Opinions de Cho's Hawker Center Menlo Park
It used to be at Menlo Park downtown and I ordered from very often. Since they moved, I have been using Uber Eats for take out. Their food quality is even better nowadays. Highly recommend!
We come here often because we live nearby - all the employees have been very kind and friendly. We love their lychee champagne, and their desserts are sooo good (especially the fried banana). In terms of food, we've tried many dishes, most are yummy, though a few somewhat bland (read the menu closely, you can see if you are getting something with spice or bland from the ingredients list)
As a born and bred Singaporean living in the Bay Area, I'm always on the lookout for food from home. Shiok is one of just a handful of places here that hits the spot for me. The food is simple and unpretentious, with authentic flavors that remind me of hawker center fare from back home. Try the fried carrot cake--it's not on the menu, but they'll make it on request for those in the know. I also like the hokkien mee, which they cook in the Singapore style. Is any of this gourmet food? Honestly, no. Back home, each of these would just be a $4 common dish. But here in the Bay Area, Shiok is a rare and very welcome outpost of the flavors of Singapore. Love it!
Very authentic well, well-flavored Singaporean food they have! I have lived in Singapore for a long time, and I was impressed by all the delicious dishes that were very easy to reproduce! 😋 we tried a chicken rice, Laksa noodle, Butter Prawns, Poti Prata, Chicken Satay, they all great! They also carry some Indonesian food and Malay food too, like, Nasi goreng, Mee goreng and Nasi lemak. We like to try Kopi next time! ☕️
I've been here a few times prior to the pandemic since I had worked close by. It's been a few years since I had come since it's a bit far for me. This is my favorite place to go for Laksa so I had to order that and it did not disappoint. Tasted like just what I remembered. The price is also not too expensive especially for lunch. We also ordered the roti and another noodle dish. Both were good but my main dish was the laksa. I can't really find a good restaurant that makes laksa close to my neighborhood. I definitely would go back even if it is a long drive.
As a Singaporean who hasn't been home for 2 years, this was a really special meal for me. It was a pleasure to introduce my colleagues to my home cuisine! I did wish the service would've been a bit more personal and the table was left uncleared for a long time, but I'm giving 5 stars because the food was great and the experience was overall 100!
A cozy Asian eatery that seats 25-30 people, offering exceptionally delicious and authentic dishes. It has a few outdoor seating also. I savored the flavors of roti prata, rice pot, and mee goreng. Highly recommended for those looking to experience Singaporean cuisine. Free Parking available in the neighborhood.
Authentic Singapore establishment serving great Singapore local fares. Tried the Char Kway Teow and Hokkien Mee. It was really really great! For the price, the portion could have been bigger. But no complains here because the portion is also authentically Singapore. Will definitely return!
Pronounced "she-oak", this Singapore English or Singlish superlative word means tasty or delicious, referring to food; satisfying or pleasing, referring to an experience. The food was so good and authentic that the restaurant should rename itself “Damn Shiok” because it deserves to double up on the superlatives!
Now don't get me wrong - this place wouldn't survive in Singapore. People would just go next door to a restaurant where the roti prata is fluffier and less dry, where the Hainanese chicken rice is more succulent, and the chili crab is more flavorful. But this isn't Singapore, choice for Singaporean food is limited, and this is one of the better places, so...

Best laksa I’ve found on the West Coast, and we’ve tried a lot. It’s takeout only, and parking can be a little annoying, but it’s doable. We order from their website all the time. Their laksa has saved me on multiple occasions when my kid refused to eat anything else except this. The broth is so comforting and satisfying, one of those noodle soups that soothes my soul.
I love Shiok! I have been going there since I was a kid (back when they had the San Carlos location), and I was so sad when they closed last year. Now that they're back, I can get my fix of Singaporean food via takeout. The Nasi Goreng is amazing, you can never go wrong with the chicken rice, and it would be criminal not to get an order of their Roti with Curry Sauce.

Get their value lunch set! I've eaten Food in Singapore, but it doesn't have quite the umami flavor I was looking for. The Hokkien Noodle in this restaurant comes with a small cut lemon which really pulls out the fragrance of the gravy. Note* - distinct area serve and cook Hokkien Noodle differently. Horfun in the menu refers to Wat tan hor or (Hua Dan He). Anyway, the portion is decent and the waitress is friendly. Worth a try but of course, you'll need to go to Singapore or Malaysia to try their local food to mesmerize the unique flavor(the umami I was after).
I always get the same thing when I go because it’s so good: chicken satay and roti prata. Went for some desert from the extensive list of options and tried the fried ice cream. Honestly.. I wish there was a little bit more ice cream in the middle and less dough, I was searching for the ice cream wondering where it was.
Such a nice restaurant to have enjoyed through the years. Several favorite dishes here including their Shokong beef, nasi goreng and assorted noodle dishes. The service has always been great even when dealing with lines out the door. I just heard they are closing their doors ! I hope and pray they do find another location to continue making their delicious meals.
Went for lunch with a large group. They were accommodating and took our orders on time and correctly. Some of the chicken/beef dishes were a bit dry but tasty overall. I'm sure dinner time is much better.
This place is good but not wowed yet. No where else to compare to for Singaporean other than my Singapore experience. Great, would get again: Duck garlic noodle Hainan chicken rice (second time wasn't as good) choy kuay tiew. Coconut rice Crispy fish with sambal Sea bass in banana leaf Stir fry veggies OK. Won't get again: Lettuce cup Small plate veggies curry
I hadn't known that this was like a cute homely place, but it is and so was the food. The Roti Prata was perfect, not too oily, the chicken Satay was flavorful and my wife really enjoyed the Lychee Champagne and their coffee. She loved the mlMee Goreng noodles as well. I didn't care for the Singapore chicken fried rice or my black rice dessert but I would definitely go again as I took liked the noodles.
This is one of our favorite Singaporean food restaurants in the Bay Area - the quality is consistently good and prices are very reasonable. The most authentic dishes in my opinion are the Hokkien mee, char Kway Teow and Hor Fun. The menu is extensive. Go early to avoid crowds and the wait for food can be long. Highly recommended.
Cute little Singaporean Restaurant in Menlo Park. Limited seating in a cozy setup. History: Established in 1999. Began as a small 16 seat hole-in-the-wall on the quiet part of Laurel Street in San Carlos, moved to Menlo Park soon after. Everything we ordered here was at their best taste. We experimented with some items which we haven’t had earlier. Sambal Kangkong - Spicy tangy appetizer, though spinach stalks were little chewy. Okra option is available too. Felt $17 a tad expensive for that. Chicken Satay - On sweeter side, expected it to have little spice. Hor Fun - Full of deliciousness, go for it if you are an egg lover. Soupy eggy flat noodle delight. Laksa - Show stopper of the day. If you like aroma and taste of dried shrimp and into soupy noodles, this is for you. Can’t stop eating it. We ordered Lychee Spritz and Lime Juice as coolers. Owners were amazing. We just loved the hospitality. They were so friendly and understanding. We made a mess at the table while dining with kid. They switched the table for us with a smile. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
I was so excited to find this place! Turns out they've been around for decades, so that goes to show they're a staple in the neighborhood. We came here around 7:30PM on a Saturday, and parking was really easy. It was great that they had a good crowd still at this house. We got seated within 5 minutes! For dinner, we had: - Singapore Chicken Rice (aka Hainan Chicken Rice) - Duck Garlic Noodles - Roti Prata - Chicken Satay The chicken rice wasn't super stand out. The chicken was cooked well and the rice was good, but the sauce and overall flavor was a 4/5! The duck garlic noodles were super delicious! I stopped ordering garlic noodles from restaurants for a while, because it usually clumps up when the noodles chill. But we had a taste of the noodles right when they were served and again after trying everything else. I loved that they stayed chewy, bouncy, and didn't clump up. 5/5! The roti prata was soft, crispy, and toasty with a delicious curry sauce. I loved that they separate the roti into small pieces, since it's usually too hot to handle at first. 5/5! The chicken satay was fantastic on its own. The sauce that came with it was okay, but I didn't feel like it improved the chicken. 4.5/5! Can't wait to come back! I want to try the Beef Rendang next time (and get more garlic noodles).
Good service, reasonable prices and decent selection of menu options. Portions we're on the smaller side, with the exception of the noodles. Unfortunately the noodles we're overcooked and gummy. Everything else was great: roti, string beans, and chicken -- tasty and good presentation. And the vegetables still we're crisp.

My rating is for overall but the Hokien Mee deserves ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but the rest is really nothing to write home about. I also don’t know why this place always gives out dried limes and lemons! I mean we are in california, where do you even find dried citrus ? Also don’t order the string beans, it looks like someone ate 75% of the order and then served it. They shouldn’t be so superdupa stingy with the portions of string beans, it’s only 1.99 per pound at cost even with inflation. Go for the hokkien mee and don’t bother with the rest. They always forget to give hot sauce upon request too🙄
The food taste is quite terrible to be honest. They got a 3 star purely based on decent service, otherwise it would be closer to 1. We had the Claypot and Singaporean Chicken, which were both quite tasteless. The one thing that tasted good was the Roti Prata, which you would get for much cheaper in any Indian restaurant. The tea is like Indian tea too, and for $6 a cup, it’s quite an up sale. Definitely not coming back, but also, I’m sure Singaporean food tastes better than this.
Had dinner around 7.20 pm. This area gets fairly isolated and dark on a weekday. We ordered Shook soup, pepper prawns, Jasmine rice and Rendang beef. The soup was the last one to come out. So our main dishes got cold by the time we tasted the soup. Shiok soup: 3/5. It kind of tasted like a soup you would make when someone is sick with hardly any flavor. So if you are going for a simple ginger based broth, this is the soup for you. Rendang: 4/5 . The flavor was very good but Rendang is usually a little spicier. Some of the corners of the meat looked burnt and like it has been heated too many times. Pepper prawns: 3.5/5 My friend said the taste was good but for the money paid, there were too few prawns on the plate. Overall, we didn't think it was good value for the money and don't see ourselves coming back unless we are really craving Singaporean/ Malaysian food. The server was friendly and it's a small place with a few nice decor.
A decent spot for a meal solo or with a group. Restaurant is a bit shabby and dim, and service could be better. Price is ok. Food is high quality but definitely not something to rave about. Got the laksa. Fresh and creamy, but could be spicier. Definitely felt more home style with simpler flavours. The portion size is a bit on the small side for the price. Had to remind the waiters twice for water, and the food was a bit slow to come out. Overall though, still had a better time than most places. Worth a visit if you're around. Would also recommend coming with a group since there's lots of family style dishes!
Very mild flavors, noticeably light on spice and fragrant herbs. Nasi Lemak had a passively crispy fried chicken accompanied by sambal lacking a punch beyond slightly sweet. Claypot Rice was simply rice spooned into a claypot (no crispy bottom) topped with a simple stir fry. If in the mood to stimulate one’s palate, here may not be it.

Very disappointing char kway teow. Too sweet (tastes a bit like jajangmyeon) and not spicy enough, despite asking for extra spicy.
Came highly recommended by a friend who is from Singapore who goes here every time they are in town. So our expectations were very high. Maybe because of this but we found the food was very bland and as such a disappointment. Even our friend who came with us agreed that something was off. Maybe because they are closing in a week? Hope they find a new location and once they open back up we might try again.
We had the Hainan chicken twice there but it’s definitely not worth it. First we ordered it and thought it was authentic-not a lot of meat, mainly rice. I rather get them from chicken meets rice. Then, we tried to order Hainan chicken from this area and realized it’s from Shiok instead of the real chicken meets rice on Uber eats! Don’t get tricked, it’s not good. Anything else maybe we can give it a try for Singaporean food but not the Hainan chicken.
The food was disappointing. Nothing hit the mark. Not coming back again. Dishes tried: Roti prata - the best dish of the night. Crispy and light. Curry sauce was just ok. 4/5 Chicken satay - too sweet. Weak seasoning flavors. Not at all authentic. One order has 2 sticks. 3/5 Sambal fish fillet - taste was good. Spicy and savory. But the fish wasn't very fresh. 3/5 Seafood Hor fun - big fail. It was swimming in tasteless soupy sauce. Way too wet. The flavors fell flat too. Just weird. 1/5. Sambal prawn - flavors were pretty good. Spicy and savory like it should be. 4/5 Nasi lemak rice - barely a hint of coconut flavor. Tasted like white rice rinsed in coconut water. 0/5 Chicken flavored rice - 3/5 Shiok spare ribs - not good at all. A side of salad greens with 4 pieces of ribs. Huge chunks of ribs with hardly any meat on them. Flavor wasn't great. 2/5. Over all the food was underwhelming. I'm not keen to return here at all. The ambience was dim and the place smelled like the food. Be prepared to do a thorough washing of everything after a meal here. The service was odd too. When we asked for additional bowls to share the hot fun, the waitress looked at the 5 of us and asked how many bowls? Duh!!
Very overpriced for small portions and OK tasting food. The stir-fried rice noodles were a tad sweet, roti was a bit charred, the steamed bass tasted great, but has a fishy smell when it cooled (freshness?) and the ribs were a bit tough and chewy.
Made a reservation on yelp. Arrived 10 mins early and got to seat at the door. Hello, the restaurant wasn't full at all and we were not walk-in... the overhead light was way too bright and gave me headache. Asked to switch table and then seated at the back by the kitchen. Bad customer service to begin. We lived in Singapore for 4 and 8 years respectively so we know what constitutes SG food without the Malay or Indonesian twist. 1. Roti Prata 👌 close enough. 2. Singaporean Hokkien Mee 👌too wet but acceptable. 3. Nasi Lamak 😣 no ajar, no ikan bilis, rice was too wet, peanuts not fried and tossed with salt, and the hard boil egg was tasteless. The only thing true to SG standard is the sambal. 4. Sambal Kankong 🙄 should be only sambal sauce and the ong choy... why there's so much basil, red onion and red pepper in this plate? Not enough sambal and the portion was pathetic. 5. Nonya fish (too shock when seeing the plate and forgot to take a photo)... Don't waste your money, please do not order. If you want real Singapore food in the bay area, go somewhere else.
OK service. Food isn't that great, portion sizes are small. Overall a pretty bad experience. We went there expecting some good Singaporean cuisine but were very disappointed. What makes it worse is that service is very awkward. Would definitely avoid if possible

So you may be confused at the reviews here, 4.1 stars yet all recent ones are negative. Looks like about 4 months ago they closed and swapped to a ghost kitchen (takeout only) setup, and the food quality declined a lot. So please listen to the recent reviews! I ordered takeout from here and the chicken was extremely dry.
Place was empty. I ordered to go during lunch time cost almost $20. Paid $20 with tip. Food tasted okay, lots of rice and salad, but not much meat. If I hadn't asked for utensils there would've been none on the to go bag that was handed to me. Won't come back. Probably why the place was empty during lunch time. Maybe serve generously and you'll have customers? Good luck staying open for business.
Note this is now a GHOST KITCHEN 🚫 You may be wondering “what about the images showing a restaurant?” Well the images are inaccurate. This is NOT a dine-in location. It may have once been but no longer as of April 2025. We saw others get bamboozled too - trying to enter the ‘restaurant’ or locate it onsite. Do not be fooled, you have been warned.
So disappointed. Never gave out such a negative review since I had a Google account but… LOTS of bugs constantly fly around our dishes. Talked to the staff and they said it’s summertime and that’s also because their food smells too good. Can’t imagine how things are inside of the kitchen in the back. I just wanted to quickly stuff myself and run asap. Tiny bones in Hainan Chicken! Be careful when chewing. They are sharp and might hurt your gums. Servers never came. Had to go to the counter and asked for the check by ourselves. Thought they were busy but found both of them basically standing there and doing nothing.
So disappointed. Singapore food is famously yummy and satisfying. This restaurant ruins all that. I’m sure this family situation means well, but the kitchen is hugely lacking in talent and the family members out front need to learn everything about basic service. Our Five Spice Pork Roll was weirdly flavourless and with a consistency that felt like it was made yesterday and microwaved. My Duck Garlic Noodles (Sounds fantastic, right?) had an awful presentation - and btw was brought to table one minute after the appetizer had arrived, so my wife watched me eat… - with a small portion, flavourless prep, and oddly all the noodles chopped into small segments like for a child. My wife’s Laksa - a Singapore staple - was almost okay but the pre-cooked noodles were way overcooked - a cardinal sin. The two lads handling service - we were the only seated customers btw - never collected any of the dishes!! Drives me nuts. So, avoid avoid avoid!! This family needs to pivot into something (ANYTHING) else besides restaurant business.
