Opinions de Spicy Moon New York
So good, I’ve taken so many anti vegans here and they love it. I’m not vegan myself but keep coming back here for more!! Such friendly staff as well. Highlights include Dan Dan noodles and the chopped cheese spring rolls. Don’t sleep on those two!
Went for a quick lunch while visiting Washington Sq park on a blistering Sunday. Greeted very nicely. Cool and unique vibe on the inside…I liked it. Inviting and relaxing. Lots of customers. Seems mostly like NYU folks…good energy! Food was served quickly. The Szechuan fried rice was to die for, the crispy eggplant was amazing and the spring rolled fresh and well made. Many time fried rice is stale, probably from sitting around for a bit before being served to customers, not at Spicy Moon! One can taste the freshness. Very happy customer. Spicy Moon almost Veganfied me (a flexitarian)…thank you S&M…;) Will be back. ✌🏽💗🙏🏽
Very good chinese/americanized vegan chinese. Good vibes inside. Prime vegan location. Food is great. A little bit expensive, just like all the other vegan restaurant in the area.
Vegan dishes at its best! I am in love with this place. Food served here is amazingly delicious. Went gaga over Kung pao tofu and Dan Dan noodle. Ambience- 4/5 Quality- 5/5 Taste- 5/5 Cleanliness- 3/5 Wait time- lunch hours is ok, for dinner is a lot, so better do reserve before the visit Seating spaces- not too less, manageable Drinks: They do serve a good variety of drinks including vodka(grey goose), beers, etc. Fruit punch (non-alcoholic) is a must try. Prefer inside seating as we didn’t have a good experience for outside seating due to flies hovering around delicacies.
After trying unsuccessfully to get into the East Village location without a reservation, this time, I made a res and decided to try it in the West Village. Overall, great food. I couldn’t resist trying the Dan Dan Noodles, which were fantastic, and they set the tone for what was to come – dumplings and a delightful tofu/vegetable dry pot dish. My companion, who is Chinese, very much approved of the vegan interpretation of Chinese classics. And while I understand that this place is super popular and deservedly gets lots of business, limiting our time there to only one hour seems a bit too strict to me. Also, because it gets so crowded, it also gets quite noisy so if you want a quieter experience, try going earlier, like five or six.
I love their food. I have been ordering from them for 2 years . The spices are amazing but it was my first time eating in the restaurant. My table wasn’t good. I was on slope and was practically seating with another couple. Not romantic, kinda no space. My drink ( a beer ) came 20 min after I arrived. I am going to keep ordering to go. It is maybe better if you are a larger group. They had a booth In the middle that looked cool. Probably not going on a date there again.
Pleasantly surprised by this place! I’m not vegan or vegetarian but I went with a friend who is. The dishes all had some twist to it but still managed to taste authentic. The hen of the woods mushroom bun was really crispy and delicious, probably my favorite of the things we ordered. We also got chili wontons, pea shoots, turnip cake, and stir fried rice cakes which were a lunar new year special.
Wow!!! I definitely know why Spicy Moon is voted best vegan Asian food in the country!! Everything I had was absolutely delicious! The staff was very friendly at the bar and offered their recommendations, the space was beautifully decorated, and the food came out quickly. I loved my experience here and can't wait to try new things. Their ragoons are sooo delicious along with their Dan Dan noodles! Can't wait to come back!
🍜 Dan Dan Noodles - a must try and I also got impossible beef in it. It was perfectly spicy and flavorful 🍽 Tofu Bun - this was a bit bland and dry so it can be skipped! 🍽 curry puff -the filling was delicious with potatoes and spices! I love the vegan Szechuan spin here. Fast casual dining spot. Dishes are pricey but this spot should be a must if you enjoy vegan food!
Love that there are over 40 delicious items and I can eat all of them. My favorite was the mar por tofu. The chili is strong but that’s why it’s good. The cucumbers served cold was also really lovely. We ordered a lot of food and I had the best left overs the next day. No frills interior but the vibe is hip with great music. Sustainability rating: 3 out of 5. Reusable serving ware is used. Not sure if they compost.
Was a really great experience! Highly recommend the dan dan noodles (that’s what they are known for). The mushroom bao bun we got too was also delish. Everything was reasonably priced and quite an extensive menu so plenty to try. Recommend if you’re looking for a vegan restaurant in the west village
This place was small as you walked in, but don't let that take you away from its AMAZING vegan food. Even the drinks were great. There were so many options to choose from, and I'm not a foodie but had to try a little of everything due to the fact that it was all so delicious. The dessert at the end of the whole entire meal was to die for. I recommend bringing a crowd of people so you can try a bit of everything. The food was that great!
This is one of my favorite vegan spots in the city. The portions are super generous and filling— I always have to take a box home. Their lunch special is reasonably priced relative to nearby places. I usually get the Dan Dan noodles (a little spicy but not too much) and the fried veggie dumplings.
Again, this place never disappoints, however I was a bit bummed about the seating arrangements. Where we were seated was very closed in and other people were too close for comfort. Not to mention the tables were too small to accommodate what we ordered. Aside from that the food was good, not as bomb as I remembered on our first visit but I still left a bit satisfied. The fruit punch was AMAZING!! The Veggie ramen was ok, it honestly didn’t even seem like ramen noodles but more like spaghetti noodles which was weird. The fried rice was a bit on the watery side and the General Tso mushrooms were the saving grace for the rice. When I looked back on my photos from my first visit, I realized that I’d been jippeped of my vegetables like I got the time before. The mushrooms were really good in the Ramen and the Bao Buns were iight…… We did asked to be seated outside but they said that they didn’t have enough servers for that, however, we saw folks eating outside but hey.
Look, I LOVE meat just like many others, so to give a vegan restaurant 5 stars means this place absolutely blew me away. I was told this was one of the best vegan spots in NYC so I was coerced into trying it with some friends. This is insane. Food is unbelievable, drinks are good, and for New York, prices are fair. The food is also quite filling and you will leave here satisfied and pay about $25 if you share different items. We started off with some general tso’s mushrooms. This was my favorite dish of the night. The mushrooms are perfectly breaded and fried and then covered with a sweet and savory sauce. The fried mushrooms keep their texture and crunch even with the sauce which is unbelievable. This dish is a must and you may want to order multiple (one order is good for 2 people). We then had the sour cream and onion potato dumplings. These dumplings were super tender, and the inside hits you with extremely soft potatoes and a huge sour cream and onion flavor. It’s almost like someone converted the well known flavor of chip into a dumpling. Incredible. 5 pieces to an order. Now the cumin fries. I was hesitant as I expect fries to be very bland and boring. These were anything but that. The fries were coated with a tasteful amount of cumin powder and served with a sweet aioli-like sauce. They were crispy, crinkle cut fries. One order is pretty massive and could be good for up to 4 people when sharing. Now for the Dan Dan noodles. Wow. This flavor is unreal - umami, sweet, savory, salty…everything you could ever want. The noodles themselves are cooked perfectly Al dente. They were still bouncy and chewy while also being able to grasp the sauce. Finally, mapo tofu. One of the dishes I was unsure of the quality without the usual pork addition. I was stunned. This tofu was so soft and fresh, and it was served in a beautiful sauce with mouth numbing Szechuan peppercorns. The sensation is wonderful and the tingling mouth and lips provides an enjoyable and unique experience while eating it. Plain white rice is not included. It is $1.95 per bowl and definitely worth it if you are eating the mushroom or tofu dish. For drinks, get either the New Moon mojito or the Spicy Moon. Overall, even if this place wasn’t vegan, it would easily be one of my favorite restaurants here in the city. Being vegan just elevates this to another level.
LOVE LOVE this place ! Been here few times now and have enjoyed every time. So many delicious options for sharing… highly recommend the dry pot style, mala noodle soup and the chili glass noodles. Definitely a more vibrant and crowded atmosphere, but service is soo quick and always leave happy (: this is one of my favourite spots for vegetarian delights
Pure vibes here. Had a great dinner before a comedy show nearby. Good service and atmosphere were amazing, 10/10. Wish we had room in our stomach to try more menu options but the portions are big, so we shared one main and a side and were stuffed! Made for an inexpensive dinner out which was perfect!! Will return.
Possibly...no, definitely the best scallion pancake I've ever had. Very comfortable and lots of space for solo diners to eat at the bar on an otherwise fully booked Wednesday night. Can also recommend the cocktails (having more than one increased the price of an otherwise reasonably priced meal.) A good place to bring non-vegans/vegetarians to introduce them to what a good meatless meal is like.
Absolutely my all-time favourite restaurant. Every dish and mocktail is on a whole other level of taste and uniqueness. Just a few of my many favourites at Spicy Moon include the Dan Dan noodles, avocado spring rolls, cumin fries, addictive brussels sprouts, sesame balls...I could go on and on. Also the best vibe ever with a great music playlist, professional pleasant service, and beautiful compassionate artwork about our friends the animals. An INCREDIBLE place.👌💚
Spicy moon maintains its consistency. Have been to the one in bowery earlier and this one matches the expectations and raises the bar. Stired fried rice noodles, spicy tofu bun with chilli oil are the must haves. The staff is very polite and attentive, special thanks to Ole and Jorge at the bar! Will visit again.
Walking in alone, I was blessed by such good energy from the hostess Kaydeen. She accommodated my complicated seating needs, and made me feel welcomed. I ordered half of the menu to taste with a friend of mine, and every dish was made exceptionally well. The Dan Dan noodles weren't as spicy as I expected, but just enough to be an enjoyable spicy dish. The rest of the staff was also nice and welcoming, but Kaydeen went so above and beyond, I'd come back for just her! Such a wonderful experience. Highly recommend.
One of the best Szechuan and Chinese Vegan restaurants near NYU. We went on for lunch on a weekday, so the restaurant was almost empty, but I would recommend reserving on the weekends. The staff is very good and attentive. We ordered - 1) Vegetable Wonton in Chili Oil (5/5) 2) Dan Dan Noodles (5/5) 3) Ginger Lychee Refresher (5/5) Will definitely visit this place again the next time we are in the area.
I was dubious at first a) it’s all vegan b) the food came out the fastest I’ve ever seen. Boy what a surprise. I kept ordering till we could not eat another thing. Brussels sprouts , scallion pancake , vegan duck wrap , crab less Rangoon, char siu Shiitake bun , hen of the woods mushroom bao bun, general tso vegetables. We’re out of this world. Service was friendly and fun. I highly recommend this restaurant. Do it !
The pink and green theme gave off such a cute, sexy vibe - felt like I was at a bar. The vegan dishes were shockingly delicious without any overpowering bean flavors, really showcasing their ability to capture flavors well. For me, the food packed a nice kick of spice that was addictively tasty, not overpowering. The friendly staff topped off a great experience💖
Regardless of if you are vegan or not, you are going to love the dishes at Spicy Moon. The flavours pop, and not just because of chilly. They seem to use a mix of spices, pickles, etc to create great flavors. The dishes are small, tapas style almost, so each person can order at least two and you can try a variety. We had the mushroom bun, dandan noodles, 🥑 spring roll, and vegetable dumpling in spicy chili oil, all were super yummy. The restaurant is cosy, and the service is attentive. A must go!
Was recommended by a friend, now I recommend to ppl who wanna try Asian vegan food. The comment is based on a non-vegan person (me.) I came with my vegetarian friend for lunch and we enjoyed the meal a lot! The food is delicious in general. I personally not like food that is trying to mimic meat, so we skipped all dishes like that, focusing on veg and tofu. ❤️🔥My favorite is Dan Dan noodles which is mild spicy. ✨Scallion pancake was good as well. My friend liked the spicy tofu bun the most. The fried mushroom bun was good too! So did the steamed veg dumplings..
Everything's ADDICTIVE! The sweet walnut edamame nuggets, scallion pancakes, peppercorn brussels sprouts, legendary Dan Dan noodles etc. etc. ... it's all 10/10 on flavour and freshness. And the mocktails are a masterpiece. I also love the atmosphere -- nice art, animal-friendly messaging, good music. Spicy Moon's literally my favourite restaurant of all time. 👌
# Restaurant Review: Spicy Moon Spicy Moon offers surprisingly authentic Chinese cuisine in a modern, club-like atmosphere. Located in the upper SoHo area, this restaurant delivers on flavor while catering to a younger, trendy crowd. ## Food Quality: ★★★★☆ The Dan Dan noodles were exceptional - perfectly balanced with excellent pickled mustard, scallions, and just the right amount of peanut flavor and spice. Not greasy at all, with clean flavors that would satisfy even the most discerning Chinese food enthusiast. The Mapo Tofu was impressively authentic with strong doubanjiang (black fermented bean paste) notes that highlighted its traditional preparation. Both dishes featured generous portions and well-calibrated spice levels that provided heat without overwhelming the other flavors. The only critique would be that the dishes were slightly over-salted, particularly the Mapo Tofu. Additionally, the Mapo Tofu doesn't automatically come with rice (which needs to be ordered separately), and the rice-to-tofu ratio provided was insufficient for the saucy dish. ## Ambiance: ★★☆☆☆ The restaurant features a modern, "clubby" atmosphere with loud music and extremely dim lighting. Most of the illumination comes from windows, creating inconsistent lighting throughout the space. The colorful dining accessories (green chopsticks and pink napkins) add a playful touch, but the overall darkness makes navigation challenging. The environment clearly targets a younger crowd seeking a trendier dining experience, which creates an interesting juxtaposition with the authenticity of the cuisine. ## Value: ★★★★☆ At a price point of $$, Spicy Moon offers excellent value. The portions are generous, and the quality of the food exceeds expectations for the cost. Two main dishes were sufficient to leave two diners feeling completely satisfied. ## Final Thoughts Spicy Moon presents an interesting dichotomy - extraordinarily authentic Chinese cuisine served in a modern, club-like setting. The quality of the food is the standout feature here, making it worth visiting despite the ambiance potentially not appealing to all diners. For those seeking authentic flavors without the traditional restaurant setting, Spicy Moon is an excellent choice. Considering the excellent food quality, take-out might be the ideal option for those who prefer a quieter dining experience. Recommended for: Young diners, date nights, and authentic Chinese food enthusiasts who don't mind the vibey atmosphere.
Truly phenomenal food, though a bit pricey for the atmosphere. Cannot express the joy of a fully vegan Chinese menu!!! Can’t wait to go back and try everything else. (The herbal iced tea pictured here is listed as “lightly sweetened” - but even as someone who loves sweet drinks, I had to water it down a lot because it was extremely sweet.)
Amazing! The vibe is so cool! The staff is lovely. The menu is extensive. I got the cumin tofu for the first time and it was potentially life changing.
Absolutely LOVE this place. The west village location has more space imo and cute outdoor seating! I am not vegan, am in no way vegan, and never will be vegan, but this place is THAT good that I’ll recommend it to anyone who will listen. Green beans are a MUST. The best green beans I’ve ever had. Their kung pao mixed veggies is also incredible. Cumin fries are also a must. Mapo tofu is delish and reminds me of my time in China. Everything is just really authentic and super flavorful!! Please go, I promise it’s worth it.
First time adventuring by myself in New York City by myself. With myself being vegan and NYC being a cultural hotspot, Spicy Moon was one of the first results on a google search. Went during lunch and boy did it not disappoint. Dan Dan bowl with the vegan chicken and spring roll side def hit the spot. I’m afraid I won’t be hungry for the rest of the day because I am FULL. Michael was the bartender servicing the bar (which is where I was sitting), was very attentive and made my visit all the more better. I noticed that there were some clinically critical reviews regarding this place. Ignore them. The portions are more than adequate, and deducting stars for things that are completely out of the restaurant’s and staff’s hands is ignorant to the nuances of working in the service industry. 10/10 would recommend to even the most critical vegan diners.
Dec 6, 2024 The Dan Dan Noodles are among the top 3 greatest noodles I've had in my life - I will be searching for that noodle flavor everywhere now. I was warned by my cousin that these noodles were good, but was still left astonished when I actually tasted them. The Spicy Pot and the Buns (dpicy tofu and another I can't recall) were as good as I expected them to be.
A must-visit vegan place!!! It's really cool next to Washington sq park. It's super crowded even on weekdays and has a really cool vibe. They have both indoor and outdoor sitting and I highly recommend you make reservations ahead of time. The staff is very friendly and was able to customize all the changes. We loved the food and is decently priced. Also, the position is great and is enough to be shared with your friends. Definitely, a place I'm visiting again.
We tried coming here once before but the wait was too long. We were lucky this time to get there when it was fairly empty & it did not disappoint. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I like to try the options when they're available. We got the spicy wontons which were delicious. I wouldn't say they were too spicy, but just perfect. We also got the general tso's cauliflower and it was my favorite! The sauce on top was amazing and I like that they drizzle it throughout the portion (there's a lot) so that every piece has some on it. We also got the dan dan noodles which were good. My boyfriend loved them, but I personally didn't love the texture of them. The sauce was kind of gritty but the taste was good. I think the prices were great for the portion sizes and the fact that it's vegan food in the city. Overall, I loved it & look forward to going back!
It was my first time & I can't stop raving about it to my friends. The wontons in chili oil was my fave. I tried Dan Dan noodles based on the other reviews. They were delicious but rich; I wished I had something pickled or raw to balance it out. The mushroom bun was good though I would try a different dish next time. Server was quick and friendly. Cute interior and plating. 1 tiny but clean restroom available for patrons. I love that it's vegan!! Wish they would offer non-plastic bags for leftovers but it's ok to go without. The Dan Dan noodles were great as leftovers and did not leak in the container!
This is the best vegan restaurant and one of my favorites, and I’ve only tried two of their items - the Dan Dan noodles and the chili oil wontons. Both are incredible, unique flavors. The food is such a standout at this establishment. I’ve brought multiple people here with me and they’ve all been so amazed by the food as well. I will definitely be coming back. The service is also very kind, they brought us hot jasmine tea refills which was fantastic! You must try the dan dan noodles!
Spicy moon was a wonderful experience overall. The food was fantastic and we can’t wait to have it again! The drinks were creative and the bar staff was very attentive. Our server at our table was a little harder to get a hold of and always seemed to be in a rush whenever he was around, but overall we had a wonderful time. We recommend the Dan Dan noodles and the Kung Pao Tofu! We are looking forward to returning!
Im from Montreal and hadn’t been to Spicy Moon since my last visit to NYC in 2022. I remembered it being really good so my expectations were high. I’m pleased to say the food and service surpassed my expectations. I came twice on our 3 day trip. My wife and I were travelling with our 15 month old daughter and the staff was very accommodating. I believe our server was named « Kalil », he was very friendly, professional and recommended us the Kung Pao style tofu and DanDan noodles. Both we so good. Since being vegan for about 10 years this was possibly the best tofu dish I’ve had. I can’t wait to come back to Spicy Moon.
I and my spouse are a big fan of this place. The attached photos are from our 4th visit to Spicy Moon, we are addicted to this food! Their Dan Dan noodles are our all time favorite and we visit often just craving for it. This time we tried Curry style, and it was just amazing, we loved tofu and veggies and in curry taste made out of coconut milk. Definitely must try Schezuan food in NYC, and of course the go to for vegans!
Our dinner at Spicy Moon was delicious. We tried Dan Dan Noodles that had a nice flavor profile to it and not spicy for us. We also tried Veg Steamed Dumplings that were good and Veg Lo Mein, which had more of sweet profile and Veg Fried Rice which was good too. The interesting appetizer was Taro Fries, which was thinly sliced and deep fried. They also drizzled some honey on these fries which was pretty delicious. In short, the food and service were pretty good and I would definitely recommend. Edit - Made a second visit with my friend and we enjoyed our dinner again. Each dish was delicious.
Spicy Moon is a total gem. From the moment you step in, the chilled vibes and great music set the perfect mood. The Chopped Cheese Spring Rolls are an absolute must—crispy, savory, and the dipping sauce? Incredible. The Dane Noodles are packed with fiery flavor, and the General Tso's Mushrooms have the perfect crunch with a juicy, umami punch. What really stood out, though, was the service. Sayeed was friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. The whole experience left me thinking, I might need to relocate just to have access to this place more often. Highly recommend this spot — you won’t regret it!
Spicy Moon did not disappoint! The flavors were bold and delicious — I truly enjoyed my experience here. It’s a cute, cozy space with a great vibe. The host at the front was extremely kind and welcoming. The food? So good — as you can see, we basically cleared the plates! I did have one issue with an eggplant dish that was unfortunately inedible for me, but the server handled it gracefully and took it off the bill right away, which I really appreciated. The energy of the space was everything. It started pouring rain after our meal, and they kindly let us wait inside — we chilled out and enjoyed their playlist, which was soooooooo GOOD. The ladies working there were absolutely fabulous. The men in shirts? Let’s just say they could use a touch more Junoesque charm 😄. Overall: amazing food, great vibes, and kind service. Would definitely return!
I found this place via online recommendation when I searched for vegetarian restaurants and I have to say that I was delightfully surprised at the flavors I got to experience here. The dishes are typically cooked with tofu and mushroom and you can have vegan add ons for a little extra . I bought the chicken and broccoli and the chili glass noodles with vegan beef. The chicken and broccoli sauce was a bit sweet but my favorite part was the crunch of the cauliflower and the dish was still very tasty. The chili glass noodles were not as spicy as I expected them to be but they packed a slight punch and highly recommend this dish if you want something spicier. I can’t wait to come back and try out more of the dishes here.
The only place that could turn me vegan! Love the dandan noodles so much! The wantons do not disappoint every time. Spice levels are great and do not overpower the dish. The mango cocktail is amazing and delicious. It was my second time here and unfortunately they had a power outage that disrupted operations causing a hold up in orders. Staff was apologetic but quickly got our order as soon as everything was fixed. Food came out swiftly which was great!

This spot should rank higher in reviews. The people here appear genuinely caring. The experience exceeded expectations. These dishes create food flashbacks. This spot offers an inviting atmosphere.

Had the Dan Dan noodles and the fried eggplant. They say small plates, but either could have been a meal. Loved the joint and can't wait to go back
If you can look past the unapologetically glowing-pink aesthetic you may be rewarded with the best vegan meal you can remember having! Not sure how fastidiously authentic to Sichuanese style the cooking is, but that's ok: The Dan Dan noodles with beyond beef checked all the boxes, and we liked the kung Pao style tofu despite it reading very sweet/American-style to me (was a great counterpoint to the heat of Dan Dan noodles). The veggie dumplings were good both fried or steamed with a slight preference for the fried - the dumpling dough is thick[er than I've come to expect for most Chinese dumplings] and holds up great to a little browning.
We visited Spicy Moon in the West Village and had an amazing experience! Despite accidentally reserving for the wrong day, the accommodating staff quickly seated us in their cozy space. Service was impressively fast, with dishes arriving in under 10 minutes. The Kung Pao Tofu and Vegetable Wontons in Chili were standout dishes, bursting with flavors.
What's with knocking off one of the stars? The beer was not served cold enough! Come on! When it's hot and sticky in New York, you have to serve your beer ice cold! It's a sin not to. I would've told the waiter but he was busy chatting it up with some people at another table. Let's talk about the food. YUMMY! Albeit a bit spicier than I prefer, but man, it was tasty! For appetizer, we got the fried dumpling and that was good. I ordered the DanDan Noodles. It was simply prepared - just noodles topped with something I didn't recognize and smothered in that peanut-y, spicy sauce. My husband ordered the Szechuan Veggie Fried Rice and that was intensely hot, but he likes it spicy so he loved it. Overall, minus the beer not being cold, it was a good dinner. We will definitely be back! There are tons of other stuff on the menu I'd like to try.
They have multiple locations in nyc. Went here for Saturday dinner and had made reservations. They were taking walk ins as well. Inside seating was a bit dark and too loud. Tried their signature Mapo tofu which was not that great. The star dish was vegetable wontons in chilli oil. Kung pao tofu and veggies was amazing with the perfect crisp. Tried both steamed and fried dumplings. Liked the fried ones better. Dan Dan noodles were also one of their must try. If going back in I would definitely order kung pao and wontons in chilli oil. They have a decent cocktail menu as well, and drinks were pretty nice.
Had such a fun time going here with my cousin who knows all the best places and as a vegan this was superb. Love the atmosphere and aesthetics! Next time will need to get some spicy vegan mayo and pickles and red bean or moon cake. We had the fried mushroom bao, shared the dandan noodles which were mildly spicy but perfect and I’d never had dandan noodles before and the kung pao
Walked in for lunch on Monday afternoon around 2:30 and we were seated right away. The place was packed to 60% capacity and still had some indoor seating available while the indoor area was fairly empty. Service felt a little slow this particular day, and the 2 beers that I picked from their list weren't available. While the staff was apologetic, the recommended replacement wasn't really great (no wonder they still had some in stock)! For food, we ordered a couple of things which included Crabless Rangoon ($11.95), Vegetable Wonton in Chili Oil ($9.95), Fried Vegetable Dumplings ($8.95), Dan Dan Noodles ($12.95), and Peppercorn Brussel Sprouts ($10.95). What felt like too much food, was easily consumed by the 2 of us, and we are light eaters. Food was ok, nothing exceptional about it, but good enough to try it again one more time! Service improved towards the end of our stay, and overall, we had a pretty good experience. We will return again.
For appetizer and drinks, we ordered vegetable wonton in chilly oil and Thai iced tea. Both were amazing. One must try the dumplings. For the main course we ordered Dan Dan noodles and Mapo Tofu. The noodles were very flavorful. Coming to Mapo tofu, the tofu was as soft as butter. It was dissolving in our mouth. But the gravy was very bland and salty. So didn’t like it much. The serving portion is huge and the service is quick. We ordered everything at once and they brought all the items together within 10 mins. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and would definitely go again to try other dishes.
Spicy moon is a great place for some good vegan food! All the chicken dishes taste like actual real meat, and it doesn’t feel like you’re eating vegan meat. The vegan meat dishes I tried which were the kung pao style and the chicken and broccoli which were bursting with flavor and truly delicious. They had a good mix of the sauces in it. Their French fries were also really great and flavorful. Service was alright and our food came out fairly quickly. The prices are alright and moderate. It’s not too expensive nor was it really affordable, just in between. The decor of the place is also nice and fun, I liked the pink theme that they had going. I have to come back here to try their noodles. Price: $28.00💸 Rating: 8/10📝
Spicy moon delivered at a level in line with my expectations for vegan food. As a non vegan I would definitely recommend as an inclusive option for your leaf loving friends or partner. The drinks were solid, ambience inviting and service friendly. Highlights were the scallion pancake, general tso’s chicken and the spicy wontons.
As pure vegetarians this pure vegan Chinese restaurant In Lower Manhattan was a bliss for us. Authentic Szechuan & Chinese Dishes. And great taste. Nice clean cozy place.
It's a quirky and inviting restaurant for cozy dinner. Highly recommend for vegetarians / vegans. The Dan Dan noodles are must order and chilli oil wantons were also good. Staff will nicely help to toss and mix noodles in front of you. Staff is really helpful and recommends food as per your taste.
The duck wraps, dumplings in chili oil, and the dry pepper/pot-style big bites are repeat favorites — consistently flavorful and satisfying. Appreciate their seasonal desserts, especially the moon cakes they brought out around October–November this year. Always a reliable, delicious stop.
Good vegan spot in the city. We were seated at a small, wobbly table placed on a steel plate right in the middle of a busy pathway — not ideal, especially since most of the staff had to pass by us constantly. It’s not the staff’s fault, of course, just an unfortunate spot (kind of a blind spot next to the bathroom and far from the larger tables). That said, the food was good! Highlight of the night: The Kung Pao Veggies — absolutely delicious. The fried tofu was amazing, and the mix of tempura-fried veggies tossed in a sweet and spicy gochujang-based sauce really hit the spot. Dumplings in Chilli Oil: 2.5/5 — Flavor-wise they were decent, but way too oily for my taste. Mushroom Bao Bun: Tasty, but the portion felt a bit small — just one bao per order, which was a little underwhelming. The servers were kind, humble, and clearly doing their best amidst a packed weekend crowd. Service was fast considering how busy it was. There’s a wait time if you haven’t reserved a table make sure to reserve one.
Spacious place nice vibes. It is one of those ultra dim moderate music place where it is difficult to read the menu. The food was decent. The general tso chicken was great. The shitake bun was too sweet. Schezuan fried rice grows on you but the initial taste is a bit tangy and flowery. Also got the green beans, they were simple sauted but wouldn’t really pay $18 for it next time.
A funky place with spicy vegetarian/vegan options. As a vegetarian, I’ve been seeking restaurants that adapt normally meat-full dishes into vegetarian options, and this place fit the requirements. I got the calamari which was actually made of mushrooms. They were crispy, and the spices were awesome. Full of cumin and I love cumin. The rice cakes were saucy with hints of ginger. The rice cakes themselves were chewy, and I liked how many vegetables they added. The vegan sausage was also quite tasty. The crispy, almost burnt bits were the best.
One of the better Chinese restaurants in New York, IMO. This one is Szechuan and the flavor profiles are spot on every time I'm here.\n\nThis is not a cheap restaurant for Chinese standards. I woul…
About what I was expecting, I can't believe people subject themselves to this.\n\nSzechuan fried rice was pretty good but outrageously priced ($20 with no protein) and the protein add-on was like t…
July 2023: Stopped by for dinner and ordered the peppercorn brussel sprouts and the Dan Dan noodles. The Dan Dan noodles was too salty 😔. I really wanted to love the dish. Flavor was good, but just overpowered by the salt. Brussel sprouts were tasty. Something had the numbing oil. Couldn't tell if it was the noodles or the brussel sprouts. I had a nice pale ale from Nanjing. Good quenching drink to cut the saltiness of the noodles.
I was excited to embark on a plant-based journey in Spicy Moon but my dining experience left me with mixed feelings, ultimately questioning the hype surrounding this eatery. To kick off our culinary exploration, we started with the Bao buns. Unfortunately, this initial foray set the tone for the rest of the meal. The Bao buns were sweet and the filling was noticeably scant, failing to deliver the flavor punch we anticipated. Moving on to the Veg wontons in chilli oil, the meal took a turn for the better. The wontons were indeed a highlight, with a satisfying texture and a well-balanced infusion of spices. Next came the Dan Dan noodles which were okayish. The dish, though not outright disappointing, lacked the depth and complexity one might associate with authentic Szechuan cuisine. The Mapo Tofu with rice was fine. While the tofu curry was a satisfying dish, the rice accompanying it left much to be desired, feeling undercooked and raw. This unfortunate pairing detracted from what could have been a more enjoyable dish. The saving grace of the evening arrived in the form of the Szechuan fried rice. With an impressive spice level and a tongue-numbing effect, this dish managed to salvage some of the lost charm. The interplay of flavors in the fried rice hinted at the potential Spicy Moon possesses but, unfortunately, failed to elevate the overall dining experience. Despite sampling what the menu deemed as the most liked dishes, the cumulative experience did not justify the hype surrounding Spicy Moon. In a city as diverse as New York, where exceptional Asian cuisine abounds, it's challenging to recommend Spicy Moon as a must-try destination. One positive aspect worth noting is the prompt service.
Really cool that there’s a complete vegan menu of (American) Chinese food at @spicymoonnyc ! Personal favorites this time were the string beans and the salt & pepper stir fry. The food was good but the environment not that enjoyable. It was very cold indoors and even our food cooled down way too fast. There were also huge crowds waiting and standing way too close to people who are trying to eat.
I really appreciate that it's vegan food but I think the place is banking heavily on taking up the vegan Szechuan Chinese niche and their 'hot pink edgy kawaii' brand more than quality food and service. Kudos to their marketing team though, they do sell the brand well because I heard a lot about this place from people, vegan influencers, bloggers etc. Maybe it just didn't live up to my expectations. We got two lunch specials. The food was not bad. The dan dan noodles and tofu were alright, the dumpling filling had no flavor, it was disappointing. I would have appreciated a larger quantity given the prices. There was only one person serving on the afternoon we were there but he was trying his best (not sure why they didn't have more staff on the weekend when almost all the tables were occupied). We found ourselves waiting quite a while to order, waiting to be served, waiting for the check. I wouldn't visit again but I wish them the best.
I had read good things about this place and I was a little disappointed. I dined alone and was sat at the bar. Staff were friendly and helpful, but menu is a bit overwhelming. I ordered the mushroom Bao bun, steamed dumplings and an off menu rice noodle vegetable dish (as when I asked if the Dan Dan noodles had veggies the answer was no). The dumplings had a very thick and dry casing. Didn’t really have too much flavor. The Bao bun was good, but the sauce was just at the top and the bun was a bit bland once you bit off the sauce and mushroom. The rice noodles didn’t really have a sauce or flavor (although true serving size was big). I wanted it like it more but I’ve seen vegan food done better so was a bit disappointed. Spent $60 including tip and Tax with a glass of Prosecco. The decor and vibe is fun though!
Overall: 3/5 Food: 3/5 - We came here on a saturday afternoon for lunch and were able to be seated right away. We got the mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and brussel sprouts and we both agreed that the brussel sprouts tasted the best. I thought the dan dan noodles tasted a bit off and while the mapo tofu was good, it was a bit too oily and the taste of the spices were too overpowering that the overall flavor profile was not the best. The mapo tofu(already costing over $20) also does not come with the rice and you have to pay an extra charge to get rice when it is standard to get rice with mapo tofu at literally every other restaurant so that was offputting. Service: 3/5 - There was essentially no service other than getting our order and getting a water refill at the end of our meal. Because everything is oily and spicy, we would have appreciated more water throughout the meal. All that would not have been too much of an issue if not for the fact that the lowest tip option they offer at the end of the meal from the ipad is 20% when there was basically no service. Value: 2/5 - The total ended up being around $80. I don't think the quality, quantity and service really warrant this price tag and would rather walk to chinatown to get an authentic chinese meal for a better price. Overall, everything was just mediocre and would not warrant a return visit.
This restaurant is a Szechuan vegan restaurant. I went into this restaurant with high expectations, but I was let down overall. This restaurant is mediocre at best. So when we first went into the restaurant, it was packed to the brim, and the only available seats were outdoors. No problem. We ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, Vegetable Chili Oil Wontons, and the Dry Pepper Style mixed vegetable+tofu. I thought the prices were a bit expensive compared to what I usually ordered for the same items in lower Manhattan. The Dan Dan Noodles were good, but I would have liked a bit more flavor within the noodles. Also, my accompaniment and I were highly disappointed with the Vegetable Chili Oil wontons, it did not have much filling inside, my favorite part of that dish was the chili oil honestly, I used the chili oil in that dish to mix in with the Dan Dan noodles to add more flavor :) I think I enjoyed the Dry pepper tofu/veggie dish the most. The fried tofu definitely feels like a crispy chicken when you first bite into it, but just with a hollow inside. I am not vegan at all, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the food fairly. I have a fair spice tolerance, and the food was not spicy at all in my opinion, so don't worry about it if you can't handle spice that well!
Nothing special about this place. The food was bland and expensive. Not sure why people raved about the noodles.

Was so looking forward to Spicy moon, as I’d heard a lot about it! But we were disappointed :( To start with the rice was UNDERCOOKED!! The vegetable wontons lacked flavor, and were dipped in chilli oil which made it super oily. The mapo tofu was spicy and that’s the primary flavor I got. Even the Dan Dan noodles, the most popular dish didn’t taste good either. As for the bao, we just got one piece, which had very less filling. Overall, we were disappointed because we spent so much money and wasted most of the food. My friends told me later that the west village location is not good, and that I should try the one in East village. But I have a lot of inertia after this experience
Had to sit in the cold because they didnt have space inside even though we had a reservation. Food was Really spicy, I only was able to eat the wonton soup, scallion pancakes, and dumplings which were all good. Drinks were delicious except for some had so much garnish and we barely were able to have the actual drink because so many seeds of fruits in the inside of the glass Not sure i would come again to this location
I had high expectations from the place but it was a let down. I was excited about a vegan Asian restaurant but the food wasn’t great for the price they asked. The veg spring rolls only had 2 pieces. The chopped cheese rolls were okay. The wonton soup was too salty and not balanced. The moon bowl tasted weird, it was a lot of raw veggies without any broth like I was expecting it to have. The Schezwan rice was nice and spicy but very very oily. All the food came together in one go, and the table was tiny for 3 people to keep their plates and the food. General Asian places are much better, even if they have just 2-3 vegetarian options.
Our expectations were high and honestly we didn’t enjoy the food much due to the crazy spice levels. The szechuan rice was so ridiculously spicy 🥵 I couldn’t even taste any other flavour. The spice in that thing was insane. I ate it bc I didn’t want to waste it but boy was I dyin. The dan dan noodles were alright but the flavour wasn’t fully there either - something was missing with those too. We had to mix the rice and noodles to bring the spice level down. Honestly my bad for not inquiring about it, also the waiter didn’t mention anything about spice levels at all but I now understand with the name of the restaurant being literally spicy LOL Otherwise, the ambience was great and the staff were really really nice. Appreciate the vegan activism in the resto. Maybe we chose the wrong dishes.. 🤔 I was so sad because I really wanted to enjoy this meal. We had minimal days and we picked and chose the vegan restaurants to visit in the city, and when it’s not up to par, it’s a little disappointing.
Ok so I went to this place because of the 4.5 rating 🤷🏽♀️ it looks pretty cute and is in good area. But the food was serious let down. I tried the dan dan noodles with “vegan beef” which the server recommended,it smelled weird too. I think the high ratings are from people who are vegan and dont eat regular noodles. I tried adding the chili oil which diner on other table recommended after he probably saw my disappointed face. You can find way better noodles at any regular place in china town 🤷🏽♀️ not worth the $25
I used to frequent this location back in 2022 and the food was pretty good then, but since then the portion sizes have shrunk to half of what they used to be, the flavors are pretty bland and weirdly sweet (as a Sichuanese vegan person I think I can judge this), and the prices are ridiculous (you can get the same thing you get here for $30 for better quality in Chinatown for at most $8). For a tiny bowl of noodles and wonton soup, that should be pretty cheap. We also got a drink and it was way too sugary and unappetizing. Finally, maybe this is just personal preference but the atmosphere itself had kind of consumerist/pop culture-y/gentrification vibes and obviously directed towards clueless people who don’t know where to find better Chinese food. I still appreciate this place & chain as a vegan but I believe I have to be harsh in order for it to improve. Until then I probably won’t be going back…
I had a really disappointing experience at Spicy Moon. The place was dim to the point of being uncomfortable almost no lighting, which already set a bad tone. But the worst part was the food. Everything tasted stale and reheated, like it had been sitting around too long. Within hours, I felt bloated and my stomach hurt badly. Definitely not what I expected from a spot that’s supposed to be popular. I wouldn’t recommend eating here at all.
Racially profiled on Halloween. I am so deeply disappointed in the experience on Halloween that it pains me to have to write this review. I've been patronizing Spicy Moon for years, and I was disgusted about how I was treated last night. My significant other and I were downtown for a show at Blue Note and wanted to get something to eat before the show. I RAVED about this place and told him to look at the menu while I headed to the bathroom. He must've not heard me too well because the music was blasting, and the front was chaotic. There was a Latino man guarding the door around 9:15 PM (slender, low cut). As I walked to the bathroom, I see him running behind me as if I stole something. Sidenote, I am a 30-something-year-old Black woman who simply decided to use the restroom, because, you know...I've patronized this establishment numerous times. The man decides that I am an easy target to scold and yell at. He approaches me with a very nasty attitude and yells, "YOU CAN'T USE THE RESTROOM IF YOU'RE NOT EATING DINNER." I reply, "He's looking at the menu." He hesitates and assumes that I'm lying, because once I leave the restroom, my significant other tells me that he actually asked him if he was with me, to confirm whether or not I was lying. Once I realized what was happening, we left and I knew the man felt very low because he couldn't even make eye contact with me. Spicy Moon, do all of us a favor and train your staff to appropriately interact with customers without racially profiling them. The place was crowded for Halloween, and the only person he felt the need to harass out of all the people there, was a Black woman. I will never come back again. The food has gone downhill, and yet, I've still patronized. But the experience I had last night will forever be etched in my mind, and I refuse to go to a restaurant that treats me like a criminal for using the restroom before making a reservation.
If you respect your money and know how to make your own food I would skip on this. Worst overpriced ramen I have ever ate. Got me good with left over beef too for 4$ I couldn’t even find a single nice piece. I can buy myself organic ground beef pack for 6$ that can feed me for 3 days.
