Opinions de Vien Huong Restaurant Oakland
Heat in Oakland chinatown. The hu tieu (number 21 i think?) is really good. Gets crowded on weekends. Eat it for breakfast, brunch, lunch, whatever. Ca phe sua da is also great. Get full on delicious soup and wired on caffeine. Don’t know a better way to start a Saturday.
One of the best noodles soup in the Bay Area.
Vien Huong is a well-known restaurant that I've been going to since I was a little kid. They're most known for their noodle soups, particularly the Chow Jew Noodle Soups which have a combo of chicken, pork, and shrimp products. Some people like to order with soup on the side and eat their noodles dry with their sauces. I also really like their Beef Stew Noodle Soup which is very flavorful and their beef and beef tendon is very tender. Last but not least are their fried fish cakes. This place is family-owned and cash only.
Small place but excellent food. We had the chow jew ho fen, but you can customize it with egg noodles or mixed. We also ordered "dry" which has the soup on the side. The noodle is tasty even without the soup. The soup itself is great too.
It's an old Oakland Chinatown restaurant serving great noodle dishes. I particularly like the Satay beef ho fun. They have one in the Pacific East mall in Richmond too, but the original is MUCH better, trust me.
We have these where you want to go to lunch conversations at work all the time. The conversation gets old because we always go to the same place. Well, not today! My friend loves this place, but unless you get there early for lunch, there's going to be a wait for a table. He said our other co-workers won't go here because it's too crowded and they don't like waiting. This place is super loud as people chatter between bites of noodle soup. This is what everyone comes here for. #21 on the menu, the many different kinds of mix meats. I love the flat egg noodles, they cook them just right, chewy without being overcooked. Also there house chili oil is fantastic, not to spicy (my heat register is pretty high so sample a small bit to decide for yourself). This is the Chinese Chouchou comfort food I grew up with, maybe this is why I rather have noodles than rice. I'll be coming back more often with winter coming soon.
At 2pm, after a long hike, I was feeling thirsty and hungry. A bowl of Vietnamese rice noodles sounded really good. So I walked in and sat down as the only customer. There were two elderly ladies manning the shop. They were both at least trilingual (Cantonese, Vietnamese, and English) and English was clearly their least favorite. No matter... the seafood rice noodle soup (with a clear broth) was delicious and the ice coffee with condensed milk really hit the spot. All this for just $16 plus tips. Can't beat it in this economy!
One of the best classic Cantonese restaurants in the States. The noodles are some of the finest in California! In my opinion, one can just blindly order from it's menu and have a great meal. The place is nowhere near upscale. The service is quite basic, but gets one's needs addressed. The tea is bland and cheap. Dinnerware is equally cheap and unflattering. But who cares, the food is some of the finest. Don't miss this place if you want fine classic Cantonese noodles.
They have really good food and it's very authentic. The atmosphere lacks. And the service is okay to good.
Best as far as I am concerned, I enjoy the Beef Satay soup and the Seafood Ho Fun soup is also very good. I have been coming here for over 30 years without disappointment. The prices have gone up but it is guaranteed satisfaction so it is an easy choice to make.
There's never been anything wrong with this place in the last 20 years I've been going. It has always been one of the best noodle soup places I've been to and will always go to. I always get the chew jou vermicelli noodle soup with a fried fish cake appetizer. The quality of both dishes had never changed and that's amazing.
This is just one of those places that people know about all across the state, but feels like the spot across the street. We used to live two blocks away. Been there before, during, and after. Can something be delicate and full of taste at the same time? Their broth will satisfy anyone's palate, even those that don't like soup! Ask for the garlic on the side. And if you like kidney, or never had it, you have to give it a try. It's not for everyone, but it'll have you hooked if it is.
Great authentic Cambodian and Vietnamese food. Restaurant is overall clean, service is wonderful. Kid friendly, lots of seating, but regularly full, you have a small wait for a table. Which means it's good. Restrooms are kept clean and stocked. Handicap accessible. Street parking is limited. During Monday-Saturday metered parking.
This place came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. We tried the Chow Jew noodle and seafood noodle (chose hor fun for both). The noodles had a nice chew and the broth came separately and is clean yet flavorful. The staff were very nice too. There’s a sauce station where you can get your own mix of condiments including homemade chiuchow chili oil! There is a huge bottle of hand sanitizer there and the staff ask you to clean your hands before handling the sauces. Will definitely be back!
Came across this place when I was looking for places that does the dry style of Hu tieu (Hu Tieu Kho). Unlike the traditional Vietnamese/Cambodian style Hu Tieu, this place offers to Teo Chow version which is very similar. I grew up eating more egg noodles than rice noodles so I decided to #12 Mi Trieu Chau with soup on the side. I also ordered their sautéed kidney with ginger onion. Their sautéed kidney was very flavorful and the kidney was perfectly cooked! Kidney is one of those things that are very hard to clean and cook properly and this place does it very well. #12 with soup on the side brings me back to childhood. The noodles were the perfect texture with the right amount of oiliness that nothing sticks together. It was basically crack to me. The amount of noodles and toppings they give is very generous. I felt like I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant. After discovering these place, my husband and I have gone back 3 more times in the span of 2 weeks. I highly recommend this place! Pro-tip: they open pretty early, so try to go closer to opening time or relatively early as it gets busy and could have a wait closer to the usual brunch time.
Everything is very good but fried fish cake. It tastes weird and pricey.
Getting Teochew noodles in the USA is like a godsend. this is the closets I can get of the Chinese Teochew style fishball/ Mince pork noodle . the fishball is really good and all the garnishing is the way I like it !noodle texture is just right and they have the correct condiments to mix the noodle ( which is the dry type I ordered) .. Overall best noodle I can get in the US of A besides the one I get back in Singapore
Five stars for the egg noodles - bouncy, chewy, homemade. Highly recommend asking for fried garlic to add to your dish. Fast service, great soup!
*2/25/2024 I ordered the mixed noodles with both ho fun and rice noodles. The broth is light and clear, and it comes with lots of toppings like chili, sriracha, hoisin, vinegar, and Vien Huong's special chili sauce. There's a mix of meats in the dish—shrimp, fish balls, pork balls, pork pieces, kidney, and your choice of sliced chicken or pork—all served with your favorite type of rice noodles. The homemade chili oil and pickled jalapeños give it a spicy kick, making the flavors really pop. 1/25/2024 No. 21 Chow Jew Ho Fun is a dish featuring shrimp, fish balls, pork balls, pork bits, kidney, and your choice of sliced chicken or pork, all harmoniously paired with your preferred rice noodles. The addition of homemade chili oil and pickled jalapeños provides a spicy burst, delivering that extra kick! The flavorful combination keeps me coming back for more. Venturing into something new this time, I got the fried fish cake. It proved to be incredibly tasty, although the only drawback is its slightly higher price for relatively smaller portions. But, it's definitely worth a try! *Tip: Cash only. 12/27/2023 Vien Huong's No. 21 Chow Jew Ho Fun is a monthly ritual with my friend! Their exceptional chicken broth, light and clear, is unmatched. After trying other places, I keep coming back for its distinct flavor. What makes Vien Huong special is the thoughtful addition of kidney, setting them apart. The dish includes shrimp, fish balls, pork balls, pork bits, kidney, and your choice of sliced chicken or pork—all perfectly paired with your preferred rice noodles. Vien Huong adds a spicy burst with homemade chili oil and pickled jalapeños, providing that extra kick! A flavorful experience that keeps me hooked! *Tip: Cash only. 11/27/2023 No. 21 Chow Jew Ho Fun takes center stage on their menu. This time, I tried their mixed noodles with ho fun and rice noodle. The chicken broth is a light and clear base for their impressive array of condiments such as chili, sriracha, hoisin, vinegar, and Vien Huong's house-made chili sauce. The dish features a generous medley of meats—shrimp, fish balls, pork balls, pork bits, kidney, and your choice of sliced chicken or pork—all served with your preferred type of rice noodles. The homemade chili oil and pickled jalapeños add a spicy burst and extra kick, creating a delightful flavor combination. We also tried their Sauteed Kidney with Ginger Onion, which I really enjoyed and highly recommend if you are not apprehensive about eating pork kidney. The kidney is well-seasoned and flavorful, with a crunchy but not mushy texture. The onions complement the kidney really well, even when paired with the Chow Jew Ho Fun. *Tip: Cash only. 10/23/2023 Vien Huong Restaurant is a hidden treasure. I revisited this place, and it's just as amazing as ever. Their No.21 Chow Jew Ho Fun takes center stage on their menu. The chicken broth is light and clear, giving you the perfect canvas to season to your liking with an impressive array of condiments. They offer chili, sriracha, hoisin, vinegar, and, of course, Vien Huong's house-made chili sauce. This dish is a generous medley of meats, including shrimp, fish balls, pork balls, pork bits, kidney, and your choice of sliced chicken or pork, all served with your preferred type of rice noodles. Their homemade chili oil adds a spicy burst of flavor, and the pickled jalapeños give your meal an extra kick, creating a delightful flavor combination. *Tip: This restaurant is cash-only, so be sure to come prepared. The prices are incredibly reasonable. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how affordable it is. Not to mention, the service is lightning fast; I can finish my meal in about 15 minutes and be on my way. Parking can be a bit challenging, but it's a minor inconvenience for the fantastic food.
Cash only restaurant that is worth the hurdle! Lunch time is cery busy and the staff hustles and bustles to get you in asap. Food is authentic as it gets. I went with their popular dish - #21 Chow Jew Ho Fun which is also know as Hu Tieu. Pork Broth is clear, savory and rich. Liver is tender and not too irony. Will come back to try other dishes here.
For those keen on savory Asian breakfast, this Chinese-Vietnamese noodle house in Oakland Chinatown is unbeatable. Though a bit divvy from the outside, the dining room is tidy and the atmosphere authentic — complete with wontons being handmade from the back table. #20. Cambodian Ho Fun: cooked-to-perfection, chewy rice noodles served in light, clean-tasting broth. Topped with pork slices, hand-cut ground pork, shrimp, fish balls and kidney. Garnish to taste with chili sauce and oil, hoisin, and jalapeño vinegar. Personal preference to leave the broth unadulterated (perfect as is!) while making a dipping sauce for the yummy soup toppings. An Oakland gem.
12.2024 update: Revisited the restaurant in a recent Monday for satay egg noodles. The place got updated a bit with new tables and photos on the wall. Was surprised to see a queue on Monday. There is much less crushed peanuts in the satay noodles now. With everything going up, I guess the restaurant needs ways to control the cost. Unless you're a regular here, you may not notice the difference because it was probably too generous with the peanuts ingredient. Other than that, the noodles tasted as good as I remember. 2019: This is an Overseas Chinese restaurant. You are more likely find their foods in Southeast Asia than in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Mainland China. Their stirred fry pork kidney is superb, so are their pan fried fish cake. All their noodle soups are excellent. I particularly like their beef sate noodle soup. And you can get superb Vietnamese coffee here too. The owner and many staff are from Vietnam.
Some of the quickest service in all of Oakland. Even if there is a wait, put your name down and you will be seated very quickly. The food is delicious and the portions are very big. I always get their signature dish. Chow Jew Ho Fun, which has a clear broth and combination of seafood and meat protein. Highly suggest it. If you are hungry go for the large as it only is a couple of dollars more. They offer you free hot tea when you sit down. The food comes very quickly after the order placement.
How does this place not have more reviews?! It’s been a staple in Oakland since the late 80’s. It’s canto Viet fusion. A hearty bowl to warm your soul. Cash only. Came on a Sunday lunch time and it was insanely busy. Great hole in the wall spot to cure your hangover or soup craving.
Great hole In the wall Vietnamese restaurant. I’ve been going for years with my best friend who introduced me to it! The best soup on the menu is #21 hands down
This place is so good reminds me of Pho but broth and ingredients are different, bowl is big with plenty of meat and noodles . Complementary tea is served One of the best noodle spot in Oakland , cash only
Went with a friend and of course like any good restaurant when it's busy you know it's good. I've known this place for many years. They get you in, serve you fast, and get you out. Servers and staff always friendly and awesome. Highly recommend! Please support small business! I had the number 11. Wonton tried chau noodles.
The Fish Ball and Fish Cake Fun is awesome. Start with just a little hot sauce. You never know how spicy the sauce can be (Hint: home made crazy hot sauce). It is all home made! You don’t need to go to sauna once you finish the hot soup mixed with chili sauce.

Get the Noodles. Very good Chow Jew Ho Fun. The entire restaurant seemed to be eating the same thing so I knew that this must be their specialty signature dish. I opted to go half egg noodles and half rice noodles which come with a good number of toppings that asians like myself tend to love i.e fried fish cakes, stir-fried pork kidneys, green onions, etc. Very good Vietnamese Iced Coffee too. Strong enough to kick someone off of their hangover by force; just how I like it.
Don't let the crummy storefront scare you. The dining room is clean. The menu is full of choices for soup noodles, pan-fried noodles, fried rice and much more. Unfortunately, there are no photos in the menu. Service is quick and your food comes promptly.
Yummy noodle soup. This is one if the oldest establishments in Oakland Chinatown. It is like a smooth machine. They get u in, give u a menu along with some hot tea or cold water. As soon as u order your food, within a couple of minutes, your food is in front of u. U eat, u pay...Next customer... Love the food here..
At this location, the fried garlic is served separately—a detail I truly appreciate. I also really enjoy their thin egg noodles, which strike a perfect balance between chewy and tender without becoming overly soft. However, the dish tends to be quite oily, so if you prefer lighter meals, this might not be ideal for you. My usual order is the Number 1 without kidney, with the soup served on the side. I also always add fish cake as an appetizer. The total cost for two regular dishes plus one appetizer comes to $53.75. What I love about this restaurant is how it evokes the authentic flavors of Thailand’s street food, especially the dry yellow egg noodles. While it doesn’t include traditional Thai-style char siu or wontons, the taste remains quite close to home. This well-established Chinese restaurant impresses me with its surprisingly clean restrooms, likely due to my morning visits. Parking can be difficult, as only metered street parking is available. The branch tends to be busy, so clear communication with staff is important. Although there may be a short wait, the service is attentive and friendly.
Always a must stop for anyone visiting the East Bay. This hole in the wall is where you get the best Trieu Chow noodles. They even make their own chili satay sauce that is spicy and flavorful. If you have to try any Chinese noodles in Chinatown, come here and you will not be disappointed. They have something for everyone. This is for the authentic taste buds. Best bowl of noodles in Chinatown hands downs but it’s a tiny location and parking is horrible. Bring cash. Follow me @Only1Christinelu (IG & TikTok) 1.5M on Google
It's VH. Can't go wrong with getting #21. If you don't like this type of noodles, then you are wasting your time reading any other of my reviews. 👍 Update: 07/10/2023 Another visit to VH. Had the #21 with mixed noodles (ho fun & yellow egg noodles) today. Yum, yum!... 08/14/2023: #21 with mixed noodles. 03/11/2024: Got the Beef Stew Ho Fun today...Not my "norm", but I try to switch it up every now & then...the beef was soft and the tendons were cooked to perfection that I just bite right through it...yuM!...anyhow, just read a "review" from an non-Asian complaining...it's funny how these people give their opinions when they are clueless of the food they don't "normally" eat...they should probably stay away from restaurants that doesn't serve hamburgers or hotdogs...😅😂🤣🤣🤣 Update: We frequent this restaurant weekly. Can't have enough. 👍👍
2nd time at Vien Huong and another lovely experience. The three of us came for a late lunch on Saturday. Place was quite full but we easily found a table and sat down. Staff is friendly and place is casual. Bathrooms are really clean which is always nice. Cash only so come prepared ;) Between the three of us we shared: - steak bell pepper from house specials $13.5 - shrimp chow mein from the noodle menu $12 - rice We weren't super hungry so this was quite enough for us three. We polished the plates! Food was really good and super light, not your typical greasy chinese I guess because it has more Vietnamese influence. We all loved the steak with bell peppers and not that impressed with the noodles. Would love to come back to try out their soups - yea we still haven't tried them boohoo!
Great place for a bowl of noodles. Not to mistaken for Pho. It's #21 on the menu. The bowl comes with Ho Fun noodles (large rice noodles - you can ask for thin rice noodles or even sub for yellow egg noodles.), shrimp, pork, chicken, meatballs, fishballs, ground pork & pork kidneys. I have seen people complaining about the wooden chopsticks. Stop complaining and ask for to-go chopsticks or even a fork. We all know the ones complaining are probably folks who probably don't even know how to use chopsticks properly. All in all, please do drop by if you're in the area. Enjoy!

I have seen people complaining about the wooden chopsticks. Stop complaining and ask for to-go chopsticks or even a fork. We all know the ones complaining are probably folks who probably don't even know how to use chopsticks properly. All in all, please do drop by if you're in the area. Enjoy!
The service is good but the food is so so. My friend's order (soup noodle) didn't cook well and they had no problem to give him a new one. My order is Beef satay soup noodle and New Chung Kee (Milpitas) is better and cheaper. Beef satay soup noodle is only available at "Chao Zhou (潮州)+ Vietnamese" style restaurants so I use it to judge the food quality. To be fair, the fish cake is OK. My friends orders look OK but nothing impressive. BTW it's hard to find parking at Oakland Chinatown so if you live far away then don't bother.
We tried two dishes during my visit. #21 - The broth was light and clean, and the ingredients tasted fresh. If you prefer a mild, simple flavor, this is a good choice. #10 Seafood Ho Fun was disappointing. It came with only a few small pieces of squid and two shrimp, but a huge amount of noodles. The broth was extremely bland, and for the price it didn’t feel worth it. The restaurant is cash only, and although the menu says prices include tax, the overall pricing still felt misleading. I probably wouldn’t return.
Don't order takeout, they're very conservative with their portions vs when you dine in. I ordered sparerib ho fun and I didn't have enough broth. Really disappointing

This place is for when you have no regards professional service and cleanliness. When you sit down, don’t look on the ground and don’t try to peek into their kitchen. Food is better on the week days than weekends I think is because the kitchen is not as busy and you actually get better quality food. Had their ho fun noodle soup, chow mein, wonton noodles. Definitely more meat and toppings than other places. Downside is they charge extra for “every thing”.
Very disappointed, don’t trust the hype of the other tourists review. Prime example of seeing people standing in line and thought this is the IT place. Very expensive, should have down priced at 2/3 of everything on menu. For example, seafood Ho Fun (flat noodle) $15.75 Cash only presented with 95% noodle, one piece of shrimp, two piece of fish cake, three pieces of squids. Unless you like to chew on plastic, avoid! Plenty of other good restaurants around.
I’ve been eating here since the mid 90s! It was good, quick & affordable! That’s no longer true! Like 90% of the restaurants in the entire Bay Area after the Pandemic! It’s gone from affordable to $18 for a bowl of noodles! $18 was 6 months ago, might be over $20 now! They were raising their prices every two weeks because I would pick up take on my way to work every Sunday! The taste & flavors are similar to pre pandemic but you can tell they are try to skimp on their ingredients. Everything is smaller or less now. The popular & favorites are their House noodles, fried fish cakes and stir fry kidneys! Skinny or flat egg noodles or flat rice noodles. It used to be packed from 7am-7pm and half would be locals! They’ve finally priced out all the locals! Now It’s all young people here! I used to deviate from my route going home or to work to make a stop here. Between the prices, parking, and how dangerous it is to be in Oakland! It’s no longer worth it nor the food is so good I have to come anymore! They also have another location in the Asian Mall with Ranch 99 in Albany but this place can never match the flavors of the original location in Oakland! These pictures are from March of 2020

Ordered takeout 20 minutes before arriving at the restaurant, which was only about half full when I got there. After paying, I ended up waiting an additional 40 minutes, making it a total of an hour just to prepare two simple orders. No updates or communication from the staff at all. This isn't the first time—it's happened twice now. Really disappointing service, especially considering the place wasn’t even that busy
