Opinions de Bill Smith Cafe Mckinney
Super good food, very welcoming environment. The waitress was so feisty, loved her lol. Food was so good . My omelette was everything! I’d say to serve with a salsa, but that’s just a preference! I wasn’t a fan of the gravy, but my friends liked it.
Melissa/Anna Babes in Business love visiting you this week and supporting your business. All local business owners coming together once per week and enjoying spending time with our local businesses like Bill Smiths!!! The food was amazing. The connections were awesome and will definitely be back to support you again.
I stopped by Bill Smith Café and wow the food was so good I literally ate it before I could even take a picture! Everything tasted homemade and fresh, just like real Southern comfort food should. The portions were generous, the service was friendly, and the place had that warm, small-town charm that makes you feel right at home. If you’re anywhere near Van Alstyne, this spot is an absolute must. Next time I’ll try to slow down long enough for a photo… but no promises!
Bill Smiths Cafe is hands down the BEST place to stop in for breakfast and lunch in Van Alstyne. The catfish I ordered was hot fresh and perfectly seasoned. We are hooked. Our service was excellent. Ms.Roxy was sweet and attentive and kept our sweet teas coming. My mother loved the blueberry pancakes she recommended. All The staff there were very attentive and lively. I definitely will be back with more family . 👍👍
Returning to Bill Smith's Cafe after its relocation to downtown Van Alstyne was like reuniting with an old friend. Though it's been years since I last visited the original location in McKinney, stepping into the new space felt both familiar and exciting. The transformation is remarkable; the cramped quarters of the old cafe have been replaced by a spacious, inviting environment with stunning brick walls and tall ceilings. Some nostalgic touches, like the deer and buffalo mounts, have made the move as well, adding to the charm of the new spot. But of course, the real star of the show remains the food, and I'm pleased to report that it's just as exceptional as ever. The aroma that greeted me as I entered instantly transported me back to my previous visits. The pancakes and biscuits and gravy, staples of my past experiences, were just as delectable as I remembered. Opting for the Papa Smith's special, I was delighted when the waitress kindly offered to serve me both a pancake and French toast, alleviating my indecision. My dad thoroughly enjoyed his Belgian waffle as well. Despite the slightly longer drive from McKinney, the experience at Bill Smith's Cafe is worth every mile. The fact that it's reopened in a new location only adds to its allure, offering a fresh start while still maintaining the essence of what made it beloved in the first place. I'm thrilled to have this culinary gem back in my rotation, and I look forward to many more satisfying meals at this cherished establishment.
What a hidden gem in McKinney! This place is truly unbelievable. Extremely friendly staff, nice homey feel inside. And the food is outstanding! I had the chicken fried steak special which was super reasonably priced – it was probably the best chicken fried steak I’ve ever had in my life and I’ve had a lot of chicken fried steaks! I highly recommend you come and try this restaurant. It truly is my on my favorite list!
My family and I stopped in for lunch today. Cafe is clean and staff was friendly. We ate the lunch specials and both came out hot and fresh. Our waitress was slow, but friendly. The wall decor goes back years, and mice to look at. Prices are reasonable for the lunches. Will return and eat lunch again, and hope to get a different waitress. I recommend anyone that wants a good home cooked lunch to stop and order one of their many options for lunch specials. $6.50 for meat and three vegetables on rolls or cornbread.
Excellent breakfast this morning! Great food, service and ambience. Bill was in the back cooking so it was a good day!

A North Texas gem. From the small town vibe to the well priced & simple menu; making a selection is a cinch. And let Candy talk you into a piece of pie before you go. It's worth it!

Used to love the McKinney location. Went for my second time to the new location during the ice storm, excited to eat a nice home made meal with my kids. Got the same waitress as before. I’m guessing she’s the one others complained about named Candy…who is the owner! lol blew my mind to read that. Candy, this restaurant doesn’t have a chance with you treating customers like crap. She blames everything on other people, is extremely rude and has left our food in the window to get cold both times. The coffee is dirty water. Food was not great. I only enjoyed the biscuits and gravy. And I literally almost got up to serve myself multiple times. Thank God another woman came out from the kitchen to help. She was so sweet and got everything we needed. Hire more good staff and stop running off your customers. I will never return here and that makes me sad.
Been here a few times over the years and the food is usually pretty decent. Today's experience left me a little speechless. Every order from drinks to our main meal was incorrect and met with the personality of our server who felt it necessary to neg us to make up for the lack of follow through on their part. Contemplating whether ill return or not, id recommend this place to anyone wanting to try a local favorite and judge for yourself.
Food is good but lady with short spiked hair is the rudest lady ever. She ruined the entire experience, taking forever to take our order and bring out our food. Would not go back!!
Ok, second chance visit today. Went for breakfast the first time. Breakfast was way over priced and the hash browns were way undercooked. I didn't want to bring this to my waitress' attn because …
The tables were a mess. We we sat down and ordered before she cleaned up the mess on the table. The food sucked. My hashbrowns were more like mashed potatoes with a crispy outer layer absolutely disgusting in the amount of butter I had on my toast would probably give me a medical condition my coffee tasted like water mixed with chewable Tylenol. It tasted absolutely disgusting. and people were yelling across the restaurant The only good thing I ate was the biscuits and gravy at least that was edible It Took forever for my food to come the omelettes suck the egg on the outside of it is just like Air if I put the egg Next to piece of paper side-by-side The paper would probably be bigger. One of my family members omelettes had raw egg in it this place absolutely sucks you should not come here
Our food was good and our waitress was very sweet! However, I have to give this place a one star due to poor management. We entered the restaurant to see the owner, an older woman with short hair. Right away she was very rude to us and told us to “just sit down somewhere in the third row.” She made absolutely no effort to be friendly to her customers who are quite literally keeping her in business. As the time went on, we noticed that she was being incredibly rude to her employees and yelling at them and ordering them around. Mind you, I wouldn’t even talk to my dog the way she was talking to her employees. We did confirm that she was the owner and were baffled that any type of business owner would treat employees that are actively working hard to make her more money. This was such a shame because overall, the waitress was very sweet and the food was okay for a small cafe. I would not recommend eating here and supporting someone who can be so terrible to the people working for her. If you value kindness at all, please do not support this woman.
Bill Smith’s …. “Sit Anywhere” the sign says outside “But don’t expect good service” is what it should also say. Pictured is my hot roast beef sandwich… dry, tired tough roast beef, packaged brown gravy, generic white bread and commercial frozen fries. This is home cooking? They don’t even offer honey mustard dressing for salads which is honey, mustard and mayo .. staples in any home kitchen. But they’re too lazy to make it and too cheap to buy it pre-made. This place is way over hyped.
I literally made a google account just to leave this review. 3 times we have tried this place. Idk how this place is so highly rated, maybe we just have the worst luck but won’t be back. 1st time had wrong order and a hair in my pancakes. Second time our eggs were colder than the iced tea and pancakes were never brought out. And this time i placed a to go order. Got up there at the pickup time and was told the soup I ordered was out, but to try the other soup. I said ok and waited another 30 minutes just to get handed my wife’s food and a “oh we are out of all soups so here you go have a nice day”… I said ok…so i just don’t get anything then? Reply was well idk what to tell you we are out of soup. I guess she assumed I just wouldn’t want food or something. I just walked out. Wife took 3 bites of the food and threw it away. It’s worth driving to Anna at this point. Will not be back
Absolutely a one and done for me. The nightmare starts the second you walk in the door. One would think there would be a hostess stand to take down your party's name, but no...everyone just stands at the door waiting for someone to acknowledge them. Today, that took 10 mins. Finally a woman comes over and asks if we put our name on the list yet and all 4 cpls standing there said, what list? She took our name down. It took another 10 mins to be sat, which isn't unusual for any restaurant that's busy on a Saturday morning. As we are standing there we hear the older short lady with spiky hair SCREAM out names from the list. Not a big deal to us considering we were by the front door. Whole 'nuther ballgame when she's doing it right in your ear as she's walking up and down the aisle right beside you. 🤬 She came over after about 5 mins and took our drink order. I told her tea with no lemon and she said "I never put lemon in it anyway. I don't have time for all that mess." We laughed it off and then proceeded to wait 10 mins for her to return to our table asking, "oh yeah what drinks did y'all have? They stuck me at the register." We told her and off she went to get our drinks finally. She came back making the excuse that she has told them she can't run food, check on her tables and run the register at the same time. Not one single time did she apologize for the wait nor the forgetting our order. She takes our order and after 30 mins of waiting and still no food, (my glass empty by this time) I track her down and ask her if she could please check and see when our food would be done. She jokes and says 2 years and some odd days. I almost threw a $5 on the table and walked out right then. I told her my hubby needed to hurry up and get back to work and she pretends to call his employer and make an excuse for him to be late. At this point we realize, empathy is NOT in the cards at this point...just excuses. 15 mins after that our food finally came out, if you can even call it that. I FINALLY got my drink filled and thank God I did bc I needed it to help choke down the food. The toast was good and so were the 2 side eggs I got. The all meat omelet was awful. The ham was the only thing not burnt in it. The bacon was so hard it was inedible and the sausage was dried out and extra fried. The omelet was NOT 3 eggs that's for sure and you can see from the pics, it was also burnt. The hashbrowns were bland and undercooked. ALL OF THE FOOD WAS COLD. Don't get me started on my husband's breakfast but I'm sure you can find his review on here of the sad chicken and waffle he got. After doing the math on our check we should have been charged $32.50 with tax. We were charged $37. Not sure how their math computes but we made up for it by not tipping. With rude waitstaff, lengthy kitchen times and then putting out less than mediocre food, I don't see this place lasting as long as it did in McKinney. Maybe Bill needs to think seriously about all the 1 star reviews he has gotten, especially about his waitresses and cooks, and make some changes. Until then, we won't be back.
