Came in for Sunday brunch with bestie - and thoroughly enjoyed our time. We don't need much, food, drinks, and a place where we can just hangout and talk. St. Michael's was just that, plus some. Now, this isn't your average diner, cafe, etc. Food: expect great flavors, a variety of sweet and savory. We ordered french toast and chilaquiles - both were delicious, well balanced and sharable. We also ordered a carafe of grapefruit mimosa - which was slightly too tangy. But drinkable - you get a full bottle of cava in there, win! Ambience: this is more of an upscale restaurant - expected for downtown PA. But it's not bougie - setup to be more of a dimlight dinner, the settings look very formal in normal light. It's a great place to impress someone while staying within budget.

Always excellent choices for appetizers, entrees, and the rest. Attentive service without being intrusive. Outside dining is available and very pleasant. Competitive prices for an upscale casual spot in Palo Alto.

This is a nice restaurant with a comfortable dining room, a beautiful bar with additional seating for dinner, and an auxiliary site for larger groups. We love the wait staff and owner, and go there regularly. Food is good, ambiance is even better.

Nice atmosphere, well executed food. The chicken pot pie and flank steak were fantastic, but you must try the Carnitas Bao Buns!

Saint Michael's Alley is the best. They have some absolute gems on the wine menu, at pretty great prices. We loved their seabass and swordfish!

806 Emmerson is a lovely brunch spot on a quiet, leafy side street of Palo Alto, which is a nice spot to wait for your table. Very much enjoyed the Mexican breakfast and the small, sweet restaurant had a lovely atmosphere.

Ordered the lamb chops, medium rare. Also recommend the French fries and banana bread desert. Your mouth will thank you.

We had a delightful dinner here tonight. Hadn't eaten here in a while and they have a new spring menu. Terrific culinary renaissance! The scallops with asparagus,, potato medallions, and bacon were absolutely delicious. My husband loved the seabass with smoky flavored eggplant. Lamb and duck are also always outstanding as is the service and ambiance. Friendly, comfortable, and unobtrusive. They have also added an outdoor tent which is warmer than the old arrangement with just heat lamps and much more attractive. Very happy they have stayed in business! We will be back soon.

My experience at Saint Michael’s was really great. The location is great and the outdoor seating was very nice. It was great that we were able to bring our dog and the staff even had a water bowl waiting at the table for our arrival! The staff were all very personable, polite, easy to chat with. We had several appetizers and mains and each dish was delicious! We will definitely be back!

Had a delicious dinner on the back patio with great friends the other night. Along with an extensive wine list, the bruschetta was delightful, the ravioli with pancetta was incredible, and the steak and salmon were prepared to perfection. Thanks once again for an exquisite meal!

We celebrated a rehearsal dinner at St Michael's. It was fabulous. The food and service were exceptional, and everyone commented on the quality of service provided by Rigel. Rigel went above and beyond to make the evening a lovely and memorable event. Kaity Marx was so accommodating and very responsive. She custom made beautiful menus and floral arrangements especially for the event and went above and beyond to accommodate every request. The restaurant has a very elegant ambiance. If you are looking for a special place to have a party or group dinner...this is the place!

This remains one of my favorite restaurants in downtown PA. Comfortable, unstuffy, yet high quality ingredients and professional service. I particularly appreciate their local wine selections, as well as unique wines from other regions, all at a reasonable mark-up, which means it makes sense to order a bottle vs. wines by the glass.

Really good food with kind and quick service. A girl ran a stop sign and killed our car (after it was all settled-everyone was okay and insurance was taken care of) we were starving. The owner happened to overhear us and brought us champagne to help make the night a little better. Minus the stress of a car accident, they were 10/10 delicious and perceptibly kind.

Came here for our anniversary. I loved the pasta special they had that day. I think it was a casarecce with naked chicken and a lemon sauce. My wife had the short rib ravioli which was good but I preferred mine. Their cocktail list was amusing with some creative names and jokes mixed with the ingredients. I got the corpse reviver. It was a little too sour for me. All the appetizers were great. My favorite was the one with crab but the meat tar tar was good also.

Very good service and food. We had the scallops and salmon in lobster sauce. Both were great. We don't normally get dessert but splurged tonight. The cheesecake with plum-fig compote was very good. The sorbet was good, but unexceptional. However the waiter made up for there having been four (4) birthday singing groups around us by bringing a scoop of dulce de leche ice cream and two candles for our not-birthday. All in all, a great evening. My first time here; I would come back.

Loved the ambience to the T. Straight out of a novel. It is rightly labeled as a romantic restaurant, especially with the lighting at night. Food was extremely flavorful. A thorough treat for the senses. Vegetarian choices are limited though. Desserts were soul-satisfying. Staff was very courteous and pleasant too!

I walked in on a Sunday evening without a reservation. Lots of tables available. I had the halibut and a glass.of sancerre. Everything was delicious. The restaurant is cozy and there would be a good date night location.

My dad's jazz band played in the waiting room every Thursday and Friday when I was a kid in the late 70's-mid 80's. His pay was 4 dinners a week and oh, we ate very well here every week, indeed. Was so happy to enjoy a meal recently at the "new" location with the same focus on the highest quality ingredients and original yet restrained seasonings, sauces and accompaniments. Superb! Now, if I could only sidle next door afterwards for chocolate mousse, conversations with Vernon and the occasional game of chess with Jerry while Dad was busy working his fingers to the bass paying off our gustatory delight. We visited here and dined outside to celebrate an occasion. The staff were exceptionally nice and accomodating, and since we dined outdoors, they even offered us blankets to wear. A very cozy meal indeed! As for the the food, the pork belly was exceptional, and the ravioli was also very good. The lamb tenderloin was cooked with Sichuan peppercorns, but didn't have that characteristic numbing taste which was the only (mild) letdown during the meal (I cook with a lot of Sichuanese ingredients). But overall the experience was great and we'd definitely recommend trying this place out.

I reserved table for 8 at first but later had to changed to table for 10, the manager, Rigel very patiently changed for us and set up a perfect table for the party. Enjoyed a nice dinner in the outdoor patio with heat lamps. We brought our dog, which was fine with the restaurant. Dry January meant that we didn't try the cocktails, but dinner was great (salmon on the roasted beet and fennel salad) and capped it off with a nice dessert and cappuccino!

I visited Saint Michael's Alley for dinner and was pleased with the seasonal offerings. The menu is limited, so beware of inviting picky eaters. I enjoyed eating outside in the small patio, but the proximity to the other tables was more conducive to eavesdropping on other's conversations than listening to those happening at your own table. Service was attentive and helpful.

We usually don't go to fancy restaurants but since we lived in Palo Alto and I always wanted to go there some day we finally did:) For dinner. The service was very friendly as expected. The prices are a bit too much. Because the food was not as good as I thought. I had the roasted chicken with the polenta edge. It was ok. But we both just expected more. The desserts were also only ok. We had better. We wouldn't come again. But I would like to try their breakfast and brunch some day. We heard a lot of good things about it:)

ate brunch here twice and really enjoyed it, i love their simple breakfast plate, it's everything i want, eggs, potatoes, chicken apple sausage (super good). the service is very good and friendly. during brunch it gets really loud and hard to have a conversation especially when you have a loud chatty table full of women. :P

We have high expectations when dining at Saint Michael's Alley. The service is traditionally impeccable with caring staff. The wine list offers a wide selection, from affordable quality to expensive, as should be. For some reason however the cuisine has become less consistent. Hopefully only temporary.

A casual, cozy historic PA spot serving New American cuisine. I came here on a Thursday night for a birthday dinner. Our table of 5 was seated immediately. We sat down, read our menus, ordered a few starters to share, then each did our own entrees. Ambiance - 4 stars. The place is cute, artwork on the walls, low ceilings, and cozy. Ahi tuna poke - 5 stars. Raw chunks of tuna with wasabi, edamame, seaweed salad, and a yogurt sauce. Fresh and light, the wasabi brightened the tuna and the edamame and sesame added some texture. We shared this dish but I definitely wanted more. Crispy pork belly - 3 stars. Served with a thai chili vinaigrette and cucumber/onion salad. I found the pork slightly overdone and I was satisfied just with my bite. Special burrata & endive salad - 4 stars. I'm a sucker for burrata and this was creamy, stretchy, and delicious. The rest of the salad was good too, but really, are you paying attention to salad when there's burrata? Salmon with green curry sauce - 5 stars. A perfectly cooked piece of salmon on top of baby bok choy and asparagus, topped with a creamy spicy Thai green curry sauce. A generous portion, though the dish was light enough that I wasn't stuffed to the gills after. Lots of complex flavors, I would order this again. Service - 3 stars. There was a table near us that came in after we did that had their own prix fixe kinda thing going on. They were clearly some kind of party, and had brought all their own alcohol, and our service suffered because of it. They were doted on (as they probably should have been) but we were ignored. It took 20 minutes before someone came by to take our order and throughout the night our service was less attentive than it could have been. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at St. Michael's Alley and I'd definitely come back.

Can I give 3.5 stars? I grew up in Palo Alto, and somehow never made it to this Palo Alto institution until recently. Dinner was good, service was very friendly and helpful. For the price point, I think they can do better. ARTICHOKE AND CHEESE TART This was the star of the meal. It was fantastic. HAMACHI CRUDO WITH MEYER LEMON GELEE What were we thinking ordering this? The quality of the hamachi was so-so, the Meyer Lemon overwhelmed the Hamachi. HAZELNUT AND HONEY ENCRUSTED RACK OF LAMB The lamb was good. Not great. The red quinoa and asparagus were very good. Call me crazy, but I felt that the minted pea puree that came with my husband's scallops was a better match for the lamb than the tomato olive ragu that it came with. SEARED WILD SEA SCALLOPS, MINTED PEA PUREE Again, scallops were good, not great. TIRAMISU Delicious, creamy, not too rich. PROFITEROLES I thought I would like the mint ice cream, but these convinced me that classic vanilla is the best match. BASIL GIMLET I ordered a Basil Gimlet, but I think I got a standard Gimlet. It was very good, but not a Basil Gimlet. My husband had a cocktail he really enjoyed as well, but I can't recall the name. The service was friendly and helpful. Overall, the only 2 items that I would order again are the Artichoke and Cheese Tart, and the Tiramisu. The food was good, not great, which was a little disappointing (at this high price point, I would choose Evvia over SMA in the future).

Great spot for a special celebration or a date night. The place is pretty homey feeling (I think it might have been a house at one point), so make sure you have a reservation if you come with more than four people. The food is pretty good. Parking: street.

The service is great. Relatively speaking, this is one of the easier restaurants in the area to find parking for. But the food is mediocre. The tomato soup didn't have much taste. The filet mignon was unremarkable. The shared appetizers were ok. The only excellent menu item was the cheesecake.

Saint Michael's Alley is a charming little restaurant, and we were greeted quickly and given good service. We came after looking at the menu online (which looked delicious!) and were, frankly, disappointed by the new menu - which began this week. The ingredients were obviously high-quality but, in honesty, the food not altogether that great tasting. Wouldn't be my first choice.

Stopped by with a group for some late-night drinks. It's well decorated and laid out with a nice patio. However, it's downstairs to some apartments, so if you're here late and with loud friends, you'll probably be told to keep it down. Beer selection seemed fine; nothing special enough to be memorable. Didn't eat, so I can't comment on the food.

This was a borderline 3 or 4 stars and I rounded up. The food was good but not great - there were a few little things that if improved would have made it a solid 4 or better. The mains came out tepid when I was dining in a party of 2 - they would have been better hot. The bread (which we were charged for!) did not come out warm either, but it did taste fresh. The mains had high quality ingredients but not the most inspired flavoring (a bit under-seasoned/under-salted). Best parts of the meal were the cheese plate, the espresso martini, and the bread pudding dessert. I would try this place again but probably wouldn't return if the food wasn't at least hot. Everything was fine but at these prices I would expect higher attention to detail.

We were sitting in the back dining room which was lovely, but unfortunately the guests at the next tables were super loud and at times it was a challenge to carry on a conversation. Tuna poke noodles were refreshing and light. The portions much larger than I had expected. Steamed mussels were juicy and full of flavor. Brussels sprouts were crispy and well prepared. Overpriced place with mediocre food, poor wine selection and so-so service. Maybe in Bay Area it's acceptable to charge that much for such very mediocre food and service, but quite surprising for an european visiting Palo Alto.

Cute restaurant but food is pretty mediocre compared to brunches in SF. Had the salmon scramble - nothing worth noting. Biscuit looked like it came out of a frozen box.

The food was very good. The dining room I was seated in was intimate. A good atmosphere to take a date. Service was mediocre; we were not told the specials and when we asked we were told we were told. The staff were also arguing with the people behind us.

Maybe I ordered badly. Maybe I don't like old school restaurants. The appetizer menu is unimpressive. Just skip it. The entrees on the other hand are excellent. I don't know why. They don't have a modern cocktail list. Sadly. Hopefully you prefer wine.

While the food was fine and the restaurant had a nice ambience, we didn’t walk away thinking anything about the food, presentation, or experience warranted it being $400. We came home and still felt a bit hungry. Extremely pricy for what you get.

Food wasn't well seasoned as I would have hoped for the price the food should be perfect with each bite. The martini was dilated too much so it just tasted watery

The service was attentive and wine list was reasonable but the food was average...had the chicken pot pie, and Max's is better at a fraction of the price. It's a nice place to be seen, and the atmosphere is classic monied Palo Alto VC style...that's either the best reason to go or a reason to avoid.

Nice friendly service. Matthew was great. Old school vibe and older crowd. The mushroom cake app was good. The pappardelle was good but the sausage was dry. The sea bass was ok. The home cut fries were limp and in-n-out style, which im not a fan of. I may come back to try their brunch. otherwise, with so many great options in this pricier range, I wouldn’t.

The salmon is very high quality and very well cooked - one of the best I've had! None of the food was overly greasy and oily either.

The food is not bad at all, but I simply do not think it is worth the price that you must pay to have it. I had the tomato and mozzarella salad, which was literally slices of two different tomatoes, with three different mozzarella balls with a salmon on the side for $23. The salmon looked like the ones you buy from Costco and it was a little dry. The three scallops are like $40 and the steak as well. For the price you pay, you do not get a good enough portion or quality of food. The service here was also eh for the kind of restaurant it is. Our server forgot our bread without realizing for a while and our waters were not refilled for a long time (it was not that busy at the restaurant). It was also very chilly indoors, granted, it was hot outside so that's probably why the fans were on but it was cold. Overall, this place is okay, but if you're going to spend a lot of money on a meal, I would go elsewhere.

Lovely venue with ok service and variable food - given the price point, a pretty disappointing meal. Bread service was not included but was a $4 extra which seems rather stingy for a $100/plate meal. The highlight was probably the very tasty brussel sprout appetizer with harissa aioli with a delightful amount of spice, cream, and crunch. 4.5/5. The broccoli appetizer was the worst preparation I have ever had: a pile of boiled green stalks arrived vaguely infused with spice but with no salt or umame and were wincingly bitter 1/5. My wife ordered the arugula salad - staff thought they were being kind in just bringing out a split plate for both of us but didn't ask and I don't like arugula so I just gave her my half. She said it was passable. For entree I had the steak medium rare. It arrived cool to the touch and cooked medium to medium-well; the menu promised a coffee rub but very little flavor other than the meat was discernible and there was a meaningful amount of gristle on the outer rim. It also came with a side of...wait for it...bitter broccoli. At these these strands had a chance to mop up some of the steak juice and butter to give it some body. 3.5/5. Honestly when you pay $60 for a steak and think "I could make this better at home and probably have had steak equally tasty at Sizzler for 1/6 the price" it's not a great feeling. My wife had the fish and eggplant dish and rather enjoyed its novel preparation. (4/5?) I finished with the banana bread pudding, which was excellent. It came out quickly with cold ice cream and hot pudding with crunchy edges. 4.5/5. My wife had the chocolate cinnamon cake and really enjoyed it (4.5/5?) The wines by the glass were quite good and reasonably priced for their quality.

The food was meh. Steak chewy, polenta tasteless as if they just booked it, fish dry, mushrooms tasteless as if they just tossed them in the pan with a little olive oil. Super boring and not worth it.

I wasn't very impressed. Maybe the ambiance told me to expect more, but it was just kind of OK. I had a pasta dish and we sampled a bunch of appetizers too - none really had a wow factor Their desserts were really amazing though.

I had a pasta dish (cavatelli with broccoli rabe), it was terrible. Cooked for two minutes short of Al dente, no flavor, not the right oils. I can make a substantially better version of this effortlessly. The mushroom cake appetizer was good.

Was really looking forwards to our dinner, but it was just a bit meh. Service was half-hearted, and food was 1-dimensional, comparable to a much cheaper restaurant. Plated & presented well though.

Wanted to make a reservation for 10 ppl. They asked for a $90 minimum each person. That's hard to reach for people who don't drink alcohol. This sounds like a greedy management to me. Not considering going back to this place again. They aren't for the customers but for their profit.

Bad, rude service by waiter (older man). He forgot our bread basket ($4 extra), and we had to ask for it. We asked for two boxes, he took our plates, never returned with boxes, or said he couldn't box our meals?? Where did our leftovers go, St. Michael's?? We asked for vanilla ice cream w. Dessert, but got chocolate. My family was in from out of state, have never been to the Bay area, and were shocked at the low quality service and poor treatment. They were not happy. It took an extra 20 mins to get the check while he was having a full conversation w. The other, probably wealthier patrons he treated better. We overheard the servers talking about getting big tips from the regulars there that night, but we were treated like second-class citizens because we weren't one percenters/ rich regulars I guess? Will be telling friends and fam about our bad experience and never returning to these rude servers, especially for $60 entrees. Shame on St. Michael's Alley👎

Long story short— I made one specific special request with my brunch order. Had our server simply told me that it might not be possible, I would have happily ordered something els. Instead, I was just brought food prepared to the exact opposite of my specification, twice. I tried eating it the second time it was served because my other guests were already halfway through their own meals, but it was terrible. When the check came, I whispered to our server to please take that item off the bill. He looked me straight in the face and said, “Sure, but can you tell me what the problem was?” It really took some self control not to get angry at that question. If you’re craving light and fluffy pancakes, don’t come here. And if you’re expecting a waitstaff that actually behaves like they know what words mean, also, don’t come here.

They put us on a very small table on the sidewalk. All 4 other parties around us asked the server to change tables. Terribly overpriced. Short menu, small portions, food had no salt and nothing special at all. The server suggested the skirt steak which is served with a weird sweet coconut risotto. Do not recommend this place.

Food quality was ok but serving size was very very small. 3 scallops for $40; clam chowder soup without clams or potatoes (like cream of mushrooms) & salmon portion was small. Overpriced restaurant.
