Came in for a weekday lunch while we were in the Pasadena area. We were greeted and seated right away. The restaurant is very clean, well designed, and very spacious. For the menu, we opted for the lunch specials with the Hakata set and I forget the other one, but it was with the teriyaki combo. Both sets were well prepared and presentation was nice. For lunch, the Hakata combo is a lot of food, but it was so good, I ended up finishing it all. No regrets. The tsukemono was little too sweet for my personal liking, but it was prepared well. The kaarage was well cooked, nothing special, in the usual aioli most places served. The tuna bowl was delicious and well prepared with just the right portion of rice. The protein to rice ratio was just right. My favorite was the tonkotsu ramen. While the noodles themselves don't stand out compared to other ramen places, the broth is delicious. Love the smokiness with the black garlic and it's not too heavy. The pork was thick and had just enough fattiness to it, plus the addition of the bamboo and egg made it a nice dish. For the chicken teriyaki plate, the salad was basic lettuce and thousand island dressing. The miso soup had plenty of onions and tofu. The chicken I thought was well prepared, nice and crispy on the outside, without being burnt while being tender and moist on the inside. It's a great place for lunch. One of these days, I do want to come back and try their regular menu, especially the Pandora's box.

K

The food was exceptionally good. It was definitely different than any average local japanese restaurant. I ordered sashimi(it was called Pandora box), and the setting and the taste were very special(you would know what I am talking about when you order this this). It was pricy, but it was tatally worth!! I often choose to go to Pasadena for a fine dining for a special occasion. Mills Alley is definitely the one in Pasadena. All the people there were nice and very friendly. Even the chef came to us and talked to us for a moment, and he made us feel really comfortable there, too. Overall, it was a great experience. There are so many other things to try, so I am definitely going back one day.

OMG best Japanese food I had ever. Their skewers are a miracle. Max level of juiciness and umami/harmonious blend of salt sugar and soy sauce and so on so authentic. Please please do try this place!

Wow! It's hard to find a place that has a lead chef invested in every aspect of your visit and this is it. I recommend sushi by the piece, but if you'll trust the chef recommends you'll come to appreciate sushi at another level. Plus the service is excellent.

Why is this Japanese food place called Mills Alley? I don't know, don't care. If you're looking for sushi that's a bit different but still tasty fresh the way your redined tastebuds like it, then get over here and order a bowl or something.

Went to this place with my family for Valentine's day dinner. They had the Valentine's day special menu for two people and it was fantastic. My wife and I had the special and the kids had a-la-carte dishes (edamame, gyoza, gyudon). Kids ended up eating 3 orders of gyoza on top of everything else. The special, a nine-course meal, was simply divine. The order and the portion of the dishes were perfect that every course tasted just right and progressed positively. The presentation was immaculate as well. Loved the Beef Tatakai which came right before the "Pandora's Box" (see photos for both). Servers were attentive and the space was expansive that I didn't hear other tables at all. Highly recommend a visit to this place.

If you're craving sashimi/sushi and looking for a hidden gem, this place is it! While the menu is pretty simple, the food was absolutely delicious and the ingredients tasted very fresh. We ordered the tako waso, vegetable tempura, and grilled hamachi (collar) to start. The tako waso had a well-balanced flavor with a nice kick of wasabi, which made it a fantastic starter to open up our appetites. It was a tad on the salty side, but still a great start to the meal. The batter on the vegetable tempura was light and crispy, and had a perfect crunch to it without being greasy or overfried. For our meal, we ordered the Pandora's Box which is a sashimi platter with 6 types of sashimi and 2 pieces each. This is perfect to share between two people, and offers a nice variety of different fish to try! The fish was incredibly fresh, with a rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture. A truly satisfying and high-quality meal. To top off the fantastic food, the service was also great. I will definitely be back here!

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on a Friday and loved it. The decor was modern, clean, and well curated. We ordered hot sake, a few pieces of sushi and hand rolls, the tonkatsu ramen, and the chicken karage don. Everything was delicious, and the lemon pepper scallop sushi was particularly memorable. The servers/chefs were attentive and kind, and we had a fantastic dining experience. We’re definitely come back, and are keen to try their omakase!

The food was fantastic and our server, David, was a great help as he seemed very knowledge of the menu. He explained everything in great detail and even went to the kitchen to make sure if the dish was available. Thank you David, we will for sure come back for the grand opening.

My wife and I visited Mills Alley today, and we were truly impressed by the thoughtful layout of the restaurant. The well-spaced seating creates a wonderfully comfortable atmosphere, allowing guests to fully enjoy their meals. The pork katsu don was exceptionally authentic, with a delightful hint of sweetness that made it especially memorable. The owner and waitress were incredibly warm and welcoming, adding a personal touch that sets this place apart from others. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience!

Went during their soft opening so their menu wasn’t fully available. But what we got was still really amazing. The service was great and the restaurant setting is nice.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Mills Alley with a group of over 20 people and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we walked in, the service was top-notch. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to accommodate our large party. Now, let's talk about the food. The sushi at Mills Alley is out of this world. Each bite was bursting with flavor and freshness. The presentation was beautiful and the portions were generous. Whether you're a sushi aficionado or a newbie, there is something for everyone on the menu. Overall, I cannot recommend Mills Alley enough. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere make it a must-visit spot in Pasadena. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and make a reservation at Mills Alley. You won't be disappointed.

Japanese spot with sushi, nigiri, noodles, and more. We ate tapas style in a group of five and I really enjoyed this meal. We had the toro, Karaage, vegetable tempura, various sushi, and I also ordered a tonkatsu for myself with the spicy sauce on the side. The food came out as it was ready. The fish quality was solid and everything was tasty. The desserts were a bit lackluster compared to the entrees (we had tiramisu, pistachio and a lemon dessert) so I’d focus more on the savory items. I had some green tea as well, which complemented the meal nicely. Service was nice and the ambiance was laid back but cute. There are restrooms located in the back through a set of doors.

I came here twice in two days while my family was visiting town. We went because it was new and we could get in with a large party on a Friday night. I am SO GLAD we did. They don’t have sushi rolls (please add some) , but their fish for sashimi and hand rolls are firm, sliced thick, and fresh. The ramen was top notch. The sliced brisket on rice was delish and not too sweet (which is common at Japanese places), the hamachi was top notch, and every other dish I tried was really nice. Go check this new place out. I want them to remain for years to come.

My friend and I visited Mills Alley on a Friday night at 6:30 pm and were seated immediately, which was a great start to our evening. The service was attentive throughout, making us feel well taken care of. We ordered the chirashi bowl, and every piece of fish was fresh and delicious. The waiter told us they receive the fish delivery every morning. The highlight for me was the yellowtail collar, which was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. To finish, we had the pistachio dessert and some hot sake, both of which were delightful. The lighting and ambiance were perfect for a good conversation, and I really appreciated the cushioned seats, which made the dining experience much more comfortable. It's the little details like this that make a big difference. The quality of the food and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. I'll definitely be coming back to enjoy more of their amazing dishes!

Absolute perfection. The food, the service and the atmosphere are outstanding. The most buttery, delicious salmon I’ve ever had…couldn’t stop eating the salmon hand rolls. Every single thing had incredible flavor and melted in your mouth, starting with the garlic edamame. Try it out, you won’t be disappointed.

I think one of the ways to really enjoy genuine good eats made by people who genuinely enjoy what they are doing is to dine at the sushi bar, 1 guest. which is excellent since I'm always on the road, so its normally just me. Also, a quiet night, not crazy quiet but just enough to enjoy the ambiance and still have nice conversations with the chefs as they prepare the orders. I had driven close to 800 miles that day, and I was in my hotel room at the Westin in Pasadena and found this place. But I was tired and didn't want to go out. But I did, reluctantly. But the quiet nice made for a nice walk. And I had my mission. I passed a few other shops on the way, but they didn't harmonize with me just right. I got to Mills Alley and immediately happy. I sat at the sushi bar, alone, and ordered from the chef. Man, this guy is kind to the guests and to the customers. genuinely! I had a few orders of sushi to begin, and I had to see how their uni held up. I went through scallops and bluefin, all just perfect with the lightest hint of flavors. Amazing. I continued to talk - and try not to bother - the kind chef, and I asked him if he would fix me some dishes that makes him happy. He said that he was happy because he saw me eating the food and being happy! He was right. I finished after slowly sampling bites, digesting with my 12th cup of tea with ginger. At the end, I told Chef - You've made me cathartic. I worked outside all day, and this just gave me happiness, nourishing, flavorful, done by someone who really loves their work. And I mean he was genuinely happy and proud. That's the great kind energy that needs to go back out into the world and frankly into my belly. Needless to say, I'm coming back Wednesday. Thank you, Jin!

Stopped in after learning my go to Pasadena sushi place closed down and my back-up was closed. Mills Ally was a surprise, don’t let the name fool you, it’s a full on Japanese joint. The atmosphere was perfect for lunch, Samson was attentive and informative adding to the meal experience. But, the lunch plates were the stars of the show. I had the Tokyo Set with spicy tune. Let me say it was a 4.5 out of 5. I defunct .5 b/c, wow es muy spicy! My wife got the Nara Set, and loved it. I tried her tofu steak and it might be the best I’ve had at this price point. Come to Mills Alley for lunch, you will not regret it.

Due to the waiter’s neglect, we sat at our table without water or anything for 20 minutes. However after telling the manager about our situation, he quickly made up for it. Food was delicious and fresh, the manager’s welcoming attitude also touched us, will definitely come back next time!

I will definitely return here to expand my ramen pallette. I would feel comfortable experimenting with dishes new to me at this place. But my initial udon craving was quite thoroughly satisfied. There's so much more of that menu to explore! It's a very attractive place to dine. Despite the abundance of hard, reflective surfaces, the acoustics easily allow for conversation without shouting. They have a lengthy list of sakes available. I look forward to checking out the dining patio on a week less muggy than when I visited.

I was warmly greeted immediately upon walking in by the chefs and knew it was going to be good. I had ramen and tried toro sushi - the quality of the fish was so good that I went back for a second night in a row and had the chirashi, which was exceptional. Very fast service and delicious food - I never repeat restaurants when I travel until now, and will definitely come back when in Pasadena again.

Delicious Zaru Soba set. The dipping broth had a wonderful unique flavor. The tempura on the side was perfectly bartered and not overly oily. Everything was fresh and delicious. Beautiful atmosphere - l can’t wait to try more here.

I’ve walked by Mills Alley multiple times and I had no idea it was a Japanese restaurant until I went with a group! They’ve got a great lunch menu with quite a bit of variety. They have a good selection of sushi and fish, I went with the Kobe teriyaki chicken lunch meal and you get miso soup, rice, salad, and of course chicken. The kitchen was quick, didn’t take long for food to come out at all. The wait staff service won’t blow your socks off so maybe lower expectations just a bit. Would recommend if you’re in the downtown area!

Loved the food. Delicious. Staff were very friendly and professional. We tried the dishes based on their recommendations and it was real good. Foods were served quickly. Highly recommended and will definitely be back again.

I went there for the first time because of a friend's recommendation, and I liked the open kitchen and the clean and simple cafe style, not like other izakaya style. It was nice to be greeted at the open sushi bar. The food was reasonably priced and I thought it was worth the price when the food came out. The quality of the food was very good, it was very flavorful, and it was delicious. I think the quality of food is more important than the price. I went for lunch this time, but next time I will go for dinner. I recommend this place if you want to eat good quality and delicious sashimi, sushi, and Japanese food.

Been here many times but this is the first time sit at the sushi bar. Get to meet the owner Jun, and all his staff are as friendly as himself, taking pride in serving. Tired of the same old Japanese dining experience in old town? Head to Mills Alley for an authentic taste that truly surprises. Despite the non-Japanese name, the culinary experience here is nothing short of extraordinary. Having visited twice, our Valentine's Day indulgence featured a special menu with standout items. The Fresh Oyster with Uni stole the show, a luxurious splurge worth every bite. The Pandora Box offered a delightful surprise in each mouthwatering morsel. The Beef Tatakai was a melt-in-your-mouth sensation, and the Tuna hand roll showcased a mysteriously fantastic preparation. Other highlights included the mini udon kaizen with its exquisite sesame oil infusion and the mini garlic-seared salmon don, where surprise garlic bits complemented the fish perfectly. While the mentaiko cream udon leaned towards the heavier side, it maintained its distinct flavor profile. On the regular menu, the tempura, although good, took a backseat compared to the other unique dishes. The standard ice cream rounded off the meal with nothing noteworthy. During our second visit, the pork katsu don and Oden nabe proved solid choices for a regular dinner, but not necessarily for impressing. The service and ambiance create an ideal setting for a dinner date, and for those eyeing the omakase experience, a reservation a week in advance is recommended. As a bonus, knowing they share ownership with Urban Pocha, one can't help but crave their fried chicken gizzard, wishing it could make its way to Mills Alley. P/S: this post was edited using chatgpt. Lol.

I recently dined at Mills Alley and was blown away by the experience. The Garlic Chicken Karaage was a flavor explosion - crispy on the outside and incredibly juicy on the inside, with just the right amount of garlic to elevate the dish without overpowering it. The Beef Tataki was equally impressive, perfectly seared with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and complemented by a delicious ponzu sauce. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff was attentive and friendly. This has quickly become my go-to spot for Japanese cuisine. Highly recommended!

Great experience, went for the soft opening and the service, atmosphere, and food was fantastic. For the price of the food, you're given quite a bit, the sushi + raw stuff are fresh, and the wait time is pretty short. I had the Hakama set (ramen, karaage, spicy tuna bowl, and pickled radish), which I highly recommend. The owner and staff were friendly as well.

Tucked inside the always-cool Mills Alley, Milked Alley surprised me. I came in for a quick bite and ended up staying longer than planned because the ramen was that good. The broth is rich and balanced—deep umami without being overly salty. You can tell they take the time to do it right. The noodles? Perfectly chewy and hold up in the bowl without getting soggy. I had the shoyu ramen and added a soft-boiled egg—yolk was spot-on, jammy and seasoned just enough. The vibe here is something else too: cozy, unpretentious, with a bit of that new-school LA-Japanese aesthetic—wood, stone, and ambient lighting. You can sit solo or with friends and not feel out of place. If you’re into ramen that respects tradition but doesn’t try too hard to be trendy, this is it. I’m already planning to come back and try the spicy miso. Also—bonus points for friendly staff and fast service. Pasadena needed a spot like thi

This is a nice addition to Old Town. Came on a weekday dinner, wasn’t crowded at all. Ramen was surprisingly very good as mentioned by other reviewers. I usually avoid tonkatsu flavor as my go to is a clearer broth but this has converted me! It’s flavorful with being too rich. Chirashi is satisfying, evident with fresh ingredients!

The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff was attentive and friendly. This has quickly become my go-to spot for Japanese cuisine. Highly recommended!

Had an awesome time at MILLS ALLEY! The place nails the whole artistic Japanese cuisine vibe. The sushi was on point – fresh and flavorful. The attention to detail in presentation is impressive. Cozy atmosphere, great service. Definitely recommend for a tasty and enjoyable experience!

Lol.

Why is this Japanese food place called Mills Alley? I don't know, don't care. If you're looking for sushi that's a bit different but still tasty fresh the way your redined tastebuds like it, then get over here and order a bowl or something.

Amazing place!! Staffs are so kind and the foods are so fresh. Especially the sushi is another level. BEST Japanese restaurant in this area!

This place is decent, a little overpriced. Nothing blew me away but also nothing was disappointed.

The service is excellent. Multiple waitresses asking if you need anything. The food is beautifully presented and tasted great. But it's a little pricey. My main gripe was the rice with spicy tuna for $30. It was good but way overpriced. The tempura was very well cooked and the sushi was good. Beautiful restaurant as well.

Located in Fair Oaks in Old town Pasadena. Dining area is spacious. It appears they are still doing a soft opening. I came on a weekday night, and the restaurant had maybe 3 tables including our party. There was only 1 server for the night. With her being so busy, it took a little while to get her attention. Our server is very nice when we get to talk to her, but just a bit hard to get her attention at times. We ordered dishes based on our servers recommendation. The notable dishes are the Chirashi. Most sashimi from the Chirashi arw fresh. The scallop is especially fresh and sweet! Other than that, other items are just decent. We also had the unagi crab hand roll… which we felt the unagi favor totally covered the taste and texture of crab… making them not too compatible together. Presentation of food is nice and picture worry. Cost of food is decent based on restaurants in Pasadena.

The sashimi is the best my sister and I have ever had! The hand rolls were also fresh and well balanced. The downside was the pork in the Tonkotsu ramen was overcooked and chewy and overall a bit too salty. Our server was also very sweet but did not check in on us during our meal and forgot some side requests. But overall very fresh sushi and a good vibe :)

Came here for my birthday celebration. Public parkings are all over old town Pasadena, so parking is not difficult. The decoration was very trendy, and clean. We were seated soon after we arrived. Our server was friendly, and she seemed to be the only one working. Service was a little slow, but I do not blame her for it. At one point, we actually felt a little pressured on placing our order, which makes sense because she might not be able to attend to us later. We ordered some sushi, and it is one piece per order. We ordered salmon sushi, yellowtail sushi, yellowtail sashimi, uni sashimi, garlic yellowtail sushi, toro sushi, blue fin tuna sushi, real crab hand roll, yellowtail hand roll. The fish was very fresh. I highly recommended on the salmon sushi. It melted in my mouth! The toro sushi is $12 a piece, and the fish was a very thin slice, and it did not give me the texture of melted in my mouth. Not worth the price. We spent $200 here for 2 people, and we left feeling hungry. The quality of the sushi was good, but not good enough to be worth the price we paid for. I can probably get omakase, and be full else where with the price I paid for.

The only nice thing here is atmosphere, and at most the service! Food is very average! All appetizers are lower than average, no taste at all!

K
Kevin Smith

Tasty, but be forewarned: When the price says $7.00 for sushi, that's for ONE PIECE, NOT TWO like most places. That makes it more expensive than it's worth.

This review is for the service, not the food. We got the bill and paid for it before we decided we wanted to get a scoop of ice cream for the kids to share. 10 mins waiting, we asked the server twice where the dessert was, he told us that “they were making it” and they had to make and serve the other customers their food first since we were “last to order”. He was going to make us wait what looked like another 10 mins for ONE scoop of ice cream that would take less than 2 mins to scoop up and bring out?! The kids were clearly already getting antsy but his attitude wasn’t budging. We asked for a refund for the ice cream and walked out. I’m not even complaining about the automatic 20% service charge for six since they counted two babies as customers. Im complaining that we paid the 20% charge and the service sucked in the end. Disappointing because the food was actually decent.

The food for the most part was good but I don’t know if it’s worth the price. Cute space as well. Customer service for certain staff can be better. The guy that understands and speak decent English was nice and better than this lady that had trouble understanding? At one point during my meal with my party, we ordered a side of udon noodles to add to our seafood napa hotpot, confirmed with us then later proceeded to bring out a whole kake udon which was served by the male server. We clarified with him that we just wanted a side of udon noodles, not a whole dish. Ten minutes later, the woman server comes by with a whole bowl of udon noodle with soup and a side of udon noodle… had to tell them again that we just wanted a side of udon noodles. Walks away after giving us the side of udon noodles. We thought it was the end of it. A while after, she comes back out of no where and try to like make us feel like we were at fault for confusing them or had them making new bowls of udon? She came and said “next time just say you want A SiDE oF uDOn noodles bc we made a whole new udon noodle” emphasizing the udon noodle… we were so confused as to her point because we literally SAID a side of udon noodle, is that so hard to understand? We just overlooked their mistake but like what is that behavior at the end? Coming by just to tell us how we should properly order for a side of udon noodles when we did? Explain yourself? Lmao
