Their breakfast is amazing! The portions are HUGE and the prices are definitely worth it. There were 14 people in our party so the employees seated us outside. The outdoor seating was an enclosed shelter like deal. My only concern was that we were sitting in the street.

Really tasty. Get the BBC omelette. It’s the broccoli bacon cheddar omelette- get your head out of the gutter! 🍳 ☕️

The interior design complements the food served. From my first meal, the people at The Comfort Diner greet me personally and remain responsive. The dishes deliver expected flavors. They nail every aspect from cuisine to surroundings. This spot delivers five-star experiences consistently.

Loved it. I wish we had found it before our last day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They noticed when we were seated we weren't comfortable so they moved us to a different table. Food was amazing and tasty.

What an amazing Diner, I think I would use the word authentic... it’s not trying to be a Diner but is a diner... the food was amazing... had the lumberjack and the best pancakes I’ve ever had ! And the a good price ! The service was great, very friendly... I would recommend this place if your looking for a real diner and not a TV themed diner !

So let me tell you. Family and I ate breakfast here the whole time we were in NY. We stayed right across the st. If you get a chance, try it. You will not be disappointed. Their breakfast sausage and waffles are the best. I wanted to try everything on the menu but didn't have enough time to do so while visiting. Maybe next time. Have fun. And staff are all amazing!

Amazing chicken wings (real spicy) and the hamburger was incredible! That meat was one of the best I have tried!!! Recommend!!! Also the place amazing vintage, the price is fair!

The food and service here kept us coming back every morning during our trip to New York. The manager Dahalia runs a tight ship and you can feel that everyone loved working there. Absolutely get the lemon ricotta pancakes. I would have taken a picture, but each time there were in my belly before I got a chance to.

This spot maintains quality standards rigorously. The employees are as attractive as they are helpful. The Comfort Diner succeeds completely. The atmosphere complements the quality of the dishes. I plan another visit shortly.

I seldom if ever give 5 stars to a restaurant. This place is a real treat for anyone wanting to experience the true American breakfast/lunch/diner. We had burgers (the sliders for the kids), the “all year round Thanksgiving meal” and the meatloaf and my oh my, they didn’t lie when stating this would be better than your mother’s. It indeed was, and much more! The staff was real nice too as we discussed how immigration has built and is still shaping America. The whole family (from 1 to 11) loved it. My favorite in NYC for sure (so far).

"This breakfast burrito is delicious but it is filling" - Ron Burgundy. I had extra sausage in mine, tight packing and very tasty. My wife says the eggs in her breakfast are up there with the best shes ever had. Would recommend.

It was good to be back , I built this place some 25years ago , it’s still holding up well food and staff were great and the dinner was full for brunch, from the tiled floors to the extruded polished stainless steel cove moldings the place looked good. Happy to see it’s still a thriving business - despite being buried under scaffold on the outside.

Great brunch, very cold weather, had the chicken soup to warm my stomach. Many people are waiting for a table, this is a restaurant that many people like, will come again next time.

I have been a fan of Comfort Diner since 2008. They had me at their 1940's style diner front and cozy old timey feel. The location doesn't hurt being so close to Grand Central in days of work commuting. This is not an area of Manhattan for parking. Maybe nights are different. Do try the Lemon Ricotta blueberry pancakes. Usually only available on weekends. They are thin and heaven on a plate. There used to be a pistachio crusted catfish with collard greens and sweet potato mash that was one of my favorite entrees but, it's not on menu any longer. ☹ It was divine though. Weekends are packed here but service is always excellent and fast. Good going Comfort for staying around this long!!!

Great little place. Easy to get to. Service was excellent. The food was great. Prices are reasonable. Vaccination card and ID needed for dine-in service. I had the BBC omelette. The iced tea was also very fresh.

Delicious! We ordered the lumberjack subbed out the pancakes for waffle + added fruit, and a side of grits. Our service was great, awesome atmosphere and the food hit the perfect spot for some good old fashioned home cooked feelings. You won’t be disappointed!

Come ready to eat. I had a great breakfast at the Comfort Diner this morning. I appreciate the staff's kindness. My coffee was good, fresh and hot. They provided bottled water. I ordered the flannel hash (side) because it had sweet potato and beets and bacon. There was a misunderstanding, and I got the order with corned beef. But, the corned beef was absolutely delicious. It turned out to be a pleasant issue, in my favor 👍🏾. My husband ordered the All American with turkey bacon. He ate it all. His eggs were perfectly cooked. It was a nice morning and a good way to start the day. Good prices. Good service. Lastly, I sat at the counter. The gentleman working the grill had an impressive rhythm with getting food out. It made me anticipate my food even more. I think I saw him prepare like 100 pancakes. It was impressive.

One of the highlights to our trip to NYC. We came here the day we arrived for dinner and were immediately hooked. Solomon and the entire staff were so incredibly nice, polite, friendly and did a wonderful job of making us feel welcomed. Our stay was 6 days and we came here 4 of those days. It tasted truly homemade and each time hit the spot perfectly. This place lives up to its name and will absolutely be my first stop next time I visit!!

We always enjoy our food when we come to The Comfort Diner for breakfast. They are consistent and the staff is very friendly. The ‘home fires’ are a blend of sweet potatoes and white potatoes. The are tasty! We always request maple syrup when get breakfast from anywhere we go… surprisingly they had some!! There is outdoor seating, if you desire to sit outside. Aside from the craziness of Ny streets, you should be able to enjoy your food.

Perfect location for breakfast - came to this location. Two days in a row during my stay in NYC - best Belgian waffles; all foods are fresh and made to order; if a large party do show up together to be seated right away! Very affordable —worth a nice walk if staying in midtown to the location as well.

The food portions were larger than expected. The service was fast and friendly. My omelette could have used a little more salt imo, but everything was very good overall.

My absolute favorite breakfast and lunch location in midtown New York. The menu is fully loaded with delicious classic recipies-omelettes, waffles, pancakes, bacon/ham/sausage treats, burritos, lox & egg dishes, granola & fruit, as well as lunch favorites-burgers, soups, salads, sandwiches, as well as assorted dinner favorites. The sataff treats you like family. FIVE STARS!!

Had breakfast here on a weekday morning. Loved the atmosphere - it felt like we'd stepped back in time. Family run, with friendly staff and good coffee. My only criticism was the maple syrup which they made a point of saying was 'premium amber' but it was quite unusual and very gloopy. Aside from that, the food was hot and tasty and we'd return there again.

Highly recommended for an authentic classic New York diner experience. The country breakfast—with gravy and grits—was excellent, and the lemon ricotta pancakes were delicious and had a unique soft texture that melted in your mouth. The owner was incredibly friendly and took the time to chat with us, which made the experience even better. Only wish they were open later so I could go more often.

Came here while on a visit to NYC with my 3 kids looking for some great breakfast food. We were immediately greeted by the owner who is warm, friendly, and downright delightful. We had waffles, the lemon ricotta pancakes (amazing) and a grilled cheese. The food was exceptional, the coffee was fresh and hot, and the atmosphere was warm with an old fashioned vibe. Just the most charming little diner and I’m so happy with stumbled across it.

This place lives up to its name, I came here for a meal and break from the Manhattan crowds and was generally satisfied by their food and atmosphere. I had the country breakfast (eggs, 2 biscuits and gravy, and grits) which I enjoyed but definitely could've used more gravy on the biscuits. As mentioned, the atmosphere was nice, kind of retro, but expect to flag down the wait staff yourself sometimes.

Megan Real
Megan Real

We went because of the coupon from Club Wyndham across the street and were not disappointed. The place is huge by diner standards, so there was no wait, and service was efficient, particularly considering the surprisingly large menu. Food was great - it’s diner food, so you either like it or you don’t. There was a table of folks who seemed like they’d wandered in from another dimension who essentially wanted custom recipes and kept sending things back - this ain’t that kind of place. If you want generous portions of diner classics in a setting that hasn’t changed since the 70’s, this is for you. If you want a $50 salad, go elsewhere.

Andy Watts
Andy Watts

Got exactly what I was after. To me the diner looks like a throwback to America of the 1970s and the food was tasty and unhealthy. Perfect! I would definitely come back if I’m in the area for another Philly cheesesteak and fries.

This place feels straight out of a movie, the interior is totally iconic. The staff couldn’t be friendlier, and the food and coffee were great. If you’re looking for the ultimate all-American breakfast experience, this is the place. Bonus points for the background music, it nails the vibe. 🫠🫠

We were caught in the middle of a heavy rainstorm, and was craving for breakfast for brunch. Found this little place right near our hotel that serves bisquits and gravy, and thought, hey, let's give it a go since we have never tasted bisquits prepared on the east side of the country. First off, we waited at the entrance to see if we were supposed to wait to be seated. There was no sign, the servers walked around us, saw us, but ignored us like we weren't there, so, we thought maybe we should seat ourselves as it was our first time in NYC. We found a booth and sat down. After a long wait, we were told to move to a table seat right near the door, without letting us know what was going on, nor checking if we had wanted a booth or a table. Hubby was pissed, so we headed out. The server was apologetic, we knew it was not the server's fault. There were available booths and the restaurant was not crowded at the time we were there. So, we were given a booth inside the restaurant, and we were good. Apart from all that, I must say the food was pretty awesome. Bisquits were sweet, unlike the savoury kind we have back home; first time having grits with biscuits and gravy, so it was something new. Overall, our day was not completely ruined, and that was really something.

C
Chris Stephens

The food was tasty but they didn't have my first two choices. Having a strict diet I wanted a veggie option and had to settle for pasta. It was good pasta though lol. The place was really cool and had a great atmosphere. We enjoyed our meal. I also had to buy the 12 dollar comfort diner coffee mug.

j
julian (julius)

Great food, fries were delicious and crispy Philly cheese steak was hot and hit all the right spots. Service was friendly and quick. However, for better or for worse this diner truly keep it 80s decor. Needs a remolding, some seats were broken.

D
Donna Ebelhar

The food here was excellent. Probably better service with a small group or solo. We were a group of 17. We got all orders, but they were very staggered and the servers did not know who got what food. Would eat here again.

H
Howard

Nicely styled American Diner, close to Grand Central but not on a crowded street. The staff were super friendly and efficient, the menu was the usual broad diner options, and the food itself was generous and tasty. The one downside is the place is very much split between the front and back. While they're both a similar look, the back is near the kitchen and therefore much hotter, but also (maybe just our bad luck) more dimly lit. The front seemed airier and lighter as well as a more comfortable temperature.

H
Harrison C. Davies

This place has some true diner elements including being about as thin as an actual train car, but don’t let that stop you from getting a true NYC diner experience. The meal value was not bad at all. Some improvements could lie within having a place for guests to seat while they wait for the rest of their party to arrive since they will not seat incomplete parties despite the fact that they easily could when we were there. Also they do not let you get a to go cup of a bottomless beverage which was a huge turn off and quite frankly made no sense what so ever.

The fresh, best ricotta and lemon pancakes I've ever had !! A very pleasant surprise 4me. 😋 But A bit expensive for 3 pieces. I complain for cutlery that did not look clean and the carpet was definitely not vacuumed for a long time .. Four stars for the toilet which scares away with its "smell". Anyway higly recomended pancakes!!

Exactly what we wanted in a diner to complete our NYC vacation experience. Large portions. Friendly staff. Super friendly customers. I had the country breakfast. One thing I noticed compared to Canada. All the meals, meat was extra. Not a big deal. Just interesting. Our kids had pancakes and were happy as can be.

Super friendly staff. The lady which served us breakfast was heartwarming. A typical US diner. Somettimes loud but great. Endless coffee. Good food. A place like you search for when you think on the 80s. Back to the Future. Hey folks - a must see and taste in NY

Food wasn’t great. The place felt a bit dirty and busy. Boxes out in the seating area. The machines at the counter very noisy. It’s fine for a bit of food but not the best place around.

D
Dariusz Jemielniak (Pundit)

A decent diner with what you'd expect. I had Eggs Benedict, which was fine, but not great. The coffee was good and a refill came when needed. What is there to add? :) It could be cheaper, too - 20+ for breakfast is not exactly affordable, but it is Manhattan and there is inflation, so there is that.

M
Michael Regier

Update 23 Feb 2026: second visit and had the Red Flannel Hash. It was just as good, perhaps even more enjoyable than the for time. Definitely a diner to visit. Solid diner experience. I will definitely visit again. Friendly and attentive service - the right level of attentiveness :). The coffee hits that diner coffee sweet spot, with the perfect shaped mug to match. The red flannel hash is a surprising twist on the theme. Executed in perfect diner style. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, and beets were cooked to the right consistency, an excellent dish given the difference in cooking times for these. The pork was tender and flaked beautifully. A total comfort breakfast indulgence.

M
Mark Paquin

Food was great, time to get food, not so much but they were very busy. I had Chili Mac and my wife had Chicken Noodle Soup and salad (which took a while to get, while I had mine). Wife said it was the best food of our 4 day trip, so that's a plus. Old school diner vibe. Place was packed.

Our first morning waking up in NYC we wanted to try an authentic, traditional diner. We had been recommended to The Comfort Diner from a friend back home (we’re from the UK). It’s exactly what I expected, old-school decor, polite, friendly and welcoming service. Being breakfast time the atmosphere was relatively quiet - it was super early as we were battling with jet-lag. The food arrived quickly, portions were generous (too generous for me really - not used to the sheer size of portions Stateside), lots of choices on the menu - omelettes, pancakes, waffles etc etc. For me I felt there were no real “healthier” options - but that’s just me and my fussy food choices - and if you want a traditional diner experience then I would highly recommend you pay this place a visit.

A lovely little classic American diner just off Grand Central Station. The service was excellent, and the food was as good as you would expect. The steak and eggs were very tasty, as was the huge breakfast burrito. Would definitely stop off here again. Great value for money.

Typical diner vibe in the middle of Manhattan. Was packed when I went on the weekend. Went back on weekday and it was better with no wait, but still full. Food was good. Had the breakfast burrito one day and chicken soup and pancakes the other day. Burrito was excellent, soup was decent, pancakes were good. Coffee was typical diner coffee, nothing too good, but not bad.

S
Sophia Chambers

This restaurant was small and not very clean service was slow didn't check if we needed anything the food was okay not someplace I would eat at again prices were way to high.

S
Sergei Stark

It's a big mystery for me why Americans and tourists are happy with the state of places like this. It's very weary and desperately needs some renovation or basic maintenance. I saw like 5 male staff members, and instead of, let's say, removing painter tape from the walls placed there for no appearant reason (covering rust may be), they were just talking to each other in Arabic. I firmly believe that if you open or buy a place representing American culture, you should treat it with great respect. Staff were friendly, prices are ok too. I got a check with no service fee.

L

I visited The Comfort Diner for breakfast, drawn by its classic diner style. I ordered The Leo, and the food itself was decent, but it cooled off quickly so don't hang around. The diner's atmosphere is a little let down by the lack of natural light. It feels quite enclosed, and it's not possible to have a view outside while dining. The biggest issue was the service regarding the coffee. After asking for a top-up, I waited a significant time - long enough that I had finished my food. When I followed up on the request, I was informed that the staff were still waiting for a fresh batch to be ready. It's definitely a faux pas for a diner to run out of coffee during the morning (especially as the place wasn't busy). Even once the fresh coffee was made, there was no urgency to serve it. Overall, I wasn't particularly impressed with the experience. There are plenty of other great options available in the area.

Not sure how this place has over a 4 star review but I guess maybe they had an off day when I was there. My eggs and home fries were ice cold and trying to get a refill on my coffee was almost impossible. Place was a bit dirty as well which I wouldn't mind if the food was good. I won't be going back

J
John Maniscalco

My wife and I lived in NYC for 8 years. We could not believe the horrible service recently afforded us at the Comfort Diner! We sat down…ordered eggs…and waited and waited until we just got up and walked out. And that was after talking to the staff! Get it together Comfort Diner, or change your name, because there was not “comfort” expressed to us today. John M

L

Not a fan lowkey sketchy and smelly made me want to throw up looking at the floor and the smell that came with the building it could’ve been because I was on my period… but then this lady said that her chicken was uncooked and girllll you don’t mess around with that I just can’t do it. #neveragain 😬😐

G

Gratuity being included definitely makes the the waiters not work as hard. Waitress was rude, food is not bad but I can make the same at home for cheaper. Broken lights and A/C is only partially working. Mediocre at best.

L
Luke Withers

Do not come here. Not the type of person to leave a review but it was terrible in all facets. Cold food, long wait times. BE VERY CAREFUL OF AN 18% service charge (YOU CAN ASK FOR THIS TO BE REMOVED). On top of that they press you to buy bottled water for 50 cents, what kind of restaurant doesn’t offer tap water? Way better diners in town. Waste of time and money.

R
Ravindra Vaikunthanathan

The service in this place is excellent and friendly. Unfortunately the food is terrible and pricey. Waffle was $13 and pancakes was $14. The food taste was just okay. Even IHOP is better. If the plates has some sort of garnishing (fruits or something) it may look worth it.

A
Avi Shapiro

Good place but they have a service charge (no disclosure beforehand) and also ask for a 20% tip. Pretty scummy!

K
Kevin Dolan

I usually don’t give negative reviews, but I’ve been to this place twice and both times I was underwhelmed. During the latest visit, our order wasn’t placed on the first try and it took 20 minutes until the problem was realized. The potatoes were a little soggy both times too because I learned they’re not always made to order. You’re better off waiting the extra couple of minutes for Joe’s Coffee Shop on 44th St and 2nd

L
Lacey Bennett

It's a quaint diner with a nostalgic feeling. Don't eat here if you want any kind of service though. With 2 other tables in the building, it took 10 minutes for a greet, another 10 minutes for the hot chocolate and we had to ask 3 times for the water we initially ordered. You actually have to ask for everything at this place, like ketchup for fries. After our plates were cleared, we waited nearly 15 minutes for a check and finally had to ask....to which we had to ask again. Besides terrible service, the food is incredibly bland. We tried the homemade mozzarella wedges with marinara. The cheese wasn't fully melted and it was basic bread crumbs for a coating. The marina was watered down tomato sauce. The chicken noodle soup and large tender pieces of chicken but there was no seasoning. It was basic chicken broth with some thin noodles, carrots and celery. Absolutely no flavor. The burger sliders also lacked. This place doesnt seem to believe in using salt or pepper, let alone anything kind of seasoning. These sliders were cooked decently but had no taste.

I really wanted to like this diner - it’s cozy and right on my way to work. But my one (and only) experience was underwhelming. We ordered simple breakfast food, but waited about 45 minutes, while everyone around us who arrived later got their food. The owner was walking around to each table but somehow neglected ours. The food was good, but it wasn’t worth the poor service and wait. Unfortunately I’ll be looking for another regular diner near work.

i went with my friend for breakfast here right after new years and it did not exceed our expectations at all. we were interested in trying this place and when we walking in the restaurant does have a comforting vibe but also a bit run down. the food was alright. i got a swiss cheese omelette with peppers and onions and my friend got scrambled eggs with turkey bacon and toast. there was a frozen aftertaste with my potatoes and apparently the water machine broken but i saw multiple tables getting glasses of water while we were CHARGED $.50 for bottled water. i mean seriously??? that’s so unheard of and awful. it’s not that 50 cents is bad but if you claim your water machine isn’t working please do not charge us for water. this is a sit down restaurant not mcdonald’s. also we asked for the check TWICE and they never ever checked to see how we were doing. and they didn’t take our plates away after we ate. would not recommend this place to anyone. no.

We are not from the USA so left very confused by the combination of both a service charge AND a request for tip. That would result in a minimum of 36% on the cost of the meal. Was this honestly expected? It left quite a sour taste for us. Won’t be back due to this underhand, shady behaviour.

I so badly wanted to like this place… unfortunately it’s cold and dirty. Stuff hanging from walls is full of dust. The French toast was raw and uncooked in the middle. Service was not attentive even without many people inside. Really bummed.

Teeny tiny spot. This place is for thin, and skinny people. Barely any room. Please season the food. Salt is the bare minimum. You can season your vegetables!! It’s literally a thing! The bell peppers were chunky, hard and made my omelette worse than what it already was. My potatoes were cold and flavorless as well. Waitress took way too long to bring us the check. We were visibly done for 20 minutes and she kept walking past us giving people who came in after us their checks. She was not the friendliest either. I get it, New Yorkers/ northerners are rude but it’s time to flip that narrative in 2025. The rude fatigue. AND NORTHERNERS, PLEASE SEASON YOUR FOOD!! WE ARE NOT PILGRIMS!! I should not have to put salt and pepper on my food after it’s cooked. 🤮

We got the Lemmon ricotta pancakes and the huevos rancheros. Both were pretty mediocre. The pancakes especially tasted undercooked and kinda gross. Servers also didn’t provide syrup or water until they were asked and then automatically included a 18% tip. Don’t recommend this place at all.

Notably poor experience. Dingy, grimy interior that upon closer inspection was unsanitary. We were told they had no tap water and so we had to buy bottled water. Very slow and neglectful service - our waitress even double backed to tell us she forgot what we ordered. Once the food finally came we had little appetite, and what was eaten was bland and greasy. Honestly just left feeling gross and unsettled. Diners in the area I’d recommend instead are Townhouse or Gemini.

This could have been a great spot, but the restaurant's basic service falls short. Nothing frustrates customers more than staff reusing a dirty, bleach-soaked mop, especially when they're cleaning three hours before closing. Can anyone explain? After spending $30 and leaving without eating, I ended up with a mouthful of bleach and will never return. When I told the owner, he said, 'I'll tell them to use less bleach.' The real problem isn't the amount of bleach but that cleaning happens while guests are still eating, and staff seem unapologetic about it. No thanks.

BAFFLED by any good reviews left for this place. Can’t rate the food - we never got any. The waiter (possibly owner too?) hurried through taking our order & we then sat for 40 minutes waiting while other tables got their food. Only one of our two drinks was brought out - no straw, it was ever brought & neither was the other drink. No apologies were given for having to wait for anything at any point, but we sat watching other tables get checked on. Finally we had enough of waiting & went to tell the waiter we were leaving. He got RUDE & DEFENSIVE saying “well what am I supposed to do” - SERIOUSLY?! You’re supposed to SERVE YOUR TABLES! When mentioned the second drink was never brought, he had an excuse he had to change the fountain - that SHOULD have been addressed by simply stopping by the table and mentioning it will take a minute & asking if we would like something else instead. But that never happened. The waiter then got nasty and asked if we were canceling our order (mind you - I don’t believe he ever even put the order in, I think he forgot and was embarrassed so got defensive) - when we said yes, we were leaving - he grabbed the ONE drink off the table and tried to make US look like the ones in the wrong by saying “I guess you’re not going to pay for your drink” in front of the full diner. NO I AM NOT PAYING FOR IT, it was not touched, I was never brought a straw and YOU ARE IN THE WRONG HERE. His reaction should have been APOLOGETIC. I fully understand things happen, mistakes happen, etc but it’s all in how it’s handled & these people are flat out RUDE. Don’t waste your time here unless you like subpar service. DO BETTER - people have options, especially in NYC…act like you care about your customers who CHOSE YOU.

I visited Comfort Diner years when I'm was last in the city and remembered really enjoying it, which is why I decided to return. Unfortunately, this visit was a big letdown. The breakfast I ordered was bland and completely lacking in flavor. What really ruined the experience, though, was the weird atmosphere inside. While I was eating, the servers were openly arguing with a man I assume was the manager or owner. The discussion became heated and focused on staff requesting time off during the middle of their shift to run errands. These arguments took place loudly around customers, with no regard for people trying to enjoy their meal. I got really uncomfortable! At one point, my server came over to check on me while wearing ear pods and actively talking on the phone. The interaction felt rushed and insincere, as if he was just ticking a box rather than actually checking in, and was clearly more focused on continuing his call than on providing service. Being served while listening to uncomfortable workplace conflicts and dealing with distracted service made the experience very unpleasant. Sadly, this visit did not live up to my previous experience, and I left feeling disappointed. The owner or manager clearly doesn't care anymore and it shows!

The food was not good. I'm not sure why the high ratings here. The omelette was wet and runny. It had a mushy texture to it and the taste was bland. We also got the banana French toast. That, too, seemed mushy. The taste on that was okay, at best. Quite disappointed to be honest. Service was fine. No complaints there. The atmosphere was a bit dirty and outdated, but that was expected based on other comments.

The food is not fresh and the service is nothing special. This place is extremely dingy and unsanitary. The worst part about it, towards the end of the meal, a cockroach casually strolled across the table. It’s the middle of the day - not a good sign. I don’t like leaving reviews like this, but it is what it is. I won’t be back.
