We came here for a Christmas meal date night and we were not disappointed. It was a lovely place, the atmosphere was great and very festive. The food was amazing and great value for money. We both had a Christmas cracker on our table which was a very nice extra. The service was quick and friendly staff. We will definitely be going back and highly recommend. What a gem of a place ✨️.
I was advised by a friend's to try this restaurant out as its good food & by gosh I'm glad I did! Fast friendly service from the waitress! Absolutely devine meal, massive compliments to the chefs! Thankfully I was able to get in as it wasn't busy but I've no doubt it's busy come the weekends! If not then why isn't it as this was amazing! Worth every penny!
Haven't been here since spring 25, so was nice to return for the festive menu... food was outstanding and nice to see the menu du Jour being offered, (not publicily advertised and then turning up to be told it wasn't on that night, as had happened several times earlier this year)... bar staff were polite, the place was the busiest i have seen it... will be back again. A little gem... great selection of ales too and in perfect condition
Had the Pork Belly and it was perfectly cooked and tasty. The burger and chips were also very good. Lovely service. Would visit again
Perfect evening after a muddy stomp around Buxton Heath in the sunshine ☀️ Popped into one of our favourite local pubs & decided to try their seasonal du jour menu which is 3 courses for £25 or 2 courses for £21. The food was utterly delicious with fresh ingredients & attention to detail. The staff as always were lovely & welcoming. Plenty of space & free parking right outside 🅿️ Huge beer garden on grass 🍺 and the garden gets the afternoon sun which is perfection. A really lovely pub & worth popping along to as it’s just so easy to access & enjoy !
A warm welcome to begin with, with a good selection of drinks. Local ales were particularly of note. Not an extensive selection, but enough to be interesting. Pigeon breast to start was a real treat. Nicely prepared and presented. Rhubarb jus was tasty. Would benefit from a little more considering the portion size of the meat. Pork belly was superb! I'm glad I asked for extra apple sauce. This was great, but again needed a bit extra to accompany the portion size. All the elements were excellent, making a really great mouthful when combined. An important sign of well matched elements. Trout fillet was cooked beautifully! The sauce was really good, but not outstanding. A lovely cheese selection and Lemon posset for dessert. The lemon was fabulous, and a very well flavoured mango sorbet to accompany. After a bit of a hiccup at the start, service was really attentive and friendly. Definitely coming here again. Dog friendly, for those that care. :-)
Walked in without booking on a Monday lunchtime, friendly welcome, seated in a cosy restaurant area with open fire, perfect as it was a very wet and cold day. Very friendly waitress, great knowledge of the food, went for the seasonal offer and was not disappointed, absolutely amazing lamb burger and the hot chocolate and cappuccino cake was delicious. Would definitely recommend and look forward to going again! (Which will be very soon as I left my hat there!)
This is our second family Christmas at the Chequers, our first being 2023. We had another memorable experience, in a pleasant atmosphere with excellent service and weren’t rushed. We rebooked this year and it was as nice as last. I would recommend a visit and would guarantee you will not be disappointed 🎅🏻🎄🍾
Lovely rural pub, good beer and food
This is a pretty thatched pub with delicious food just outside Norwich. The service was attentive and friendly, and we had no complaints whatsoever. Would highly recommend the chicken supreme and the fish and chips.
Warmly welcomed, nice outdoor area with kids play area, food was stunning. Staff were nice and softly spoken. We could hear the pub quiz going on a few tables away and ended up joining in unofficially (and even got a few right - bonus we didn't though!)
Great pub, called on the day to book and was told plenty of seats available. Food was lovely couldn't fault any of it the waiters explained everything to us. Even down to the beers as was all home brewed
Pub food with a twist, tasty and with warm service. Cosy old pub atmosphere too. Will definitely come back!
Had a great last minute meal at the chequers tonight! Our servers Ella and daisy were very friendly and attentive and the food was great. Will definitely be back!
We had a lovely evening with impressive meals from their festive menu. Lovely service in a quaint building with a thatched roof.
Served by sophie and she was amazing!!!!!! The best service and a good laugh. Will be back!
I take my Mum out every Sunday for lunch and we like to try somewhere different each week. This weekend we went to The Chequers. We were served by the lovely Alice who is an absolute credit to the pub, bubbly, friendly and extremely helpful. Unfortunately we had quite a wait for food but I wasnt overly concerned as my Sundays are definitely chill time, although I could hear other diners complaining. The roast dinner when it arrived was lovely as was the dessert and we both said we would come again. There's a lesson to be learnt with the wait time but your lovely waitress and the food outway the negative.
Me and my wife had a great meal for Norfolk restaurant week. The food was simple but done very well and was a large potion making it good value. Our server Naomi was great with my daughter and kept her entertained and happy all evening which was great. The pub itself is a very old fashioned typical pub (which I personally like). My only regret is I did not get a chance to try their wide selection of beers and ales as needed to drive back home. Hopefully can try next time.
We had dinner for 6 people. The service was friendly and informative. The meals all came out at the same time, and were superb. I was especially pleased to see such a variety of gluten free meals on the menu which is very rare. I would highly recommend The Chequers whether you require a gluten free diet or not. There were also plenty of vegetarian, vegan and dairy free options.
We popped in after a walk for a sunday roast today, the veggie nut roast is fantastic, the beers are great too, dog friendly and loads of space outside. Cool old pub will definitely go again
Had lunch with friends as a part of the "Norfolk restaurants week". The menu was extensive with something for all tastes. The pumpkin soup and chicken, sausage meat roll quite excellent. Service was just as you want. The portions if anything were too generous. Be advised, if paying cashless you cannot add a tip. In this day and age that would seem to be harsh on the staff.
2nd time visiting here whilst on holiday and the food is delicious! Staff are attentive and we will be back
My friend and I had a three course meal here as part of Norfolk Restaurant week. The food was delicious, good quality and beautifully presented
We were so pleased with the level of service by the very bubbly and kind lady who served us today. Thank you for making what was a difficult day better. I would definitely recommend this pub. Very clean, good pub food and just an overall nice place. Thank you.
Bar and waiting staff were very welcoming and helpful. The food arrived quickly and was very good quality. (The chips were insanely good). 5 stars well deserved, cheers guys.
Went for a birthday meal. Very nice food. Staff member Ella was friendly and knowledgable
Second time visiting here, had the Sunday roast, 4 of us had the pork shoulder and 2 had the chicken. I must say this probably has to be the best roast dinner I have ever eaten out (I've had a fair few) and that's a big statement, the roast potatoes especially tasted amazing, 6 empty plates left on this table. Definitely compliments to the chef. Will definitely be returning for a 3rd visit and probably more. Keep doing what your doing!
Despite visiting on a Saturday afternoon, the pub and garden were quiet enough to enjoy a peaceful drink and a catch up with a friend. The food was great and reasonably priced for what it was, as was good quality. The staff were friendly, welcoming and super helpful while we were there and got out food out super fast (we had decided last minute to order food after having a drink and seeing / smelling other people's meals coming out). Lovely village pub, really a hidden gem (I know about it as I'm local, but my friend had never been and remarked how she never knew it was there despite visiting the greyhound centre in the village often!)
My husband and I popped in for lunch with an elderly friend. Food did not disappoint, was lovely and we highly recommend. Also special mention to our server/waitress Darcey. Nothing was any trouble, looked after us very well and was caring/considerate to our friend who loves to chat. We also noticed, not just friendly and happy with us but to other customers too. Thankyou Darcey.
We had an absolutely excellent meal from their festive menu. Scallops to start with, very nicely cooked. I had Guinea fowl, hubby had beef to follow. Both very good and food was served nice and hot. My favourite was probably the truffle mash. Proper mash not over creamed potatoes. Definitely happy to recommend.
Beautiful dog friendly pubs great atmosphere lovely character. Great service very professional but friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Great food very relaxing experience. Wonderful lunch all participants satisfied.
Really enjoyed our dinner, the food was really nice. We were served by Darcey, she was so friendly and lovely. Darcey was lovely to talk to and her service was absolutely incredible.
It’s a decent pub with decent food. Prices are pretty good and their roasts are lovey. The starters are a bit hit and miss though, some are nice and others have been a let down. One time we were sat for nearly 20 minutes until and order was taken(and it wasn’t very busy) but other than that, worth a visit
We stopped her on our way home from a trip to the coast, the staff were really welcoming, our food was hot and plentiful overall a lovely little pub and restaurant, I would of given 5 stars but they didn't have a child's menu so my daughter had a huge burger, which of course she couldn't finish, the Chequers also has a car park and beer garden with a nice kids play area ....(so why no menu?)
Surprisingly dead on a Friday evening. Food was excellent, but service was bizarrely slow considering there was barely anyone else in there. We were stuck on a small table by a draughty chimney, which was odd when as it turned out they could have given us any table. It took 30 minutes for our order to be taken. Staff just seemed to disappear. When we asked for our bill it came and then the waitress disappeared to clean the few other tables and seemed surprised when I wanted to pay. Very strange that this isn't more popular given the quality of the food and the interesting menu choices
Had lunch here Saturday. Lovely welcome and great service from Ella. Food was excellent. Only thing we found odd was the absence of a wine/drink menu. Will return.
Service always great, main menu meals are superb with a proper home cooked feel, nice selection of local beverages including spirits (which is rare around here). Only disappointment is the Sunday lunch to be honest. I've had 2 & both were just OK. I would highly recommend for any other meals & maybe it was just luck of the draw for the roasts but I would & will 100% go back for evening meals but personally I will be going to other local for alternatives for roasts (may just be personal preference). I might give one last try in a couple of months time & update accordingly
Had a lovely afternoon tea for my birthday thank you. So cosy by the fire and the food was lovely great service too. Took a doggy bag home of leftovers..there was plenty. Thank you x
Food was okay, room was cold (we ate wearing coats), the ladies' toilets are in need of refurbishment.
Party of 6 for evening meal. Great that we could take our dog into the bar area. Lovely attractive pub and fantastic welcome from the waitress/bar team Ella and Evie. However, the food was disappointing. Distinct lack of vegetables, very dry pastry with the butternut encroute and the plum strudel was raw and cold. Overall on reflection a disappointing meal although the atmosphere was lovely. A real shame. This is a lovely place with lots to offer, shame about the food.
This was our first time at The Checkers and while it had a lovely cosy atmosphere, the food was a bit more disappointing. My partner had the venison shoulder which should be a juicy bit of meat but unfortunately, it came out incredibly dry and without a sauce to accommodate. The idea was a bowl of lentils, which I'm told we're very nice but not enjoy to soften the dry chunk of meat. I'm unsure if this was just an off day or is regular for the pub but we left without dessert due to disappointment. Very reasonably priced, though.
We wanted a Sunday roast for a party of 12 and this was recommended by a friend. However, it was a very disappointing meal, the roast was bland, and the desserts were not nice at all, we didn't even finish it! The crumble was stogey and custard was gloopy. The yorkshire pudding was burnt and the gravy was watery. The pub itself wasn't that busy, yet it was still hard to get the waiters attention. However, that said, there was a girl who was friendly and apologetic to us when she served us, hence the 2 stars for service. There was quite some wait for the despite us ordering in advance as we were a big party group; even the kids ice cream took about 10mins to be served, we had to chase it! Overall, I wouldn't recommend but hopefully it was just a one off for them?
Always wanted to try chequers, we went for the Mothers Day set menu, service with a smile and to be made to feel welcome is paramount to me, unfortunately it was non existant here, I had the lobster bisque, although had the flavour the tiny cubes in it tasted plasticky, the roast was served cold and the beef tough and over cooked, New potatoes for roasties for me are no go, the rhubarb crumble smelt off and burnt and needless to say I did not eat it. Total cost for 3 adults £34 each
Went for a Sunday roast. Wasn't overly busy when we were there. Food was a huge let down. Lamb croquette starters were cold and mushy and had no flavour. Roast beef mains tasted lovely but were cold again, beef was tough and potatoes a bit card boardy, clearly it had been cooked much earlier and reheated (not enough). Such a shame because the flavour was lovely but spoiled by the temperature and toughness. Dessert was a let down also, barely any cookie dough in the sundae and the crumbles were luke warm again, generous servings but not warmed properly. Service was fine but nothing to shout about. Had to order our own food and drinks at the bar, starters and mains were served and cleared promptly but desserts took a while to arrive. All said, none of the food was warm enough.
The food is very dry and over cooked. In fact feels like it was heated up in an air fryer from the night before. Not sure how they can charge £28 for a main course that is not even cooked fresh to serve. The waitress was apologetic and was good with service but looking at the way she came back out to explain herself on the chefs behalf, I don't think we could say the same about the chef. Definitely giving this place a miss in the future.
It's obviously changed hands since i was there in 2020 and certainly not for the better. The girl behind the bar was constantly on her phone and I had to attract her attention every time I needed service. The pub was soulless and cold it was actually warmer outside and that was 20 Deg. In my opinion it needs a good deep clean to get rid of a foul dirty smelly. I ordered the ox liver( why not lambs) and my wife ordered the haddock. Waited 25 mins for it to arrive. Both dishes went back as the liver was very tough and the fish wasn't cooked properly it was slimy and smelt. If it was possible I would not give it any stars but it's not. We paid for our drinks and left. We will never step foot in this place again. Time to lean, time to clean We visited at 14.15 on Tuesday 9th July.
Our Christmas Day ruined. I would like to give no stars!!! We were put in a cold barn and not the pub - not what we booked. It was freezing. The door was open the whole time in December. There were no table cloths. Paper napkins. Very very cheap crackers. A candle, which remained unlit even though I requested it was lit. Not what you would expect on Christmas Day when it was £89 per person. To get to the said barn we had to go through the pub, outside and through the smoking area, which was unkempt and had dog mess on the path. It felt like going to a roadside cafe. The cutlery wasn’t even set out correctly 😳. My glass was dirty. The service was appalling. The food was dreadful. My father had one roast potato on his dinner. The sprouts were rock hard. We had to send our food back as it was burnt. Nobody was offered any condiments not even cranberry sauce. We had a metal disc in the pudding. The table was tiny and would barely sit 4 and there were 5 of us. They told us we couldn’t put one on the end as we would be in their way. But we couldn’t fit, let alone eat. They said nobody has ever complained, but we heard multiple complaints. The table next to us left and said they would never return. We also will never return. The attitudes of the staff and owner was disappointing. I overheard a staff member complaining about the customers.
The £23 "Tender" pork loin. Paid another £3.75 for a side of veg to make it a substantial mean so £26.75 in total. The veg was cold and under cooked and the pork loin was so dry it was pretty frankly horrible.
Worst dining experience and family meal in a very long time, for what was meant to be a birthday and family celebration. Very overpriced for basic meals - would give no stars if I could. Service was very slow, with food delivered 65-70 minutes after arrival. Pie of the week was bolognese pie - more Dolmeo than home made sauce and Pasta Primavera included burnt/synged pasta and cabbage as a substitute for samphire. Will not be going back.
Don’t be rude. We were ignored when we highlighted 2 meals were substandard because your establishment ran out of ingredients because you had a ‘hit’ the night before (as told by your waitress) No one was in a ‘mood’ as you put it and no one apologised from the party. Maybe because we were asked umpteen times if we wanted more drinks, desserts etc etc. why would we? End of
