out and we have been in communication. Thank you for your proactiveness, it is much appreciated :)

Really tried, because good things were said about Son of Egg by friends, but between the bland food, the odiferous emanations (perhaps a septic issue?), and the crumbling building; I can't bring myself to recommend it. Some restaurants are clearly born from a place of passion, a love of food and hosting. Son of Egg is no such restaurant

Food wasn’t fresh and seemed reheated (not to temperature) straight from the freezer. The tornado potato was bland and stale without adequate seasoning. Boba tea was clearly made from a ready made powder mix because I could feel the coarseness from the mix. Korean food it is not, more like korean inspired.

We Have been here many times before and NEVER again will we be back. We came in this afternoon and upon walking in the cashier is walking up to the bar stuffing her face with food. We ignored it said it was slow and she was just munching, now we’re standing at the counter placing our order and there young cook is as well stuffing his face with food. Which number one is a complete health code violation. We have him the benefit of the doubt and hoped he was going to wash his hands before starting to touch anything or even put on gloves. But NOPE nothing neither. We stood at the counter and watched him cook our food. He is chewing gum and with one hand he stretches the dam gum from his mouth and back in & the best part is after he does that he holds up our plate with rice on it and drags his dirty finger around the edge of the plate to show how nice the rice looks to his coworker cashier Named Olha. Once he does that I completely freak out and point out everything they just did and how it’s completely disgusting and asked for a refund. The cook hears me and spits out the gum and now grabs a pair of gloves and puts them on. This is by far the worst experience I’ve ever seen/ been through, not only as a customer but as a general manager in the food industry. I’d like very much for the owner to reach out and make this right. Including with the workers, didn’t catch the name of the cook but here’s a photo incase you ever devise to go in and he’s cooking be cautious.

Don’t ever ask for sauce on the side because you’ll end up with a puddle of sauce on your food instead. Then you call to let them know there’s no way you can eat your dinner (that’s spicy BBQ) and it took my calling multiple times to get my money back. Now this is the 3rd time my dinner has been messed up. Never again will I eat from there. Thanks but no thanks!
