My wife and I visited Marathon, Florida for the very first time. I researched the best restaurants in the area and found Castaway as a great place to try. We gave it a try and were so pleased with the service, food, and atmosphere 100% recommend to anyone! We decided to go back again two nights later because their menu was incredible!! The entire staff was friendly and service was the best!!
Just got in to marathon after all day on motorcycle and found this gem. We got there early, about 5, and the place was already packed inside. Since we didn't have reservation for inside, we could sit outside. It was cool out but the outdoor seating is walled in so it was not windy. We decided to sit at the bar, as there were a couple open seats. Justin was bartender and very good, he managed the crowd well and took our orders in a timely manner. The steamed shrimp appetizer was the best shrimp I've ever had. Hubby got clam chowder, and it was creamy and buttery and so delicious. We both had fish for our entree and they were amazing as well. Finished it all off with the coconut topped key lime pie, not the best I've had but was still good. I would suggest reservations if you want to sit indoors, there was a huge line and wait when we left. Definitely must try this place though, you won't be disappointed!
Castaways is a classic. We love the sushi and the crab queso (it’s huge!). Tonight I wasn’t feeling sushi so I ordered my usual plan B, the shrimp alfredo. A simple comfort dish done exceptionally well. I never have complaints here, it’s worth the hype and is always a must stop when we’re in town. I also highly recommend the cook your catch if looking for a place that does it well. Over the years I’ve eaten through just about this whole menu and have never had a bad meal, but seafood is done the best. Regardless of your entree choice, your meal should always be finished with the coconut cake!
If you’re in Marathon and craving fresh, flavorful sushi with a waterfront vibe, Castaway is the place to go! We stopped in for happy hour lunch and were blown away by how beautiful—and delicious—the sushi rolls were. The presentation alone is a work of art. We ordered the Danny Roll + Two Year Roll + Spicy Tuna Crunch + Island Roll & we had calamari + tuna nachos = yeah we couldn’t decide which one we wanted …. 🫣 Very large menu with LOTS of options! The atmosphere is laid-back, fun, and very “Florida Keys” in the best way! —🚙 Don’t let the entrance make you 2nd guess your decision to cast on in! Meal is 5 star review approved!! 🤌🏼
★★★★★ Castaway Waterfront Restaurant is an absolute gem! We stopped in for dinner and ended up having a very memorable evening. The menu has incredible variety—everything from fresh sushi and poke to steak, fish tacos, and even the option to bring in your own catch for them to cook in any of their signature styles. We were a little bummed they were out of lionfish that night, but everything we ordered was delicious anyway. The fish was super fresh, cocktails were spot-on, and portions were generous. The crab queso dip, lumpia, and tuna salad are a must. What really took the experience over the top was the outdoor seating right on the water. We timed it perfectly for sunset—the views were stunning—and while we were eating, a manatee came right up to the dock to drink from the freshwater spigot! There were three that kept swimming around; it felt like our own private wildlife show. Our server was fantastic: attentive without hovering, full of great recommendations, and clearly passionate about the food and the local ecosystem. Service was quick even thought the place was busy. Castaway checks every box: delicious food, creative menu, good drinks, unbeatable waterfront location, and that laid-back Keys vibe. We’ll be back next time we’re anywhere near the area—highly recommend grabbing a table outside and staying for the sunset (and hopefully the manatees!).
Had a wonderful relaxing dinner with friends. Quickly seated and even though the restaurant was super busy, our waiter took amazing care of us. I had sushi & the ahi poke bowl, that was absolutely delicious and so fresh. My friends enjoyed the Lobster enchiladas, Hogfish, coconut shrimp, conch fritters and a yummy seafood pasta I forgot the name of. Oh and of course, key lime pie.
Such a neat hidden gem of a seafood restaurant! We had sushi, the tuna Poké bowl and the fresh catch of the day! All of the food we had was amazing! Also if you go here you have to try the lobster queso dip! It is insanely delicious! If you are in need of a wonderful dinner out with the family or a great date night restaurant look no further Castaway Waterfront Restaurant is a must!
Staff was very accommodating and opened up the sushi bar a bit early for us to order from. Fun, quiet place tucked back on a canal waterway. Our server, Ariel, was friendly and patient - he did a great job!
Once we were settled in our booth, we immersed ourselves in the atmosphere. Jess, our server was great and we had some of the best sushi ever. Raw oysters, were pretty good too. Be careful if you have to get up and use the restroom as you will see what everybody ordered and it will make it very difficult to choose. ;>}
Great food! And the service was great too! The coconut key lime pie was a girl trip favorite! So good, you have to try it! It was cold when we visited but they have outdoor heaters where the bar is!
The best sushi I have ever had! The King of the Jungle roll is unbeatable. They blackened my son’s snapper and it was delicious. Our server, Morgan, is exceptional! This place was recommended by several locals, including our boat captain, and they were definitely not wrong.
Castaway is a popular destination for anyone traveling in the Keys. They offer a huge menu of seafood items and sushi rolls. They have a large draft selection and cocktails. We saw them on the Food Network advertising lionfish, and I had to try it. I ordered the lionfish sashimi and lionfish miso soup. The sashimi had little flavor, but the miso was prepared in a rich broth and tasted great. The coconut-crusted key lime pie is a must, too. The service was friendly, and I got to knock lionfish off my bucket list.
We ate there twice. For lunch and dinner. We ate on the dock and it was really nice by the water. Great atmosphere. Had the feel of a simple neighborhood gem of a restaurant. I’m from New England and have had lobster bisque all over the country and theirs was, by far, one of the best. A thicker texture, more puréed, with a unique flavor. Loved it. Friendly servers. Great cocktails. Restaurant is tucked away in a corner near a fishing canal. Enjoyed watching the fishermen and the pelicans wanting a few leftovers. Manatees nearby. Very reasonable prices, had prime rib the second time when we came back. Highly recommend!
This was a very pleasant experience. Started out with the King of the Jungle roll, featuring the evasive lion fish, outstanding. The spicy conch salad and the wahoo roll finished off an absolutely delicious meal. Highly recommend 👌
Food, service and atmosphere were awesome!! Our server even asked the chef to come out and answer some of our questions about fishing for lionfish! We even saw a manatee off the back deck! I appreciated being able to make a reservation.
Had dinner and came back two days later for lunch as I had to have the Mango chutney again with the delicious coconut shrimp. They have balanced sweetness with heat perfectly. We also had a great Maki Roll and Uni Nagiri with an Uni/Quail egg Sake Shot
The food was amazing, we came specifically for the sushi, and it did not disappoint! Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Our server, Leilane, was absolutely wonderful! friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Definitely ask to sit in her section if you can!
This is one of the best in the middle Keys. Their Hog fish is fantastic. The sushi is excellent as well. Don’t forget to visit the Manatee at the dock side which has been there my last two visits. It was a great experience for the whole family.
Everytime we have eaten here we have walked happy and talking about how awesome this place is. On extra cherry on top was talking to Brookfield Mike and our bartender Christine and picking their brain about living in a sailboat, a topic I have had a lifelong fascination with. We've been here many times throughput the last 10 years and Im thrilled to see it keeps getting better. Thanks to the hard working people that make this place an institution it as.🙌🙌🙌🙌
We visited with a large group a few days ago and it did not disappoint! Our waiter introduced a trainee and they were both very helpful and prompt. She caught on fast and the food was over the top! The drinks were stiff as well! Grab a t shirt at the gift shop across the street and watch the Manatees put on a show! DEFINITELY WILL be back! Thanks guys!
Absolutely delicious! We made last min reservations and were able to get a table outside on the water. We are big sushi fans and were impressed with the options and quality of the sushi rolls. It was one of our more expensive meals while visiting the keys, but well worth it. We ordered the "Spicy Mae roll", the "King of the jungle" roll, Island roll and the "Seven Seas" roll. Our friend enjoyed the oysters too! I could have ate their two nights in a row!
The food was delicious. Our server went above and beyond! Would love to go there again! Love the food options here!
The lionfish sushi presentation is worth the price of admission no matter what else you get, but everything we tried was delicious from the lionfish nigiri to the conch fritters and the snow crab rangoon.
My family and I ate here for the first time this afternoon. We had crab Rangoon for an appetizer and it was so good, the best I’ve had. Our meals were all delicious. We sat outside on the waterfront and were able to see two manatee while eating! Our waitress was also very responsive and kind.
Delicious food, crab queso dip, lobster enchiladas, salmon prepared mazalatán. Yummy! I wasn't crazy about my Thunderbolt Margarita. Lacked flavor. Adam was our server, he was terrific!
To die for!! A must go to if you haven’t been! Best ribs my 10 year olds have ever eaten! Best sushi ever and seafood! Amazing friendly staff! Great atmosphere! Dog friendly too! This is our favorite restaurant in Marathon! The drinks and beer are so good too! We’ll be back!
We got there at about 2pm and we needed to wait about 15 minutes for a table. We found some spots at the bar had a drink and by the time we were done, our table is ready. It was happy hour (1-4pm everyday). We got the Tunachos, spicy tuna dog, buffalo shrimp and the Lionfish roll (not part of happy hour). Everything was amazing! Fresh and yummy. Our favorite was the shrimp since they were large, juicy, and they took the tails off. Then it was the spicy tuna dog (yeah, so surprised how good it was!). But everything was great. Including the drinks. Between 2-3pm, it was half priced, including a really great cold sake - Bushido sake baby. What a great deal. I do a lot of these reviews, but I rarely leave anything about the servers by name, but Brian was the best server we have had. He was informative, he kept checking on our needs regularly, the food came out fast and hot, he brought us extra sauces and was nice enough to ask if we needed napkins and utensils depending on where we were staying. We’re coming back tomorrow before we leave.
Great place and amazing food. Yvonne service was out of this world. She did her best to meet our expectations. Must go and check it out yourself. And if You lucky there are manatees coming daily, why not to have five with one of this amaing see creatures. ..
Great atmosphere and professional server/host. Our server gave us some great opinions and we're glad she did. Excellent tuna nachos and lumping, Seven Seas sushi roll and Lobster/crab roll. We missed out on the lionfish, so we'll come earlier next time. Great desserts too (chocolate cake, coconut cake, cheesecake).
Try the king of the jungle sushi. Amazing. And the tuna nachos. Service was great also. We stopped in on a day on a rental boat. Very accessible by water or land.
Love this place, such a cool vibe! On the water with a walk around dock which is great for spotting manatee as we saw one while eating. So much character and truly a keys atmosphere! Plus the food was good. We went for happy hour and they have a wide variety of food specials and some discounted drinks too! As of 6.9.25. Happy hour is through the full restaurant and is from 1-4pm.
Great waterfront dining, great happy hour menu. Michelle was an awesome waitress she had a bunch of tables got to everyone quickly and accurately. We will definitely be back!
What a gem of a place! The food was SO good. The sushi and the tuna on the nachos were soooo fresh. I recommend eating outside, a cute manatee drank happily in the waterway next to us as we ate. So charming.
My wife & I enjoyed an excellent dining experience this past Sunday evening at Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Our server Brittany was friendly and welcoming. She was very knowledgeable and guided us through the extensive dinner menu. We ordered the lobster bisque and buff & blue oysters. Both were to die for. My wife ordered the "Gilligan's Cut" 12 oz sirloin steak. It came out perfectly cooked medium rare and she loved it! I ordered the "King of the Jungle" lionfish sushi roll. It was unique and delicious!!! I would order it again in a heartbeat! We shared a slice of Key Lime pie with toasted coconut for dessert that capped off a wonderfully evening at Castaway. We look forward to returning on our next trip to the Florida Keys.
This a MUST for lunch or dinner!!! The service was amazing, very attentive, food was excellent! I had the Tuna Tataki and my husband had the Crab Quesco for appetizers. For dinner I had Seafood Marbella it has shrimp, clam, Cobia and scallops in a vodka sauce and my husband had Lobster Enchiladas both were incredible! You can’t go wrong with anything you ordered. Looking forward to going back to have sushi before we leave Marathon this weekend!
This was our first time eating here, and we will definitely be back. They have a large menu with a lot of seafood and non-seafood options. We ordered calamari for an appetizer. The portion was large and it was very good! Husband had scallops which he said were cooked perfectly. I had two different sushi rolls, both of which were delicious. Our daughter was still able to order from the breakfast menu since it was before 2:00 PM, and she loved her pancakes. Before we left we stopped over at the gift shop and the lady behind the counter was so nice and talked to us the whole time we were looking around. Definitely recommend!
This was THE best restaurant we visited in Marathon. That's saying a lot because there is so much excellent fresh seafood and great views pretty much everywhere here. Sat with a group of eight our first night, and returned just the two of us to order at the bar a few nights later wanting it to be our last dinner in Marathon before heading north! King of the jungle, Snapper, Cobia, Hogfish were soooo good!!! Bartenders and wait staff EXCELLENT!!!!
The place is a bit run down BUT THAT IS THE CHARM OF IT. Food is good, well priced and quick considering they were changing from brunch to Happy Hour. Bar tendered outside could have used help but she, herself, was brilliant! We fly down to the keys to hit a handful of places to eat and this is one of them. $2 Happy Hour drafts, come on...
Great decor, fast and friendly service. Fresh seafood and sushi, fantastic happy hour 1-5 pm specials. Staff is wonderfully polite and accommodating. The food is top notch, good portion size and very inexpensive for the Florida Keys. The restaurant is waterfront with easy smaller boat access. Inside and outside bars, nice table seating and plenty of windows and sunshine. Tucked away off od the main highway with ample free parking. Nice gift ship on the property. Inside and outside (covered) dining. A great place to see Manatees! Friendly, inexpensive, and cheerful.
Hubby stated it was the best meal so far on this trip! Must try the golden tile! Rainbow sushi and tempura shrimp sushi were amazing. Toro and lionfish sushi were so good! We started with the conch fritters and they were very good! Not a bad bite in this dinner! Finished with a very tasty slice of key lime pie. Will definitely return if in the area!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely phenomenal lunch at Castaway in Marathon. The fresh fish was outstanding — the golden tile blackened was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. The fresh shrimp were excellent, and the lobster dip was easily one of the best we’ve had in the Keys. The service truly stood out as well. Michele was amazing — friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. You can tell she genuinely cares about her guests. If you’re in Marathon and want fresh seafood with great service, Castaway is a must-stop. We’ll definitely be back!
Delicious food! Steak, blackened mahi, raw oysters…all delicious. The lobster bisque was great! Our server, Michelle, was so sweet and kept up with our group which was impressive. Will be back! Only complaint is parking but hey, it’s ok!
We arrived at around 6pm without reservations and were seated right away. Front desk host was not friendly at all but our server was great and overall service was great. We weren’t happy with one of our sushi rolls and the manager came over and very graciously removed it from our bill. The food was very good, the fish in the sushi rolls was very good quality and fresh. My seafood pasta dish was absolutely delicious. Overall the food was great but honestly overpriced. The ambiance is very casual giving dive bar viives and parking can be challenging.
Had heard many great things about Castaway. All in all it was good not great. Operationally they were running the staff hard. They were friendly and attentive despite running many tables. My wife and I split a couple of things. We had the lobster enchiladas and a couple of sushi rolls. The enchiladas were good but not a stand out. Sauce was good, but the dish just didn’t really live up to the hype. The sushi rolls were both good. All int all we were hoping for a bit more especially for the price.
From reading the reviews, we made reservations on open table for 7pm and we were seated promptly. Several groups arrived about the same time. We chose to sit outside and were able to see a huge manatee just below the surface of the water. I enjoyed the outside and found it to be an interesting spot overlooking a campground type area. It felt very relaxed. Our service was quick especially considering how many arrived about the same time. The waitress was very accommodating with our little ones and put their order in first. The food felt a little pricey, about $10 for the kids meals (one had a hotdog and fruit, the other spaghetti and meatballs that was about 3 meatballs and lots of spaghetti noodles with a side of fries) but they liked their choices. My husband and I ordered the conch fritters which were good and similar to a crab cake. I’d never had those before and thought the conch seemed a little on the chewy side but that could be completely normal. I ordered the lionfish (to save a reef!), wrecked style with a baked potato and Caesar salad (about $43), my husband ordered the scallops with broccoli and fries. The flavor of the entrees were ok, it seemed a little pricey as well but not shocking as we had checked the menu prior to picking the place and I thought it was interesting that it had been featured on diners, drive ins and dives.
Came in for a family dinner while on a mini vacation. Our server was super nice and attentive. Parking can be a little tricky . If you get lucky and sit outside by the water you might see manatees. To start we had the crab dip and the raw oysters which both were great. Little one ate a hotdog and the oldest had tenders (which he didn’t like) For main we had the salmon which was good and the grilled snapper which was lacking a seasoning. Being in a similar restaurant a day before I can’t say I would recommend this spot.
Came specifically for the Lionfish which is one of their profiled specialties. Unfortunately, they only had it raw with sushi which is not for me. Since they depend on the charter boats for their supply it's a hit or miss. Recommend calling ahead if thats what your intending to have. Happy hour menu was pretty good. Opted for rum punch & fish fingers.
We went here for dinner and were wildly disappointed. The food is incredibly overpriced and was not good on top of it. We got the Lion fish done Wreckdiver style. The Lion fish is not worth the inflated price. The white wine butter sauce tasted more like they used water than any wine. The butter was barely identifiable either. For a $45 dollar fish it looked terrible and tasted like it was boiled in water with some garlic powder. We opted for the snapper prepared Oscar style. The blackened seasoning was ok but it was not able to over come the lack of flavor else where. I will always take flavor over presentation. The seafood dishes were F for both. The steam broccoli was the worst I have ever had. It tasted like it was boiled in old shrimp water. I barely got the napkin to my face to spit it out. I wish I had tried the Sushi those looked far better than the fish. The interior tables are cramped so request a booth. The service was very good. The inside of the restaurant is nice. Its on a canal not really a picturesque. Listen, I know Guy Fieri ate here. I doubt he would be impressed with $28 Lionfish sushi roll. This isn't a fancy Tuna thats worth the price. The guy next to me got the Lobster enchiladas they at least looked like what he made in the show. needless to say I do not recommend.
This might take the cake as the most abysmal restaurant I've ever been to. I feel like calling the food dog food is an insult to what I feed my dogs. The Bad: - seated over 30 minutes after our reservation time. - served warm michaelada (beer and bloody mary mix)and it was charged as an extremely over priced cocktail with top shelf vodka. - sat at a table covered in black mold. - a lot of bugs (in February) - we got the king of the jungle roll and the rice was extremely soggy, and the roll was disgusting. The crab and lobster roll was also disgusting. - service was very slow because there wasnt enough servers. - for two sushi rolls, one beer, and a fish bake it was $130. The Good: -
Terrible, terrible service! We had to wait 1hr and 30 mins for our food, because our order was not sent to the kitchen. The waitress told us she checked on our food a couple of times prior to actually finding out our food was not sent. We were given free dessert and the option to leave. The food finally came the fish was dry, minimal Alfredo sauce on the pasta, and the Cuban was ok. In the end, we left two hours later with a bill for $120 with a family discount! Great way to keep customers coming back! In the end, we should have left as we realize you can’t win them all per the waitress!
