Opinions de Russ & Daughters Cafe New York
Food came out fast, my server Xuan was excellent and the ambiance was really comfortable! I really enjoyed all the food - got the bialy with cream cheese and lox board, their smoked salmon eggs benedict, latkes, knishes, mushroom barley soup, malted egg cream, and also tried their homemade sodas/shrub. My sister and I enjoyed everything!! We want to take our grandfather here eventually :)
Loved the food, the service, the drinks and the vibe. It was a perfect experience. Food: we both ordered the eggs, smoked salmon and latkes. All three were exceptional. The latkes were nice and thick. Perfectly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Really well balanced with the onions and other seasoning in the batter. I expected the smoked salmon to be good and it still exceeded my expectations. It’s on the saltier side but the quality is exceptional. I was surprised the eggs over easy could be so good. They were so perfectly seasoned and executed. The drinks: my friend had the cherry balsamic shrub and I had the blueberry elderflower soda. Both had so much flavour but were very well balanced. They had so many other creative options I would have loved to try. Service: every single person we interacted with was so kind and warm. You can leave your name and number while you wait which gives you a chance to walk around in the meantime. Our server was warm, knowledgeable and his love of different items was contagious. The other few waiters or runners who dropped off food were also very warm and kind. Atmosphere: it’s busy but not overly crowded when it’s full. It has a buzzing but relaxed vibe. You can actually have a conversation with whom ever you’re with a hear what they’re saying. It’s also nicely decorated. Love all the details.
A big reputation and did not disappoint! I had the lox bagel with all the extras on an pumpernickel bagel and it was tasty, fresh and well presented. Service was great and made it a special meal. I also had the fresh orange juice and the whole experience was good. I was traveling solo and sitting at the bar was a great option. I met a really nice woman and we ate our bagels together!
This place has amazing food! No regret walking from 23rd street to all the way here as my morning walk. Fish is fresh, bagel is amazing, everything else is so good! We were lucky to arrive early enough so there wasn’t a line up at all. I definitely will come back again in the future. Came here with my dad and he said this is one of the best he ever had too as he’s picky on seafood. Thanks so much and will come again for sure!
We loved everything! And I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true. Vanilla egg cream, classic board, toasted bagels, breakfast martini, halva ice cream, latkes, some other kind of fish board ( 😀can’t remember, but it was good) The servers and host were all very hospitable and quick, but we did not feel rushed from our table at all.
Russ & Daughters Cafe is every bit a part of the legacy of the original store. The service is top notch, and the food always fresh and delicious. Its the type of place you can sit and feel the calm and connection to your people and it's history at once. You can find a quiet moment to savor Ina busy city. This is such a a place.
I tried this place after seeing it recommended online and it was one of the highlights of my trip. I was alone so I was seated at the bar which was arguably the best in the whole restaurant. I really loved the vibes and the overall ambiance. I tried my first egg cream here and it was surprisingly tasty. The service was quick, easy, and I never felt rushed to leave.
Visited Russ & Daughter’s Café and, as always, I love their classic with everything bagel. This time, I decided to try something new: the chocolate babka French toast with berries and sour cream. OMG, it was absolutely delicious! The café is clean, the staff is super friendly, and the overall experience was fantastic. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Incredible matzo ball soups. Fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious and they have a great lox selection. Was delighted to hear they have goat cheese cream cheese and a vegan coconut cream cheese. Will definitely be returning next time I’m in NYC. Highly recommend the bagel & lox as well as the lox, eggs, and onions.
Russ & Daughters is an institution and it's so nice they have the cafe space now so folks can sit and enjoy! Sam was our server and he was an absolute treasure! He kept an eye out as I am lactose intolerant which was especially kind and so appreciated. Also, thanks to the cafe for having vegan cream cheese and oat milk creamer available! Don't skip on the lox and the breads! It's all delicious!
This is the kind of place that makes your heart sing. Care, quality, and tradition manifested on a plate. Of my whole trip to New York (which included a Michelin star restaurant), this was the best meal. I’m KICKING myself that we didn’t get breakfast at Russ & Daughter’s Cafe every day. Service was friendly and added to our fond memory. The wait can be long; show up early if you want to ensure a spot. We showed up 10 minutes before they opened and there was a small line that formed during that time.
Must visit every time I am in NYC! The eggs benny was the best I have tried, but their sturgeon platter stole the show. The sturgeon had the texture of sliced turkey, and the perfect meaty/fish taste, their smoked salmon is delicious, but if I had to choose, I would go with the sturgeon. Their bagels were also delicious, however I have a bias towards Montreal bagels.
I went here twice when I was in NYC. I have never had a bagel this good. To me this was the best bagel I have ever had in NYC. Although for me, Tompkins square is a close second. As a I was eating my meal “The Classic”, all I was thinking was that I wish this was an endless cartoon bagel that I could just sit there forever enjoying this unforgettable experience.
Cozy spot for classic Jewish comfort food, with excellent bagels, smoked fish, and brunch plates. The atmosphere feels warm and nostalgic, and service is friendly even when the cafe is busy.
A must visit breakfast spot on the Lower East Side. We came on a Saturday morning shortly after opening hour and immediately got a table. Order of the day was scrambled eggs with sturgeon, lox bagel, and french toast. All absolutely delicious. Service staff was lovely, and overall I enjoyed the vibes here 😊
@russanddaughters is the address where you can experience bagels at the highest level. We never see that they never compromise on product quality, both when we live in NYC and when we visit afterwards. Apart from their historical business located in the Lower East Side, they serve on Orchard St with a dine-in concept. Their journeys that started in 1914 by Joel Russ continued for 100 years. Russ, named after his three daughters Hattie, Ida and Anne, It is the first known American business with “& Daughters” in its name. So what to eat? You should try various smoked and cured salmon, homemade salads and cream cheeses in addition to bagels. I recommend the "Board" for your first visit (see in pics). You can experience a palate orgasm with champagne or sparkling wine next to this aromas. Let's also add that it has been on the #michelin Bib Gourmand list for years.
I Love the Russ and Daughters legacy......!!! From the original store on Houston to the newborn in Hudson Yatds. They All have such charming services each becomes a favourite in its own way. This cafe is Everything....!!!! As if the whitefish salad isn't delicious enough, they breaded it, fried it and served it with lemon and remoulade.....!!!!! Deeeeelish.....!!!! I Always order the Cherry Shrub. This drink uses vinegar for acid instead of citrus.....Brilliant....!!! Not only is it full of flavour, but it is also Super Refreshing. I also ordered the SHTETL. This is the board with Sable and Goat Cream Cheese....!!! I get a toasted bialy and it comes with tomato, onion, and capers. This combination of flavours and textures is stunning. There are not many things I wish to eat Every Day, but THIS is One....!! The Chocolate Babka is Outstanding.....I would say more, but my mind is drifting. Thank You Russ & Daughters for continuing the tradition of stellar comfort food....!!! I look forward to returning Again and Again....!!!.....😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️
This place has ruined me for all other Jewish delis. Best latkes and lox bagel I've ever had. Babka French toast is the only way to have French toast now lol the buxar is the molasses egg cream and I've never seen that flavor at another place in NYC so def worth a try if you're a fan of egg creams!
Russ and Daughters Cafe was a highlight dining experience of our trip to NYC! The service was wonderful, and the food was absolutely amazing. I had the classic bagel board, and the lox was out-of-this-world good! My husband had the eggs benny, which was also amazing. We also got some black and white cookies to go, and they were delicious as well. I would absolutely recommend a visit to Russ and Daughters to anyone looking for amazing food in Manhattan!
A true privilege to enjoy this iconic place! Dining at Russ & Daughters Café was an unforgettable experience — a perfect blend of tradition, flavor, and atmosphere. From the moment we walked in, we felt the history and heart behind everything: the warm service, the beautifully prepared dishes, and the genuine love for great food. The lox, bagels, and classic Jewish deli favorites were simply outstanding — every bite was rich in flavor and soul. It was a privilege to joy this great place, and in its own way, it reminded us of the intensity and uniqueness of a Vulkaneifel experience: bold, grounded, and unforgettable. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates authenticity and timeless quality.
Truly one of my favourite places on planet earth. Been going here for years and it never disappoints. The food is legendary, and rightly so - top notch ingredients and lots of care go into everything. Equally impressive is the aesthetic, a beautiful nod to the deli (but with Bloody Mary's!). Really can't say enough nice things about this place and the people who work there, it's an absolute must if you're visiting - and a place you'll go to again and again if you live here!
We had the most wonderful time. The best cream cheese and locks bagel I have ever had in addition to the best potato latke I have ever had. And note my bagel was gluten free, it was super emotional and amazing to be able to enjoy it at such a pivotal spot in the city. 🌆 It was absolutely incredible and it was so special to eat and be in a space so treasured by New Yorkers and so vital to the history of Jewish immigration and cookery. So wonderful that it’s female owned. You would feel the love and care in everything from the food to the decor. The staff were so welcoming and informative and I am so grateful I got to go. The classic bagel and lox was sensational as were the latkes (added the luxury of salmon roe and it was so worth it, highly recommend!). This place deserves every star, moon, whatever award it seeks to get. I do recommend going early as there are no reservations. Otherwise, enjoy at your fullest! ✨💖
Great brunch option on the LES. During peak hours you will wait 45mins to an hour, but it was worth it. I’d wait longer for the goat cream cheese and pastrami cured salmon. The hot/cold cure salmon dip was fantastic. We also loved the eggs Benedict and the deviled eggs. It was not really clear on the menu but you can customize the open face sandwich boards, once I figured out that I asked for the goat cream cheese and the pastrami cured salmon instead of some of the standard options. Found the service to be a little slow, but we weren’t in a rush so it was fine.
Unquestionably my favorite restaurant for brunch style food. The best eggs Benedict I've ever had. Pickled herring is excellent. The service is great. I'm not from NYC, but I visit periodically. This is always a priority stop when I visit. Update: just visited again today and wanted to add a pic of the potato latkes. Again, I cannot overstate how extraordinary this place is. Every visit I walk away so impressed with the quality and taste. Second to none.
I cleaned my plates and for good reason. Everything was delicious! Busy lunch crowd waiting for tables. As a party of one I was able to sit at the bar immediately. Friendly bartender took great care of me. My food came out quickly. I thought I’d have leftovers. Nothing was left to tote away because it was all delicious. Q
Worth the wait (which you will)! It’s an expensive meal but you’re paying for quality. There’s a reason this establishment is thriving over 100 years later. Went with the traditional options and ordered the Classic boards (build your own smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel), Herring Trio, Potato Latkes, and Malt Egg Cream (no egg or cream!) and everything was delicious. Our server was also fantastic and the location is a modern take on the classic diner.
This legendary institution does not need another 5-star review, but it feels like the least I could do. The quality of the food is as good as advertised: fresh fish, fluffy bagels, light cream cheese, but what blew us away was the service. Sam, our waiter was genuine and affable and clearly cares that his customers have a great time. Everyone here takes pride in what they do, which is why this place has the reputation it does! Can’t wait to come back!
Sampled several smoked salmons; definitely order the caviar flight if you like caviar. Had to wait about an hour on a busy Saturday but there are a bunch of places nearby to check out while you wait. This place is 100% worth the wait though. Staff was also polite and patient despite how busy the restaurant was. Will definitely return if I return to NYC.
Amazing spot for New York deli food. The bagels and lox, latkes, and rugelach were all amazing. The atmosphere of the place was great; it felt like an old NYC diner but new and fresh at the same time. The service was incredibly pleasant and efficient, despite how busy the place was; my coffee cup was never empty. Will definitely be returning here when we are back in NYC.
I always forget what a gem this cafe is, and every time I come back I’m reminded how good everything is. The service is friendly and welcoming, too. Today I tried their desserts, and it turns out they’re incredible as well — the cheesecake and halva ice cream were excellent.
From the Netherlands we visited New York. Of the six mornings we were in New York, we had breakfast at Russ and Daughters five times. Almost every morning we chose, very European, the yogurt with fruit and granola (and coffee). Delicious! The staff was great: skilled and very friendly. As a farewell gift we got some delicious cookies and some Haagse hopjes. Very nice gesture. Russ and Daughters is highly recommended: 5 stars.
Best smoked salmon I’ve ever had. I ordered the Classic Board with poppyseed bagel. A definite must-try if you’re in the area. For dessert I had the chocolate French toast, which was lighter than I expected and fluffy. My other friends raved about the bread pudding. The atmosphere itself is clean and aesthetically pleasing. Staff are very friendly and timely.
One of the best places to enjoy American, Deli tasty fresh fish (Scottish salmon) and bagels 🥯 Hospitality and service are on the highest level. Btw this place is Michelin recommended and I totally agree with that. Perfect place for the lunch and brunch. We took platter IDA and it was served for 4 Recommendations Platter - the IDA SCOTTISH SMOKED SALMON, NORWEGIAN SMOKED SALMON, PASTRAMI-CURED SALMON, GRAVLAX Serves 3-4 | with CREAM CHEESE, ONION, TOMATO, CAPERS, PICKLES and BAGELS & BREAD BASKET Also added some more pics
Well designed place. Perfect atmosphere for each hour of the day. We’ve been there for brunch. They serve special cocktails and some home made sodas as well. We had the Eggs Benny, Red & Golden Beets, bagels with other sides and ginger soda. Everything was fresh and delicious. We didn’t make reservations in advance.
Last New York meal was here at Russ. First time eating a Jewish restaurant. Place was well reviewed so we gave it a shot. The salmon platter was fantastic. Fresh salmon. We enjoyed all of the dishes and it was a great way to end the trip on a full belly. Even for a Monday lunch, place was packed.
I wanted something simple so I went for the matzo ball soup and golden and red beet salad -- chef's kiss ♥️ My cousin got the classic salmon sandwich board. Everything was just amazing. Will come back on our next visit. **Note: Bc it's Jewish fare -- no meat other than the chicken in the matzo ball soup is listed** but we were ok with that.
Russ & Daughters Cafe has officially become one of my favorite breakfast spots in New York. I can’t believe it took me so long to visit, but I’m so glad I finally did — the breakfast was absolutely delightful. We had the matzo ball soup, some insanely good potato latkes with apple sauce and sour cream, and the bread basket, which was way bigger than expected. We couldn’t even finish it — so much bread for the price! My boyfriend had the everything bagel with eggs and salmon, plus the chive cream cheese, and he loved it. The service was incredible too. Super friendly staff that really made us feel welcome. This will definitely be a must-visit for me every time I’m in New York.
Need to vindicate this place from some of the gluten free reviews. Gluten free bagel was awesome. I got the special that was a brisket sandwich and put it on a gluten free everything bagel, which was 10/10. Deviled eggs with salmon roe and the halva ice cream were awesome. Great staple brunch spot!
This location doesn’t have quite the selection as the one in Houston, but there was no wait and I could sit down, both pluses on this rainy day. The classic on a bagel is my favorite thing here and this location is no different. Their Bagels are excellent. These are my favorite bagels in town and I’ve tried all the “best” bagel places I could get to. I even tried a black and white cookie on a friend’s recommendation and it was excellent as well. Service was fast and the restaurant was clean. I’ll be back.
Amazing spot for when you need more than a legit NY bagel. And the lox bagel is worth the rave. Food, service, and ambiance are all top notch. And if that wasn't enough, you can have a delicious ice-cream for breakfast. We were able to walk right up but it seems we beat a massive rush.
A pleasant upscale Jewish eatery that is clean and vibrant. Walking in you are greeted immediately. Service was great with knowledgeable staff able to explain the menu. Fish forward menu with tons of options for bagels and eggs too. Food was excellent and freshly prepared. Prices were on par for quality. Parking was available. Overall a nice place.
THE BEST. I ordered a LOX bagel sandwich and a chowder. The smoked salmon was nothing like I’ve ever eaten before. It was almost like sashimi, and it was so so good. But really, the chowder. wow. Probably one of the best chowders I’ve ever tasted. So much flavor from the fishes… We only ordered one and they kindly offered to split the bowl, which we truly appreciated, but i’m definitely eating the whole thing by myself next time! Their original blend coffee was also spectacular.
The iconic appetizing shop now has a sit-down cafe—and it's everything you hoped for. Bagels and lox, latkes, matzo ball soup—all incredible. The Classic Board with four types of fish, cream cheese, bagels feeds two easily. Gets packed, expect a wait. Worth it for that perfect bite of nova on a warm bagel with capers and onion. New York essential.
Really enjoyed our visit. Came sharp for breakfast. Enjoyed the Varnishkas (comfort food served with comfort food) and a bagel with lox. The coffee was nice and kept coming. Service was really friendly. I loved the look and the feel of the place, everybody in white uniforms and such. Lovely interior. Great option.
Russ & Daughters Cafe is a true New York classic that lives up to its legendary name. The food is comforting, nostalgic, and expertly prepared and the atmosphere feels warm and timeless, blending old-world charm with a lively Lower East Side energy. Service is friendly and efficient, even when it’s busy. A must-visit spot for anyone who wants to experience iconic Jewish deli cuisine done right.
Russ & Daughters is an absolute smoked-fish lover’s dream. Every single bite hits every damn time. The quality is unreal, the service is warm, and the whole experience is tradition done right. If you’re craving perfectly silky lox, briny pops of caviar, or that iconic schmear on the perfect bagel, this is the place. Always exceptional. Always worth it.
Ok COOK Rus & his highly highly skilled daughters. Wow. 10 stars. Don’t leave the continent of North America without trying the Kreplach. I’d sacrifice running water for a week to eat that again. The latkes are very good. The bagel & pastrami cured smoked salmon slapped. The coffee is really good coffee. But I repeat. The Kreplach. Get your hands on that asap pls. It has no business being that good. Their gluten free bagel is the best I’ve ever had. We got there 9:40am on a Saturday and waited around 35 minutes for a table (waitlist via text). Very reasonable. The service was top tier. Sorry to our server for my friend accidentally flexing her income. She didn’t understand your comment about the floor lol.
Had a fantastic time here. Showed up with no reservation, but another party hadn't shown up so we were able to take their table. Can't remember the name of our waiter, but he was fantastic. He recommended us the Daughters Platter, the Potato Latkes, the Kreplach, and his favourite - the Eggs Benny. We hadn't been to Russ & Daughters before so we decided to order everything he recommended. Everything was incredible! The smoked salmons, the Latkes (like a hashbrown), the Kreplach had fantastic brisket flavour, and the brioche bread really sold the Eggs Benny. The bread basket was lovely too. We finished all the dishes, which seemed perfect for a party of 5, and were too full for dessert!! Would highly recommend and will be returning next time we're in the city.
Literally the most top tier brunch in the Milky Way galaxy!!!! Kreplach was life changing. That is the MUST order!!! It was the perfect texture. Delish brisket. Caramelized to perfection. WOW!!!! The latkes were amazing, salmon roe went well with them (although I’d probs get the apple sauce and sour cream version next time). The bagel & pastrami cured fish is always a hit. R&D is just the finest institution and I will sing its praises till the end of time!!!!! The vibes inside are perfectly executed. The waiters are SO nice. We got so many fantastic recommendations. The atmosphere is immaculate. Feels like you’re transported in time. Walk ins only. I really respect that. For a group of 3, we waited 30 mins at 9:30am on a Sunday. No wonder this is NYT top 100 restaurants
Russ and Daughters has been feeding the Lower East Side since 1914 and the cafe on Orchard Street is the sit-down extension of everything that made the original appetizing shop legendary. The smoked salmon and cream cheese on a fresh bagel is perfection in its simplest form. The fish is silky the cream cheese is hand-whipped and the bagel has that perfect New York density that you cannot find anywhere else on earth. I have eaten bagels in a hundred cities and nothing comes close to what Russ and Daughters puts on the plate. The matzo ball soup is the benchmark warming golden with a matzo ball that is fluffy and dense at the same time which should be impossible but here we are. The egg cream is a New York institution and they make it the old-fashioned way. The room is simple and bright with tiles and a counter that pays respect to the original shop without trying to be a museum. This is living history. Four generations of the Russ family have kept this standard and the fact that the line is still out the door more than a century later tells you everything about quality and commitment. New York food culture starts here. Not at the trendy spots that open and close every year. Here at the place that has been doing one thing better than anyone else for over a hundred years. That is the standard. That is Russ and Daughters.

Look, I’m not mad about it but I’m not over the moon extatique! I think I need to go back and re try some different items. All I can say is was decent. What I got: Pickle platter 10/10 Lox platter: 7/10 Bagel was mid (take into account I am from Montreal, so could not be the same as an NYC local). Would have like one more slice of lox. Will for sure come back and try some other dishes.
I really do love this place but why can’t they have better bagels?? I ordered the classic board and the nova was excellent, but the bagel itself was like a 3/10. A few other negatives: this may be nit picky but I wanted my bagel toasted and it was barely even warmed, although the nova was generous, the toppings for the bagel were really limited. They gave such a small portion of cream cheese, like why? The vibe of the restaurant is great, almost feels warm and homey, and the servers were all super friendly. The food was not bad, but definitely not the best bagel and lox in the city. Come here for the vibe and atmosphere, and maybe an egg cream, but don’t expect to be “wowed.”
This was a nice spot with lots of tasty brunch and lunch options. The pastrami russ and latkes were both very tasty. Matzo ball soup has chicken noodle base, which is a personal favorite! The bagel and lox was just ok - salmon was a bit thick and stringy for my taste. I'm glad I tried this spot and would recommend it, but probably wouldn't return as there are so many great brunch, deli, and bagel spots around!
Went here on a Wednesday to accompany a visiting friend. Apparently the place is highly recommended online. Pros for me are: great atmosphere and very friendly staff. The place is a little cramped though. We ordered the Classic board which I would not order again. It is an expensive deconstructed bagel- you will have to assemble yourself, and sadly it's not the best one I've had. I think this is not something i should have ordered here. I asked for it to be toasted but by the time it got to me it was barely even warm. Their menu is just the right size and I really regret not ordering something else. This is more like a sit down restaurant and I felt weird eating a bagel there. Id consider going back to try the other items tho.
Since I found out about this place it has been on my list to try. I am happy I got to finally come and try it. The customer service was very nice and welcoming. I enjoyed the classic sandwich with the bagel and smoked salmon lox as well as the noodle kugel. Everything was fresh and well prepared. I definitely would like to come back and try the other dishes on the menu.
TLDR: Stopped by for a quick bite on my last day in NYC before leaving. What I ordered was just okay but service was really good. Curious to try their other things in the deli versions of their store. -[WHITEFISH POTATO CROQUETTES] $15 🥔 The filling itself was interesting as it was a mixture of whitefish and potato all served on a bed of tartar sauce 🧂 I will say it was decently filling but definitely too salty for me :( 📝 Our server was the man tending bar and he was super kind and made recommendations as well as happily answered all of our questions about the menu/serving size etc.
Came here for a classic NYC Jewish appetizing experience and it delivered! The food is outstanding—got the Gaspe Nova lox on an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, capers, tomato, and onion. The salmon was perfectly sliced, silky, and not overly salty; hands down some of the best lox I've had in the city. Latkes were crispy on the outside, tender inside, and the chocolate babka French toast we added was a decadent treat (rich, caramely, worth the indulgence). Service was friendly and attentive—servers in those classic white coats know the menu inside out and made great recommendations. Quick to refill waters and check in without hovering. Atmosphere feels nostalgic and cozy, like a step back in time to old-school Lower East Side with a clean, retro diner vibe. It's pretty compact though, so it can get loud and a bit crowded—seats fill up fast, especially on weekends. Not the most spacious or quiet spot if you're looking for a long, relaxed linger. Overall, totally worth it for the quality of the smoked fish and that iconic Russ & Daughters legacy. Will be back for more!
Not worth for the price. Apollo Bagels is better, esp for the bagel quality :/ - Bagel & lox ($31 after tax and tip): 8/10, it was good but not $31 worth good. I don’t remember which lox I got. Lowkey felt like I got robbed in broad daylight lol. The fish quality was good but highkey same as Apollo Bagel’s. Everything bagel was standard
the food is excellent. I ordered the bialy sandwich with pastrami-smoked salmon. they come deconstructed. the fresh dill really kicked this up a notch. I also had the latkes which were delicious.…
Great omelette with great ingredients and beautiful presentation Good natural orange juice, truly Good seating system
The menu is an interesting update of classic deli specials. My friend and I had the whitefish salad with wasabi infused roe, on a toasted bagel. Deelish! coffee is excellent and best was the serv…
Although they take no reservations, a walk around the neighborhood for 45 minutes until our table was ready kept us occupied. The food was excellent, atmosphere unique, and a place we would visit a…
Came here after hearing and seeing so much hype. For all the chatter and rave reviews, the food was underwhelming to say the least. Ordered a toasted bagel with Lox which came on a wooden platter with onions, capers and salmon. The bagel was NOT toasted as requested and there were a measly two slices of salmon and some tomatoes with cream cheese. They also forgot the egg i had asked for. Also ordered hot coffee which was decent. The ambience was as expected, that of an old school NY diner and it was defined busy. Service was average as got seating at the counter. The hostess was very kind and polite. I genuinely feel like several bodegas have bagel sandwiches that are SO much better than this place. The menu is overly pretentious and complicated (imho). Paid $30 for the above… could have gotten a MUCH better meal with 1/4th the price at another ‘no-frills’ place and would have been much happier. Feel like this is a tourist trap and most likely not come back again based on the experience…
Over the years, Russ and daughters would pop up on articles I’ve read and movies about New Yorkers. Finally, I got to go and eat there. I had the potato latkes with Salmon roe and crème fraîche. That was absolutely delicious. However, I was disappointed with their bagel. I had a sesame seed bagel with cream cheese, and it was below sub par. They need to change their bagel vendor 100 %. They probably froze and Reheated the bagels. They were beyond terrible.
extremely disappointing. was really looking forward to this but the bagels were just simply not that great. we ordered the classic everything bagel with salmon, and the only saving grace is the cream cheese, which was light airy and fluffy. the bagel was dense and chewy (which is good) but lacked flavour or fragrance (weird way to describe but it was just pretty plain) like the everything seasoning didn't do much. the salmon, while good, was only three pieces. the whole board is $22, i guess you pay for ambience or this is just NYC price. it was also a 45min to 1 hour wait time on a thurs morning at 10:40am which was pretty disconcerting considering how mid the food is. or maybe we just ordered the wrong thing? potato latkes were nothing to shout about, pretty average imo. they were crispy and light but I would skip them. overall, the food dampened the whole dining experience, perhaps their other stores have better bagels. i'm pretty sure new york has better bagels to offer, and i would like to know any other recommendations to make up for this disappointing experience. the ambience and service were really the saving grace, and the cream cheese.
Got the salmon lox bagel, it is 25 freaking dollars!!!! First off the presentation of this bagel is the most pretentious thing I’ve ever seen. It comes deconstructed and on a wooden plank, like dude I paid $25 for this and you can’t even put it together? Once you do the labor in putting it together and eating it, it’s pretty good. Definitely not worth $25, but it’s a good bagel sandwich. On top of all this we had to wait a half hour in order to have the privilege to pay $25 for a bagel. Maybe I’m going crazy but I do not see the appeal here unless your toilet is made of solid gold. Also the dude at the bar seating who served us was rude and just not welcoming at all, garbage service.
very expensive and the baguel wasn`t very good. I ate better ones! I went to take lunch, it wa very tentation, but I had a desilution
Save your time and money and don’t eat here. The wait wasn’t bad on New Year’s Day, they said a half hour and it was about 20 minutes total. We were excited for the food given the Anthony Bourdain endorsement, but it was incredibly disappointing. The kreplach was the only saving factor, it was delicious but the bagels and the Pastrami Russ were under mediocre. The gluten free bagel should not be called a bagel. I’m an advocate for if you can’t do it well, don’t do it at all. The gluten free bagel was crumbly, dense, dry, and flavorless. From the first bite I was disappointed. (On the left in the overhead photo, in the front in the other photo) The pastrami salmon was not particularly interesting in flavor and there was hardly any of it. The bites largely tasted of sauerkraut. The pickle was actually bad, I couldn’t eat it. My partner said the pretzel bagel was just fine, absolutely nothing special. Neither of us finished our food. For $25 a bagel, it was incredibly disappointing. Overpriced and overhyped, I wouldn’t send anyone here.
