Opinions de Memelas Doña Vale Oaxaca
After 6 days in Oaxaca, trying all the street/market food, I'm happy to announce - this is what they mean when they call Oaxaca a culinary capital. Finally something worthy of that title. The secret sauce paired with handmade tortillas are truly amazing, unique and delicious 😋 We had 4 memales with meat - 220 pesos
Outstanding Breakfast for Us For The Second Consecutive Year at Doña Vale. We Just Had To Come Back and She and Her Small Staff Did NOT Disappoint. Tried the pork tacos first to change it up but the Mermelas both with Morita Salsa (sauce) and the Tomato Salsa Were Off The Scale Good. The Hot Chocolate with Water is To Die For.
Doña Vale is an absolute Oaxacan street-food treasure! Their memeles are nothing short of phenomenal, each bite delivers rich, earthy flavor with just the right balance of masa, queso, and savory toppings. These traditional Oaxacan treats are elevated to perfection, with house-made dough that’s light yet satisfying and toppings that pop with freshness and authenticity. The setup channels street-food energy with warmth and authenticity, and the team is friendly, welcoming, and passionate about sharing Oaxaca’s culinary heritage. Whether you go for the classic memel with beans and cheese, or try one of their creative specials, each one is crafted with care and bursting with flavor. For a genuine, unforgettable taste of Oaxacan street cuisine, memelas done right! Doña Vale Netflix Street Food is a must-stop. Exceptional quality and flavor in every bite!
Epic. Truly. Some places are overrated. This place is about tradition and consistency. The most incredible experience! Especially having the queen, Dona Vale herself sit and have breakfast at our table. A truly unforgettable experience. On top we ran into @mario.come.oaxaca for breakfast. Magical.
Memelas Doña Vale lives up to its reputation with absolutely delicious memelas at an incredible value. The flavors are authentic, and it’s no surprise this spot is so popular. There was a long line when I went on the weekend, but it moved relatively quickly, and the wait was worth it. One thing to note, as others have mentioned, is to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings while you’re there. If you’re in Oaxaca, this is a must-visit spot for a truly local experience!
Featured on a Netflix "Street Food" Episode. This was in an open air market deep in a Oaxacan neighborhood. 20 minute walk from Centro. As usual, this deep I was only gringo I saw the whole time there. My kind of place. 1) Chocolate de Aqua. 2) Memelas with Huevos, Morita sauce & tomato sauce with Habanero & Serranos. * Making of the chocolate water. * Full house with a line waiting.
I was so happy to finally try Doña Vale's famous memelas, ad they were worth the wait: I got one with the salsa morita and egg, and one with the tomate salsa and egg, and both were delicious. There is a little bit of queue to get seated, but the staff is so nice and fast that you will get your seat in no time
Truly one of the greatest food experiences we had in Oaxaca! The market is pretty busy but it’s worth it to make your way through to eat here. We waited for like 10 min for a seat at the counter but well worth it. Go early because they close at noon and you’ll be sad you missed it. I will never forget those memelas in my life.
Prices seem to have gone up slightly, but still reasonable for something famous and good portions. Stall is very clean and service is quick. Salsa Mortia is the bomb, and please add Huevos (egg) to accompany it. We were apprehensive about coming to this market after reading multiple reviews about safety, but glad we did it. As long as you come in the morning, walk in open areas, stay vigilant and don't dress in a flashy manner, all is well.
Memelas Doña Vale is not in central Oaxaca, but it's easy to get here walking. It is located deep inside a market, so you may have to look for it a little bit, but there some signs pointing to it which makes it easy to find. The food is amazing, and there are nice places for sitting and seeing the ladies prepare the memelas. I was most surprised by the tomato sauce, which might be the best I have ever tried. And Phil's special was amazing; the egg was simply perfectly made. Do not miss this when visiting Oaxaca. The place deserves the fame it gets.
What a great experience! We arrived before lunch (highly recommend as we didn't queue at all, but soon after we sat down people had to wait to be served). It was around 10:30ish that we arrived. Doña Vale was there making the food, and really the salsa Morita is delicious. We had the simple memelas (queso y salsa morita). Be warned that it's not super easy to find, but that in itself is an experience. We enjoyed strolling around the huge market looking for her spot. Make sure to buy some chillies at the market too!
I wanted to beat the potential crowd so I came early on a Monday morning. I had three veg-friendly memelas (with and without egg and both sauces – salsa morita y salsa roja), chocolate de agua, and cafe de olla. They were all excellent and I particularly loved the lightness and vibrance of the salsa roja. The Google Maps location will get you to the general area; I entered from the south, after the cellphone case stall I made the first right (northeast) into the heart of the market, walked straight for about 100 feet, made a right at the bathroom sign overhead, Doña Vale's stall comes up just as you turn the right corner. ¡Buen provecho!
My girlfriend and I came here because of the Netflix episode obviously- but my god, that was a delicious experience. I ordered 2, then 2 more, then 2 more, then before leaving I had to get one more. That salsa is the best salsa I've ever had, and my girlfriend said the coffee was the best she's ever had. I tried all the carnes they had, the fried pork was the best, and we also each put an egg on a few of them. I couldn't recommend this place any higher. It was hard to find but Google maps was pretty accurate. If you need to ask someone where it is, it's right near some Sanitarios Públicos that were pink, so that might help. I'm honestly sad I will likely not be able to return, and envious of all the Oaxaqueños who live here and get to visit her whenever they wish.
This was a really lovely place to eat! We had to search through the market on the edge of Oaxaca city to find this gem. We definitely ordered the memelas because we had seen them on a street food documentary on Netflix. They were super lovely with both of the sauces that were available (tomato and the classic darker smoky sauce). We were very surprised by the pork rib which was crispy and succulent, so lovely. You may need to go at a time of day that it won’t be busy but I’m not sure if that time exists! The word is out. She is open from 7 AM to 12 PM to make sure you get there on time.
Came here to say I tried it. These weren’t the best memelas I had but overall good. The tortillas are made fresh and sure tasted like it. The meat was cooked well and the sauce and salsas were good. I like the atmosphere the most of the hustle and bustle of the market. I was the only tourist the day I went say it was nice talking to locals and hearing the opinions about the food and what to order. I think the price is a bit steep for memelas but again, she was featured on Netflix and always has a line of people waiting to try her food.
I recently tried out Memelas Doña Vale's food and it was definitely worth the stop! However, finding the spot inside the swab meet was a little challenging. Despite this, I can understand why the place has gained some hype, especially after being featured on a Netflix special. The food was just OKAY.
Not really sure what the big deal is. Memelas are basically just normal tortillas with a bit of sauce on them. Maybe I am spoiled but I thought the morita sauce was fine; it was good but nothing revelatory. It had a nice smokiness but also a lactic sourness that I honestly did not care for. We didn’t wait very long but even that was probably too long. I enjoyed the squash blossom quesadillas from the stall nearby much more to be honest. The hot chocolate is good though and the price is certainly right.
