Opinions de Agave Maria's Ojai
The food is always first quality and you won't leave hungry. Tracy, the owner prides herself in serving the best Mexican dishes at a reasonable price. This is one place you have to try the next time you are in Ojai, you won't be disappointed!
Agave Maria has consistently good food. We are locals and get curbside service during the pandemic and appreciate the excellent curbside pick-up. Good Margaritas to go, keep it going during these difficult times.
Good Mexican restaurant. Lovely outdoor eating area. Excellent service.
Excellent food, excellent value, great service, excellent atmosphere. What else can i say? Only thing i would say is they should serve breakfast. Their patio would be the optimum place to eat breakfast and take in the sunrise. Other than that, would definitely recommend this gem.
My hubby and I love this place for a quick bite or apps. We have been here a few times and everything we’ve tried has been so delicious! Sopes! Taquitos! Burritos! Albondigas soup! And the Cadillac margarita is my fave!
Absolutely stellar vegan options. They don't disclose it very obviously online, but they are able to substitute almost any ingredient with a vegan version. The tofu specifically was prepared a lot better than even some vegan-only places.
Went with a group of people before the play across the street. It was very pleasant good drinks I got a vegetarian burrito and it was so big, almost look like a football. Lol it was so yummy I had it for lunch the next day as
We were on a road trip and stopped after reading the ratings. The meal and service was great! The clearer was a step ahead on everything and between her and the two servers we spoke to made our first outing post shut down even better. I made the mistake of ordering ceviche and a vegetable tostado with a Pixie margarita so I had too much food and brought the ceviche home. Both were excellent as was my mother's chilli relano. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Great food and drinks. A semi hidden gem in downtown Ojai. Al fresco dinning is a must to enjoy the nice weather with palm tree lines property. Light music plays and ambient sounds of the fountain in the background . Pro tip: the burritos are the bomb. Their known for their margaritas. We had two and were pretty lit.
The Pixie Margarita is wonderful as well as blood orange when in season. Great menu with Gluten free options ,, I love their cheese enchiladas and soft corn shredded beef tacos - they also have tri tip,, spoiled for choice!
Could not be happier that I ate at this place. The burritos tasted like it had the freshest most nutrient dense vegetables ever. I ordered a veggie burrito with added shrimp. Best burrito I've ever had. My pallet likes organic, healthy, fresh vegetables, style of food. If your into the healthy eating lifestyle your going to like this place.
SO delicious, the Chile relleno practically melted in my mouth, and the pick 3 combo plate was big enough to take home leftovers. Positive and friendly staff, can't wait to visit during "normal" times, I imagine the patio gets lively!
We go for the Pixie Margaritas. Not only are they delicious but they can come by the pitcher so you can think to yourself that you've only had one drink. I think the food is pretty good too but I can't be sure because the Margaritas come first.
Great food on a beautiful patio! Traditional Mexican food plus delicious, reasonably priced dishes like salmon and red snapper. Service was liesurely, but we weren't in a hurry. We'll be back
Craved some Mexican food whilst in Ojai so we googled for a Mexican restaurant, found this place and came here at 11:00 am just as they opened. They served nachos with salsa the moment you sat down ( for free ) which was a plus for me in that moment, costumer service was amazing, food was amazing and the place was very cute. I had the tacos and my friend the barbacue salad. It was so interesting to try the moist tres delicias cake ( tradition of Mexico ) so good!
Their Pixie margaritas are yummy!! Be careful though. It's easy to toss them back quickly. I love ordering the Tacos Durados with shredded beef. However, I have eaten here a lot and it's always good. Sitting outside is a really nice experience. The staff is always kind and on top of everything. I love going here.
We sat on the patio for lunch before attending a memorial. Staff warned us that service might be slow because they had recently seated an enormous party, but the service was very fast and also very friendly. The food was delicious, my husband was particularly impressed with the duck quesadilla. The sunny patio with colorful umbrellas and the charming fountain was a relaxing place to eat. Hours later, towards the end of the memorial when my 4year old started wanting to go home, I took him back to Agave Maria's for dessert, to give my husband a little more time with his family. The fountain has fire at night, which my son was delighted by, and the umbrellas were down so we looked at the stars and had cake. It was absolutely lovely, and we made a fun and peaceful memory despite it being a rather difficult day. We live about an hour away but we'll be making excuses to come back.
Consistently excellent food! Staff is friendly and courteous, the food is outstanding. We had sopes, quesadilla, and horchatas and all were amazing. Long time fan of Agave Maria’s, highly recommended! 10/10 Take out order on 11/22/23, food was excellent but they did get my order wrong, a first. Despite ordering refried beans and no rice with my sopes, then confirming it and the order taker repeating it, I got 2 huge servings of rice and no beans. Still highly recommended, service here is top notch and the food is always good. I even ate part of my rice. When I called the restaurant to advise of the error the manager immediately took responsibility and offered to make it right. That’s why I keep coming back.
Let me start by saying that we have been here quite a few times and lately we were able to have the pleasure of being served by Cooper and another day, Vanessa. They were both so accommodating and polite. The day we had Vanessa as our server, we came in with a party of 15. She handled it like a champ! She was so organized, professional and efficient. All the while she kept smiling no matter how busy her section got. The afternoon we came and had Cooper as our server we had a smaller party. He was very personable, funny and organized. He had a full section and never once broke a sweat. The rest of the staff is amazing, but we will be back to see our 2 favorite servers! 💜 The food is also quite delicious. There are a plethora of menu choices and a variety of cocktails. We have been going here for years and always try to taste something new when we come in. All of which has never disappointed.
I'll get to the wonderful meal, but first I have to highly commend the staff for taking good care of my credit card when I left it there by mistake. I didn't realize I was missing the card until the next morning. My server had carefully wrapped it up for me and written my name on the outside of the wrapping. When I went back for it, they weren't open yet, but workers quickly came to my rescue and returned the card ... which was important because I was on my way out of town. As for the food, the house margarita was amazing, made with delicious fresh juices. The quinoa salad was excellent & my server's recommendation to add shrimp was spot on. The flan was locally made & delicious, although I would have preferred it without the added strawberry topping sauce. The sauce was tasty & freshly-made, but I personally prefer flan without a sweet topping. My server was very friendly & attentive, even though I was dining alone, which usually means a smaller tip than she'd get from a bigger table. The prices were reasonable for Ojai, particularly the great house margarita!
Good food, good staff, and a beautiful patio. We had a great time and will definitely go back. I had the Chile Colorado plate. It was a generous serving (lots of leftovers) and perfectly seasoned. The refried beans needed a little salt, but the rice was perfect. An excellent lunch.
Absolutely love this place. My wife and I eat vegan and they gladly let us "customize" our orders without question. The food was delicious with large portions and our server Nohemi was a delight. This restaurant has a cheerful and charming patio (with heat lamps as needed) and is fast becoming our favorite place in town. Also the owner, Tracy, is super nice and makes you feel very welcome.
5 stars for the food, great proportion and equal flavor! I am not a big fan of margaritas but I was glad to try one here, I recommend them. The service was good but not great, when they where at our table they mad us feel at home but either they where short staffed or the special circumstances that the pandemic has brought could've been why service was slow to follow up.
Really liked the cheese enchiladas and the shrimp tostada. Nice outdoor seating. Friendly staff. Big portions. Good chips. If you like it really hot, ask for some of their extra hot salsa & mix a few spoons of it into the reg salsa- YUM. Really tasty food!!
There'd be pics but it was devoured too quickly 😆 Delicious margaritas, tritip, enchiladas, tacos, rellenos and sides! Fresh salsa and chips, fast service even when short staffed. AC inside is a must for these hot days 🌞 Drop on in, you'll be glad you did! 🍽
I had the Chile Verde and it was DE-LI-CIOUS!!! My hubby had the chicken mole and he loved it too!! Usually he doesn't like the moles because his palate tastes it too sweet, but he said this one was just right; spicy and a little tangy sweet. Yum! Very nice ambiance. Highly recommend! Thank you Agave Maria's for a wonderful Sunday afternoon ☺️
Beautiful atmosphere, kind and attentive staff, and wonderful, big portioned food with excellent prices. I have absolutely no complaints, just praise. I would definitely recommend it.
We love going to Agave. Every time we go Jeff at the bar, Naomi, and the whole staff makes us feel like family. The food is always fresh and the pixie margarita is delicious!
Miss the one in Camarillo and when visiting Ojai we had to visit. The Asada is the best around and the tostada salad was great as well. Good margaritas and a decent value overall.
I usually only write reviews when either the food is exceptionally bad or when it’s exceptionally good. This place is the latter. Loved the atmosphere sitting outside in the warm winter sun. Great food, good service.
Delicious Mexican food with great attentive service. We ordered meals and appetizers and all the food was delicious. The weather was nice so we took advantage of the outside seating, but plenty is available indoor as well.
We came here for lunch on our day trip to Ojai. I'm glad we did. I loved the atmosphere of the place. The patio outside is very spacious and pleasant. I'd always any to sit there if it's nice out, which of usually is there. The service was quick and the guys war delicious. I had the Tostada which was great but both the plates we had were big and filling. We'll definitely be back!
I absolutely loved Agave Maria's. The food had fantastic flavor and we had good service. I recommend the Pixie margarita as well. The enchilada was was some of the best I've had and the Chile relleno was done perfectly. I think prices fair and I would definitely recommend this place. It's a little hard to find as it's tucked BEHIND the The Nest.
My daughter and I had a late lunch. The service was great and the food was delicious. She had the Chili relleno plate and I had the Latin Shrimp plate. First time for me to have a curry tasting dish. Loved it! It was pretty busy, but they were on top of their game. Decor was typical Spanish but comfortable.
I can't tell you how long I've been coming to this particular restaurant. Since before It was called Agave Maria's, in The Times when songstresses would get on the balcony across the street at the play house and sing to us, when it was called Tony's. Long ago, when they used to have jazz on weekends and the strawberry margaritas were enough to drive all the way from camaro. I can tell you with complete honesty and over 10 years of coming to this particular location that the wet burritos with red and green sauce are 100% the best burritos in at least a 75 mile radius. Great job guys
Very good food, excellent service & great margs. We will be back!
Hands-down, best meal I’ve had in Ojai and I’ve been here many times I had just never been to Agave Maria’s There are coconut. Shrimp is delicious.
Great for lunch or dinner. Authentic Mexican food
A little pricey though very delicious. Lots of nice scenery around and beautiful trees. When we ate, a small band played Hispanic music which was also very good and enjoyable. -LeikaPluto on YouTube for more videos.
Excellent food, atmosphere and the best margaritas ever - made with local tangerines. We had wet burritos and they might have been the best we've ever had - carnitas and veggie. Don't miss out on this Ojai gem!

Food was great and service to match! Topped off a great visit to Ojai

Good atmosphere, friendly staff, food was pretty good and their margaritas were delicious. Dog friendly on the patio. Would definitely go back.
The food was stellar and the staff were all friendly and made me and my family feel welcomed. The atmosphere of the outdoor patio seating was also nice. Would recommend any lovers of Mexican cuisine visiting the ojai valley

Rib eye was delicious!!!!! I'll be back again for it. Service started off great but took forever when it came time to get our check over 30 minutes of sitting and waiting. Other then that food was really good.
When we arrived, patio was not that busy and only one server Samantha, friendly and brought us everything we asked for after asking 2 times for each item. I ordered 2 tacos without onions. Both arrived WITH onions and no tomatoes, asked to have them remade correctly. Menu stated carnitas tacos were $5, but I was charged $5.25; had bill corrected. Usually everything is correct.
Hit this place with my brother after playing 18 at Seoul Park. The food was good. I got a wet burrito and my brother ordered some trio they offered. It looked really good. Service was excellent and the price was fair
Delicious! Great patio dinning...relaxing and good service. I had two enchiladas... a chicken enchilada and a fresh veggie enchilada with Verde sauce served with black beans and rice...Very yummy! The kids plates were very nice....they ate everything.
Always a nice place to get some Mexican food!
Been here a few times over the past few years and the food is always good. The employees are friendly and helpful. Strike up a conversation, they won't mind. The place feels a little trendy but cozy. The only thing I don't like, but many of you may is they allow people to bring a dog in.
Everything and everyone are wonderful! It's just too hot. There is no air conditioning, and it's too hot to eat food outside when it's 98°. The drinks are warm after 5 min of being on the table. The ice melted upon contact with the outside. The staff is super sweet and the food is really good.
The food selection, flavor, and atmosphere is consistently superb. However, the service is hit or miss dependant on the individual server. During my most recent visit, which was approximately once every 6 months, the server was void of charisma and enthusiasm, which ultimately led to a diminished experience. And, as we all know, a dining experience is everything! I highly recommend this restaurant for its authentic flavored cuisine, and hopefully, you are received by an ambitious or enthusiastic server during your visit because the ambiance and flavors of this restaurant are fantastic. Cheers.
I was in the area and decided to stop at Agave Maria for an early dinner. They have a large patio and it was quite warm out but the patio felt nice as there are many umbrellas for shade. We tried the guacamole and chips which were good. The guacamole definitely has a strong lime flavor but it was tasty. They give you a generous portion of salsa and chips upon arrival as well. The chips were nice and fresh and crispy. The service was quick and the food came out right away and was hot and fresh. We had the chicken mole which was very good. I wasn’t fond of the rice as it was a little flavorless for my liking. We also had the queso Birria tacos which were very good along with the consommé. I thought it was a bit pricey but they definitely give you nice portion sizes. The wait staff was very friendly.
Just a good lil pocket 90% exterior with strong drinks , had the quesadilla , was great came with great guac crème fraise an shredded chicke
Pretty good tacos... I'd probably return for more.
The small town Ojai closed pretty early. We stumble on this Mexican restaurant. Thy are running business late . Large patio with sunbathe . Staff are pretty friendly and the plate size is quite big . Ambience is pretty chill if you are looking for the get away .
Cute Mexican place in ojai. I had two tacos with rice and black beans. The servers were friendly, good atmosphere, and food was delicious!

This was my first time and we had a big group. The staff took such good care of us. The food was really good and very fresh!! If you're in Ojai, I highly recommend!
Good food. Got fish tacos but it was chopped up fish which made it harder to eat. Lots of flies. No complementary chips and salsa. Service was slow. All together good eats and flavorful but could have been better.

My meal was pretty good. I tasted my wife's chili relleno and it was very good. 4 of us having dinner, 3 dinners came, mine came about 5 minutes later. They weren't that busy.
Cleanliness is not on the menu...in fact the menus are smeared with food, fresh and not so fresh, and browned around the edges with grime. Doors are filthy, clearly almost never wiped down. Food is ok. Nothing to write home about. But I do have to wonder about the cleanliness of that kitchen...
Food was excellent but I needed more says he and tortillas. Took more than 10 minutes to see our server and then we were charged $2. For 3 little tortillas and .50 cents for chili Verde sauce.
Not a good service! Waiters are too busy running back and forth leaving you hanging and waiting. I ordered a drink and they never asked me "would you like one more". I ordered extra salsa and the waiter never came back.
Updated review: the food and margaritas are still amazing. We had a huge group here for my dad's birthday. The food came out quick! But there was a new policy with large groups and that you cannot pay per small group or individuals. It got very confusing. I felt bad for our server Andrea who worked very hard and had to deal with all of us figuring out our bills.
Best margarita and bloody mary we have ever had, kudos to the bar...but everything was downhill from there. We had just ordered a bean pot with chips and salsa...it took forever to get it. It tasted fine and the food probably is pretty darn good, but I will never know. They were obviously having issues with the electrical because the power kept going in and out and they were having problems in the kitchen because they were struggling to get food out. We gave up and left after waiting in line to use the bathroom. Huge restaurant... only 2 one-stallers, one of them is shared between m/w. The bartender and staff were nice. Just not sure what was going on there.
The food has really gone downhill and we will not be returning anytime soon. It used to be so fresh and delicious but we were really disappointed today. Ceviche was good but the chicken was undercooked and dry… inedible. Ribs were no good either. The service was still friendly and fast, and they have a great patio but ugh, what a shame!
Excellent ambiance, outdoor patio dining that welcomes our canine family members. Great salsa and chips. Everything else, including the margaritas and guacamole, is mediocre. They messed up one dish in our order and left my son, the hungriest member of our party, to suffer through watching us eat... which turned into him sharing our dishes. Came out 10 minutes after we finished and he was no longer hungry and didn't eat it. If anyone had bothered to ask we would have cancelled the do-over. No offer to comp the screw up, we paid for their mistake. Don't come here expecting a good meal or attentive service and you can enjoy the experience.
Love this location and I know everyone there works their butts off. Encountered bad service and so did our friends who came later that night. One in our group didn't get food and had to track down the server a few times. Our friends who came later were served other guest's orders. They got the wrong food. My next review will show whether improvements were made. That remains to be seen. It's still a solid in Ojai for Mexican food.
In this day and age you would think a well established restaurant like this one would better (authentic) salsa choices. My food would have been so much better with a spicy Tomatillo salsa not a gringo tomatoe sauce.
We order delivery from here pretty regularly and also visit in person. Twice I’ve ordered fajitas for delivery, and once for pickup, with no tortillas included. Also, I called and the guy who answered didn’t apologize, tried to blame the delivery driver, asked me to hold and hung up on me. When I called back, he was just like “so what do you want?” Umm, for you all to start packing your takeaway orders with care and take responsibility when you fail to do so? The service in person has always been decent, but the guy doing takeaway orders could be more thoughtful and have a nicer demeanor when speaking to customers about his mistakes. I will say they have the best chips and salsa, and the veggie quesadilla is great. The fajitas have too much juice in them, but otherwise are solid IF yoh actually are given tortillas.
I wish I could give this place more stars as the food was excellent and it's a cool little spot, but our service was terrible when we went. Our server could barely be bothered with us, and when she did come by, she couldn't wait to get away from the table, which seemed to be a common theme with the the entire staff. I might have understood if it was a slow night, but we were one of two tables at the time. Overall worth a trip, but if you're going to dine in, expect lackluster service.
The service and atmosphere was great, but I have had better Mexican food. Everyone at my table loved it, so I may have chosen the wrong items. I had 2 beef hard tacos , black beans and rice. I was underwhelmed.
They seemed overwhelmed when we were there. The waitstaff wasn't keeping up and the food was extremely mediocre (at best). Tacos aren't hard, but theirs were pretty bad.

The food is very good. But the service has been terrible the last few times we’ve been. Not only was the server super slow and never really checked with us to see how we were doing but the gentleman that seemed to be the manager was more interested in playing on his phone than helping customers. I had to walk up to the bar after 10 minutes of waiting in order to pay our bill and had it not been for the busboy who seemed to be the only person actually working to serve the customers we probably would have never got out of there. Don’t think this local will be back again. Sad because it used to be a really great restaurant.
Skinny margaritas are a $3 upcharge even though they should have fewer ingredients. Also, they tasted like a mix rather than fresh lime juice. A bowl of queso/chips and two margaritas was >$50 + tip. Not great and unreasonably priced.
The margaritas are tasty and the environment is welcoming and colorful. The food is consistently bland -- the pico is flavorless, the chips are commercial, the guac is pasty, and the fajitas are soupy and taste of ketchup. I've given it three tries but now won't return.
Staff was friendly, patio is peaceful, service was quick but not authentic or good food. Salsa tasted like canned tomatoes doctored up, and re-fried beans tasted burnt. Underwhelming experience for as much as we’d heard about the place.
I think they were having an off night, but when I went the service wasn't particularly good, the food was cool and the margaritas were watered down. Looking at the other reviews, I feel like it was an anomalous trip, so I'll need to try them again to confirm. However, until then, I would have a hard time recommending them to people.
Someone recommended this place so we tried it. It was during happy hour but the waitress wasn’t sure what it included. No menu for happy hour. The nachos were terrible and the house margarita was lime lemon juice at best.
Visited on a moderately busy night, had to prompt the host to take down our names again. Were seated at a table with no waitress until we asked for water (twice). Servers were friendly but not very empathetic about the service. I got a steak burrito which was completely unremarkable and bland, except for the sauce and cheese on top. The patio was very nice atmosphere. Overall this place has potential but they should work on their service.
Our experience was not that great. This is the list of things we didn't like. 1. Even though the menu said Happy Hour was 4-6pm we were told there was none. 2. All our food came all at once: appetizer and entree included 3. The Colorado tricut was TOO salty. We ended up eating less than half of it. On 2nd thought we should have returned it right away. 4. The utensils were not adapted to the pork chop we ordered. We had a hard time cutting the meat. 5. The table was not cleared to make room for our dishes. Empty Chips and salsa containers remained throughout our meal clogging the table. 6. Barcode label was on the lemon garnish that came with our drinks. In conclusion, many details were missed making our experience not enjoyable. We visited the restaurant on 2022-03-16.
The service was terrible. We were charged for things we did not purchase, also my friends received their dinner way before we got ours. I asked for another margarita, and the waitress brought back the original glass from my first margarita with no ice or salt. Also, I had asked for refried beans with my combination plate, and they brought me black beans. Then I asked for refried beans on the side, which were running with lard.
So upset. These guys ruined our New Year’s Eve, we booked a table for 11 people for 7.30pm NYE 4 days in advance, on NYE at around 1pm i called to reconfirm, they asked if we could come at 7pm, i said yes, all good. At 4pm on NYE the restaurant called us to say they were closing the restaurant at 6pm...so basically cancelled our NYE table with no notice making it impossible for us (11 people) to find an alternative on one of the busiest nights of the year....not only are very unreliable BUT they only apologized when we pushed them to. They had zero empathy or responsibility for what they’d done. So i have no idea if the food is good or not but their treatment of prospective customers is utterly disrespectful and hurtful.
Came here with my girlfriend and honestly was disappointed, never again. We got the tamales, and Cesar salad and some drinks. Drinks were ok. The salad was super dry and the tamales were heated in the microwave and so was the chicken that we got on the side for the salad both the salad and the tamales were inedible. The only thing we were picking at was the croutons. This place is mismanaged and the cooks must not know how to run the kitchen. Never again definitely not worth $58
Terrible experience. Food is American - Mexican. Not really Mexican. We asked for veggie tacos and were served chicken tacos. Fine - we ate them anyways to not waste food. When I told the waitress, I didn’t even get a “I’m sorry”, she just checked if the price was the same…. Find another accommodation if hungry.
My wife and I were seated, then sat there for 20+ minutes in the 90° heat with nobody even taking our drink order. The waitress looked right at us, then passed by on several occasions. Finally we had enough and left. This is my third trip to this restaurant and while the service and food have been suspect previously, I reluctantly went today. I won't be back and will not be recommending the restaurant to friends or family.
