Opinions de Adyar Ananda Bhavan New York
Came across this vegetarian authentic South Indian restaurant on first avenue during one of my walks around NYC. From the name of the restaurant to it’s appearance, the food, the style of serving , everything in there takes you down the memory lane. The only jolt you get into reality is the price. It is pricey considering Indian food standards but not pricey considering it is in the city. However, it is totally worth every penny. The place is super-clean, the ambience good with Indian music playing in the back ground and the service good. I ordered the idli -Vada sambar platter and the filter coffee and I must say that it was one of the best I have eaten. The filter coffee was on the mark. So, kudos to these guys for maintaining such a nice and authentic place without cutting corners!
Wide variety of south-indian dosas, authentic chutneys and sambar. Quantity worth the price and fulfiling. Auto-included 15% gratuity in our check (group of 4).
What can I say, other than WOW! The food is so flavorful. The portion sizes are hefty. This place is definitely a must if you love Southern Indian Food. They are closed between 3PM and 5PM. We had 2 different Thali's and would come back again. Keep doing what you do!
Highly recommend for people craving nice South Indian food. Nice idlies and pondicherry masala dosa is a must try and you can finish your meal with a strong filter coffee.
When I used to live in NYC, I came here regularly. So, on a recent trip back, I sought this place out. Just as good as I remember with large portions of delicious food. I recommend the Pondicherry Masala Dosa.
Fresh and tasty vegetarian food. Although its a South Indian restaurant but the North Indian options are also really good. The place is very clean, friendly staff, peaceful, plenty of seating and menu options. Definitely recommend it.
It was surprising to find an AUTHENTIC SOUTH INDIAN RESTAURANT in NYC. I literally had “BACK TO HOME” feel after a long period. I would recommend to try their South Indian Thali and Dosa’s. The food preparation and presentation was awesome. Friendly and warm welcoming gesture from Staff. Finished off with their excellent Masala Chai that had perfect texture and flavor.
This place has been our mainstay for south Indian food in NYC over the years. After a hiatus of several years due to the pandemic, we revisited A2B for indoor dining and greatly enjoyed ourselves. The idli vada combo, the Rasam, and the butter masala Dosa were excellent as always. The Rava Masala dosa felt a tad chewy (not as crisp as I remembered) but overall, we were very pleased with the experience. The Gulab Jamun was a nice way to round out the meal. This place is worth a visit if you're craving South Indian food in NYC! Update: Went back for more great food! The experience was great, even though they had issues with sending the food to the wrong tables, which led to longer than expected wait times. Hope they resolve this quickly! We had the Rocket Dosa, the Bullet Dosa (dosa with Pav Bhaji Masala inside it), and the South Indian Thali. All were excellent!
Second time at Adyar Ananda Bhavan and had an excellent meal. For appetizers we shared idli and vada combo and it was delicious. For mains we got ghee masala dosa and rava onion chilli dosa. Both were excellent. We asked for some dosa podi on the side (gun powder masala mixed with ghee). Way better than Saravana Bhavan. Enjoyed our meal. Ended up trying utthapam and was amazing as well.
This has been one of our favorite dosa spots for a very long time. I give it a 5 star for the food but I do think there were a few things they could improve on and that's why overall I gave it a 4 star. Food: We ordered the dosas, I asked for them to be spicy and told them we actually want it spicy and unfortunately they just didn't do it. For the chili rava dosa we asked for extra chili and honestly we could barely see any chili in the dosa to begin with. The sambar was really good but needed a little bit of salt. I loved all the different chutneys and one of them was a bit on the spicer side. My husband got the uttapam and he said he really liked it. We usually get their cocktail idili here as it's one of our favorites, I highly recommend you try it. This time we got the cauliflower manchurian, it was fine, an average dish. Service: We came for an early dinner and it seemed like they might have been short staffed. We didn't have to wait long to be seated or get our food but for ordering and other basic service needs like refilling water, it would take a long time. Price: The food portions are very big here and considering this, the prices are very reasonable. Ambiance: This is a fairly casual restaurant but comfortable. Insta: @TheShahLALand
Great food! Hands down the best Indian on the UES if you are vegetarian/very vegan friendly and they even offer Gluten Free & Nut Free options. However, the service is extremely slow and almost non-existent. Also they have weird quirks like an extra charge for using credit card, no sharing and take out is $1 extra charge for containers. Hence taking down 1 star from my review. Even with their weird quirks, the food is so delicious and since I live in the neighborhood, I keep going back. Just don’t expect 5 star service and bring cash. Their food is so good that you will forget the bad service and their weird quirks.
Pretty average Indian Restaurant for what we ate and paid . Agree it’s NYC but other similar places on Lexington Ave are 10 times better than this! Dosa chutneys were served like tiny bit of tasters , Sambhar didn’t have any taste and heavily watered ! We ordered the Paneer Special Dosa , the paneer was served inside the dosa with the potatoes mix served on the side ! Only good thing was the filter coffee which was made well but overall one restaurant that I won’t be coming back soon!
Very slow service. They open pretty late, but even then many dishes weren't ready or available. Uthappam, ghee dosa, idli-vada sambar was good. Mysure Rava Dosa, and Madurai Malli was very thick and unnecessarily heavy. We ordered coffee twice; they did not get it the second time. Overall, I had a very average experience.
This place is complete knockoff version of the authentic A2B. It’s far from the original. We ordered the idli and madhu vada plate, and the Sambar and chutney clearly indicate that it’s not authentic. The masala dosa was quite flat, and the potato masala was bland. I never thought the typical South Indian dish could be so poorly prepared in a supposed to be authentic place.
I live like 2 blocks from this place, and have been going there for a while, but this place has completely degraded the food quality, and the service has always been the worse anyway as they don’t care. First of all 4 chutney/sambhar slots, they gave us only 2, rest 2 were empty and I ordered mysore masala dosa, it dosa has no seasoning and it hey just gave us boiled potatoes inside. I asked them to change and add more seasoning, they were so rude, and told us to add the salt, seriously! I had been going there for a while but now they have reached to a limit. Won’t recommend anymore
Used to be amazing, like the best South Indian food in the city. The older Indian man/uncle that runs that restaurant has become miserable. As I live a block away I have been to this place over 50x, and every time he becomes worse and worse. I don’t even like walking past the restaurant because I don’t want to see him.
We visited A2B and had a very disappointing experience. After waiting nearly 20 minutes for someone to take our order, we asked for a chili paratha and two coffees. Being a group of four, we were then told that such an order could not be served for dine-in and would only be available to-go—information shared only after the long wait. The place also appeared severely understaffed. We proceeded to order coffee to-go, which took another 10 minutes to arrive. The coffee was watery, poorly prepared, and tasted as if it was made without any real experience and charged around $5.00 for each incl all (Taxes and Card processing fee). When we inquired about the delay, instead of addressing the issue, the staff chose to explain how coffee is made. Overall, this was frustrating and unacceptable service.
Good food (not great though). Awful service - They had no ice for water, Sides are all extra, some sides aren't available even if we are willing to pay extra, and extra wide price was $4 on menu but we were charged $6. The server got us a slightly different order and argued with us that I have the order wrong. Consider a different place.
Terrible and the worst restaurant on the planet. I ordered Idli and vada combo - Idli was hard and vada even worse fried twice, once a few hours ago and once when I ordered. Was stale.this was priced at $9. Left the vada Second order was masala Dosa which was terrible with a few drops of coconut chutney and the dosa was made like a knife hurting the tongue. When I asked why there are few drops of chutney, the answer is I can order extra chutney! This is unhygienic place with the serving staff smelling of sweat! This place should be closed by NYC as unhygienic place serving stale food. Total spent $25 on lousy food ! Worst place on the planet
Worst staff I’ve ever encountered — zero manners and absolutely no professionalism. I simply requested a dish to be made less spicy, and instead of accommodating (or even politely declining), they outright refused to serve me. This is all when I had my little one with me who was really hungry. The staff was extremely rude and dismissive for no reason. Restaurants are supposed to provide hospitality, but this place clearly doesn’t understand the basics of customer service. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Avoid at all costs. What a lie - your staff has a big communication issue She very clearly asked if she can add tomato ketchup To which i said yes After everything said and done i said i’ll pay for the so called paneer fried also but i want masala dosa And the staff simply said no - we cant serve you any further How disrespectful one can be One star forever
DO NOT RECOMMEND! (ALSO DO NOT MISS OUT THE REPLY FROM THE RESTAURANT… THEY LAUNCHED A PERSONAL ATTACK ON MY CHARACTER AND INTENTIONS JUST COZ I GAVE HONEST FEEDBACK ALONG WITH PICTURES. I TRY OUT MANY RESTAURANTS REGULARLY AND POST REVIEWS ON GOOGLE AND ON YELP WHERE I HAVE POSTED 350 PLUS REVIEWS, SO LAST THING I WOULD WANT IS $10 REFUND/ FREE MEAL. I AM ALWAYS HONEST WITH MY FEEDBACK AND IT’S THE FIRST TIME A RESTAURANT HAS BEEN SO RUDE, DEFENSIVE, DISRESPECTFUL AND A COMPLETE GASLIGHTER ) This place used to be good, one of the better South Indian spots around, but honestly, they’ve completely lost their standard. I’ve ordered from them several times, hoping it was just a one-off mistake, but every time something goes wrong. One time, they sent just one idli instead of two. This time, the idli was straight-up uncooked. The worst part is When I’ve called to explain, they don’t really take ownership. Instead of apologizing or offering to make it right, they get defensive and try to justify the mistake. They’ll say, ‘Next time we’ll do better’ but that next time never improves. Honestly it’s a very juvenile response from someone in restaurant business. No refund, no replacement, no accountability. It’s frustrating and disappointing, especially from a place I used to like. I’m attaching photos of what I received. This isn’t how food should be sent out. Definitely not ordering again.
