Opinions de Hanoi House New York
I love this spot, it’s a great place for northern vietnamese cuisine and they do it well! My favorite is their take on bun cha, it’s very reminiscent of my time in hanoi— the broth is super umami and delicious, the fish sauce to sugar ratio is great. i also love their pho, the noodles are cooked perfectly and the broth is amazing, the kitchen will split a bowl into two for you if you ask! their vietnamese coffee is also delightful, and the egg cream coffee is sweet and delicious too! can’t wait to be back soon.
On First Time Visit, I was very impressed by the Food and Service. Contemporary High quality Vietnamese Cuisine. The waiter was incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic. I ordered the House Special Pho Dac Biet. Perfectly cooked rice noodles in Umami Broth. Very High quality Beef and the Roasted Bone Marrow and curlers were Fantastic, WORTH THE WAIT! Pickled Fresh Garlic and Hot&Sour charred Chili sauce balances the Pho Dish. The waiter recommended a Egg Coffee, pressure foamed egg white with condensed milk and honey over fresh brewed hard pressed coffee, pairs well with spicy food and beef.☕️👍 Savory, aromatically well balanced dining experience. Friday night is busy so make sure you get a reservation, this place is popular! Get the Marrow!!!
Very busy and small restaurant (make a reservation), but my group got a table in the back which was nice. For appetizers I would highly recommend the Papaya pig ear salad and honey lemongrass chicken wings. We all got the house special pho and the brisket was melt in the mouth delicious. The broth was clean and had a strong beefy flavour but wish I had some chilies and lime to add to it.
Imagine, if you will, the rainiest morning NYC has seen in months, followed by a hectic day of work weighed down by a meeting you’ve been having stress dreams about, followed by RUNNING from the Astor Place stop to be on time for your reservation; meanwhile your friend’s commuter train broke down on the way home from Westchester so she’s had a nightmare 3 hour commute back and is running late as well (but not running, just speedwalking, bc she’s just done a round of egg retrieval hormone shots so she doesn’t want to get ovarian torsion); and then your other friend is SO patiently waiting for you both to arrive but she’s on antibiotics so she’s real hungry but waiting to line her stomach w food so that she can take the necessary meds. This is the headspace you must put yourself in to understand me when I say I nearly wept when, after munching on some crunchy spring rolls and saucy spicy cauliflower, the pure and wise staff of Hanoi House brought us TWO LITTLE TREATS (papaya salad pig ear salad and morning glory) on the house!!!! And then due to our overwhelmed joy and what I presume to be a diligent and loving pho broth brewing process we proceeded to have the warmest and savoriest bowls of oxtail and brisket noodle soup ever. Look I don’t know if we just appeared especially bedraggled or if they were literally psychic or if it was just a random act of kindness but suffice it to say that we will be telling our friends about the time we were blessed by the HHA (Hanoi House Angels) for at least the next year and a half. Also I could’ve had 10 salted lime sodas. Also my breath is still rank with all the yummy pickled garlic I scarfed like a deeply depressed vampire. Also they brought over sharing bowls without us asking. it’s the little things that made this Hanoi House…a Hanoi Home 🫶
Hanoi House has been on my list of places to try for a long time. It did not disappoint. The service was fantastic and friendly. The cocktails were original. The pho was delicious. It was a great meal and I can’t wait to go back and explore more of the menu. Dining in is currently limited to outdoor seating on the heated patio. Bundle up and have some hot tea.
In our Quest for the Best of NYC, we are looking for the best Vietnamese food. We may have found it. Hanoi House has good service, an interesting and curated wine list and superb food. We’ve eaten at Việt restaurants around the world and except for Vietnam itself, we usually scoff at their efforts. Not Hanoi House. The Shaking Beef is delicious and ingeniously served with bone marrow. The Papaya salad is served with pig ears, usually reserved for finger food for drinking or sandwiches. They were fried, not grilled (as they usually are) and seasoned with a perfect mix of spices. We will keep looking for the Best of Việt food in NYC but right now this is the winner.
Got house special beef pho with the bone marrow and WOW. The broth was soooo delicious, the meats were tender and the marrow delicious. This is a winter cozy classic
I always felt like NYC lacked great Vietnamese options but Hanoi House and a few other restaurants that have opened in recent years have started to change that. It’s always been hard for me to find Bun Cha on menus so I was psyched when I saw it on the Hanoi House menu. It is one of my favorite dishes and they do it so well with high quality ingredients and both grilled pork and pork patties. The Bánh mì sandwich was also delicious with fresh ingredients. Their cocktail menu was also cool. I got the Queenie Watermelon cocktail which had a really unexpected flavor with the sesame. I also got the colada which was sweet and delicious. The service was really friendly and quick and I would definitely go back again and recommend to friends looking for great Vietnamese.
I am an out of towner and my friend (local to NYC) brought me to Hanoi House because I was craving Asian food. To my surprise, I had the best experience there and the best beef phõ in my life, I liked it so much that i had to come back to next day to enjoy it again, my trip to new york was more than a month ago but i am still reminiscing the phõ there. The bone marrow and beef phõ is a must order! Chef’s kiss 👨🏻🍳💋
I have been here a few times now and wanted to leave this review. As I am always by myself when I come here so I sit at the bar. This way I do not have to wait. They can get busy and once you have their PHO you will understand why. The broth is very flavorful and the aroma permeates the air. I recommend anything with the words bone broth in it. If the delicious food was not enough, the service here is great. I am always greeted with a friendly smile. One of the best Pho shops in the city.
Hanoi House is a fantastic blend of authentic Vietnamese cuisine and a modern touch of fusion. The top 3 dishes that I have ordered, not just once but twice now are: Crispy Pork & Crab Spring Rolls, House Special Pho (featuring four kinds of beef cuts), and the Shaking Beef (of which the sauce is sublime)! Also, the Vietnamese iced coffee is a must try! The ambiance is a bit claustrophobic inside, but the outdoor dining is equally busy. The staff are an amazing team who are very friendly, efficient, and thoughful! Reservations are a MUST, walk-in customers have to wait quite a while even after the lunch rush
Hanoi House gives me hope for the foodservice industry. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about our visit to HH was exceptional. Our server, Mike, was a gem of a human being. Our runner, Angel, was courteous, attentive, and friendly. Mike gave use recommendation after recommendation and each were spot on. The cocktails we ordered, the Queenie (tequila, watermelon, sesame, and chili) was refreshing even on a chilly autumn evening. The shocker was the Bamboozled, though. That damn drink is a star in its own right: gin, grapefruit, lime, and bamboo rice syrup?? Like, who makes bamboo rice syrup from scratch?!?! Hanoi House does, my friend. For appetizers we got the grilled shishito peppers. Some had a bit of kick, others were perfectly mild, so it was a great combination. We also had the spicy garlic caulfilower. MY G!!! This freaking dish is good enough to eat on its own for eternity. You have to order it. Don't even argue about it. For our entrees, we just ordered every damn thing: the grilled pork noodles, shaking beef, and the OXTAIL banh mi. OX-TAIL. Okay? Say less. Between the service, the ambiance, and the food, I'm mad I left New York. Happy I have a place to go when I visit my family again, but really bummed I can't go to Hanoi House every weekend.
Top of the range and all that! The menu is quite simple and for novices of Vietnamese cooking, we were quite happy and satisfied by the food and execution. The Pho was above average, but the fried frog legs, beet root crepe and spring rolls were out of this world! Definitely try the dessert! A friendly and attentive staff make it a great place! Yes, it's a bit pricey, but worth the quality.
Easily the best Beef Pho in the city! Hands down. Blew others out of the water. Service was A1 (dude let me try something just cause I mentioned it) and the cauliflower appetizers were crack. Lamb one explodes with deliciousness in ur mouth (pause). Get the house special or go home. This is a new monthly visit spot 💯 — Edit: I literally go once a month now to keep my soul aligned :)
Came here on a Sunday morning right as they opened at 11:30. At 11:35 there was already a line of 7 people outside. I guess the place is popular! I started off with Bamboozled cocktail that had a beautiful milky white texture from bamboo rice. Strong, tasty, unique. So good. Manilla clams app — awesome flavors with a very noticeable presence of fish sauce in a broth full of chunky tomatoes; portion quite large for an app. Some might find this one a tad too salty. Pho was pretty good although brisket was a bit rough. Maybe should try filet mignon next time. You can get a bone marrow for an extra and it was one of the better ones I’ve tried — sometimes they tend to have this unpleasant beefy flavor, but not this one. Finally, a giant pork noodle dish which seems like the best value here. Lots of meat of all kinds, fried crab roll, lots of sauce and pickled veggies; this entree can easily feed 2 people. All in all, loved this place and will be coming back again.
Delicious food! Didn't have any expectations when we first walked in, found the restaurant by chance and saw it had good reviews so figured why not give a chance. Our server was very helpful in answering questions about drinks and food and would check in on us to make sure everything was good. For the appetizer we had the lamb which was very flavorful. Everything we tried did not disappoint. I will be coming back and I recommend this place to anyone who loves good food
Sensational! First, the entrance to a quaint bar that makes time pass quickly as you wait for your seat! Drinks were well balanced out and a nice refined selection. Table was tucked away and made for a perfect time with friends or perhaps a special date! When i say that everything we ordered was great, EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! Started with the pig ear and papaya salad was a perfect balance between hot and cold, salty and sweet, herbacious and tangy! Accompanied by a perfectly spiced set of cauliflower made a perfect pairing to start the night off. For the main course, the. Banh. Mi. Was. Divine. Paired with a side of the pho broth. I am not sure how to put it into words, how well this sandwich worked out. Oxtail, cilantro, onions! The only missing piece were perhaps a bit of pickled veggies and jalapeno! Spicy option would be next level! Pork shoulder noodles was the final course and it was a nice mix of traditional Vietnamese flavors! I had to get the bone marrow too! Wooof! I will be coming back VERY soon to experience this wonderful place again!
Incredible food! Came here on recommendation from Infatuation and it didn’t disappoint. Got a classic beef pho and it was a perfect flavor and size. Will be back for more!
What an experience Hanoi House was. I made the decision to have Pho earlier in the day. How do you find the best Pho in New York City? Shift through several articles online that offers you their pick, then GUESS if it is an accurate depiction or if the restaurant paid....... Hanoi House did not pay, it is seriously good. It was a cold afternoon, I stumbled in at 5:00 p.m., memo to me, it doesn't open until 5:30. I was offered to sit at the bar until they opened. Having come all the way from The Bronx, yeah, I waited and they did not disappoint. The website Time Out has Hanoi House listed as one of the best Pho restaurants in New York City. I always order a restaurants signature dish on my first visit. I had the Classic Hanoi Style Beef with the options of two proteins, I selected the filet mignon and oxtail. The dish came super fast so don't order until you are ready to eat. Just to give you an idea of how fast it came: I ordered from the bar, the bartender punched in my order, then turned to pour my wine, the wine and the Pho was put in front of me at exactly the same time. The chili sauce is served on the side with chopped garlic. I asked the bartender where are the sprouts? His reply, this restaurant serves Pho in the way the dish is served in Hanoi. So unknowingly, I like Hanoi style Pho the best. Wonderful atmosphere, I observed several couples there on dates, perfect date night restaurant, small intimate, and warm. I sat at the bar, near the door and did not receive a freezing breeze as customers came in and out. This restaurant is worth traveling to. 5 stars WAYYYYY up, and BTW, Sam Rockwell popped in to pick up a to go order, he is shooting right now so his beard is long and I thought that he was him, but it was later confirmed to me. He is a regular, try this out if you are a fan of soup or Pho, worth your time, my only regret was not getting the bone marrow in my Pho, but I am getting this next week.
My Vietnamese friend recommended this place to me noting they have authentic Northern style pho. I very much enjoyed the classic pho! The broth was super flavored (could really tell they simmered and prepped the broth for a long time) and the green onions really enhances the taste. A bite of the fresh noodles with broth and their pickled garlic was bursting with flavor! Highly recommend if you want a different style of the common pho. Also I'm not a big meat eater but the meat was pretty good and didn't put me off given how little meat I eat. Note this is not the common pho with Thai basil and bean sprouts that's southern pho. The vegetarian bánh mì was quite flavorful and filled with lots of veggies. The five star plus was from the amazing owner Sarah who went out of her way to create two dishes for my husband who cannot have refined sugar. She very much understood his dietary restriction and took it seriously. They made the papaya salad with flash fried tofu (unmarinated so no sugar) and the morning glory water spinach with brisket. Very much appreciate how much care and attentive she and the team had on dietary restrictions. Looking forward to returning to try the vegetarian pho.
Let me just start by saying this is a place you do not want to miss if you enjoy. If you’ve never had fun, this would definitely be the best place for your first time. I was in Hanoi last April. I’ve loved pho since the first time I tried it years ago. So, when my two Vietnamese friends said to try Hanoi House, I couldn’t wait. I was visiting NYC. I brought my parents for their Christmas gift from me. They had never tried pho before. We had the spring rolls, papaya salad, and each a bowl of the clsssicbpho. My parents both had the thin filet beef and brisket. I had the filet and bone marrow. Wow, this food was amazing The papaya salad was so light and fresh. It had the perfect amount of herbs, Thai basil etc and just the right amount of fish sauce, pretty certain that’s what it was. The spring rolls were delightful, crispy and tasty. My parents coding get enough. But, the star of the show was the pho Rich and flavorful bone broth. The thin filet slices cooked perfectly in the broth as i stirred it in. I tasted the bone marrow before I scraped it into the broth. Wow. It was so flavorful. If you love pho, you’ll love Hanoi House.
Everything was absolutely delicious! Had the rolls and the pho and it was to die for. The broth was so good I took it home and used it to make an extra bowl of pho the next morning! Service was excellent too. Our waiter who was also the bartender was so sweet and helpful with recommendations. Will be coming back definitely.
I love the bone broth pho at Hanoi House! Came here late one night, they were super busy and I got takeout, unfortunately my order request wasn’t fulfilled as expected but I call them up to let them know and they were very onto it with correcting it so I have to say not only is the food amazing but so is the customer service too! There’s a reason why this place is so highly rated with so many reviews, you simply MUST try Hanoi House if you haven’t already :)
Amazing place serving up some authentic Vietnamese cuisine but with a upscale twist. The crispy pig ears and papaya salad was awesome. Really refreshing papaya and a unique lovely crispy but gelatinous pig ear texture on top pair perfectly well. Complex but not overpowering mix of soy and fish sauce flavors. On to the signature short rib and bone marrow pho. Extremely unique relatively clear broth and not overly oily. Flavor is not quite as complex as I would have liked from a deep bone broth but adding in the chili oil on the side kicked the flavor up to be enjoyable. Lots of thai mint and basil makes the flavor super refreshing. Plenty of meats and good value. The crispy bread and the bone marrow on the side is extremely unique but extremely tasty and like an included side dish to the main entree. Service is quick and friendly. Pricing is reasonable. Plenty of outdoor seating and some enclosed seating.
I'm craving that delectable, meaty fresh pho with its indulgent bone marrow; it's a must-try! The waiter, who happens to be a delightful Asian gentleman, made our dining experience truly enjoyable with his attentive and welcoming service and fun personality. I couldn't resist taking his recommendation—the house special, pho dac biet—and I must say, it is a satisfying dish! (the only reason why I mentioned this gentleman's ethnicity is because unfortunately I didn't ask his name and he gave exceptional service which I think truly deserves recognition) The dish boasts a burst of incredible flavors, with a savory broth that's simply divine. The generous amount of meat adds a delightful richness to every spoonful. Now, here's where the fun comes in—using the breastick to dip into the marrow oil creates an enchanting combination of crunchy and creamy textures that adds so much fun to the entire dining experience! In summary, this place not only serves up a mouthwatering pho but also has a staff that knows how to make dining here an absolute pleasure.
The restaurant's decor adds value to the dining experience. Their team creates trusting interactions. This restaurant sets the benchmark others fail to reach. The food preparation shows exceptional care. I can't wait to come back and try more dishes.
The food offers taste perfection alongside service perfection. The staff balances friendliness with professionalism. This restaurant provides filling meals that taste great. The meal sizes are substantial and bills remain reasonable. We've agreed this place deserves our loyalty.
Second time coming here, and again, left speechless! Two of Vietnamese friends brought me here as they considered this place to serve some very close to authentic food, and if they say it, it got to be true. The pork ears, the crab, the lamb, the pho, and the banh mi… just WOW!!! Vietnamese food has that indescribable balance between meat and vegetables in every dish, and this restaurant definitely does it well! You won’t feel greasy afterwards as some Asian restaurants might do, but very satisfied and delighted. The servers super nice and gentle. Very well done Hanoi House team! Kudos to everyone! Super recommended!!!
After spending extended time in Vietnam, this is the best Pho i’ve had outside of the country. The broth is flavorful, strong, and deep with saporous tastes. The brisket was cooked to perfection and the bone marrow checked all of the boxes of what could make it so delicious. The bowl was definitely on the smaller side of any Pho i’ve gotten before, but the quality of the meal makes up for it. Grab a reservation if you can! It gets busy fast.
Not your typical Vietnamese restaurant, they serve up great food with delicious, bold flavors. Got the Dac Biet pho and it came with real strong, dark broth. It also came with bone marrows and fried dough - if you order a hot Vietnamese coffee, here’s a hack - they go really well if you dip the fried dough in the coffee.
I admittedly had this as take-out, but im impressed how well packaged the grilled pork noodles were. They were delicious, with crunchy lettuce around soft pork meatballs and a great broth. Cant wait to come back and visit in person.
Bone marrow Pho was amazing! I would certainly come back here for food. However, I have to give the Atmosphere a 3-star. The table my partner & I sat beside was so close to us that each time either table wanted to get up, we had to move the entire table over to make space. Definitely not a comfy experience.
This spot came highly recommended from a friend & it did not disappoint! Special shoutout to our server who was just so lovely, patient, & attentive. The 3 meat Pho was rich, not too hot, and fabulous. The libations were great. We sat outside so if you want indoor seating I highly recommend making a reservation as early as possible. Now y’all, what set the tone for this entire meal was this shrimp salad with cabbage & roasted cashews. It was cold, smelled fantastic & tasted even better. It was a great start to our meal.
I ordered the HOUSE SPECIAL PHO. I'l be coming back for more!! The pho contains rare filet mignon, oxtail, brisket AND bone marrow to upgrade your usualy pho experience. The meat melted in my mouth and the bowl was so filling. The breadstick was perfect but I so full I could barely finish. The egg coffee I ordered (cold) was also really nice) I was really impressed. 10/10 experience. Service was fast and they kept checking up on our group to make sure we were good.
Friend and I dined in during happy hour. We got in without reservations on Friday night. The happy hour specials had the cocktails discounted more steeply than any of the food items. Place was not too busy and there were lots of kids around. It’s a pretty narrow space though so I wouldn’t say it is very accessible. We had to take our coats off the coat hooks so that they didn’t bother the group sitting next to us. The portions are on the smaller side and I saw that group sitting next to us just ordered an entire second order of pho. The food was amazing though and I was tempted to do that myself. I had never had pho with the condiments like pickled garlic, this particular chili sauce which I ordered seconds of, and a ginger condiment which was also great. That being said I don’t think it really needed any more flavor as the veggie broth was so aromatic. One of my favorite vegetarian phos ever. Would just prefer more tofu. Food came out super fast and everything was cooked well.
Came for the V-day dinner 🍽️ It’s an American-style Vietnamese restaurant. Compared to other traditional Vietnamese cuisine, it is quite different.(they don’t have much options here, the menu is rather limited.) My husband likes the Hanoi style pho noodle soup and we also like the banh mi beef bread, the meat is plenty, but should add more parsley(cilantro), cucumber slices and shedded carrots it will be even more flavorful and chewy:))
I had the pleasure of dining at Hanoi House on for dinner on March 5th. I had been a few times before, but this was my first time as a solo dinner. My experience was incredible, and probably the single most satisfying meal I have eaten in New York since I moved here 8 months ago. The standout moments for me where the staff, particularly the host. She was funny, efficient, accommodating, and seemingly omnipresent. She was handling to-go orders, seating multiple large parties, and even took my order when the sever was with the large parties. The sever and busser were also nice and I enjoyed a friendly chat with one them. The pho and the tea were delicious and so satisfying. I felt like all the stress in the world was melting away with each sip, I felt like a different person at the end of my meal. The atmosphere was very relaxing. The warm soft lighting and the reggae music were exactly the energy I needed after a long cold day in the city. There’s just something magical about how a little bit kindness and really good food can create such impactful and uplifting experience. Thank you so much for having me.
Simply amazing! A must to visit if you want authentic North Vietnamese cuisine. Their buncha took me back to Huong Lien in Hanoi where Buncha Obama is top of the menu. The crab and pork roll that goes with the buncha is perfect! The service is exceptional, you never have to ask for anything, they anticipate your needs during your meal. The best of Vietnamese hospitality!
Cozy Vietnamese cusine on the lower east side. We stopped by for lunch and it was quite busy. Luckily we had placed a reservation so we didnt have to wait long. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, perfect blend of casual and intimate. We ordered the spicy garlic cauliflower as an appetizer, and for main dish we got vegetarian Banh Mi and Pho. The cauliflower was very good, the spicy seasoning and oil was very flavorful. The Banh Mi was crunchy and delicious, the fried tofu was well seasoned. The Pho broth definitely hit the spot on a cold day. Service was great and pricing was reasonable and fair.
Wow. Been to Vietnam. Love my Vietnamese food and hands down this was the best I’ve ever had in my life. They nailed the flavors. Came with 5 of us and we ordered every appetizer except the lamb meatballs- which the owner Ben noticed and after the meal told me they may the best- and everything was bursting with flavor, fresh, unique and outstanding. The pho was magnificent and we all loved this place. I’ll be dreaming of this ace back in Chicago. Can’t wait to get back.
We were totally floored by the abundance of flavors happening here. Add the cozy townhouse vibe and you are truly in the heart of the East village. The cauliflower, papaya salad and shaking beef with bone marrow, pickled garlic and greens gave us all the feels. Price was spot on and service was awesome. Try to get seated in the little brick nook in the back of the house with iron gate, it made our experience that more memorable.
I stopped by here on a chilly night and the pho was perfect for the weather. It was savory and spicy and had a great flavor. I got the Classic Hanoi Style Pho with Filet Mignon and Brisket, and I would get it again! The service and great and the ambience was perfect. The lighting and soft music was great for dinner. The prices were very reasonable and I would definitely come back again.
As a Vietnamese person I was suspicious but delightfully impressed by the house special pho. Nailed the broth flavor, perfect noodle texture, quality meats (not the most traditional but exceptionally tasty). The bone marrow and fried dough was an unfamiliar complement but life changing in the best ways. Will be returning!!!!!
This is our favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the USA. Ben the owner is super nice and kind in offering us some homemade hotsauce to go when we came in for the 3rd time for the best chicken Pho in the world. Service is great, music is great. Food is so amazing and they are very accommodating to help split the food into two bowls for you if you're sharing. And you can get extra broth on the side just to get your bone broth supplement in. Can't say enough great things about this place, you need to come in if you're in the city! Definitely come early or call in to save a spot. Your life will be changed.
This place has astounding pho with an intriguing selection of meats (that convinced me to try all of them). I ordered the House Special Pho + tendons and it was honestly one of the best soups I've ever had. The waitress we had was also very kind and friendly, and while the seating in doors can be a little cramped, it's nicely decorated and the music delivers a sophisticated vibe. Also my group had a reservation so it's probably safer to reserve.
Really tasty food and lovely service! The house special pho (pho dac biet) was rich, flavorful, and fantastic. I also tried the salted lime soda, which was refreshing and tart. We had the clams (ngao xao) and the summer rolls with grilled chicken sausage (goi cuon nem nuong), which were both fresh and delicious. The lemongrass chicken wings (canh ga chien) were crispy with great flavor. Definitely would come back!
We came here because we were craving Hanoi-style bun cha from our visit to Vietnam last year. Hanoi House does not disappoint!! We also loved the egg coffee and pork spring rolls. The lively atmosphere with the weekend sidewalk seating is incredible and a great way to enjoy a meal in the city.
Hanoi House is a Vietnam restaurant that specializes in northern style dishes. The food was delicious with a modern twist to class Vietnamese dishes. We really enjoyed the house special pho, the broth was clear and rich in beef flavours, the bone marrow was a nice accompaniment. The shaking beef was another well executed dish with rich garlic butter flavours. Service was efficient and helpful with menu questions. Overall a wonderful dining experience.
I visited on Saturday evening for dinner. We had to wait about 45 minutes for the table for 2. Inside was dark with dim light. . We first ordered Hanoi Style Beef Pho with the bone marrow. We wanted to share everything so they actually split the pho into two bowls, so it was really convenient to eat. Pho was good, and I liked the broth but I am not sure if adding the bone marrow was worth the extra cost. . For Shellfish Curry, I wish they had more curry in the dish because from the beginning I felt like I was scraping off the bottom of dish to pick up curry. They did have lots of seafood (2 large shrimps and lots of mussels and claims)
Dark Vibey Vietnamese Fusion Ambience: all the decor screams fusion, it almost feels like a French bistro? Tay son pirate: this drink is niceeeee. All the flavors of tamarind, rums, sesame shochu blended so well together. Papaya and pig ear: the pig ears were crunchy and chewy, the papaya salad was lightly seasoned and not that spicy. Since it’s a fusion place don’t expect that pungent Vietnamese punch of flavors. Sautéed little clams: it was okay, came with a youtiao Pho: get the pho, get the pho, get the pho! The best dish of the night, loved the broth, tender beef, it did not disappoint! They have a house made chili sauce, make sure you try it out!
8.18.17 - We waited for about 30-45 minutes to be seated and grabbed a quick bite at Five Tacos. The food at Hanoi House was generally good, but nothing too amazing. The Pho was generally good, but the broth was a little bit on the sweet side, more so than I've had it other pho throughout the City. I don't think it's added sugar, but probably more onions in the broth than necessary, but that's how this place makes their broth. The Crispy Spring Rolls were spot on and the beef tongue dish was okay. It was also on the sweet side, but oddly also too salty. Would I go back? Hm...there's no dish that makes me want to go back there every week. However, everyone should try this spot.
honestly coming from toronto this pho was not the best tasting but it has its own unique taste. my standards are too high. bone marrow was okay, I'd only recommend if you're a bone marrow lover. their noodles were perfectly cooked though! they don't have sriracha they have their own house made chilli sauce and hoisin tasted different. crab spring rolls were delicious. pretty expensive but worth a try at least once.
it exceeded expectations as far as food goes. although I have never paid $26 for pho before the bone marrow addition was fun and super delicious. the vietnamese egg coffee is insanely good but I got it at 8pm so pray for me! one thing that was really annoying was the fact that they have three separate outdoor patios with like one or two tables each. we sat at the larger one that waiters keep coming in and out of to deliver food. because of this the metal door kept slamming on us every few seconds, super aggressively. my friend was only one centimeter away from the door.
Post Covid update: I have a feeling the pho flavor has changed since the last time I visited. It’s not as flavorful and is dosed with onions; this is not how they do it in Vietnam. Fried dough order have also reduce half in size; you used to get 2 per order, now 1. Not sure what is going on here but no longer my favorite. 2019 review: Delicious food! I love that they serve those quẩy (fried dough). I don’t know about you but pho is not the same without quẩy. Bún chả was a little salty but has all the right flavor. Service was good. Make sure to reserve table in advance because the restaurant is small so there are not too many seats.
This is a very busy location so I suggest going early to get on the wait list. We had to wait over an hour and half for a table of 3 during lunch hour on a Saturday. Every time we came back to check st the mentioned time, they kept extending it. Not only that, I thought we would be seated in the store but they made a makeshift outdoor eating area sectioned off with plants. This is the biggest reason why I’m not giving it 5 stars. It was cold, windy, street was dirty and smelly, my utensils and napkin literally kept flying away and falling onto the street. I’m sure it’s much nicer inside or off the street. The food itself was amazing. I’m not well-versed in viet food so I can’t speak on how authentic it is but their house special pho with bone marrow is delicious. Broth was delightful, I wish there were more. Since it was cold outside, I had to hurry to drink it as it cooled down very quickly. Their wraps were meh. I prefer the traditional shrimp or pork/beef. Their banhmi also very mediocre, especially for the price. I wish they would toast the bread so it would come warm but that’s a personal preference I guess.
Lucky to got a reservation on the same day for dinner. This place on st marks is always busy with the weekend crowds. The restaurant is very small so the seatings are limited and the tables are cramped. The ambience is dimly lit, cozy, with a modernly wooden tone. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and entrees and had everything to share. The portion size is neither too big nor small. My favorite was the spicy octopus in curry sauce with lemongrass. The lemongrass was very refreshing and the curry was flavorful with a little spicy kick. The octopus was charred such that the skin is crispy but inside is chewy. The butternut squash also goes great with the curry and tasted amazing. The pork sausage in the summer roll was delicious and my highlight of the dish - it added a crispy crunch to the roll and elevated the overall texture. The dipping sauce was also on point. Papaya and pig ear salad was delightful. Growing up in Asia, I'm used to pig ears being a regular dish at most restaurants. Their pig ears were deeply fried that there was almost no fat left and it was very crunchy. I think it was done a little bit too much and lost some of the sharp crisp and some part of the ears became almost too hard to bite. The sauce could have been spicier for my taste. Overall it was still a good salad. The beef pho soup was hearty and delicious and you can just drink the whole bowl of it! It had that umami flavorful from the beef that keeps you wanting more. It wasnt salty or oily but on the lighter side (without adding the bone marrow). It goes great with the spicy sauce too. The monkfish was not too impressive and the dipping sauce that came with it was too smoky. The vermicelli that came with it was also mediocre. I would not recommend getting this dish there. Overall a solid Vietnamese restaurant - glad I had visited!
I arrived at 6:30PM and was seated immediately at a table next to the window, however, it's a small restaurant so you might not be so lucky. They have a great bowl of pho with homemade chili sauce and pickled garlic, but I personally prefer pho with tripe and tendon. Our servers were attentive and efficient. Would definitely visit again.
The food was great. But I didn’t like the service. When we got in, the hostess told us to wait a few minutes for our table to get ready so we were hanging out near the bar in a tight spot. After a few minutes she asked us to seat at the table which was right where we were standing and it was ready this whole time. I found that really strange. The way the server kept asking for our order and cleaning up the table also felt very rushed.
Service: The restaurant strictly opens at 11:30, even for those with reservations at that time. However, the staff members are friendly and helpful. Vibe: The seating arrangement inside the restaurant is quite tight, with tables only about 6-10 inches apart. Iced Mango Tea: The mango aroma in the tea is subtle, and it doesn't stand out as particularly special. Bun Cha (Pork Noodles): The vegetables and sauce in the dish were slightly sour for our taste. However, the Nem and grilled pork were satisfactory. The highlight of the dish was the crispy spring rolls. Pho Bac (Classic Hanoi Style Beef): The dish was served with authentic Garlic Vinegar, which added to its authenticity. The soup base was delicious, and the beef was flavorful. The accompanying sauce and quay breadstick were a nice touch. Overall: Based on our experience, we would rate Hanoi House Restaurant 4/5.
Hanoi house is a great place to visit with amazing foods. The soup is amazing as well as the noodle. Only downside I’ve experienced on this place is the table that’s outside is very tilted, and wiggles a bit too hard that we almost split our drinks and the noodle. If you were to dine here, in-door is the place to be👏
I like Hanoi house for brunch/lunch on the weekend. We had the traditional banh mi with pork and the beef brisket banh mi. The portions were nice. Flavor wise we liked the beef more as the pork banh me gave more bacon vibes than pork belly if you can imagine. Staff were friendly. You pay at the table. The bathroom door is quite heavy. I’d recommend. We made a reservation.
Unique flavours and delicious food! Tried Hanoi House for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I’ve never had northern Vietnamese cuisine as my parents are from the south, but the food here was delightful! The lamb in a leaf wrap was a bit over salted and overall, it felt like a few of their grilled meats and pork dishes were a bit too much in the salty side. Not to mention we are also dipping it into fish sauce so the meat did not have to be as salty. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable! Pho with bone marrow was probably my favourite dish. Authentic and clear broth and the pho had very generous meat portion and sizes. The bone marrow was good, but probably not worth the price as the actual edible content from the bone marrow was very little! Still, it makes for a nice instagram post. The Vietnamese iced coffee and the egg coffee was well made. Wouldn’t recommend getting it! Overall, I think this place deserves 4 stars. I don’t think I’d personally be back, but definitely worth trying at least once!
This is a busy and lovely restaurant in the East Village. We attempted it without reservation on a Saturday afternoon and we had a 30 minute wait. The host was lovely and found us a table inside as soon as he could. The clams and summer rolls were delicious, the pho was ok. Service was sparse I guess it was a busy day but aside from taking our orders we didn’t get much service and had to fight for attention to get our bill. It was good but I have another Vietnamese restaurant in town with better food and service, so not likely to return.
Really liked the summer rolls and spring rolls. Pho is probably a 3/5 The pho broth and noodle texture were good- also appreciated the smoky spicy sauce and garlic on the side but the oxtail was odd- it was basically like head cheese (a gelatinous meat product with an assortment of meat pieces bone and fat) which made it feel like a cheaper bowl of pho. The bone marrow didn't add much to the dish- more for visuals, since the broth was already pretty oily after the head cheese dissolves. Honestly it was a little nauseating to eat it because agree it just tasted like fat and oil. This dish was definitely overpriced for the quality.
If you love Vietnamese food and want to try a place that’s a cut above the rest, then come to Hanoi House. I came here on a Saturday when the weather didn’t know whether to be sunny or raining. In some cases it was both. We sat outside bc the sun was out but as a storm cloud rolled in we were immediately ushered inside by the friendliest and most attentive staff I’ve encountered in a long time. They were so apologetic having to move us and offered to remake any dishes. The pho is as always very delicious. It’s better than so many viet places I’ve been to in and around NYC. Thank you to the staff team for a great experience.
Everything was solid! We managed to snag a table as a walk in a on Wednesday evening. The service was quick. The food came out in a timely manner. The broth was super FLAVORFUL. The noodles were a bit too hard for my liking . They should have been cooked longer. The summer rolls were pretty good. They should have accompanying sauces were ehh. I would love to come back to see what the other dishes taste like as we only got the summer rolls and signature pho dish.
Delicious, authentic Vietnamese restaurant. The restaurant’s decor was stylish and inviting, featuring an open kitchen that added to the ambiance. The staff were friendly and attentive. The broth was rich, savory and full of flavor. The bowl was packed with meat which was incredibly tender, juicy, and so soft it practically melted in your mouth.
2022 Update: Fast forward 5 years since I ate at Hanoi House, there were a few noticeable differences since my last visit. Firstly, I barely recognized the restaurant - the outdoor patio at the entrance hide the colonial decor. Secondly, the menu has been abbreviated to appease the mainstream crowd - pho, banh mi and bun at prices closer to its neighborhood competitor Madame Vo. There were some appetizers such as the pig ear with papaya salad on the menu for foodies that appreciate Vietnamese cuisine outside of the above three items.Gone are the dishes that really made Hanoi House stand above other Vietnamese restaurants you find in Manhattan. The restaurant feels cheaper, a little dated and for students than the young professional crowd like before. Thirdly, as other reviewers have mentioned - everything we ordered was fairly salty and you definitely feel it the next morning even if you chug a bottle of water before you sleep...be prepared for a fish sauce breath the morning after. Overall, it still serves decent Vietnamese food but it is no longer a dining destination for it.
3 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐ Hanoi House in the Heart of East Village, NYC offers a chill setting, featuring a concise menu of creative Vietnamese dishes, along with a selection of craft beers and wine. However, my recent visit to Hanoi House with three friends definitely did not live up to our expectations. While the food was generally good, it was not great. The house specialty, the Hanoi Style Beef Pho With Bone Marrow was meh at best. I've had better pho and definitely better bone marrow. Honestly, this supposed star of the show ended up being a lackluster symphony of disappointment and plainness. Pros: Great neighborhood. The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Cons: The food is ok The restaurant can be crowded. Overall: I would recommend Hanoi House to people who are looking for a casual and affordable place to try authentic Vietnamese cuisine. However, I would not say that it is the best Vietnamese restaurant in NYC.
Fried Pig Ear papaya salad: Overly salty dressing and batter 2/5. Very crispy skin tho. Not as crunchy papaya shreds but a lot of greens. Pho classic: noodle to meat ratio imbalanced, nice flavor and good tendon and oxtail(shredded). Spicy paste 10/10. Pork shoulder noodle: Love the noodles, pickled daikon is nice. Crunchy spring meat roll. Broth is like a sauce. Drinks: salt lime soda5/5. Bamboozled. Bathroom is nice. spacious and cute.
In summary, you are overpaying for the ambience. I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants before. The pho here is not traditional. It is more of a modern fusion mix. From the mild beef broth, to the hard noodles, and the lack of bean sprouts, this place is not your traditional Vietnamese restaurant. The Bun Cha was average with a mild fish sauce. You will overpay here for average Vietnamese food. The food is mediocre, but the atmosphere is spot on. The restaurant is small and you may end up sitting at the bar. Come here to impress a date, but don’t expect to find value or authentic Vietnamese food.
We got here on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. I was intrigued when seeing Pho Bac (which was an indication of Northern Pho) on the menu so I decided to try it, along with Bun Cha and Cuu La Lot (Lamb meat roll). Service was decent, although we did have to wait quite a bit for our food. The lamb dish was definitely fusion-style. It was different than traditional Beef one, but acceptable. Bun Cha was pretty good. The fish sauce was less sweet than other places that I’ve been to. I was hopeful about the Pho Bac but it turned out to be a disappointment. This Pho dish is nothing authentic. In fact, it was just a fusion attempt on an existing southern Pho soup. It felt a bit misleading, since it was not northern Pho. Curious, I asked if the owner was Vietnamese, and the waitress told me no. It confirmed my suspicion that this place was ran by someone not from northern Vietnam, but attempted to create some fusion-style northern Viet dishes. Overall the ambiance of this place is kinda cool and interesting. Food was okay, mediocre and not authentic at all. If you want a different approach on Viet food, this place is decent choice. But don’t come here expecting any authentic taste.
I’ve visited this pho restaurant a few times during pandemic and always thought it was a solid spot, so I decided to bring my parents and my 7-month-old son to try it together. Unfortunately, this visit was very disappointing. When we arrived, the waiter with dreadlocks directed us to enter through a small side door. With a stroller and a sleeping baby, this immediately became a struggle—we had to lift the entire stroller up and down several stairs just to get inside. It was stressful and unnecessary. Inside, the restaurant was nearly empty, with only two tables occupied, yet we were seated right in front of the restrooms. It felt like very little thought was put into accommodating us, especially considering we had an infant and elderly parents with us. The funniest (and most frustrating) moment came when we were leaving: we noticed a large main door that opens directly to the street. That’s clearly where we should have been guided from the start. Also the food was not good as it was before. Won’t recommend our friends to came here.
Pho was mediocre, AT BEST. We had both the classic Hanoi style and house special pho. Broth was not authentic and had little taste (not even "little beef taste", just "little taste in general") -- it had a light but oily texture and left a dry feeling on the tongue, there was no aroma nor taste other than raw chicken stock. So I am pretty sure they just boiled a single oxtail bone in a big pot of soup, realized how bland it was and dumped oil, MSG, and chicken stock to it, trying to mask it up. The only positives were that the noodles and cilantro were edible and tasted alright. Deeply disappointed this place even had anything more than 3 stars, especially considering the cost-to-proportion ratio. If you want decent pho, consider something like Non La instead.
The pho portion is really small. Smallest I’ve ever had, and I got the pho ga/chicken pho. The flavors are so mild and muted, very flavorless. No herbs, not at all authentic. The chicken is not grilled chicken, it’s boiled and just very bland. This is definitely not for the Asian palate. The good thing about this is they the noodles are a nice texture, which is why I’m giving it 2 stars.
I’ve come a long way from where I live to try the Pho here and was sad to be disappointed. I was born and raised in Hanoi, so I can say with absolute certainty that this is not authentic, from the noodles to the broth. It doesn’t taste very good either, and with the small portion it’s really not worth the high price. I haven’t tried other dishes so cannot say anything about them.
