Overall this was a really great place. The food was very good and I really recommend the Kung Pao chicken. The combination plates are very well priced at $8.99 for most if not all that I remember. The foil chicken was most and flavorful. The place itself is small and could get crowded if it got busy but it was empty. It was pretty clean overall. You have to order at the register then they bring the food to you. Menu was well organized. Would like to come back to try more

I ordered over the phone for Pickup: Beef Vegetable Stir Fry and Chicken Fried Rice. Tasted good just as I expected. Only thing I don't like is the typical chinese restaurant puffy beef meat. Their chicken meat is not puffy, so it tasted better. If you cannot eat oyster sauce (e.g. due to allergies to crustaceans), make sure you tell them so and to substitute oyster sauce with soy sauce for the fried rice and substitute brown sauce with white sauce for the stir frys. That's what I did, and the nice lady who took my order made sure the food was done to my request. Pricing is good.

I absolutely love going here. The amount of food you get for the price is like a steal and it tastes so good. I am always getting comments that the food smells so good from my coworkers. The lady at the counter is so nice. She always calls me when my food is done. Today I got lost due to google maps taking me the wrong way and when I called she gave me directions and was very adamant about finding me to give me my food. I don’t even get leftovers because my daughter finishes it off when I get home. Favorite food to get for lunch.

Hands down some of the best Chinese food I've ever had in the 209 area!

I’ve been going to this place since I was 16 years old, I’m almost 50 now! I’m picky about my Chinese food and this place never disappoints! The quality and quantity for the price has always been outstanding! I actually have a tattoo that was created by one of the ladies who used to work here years ago! The people are amazing here, I drive an hour and a half to get there now days and it’s worth the drive since there’s nothing to compare it to where I live now!

This place has been open for many many years I believe they have had different owners but their food is good and the portions are Big in my house my 2 daughters and I can eat from 1 meal.

China Gourmet has the best takeout in town. The food is very tasty and the combo meals have more food than one person can eat. Portions are very generous. Too bad there is not much room to dine in.

Good middle of the road Chinese food good service friendly people the food is always fresh they make bomb garlic chicken and I understand their orange chicken is quite good as well. If you dine in you get soup to go with your dinner if you take out you do not they make a really good hot and sour soup if you need your sinuses cleared that would be the place to go yummy delicious. The Price is Right the location is okay and I usually get it to go. One side last time I was there a gentleman asked for ketchup The Kooks were all in shock and surprise and had none in house so if you want ketchup we need to bring you're own.

I ordered this a few weeks ago but ordered all combo meals.. so this time I just got the sides separately -i guess I didn't notice that the chicken or beef ordered alone comes with white rice. So when I got my food delivered I get a few containers of food a then a few Styrofoam containers with my chicken sides in it. But it was mostly rice.more than half of it. Under the chicken and everywhere. Not cool

First timer food is ok if your craving Chinese

Service is friendly but the food is not very good. The garlic chicken is supposed to be fried and crunchy but it is just soggy like it was heated in a microwave. My family has been eating here for almost 20yrs, it is very sad to see this happen to the quality of their food =(

I understand we're all dealing with inflation. But the same exact orders I've been getting for many years have not only doubled (or more) in price - they've shrunk in size significantly. By at least a 3rd of what it was just a couple years ago. Wouldn't mind the price increase as much if we got a fair amount of food in return. I'll continue to support the restaurant because I do love the food. We just won't be ordering it as often and we'll have to cut some of our long time favorites from our orders. 5 star food with a 2 star reduction for cost per food amount

I ordered two combo at the opening and wish I hadn't.I went thru grubhub and that was ok but it was an employee from there??? The whole meal was a disaster! The rice and chow mein was very very dry.The noodles looked like they were not all seasoned the barbecue pork was dry and hard.The only good thing was the fried prawns and fried Wong tong, I was very disappointed, it's usually good, and it's not fair to pay a employee, to do the delivery even if they are doing grubhub it's not right.I felt the morning order was from the previous evening.I will not order at opening.

China gourmet has always been my go to for great Chinese food..yesterday, after bringing my food home and getting me a big plate of that china gourmet goodness going I noticed that the food changed dramatically.(not quite for the better) This was not the Chinese food I have come to love after all these years. Well after a bit of digging I found out that china gourmet has new owners.. what will I do?!?!?! Please bring back the old cook!!! 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😥💔

WARNING!! If you are from out of town and staying at a hotel or motel DO NOT ORDER YOUR DINNER ONLINE!! The online company that is providing service to the restaurant doesn't have the option for ordering plates and utensils for your dinner. Even though we listed the delivery address and room number from a local motel we were not provided these basic items for a $30 dinner for two. Thankfully there was a Jack in the box 4 blocks away where we were able to get bowls and plastic forks which allowed us to eat our dinner. On the good side of this experience even though our food was luke warm by the time we were able to eat our dinner the food quality was exceptional. I called the restaurant and voiced my displeasure about the missing utensils but was told that if I wanted that included with my delivery I should have called my order in over the phone. My 1st visit to Modesto hasn't been that impressive but hopefully this review will help someone else to avoid this situation.

Food is typical for Chinese food in a strip mall, nothing special. Brown pile of fried stuff smothered in sauce, probably out of a bottle. Restaurant is as run down inside as the rest of the neighborhood, meaning cleanliness is an issue. If I had only ordered delivery I would think nothing of it, but seeing the restaurant makes me concerned about food handling practices. Staff seems friendly towards regulars. Not rude to others, but disinterested. Not recommended.

I have eaten at this place several times. The fried rice is good as is the chow mein. However, do not order ANY egg foo young, chicken, shrimp, not any. It is not prepared correctly with big chunks of regular onion in it. Plus the sauce is more like southern chicken gravy with a little soy sauce added for effect. I don't know why I have it another chance. One other thing. Their spring rolls are mush inside! Nope. Not going back. The service and tea were fine.

I used to eat it here quite a bit and it used to be good but the last year or so they've been really bad. I ate some food from them last night and it made everyone who ate it sick and it isnt the first time, the last two times we got sick so im done with this place. No more chances

I have been going here since I was a child and have always liked the food and service. Throughout the years and owner changes, there was always a good rapport between my family and owners. Today, I went in and put an order in, Normally whoever works the front counter will give me an approx. time my food will be ready (15 min or 20 min). Today there were 2 other customers in the restaurant, so after placing my order, i kindly asked the lady, "How long will it be"? The lady turned around and told me "I don't know, maybe 10 min. but who knows" and just left. Meanwhile as she took orders over the phone, she provided other customers with a time, but it was too much for her to find out for a customer standing in the store. She was also sitting in the corner eating when not answering the phone or helping a walk in customer like myself, which is not professional nor was she wearing gloves as she handled other peoples food because she was eating. I will go back to China Gourmet, but will turn around if she is working the front counter and come back another day.

A lot of the food is fairly tasty and it is dirt cheap so with that in mind it's about a 2

We ordered a family of 4 dinner on father's day for delivery. Orange and sweet and sour chicken tasted old and leftover; prawns were rubbery and the kung pao chicken must have been the ,"last of" because it had all the hot veggies and could hardly be eaten. Within an hour all of us were sick - diarrhea and vomiting. Do not recommend this place!

Either they have new owners or they have new cooks because the last 2 times going there the food has been horrible! I always order the Almond Chicken combo and both times I got what looked like a tablespoon size of almond chicken and it consisted of nothing but cabbage, maybe one or two pieces of chicken, no baby corn, zucchini or scant other vegetables! They have also switched from sliced to whole almonds which is fine they taste good. This last time I noted on my online order to add extra veggies to the Almond chicken....I guess they consider cabbage as extra veggies cause that's all it was! And the chicken this time was a only few shreds of chicken nothing like the chunks they used to put in it. Also ordered spring rolls and those were horrible too. They used to be my favorite place to go but not anymore I'll be looking for another restuarant.

ordered for delivery took 1hr and 30 min to receive food, which was cold. rice and noodles were very bland orange chicken and garlic chicken were too salty nobody could eat it. cream cheese wontons barely had any cream cheese and were over cooked...overall don’t waste your money here it’s not worth it.

I had eaten at China Gourmet since 1992. I will not be returning. I don't know what happened to the food. The rice smelled bad the last several times and it isn't made the same. It tastes like it's close to being spoiled. It's completely different. My sweet and sour chicken or pork clearly is not from the day I ordered it. You think because you pour sweet and sour sauce on it it will soften. Nope. It will not. Not only is the meat hard to chew but the outside is never ever crispy. It's hard as well. The BBQ pork used to be delicious and tender. Not anymore. I am so dissapointed. I will not return. I kept going back thinking maybe it was my imagination. Take pride in quality like you used to. Quantity is not important if quality isn't there.

Personally, it is the worst place I've tested. First of all when we entered their employees were eating and they did not stop looking at us like weird bugs the truth we felt somewhat uncomfortable but we did not give importance. the truth was we were hungry and only what we wanted was to eat a rich spongy and hot rice as well as a pasta with its vegetables seasoned to the point. but it was just a dream. They served us a rice that looked like dry plastic worse than a stone and unpleasant taste and the chaw me ridiculous cold and only had carrot and onion is a damn joke? and the shrimp were dripping in oil omg it was a horrible thing. I did just stop and leave your food. it's as if I had thrown away my 20 dollars in the trash😡

I don’t usually leave review but this time it’s diferente.. i came here because I rmeber the food being delicious but this time it was a big disappointment the worst Chinese food I had ever had.. the food had no flavor except for the garlic chicken that was salty no flavor but salty the chicken skewers where a thin long slice of falcon less fried chicken and the teriyaki sauce was disgusting. I asked for hot sauce to see if I could save it and they don’t have hot sauce will definitely not be returning.

Sadly after eating there since I was a kid...I will not eat there again! What a waste of money also.

China Gourmet was once my go to place to get food, but I have become increasingly disappointed in the food quality & turtle slow service. The BBQ pork is hit & miss and if you are lucky you won't get a bunch of fatty meat. The orange chicken and prawns are soggy and taste like they were reheated in a microwave. DO NOT order delivery you will wait 2 hours and receive cold food! I gave them another shot and ordered online for take out this evening. I placed my order at 5:40 pm for 6:15 pm pick up. Here it is 7:10 pm and my food is STILL not ready. They provide no communication regarding any potential delays and just look at your dumbfounded when you ask what is going on. Tonight's hour long wait for food that was ordered before hand was the last straw. Good-Bye China Gourmet you have lost a long-term customer.
