Dinner and history combine at the Smokestack. Located off I-20 in the remains of the Mercantile of now all but gone Thurber, Texas (population, 5) is this delightful restaurant. The staff is friendly and the portions are huge. Expect to ask for a to go box. There are historical photos on the walls and remains of the town are dotted around the land outside. The parking lot is unpaved but large. Worth the stop. Take time to read the signs and explore the Smokestack and buildings that remain.
Traveling west on I-20 out of Ft Worth and decided to look for a place to eat. Not much out this way. Came up on the old ghost town of Thurber TX and saw the Smokestack Restaurant. I don’t impress easily, but the food was AMAZING. The special cost less than $10 and delicious according to the table next to us.chicken pot pie, salad, drink and dessert. I had the chicken fried steak and hubby had sirloin steak. We both had baked potatoes and salads. Delicious! Did I mention that it was in the coolest old mercantile building I’ve ever seen.
Worth the drive from Abilene every time. They have a regular menu but the old fashioned blue plate specials are hard to pass up.
For an appetizer we got the smokestack spuds, a loaded jalapeño and cheese tator tots. I had the “Greasy Cheesy” cheeseburger. The bun was elite, the burger as a whole was delicious! The fries were seasoned and crisp, exactly how I like them. Wife had the chicken fried steak and it looked amazing as well. I had to order a side roll, and I was happy I did, it was fluffy and delicious! This is a great restaurant
Absolutely Awesome, food is stellar, service was even better. Chicken fried steak is very possibly the best in the state. We used to go down the road but it's gone downhill, but will never pass up a chance to eat here again. Service was exceptional and attentive... Waitress was awesome and manager was working his butt off making sure everyone in the place was happy. Highly recommend
The food and service is always excellent. The best chicken tenders ever. I had the chicken and waffles special which was amazing.
Best Chicken Fried Steak on the planet! My loaded baked potato was truly loaded with Cheese, Sour Cream, Butter and topped with Real Bacon. Rolls tasted like fresh baked bread and the side salad was on the large side. My dinner also came with sweet and savory cooked carrots...one of my true favs anx reminded me of the carrots my Gramma used to make. Butter Milk Pie for dessert was "to die for"! This place is about 75 miles west of Fort Worth right on I-20...but you will thank me if you make the trip. Amazing historic pictures all over the restaurant and there is also a great back-story to The SmokeStack in Thurber TX...Google it!
Stopped to check out the smoke stack. As I was walking to it I smelled the aroma from the great smelling food and said, yeuuuup, I am eating lunch there! Immediately I knew the staff was great and noticed they worked very well together. The food... I had the meatloaf, loaded baked potato, and green beans... It was a great meal. Great establishment and decorated with local history. Five star rating all around. Thanks for a great experience!
Molly (the owner) has this restaurant packed every time I'm in town and the food is worth the wait. She's carrying on the legacy of great food and great service!
These burgers and cheese sticks are awesome. The Texas Toothpicks and spuds aren’t bad either Food is a little slow to come out but it comes out fresh and delicious. Never once had to even think about my drink needing a refill, which is to say the service is excellent. Wife had the macaroni and cheese, fried okra, and peaches. She said the Mac and cheese was really good. Everything was fresh and delicious and a cute atmosphere.
Traveling from Wisconsin we stopped for a meal and it is the BEST meatloaf I can recall having, ever! Tastiest beef I've eaten a very long time!! Our waitress was the sweetest and so was the other staff who delivered our meal. We had 2 meals while there with one to go and the price was under $60.00 Can't beat those prices! Thank you Smoke Stack <3 your people are amazing & so is your food! Sandi & Bill
Food was incredible Got the Cheeseburger'chucken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fried okra, and onion rings.. soo good I forgot to take pictures! Honestly some of the best onion rings is ive ever had. Saved room for dessert; buttermilk pie, sundae and apple pie. Seriously this pie with ice cream is insanely good. I wish I didn't live 4hours away. Eat here and treat yourself.
This restaurant is sooooo good.. Just off of I-20 next to the 128 ft tall Smokestack. You gotta try this down to earth delicious just like home cooked food ... I had the special of the day ... smothered pork chops with okra, green beans and peach cobbler .. I gotta tell ya .. DELICIOUS !!!! Also , our waitress "Tiffany" was super friendly , kept our glasses filled and recommended sites in the area. Kudos and thank you Tiffany .. We will be back next time we come through ... 5 BIG TEXAS STARS AND 2 THUMBS UP !
Have driven past this restaurant for almost 12 years on the way to West Texas, first time experiencing it today. The service was AMAZING! The food was awesome, we all enjoyed the Greasy Cheesy Cheeseburger. Highly recommend the onion rings and the jalapeno and cheese tater tot bites. The atmosphere of the restaurant, nostalgia, and history of this town is just wonderful. This will now be a regular stop on our future trips.
Always good. Whatever I get. Strawberry cobbler is very righteous if they have it. It's all good. Have had several things. Never disappointed.
went with my best friend & OMG! the service, food, prices, ambiance, EVERYTHING was superb. BEST FOOD EVER! coffee to die for. Yauri ROCKS! all the folk there ROCKED! ever in the area around Thurber, Texas you NEED to stop at The SmokeStack Restaurant. 👍🏻😋👍🏻😋👍🏻😋 I ordered Andrea's chicken mushroom sandwich! YUMMYLICIOUS! 😋
Second time here and we absolutely this restaurant!! The food is amazing and the staff is so wonderful, and the prices are good and the portions are great!! We appreciate this restaurant as being a truck driver and his girlfriend
Pork chops were unbelievably tender, juicy and flavorful. No idea what they put in their brown gravy for the mashed potatoes but it was also very good. Service was excellent and her pork chop recomendation was no different. The atmosphere is amazing, outside venue area, inside they remodeled the old merchantile and have so much history to read and photos to gaze through.
Had the 6oz Sirloin and eggs. The steak had and excellent taste and was just a little past Medium Rare. The eggs were perfect....Over Medium. And, I love the way they toast my English Muffin on the grill! Nice and crunchy! The atmosphere, what can I say.....the history of this place....takes you back to the Coal Mining heydays. Excellent place to Make your stopping point for the night. Big, well lit lot....and the nicest people you'll meet all day!!
This charming restaurant is one we have been driving by on the highway for years and wanted to stop, but were on a time constraint. Finally, we had the pleasure of getting to walk in and partake. We were immediately greeted. Our drink orders were taken, and our food order shortly after. They were very busy, which says a lot. We were not only impressed with the service, but with the numbers of diners, and the diversity in ages from too young to walk, to old enough to tell stories about the second world war. One small group even brought a board game with them and commenced to playing after their meal. Clearly this is a place where people become comfortable. Our food arrived hot and so delectable that we wanted to order more (but didn't). The restaurant is kept clean and ready for more diners. The restrooms are clean and well stocked. And when you are done, there is a store, just as charming, next door to peruse. We loved that the buildings are original and historic. So glad we finally got to stop.
We've been driving past this place for decades and never stopped, but we made the time on this trip. It was definitely worth it. The food was very good, home-style coming and it was done very quickly! The service was incredible, and we got to learn a lot about the place's origins. We'll for sure be stopping here again!
Really cool restaurant. Good was excellent and the service was above and beyond. I had the hot steak sandwich and it was delicious. Will be my new stop from now on between Abilene and Fort Worth. Special props to our waitress, I wish I could remember her name but she never let a glass get below half and was continously checking up on us. All the staff was excellent!!!!!!!!
Very home feeling atmosphere with great decor. Tables were cleaned, we were served within 5 minutes of walking in the door. The service was on top of refills and making sure everything was ok. The mushrooms Swiss was the best I have ever had and my cousin said the patty melt was amazing. 10/10 recommend
The food and service were great. The large chicken fried steak was actually just 2 chicken fry and it was very expensive. The rolls are amazing. I wasn't impressed with the fries, they weren't a "homemade fry", but every thing else was amazing!
This place is the best restaurant I have ever had. I have had lunch last week now breakfast today. Glad I don't live close I would be 500lb. And broke as much as I would eat here. Poh is the best waitress fast friendly and a big heart.
Excellent food if you're coming through Tubular Texas great place to eat. Truckers, if you don't, stop and eat here you're missing out on an excellent meal. Yes, there's plenty of parking for big rigs, Food was excellent. Everyone was very friendly.
Been wanting to stop here for for a lot of years and finally got the chance. Nice, historic feel, friendly people and the food was true southern comfort food. Had the meatloaf with green beans and mashed potatoes and it reminded me of my grandmother's cooking as a youngster.
Service was a little under par & could use a LOT of attention. At first it was ok but after they took our orders, we had to ask who ever we could flag down for drink result, silverware, napkins & pretty well everything else including the check. They were all sitting at a table visiting with each other like they all took a break at the same time or something. Food was decent enough. No complaints there really. Just the staff & service.
Great food and worth the drive and wait. Service was a bit slow but maybe not enough help to serve efficiently. Otherwise nice ambiance.
The wait staff here is always excellent and polite. This is a great place we stop on our travels. It is conveniently located right of 20 and is a great alternative to eating fast food. The menu is home cooking focused. There are salad options. The special the day comes with 2 sides and a dessert and is affordability priced.
No place like it. Not only are you eating at a historic monument, the food is delicious. Home style cooking at a fair price. Service is good. It's a must try if you've never been.
This was a last minute stop for a late.lunch off I 20. Wow I'm glad I stopped. This place had great food with plenty of parking and great service. This has a lot of character and history. Well priced plenty of seating. Clean and easy on and off the highway. Has inside and outside seating. A lot to look at inside to see the history of this old coal town. The restaurant has been there since 1971 and the town established in 1903. If your passing by and want a quick bite this is a place to check out.
Got a craving for a home-style meal served with a side of nostalgia? This is the place for you! The food is tasty and the staff is very friendly & attentive. We'll definitely stop here again!
Best hamburger I’ve ever had! Husband got the chicken fried steak plate. We will stop here again!
Historic restaurant location in Thurber Texas! Breakfast was one of the best and an incredible value for the Stephenville area! Wait staff kept our coffee cups filled and was extremely friendly and courteous. Wonderful vibe of this history making area!
Food was piping hot and service was fast! well flavored and fresh. Appetizer was the Texas Toothpicks (Ranch was great, Onions and Jalapenos were wonderfully crunchy and HOT) Main course was the Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich (one of the best I've had since coming to texas), Patty Melt (Perfect balance of beef and Rye Toast), and we shared a slice of Buttermilk Pie. My first time trying buttermilk pie and it was awesome! Overall A+ food and service. Atmosphere was quite quaint and really brought out a rustic historical feel. Truly felt homemade. Will be added to my list of must-stop places whenever driving through this area.
This is the best choice for great food, service and atmosphere and the kiddos can get some much needed activity in the grassy lot next door. There's plenty of parking for the bigger RVs and tractor trailers too. I ordered the large fried catfish that was enough to feed a family, side salad which comes with homemade croutons and the roasted cauliflower and broccoli. The cauliflower and broccoli was excellent as was everything else. Husband had the meatloaf with ketchup baked on top, side salad and green beans. All delicious. The meatloaf has green bell peppers in it, so I can't eat it, but it's a nice big slab and looks delicious. Our waitress was so very sweet and kept our drinks filled. She really knows her job and does it well. It's located in a historic building with all sorts of vintage tools and what-nots, including a sitz bathtub outside the bathrooms. This will definitely be a stop on our way back home.
Loved it. Super friendly, efficient service, extensive menu of what I would consider "country cooking" and all homemade. My son and I stopped in for a late dinner on the way back to Midland from DFW on the recommendation of a friend and it lived up to the hype and it is locally owned, which I prefer to give my business to when I can. This won't be my last stop here. My son had chicken tenders and I had the tacos. Both were moderately priced, but the portions were great. If you are travelling I20 and hungry, do yourself a favor and stop in.
My first time in town and my boyfriend brought me here for lunch. I had the catfish and okra, it was delicious, well seasoned and cooked. The service was great and the overall atmosphere was amazing. Definitely will be back next time I'm in town.
Have been wanting to stop here for many years. Until now anytime we have traveled through the area it just wasn't the time for stop for lunch or dinner. But this year things worked out just right. The old building makes for a great atmosphere. Friendly service. The food was excellent. Good range of menu options. Plate prices were reasonable and on par with what many non chain restaurants would charge. The noise level was a little high when we arrived but that was due to a table full of around 20 college age kids that were a bit loud but once they left the sound level dropped to a more relaxed atmosphere. Really enjoyed the visit.
So headed back home for turkey day and decided to stop for dinner at Smoke Stack in Thurber. Passed by this place all these years between Dallas and San Angelo but never stopped, wish we had done so sooner. Really good food and very nice staff. The burger had a bun they do from scratch, really good meatloaf and the small steak fingers is more like a good sized chicken fried steak cut in half. It was spoon tender. Kristina can attest the warm buttermilk pie was pretty darn good. If ever traveling I-20 and looking for a breakfast, lunch or dinner spot between Weatherford and Ranger along 20 stop by.
The food is amazingly delicious and the meatloaf sandwich can easily feed 2 people. Most importantly, the food actually has flavor, and I’m not talking over salted, the kind of seasoning you grew up with or make in your own home. Easy going and friendly environment in the refurbished brick building. We’ve been on the road for 2 days and walked in looking a little rough, yet no judgement at all. Felt comfortable right when we walked through the door. A place you can go in your Sunday best or just got off work clothes. Delicious. The staff is wonderful and kind. They will make sure you get fed exactly what you want.
My wife and I have driven past this restaurant many times over the years and we've always been a bit curious. We finally stopped in and were pleasantly surprised with very tasty food. I had the party melt, she had a chicken option. She was amazed at how tender the chicken was and the sauce or juices were fantastically seasoned. My patty melt was excellent. Both our plates came with onions, they were awesome. Bottom line, stop driving past this place on your way to Ft Worth or Dallas and get your grub on!!!
The chicken fried steak was very tender. The fried green beans were delicious! The meatloaf was better than his mommas but not better than mine lol. Everything could use more salt. The onion rings need more seasoning in the batter. But I did really appreciate cottage cheese as a side. The history is added character. Definitely worth the stop.
This place has been on my Bucket list for sometime, so today we made the stop as we Traveled from the Metroplex to West Texas. I have to say I wish I would have stopped all those other times we passed it. The food was amazing, huge portions and made to order. Staff were very friendly and it was very very clean. We will definitely be stopping there again.
Fantastic! If you are between Granbury and Abilene, you need to make this your stop for delicious food! The menu is filled with a wide variety of selections from the Full banquet to faster selections if you're on the road and on the go! I chose the "Greasy Cheesy" on the recommendation of my waitress! The burger was fantastic, served with crisp, delicious home-cooked french fries and thousand island dressing on the side. There were a wide variety of craft beers available, but I was driving a big trailer so I didn't want to drink alcohol. Speaking of parking, I'm towing a 40 foot trailer on this visit, so my options were limited for parking, but the rest-assured, there's plenty for even the biggest tractor trailer rigs. I have passed this way many times thinking I should always stop but I have always ended up at a fast food restaurant and always been disappointed. I will tell you my order came out within minutes! My waitress Kiana was very attentive, and equally considerate! The chocolate pie was incredible, don't miss that! The atmosphere inside was very homey, welcoming and warm! The restrooms were in immaculately clean. Everything together, this is definitely worth your time and your appetite! 100% Perfect dining experience!
What an amazing GEM tucked away. Such a cool place to eat at. Rode my bike and stopped in for some chicken and coffee. I highly recommend the mushroom chicken , and chicken fried steak! Amazing! And a very hearty serving if I may add. Coffee is good, they also have Dublin Soda pop ( first time trying ) . While I waited I wandered around and looked at all the cool sings, photographs and relics from the booming oil town from the past. Lots of cool stuff. Owners are great people too met them while I was waiting for my food.
This place is the bomb. They are Veteran friendly and very appreciated. Show your id and get a whopping 50% discount on food and drinks. They have the best food with large portions for the hungry and smaller portions for the smallest appetites. A diamond in the mine, a gem in the desert, this find keeps me stopping every trip. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to feast for small or large appetites. This place has an amazing selection of displayed antiques, heritage, and history. As you exit interstate I-20 and turn into this small village you enter another era of time. Don’t forget to visit the antique store, more like a museum next door.
Always a go to. Family dining with great service and tasty food the staff is very accommodating

Celebrated a family birthday. Had a great time and enjoyed the high quality food. Located in a very historical area once known for coal mining and high levels of immigration from Italy.

The food was decent but a little pricey for what you got. Staff was super friendly and the historical items in the restaurant added to the experience.
This place was beautiful absolutely no doubt but the wings did not taste fresh but overall gets a 4* due to the prices. Nobody should pay those prices for frozen tasting food.
Very nostalgic place with a nostalgic vibe. I took a panoramic picture of the restaurant setting to share with you. It has some old pictures of the area on the walls. People are friendly. The food is good & reasonably priced. They seem a bit short handed or I probably would have given them 5 stars. So, be patient with the staff.
We always try to stop here when traveling through. The history if the area is interesting (cafe has photos & you can learn more at the museum across I-20). The menu is robust, the service is friendly, and prices are reasonable. The food is pretty tasty but I found the pie a little heavier than I prefer. Family friendly with outdoor seating and lots to look at.
Large portions. Food was just ok. Server was not attentive and refused to let me make substitutions. Never came back to check on us. Brought bill before we asked for dessert. No offer to refill drinks.
Great stop for a meal. All the Texas favorites available the day we were there. The whole wheat bun on the hamburger and the roll with our chicken fried steak both tasted fresh and homemade. Friendly staff, good food fairly fast, clean restrooms and room to park our RV. We’ll be back!
Stopped here on a work trip on my way from Midland to Southlake. Looked pretty from the exterior and loved the actual smokestack across from the restaurant. Lots of room for parking, dining, and outside seating, with plenty of memorabilia on the walls. I tried the chicken fried chicken at the servers recommendation and was quite disappointed. I see on the menu it says it is covered in Panko breadcrumbs which could’ve been good, but there was just too much of it. I think it could be a great chicken fried chicken if it were in a normal batter, not panko. The chicken was very thin and I don’t think it was cooked well because the batter just kept sliding off of it. Might need to check your oil. Would probably stop here again but definitely not for chicken fried chicken. Better luck to me next time!
Very loud. Service was good. Lighting was horrible (super dim, most lighting was from the windows). The grits were tasty, but had no pepper in them. The breakfast taco was decent, though lacked a bit in seasoning. Needed some spicy salsa. The white gravy was severely lacking; looked like it had seasoning, but tasted like it had no seasoning. Eggs were severely overcooked (asked for soft scrambled, got very well done eggs). Definitely was not worth $65 ($67 with the scam CC fee).
It was definitely a great experience. The menu is small, but all comfort foods. Quality cooking. The chicken fried steak was hand breaded and hand pan-fried; not deep fried. The rolls are cooked Dutch oven style. The potato wedges were a great fused blend. For desert, the apple pie and buttermilk pie are highly recommended. The ambiance is in an old mercantile building built in 1920.

I have wanted to stop and eat here for many years when traveling by but it hasn’t worked out…until now. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was good but the best part and biggest surprise……
After passing by this place countless times we decided to stop because the reviews seem good and the history seemed interesting. I was a bit dissapointed after trying however, as the chicken fried chicken was flavorless and the serving size of the massed potatoes was laughable. My wife did give stellar reviews to the onion rings, and found her steak to be average. Normally I prefer these type of stand alone restaraunts, non-chain and reflecting the history of the area, but honestly I would prefer Texas Roadhouse over this, I'm not sure I would give it another go. As for atmosphere, I probably got unlucky and was sat next to a large crowd vocally in political debate, which is their right l, but was a little much for me. The photographs and the smokestack itself are nice.

Very interesting experience. The food was pretty good, but not worth $63. When we arrived, not many customers were there. We were sitting for a good 15 minutes before someone even came to our table. Customer service can really make or break an experience. Your staff wasn’t very friendly or welcoming at ALL. Unfortunately, we probably won’t be back.
Filthy rock parking lot full of dirt and silt. Billowing winds ensure your covered in dirt. Don't care about their oil business history. Food is - mediocre.
