Opinions de Joey Bats Café New York
I’m obsessed. The blueberry are the favorite but they’re all so good. The chocolate has the perfect amount of chocolate too. Also always love a classic!
These Portuguese pastries at Joey Bats Cafe are insane !! It’s like a Crème Brûlée + Croissant in one & I’m low key addicted. I’ve put so many of my friends onto these tarts cuz they’re that GOOD. I also get their black coffee drip and the quality is great!
Light 9 Pasteis de Nata. Great texture and flavor. Bc it’s mildly flavored you can really taste the cinnamon on top and it goes well with it. Nice flaky texture. 8/10 Wildberry flavor. It tastes good too but I prefer to fully taste the normal egg tart my flavor.
Joey Bats Café is one of my favorite spots for Portuguese treats! This was my first time visiting their Essex Market location. I came a bit later in the day, so the pastry I wanted was sold out, but I was still able to grab one of my favorites, the blueberry Pasteis de Nata, and as always, it was delicious. Joey Bats truly has some of the best Portuguese tart so when I find one near I always get some. The café is inside the Essex Market, with plenty of seating both upstairs and downstairs.
If you enjoy Portuguese Pastel de Nata, then Joey Bats is the place to go. During my visit they were selling three varieties; Original, Passion Fruit, and Cinnamon. Being a purist, I stuck to the Original and was quite pleased with the delicate, flaky crust and the delicious custard filling. The coffee was great too. It was a treat to get a Cinnamon stick for the coffee. Great service with a smile.
I hate writing reviews but when warranted I’ll go out of my way. The Jefa of Joey Batts was awesome and down to earth. Me and my Wife were speaking to her thinking she was there to buy just like we were until she offered us the Chocolate and Passion Fruit to try on the spot. I HATE PASSION FRUIT but it was AMAZING, the Chocolate as well but nothing is like the Original. Nice flaky crust smooth, sweet and heavenly taste. It was ao good we bought frozen ones for home and those are just as great too. The Cashier was very nice and accommodating. I have a sweet tooth but never had q Portuguese pastry until Joey Batts and I don’t like much of anything very picky but take it from me if your in LES and on the fence about trying it, jump over that fence and grab yourself 4! (Two original, one chocolate and one passion fruit) and wash it down with a nice cup of coffee, latte or tea. Can’t wait to go back thanx good ppl at Joey Batts! (Late night snack air fryer)
Swung by for two natas. I was hoping to try their vegan natas but learned those are only available at the Chelsea Market! I hope they plan to spread them to the other locations :) I had the blueberry and passionfruit natas. These things melt in your mouth and cover your palette with divine flavor. So delicious! Thank you!!
Pretty darn good. The smell is the same as those of Belem. They get pretty darn close to the taste as well. Kuddos. The price was fair I got the six pack for $20 not bad. Tried two of the maracujá ones. They were pretty darn good as well. Will def be back again soon when I have saudade 🫶🫀🫶
HIDDEN GEM for portuguese Natas (not that easy to make but - oh so DELICIOUS) and espresso - strong, smooth, yummy! Love sitting outdoors! Their indoor area is closed. Make sure to also try their sparkling water/seltzer - WOW!!!! Why have I never seen this brand at grocery stores! Delicious!!!! Wish they opened earlier in the morning!!
My friend brought us here to try the pasteis de natas and they were amazing!!! This was my first time trying these tarts - they were freshly made (soft, warm, and made with love) and they were served quickly to us. Can’t wait to come back! Definitely recommend if you are in the area! Pros: - DELISH pasteis de nata - Fast service - Friendly staff - Coffee/other drinks available Cons: - There may be a line depending on the time you go - A little pricey (but worth it!) - No outdoor/indoor dining, definitely a grab and go place
The most authentic pasteis de natas we’ve come across in NYC! Pastry was well baked and crusty (no soggy bottom!), and the custard was soft, delicious and has the perfect amount of caramelization. Perfect for pairing with a BICA for that afternoon pick up. Definitely a recommend for those who want a bite of Lisbon in NYC!
Best place to go if your feeling homesick or just love Portuguese food, people or pastries! Mama Bats makes the best desserts and pastels in town! Portuguese coffee is just superb and full of taste (as one should expect of her coffee) got lucky today and got Pudim, and it was like I was transported back in Portugal. I recommend this place vividly and thank Mama Bats and Joey for their hospitality!
Pasteis de Nata is one of our favorite pastries after we visited Lisbon last September. We tried to find an authentic one in NYC and finally found a decent one here. The decor of Joey Bat Cafe is adorable and artsy with Portuguese white brick. The outdoor dining is currently available and the environment is good. The options on the menu were limited and we had 2 signature egg tarts and Bica Recheada. The egg tarts are tasty especially the creamy filling but the crust was thin, soft, slightly different from what we like. The Bica Racheada, which is pastry with savory bacon filling was surprisingly good. The portion is good for two people to share.
Heard this was an authentic Portuguese spot so wanted to check it out. They don’t let you go in the store due to an ongoing lawsuit which is bizarre but all good. The empanada type pastry was nicely done. They also had another beef pie with a flaky crust which had a different name. I wasn’t too impressed with the place. The meat pastries were good but not spectacular. Maybe they have other stuff that is better. 3 stars.
All I can say is that although Portugal is considered the home of the Portuguese tart, I hope this is not the best representative of it in New York. It is an extremely mediocre tart, and somewhat small, while also charging $4 per piece. The traditional flavor does somewhat resume a creme brulee as it is advertised, but it is a stunningly mediocre one. Not to say that it is bad, but it is an insult to my wallet when there are better pastries all around the city. I would honestly consider getting a Portuguese Egg Tart in nearby Chinatown next time for 1/2 the price while it also delivers a similar product.
