Opinions de Kiln Newcastle Upon Tyne
We recently went back to kiln for the second time and it was utterly fantastic. Really delicious and creative food and a great wine list. Good value and great service. One of the best restaurants in Newcastle!
If you like high quality food and a place with a vibe, come here to find your tribe. Not even sure how may I start this place to describe, but before I do, like, comment, follow, subscribe. Plates are designed for sharing you will see, so instead of ordering for me, go for we. Variety for meat lovers, plant eaters and diet cheaters. For the flavour curious, the beer drinkers and for the plate repeaters. Staff and service is outstanding, I guess it becomes even part of the restaurant branding, make sure to make a reservation so they don’t leave you standing, and be ready to claim that this place has been your finding.
This is a return visit back to the Kiln and the first time this year, previously it’s always been during the day, this is the first time in the evening and the atmosphere was just as chilled, cosy and lovely, we ended up ordering 2/3 of the menu to try as much as we could and it was amazing, the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired menu was delicious!
I tried Kiln as it was the only place I could find open for breakfast in New Year’s Day and couldn’t have been more impressed! A latte with the guest roast was one of the best coffee’s I’ve ever had, followed by the most delicious steak and eggs - everything cooked perfectly and the most amazing flavours. Fantastic service from the staff too, this is a real gem in Newcastle!
Lovely brunch this morning as a large group. Staff were attentive. Yes there was a mix up over an order but that was not the staffs fault at all. Overall the staff were attentive and welcoming. Judging our groups arrival times and ensuring everyone was see too. My steak was delicious and others in the group that ordered also agreed. Will definitely return to sample more of the menu and try some of the scrummy looking cakes.
Stopped here for another brilliant breakfast. We'd never had a Pide before, and the softness of the bread with the middle eastern herbs was just so tasty. We also had the steak and eggs, because why not? Well cooked, with great accompanying sauces. Chilled out tunes wafted across the venue, which was warm and toasty.
Great place! Been twice for a mix of dinner vegetarian sharing plates. - The ciabatta is great 🍞 - The Muhammara (red pepper, walnut dip) is delicious 🌶️ - The side salad was great and freshly cut to order 🥒 🍅 🧅 - potatoes were amazing - the herby green topping! 🥔 🌿 - best thing on the menu is the chargrilled leek 🤤 Thank you Alex, Richard and team. Really beautiful welcoming people 🙏🏽☺️
Really tasty winter brunch in warm cosy restaurant. The service here is always exceptional and the quality of food is very high. The butterbean with poached eggs was one of the best flavour combinations we have had. Have also tried the steak and eggs recently and was really impressed with the flavours and ingredients. This is one of our favourite places to eat. Highly recommended.
Fantastic meal at Kiln. As quite the foodie I struggle to find great places, with good food and service in Newcastle. My first time down the Ouseburn and Kiln was 10/10. The place is cosy, buzzing atmosphere also loved the cosy fire outside. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The menu isn’t huge but plenty to choose from, food was super tasty. We had the hummus, green labneh, chicken skewers, cucumber salad with tomato, pita and a sea bass. Very good, full of flavour. Would recommended to anyone only thing missing is a decent pudding!
Kiln is hands down one of the best restaurant experiences I’ve ever had! While it’s a bit outside Newcastle’s city center, it’s absolutely worth the stroll. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and even though it was packed midweek, we managed to snag a seat at the bar without a reservation. Sitting at the bar turned out to be perfect—it made it easy to keep the incredible food coming, and we certainly indulged! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor, absolutely mouthwatering. I especially loved all the vegetarian options—there was such a great variety, and each one was as delicious as the next. We kept ordering more because everything was so good, and I left feeling completely stuffed in the best way. The staff was wonderfully friendly and attentive without being pushy. At one point, I casually mentioned that I didn’t think there was a dessert menu, but to my delight, there was—and what a dessert it was! The chocolate dessert I had was divine: rich, heavy, and everything a chocolate treat should be. I can’t wait to return someday!
As always kilnouseburn was unbelievable and the staff there, especiallv Alex and Jennv alwavs make us feel so happy, so comfortable and welcome The food is outstanding! The restaurant is incredibly cosy and comfortable to sit in I feel I can qo in casual or dressed up and feel amazing. Special occasion or chilled dinner with friends, this place is perfect for everything. We mostly go for dinner but l've also been for lunch and its perfect at any time of day! My favourite place to eat in Newcastle. I would go every week if I could! 🙏🏻🌠
What a wonderful place to enjoy and share some very tasty food! We were very grateful for Kiln fitting us in late notice. This is the place to be for anyone who loves craft and artisan cooking. Kiln have brought that together hand in hand. Some may be a little confused with the similar to tapas style of dining, for example the chicken thigh skewer doesn't come with chips and salad, but once you put this together with the reasonably priced smaller dishes, you can build a delicious meal for what you'd pay in most places. But the quality and experience are worth so much more. My friends wouldn't stop talking about this afterwards, which is when you know it's special. Maybe one day I'll return and have some fun working that clay! This would make a wonderful gift experience for a loved one, or a celebration for a special occasion. The staff were also lovely. Thanks for having us guys. Extra points if they made all of the dinnerware!
Me and my partner visited Kiln on a Sunday evening after it had been recommended to us by friends. It was busy but still cosy and comfortable, with a really nice interior and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The small meze style Eastern European plates were delicious, with a really enjoyable variety of flavours. We especially loved the muhammara! Big thanks to our waitress Mia for the spot on food recommendations and pleasant service, and to the whole team for their attention to detail. Would definitely come back and recommend to friends!
The best way to describe Kiln is that it is a haven. The ethos and vibe of this venue feels like how you imagine the world to be in an idealistic but unrealistic dream. No pretentiousness, not trying to be anything they aren’t. Just welcoming, open minded and relaxed. The staff are all incredibly friendly, helpful and do everything with a smile on their face. The fact that one of them, with brown curly hair, is the most beautiful woman you will ever see is purely a bonus.
Kiln - one of my favourites in Newcastle. It’s been quite some time since we went but every time we go, we always receive high quality food! For me, the thing that makes Kiln so great is the fresh ingredients and herbs 🌿, it really comes across in their food as every dish is so fragrant. It’s a mezze platter type restaurant with Lebanese/Middle Eastern inspiration so we got a range of most dishes on the menu. The dips and flatbreads to start were so creamy and full of flavour - a really great way to start the meal. The mains had such a variety of spices which complemented their individual meats/fish/veg. Everything was cooked so well and gave me a similar feeling to having lovely home-cooking/dinner party vibes which is definitely a strong compliment! Overall, I’d definitely recommend going to Kiln if you haven’t already and it works best for a larger crowd so you can get a range of dishes to share!
The Kiln is a cozy spot with a charming vibe, perfect for a relaxed coffee break. Their funky coffee cups add a fun touch to the experience, making each visit feel unique. The outdoor seating is beautiful, offering a great atmosphere for enjoying your drink. The friendly staff make you feel welcome, enhancing the overall laid-back feel of the place. Definitely worth a visit!
What a delight of a restaurant! Our first time in Kiln last night and it certainly won’t be the last. What a gorgeous atmosphere and the food was incredible. A joy to have some non alcoholic options that weren’t full of sugar too. We had such a great time we didn’t even take pictures of the food! I’d highly recommend the sweet potato and feta, chicken and the leek dish. Thank you all for a wonderful dining experience!
We had an amazing meal at Kiln at the weekend. The staff were incredibly helpful with my partner's dietary requirements. He's dairy and gluten free, and the chef came and had a chat with him to see what would be best to order. His food came out on a separate plate as well to avoid any contamination. I loved it here and can't wait to visit again.
Went in with our 2 dogs. Seated quickly and order taken. Lovely place. One staff member was uncertain of dogs so kept a wide berth which made us a tad uncomfortable but was manageable. Food came and was devine, once I had got up to get the flatbreads that I was told wasnt included in my meal (they were) Will definitely recommend and can't wait to come back.
Fantastic meal here. Love the Middle Eastern inspired small plates! The little table lamps add a touch of romanticism! Great sized portions! You can have a wonder to the pottery area and see all the work in progress. They use these plates for serving food which gives you some inspiration!! It’s also dog friendly which is a big bonus!!!!
Warm and cosy with the fires on. Appreciated the spread of tables to manage noise but maintain atmosphere. Would recommend!
Just stunning. Go! Go! Go! My favourite brunch spot in Newcastle. Reserve online or walk-in as it’s surprisingly quiet. The design is trendy with a factory like vibe. The dinnerware is cool, with the plates and mugs being made in the kiln next door. The service is great and the food is special. Everything is a treat. The shakshuka was deep and rich and the flat iron steak was tender and meaty. We had the fruit and berries with coconut and vanilla yoghurt on the side👌 Don’t forget to grab some fresh bread and pastries on the way out too!
Lovely coffee, great vibe to the place. We only had coffee and cake so can't rate the food, but what we had was beautiful. .been here a couple of times now and will travel half an hour just for the coffee and the atmosphere. Pottery is beautiful
Cosy spot just a few minutes walk from the Quayside. Delicious Middle Eastern food and pastries/cakes with friendly service. Shakashuka options really delicious especially for weekend brunch.
Best brunch I’ve had in years - in the UK or abroad. Finest ingredients / food is delicious, great setting, customer service is top quality
Food was superb. We ordered hummus, pita, sausages & geffen salad, joofeh and kofta. Everything was good and flavourful. The vibe of the place was really chill and relaxing.
New menu - huge portions- great value. Lovely glass of cold water with lemon on sitting down followed by the quick follow up with our drinks order. When the food arrived it was fresh and delicious. If you want some bespoke handmade pottery - The pottery is really fairly priced for the quality of the work. The staff were friendly and helpful in finding us a seat (it was so busy). NB I know there have been some mixed reviews and our own experience was great - I can confirm there did not seem to be a consistent service as the people who sat beside us did not get a glass of water, the chap took their drinks order and it took the woman to ask them again before they got anything - she had to apologise for the delay. This is purely a training /organisation issue which I am sure they will iron out. Don’t let this put you off!
Had a fab experience here first time visit and very pleasantly surprised. Service was very welcoming and breakfast was very good and different from you usual if you are looking to try something slightly different. I'd say this would be more for the health conscious. Pricing I thought was very good too. Awesome coffee and atmosphere was fab. Also doggy 🐕 friendly too
Really cool place with alternative breakfast menu, I loved the beans with samphire and eggs, so delicious! Great coffee too!
Best restaurant in newcastle. Period. Serving Middle Eastern/Mediterranean style tapas which were SO flavourful and fresh made with high quality ingredients, the food was well presented, the atmosphere was super cozy and comfortable, we got all but 2 dishes on the menu as we wanted a range of dishes to try; most dishes were 10/10 however falafels were dry and over cooked, they served a nice range of cocktails - although I didn’t like mine as it tasted too much like liquorice (but we went for my birthday celebration and they took it off the bill as a present🫶🏻❤️). The staff were so so kind and super friendly, we were just chatting away and we they even gave us really good recommendations for dishes - super polite and knowledgeable about their restaurant. There is no competition as to what the best restaurant in newcastle is, it IS this one! 💖 (and I’m a simple girl so obviously my fave thing was the houmous and freshly made pita😘🤌🏼) NEED to go back for brunch!
Booked a table for 10am on a Saturday (nearly empty, should of just popped in), interia now looks different to alot of the pictures in terms of seating whch I would say is an improvement and nice if your looking for a quiet meal in an amazing old building. Nice to see lots of staff preparing for what im quessing will become a much busier day, I was served by the manager with service being prompt, friendly and professional. Ive uploaded a picture of the latest breakfast menu the one posted by other users is out of date, you wont be disappointed with its replacement, this can also be found on their website. I love scrambled egg, and having it with a croissant and beans was a great, amazing coffee and fresh orange juice, cant wait to come back. Only niggle would be: Please put some coat hooks on the doors in the gents. Keep up the the great work, see you all soon:)
I was not expecting the food to be that good! Everything tasted extremely fresh and well prepared. As well as a free pottery class. Brilliant. Staff was very lovely as well. Already looking forward to coming back.
Incredible food! I had the confit garlic and tomato Turkish bread and the apple and blackberry crumble cocktail - both were amazing. The atmosphere in there is lush too.
Super venue. Delightful food in the Mediterranean style, we ordered 10 sharing plates between 5 and that was plenty. Lovely laid back atmosphere, things going on but not in the way.
Been to Kiln many times, mainly weekends, and always had a good experience. Food is delicious - good quality and decent portions, they also have a great range of coffees and hot drinks. Staff always friendly. Time for a trip back soon i reckon 😉
I love this place, I eat glutenfree and they have many options and desserts too. The coffee and chai latte are lovely. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Great people to be around.
Had a delicious meal at the Kiln. The Middle Eastern food beautifully prepared. Loved the lamb chops and maple glazed roast carrots amongst other delights. Jenni provided our table service. Jenni thank you for your hospitality you made a perfect meal even more enjoyable xx
We stopped by for lunch and enjoyed the delicious food, although the portions were a bit small for the price. It's on the pricier side, but the taste made up for it. The atmosphere is fantastic, and I personally enjoyed the ambiance. Service was good too. Overall, a great place for a tasty meal in a lovely setting, despite the portion size and cost.
We came here twice during our weekend trip to Newcastle, so we’re pretty big fans. The flavours of the food and ambiance of the bar/restaurant are 5 ⭐️. However, we found the service to be a bit hasty in clearing our plates while we were still picking at dips. Secondly, the Turkish Breakfast was lovely,” - but it really needed a hummus or dip of some sort on the plate. Overall a great spot - the homemade sourdough pittas are incredible.
Food was nice although my eggs in shakshuka were a little underdone. Management sorted this for me fine. Lovely little place - a bit cramped in some places but love that all the crockery was hand made! One of the waitresses was a little too touchy feely with my boyfriend hence the 3* for service.
When I used to live near ouseburn, this is my favourite go-to cafe for brunch + work. I love coming here due to the vibes and lovely menu options. Haven't been back for a long time till recently. The decor has changed, I can't see the pottery space anymore which is slightly regretful. 😔 Otherwise , the food is still lovely, I love the longtime concept of small plates so we can try more different things. Nevertheless, a small suggestion which I think most people would be overjoyed with is if they serve at least 2 pitta breads instead of one per order. It's quite pricey to charge £3-4 for a small piece of pita bread. Be mindful this is in addition to your small plate (s). Would still recommend it for people coming for small bites or in between meals. Or be prepared to order at least a few small plates and sides, which will bring you to at least £30 per meal. (For breakfast/ brunch / lunch)
Visited Kiln today for the first time. Had guests with us and it was a visit for two people’s birthdays. No complaints of the food itself, However sadly the service was very poor which puts it on the list of places to return, very low. There was a long wait for food. Food arrived one hour after seated, drinks were further very slow. We were sat for some time before our order for drinks was even taken. This is understandable in a busy venue, however Kiln was extremely quiet when we were there, with lots of empty tables. The table next to us further had to ask where their food was due to being very slow. Although the waiter was lovely when taking our order, there was little service, no checking in, no attentiveness from other staff. Everyone was polite, however it was not the experience I thought we would have had.
It was ok. When we were seated, we were told all the drinks and dishes that were unavailable. Not a great start for a Saturday night, early evening. We ordered our drinks, but waited almost half an hour to place our food order. To then be told we had to order that in a particular order. The server always bordering on rude. After ordering our food in the required format, it was then a lengthy wait for it to arrive. The food was OK. An intriguing mix of spices, not to my taste. The forceful server came back to the table about 4 times to ask us, in overly bright tone, if everything was OK. It got quite irritating after the 3rd time, I've got to admit. The music got louder, which made conversation difficult without shouting to eachother. The wooden bench seating was the cherry on the cake. Sitting on a wooden bench, for a couple of hours is NOT fun. It was all very expensive and disappointing overall.
Food was tasty, but the overall experience was affected by the staff obviously wanting us out of our table to close up, even though we weren’t late. We were asked if wanted desert before we had finished our mains and then they were cleaning up around us. It was enough to put me off going back anytime soon.
I made the poor judgment call to order the Mezze platter. Now, kind reader, I don't want you to think I'm picky, I a gen z costumer with experience in hospitality. I'm the epitome of a good costumer. For 15.5 pounds PER PERSON, you too can enjoy 3 measly spoonfuls of (yes very nice) hummus + 2 very thin slices of sourdough + 2 halfs of a pitta bread. 15.5 pounds per person for hummus and bread. I repeat, 15.5 pounds for hummus and bread. For anyone thinking of coming here, do! it is a lovely place with lovely staff just do not get the Mezze platter for 15.5 pounds per person. the steak dish is 0.5 pounds more. Just do that, or spend your money on groceries to make it yourself, I'm not your boss.
Food was so bad, can't believe the price they charge for what they serve. Steak didn't have second to rest, so the plate became a pool of blood, not to mention that it comes with a tahini sauce (?????). Lamb chops had no seasoning and were not cooked properly. Service looked bothered with the feedback about the food, and the night ended up with they asking us to leave in 15 min, not even asking if we wanted any dessert, which apparently we didn't have the time do so (at this time was not even 1.5 h at the restaurant). They advertise a fancy lovely dinning and what you get is an expensive disappointing experience.
1/5 – Deeply disappointing service at Kiln Newcastle Visited on a Sunday and was met with some of the rudest, most dismissive service I’ve experienced in a long time. Despite plenty of empty tables, we stood waiting to be acknowledged while three members of staff ignored us—two of them too busy chatting about their weekend to bother with customers. Eventually someone muttered that they’d be with us “in a few minutes.” Ten minutes later, the person they’d been gossiping with wandered over and bluntly told us not to bother waiting because they were “fully booked until 1600.” No greeting, no apology, no basic courtesy—just an attitude that made it very clear they weren’t interested in serving anyone. Out of curiosity, we checked their online booking system while standing outside. Every single slot was available all afternoon. Make of that what you will, but it certainly felt like the staff had decided the afternoon wasn’t for working. A real shame, and an easy decision not to return.
