Absolutely amazing place! Friendly staff, excellent service, nice music and cozy interior! Food is fresh, and portions are big. Also there are lots of parking spots, even in Friday afternoon. Definitely will come here again and recommend this place to our friends! Takoyaki are great here!

Food was really good! This will be my sushi spot from now on! Although I would say the building is super small and very limited on seating so must of the time there’s a wait a time.

I can’t say enough great things about Modesto Sukiyaki! This place has quickly become my new favorite spot—10/10! A coworker recommended it to me, and it absolutely did not disappoint. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, with beautiful presentation. The ramen was rich and comforting, with a perfect balance of flavors. The chicken katsu was crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned—truly one of the best I’ve had. The service was equally amazing—attentive, friendly, and fast. The staff made the whole experience so enjoyable. If you’re looking for incredible food and outstanding service, I highly recommend checking this place out. I’ll definitely be coming back again and again! And we were treated to this amazing dessert!

This place has some of the best Japanese food that I’ve ever tried. The rolls are insane and the tempura ice cream dessert is worth traveling to from New Jersey.

The food actually feels like if it was made in Japan itself. Super good food and the staff is really friendly and overall a nice vibe. 10/10!

Enjoyed the atmosphere and the servers were attentive. The manager/owner was engaging with his customers and present with his employees, it’s always nice to see. I especially enjoyed the Nigiri. The roll I ordered was delicious too, but I’d probably suggest going lighter in the Unagi sauce.

Delicious roll! A big compliment to the chef. I appreciated that rolls had generous amount of fish. Rice is fluffy, fresh. Everything we ordered tasted delicious!

Modesto Sukiyaki was a solid spot! The food was pretty good overall, with a nice surprise of vegan sushi on the menu. The appetizer gyōza were delicious, perfectly crisp and flavorful. I tried the spicy miso soup too, definitely packs a punch. Pro tip: don’t wear white while eating this ramen

Walked in and ordered to go, the staff was friendly and the service fairly quick. Tried the peanut chicken with rice, miso soup, and a small salad. The bluefin o toro is delicious and is a must! The sauce on the peanut chicken is thick but tasty. Anything fried is heavily breaded. Overall Liked the sesame chicken the most. They only use thigh meat for all their chicken dishes. The sukiyaki roll is very good just a litttle spicy. The California roll was average but priced well. The prices are reasonable and the place seemed popular. A quaint spot with a good amount of seating, all indoors. Would highly recommend!

Upon entering Modesto Sukiyaki, the ambiance struck a delightful balance between elegance and comfort, thanks to its dark theme accented with soft lighting. The welcoming smile from the staff added a touch of warmth, although the chill in the air was noticeable. Despite being winter, the restaurant's AC seemed to be in full swing, a small note for future visits to bring along a jacket. The restaurant, cozy in size, had an intimate atmosphere that was unexpectedly quiet for an early evening, with just a few patrons besides us. Its smallness contributed to a more personalized and relaxed dining experience. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant neon sign highlighting the day's specials - an array of tempting choices like tempura soft shell crab and blue fin o-toro. However, my sushi craving was insatiable. We started our culinary journey with some classic saki bomb drinks, accompanied by the comforting warmth of miso soup and the delightful crunch of gyoza. For our main course, we chose the Crazy Tuna Roll and the Volcano Roll. Each roll was a masterpiece of flavor and texture. The Crazy Tuna Roll, with its spicy tuna and crispy asparagus, offered a satisfying crunch in every bite, while the Volcano Roll was an explosion of tastes, combining the heat of jalapeño with the richness of cream cheese, topped off with eel and crazy sauce. It was a delightful balance of spicy, creamy, and crunchy elements, making the Volcano Roll particularly memorable. What surprised me the most was the affordability of our meal. Despite the high quality and generous portions of the sushi, our total bill was under $60, making Modesto Sukiyaki not just a culinary delight but also a budget-friendly option. This restaurant proved to be a fantastic choice, offering a cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and prices that leave you pleasantly surprised. It's a spot I'd gladly recommend to anyone in Modesto looking for a great sushi experience without breaking the bank.

I really enjoyed dining here for dinner. I really enjoyed the Sukiyaki! It was very flavorful. Jovita had Beef Teriyaki which she enjoyed. For our beverages I had a Sapporo Beer and Jovita had hot tea. It was a disappointment to be served tea with a teabag and not in a small pot as one would expect at any Asian restaurant. The people here are very friendly.

Was craving some katsu curry and found Modesto Sukiyaki. The fish tasted fresh and the plating was rather appealing. The Katsu curry was very good and definitely hit the spot. I will be back to try more of their menu for sure!

Modern Japanese food that looks and tastes pretty good. Interesting to see some of the "fusion" rolls with Italian or Mexican ingredients but not sure how the taste works out. The Seared Tuna Appetizer was great, and if adding a little bit of sauce--esp since there is salad--it works be even better. The Black Thunder Roll was pretty good with reasonably-sized eel pieces on top, but the asparagus inside the roll was a bit of a surprise to me, and I think avocado or cucumber might be a better choice. The Pork Katsu Curry was also pretty good; the pork cutlet was done nicely, though the curry could be a little more spicy for us--which will add to the aroma too.

The food was delicious although service a little slow with one chef and one server. The soft shell crab appetizer was very tasty and crispy. The sushi rolls were large, beautiful to look at and wonderful to eat. The sukiyaki was flavorful with the perfect amount of saltiness. I will definitely go again .

It was an okay place to dine. Note: Rated to what we had for dinner. Prompt service & food delivery. Menu :sukiyaki, salmon non cooked roll, chicken Panko box, chicken katsu,& beef curry, all with rice. And appetizer.oops forgot the name of it. Anyway the Mrs. said her sukiyaki was okay nothing special. The kids katsu and my panko was decent. But not much qty. I still felt hungry afterwards. The roll was not to my liking. The salmon was mashed together, not sure if this is normal. 1st time ordering it. All in all a decent place, but there are other establishments better suited. As always, post your experiences wherever your palate takes U.

We went as a group of four for dinner. We ordered sushi only. Service was good, sushi chefs didn't really care much for conversation. Rice is a little soggy for me. I expected a lot more from them because the reviews were all pretty solid, but I was disappointed. Sushi was plain. Their ponzu sauce was really good though, other than that, probably won't be going back.

We arrived at the Restaurant at 3:37pm we were a party of three adults with a toddler was told it would be a 30 min wait; had no problem placed our phone number and name to be called while we waited we walked around the plaza. Once we received the call at 3:59 pm the hostess cleared the table and placed a high chair for my son which was great. Intimate Setting: The restaurant has limited seating, which contributes to a more personal and intimate dining Then we waited for another roughly additional 5 MIN; waiter brought in plates napkins and TWO sets of utensils for TWO of the THREE adults to use without bringing in any chopsticks ( we had seen all other tables have them without even requesting them). waiter did not even ask if we wanted anything to drink or better yet GIVEN US THE MENU so we could order our food. so for the time we waited we used our phones to get a rough idea of what they offer and see what we would like to order. Once we were given our menu it was an additional 10 min wait;once those were set she FINALLY asked if there was anything that we would like to order to drink; we ended up ordering a water and two hot green teas. after we had placed our order the hostess let us know it is a bit of a wait since there was only one Itamae in right now and the wait is a bit longer then expected, not a problem. during our dining another Itamae arrived shortly. once food arrived it had a beautiful presentation with ambient flavor to match each dish. throughout our meal NO ONE checked in on us until roughly 45 mins in, we had asked for two additional waters (which those were never delivered to our table even after we were given the check) once our waiter came back for the second time she refilled my ONE water again we asked for waters for the other two adults at this time and placed our to GO Orders. I had ordered two additional sushi rolls to go and Escolar (Butterfish) SASHIMI but the waitress had placed in the order as NIGIRI two completely different things (this was seen after i had paid gotten home and placed my child to sleep we were just so tired from the wait time.) for the TO GO ORDERS we waited an additional 45 MIN even though the hostess claimed it would be around 20 MIN, when that time passed my husband had left the restaurant to go change our child's diaper in the car since the restuarants bathroom did not have a changing table to which took him 15 minutes to go back in to the restaurant and at this time we had already waited 35 MIN, when we received our order an additional 10 minutes had passed we were in the 45min mark at this time. for appetizers we ordered Veggie Tempura, california rolls and Spicy Edamame as for the meal we ordered; + Sukiyaki The dish arrives in a traditional pot, steam rising with that unmistakable sweet-savory aroma of a classic warishita broth--a rich blend of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Every bite is a different experience. You get the snap of the fresh napa cabbage and onions, the earthy, meaty chew of the shiitake mushrooms, and the silky "slurp" of the glass noodles that have turned dark and flavorful from absorbing the soup. Black Tunder Roll Filling: The core of the roll features shrimp tempura, fresh asparagus, and cream cheese. +Crunchy Eel Roll The Filling: It is built with a core of unagi (BBQ eel), shrimp, cream cheese, and avocado. The Crunch: Unlike standard rolls, this entire roll is deep-fried, then topped with tempura flakes, onion, and sesame seeds for maximum crispness. Garnish: It is finished with a pop of texture from tobiko (fish roe). King Fish Roll The Core: The interior of the roll features a blend of three popular raw fish--Salmon, Maguro (tuna), and Hamachi (yellowtail)--paired with crisp cucumber for added texture. Toppings: The roll is finished with slices of creamy avocado and a garnish of tobiko (flying fish roe). + Tonkotsu Ramen (a rich comforting velvety broth) The dish is served as a complete meal with several traditional toppings

OK place. Sushi is ok, nothing special compared to Osaka in Modesto. Miso Ramen is ok, the cabbage on the Ramen do go well, the minced meat needs flavor... example Nago Ramen makes excellent minced meat that makes the broth very flavorful... not here. The broth is OK, the Noodles is OK. Is it one of those places that makes you come back again, not really. Is more of place you go because is close by and convenience, not bad but not excellent. Tea $4 just a cup... water isn't expensive, so a teapot presentation is the way to go. Solid 3 stars place.

Way overpriced and subpar quality when it comes to non sushi items. The Japanese curry dish was beyond unacceptable; the sauce tasted like bad American gravy; the kind made from a powder mix. Their menu is not very descriptive; doesn’t give you the option of grilled vegetables vs tempura. The teriyaki entrees just generic and unremarkable; I’ve tasted better from Lean Cuisine at one fifth of the price. Sushi is good but overall there are better places for Japanese food in Modesto, specifically the spot on Sylvan & Coffee.

I wanted to like it because of the reviews. Unfortunately, the taste of the sushi was not it. No flavor at all. Very pricey. The customer service was very good and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very pleasant. But I would not recommend based on the taste of the food, sorry.
