Opinions de Porterhouse Butcher & Grill Newcastle upon Tyne
I attended this place in fenwicks for lunch and was really impressed. Lovely table settings and glasses. We ate the sardines and burrata and they were absolutely delicious. My guest fell poorly after a doctors appt and we didn’t really feel we could carry on sitting there. The staff immediately cancelled the rest of our order and magnanimously allowed us to cut the meal short. It was great customer service. I’d love to return and give it another go.
Exceptional service and truly memorable food. The service was excellent and stood out right away. The food was incredibly delicious, with a creative menu from the flavorful steak sauce to the perfectly balanced Wagyu short rib bites, combining sous-vide tenderness with rich, buttery taste. Even the classic burger was unforgettable, with its rich bread, quality beef & cheese, and signature sauce. Highly recommended!
Quite gorgeous. It feels really classy, but there is a ghost town vibe once Fenwick shuts. I went for the restaurant week menu. The minute steak was meh. The oysters were really lovely and they do happy hour where it is £1.80 a shuck. Really really tasty red Thai curry too. The Earl Grey ice cream with the chocolate bomb was divine.
This is inside the food hall in Fenwicks shopping centre. The staff were amazingly friendly and made the whole experience worthwhile. The food was amazing and great for meat lovers with the staff knowledgeable of all the items on the menu. Definitely worth a visit.
Visited for lunch, advisable to book, can have saltwater menu in the porterhouse, recommend sitting in porterhouse if it’s a party over three people as there is proper tables rather than bar stools. Although you are in a department store it doesn’t feel as such. There is a set menu available on certain days of the week. We opted: for rockerfella oysters, crispy oysters, crab parfait, and chicken liver pate. Followed by tuna steak, wagyu burger, hake fillet, and beef stroganoff, all exceptional.
Great food and great location situated within the Fenwicks food court. Starters were amazing and the overall quality of food was fantastic. Steaks were served very rare unfortunately when asked for medium rare, thankfully very well rested so still really enjoyed and suspect it was more of a mix up rather than incorrect cooking. Really helpful and friendly staff, great food and great location will definitely return.
“highly recommend this establishment for a refined dining experience. The cocktails are expertly crafted and the service is impeccable. My partner and I visited for Sunday dinner and were delighted by the truly scrumptious roast beef and the excellent beef stroganoff. While the cost may be considered a bit high, it is commensurate with the quality of the food and service, making it a worthwhile indulgence."
Went for restaurant week, and it was absolutely delicious. We intend on going back to have an even better cut of meat. Everything was delightful.
Waited since pre COVID to visit here and partake in some lovely food. Went for the cheese and meat platter. Absolutely brilliant
Went in to Fenwick to have lunch, so we went there. we were not disappointed the staff were lovely
A truly wonderful dining experience — the food was absolutely delicious and the service impeccable. Highly recommend!
Situated downstairs in Fenwick you will find Porterhouse. They have a vast selection of fresh fish and meats to choose from. We had the prawn and smoked salmon cocktail, followed with a steak to share. The food was excellent and the service was very good too. I have been told they to a very good Sunday lunch.
The meat is exceptional quality and cooked to perfection. The sister business is the Saltwater seafood and fish restaurant so it’s possible to order from both. Outstanding place and staff. Love it here.
Fantastic food and a surprisingly good price for the quality. First time I've ever had fresh oyster as well and the server was very helpful in explaining how to eat it.
Always incredible food and service.
Fantastic food and service as usual

Great food and atmosphere 😎
Nice food and service.
Amazing service Just been at 0950am to get a cooked steak for my wife to take to hospital, to keep her iron levels up as she’s lost a lot of blood due to complications with our twins, staff couldn’t of been more amazing lady on front desk was more than helpful and the chef is a legend, cooked one of the best steaks my wife has ever had in record time, she’s very happy and by all the kicks and flutters so are the twins thank you very much We’ll be back for another hopefully under more relaxing circumstances
Amazing service from Francesca and her staff! Very knowledge and the food was great! Can’t wait for my next visit!
Great steak bar with first class steaks and great service
The food is amazing there and the wine selection is perfect.
The same boss with the fish company, high quality service and great food.
Absolutely fab...great unprotentious service . quality food
Brilliant staff and fantastic food.
Every time I visit Newcastle, this is the first and only place I go for food. The quality is always top-notch—especially the seafood and oysters, which are incredibly fresh and full of flavour. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service is consistently excellent. The staff are professional and genuinely friendly. A special shoutout to Camille—he’s always so kind, attentive, and welcoming. He takes the time to explain the menu, answer any questions, and help you choose the best dishes based on what you like. His recommendations have never disappointed! Whether you’re a seafood lover or just looking for a great dining experience in Newcastle, this place is a must-visit. It’s definitely my favourite spot in the city.
What a wonderful Lunch. Thank you . The food was amazing we were well looked after by Camille he was very friendly , professional and knowledgeable nothing was too much trouble. Fantastic . We will be back x
I’m a minority here, because I just came to the butchers counter for sausages. I have to say, they were the best quality meat I’ve ever tasted. Really worth the extra pennies for them. I was served by a Scottish fellow, sorry I didn’t get his name but he was very friendly and attentive and bagged my food up ready to take home. Lovely guy and it’ll make me come back. 1) Food quality. Brilliant tasting meat. 2) Lovely staff member. First time here purchasing, and I can assure you I’ll be back again. Thank you.
My wife and I had a date day booked here. A little treat. The service is great, one of the staff showing us immediately to our table, which was neatly laid out. We had a six oyster starter which is Lindisfarne oysters served with Tabasco and / or vinaigrette. We liked these and they came from the adjacent Salt Water restaurant which you can order from if you prefer a seafood type meal. We were there to try the steaks though and that is what we ordered. I chose the serloin and my wife tried a Wagyu steak as she had heard a lot about the quality and taste of Wagyu but never experienced it. Both came quickly and both meals were delicious, though from the slightly alarming noises eminating from the chair opposite, my wife was finding the Wagyu steak more of an epiphany than a simple steak meal. We did not try any desserts but the cocktails were OK and there was a good choice of wine on the menu. aprices are on the expensive side but worth it if you are going for a foodie experience rather than a quick bite out. Our meal came to around£75 each. We will be going back.
I was dining with a friend who is a regular visitor here. She normally opts for the hake but today we decided on the liver and bacon which was melt in the mouth gorgeous. We like a light red and our server recommended the montepulciano d'abruzzo which was a great pairing. The restaurant was busy and buzzing but the service was excellent. Thank you to the whole team. You were brilliant 👍
I have eaten here on a number of occasions and I absolutely love it. The food is always amazing! Porterhouse in my opinion does the best Sunday dinner in Newcastle. The service is great always made to feel very welcome. The staff are friendly and are very helpful. I have also bought meat from the butcher counter. I buy our Christmas dinner meat from here every year. The staff are always great at giving advice and making suggestions on how to prep at home. It's one of my favourites in the city and I will continue to eat here ❤️.
My wife and I came over from Portugal 🇵🇹 the celebrate the football Lunch at this restaurant I hade every intention of having a steak 🥩 I then read liver and bacon on the menu we both had it only word I can use is MAGNIFICENT Thank you all P. S. Fenwicks what a fantastic shop especially the food hall the only problem is the restaurant and food hall closing time I would love to go there in the evening
Amazing experience, cooked by the man himself and his fab team. Hubby claims the best chicken pate (with madeira jelly) he has had in his life! Steak was wonderful as was the whole experience, even down to seeing everyone muck in and leave the place spotless at the end of service. I went home with a fresh chicken and rare breed pork chop which was definitely a first! Treat yourself - go there!
A fabulous place, where you can eat both the food from the adjoining Saltwater Fish Company, together with wonderful steaks. In common with many English restaurants, it's better to order "blue" if you want a good "rare" but that aside it's amazing, we started with ceviche (can't eat here without having this wonderful dish) and moved on to fillets - we both had the same. Rishi made a small dint in our bill, thank you :D
Dined in for early dinner, when Saltwater rehoused me so I could sit at the bar. Seth was exceptional service and food from kitchen (fish) was amazing as always.
These guys go the extra mile and every year source me a quality pheasant and you can buy all the extras here, tho bread sauce was an issue ...maybe have tubs of this next year please Bacon the very best Eggs free range real farm eggs wow so tasty And himalayan dried beef i'll try next time I'll be back as Arnie wud say lol Best store in the country I kid u not Happy new year to all the lovely staff xo
I have to say this was the best seafood I have had in Newcastle by far! Being originally from Gibraltar, my standards are quite high when it comes to seafood so I recommend this place 100%. Everything else we ordered was also delightful, including the wine. We sat at the bar and conversed with the staff, who were very knowledgeable about the dishes and wine. The experience would not have been the same without their attention to detail and friendliness. Go on! Book a table. Order the Seafood Tower. You won't regret it.
Decided to visit here for 1st time for our anniversary. We really fancied a nice steak and we actually got a fabulous experience. Cote de boeuf cooked to perfection, but the middle cut fillet steak absolutely beautiful, probably the finest we have had. Prawn cocktail superb as was the terrine for starters. Excellent service all round , a broken glass tumbler was our fault, but staff cleared it without any issue or judgement. OK. This is not going to be the cheapest of an late afternoon dinner but as a one off special occasion, perfect. As a side note the place was packed, it was restaurant week, so the specials menu was going down a treat too.
Great express lunch menu with a good selection to choose from. Only issue we had is the server tried to bill us £10 more than the menu price.
Solo diner. I've never felt as invisible in any restaurant as I did here.
Firstly, this is a busy little spot in Fenwicks, we booked our table well in advance to ensure we secured our table as it was for a special occasion. Service was a little slow as it appeared regulars seemed to take priority, to the point we had been sat waiting a little while, others were served before us and got their drinks before we had even been acknowledged for an order, however we quietly persevered. We finally ordered, 2 fillet steaks from the Josper, chips, onion rings and bearnaise. It was nice but wasn't the wow factor we were expecting after eating at some of the World's best steak restaurants, it just didn't seem to hit the mark. Due to the service and the taste of the food, I'm not sure we would return as it was expensive for a fairly average meal on a lunchtime.
The venue is nice in a busy part of Fenwick food hall. The staff were all very nice and good service. The food was nice, though very expensive and not worth the amount we paid for a quick evening meal before shopping.
Couldn't fault the food or the helpfulness of the staff but feel I gave it mention the toilet situation. If you need to use the loo you have to walk through the shop, go up the escalator to the first floor and then across first floor to the toilets next to Cafe 21. If you need to go after Fenwick is shut you have to be escorted by a member of the restaurant staff. Not too great Mr Laybourne. Thus would stop me going back or recommending to friends.
Been a number of times food generally very good. Today though stood waiting whilst staff ate (11:50) I just wanted to book a table. Got a filthy look from a waitress who asked someone are we even open yet or something along those lines. Just looked hassled. Couldn’t be bothered so we left. Thanks for making my decision to go elsewhere today. I’m Sorry for disturbing your lunch in a restaurant. Won’t be back. Can highly recommend The Bonantist though a short walk away. Friendly staff happy to serve and welcome your business. Picture is the club steak which the first time I had it was amazing. The last was a lot fattier, not as good.
Steak shocking my husband asked for medium rare it came medium well my sons couldn't eat his it was all fat and grissel myself and youngest son steak was really tough we ordered chips but when arrived we were given skinny fries which were changed to chips by this point our steaks were on the table for 5 mins and ended up cold the peppercorn sauce was split and watery we did let a member of staff no this who just said i will tell the kitchen no offer of changing our steaks absolutely shocking £200 and walked out hungry
The chubby suited guy at the front desk appears to have a habit of telling tales about the place being fully booked. Several times we walked up only to be told that they were fully booked. Strangely however, when we subsequently checked on their online booking site, there were always free tables. Maybe he’s doing this to minimise his workload or perhaps Geordie phantom diners have a taste for steak but we smelled a rat and won’t be going back. Shame because we had previously enjoyed the food here.
After saying I'd never go back here I thought il give it another go I eat out most days and try and say positive things we went for express lunch starters a joke cods roe and oysters appalling steak tough chips over cooked the only positive thing I can say is young red head girl was absolutely lovly so on leaving I did give her 5 pounds 2 say the king is in his altogether sums it up will definitely not return
