Opinions de Xochi the Dog Cafe Oakland
Splendid warm, accommodating, and thoughtful staff. Pleasant atmosphere created by contentious patrons.
Had a delicious iced tea under the shade (and scent) of a lemon tree on the patio yesterday afternoon. Thank you so much for the sweet space! I’ll be back.
Lovely neighborhood coffee house with small bites and tipples on offer. Great garden, a perfect place to meet the neighbors.
Good pricing, and always have a ton of adorable dogs. The back yard cafe area has a great energy - super peaceful.
A quaint little cafe with a few food options. Outdoor and some indoor seating.
The coffee and food was perfect in every way. Staff was friendly and chill. Pups are an added advantage.
We love this place!! Great location and sweet little backyard patio. Coffee is great, a few beer options, everything you would want in a little neighborhood cafe. Horchata Latte is bomb!!!
Super cute café with shaded courtyard seating that’s nice for small groups and dogs! In addition to coffee/tea, they also serve beer and have a selection of hot foods (empanadas, grilled cheeses, etc).
This cafe is great! There's a nice open courtyard to relax and enjoy your coffee/pastries in. Also there are so many cute dogs milling about in the sun. The pastries are so good - can't wait to go back
Fantastic little coffee shop in Oakland! the staff are super kind and friendly, and they have a really diverse menu - from coffee to teas to pastries to beer. Also, it’s dog friendly which is a huge bonus.
I've been waiting for this cafe to open when I saw signs posted pre-covid! It's so nice to have a cafe just a couple blocks from our home for coffee and an empanada while seeing the neighborhood dogs being walked. Friendly staff, cute space! Looks like they have beer and wine too.
The bacon and onion croissant is a great way to start one’s morning. Friendly staff, nice patio, high quality goods, and clean restroom.
Wow, I stumbled upon this place out of the blue after picking up Champa Garden right down the street. Such a charming, dog-friendly and delicious cafe! What a great opportunity to connect with my neighbors. I’ll be here regularly :)
Tasteful indoor and outdoor space, delicious horchata lattes and a diverse selection of beer and wine. Great to have a local (non-chain) café so conveniently located. Thrilled!
Really beautiful local coffee shop. We also came back in the evening to get a glass of wine and empanada! Very kind staff and sanitary inside and out on the patio. This is my new coffee shop!
Horchata latte is delish! Not too sweet, still flavorful. Cafe peeps are v friendly and the space is lovely! So happy they’re here.
Great coffee, matcha and pastries. Super cute inside. Staff are chill and nice. Outdoor patio is great.
I go in semi frequently. Positive vibe, quick beautiful garden, dog friendly. Though I do wish they could do Oat Horchata, I bet it would be as amazing as their other drinks!
Great community spot with a beautiful backyard.
I was surprised at how busy and popular it was here, but they were very fast and friendly! I enjoy drinking coffee outside under a tree with my friends and family. It's very cozy.
I love this place even though the dog policy changed - pets are no longer allowed inside and I'm pretty sure it's because someone SNITCHED to the feds. Anyway, great coffee.
Lovely coffee shop. Great atmosphere, great coffee (I've gotten their blends a few times to brew at home), helpful staff, and a really nice location.
great vibes, great coffee, wonderful community coffee shop - love the outdoor patio seating!
I love this place! They have a cute little yard in back where you can sit and eat and they have the very best grilled cheese sandwich (classic on sourdough)! Reasonably priced.
great coffee , super nice staff ,great lil back yard for consuming yo coffee and snacks , ill admit i was a lil skeptical of this place when i saw it being built ,but it has become a welcome part of our neighborhood ,the samosas are smackin and so is the vegan empenada
Great neighborhood restaurant, wish they were open in the evenings
Lovely local coffee joint with a relaxed vibe. Friendly dogs sitting out front with their owners. Delicious quiche!
My husband I visit this cafe a lot. We love it, the coffee is fantastic and I like their horchata too. They have a lovely outdoor space in the back, seating on the sidewalk if that is more your style and some indoor seating as well. The staff is friendly and all the dogs that visit everyday are great too.
Matcha is the best in Oakland 🥹 (if you know better I’m down to try) the mushroom empanadas are sooooooo good and the back patio is super cute
Had the quiche and london fog while i did some work, they were delicious and well worth the cost in my opinion.
Haven't had food yet, but the spot has a cozy and chill vibe to it. Good music being played too. Solid coffee, tea, and sparkling lemonade
I’ve lived in Oakland for 4 years and just discovered this place today! So glad I did. Really great atmosphere, food was delicious- we tried the carne empanada and the mushroom empanada and they were both really good! As was the lavender latte - they make the lavendar syrup in house and the quality was 👌🏽. Service was excellent, too.
Look, it's a coffee place. It's dressed up in the whole gentrification aesthetic and their menu isn't exactly a revelation but they do what they do well and their backyard space is lovely. That people bring their dogs here to relax is fantastic. Honestly, every neighborhood should have an establishment like this.
Excellent coffee, amazing service, delicious food, and a beautiful garden patio. I am not exaggerating, I literally re-budgeted so that I could come here at least once a week. The lovely folks who work here are so kind every time I visit, the food+drinks are consistently top-notch, and the garden space out back is serene. If I could rate Xochi at 6 stars I would.
Xochi is my go-to neighborhood spot, but I'd come by even if I didn't live in the neighborhood! The staff is wonderful, and the community is warm and welcoming, and there's always lots of cute dogs around. Come for the empanadas, pastries, warm beverages, and lovely courtyard.
Amazing coffee shop with the best staff ever - so friendly and helpful! Delicious food & drinks. Love the vibes and outdoor seating area. So awesome to have such a sweet spot in the neighborhood. Looking forward to spending lots of time here!
This is a neighbor good little cafe where you can sit outside with your puppers and doggos. Or if you are with humans you can sit inside. They have little dog treats for your fluffies. It's a wee bit pricey but delicious sandwiches and handcrafted coffee beverages. I get the mocha and sometimes a xochi sandwich which is so delicious
Great place to bring your dog, have a coffee, hang out on the patio. Owner is building a community center next door. Neighborhood jewel
Well I already had a favorite cafe, Cafe Santana in the Laurel, and NOW we have a tie, with Xochi the Dog Cafe making A VERY impressive debut over in the Bella Vista neighborhood. Great coffees and pastries, including killer locally made empañadas, yummy grilled sandos, nice tea selection, friendly young baristas, interesting changing art on the walls, and A REALLY NICE outdoor patio space to hang, along with a line of sunny sidewalk tables where dogs and their people convene daily. Dog- and family-friendly vibe. Canines and their people give this spot two paws up! It's definitely a locals' treasure. Check it out.
Xochi’s like your best friends gorgeous well-behaved dog who greets you with a waggle and a soft nose and knows exactly when to lay down softly next to you and when to get up for a play or roll over for a belly rub. A dream. I get the warm gooey sourdough grilled cheese and an oat matcha to enjoy in the sun while I write or work or wink at my neighbors or watch the little orange fish in the big planter float around. I love it here.
Cute and cozy neighborhood cafe. Delicious coffee and pastries (I'm a big fan of their iced oat milk lattes), friendly staff, peaceful design, and an adorable and welcoming garden courtyard tucked away in the back. One of my favorite spots in the Bay!!
Amazing family owned place. Great for dogs and kids. Food and coffee are delicious, though I'm not a fan of the horchata latte. If you aren't in the mood for coffee, they have draft beer.
This cafe is the spot 🙏🏼. Walked in and was so welcomed by the super nice staff, and then the food and drinks were great too. So glad this spot opened in the neighborhood. Talked to the owners guess they were born and raised in Oakland, and was curious about the eclectic menu and how they thought of it, guess the owners are of Korean and puerto rican descent, and want to in corporate those flavors and ideals to the menu in the future. Come check out this cafe, and it’s great patio outdoor eating area ☕️🌳.
Super cute neighborhood coffee shop which apparently also serves draft beer and is open until 4. We bought latté and ice tea earlier and eyeballed some delicious looking pastries. Friendly barista and dog friendly with water bowls outside. Great to have it in the neighborhood.
Excellent coffee shop! I had an iced Americano and it was delicious. The outdoor patio is nice, and the chairs on the sidewalk. Good place to grab coffee, some food, and catch up with a friend or just enjoy the atmosphere.
Great coffee & empanadas. The espresso (La Marzocco Linea) was bright and sweet. The staff was welcoming and accomodating. Good vibes.
Cute place, very trendy - excellent empanadas, hand whisked matcha and well brewed drip coffee. Nice to have a spot in the neighborhood to grab coffee or a beer (would benefit from some non-IPA options on tap).
This quickly became our favorite neighborhood coffeeshop. Our favorite coffee spot in Oakland really. I always order the horchata latte with a milk alternative. My dear friend swears by the mochas. Great empanadas as well and a sweet backyard setting to enjoy it all in the moment. The best part is definitely the staff, and the cute neighborhood dogs that stop by in the mornings.
Great wifi, comfy indoor and outdoor seating, and just enough background noise to help concentration but not enough to distract. Xochi is a great place to catch up with a friend or get some work done. It’s a cozy neighborhood corner shop, so there was plenty of space to sit for a bit on a Sunday afternoon.
Delicious coffee and pastries from Starter! Very dog-friendly, plenty of outdoor seating, great for sitting & writing. Love this place.
Neat neighborhood coffee shop to hang out at. Simple food and drinks menu with wide appeal, featuring the standard fare of the modern east bay coffee shop. The only things missing are a panini press and bagels. Though I can think of many coffee shops with near identical menus, Xochi does serve a unique setting and environment. Nice backyard/patio and interesting artworks hung up and around. Sweet and bright latte attributed to their medium roast espresso and proper heating of milk. The barista in me says air should have been added more slowly and constantly, rather than through long rises and falls/slow pulsing, as I can discern large bubbles. Your hot drink will let you sit outdoors for the upcoming cold weather. The drinks are also cheaper than at most other shops
Good coffee and their food selection is beyond the same old muffins and cookies. The back patio is adorable with shady and sunny spots. The outdoor seating is perfect to grab a drink with your dog in toe. Staff is really friendly with great service!
This place is a gem! It’s located in an area that desperately needed a local coffee shop/ hang out spot. 5 stars because it is dog friendly! There is a seating area in the back that’s adorable to spend some time in. The espresso is rich and smooth and the little pastries they offer are always baked perfectly! My partner enjoys the empanadas and I like the vegetable quiche. Finally, a veggie quiche that isn’t entirely composed of onions, tomatoes or mushrooms! I enjoy that it is walking distance since no other coffee shops or breakfast spots seem to be this close. Obviously, the prices are a little high for the area, but rent isn’t cheap either. I can say you do get quality for your money though. Before this coffee shop, it was a liquor store that got quite a bit of business, but we have about 4 convenience stores within walking distance from this place so it’s not missed.
I love the people I met from my neighborhood it was really welcoming and very friendly nobody was afraid of anybody and it's small on the inside which is okay cuz you can sit outside and you get a good conversation and you'll be there for hours and hours which I was! But I think also for me is seeing how dog friendly this little place is and I was very impressed even some of the dogs are busy and don't want you to pat on and you go on by yourself but they'll lick your hand or jump up on you and want to kiss you I'm a dog person so it didn't bother me and with anybody common sense is you ask the owner for permission to pet your dog and or if the dog is friendly etc etc. So I love the neighborhood and I definitely will support it and go there again it was wonderful very wonderful.
Cool cafe especially if you have a pup! Nice choices and servers are so nice and accommodating. But really the best part is to bring your pup and let them roam around greet-sniffing other pups in the cafe or in the backyard. It’s social fun for them while you chill with your coffee!
Awesome locally owned spot! Great coffee for the morning, different snacks & pastries everyday and a wide selection of beverages for the afternoon. The back patio is dog friendly and has spacious seating options. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, I know they are smiling beneath their masks :) Would recommend to a friend.
in love with this place, have been coming for a few years now and I’m so grateful it exists. The Xochi sandwich with slaw and turkey and crispy cheese is such a light but rich and acidic balanced go to of mine. They may not have pour over but their drip is some of the best drip out there, tastefully executed each time haven’t had a miss yet. They even have some seasonal unique one off that are always fun and tasty. The backyard space is so so peaceful, they may not allow dogs inside but the dogs are certainly hanging all around on the outside ! It’s hip, comfy, tasty, peaceful. the vibes are good.
Lovely cafe, very community oriented and it is apparent from the moment you arrive before even walking in. Today there was someone giving away free green apples outside, and when I came in I had a lovely maple cardamom latte and a sandwhich. Have been recommended to this cafe in the past, was very happy to give it a try! Will come back ;)
Loved the atmosphere and the people. There is an outdoor patio for dogs and seating by the cafe. We got the espresso tonic and the earl grey iced latte with oat milk. Apparently on Saturdays there are a lot more dogs. 🐶 the empanadas were warm and delicious. There are trash cans outside but the tubs for your cups and plates are inside the cafe.
So lucky to have this place in the neighborhood. Delicious coffee and snacks with a really cute outdoor garden and friendly staff and customers. A true community meeting place. Note that dogs are no longer allowed inside the cafe, only on the back patio and sidewalk.
Great place for you and doggie to relax and enjoy coffee ☕️. Ample patio ans sidewalk space. Interior is tight for groups but excellent for singles. Check out when in the neighborhood.
This place is seriously cute and you can totally get your fill of dogs and coffee here. There is plenty of on street free parking. The menu is small but mighty, with nicely curated and classic offerings such as drip coffee, espresso etc. The pastry selection is high-quality and tasty. There is a lovely garden in the back with tables and chairs that smells of Jasmine. There are water bowls for visiting dogs. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The ambience in the sweet little neighborhood joint is on point! Free Wi-Fi is always great 👌
This is one of my favorite cafes in Oakland. Their espresso drinks are solid, they have a great food menu with pastries from starter bakery and a small selection of sandwiches, and a beautiful back patio for enjoying drinks with friends or while teleworking. But what makes this place special is the community they create - they are always rotating local artists on the walls, and they host events every few months to feature pop up businesses or to fundraise for a good cause. I’ve even donated blood a few times. And of course - the cutest dogs!! They sell beans from Grand Coffee roasters based in SF. No pourovers and their batch brew tends to be a bit darker, but their cold brew is really good. They always have a few vegan savory options.
Possibly my favorite cafe in Oakland, good enough to be worth walking ~20 minutes from the lake to visit weekly. Can recommend the great ($4.00) cold brew, empanadas (solid vegetarian food options available), as well as the Original Pattern Brewing taps they have. Cold brew, tastey bites, and beer in a quiet residential neighborhood? That hits all the marks. The building is quite adorable with a small, hip interior and a SPACIOUS, dog-friendly outdoor seating area with shade and privacy from the street. Don't be put-off by its relative proximity to East Oakland -- this is a safe location if that is a concern. You may not have many reasons to be in the area, but if you're trying to check out the locals-only cafe scene in Oakland, this place is perfect. I've probably come here 20 times and every staff member has been incredibly kind, as well.
Cute little corner cafe with great drinks and good food! The quiche is great. They have chai! Didn’t see it on the menu but asked for it and it was delicious!
A humorous name for a wonderful cafe in the San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland. I had to go just based on the name and wasn’t disappointed! Great coffee and outdoor seating. Line out the door on Sunday morning, but worth the wait. #oaklandexperiences
This is my favorite Cafe in Oakland. Born and raised in this neighborhood, and we have been needing a safe/ welcoming space where the community can gather and eat good food, and drink delicious coffee. The staff are super cool and helpful. Don’t sleep on their sandwiches😋.

Wonderful local cafe I've been going to for a while now! I love their carne empanada!
Delicious coffee and great art! Be sure to check out DICTEE gallery next door if they're open!
Good prices, friendly staff. This area severely lacks other cafes, which makes it the default best cafe in the area. Their empanadas are very good 👍🏾
Coffee was great, but the workers seemed miserable to be there on a Saturday. I still tipped.
Silly me, yes, I saw the word dog in the name but Lazy dog has dog in it’s name, but it’s not full of dogs 🤣, the coffee was great. Service is great, the plants are just gorgeous, I’ll come back during the week great building structure, right smack in the middle of residential area
black lychee tea 4/5 , good flavor mushroom empanadas 3/5, highkey should be half the price they are for the quality + flavor
Love this place! People here are extremely friendly, the inside has a good amount of local art, and plenty of seating. The drinks are yummy and the food is good. Seating / Outlets: There's less seating inside but there's still a lot of spots set up along the bar and the walls. A bunch of outlets in there as well. In the garden area, there's more seats in the open area as well as a shaded narrow spot toward the back that has some curtains at the end (this is where the outlets are outside). The narrow area has seats on high chairs next to a long table on the green wall as well as tables and seats on the opposite side. WiFi: My partner said WiFi here was pretty bad, a bunch of sites were apparently blocked like hotmail and Outlook. So if you work from home, maybe this is something to look out for! Drinks / Food: So the horchata latte was a bit too sweet for me but the latte art was beautiful and I enjoyed the flavor a lot. I think I'd just ask for less sugar the next time. I loved the espresso tonic a lot. As for food, the empanada was yummy (mushrooms are my fave and this was plentiful) but I didn't care for the sauce. The pastry was also pretty good, but not as flavorful as I expected. Still loved the crunch of the bread around it though. I definitely want to try more food here. So far I prefer drinks the most. But if I want a quick bite, prices were pretty reasonable to me and I'd easily buy them again! Overall: I mainly go to coffee shops to read for an hour or two. The coffee is good, the space is beautiful, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the service is great. A local spot worth supporting.
Great spot. Coffee drinks are excellent and the baristas are friendly in a genuine way. I wish there was a bit more seating inside for work sessions but there is plenty outside if the weather abides. Overall one of my go-to spots for good drinks and a good book.
This cafe is about a 6 minute walk from my apartment yet I've never actually tried their coffee until today. The atmosphere is chill and it has a modern welcoming feeling to it. They also have an outdoor area for sitting and enjoying your meal. I only wish that they served pour over coffee 😔.

Niche cafe between the Oakland hills and more derelict areas of Oakland in a regular neighborhood. It's great to see a neat neighborhood cafe like this, better than *$ and it has a backyard for outdoor seating. The ☕ was ok but not great and I didn't like the music, but a clean and vibrant hangout that you wouldn't expect to find. So kudos to the folks at Xochi the Dog cafe.
Really disappointed given the high reviews. The cafe vibe and dogs themselves were great, the horchata latte was really not, especially for the price. Tasted a bit smoky and gritty, like a powder was dumped in and not dissolved, and not at all like horchata. Really wanted to like the place :/
The cafe is cute, with a tiny outdoor space. It was too intimate for my liking, but it was still adorable. I can't review the food because I couldn't order. There was signage that no dogs were allowed inside, but no one took orders from the outdoor space, so I had to leave since I didn't want to leave my small dog unattended. Putting QR code menus on the tables can quickly solve this problem.
Tldr; It's okay. Don't be mistaken by the majority of these reviews, this place isn't necessarily "dog friendly." Is there patio seating where you can have your dog with you? Yes. Are dogs allowed inside? No. Additionally the cafe states that their name comes from a family tradition, not because they aimed for a dog-forward establishment. That being said my dog and I had seats in the small enclosed patio area. I can't say I fully enjoyed my experience here, staff was a mixed bag. The person taking my order was very rude and uninterested in answering my questions. The barista that day on the other hand was great, good energy, and didn't make me feel bad for asking a few questions about the drinks and empanadas. I'm not someone who expects staff to be vibrant or happy at their jobs, but I also don't expect them to ruin someone else's day because they have a poor attitude. Overall after the encounter I found myself not enjoying my time outside, I was mostly on edge and wanting to simply leave. Nothing about the place really screams "cozy" to stick around for long after you finish your drink. The Horchata latte was good and the mushroom empanada was delicious, both are small portion wise so I would say the empanadas are overpriced for the size.
Xochi is a pretty dope place to chill, get some work done, and catch up with friends and family. The only issue I’ve had is on the 12th I grabbed a bite to eat with a coworker, and when I entered the bathroom I was disappointed. There was no toilet paper, floor was sticky and the toilet was very dirty. I had to step out and grab my own personal toilet paper just to use the bathroom. Before using it, I used some of their cleaner to clean the toilet bowl and under the toilet seat. My coworker brought it to an employee’s attention, and he seemed bothered because he was asked to deal with the restroom. I will still continue to attend Xochi, but I really hope I don’t experience that again.
loved the staff and the vibe of the place but the iced matcha i got was gross. it was sour? not sure if it was the almond milk or what but it didn’t taste like matcha.
I feel my own expectations were at fault here for the 'Dog Cafe' aspect as I missed a comma in the title and it seems to be named after Xochi the Dog. Dogs are allowed in and abundant there's just nothing for the doggies except a jar of treats by the door and a bowl of water outside. The toast with jam is delicious and the tea was very good. Not too many options but for what it was it was nice! The staff were relaxed and matched my energy well which I also thought was very nice! Atmosphere was alright I did miss their courtyard so if you go check that part out because I didn't. Overall it was nice I would just love more menu items for people and doggies 😊
loved the staff and the vibe of the place but the iced matcha i got was gross. it was sour? not sure if it was the almond milk or what but it didn’t taste like matcha.
I feel my own expectations were at fault here for the 'Dog Cafe' aspect as I missed a comma in the title and it seems to be named after Xochi the Dog. Croissants were good, drip coffee was great and the atmosphere is chill. Prices however worse than a Starbucks or anything like that. Go once but not sure if it's worth coming back...

Waited 20 minutes for a cappuccino and microwaveable empanada…customers that had ordered after me got their orders before me. Then they tried to give me a coffee that had been sitting there for a different customer for over 10 minutes. Requested a fresh one be made. Then asked them to bring it to my table since I had been waiting for over 20 minutes. A female worker stated that they would call it out and I could come get it, with attitude. Though other customers were having their orders brought to them. As far as the coffee, they gave me a new one, maybe. It was like warm so I doubt it was remade. Pollo Empanada was good. Only good thing about the experience.
tl;dr: coffee good, service bad the coffee was good but the employees are hella rude. if i'm sitting outside, don't hear my name called and go inside to get my drinks and there are 2 drinks next to a post it w my name on it (both being drinks that i ordered), im gonna take both. so instead of saying "are you anna?!" and snarkily smiling/smirking while saying it, why not put out both my drinks at the same time?? and then my partner walks in to grab the second drink and a different person said "are you ash?!" you could be like "that's for ana. that's for ash". but instead they give hella attitude. like yall need to chill. it's not that serious. i worked at a coffee shop before too so i know how annoying customers can be but this was tew much the other customers there were nice though with their cute dogs. if you grab a drink here don't even try to be polite toh. and stay inside so they won't be rude to you if you don't hear your name called and try to grab a drink that literally looks like yours and is next to a post it w your name on it
Staff don't say welcome in upon arrival, but instead say you cant have your dog in here (Fair). Menu is limited and bland. Fancy grilled cheese had almost no cheese on it. More of a buttery sourdough with some really cheap ham. Back patio could use some organization. I don't really get why dog cafe is in the name other than there must be a limit of dog friendly cafes in Oakland. A wasted Saturday morning spot. Womp womp for us.
Staff likes to ignore customers (depending on how you look?) and serves cold coffee (not sure how they managed that). You deserve better.

The people working here are just simply mean to put it plain. They never greet me when I come in and they are always super rude and short with me. Today I came in and 3 girls working went straight into the back without saying anything to me or even acknowledging my existence. I just stood there for a few minutes with no acknowledgement. Then I jingled my keys so the guy making the coffees could provide me some serviceThis isn't the only time this has happened. This happens every single time I come in here. Just mean girls, rude guys, and coffee snobs coming together to gentrify Oakland and be horrible to people who give them business. That was my mistake, just even coming here... I wont be returning. The service and treatment from staff is disgusting and intentionally unkind and they don't deserve to stay in business!
