Peppers 🌶 Mexicale Cafe is located in Pacific Grove, California. This was my first time visiting. Nice selection of menu items, appetizers, entrees 🌮🫔🌯, drinks 🍸 🍺🍷🧋 etc. Original Mexican food 😋 and large portions 👍 The burritos 🌯 are huge. Very friendly, courteous and helpful staff 👍 They have a full bar, with counter seating 💺 😀 I recommend them 👍, but come hungry 😉

Love this place! Recently moved to PG and decided to give this place a try. The staff was so friendly and welcoming and the service was quick. Don’t expect authentic Mexican food, but everything was yummy and fresh. Portions were very generous as well. Will definitely be coming back.

Definitely a surprise, laid-back vibes, great prices for the large portions. Most of us couldn't finish our dishes, which says a lot about the portions. Everything felt fresh, with great flavors and great service. Best of all, they had a solid selection of vegetarian options.

Lovely evening here thanks to our server Fiona. Thanks for your patience, recommendations and conversation. The complementary chips are light, crisp , and served with just the right heat green and red salsas. The blood orange margarita was delicious.. Fiona recommended the red pepper snapper which was good but slightly fishy tasting for our palate..The fresh slices of jicama and pico were favs. The shredded beef enchilada with refried beans and rice was yummy. The chicken tamales were okay, thickly rolled and not much flavor. Overall, we like this place and recommend it.

Clean, bright and spacious with outside seating. Grilled prawns was delicious and perfectly cooked! Margarita drink was great! 😊 We've been coming here occasionally in the past 35 years since we don't live in the area. Will definitely come back again.

Genuine & Authentic - and that applies to the food and the wait staff. This is my 2nd visit to the Monterey area in 3 weeks, and all I’ve done in between was talk about Peppers! Juan was our waiter both times - 1st time by chance, 2nd time by request. Since most fantastic restaurants aren’t self-serve, the experience I have with my wait staff can make or break my dining experience, regardless of how fantastic the food is. Juan was genuinely friendly. He made it feel as if you were dining at his house. Juan made Peppers perfect. -Speaking of perfection - the food was fantastic. It was nice to see tourists and locals all enjoying the incredible food here. Juan had suggested some off menu tacos, when I told him I used to perform in Mexico - Tacos al Carbon. Simple grilled, uber tender strips of marinated beef served with tortillas, rice, whole beans, salsa. Like Pavlov’s dog I’m drooling typing this. This tasted like my memories. The margaritas from their full bar knocked it out of the park for me. Chips come to the table thin, fresh and warm. Red and green salsas are yum. -I highly recommend Peppers. It’s worth the short drive if staying Monterey.

Got the beef enchiladas and tamales! Got the Cosmo and blood orange margarita which were very good and also strong. Also got the Mexican Chocolate Cake, which was amazing, but be aware that it's not like a "regular" chocolate cake. The food was soooo good, my only complaint is that it was gone too fast 😭

Had a great lunch here. Food portions quite large. Huge menu. Outdoor patio fine, ambience nothing special. Service great. Margaritas should be served in larger glass for the price.

C

Had lunch there on a random Friday. The owner was super friendly and her family too. The food was delicious and atmosphere warm and welcoming. I felt like a local even being from 20 minutes away in Salinas. I highly recommend Peppers if you are a local or just visiting PG.

Such a great place to take family and friends visiting from out of town, or just to pop in on a week night with the kids. I always get the avocado chicken -- so good! The atmosphere is cozy and the chips and salsa always on point. We lived in PG for 5 years and this was always a fave.

We found this place by luck. It was surprisingly very busy on a Thursday evening. We sat out side and were very pleased. They had propane heaters on which kept iy very comfortable. The food was delicious and price was very fair. It was very busy so I will give the wait staff a break.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in PG! Their prawn fajitas and fresh guacamole are quite possibly the best I have had in the states. Fun vibe, great space and outdoor seating, lots of options and friendly service! Love this place!

One of our favorite meals during our visit to Pacific Grove area. I had a combo with a beef enchilada and chicken burrito and my husband had a different enchilada dish. The enchiladas were delish, along with the margarita I ordered. We called ahead and put our name on the wait list.

Peppers is my favorite restaurant! The food is amazing and they make everything fresh, so orders can be customized, if needed. Most of the staff have been there for years and they have the best teamwork I've ever witnessed, in a restaurant or otherwise.

Came here with the party of seven after visiting the Monterey Bay aquarium. It's right across the street from the PG natural History museum as well. They take reservations, and we had a wonderful time here after a busy day of sightseeing. Seemed less crowded than the Cannery Row area.

This place really hit the spot. They were fast and the food was amazing. Even my kids were happy.

Came here on a Monday evening. Ordered food to go at about 5pm. The hostess took my order and was very friendly and professional. It was very good service. I ordered the nachos. It took less than 10 minutes for them to be ready. They were delicious. Very good and large portion. The menu doesn't list what comes on them. They come with a lot of melted cheddar cheese, sour cream, guacamole, diced tomatoes, red onions, olives and pickled jalapenos. You also get additional chips and salsa on the side. I recommend that you have plenty of napkins because they can get a little messy while you eat them. I look forward to coming back and eating on their patio.

We recently traveled to Pacific Grove and stayed for five days. While we were there, we ate at several restaurants and liked most of them. But the only one we went to more than once was Peppers Mexicali Cafe on Forest Ave. With so many great dining choices available in town, you may ask: why Peppers? Well, we'll tell you why: Peppers has, BY FAR, the best Mexican food we have ever tasted. The food is very fresh and flavorful (the beef fajitas are out of this world!). The service we received from Ryan and Fiona was excellent, as they were both very attentive and friendly. It was also evident that a lot of people feel the same as us since the restaurant and bar were always full of diners and people waiting for tables. Over the years, we have always planned most of our vacations in coastal California towns (Coronado, La Jolla, Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and now Pacific Grove). And in each of these towns, we have always found a favorite restaurant that we make sure we dine at whenever we're there. In Pacific Grove, that restaurant is Peppers Mexicali Cafe. Ron and Diane Weber Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Best Mexicali food on the peninsula, hands down!!! And one of my favorite Chili Rellenos EVER! So sooo good. I'll definitely take some pictures next time we go.

Normally don't post reviews, but was inspired by a contrasting experience with "the Grill at Point Pinos". Excellent. Excellent food, staff, etc. Former manager (and waiter, cook, dishwasher, etc.) of a Mexican restaurant and an avid home cook and lover of Mexican cuisine. Food was excellent across the board (great Chile Verde!) VERY well-trained attentive staff ("more chips?" answering questions, borrowing a piece of paper with a joke, checking on our experience, etc.) (and on leaving, two busboys, a waitress, a hostess, and a bartender---all in passing---all thanked us for coming and wished us a good evening---that's impressive staff training!) Fun atmosphere and decor, PACKED, but accommodating. Great food, (and drinks!) especially for the price! I can understand why it was packed! Closest thing I can get to a negative is I dislike it when restaurants place a taco on a mixed plate in a way that a sauce softens the crisp taco shell----but it's a common practice I know. We'll definitely be back!

The food is very good, but the skirt steak is incredible. There are a few different items on the menu that include it. So tender and excellent meaty flavor. The red salsa with the chips is bussing as well. Chuy is a very nice server.

Wow! If this review would allow me to give 6 stars or more, I would. The owner, Lisa, was so personal and hospitable that I felt like a star in Hollywood. The food was exceptional and the drinks were nothing short of excellent. I truly recommend Peppers Mexicali Cafe if you’re looking for great food, great drinks and most of all…family friendly service. Thank you Lisa!!!

Visiting The area for the first time. Peppers was a 6 minute walk from our B&B. Easy to get to after a long travel day. We didn’t have reservations but we got two seats at the bar. I had the Seafood Paella and spouse had the Grilled Prongs. Both were outstanding. They did mix up and bring Garlic Prawns at first but quickly made a switch and comped us our drinks. They have an broad menu and the Margaritas are excellent.

They brought me a Cadillac margarita with the ice in w separate glass, and for the first time ever I actually tasted the tequila in the Cadillac margarita. It has me buzzing immediately. It was so good, but I simply couldn't order a 2nd one because I didn't have a designated driver...yep, it was that good.😊 And both the Chile Relleno and burrito in the combo were outstanding, great portion sizes for the price. Servers were attentive and checked with me regularly, and this is the best time to get a table and some attention, just before the dinner rush. Peppers is a hidden gem I've been coming to for several years now, it is a must if you're visiting the Monterey Peninsula and are yearning for quality Mexican food and drinks. You will NOT be disappointed -- they are outstanding. Can't wait to come back...

We chose to eat in their outdoor dining area. It’s a large space with propane and electric heaters. There is a plethora of thriving succulent plants adding to the atmosphere. The food was delicious. We will definitely dine here again soon.

P

We enjoyed a nice family dinner with a friend, the service was really good, the food was tasty and plentiful but the star of the evening was the chocolate cake with ice cream, they also have a full bar, the menu has different options depending on what you like or what you can eat and they can accommodate your requests, this is a small restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere and quite popular with the locals and tourists alike.

This is the place you cannot miss in PG or on your trip to Monterey. No - it’s not your baize seafood restaurant. It’s where every local goes. I should know. I never go back home without stopping here and you MUST MUST have the smoked Gouda quesadilla- nothing else compares!

I honestly came here as a last option, since we were in a hurry and all other other places were much more expensive or closed. But I was very impressed! The food was so delicious and the service was very fast. Not to mention that it was very reasonably priced.

One of the best authentic Mexicali restaurants in Monterey! The service was excellent (Juan) was super friendly, helpful, checked on us at the right times. Food came out fast, hot and soooo Yummy! My go to order is the two item combo with a chicken taco and a beef enchilada. The fluffy crispy taco shell is very delicious and the freshest ingredients of Lettuce tomato cheese balance it out. Did I mention how fresh everything is? Also the chips were really good and they give you a red and green salsa that was also delicious Peppers has a really expensive tequila bar selection my wife had the blood orange margarita which was really great and I had the ultimate margarita which is pretty fantastic You don’t get the view like El Torritos. But it’s very charming place, fun, Excellent service and food One of my top choices every time I’m in Monterey / Pacific Grove

"*UPDATE, It was so good I went again, see photos!* Prawn appetizer and beef fajitas Why did I not take a photo of my amazing food?? Because we dove right in as soon as it landed on the table, sorry! 😅 I've been there twice now, both times got the fajitas. They are AMAZING. we always get an extra order or their obviously homemade flour tortillas as well. The quality of the meat and veggies is top notch, so fresh. Cooked and seasoned perfectly! Looking forward to trying many other items as well. Next on my list is their grilled prawns...a lady next to us got them and they look fantastic! Don't think twice about coming here, you'll love it. Great food, great service with both indoor and patio dining available. Enjoy!

This place never disappoints - I used to eat here all time but haven’t been in a long time . It is wonderful to see that the flavors haven’t changed . You can feel the freshness at every bite . I highly recommend their artichoke enchiladas and grilled steak crisy taco combo - extremely friendly owner and staff - thank you Peppers

Peppers is a great place to grab a quick lunch or dinner. Small groups or large they can handle your party. Chips and salsa are tasty (two different salsas are provided), drinks are fresh and well made, and food is terrific. Portions are generous and the location is perfect, just off the Main Street. A local favorite for sure.

C

As usual, my wife and I turned up at the busiest period with no booking. The place was packed to the gills. Asked for a table and told it would be a 20minute wait. Browsed the menu while seated at the bench and watched the locals enjoying themselves. Shown to the table which we were delighted with and quickly ordered our meals. We both had the combo meals and a cocktails. Served some chips and salsa while we weee eating. Finished up with desert of something called Pupusette ?? Everything was absolutely delicious. Including the drinks. The desert was massive. The server advised that our choice was big and suggested we share rather than order a desert each. Wise words. Left the restaurant with a full belly and many happy memories

This was our first time here as suggested from a friend. We have been going to every Mexican restaurant in the area as time allows (and Covid permits). Happy to say Peppers #1) has excellent food and 2) has wonderful staff. I had a cheese enchilada w/red sauce and beef burrito. Very good and plenty of food (I was able to finish my plate). CHP's & salsa (law enforcement joke) were OK but not great. Top shelf margarita was excellent. Pricing was fair in this generally overpriced economy we live in. Parking at 4:30 on a Friday was easy but the place was filling up FAST! I definitely recommend Peppers and we will be going back many times.

Super enchiladas! This was so good. The beer in restaurants in 2021 is often a year old keg that is stale. Not here, fresh IPA on tap. So good!

Had an great experience here. Service was fast and friendly. Beef fajitas were awesome, and differs from many other places in that the beef and onions were not dripping with oil and still really tasty. My partner had the chicken tamale and loved it too. I ordered the Ultimate Margarita, which tasted really good and had a hefty kick. Highly recommend!

Such a fun spot! I came here with friends to celebrate our birthdays, and it was the perfect choice. The food was delicious. We ordered the 2 enchilada mole plate and the tacos al carbon. The mole was a red sauce mole and had a ton of cheese on it. Although it wasn't quite a mole it was very tasty. The tacos al carbon were so good. Had a nice grilled char on the meat with a really good marinade. We sat outside where it was nice and cool and our waiter was super friendly and gracious. Highly recommend!

There is usually a wait for dinner so make reservations. Chips and salsa were great and when I told the waiter of my jalapeño allergy he brought me some salsa I could eat. Beef fajitas were really well flavored but don't expect a sizzling plate. Veggies were good but not grilled so they're a bit different. Our tortillas were homemade and excellent. Hubs had mole enchiladas were a tad sweet but good. Chile Verde was on the mild side.

The staff made the experience even better with their friendly service. A great place to relax, enjoy good food, and make a celebration feel special!

Descent place with good options. The fajitas are super delicious. The taco salad was OK, the beef was a stew type meat that I don't usually pick for taco shell salad. Usually it comes with grilled chicken or beef and I ordered per that assumption. Overall the service was pretty good and we had a good meal before heading to Lovers Point Beach area.

The food is very good, the service is very personal. The building needs nosie quiting tech installed. Lots of hard surface reflection. Not a lot of soft materials to absorb noise or break up the sound waves.

Food and service were both very good but we couldn't hear ourselves talking across the table because of the acoustics inside the dining area on a busy Friday night. It wasn't like, "oh wow those people over there are really loud", it was more like "everyone at every table has to talk louder" because of the sound bouncing all around enclosed room. Definitely needing some sound deadening in the main dining room.

Usually good, we generally visit here at least once during a visit to Pacific Grove. This time, the food was good, but not as good as some of the other times that I’ve had it. It was also busy, packed, and noisy. But, I will still go back.

Great option for mexican food on the peninsula. The Prawns Gonzalez had a lot of flavor and the prawns were big and cooked perfectly, and came with a side of beans, rice and tortillas. The tortillas (flour) weren't the best and came out cold even though they were in a a small tortilla warmer. I also tried the tacos al carbon and they had great flavor, and considering they use steak meat you can definitely taste the difference compared to a lower quality beef cut. The margaritas are some of the best I've had in the area, and you probably can't go wrong with any of them. If you want to try something different and don't mind a little kick of heat, Jacob's spicy margarita is very good.

Great atmosphere and service. Sat at the bar... Where you can usually find us. Bartenders were both knowledgeable and attentive. Also have an outdoor seating area

I came here with my wife in early May. We really liked the food and drinks. The atmosphere is nice, servers were professional and attentive. This is not an authentic Mexican food spot. Don't expect streat style tacos and burritos. This is different. I got steak tacos and they were absolutely delicious. Thick cuts of steak with a few lovely toppings. Drinks are hitters and good. Is it a 8 out of 10. It's not a fine dining spot... and it's not straight from Mexico food.. it's somewhere in between. One of my fav spots in pacific Grove or Monterey (not sure what it's considered) and it's a good time with friendly staff. . Thanks.. I'll be back. Edit: I have been back a few times. I love peppers!!

Excellent perfect pulse of PG. We do our best to avoid touristy restaurants when traveling. This place has a clear appeal, a soul, and attracts lively local crowd.

The spot is great for what I consider "white people Mexican food" the food didn't have strong spices or flavor but I appreciated the freshness of the ingredients and was able to adjust the flavor of my dish by adding salsa. (Which was excellent!) Free chips and salsa were definitely appreciated and tasted great. I had the Yucatan snapper which the menu described as citrus and cilantro flavored with annato peppers and that it was "spicy". It wasnt flavorful but the fish was cooked well and the sides were good. My partner's grilled salmon taco had a bit of flavor from the grill (but no seasoning) Service was super friendly and I appreciated that Shirley temples had free refills since most places charge. Service was super friendly and attentive even tho it was extremely busy. Atmosphere is very cute pepper themed kitsch with fun paintings and decor.

A fun, reasonably priced Mexican restaurant for the area. The food was fresh but the sauces were a tad bit sweet for my preference. The down side was the noise level due to all of the hard surfaces.

The enchiladas have a delicious tortilla and flavorful sauce. The tacos were what one would expect from an Americanized Mexican restaurant, flour tortillas and shredded cheese, not too remarkable. The tables are stocked with Melinda’s hot sauce which offer a range of spice levels while delivering on flavor.

Expensive, prawns were terrible overcooked chewy and tasteless from being frozen far from fresh. Fresh prawns have a distinctive aroma and sweetness which is what makes them so expensive. When they've been quickly thawed not fresh they have no aroma and are basically tasteless except for the spice & recipe. Charging nearly 20 bucks for 4 small to medium tasteless prawns appetizer is a blatant ripoff.

Crowded and busy. Does have outdoor seating. Requested black beans, got refried. Chicken on tostada was mushy ball notl pulled chicken, hardly any lettuce. Used to be a favorite.

I was very disappointed , I ordered 2 Chile rellenos , I come here often , I a true local . The rellenos had canned peppers . It was loaded with onions , big chunks but hardly any peppers. My girl friend enjoyed her meal but she ordered something else .plus it got me sick to my stomach for 2 days . I will go back I will get something else MAYBE

We've loveed Peppers and have been going there for years. Unfortunately the service is inconsistent. Our server left us alone and never checked back. We'd wanted a dessert and another drink, but decided against it because we couldn't get the server to pay attention to us. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Either add staff or pay attention to customers. Sigh.

The most overrated Mexican restaurant on the Peninsula. Food covered in American cheeses. No authentic Mexican food, such as carnitas. Your choices are “chicken and beef.” If you’re looking for the real deal, this ain’t it.

This is an occasional stop when visitong the Monterey/Pacific Grove area. While my salmon tacos were good, athough I had to construct them myself with minimal garnish provided, my wife's tamale was very mushy. She asked for a new one and it came out the same. She substituted a chicken taco and got a hard taco that fell apart when she picked it up. She was done. No apology from the server, no removal from the bill. I guess since they push through so many people, they don't care if there is a casualty or two along the way. Won't be back any time soon.

Had to audit my own bill because the math didn't add up. The waiter tried to justify it with a 3% card surcharge and blamed "the computer," only to eventually realize I was being charged for a dish I never ordered. Corrected, yes - but not before a lot of unnecessary attitude. Food was mediocre, salsa we ordered never arrived. Advice: check your bill carefully if you eat here. The waiter was extremely rude and with attitude.

Some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had.... we should have walked out when we saw it was full of old people! No offense I love old folks but they don't exactly have the best taste buds. I ordered a smoked Gouda quesadilla and it had olives and other random vegetables in it. My family's food was very flavorless as well, we had to put salt on it to taste anything. It's quite unfortunate because it was a cute place with a good location. I have to say that the service was 5 stars, our waiter was extremely nice and accommodating.

$27 for lunch plate by myself. Rice, beans no flavor. Salsa ok. Packed food to go and gave to homeless. Never coming back. My go to place is Sarita’s Mexican Grill Restaurant 10 minutes up the road on Forest: sarita's mexican grill restaurant 21 Solidad Dr, Monterey CA

Had to cancel my order because of slow service. Server will show up once and disappear. Tables are too close to each other. No way you can have have conversation. Two servers for all tables. It's mainly seafood restaurant not Mexican.

This was by far, the worst mexican food I've ever had... I'm a San Diego native and I've had some great Mexican food and I will say, don't waste your money. The cuts of meat were awful. Store bought Tortillas, no sauce, no cheese, and no flavor. These cooks don't even know how to wrap a burrito... And from what I hear, the owners arn't even mexican. No Bueno!!!!!!

My wife and I used to live in walking distance of this place in PG so after countless people telling us about Peppers we decided to try it out. The drinks, despite being one of the few places that actually could put tequila in a marg, were mediocre. The salsa was good, but the entree's we ordered were bad. No seasoning or flavor whatsoever.

Disappointed. I recently visited Peppers, a Mexican restaurant that I used to enjoy, and I have to say that I was extremely disappointed. The food was incredibly bland and tasted like it had been sitting around for days. It was clear that the quality of the restaurant had declined significantly since my last visit. To make matters worse, the menu prices did not match the charges on my bill. I was shocked at how much I ended up paying for such low-quality food. The customer service was also severely lacking, with the staff seeming uninterested in our dining experience. The long wait for our food only added to our disappointment. When it finally arrived, it was clear that the kitchen had not put any effort into seasoning it. The portions were small and disappointing, making me feel like I had wasted my money on a meal that was on par with what I could have gotten at a chain restaurant like Applebee's. Overall, I would not recommend Peppers to anyone looking for a good Mexican dining experience. The food is lackluster, the service is poor, and the prices are unjustified. Save your money and go somewhere else. They are living on their past fame, They are way past their prime and should be retired.

We have been here multiple times and have loved the food but the service we had here on Thursday night was UNACCEPTABLE. We brought multiple people with us to show them our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area and sat on the patio. One person arrived late and put their order in 10 minutes after all of us did. When our food was brought out much later (I get it it's busy we were okay with that) one person at the table did not get there food for at least 10 mins if not longer than the rest of us. The person who was 10 minutes late to putting in their order waited OVER AN HOUR to get their food finally in a to go box because all of us had already left the restaurant because we were long done with our meal. Multiple people contacted our server and any wait staff we could find during this hour and kept getting told we are waiting on the kitchen, their order got buried (clearly forgotten about). This person didn't even want their meal anymore and wanted to leave but we already paid for their meal so they waited to get it. I called the manager next day on Friday she was supposed to call me back at 4pm never did. It is now Sunday and I still have not heard back. I will NEVER come here again and tell anyone to go to this restaurant. The service here NEEDS work.

Food was awesome but felt uneasy when we left because the waiter came out asking if everything was ok. We were fine and thought nothing of it until we looked back to see the waiter flipping us the bird. Wanted to go back but I feel too uneasy. 🥲
