Great service at a GREAT price!!
Send it Ali. You know you got this.
Yes.
Demonished the burger
Love this place!
Been here before the new ownership and my first time here was great. The burger was good and the beer cold!
Hadn't been to the Cutthroat Tavern in more than a decade. A party hosted there reminded me what a fantastic place it really is. Great food, fantastic atmosphere, excellent bar, and good people. Will definitely be back again soon!
All around the table, the six of us enjoyed our food. The staff is authentically personable. And the history of this location is a fun bonus.
I don’t give this type of review often but they were great at what they did. Hamburgers were awesome and that’s what they do along with lots of other good looking things on the menu. Beast burger was great. This is a good anchor business for a small town that has a lot to offer. Great beers and service too.
This is a great spot in this little town. I love coming here after hiking and just getting out for a drive. Their Brisket Nachos are to die for and I have not tried anything else, they are that good. This is a must stop when you are in the area!
Wow. Just ate here. Really really good. I got the brisket special which was quite possibly the best brisket I've had. Good flavor perfect smoke ring and not dry like brisket can be. Wife got pulled pork sandwich which was equally good. Crisped up a bit like carnitas and better for it. Kids menu portions were huge and good. Chicken tenders and good sized burger. Fast service to top it off. Atmosphere was friendly & local. Live music on Saturday and also good. We were just passing through but it's now a keeper and I'd detour to go there.
Our U-Haul broke down in this little town and the whole community there turned our bad day into a really great experience ! The employees at the tavern were very friendly and even offered our dogs pieces of bacon as treats. They have a really good selection of ciders and food. The beast burger was the BEST burger I have ever had, and the friendly service made it even better. JT one of the owners met us down and the visitor center and personally invited our family and dogs into their restaurant and community. 11/10 will be visiting again !
Here’s a fun Yelp-style review that feels authentic and inviting: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cutthroat Tavern is one of those places where you walk in for a quick drink and suddenly realize you’ve been there for hours having the best time. The atmosphere is fun, relaxed, and just the right amount of lively. It’s the kind of spot where strangers become friends by the end of the night. The drinks are cold, the staff is awesome, and the whole place has that classic tavern charm that makes you want to come back again and again. No pretentious vibes—just good people, good laughs, and a great place to hang out. If you’re looking for a place to unwind, meet some cool folks, and enjoy a great night out, Cutthroat Tavern is definitely worth the stop. Just be warned… “one drink” rarely stays just one. 🍻😄
Ambiance exceptionnelle, patron, employés avenants et super sympathiques. Bar,salles et terrasse exceptionnelles. Petit endroit à découvrir, sur une route fantastique en moto ou en voiture
Ali the GM also known as the "mademoiselle" has a great place, great menu options and very welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend the fish taco's; the best I have had since living in Hawaii. Mike took care of me at the bar and the food was out hot and in no time at all. Highly recommended, don't skip out.
The carnitas tacos are delicious! The smokey flavor runs deep and I'm already craving more. Great service and Not overpriced. Great part of Markleeville history.
We’ve dined at Cutthroat Café several times over the years and have always had a great experience, but I’m sad to admit I’ve never written a review until now—this place truly deserves one. I’m a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to keeping up with reviews of all the spots we visit, but this time I had to make it a priority. This isn’t just about the food (which is always solid), but about the people and the heart behind this place. During our most recent visit, we found ourselves in a bind after a disappointing situation with our reservation for dinner at 7pm at Sorrenson’s at Desolation Hotel Hope Valley. We were guests staying there and had a confrimed Open Door reservation that they would not accept due to a wedding party. We were forced to drive 15 minutes out, arriving at Cutthroat Café at 7:45 PM—just 15 minutes before closing. We hate putting any restaurant staff in that position, but we were genuinely desperate for dinner. To our relief, the staff couldn’t have been more kind or accommodating. They welcomed us warmly and never made us feel rushed. Cutthroat Café is a charming, down-to-earth gem with a fun little bar and a menu full of satisfying options. The hospitality is what really sets it apart. Whether you’re popping in for a casual meal or showing up a little frazzled like we did, you’ll be treated like family. We’ll definitely be back—and next time, hopefully earlier!
Amazing service, excellent food (we had the fish and chips and the mahi tacos), and love the ambiance!
Delicious food, warm welcome, and caring service. Best fish tacos anywhere.
Great experience on my second trip here that definitely overwrote the first. Burger was awesome and the waitress was funny and attentive. Would highly recommend!
Fabulous place to find in a beautiful and somewhat remote town called Markleeville. Great food, beer, and atmosphere especially on a warm summer night.
Fun place, great roadside tavern, great food and nice waiteress!
Cozy place in the middle of mountains. Awesome service and good food.
Great hamburger with beef raised locally in Bridgeport.. Interesting history but no ghost were heard !!
Delicious burger and I loved the atmosphere of this place! Definitely coming back.
Best food, best service, I'd give them a 6th star if I could.(:
Owner is great! Worth the stop.
Great food and fun vibe!
Great food and service!
Amazing historic building in the heart of a magical, small mountain town. Rustic decor and a great 'old west' feel. Amazing service, the staff are friendly and extremely attentive! Of you're anywhere nearby, you should definitely stop for food and/or a drink!
Dined in after a mountain bike ride in the area. It was a busy Friday night but the food came out quick and everyone in our group was happy with their order. Really great atmosphere whether in the Stopped in after a mountain bike ride in the area. Came in just as the kitchen was closing but they happily took our order on a busy Friday night. We recently made our way to The Cutthroat for the first time, and wow, we loved it! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome. To the left, the bar was packed with people chatting and laughing, having a great time. We were seated on the patio, and decided to start with the pretzel bites, fried pickles, and cheese curds. Everything was super tasty, but the cheese curds were definitely the winner—especially with those three dipping sauces. The pesto one? So good. I also tried a couple Pale Ales, which I’m now hooked on. While we were hanging out, I noticed how happy everyone seemed. It felt like everyone really appreciated being there, and it just had such a good vibe. Oh, and if you go, definitely take a minute to check out the old photos inside. The history of the place and the town is actually pretty cool. Highly recommend stopping by!
I’ve been to Cutthroat twice since they reopened, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite spots. For being in their first few weeks, the service was surprisingly smooth—friendly and attentive without feeling rushed. The Crispy Chicken Cobb was an absolute hit for both me and my kid. The chicken was perfectly crunchy, and the light dressing pulled everything together without overpowering the fresh ingredients. We also tried the fried pickles, which were super tasty (definitely recommend), and the tacos—flavorful and satisfying. It’s a great little spot to relax, enjoy solid food, and support something local. Excited to keep going back!
My first time being here and it couldn't have been a better experience! I partnered with them to host a line dancing event and it went so well! Katerina and JT were very accommodating and really care about their customers' experiences. The food looked amazing and my drink tasted great. Can't wait to go back!
Update 11/2025 - We returned to Cut Throat and our experience was remarkably different. Service was spot on and friendly. Beers were cold, burgers and fries delicious and the atmosphere was comfortable and fun. We’re thrilled to have Cut Throat Tavern back on our dining out rotation. 🎣🍔🍻 6/2025 - We visited Cutthroat as we’ve been looking forward to it reopening. Sadly the food was mediocre. Black and blue salad is boring and the meat wasn’t anything like burnt ends, you must ask your server for a knife to cut the lettuce as it was only served with a fork. Fish and chips didn’t look to be made in house, simply out of a box and fried and the fries are way too thick. Maybe opening jitters? This has been a favorite go to for us to make the drive intentionally from Tahoe. The merchandise available for purchase is spot on to the restaurant name. We would have purchased some items but nobody was there to assist. Our hope is the food improves as the concept and updates to the building look great.
Had such a great time here! The staff was super friendly and on top of everything without hovering. The food was delicious — fresh, well-seasoned, and just the right portions. The vibe was warm and comfortable, the kind of place you can sit and enjoy for hours. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to.
On recent trip to Tahoe, we had a chance to take a detour and check out the Cutthroat and we’re so glad we did! Immediately when you walk in you can feel the sense of community and history - this spot offers more than just a meal—it is a living example to the area’s history and close-knit feel. The atmosphere and service were warm and welcoming. Loved the fried pickles (they have a bite!) and trying the local beers - found a new pale ale that might be a new favorite. We happened to be there on a night they were hosting a speaker on the mining history of the area (SO interesting - ended up buying a book!) Seeing folks share not just food but also sharing stories and connecting was great to see. Will definitely add a visit to the Cutthroat for return trips to Tahoe.
The gem of Alpine County! If you’re passing through or making this your destination, it’s a must go! Great burgers, local beer & a pet friendly patio. Bartender Michael plays the best music!
Went there last week and food was excellent, service great and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. The manager served us with a smile and humor! Recommend anytime!
Stopped in here for dinner yesterday. It was excellent! Highly recommend the Mac and cheese and the big burgers! Fries were awesome too, a little spice but still ok for my kids who hate their lips to be burning. Prices were pretty reasonable and the outdoor eating area was great in the evening.
Had a lovely meal here. Literally the best chicken wings I've had (dry rub.) Staff super friendly. Cocktails were perfect! Update (31JAN26): An amazing meal with my date... again! Telling ya all -> the dry rub wings are the bees knees.
I love this place, you can feel that it's the center of energy in this cool old mountain town. We've been here regularly this year, seeing some bands on the back patio, and other days just to get a burger, fish tacos and fried pickles after biking and fishing nearby. Super welcoming historic place! Can't wait to see what they do with the upstairs floors.
We were there on a busy Labor Day weekend, service was still good and the kitchen got the meal out relatively quick enough. I had their beef and bacon burger, with regular fries and we shared fried pickles. My buddy had the carnitas tacos and was thrilled with them! I wish I'd have inquired, I could have got sweet potato fries for a little bit more and I'm normally a medium to medium well Burger but I didn't mention that and my burger came out a little on the red side. Nonetheless, it was excellent!
What a gem in Markleeville! The service was warm and friendly, the food was amazing, and the patio made it the perfect spot to relax with friends. We ended up sharing almost every appetizer because they were all so good—we couldn’t pick just one! The Tavern Burger was seriously delicious, with fresh veggies and local meat. Everything about this place feels welcoming and genuine. Can’t wait to come back.
What a gem! One of the older and cooler buildings: you feel the history when you walk in. Very friendly service and great small town vibe. Big fan of the Bacon Brussels and Beast Burger. And cheese curds. We brought the two families with ages 3-11 and kids had a great time and had plenty of menu options. There are a lot of cool trails and scenic drives nearby. My favorite option is to start at Carson Pass, ride though Hope, Faith and Charity Valleys, past Grover Hot Springs and end right at the Cutthroat.
This was the first time we ate at Cutthroat Tavern since the new owners, the place has gotten even better! The Tavern Burger is delicious and the fries are great. Also chocolate torte was delicious. Definitely stop by if you are in Markleeville
If you're traveling the Eastern Sierras or headed down Hwy 88, this is a great place for a beer, appetizers or a meal! Great staff, welcoming environment, nice outside patio, and great food! Today, I had the pork sandwich, which was awesome!
Markleeville couldn’t be luckier to have these new owners and their staff. From the front door to the farewells, you won’t find a better mountain town energy with a respect for the history of The Cutthroat Tavern.
While driving through Markleeville I was SO happy to see that the Cutthroat had reopened. My family and I camp here every summer and the Cutthroat is a place that is very special to us. Michael was our server and he was so kind and attentive. He made our quick visit very memorable. I look forward to coming back next month with my family for our annual Grover trip!
I was visiting family for the weekend and was so excited to check this place out. We happened to stop in on a Saturday when the Market at Markleeville was going on also. I had such a fantastic time! I was so impressed in the level of detail put into this place. From the moment you walk in, the charm immediately hits you. The decor is thoughtful and rich with history. Every detail feels like a tribute to the town’s roots, while still feeling fresh and welcoming. The music was really enjoyable and the staff is equally warm and inviting, making you feel like a local even if it’s your first time visiting. I opted for an Aperol Spritz and some fish tacos. The perfect combo on a hot summer day. The cheese curds were phenomenal also. Someone else had ordered these for the table, but I was really struggling to share because they were so good. If you’re anywhere near Markleeville, I highly recommend stopping by.
My new fave joint in Markleeville! I tried the delicious fish tacos made with fresh mahi mahi — so moist and tender, they melt in your mouth! They paired perfectly with the fried pickles, super crispy with a surprisingly zesty kick. Mike made us feel right at home with prompt and genuinely friendly service. The whole vibe of Cutthroat Tavern is laid back, cozy, and full of local charm. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and the quality is top-notch. Will definitely be back soon!
Try the Pork shoulder was bomb 🔥🔥🔥. Professional friendly customer service was top notch.

We ended up going to Cutthroat Tavern nearby and had a great experience. The staff was friendly and welcoming, there was live music, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and inclusive. I order the mahi-mahi taco and I can tell their fish was very fresh and cooked healthy. The food and beer were excellent. I’d definitely recommend Cutthroat Tavern.
After a short drive through the Sierras on CA-89 in the quaint, little town of Markleeville, CA is the Cutthroat Tavern. It has both inside and outside dining. We've especially enjoyed eating a nice meal with a glass of wine outside (weather permitting). Staff is friendly and the tasty meals are served quickly. A must stop while enjoying a leisurely drive through the local Sierra Nevada mountains scenery.
We were there last night to see the band. What a great experience. We will definitely return. The staff was a blast, the food was excellent. The band was THE best. The bar is clean n the atmosphere is warm n welcoming. We're an hour n half away. It was worth the drive. Thank you for making it fun. 😄
As soon I walked in, I immediately loved the vibe. The staff was incredibly nice, helpful, and provided great customer service. They even had a live singer/guitarist performing. The atmosphere felt chill, welcoming, and open-minded. I didn’t feel judged at all, and even the customers added to the positive environment. On top of that, the food and beers were amazing. Love their Mahi Mahi Taco, I can tell it was fresh and the way it was cooked was healthy too. I would highly recommend Cutthroat Tavern.
I was traveling and decided to stop by Markleeville and found this place. I was very tired and hungry and right away the bartender Michael made me feel welcomed. I tried his fish sandwich and it was amazing. The owner came over and gave me a little history of the place and also made me feel very welcomed. Even though I live an hour away , I will definitely be back just for the company and great food. The place is amazing inside, very comfortable.
I was in the tiny town of Markleeville for business and was staying next door at Creekside Lodge. It was superbowl Sunday, so I decided to stop in at get some food. The servers/bartenders were really welcoming and fun to talk to. I asked for a veggie burger and they had one! It's not on the menu but they have them. It was really good. The fries are seasoned super delicious. Servings are large, I didn't finish my fries. They also had non alcoholic Blue Moon, which is cool. They had 4 NA beers to choose from! I would definitely stop here again when in town.

Worth a visit. Bring the dog. Hey, bring two. Patio is welcoming and the staff love dogs. One tip - bring a fly racket if you sit outside. Or a frog. Two if you got em.
Cool local spot with a full bar and great food
We had already eaten lunch, but my husband’s bike group decided to stop by Cutthroat Tavern to relax and plan their upcoming ride. I shared a fish and chips with my husband—crispy, tasty, and just right for a light bite. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the staff were genuinely warm and attentive. A great local spot to unwind, catch up, and fuel up—whether you’re biking through or just passing by.
The Cutthroat had been closed for quite a while before new owners took over. We stopped in for a drink and snack, nice to see they kept the original theme. The sweet potato fries were great along with a good selection of beers and cocktails.

The food… is okay. Kind of bland. Sorry, but it’s not worth the drive out to Markleeville or its high price. If you’re backpacking and starving, it might suffice. Other than that, it’s a cute place to sit and eavesdrop (please add some soft background music!). Service was great.
A nice and somewhat cosy restaurant. We went for a group lunch as we were heading to Mammoth Lake and the service was super slow except for me and two other person from our group. The other guests had to wait more than 40min to get their order which is not really acceptable. My order was a Cutthroat Burger with some French fries which was very good and medium rare as requested. Last but not least the payment by separate checks was a bit hectic...
Really wanted to love the food here like we did with the previous owners. I had fish tacos and husband had a burger. We love the building and atmosphere and the service was excellent. Sadly the food unfortunately did not leave us wanting to return or recommend the restaurant. The food for us was okay. We didn’t have that “I can’t wait to return” reaction.
Got the chicken pot pie, no crust its bread, unseasoned and unbrowned on top of canned creamy chicken soup. Incredibly disappointing, and extremely over priced for what you get, I think it was $16. Service was slow and the place wasn't even busy. Not great all around
Place is pretty cool but disappointed with the food. Ordered for pickup and both burgers were missing the sauce and the bacon I paid an extra $5 for. One patty was overcooked and dry and the beast burger was falling apart from combining all the meats together. We were excited to try this place based off of the reviews but the food wasn’t worth the amount we paid. Idk, maybe we will try eating inside next time
