Stumbled upon this place by accident. I was not expecting much by the simple exterior but the food was amazing and great value! Would recommend!
This is where you go for good, real Mexican food. My Mama would approve. Quaint hole in the wall restaurant with reasonable prices and great customer service.
Has been my go to spot for the bays best breakfast burrito for years now. The chorizo breakfast burritos are so good I have to order two every time I go!
Best service and genuine Mexican fresh cooked meals in this area all freshly cooked no can products. Try it once you wiil never regret the visit meals to go
Small but food is awesome! True mexican food. Very clean, fresh ingredients, loved their salsa and great customer service.
Best place you can eat for tacos, quesadillas, any Hispanic dish you can think of they got it food is delicious service on point and prices make sense you get a big plate for any meal you choose so price is worth it
Another great establishment in Redwood City, this hole-in-the-wall joint has got a variety of dishes that are both hearty and flavorful.
Absolutely the freshest ingredients used........ I cannot recommend it higher........ Worth the drive......AND....there's parking...................you remember "parking"........ don'tcha?
Excellente!!! Great food, very well prepared portions and authentic Mexican flavor..
Always fresh food And rapid services
Very good meats, amazing salsas, extremely good prices. About as genuine as Mexican food can get
Fresh Food Always Lupita always with great Customer service 100% recommended
Delicious food, friendly staff
Love this place! My go to for Camarones ala Diabla and the milanesa. Everything is fresh and clean!
This is a local favorite. It is run by two sisters, food is always good, fresh and there are veggie options.
If you are in the area and have some time to sit down at a homey, authentic Mexican restaurant, stop at Mexcal Taqueria. The service was top notch and our needs/wants were met very quickly. I ate seven tacos there and the free chips and salsa was a very nice touch. Out of all the taquerias on Middlefield I think this and Grulle #1 are the best.
This is definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area and there are many to choose from in the area. Some might argue other places have better burritos or tacos but this is my favorite because they have good tacos and burritos BUT they also have other items like Chiles rellenos, quesabirria, and they're consomé was hellllla good. Anyways they're also pretty quick, good prices, and friendly
Love the food, the service is amazing. Real authentic Mexican food, done as you order. Price is very fair. Ask for the Thelma*s Micheladas the are on smack!!!!! Don't forget to tip 😉
Road-weary, I stopped in Redwood City for quick provision shopping. Stumbled upon this place. Carnitas tostado was off the hook. Amazing flavor of the meat, piled high with toppings and served with a warm smile.
You could go to Mexico, but it's easier to come here, and just as delicious! A must is there homemade corn tortillas, and though everything here is excellent, I can't resist the tacos and sopes :)
Place is just fantastic. All the meats are amazing. I highly recommend anyone looking for authentic Mexican food to try this out.
Unfortunately I just moved out of town but before I moved this was by far my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area the food is absolutely delicious the staff is always courteous and the price just can't be beat if you haven't tried it stop in today
Great Tacos. Even though the prices keep going up it’s still amazing value . A real dive in the best way. It ain’t pretty but it is soo good...
The food is delicious. Very flavourful and the salsa is spicy.
Great place for this excellent Mexican food at an affordable place, the cook is preparing fresh tortillas and this makes the difference!
A small, cozy restaurant. We were returning from Yosemite and were really hungry. We were in the mood for Mexican food and found Mexcal on Google. We were not disappointed at all. Everything from the location, staff, menu and ambience looked authentic. Since the menu didn't have a description of the dishes, we were searching on Google to understand what they are. I ate the Chili Verde (and, I highly recommend it!) which is one of the top dishes of this restaurant. I loved it! It was delicious. The pork curry had the right amount of tanginess (I usually don't like really tangy food) and everything else on the plate complemented it perfectly. The Indian in me was happy to eat this dish. The rice portion is small so I ordered extra. Sadly, I couldn't finish the pork curry as I was full by then. But, if I'm ever in this part of the world again, I'll definitely eat here. The servers were patient and welcoming. 5 stars for the food and the service.
My daughter turned me on to this little hole in the wall while I was visiting Menlo Park. Very good food and great service
Awesome place with great food. Loved the tacos

I’ve lived on the Peninsula for 25+ years and Mexcal is our go-to place for authentic Mexican cooking. When you enter the restaurant, you feel like you are being welcomed into your grandma’s home. Regulars are greeted by name and every order is taken with the utmost warmth, care, and attention. Prepare to wait about 20 minutes for your food, but know the wait will be worth it for these delicious made-to-order dishes. For us, the star of their menu is the sopes. Great with chicken, al pastor, and carne asada. Plus fantastic barbacoa on the weekends! No hay lugar donde preparan la comida con tanto amor como lo hacen ustedes- ¡mil gracias!
It's one of the best Mexican food restaurants in the area. They offer many home style cooked meals, but I usually go on the weekends to eat their beef barbacoa. They serve it in tacos or as a stew in a bowl to which you can add the salsa, onion, cilantro and lime. In addition they provide hand made tortillas which is the best way to have it. With great service and ambiance it no wonder people keep coming back for more.
Genuinely delicious. I think I'll become a regular 😆
very excellent. tacos meat was tender and juicy. tacos itself were fresh and not too thick. prices are good for the size. place is not dingy, it is clean. would be nicer with more salsa choices. high on the list
Amazing food. Tortillas are served warm, which was such a pleasant surprise. We ate vegetarian dishes. Food was very tasty and enough quantity. The best was agua fresca ( pineapple), which everybody (kids and 2 of us) liked. The price is pretty cheap for the quality they offer. There was music on and a vendor visited us all with colorful trinkets to sell - best atmosphere I would say :) Local gem I would say.
Great hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. Their English was weak and my Spanish is weaker, but good intentions triumphed. I am vegetarian so I requested a breakfast burrito with no sausage, just eggs, cheese, beans, and rice, with some salsa. The result was succulent, juicy, heavy, and tasty, the warmest comfort food you can imagine. Truly nourishing. And at a great price too. Highly recommend.
Went for office lunch with my team. Staff was friendly and food is amazing. Simple but clean interior, of course menu is in Spanish 😀
The nicest people! Excellent service and good. Very vegetarian friendly. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed the fresh avocado, tomato, lettuce, lemon and radish which accompanied my enchiladas verdes. It's a small detail, but fresh vegetables really do it for me. My bf's asada burrito was really tasty, too! If you know of the asada at Tacos Por Favor in Los Angeles, you'll like this asada.
Really great spot but get their a lil earlier than you think it gets crazy busy real fast any meal time
Great food, and nice service. Small outdoor space with a few dining tables.
Yummy! And they are super nice! My new favorite place. Very clean :)
Nice people, good simple food … Just a little $$$
Down-to-earth taqueria with all the standard offerings. I was a big fan of their house made salsa — had a great spice level to it. Can’t go wrong with this place.
Really nice inside with the wall murals. Good service.Food-wise: Chip N salsa excellent Fish taco had good quality fish, tortillas are homemade but flour not corn and not that flavorful, missing cilantro Ribs were good, can order again Fish fillet same fish as in taco, good Mojarra Frita looks good but turns out we don't like mojarra. Vegetables fresh. Was able to substitute peppers and onions with beans and rice. Carnitas tostada.. excellent Lengua tostada .. good. Asked for no cheese and no sour cream. They loaded it with avocados! Next time see if they have corn tortillas. Would come back, good quality ingredients. Pretty low on flavor though had to add lots of salsa. Ask for limes and cilantro.
Very good place to drop by and have smtg to go! Thanks

Our friend, Dave, recommended eating here for dinner as it's one of his favorite places. It was incredibly good. I suspect there are several items better than the burrito I had because the tostada we had was incredibly yummy. Dave's shrimp were perfect, and I enjoyed the tomatillo to balance the avacdo. I'll be returning.
March 2025: I used to frequent this place in 2017 (when my office was nearby.) The only thing that's changed since then is the prices (but it's the same everywhere, way up.) But the quality of food and service are still excellent. In the last few years, I've been to a lot of Mexican places near my home in Santa Clara, in search of "my comfort food". But most don't have good Enchiladas, or don't give chips & salsa, or they whine about giving you extra salsa or chips or just refuse). This place hasn't changed a bit in this regard. Warm smiles greeted us, the English-speaking woman came out to assist us when we needed help ordering, they asked us to be seated and brought out the chips & salsa (which they gladly replenished for me as I devoured it). Great spicy & super tasty salsa. Enchiladas Vere had 4 enchiladas - with 3 kinds of meat options (I got two steak, pork, and chicken). All were freshly made. The plate came with avocados in the salad, and fresh beans & rice. Amazing that 8 years later, and the quality of food and service is still the same! Loved coming here today. (Only the prices are steep - but that's true for every other place. So not sure what they or I can do about it.)

I've eaten here a couple of times and also ordered take-out. The employees are very nice and friendly. Parking can be an issue here. They do have a lot on the left of the restaurant but it can get very cramped and crowded. Street parking is available but you may have to hunt for an open spot. I am a sucker for Chile Rellenos and have had theirs twice with the red sauce. They are pretty good here. I was annoyed because when I ordered take-out I had to pay the full price for 1 chile relleno but didn't get any rice or beans with it. I'll be sure to ask for the rice and beans with it next time. Their fish tacos are great and so are the Camarones a la Diabla (shrimp with a deep red spicy sauce). I also love the flavor of their Caldo de Camaron y Pescado -- mild fish/shrimp soup that is perfect for a cold day. Both are served with fresh tortillas! The carnitas burrito and the sopes were just OK. The carnitas meat was a bit dry.Probably wouldn't order these again. The salsa is not spectacular either.
I ordered a super carne asada burrito. It was OK. Good size, but the flavor was a little lackluster. The chips, however, were awesome. Atmosphere is small and (when I went) crowded. I had to take my food to go since there was nowhere to sit. And they take Visa, which is a huge plus!

I called in and tried to order a food item based on the menu they provide to only be told they dont sell the items i was asking for since it a old menu. SO be careful they might not have what you want even if its on the menu. When asked if they will update the menu they laughed and said no.
Went there with my family to get burritos, we were Four. The two lady’s were just sitting at the table watching YouTube videos and looked bothered for us walking in. We ordered Four Burritos and Four large drinks and they charged us $83 and we had to ask for salsas and the waiter only gave us two small salsas for all four of us. The steak in the burrito was good but not THAT good.
