Opinions de The Plough and the Stars Philadelphia
We decided to try Irish food on our visit to Philadelphia. The staff were pleasant, and the service was efficient. The food tasted great! We came in about 5 pm on Saturday. The place was definitely busy, but we were able to secure a table for 5 easily. We ordered calamari for a starter and ordered the Guiness Casserole, chicken wrap, fish & chips, Plough Steak Fritte, and Irish-style chicken curry. We enjoyed trying each others dishes and found all of the entrees delicious. The restrooms were also clean and well kept.
Enjoyed fantastic fish and chips and live music on Sunday afternoon after a long day exploring the city.
🇮🇪 First time here & we’ll definitely be back! Caught Rum & Red Roses LIVE (Pogues Tribute Band) - loved it!!! Service was phenomenal! The Beer Battered Haddock Sandwich was fried to perfection and soup du jour (Seafood Chowder) melted in your mouth like butter. Definitely check them out. Totally worth it!
Definitely more new experience for me. I really love the atmosphere there - feeling cozy and warm, and the decorations are lovely. I had fish and chips, and my friend had curry and shrimp - both very nice (I tasted a bit of my friend's choice). And I have to say the fish had a large portion. They were probably a bit slow on water because people later flooded in for the world cup. But anyway, I really enjoyed the World Cup at the same time (I'm also a soccer fan but did not aim for watching it today). Last, in particular, I love the fiddling picture and the fire place underneath - look forward to their live music next time (I saw they do have some in holidays evenings).
It’s great service and well cooked food. There was no sign that said Plough and the Stars outside. This mom and pop place is owned and managed by Mariette (no sure about the spelling). She brings fresh flowers in and checks in with the diners. They brought out two slices of Irish soda bread with plenty of raisins and a savory bread with tons of wheat berries. This is a true Irish Restaurant/pub. They have Haddock for fish and chips. Authentic vinegar to go with them chips. Chips were homemade, not frozen. We had the Guinness casserole. It was a delicious stew of carrots and beef. So tender you can fork it into pieces. The flavor is what I was craving of a well cooked dish. I wish I had more stew juices to eat with the potatoes. I was pleasantly surprised with the broccoli sautéed in garlic. So there was also a juicy grilled tomato wedge. We had a mozzarella tomato salad. Four slices of tomato topped with sliced of prosciutto and mozzarella. The other half of the dish were fresh mixed greens and dressed with a champagne vinaigrette.
Rebecca gave my group the best service we had in the entire city. We were here for the Marine Corps 250th birthday and came back here 3 times because of her service and smile plus the good food. The place was packed but we didn't have to ask for anything , she treated us like we were the only people in the place.
Beautiful place that smells great from burning fireplace. We were 6 ladies and no one had any complaints. I had the Hamburg that did not present well but tasted like it was made on real charcoal. Two ladies had fish and chips and they loved it. One has Shepard’s pie and said it was perfect, other two ladies had chic sandwiches and enjoyed them very much. We would all come back. Good value.
We loved it here and genuinely enjoyed our meal here. When we came in on Sunday and were sat next to the fireplace and the live band so we had a very warm intimate experience there. The cocktail program here was amazing we got spiked apple cider with rum and the adult hot apple pie and both were delicious. The chicken tenders are hand breaded which were really good with a very slight kick. I got chicken curry which was very spicy to me but still enjoyable, although I personally wouldn't order it again because I am not very tolerant of spice.
We just had a great experience here. The waitress Jen was the main reason we had such a good time. She was kind, helpful, and bubbly. She checked in on us regularly and was very attentive with our table. This is the pinnacle of customer service. The waitress came out and offered us two types of bread to start, one sweet one savory. The food came out quick. We each ordered a shepherds pie which was very tasty. I got an order of chicken tenders which were honestly perfect. They were juicy on the inside and perfectly crispy without having too much batter on the outside. It didn’t come with french fries; however, there was a bunch of tenders. I was amazed though, if I’m ever craving chicken tenders again this will be my go to spot. We sat outside and it was very pleasant with the exception of a little rain towards the end. The food looked so good that we had several people approach us to ask what we were eating. A bus driver even stuck her body out the bus window because she wanted to know what we ordered.
We visited on a Monday evening, got a table around 6 right away. Friendly atmosphere and quick service. The food was good not great. Loved the cooked cabbage with our meals. The salmon was delicious but the shrimp were fishy. The pork ribeye meal was good. There was a baseball game on and it felt like a cozy family friendly place to be that early in the evening.
I have 5 criterias for being an irish pub. This one got 3 of the 5. Too bad I didnt get there food or it might have been 4. They had Murphys..... that was a huge plus.
I recently visited for Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised by the food. The eggs Benedict (both ways - Irish rasher and smoked salmon) were delicious, but the highlight was the French toast (apples, pears, and raspberries). The only negative I had was the coffee, which was very bitter and burnt. Otherwise, the food was delicious and I would go again.
Great interior with bar and seating options on main level and upstairs. Fireplace is great for winter. Outdoor tables. Excellent beer selection and Guinness variations. Many good food options. Fish and chips was excellent, as was the curry.
For years I thought I had Guinness casserole for dinner but apparently I was lying - they have it here and it’s delicious- highly recommended! Amazing drinks ! Fish and chips good too! Wonderful service!!
First time here and I have no complains. Food is great, wings are awesome not true Buffalo but good flavor. Shepard’s pie just as good as the reviews say. Drinks are great. Recommend hot apple cider. Atmosphere is great and good place to watch the eagles play.
High-top outdoor tables, attentive staff and a full menu with something for everyone, including our vegan friend. She got the Plough Hummus, which looked good. We shared the Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Beyond Sausage Crumbles and it was so delicious, I forgot to take a photo. I also really enjoyed the Shepherd's Pie.
The menu here is extensive. The food is consistently delicious! The atmosphere is friendly and fun. You always feel like a regular even if it’s your first visit. The staff is welcoming and attentive. The live music always has the crowd participating in the fun.
Mouth watering food and welcoming atmosphere. The clamp soup was one of the best so far. Staff interactions with costumers was friendly and polite all the time.
One of our favorite bar/restaurants in Old City. Consistently excellent service at the bar or a table. Friendly staff. Live music Sundays , Tuesdays, and special events. The food is SO good. Handicapped accessible (there’s a 2nd floor, but bar, restrooms and main dining area are accessible. Fireplace in the winter. Outdoor tables on the sidewalk for nice weather. Everything is wonderful here!
We had dinner at the Plough. It was fantastic. We were met by our witty host with a heavy Irish accent who seated us. Eva was our wait person. She was attentive, friendly, and always available. We had the Ribeye Pork and the Guinness Casserole. They were outstanding meals. Cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was local and genuine. Prices were reasonable. Go and enjoy the Plough.
Not an Irish Soccer fan so maybe the timing could have been better... game was on, place was lit! Food was outstanding, but they clearly weren't staffed to handle the crowd. Breakfast wrap & a Pint. Perfect!
We hosted a wonderful celebration at The Plough & The Stars for about 50 people recently. We utilized the top floor mezzanine area. We had a private bar and butlered hors d'oeuvres. We worked with Marion to prepare for the party.. very friendly and easy to deal with. We were able to use the big screen to show a slideshow of the guest of honor. The staff at the Plough & The Stars who serviced our party were fabulous. Patrick, our bartender, kept the drinks flowing and Rebecca did a wonderful job with service. KatieLynne, the manager, kept checking in to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction. We hope to book another event with the Plough & Stars in the near future!
The chicken fried steak was amazing. It's mostly due to the rich and delicious country style gravy. The meatloaf was also fantastic, but the chicken fried steak was a little better. Couldn't go wrong with either. I wish we were around to try a few other plates on their menu. Service was friendly and prompt.
Got snowed in down in Philly and ended up at Plough & the Stars, which turned out to be the best possible place to ride out the chaos. The city was a mess, flights were getting canceled left and right, and the restaurant suddenly got slammed with about 60 people from the wedding we were at who were also stranded. In the middle of all that, our waitress Izzy was an absolute rockstar. She had only picked up the shift because her own vacation flight to London got canceled, but you never would’ve known it. She was upbeat, totally composed, and somehow managed to take care of a packed house without missing a beat. Food was great, drinks kept coming, and even with the storm and the crowd, the whole place felt warm and welcoming. Izzy deserves a medal for how she handled that night. If you ever find yourself stuck in Old City during a snowstorm, Plough & the Stars is where you want to land.
An actual authentic Irish bar! Phenomenal food and great whiskey selection, good draft selection as well. We were seated right away, Addison was our server. Great service very attentive no wait for the food and the food you can tell is authentic and homemade. We went in for a quick bite and stayed for a while. Very impressed
Had a great dinner, came back for drinks. The food was outstanding, had the Sunday Roast dinner. All of the staff were extremely attentive and even crowded, we wanted for nothing. Came back later for drinks and had the lamb pops, which were so good. Highly recommend👍
New favorite spot! We live nearby and will be back. I have food allergens and they were very accommodating. 10/10 bar service. Food was incredible and service was stellar. We also have a one year old and its often hard for us to go out to eat. They were great about getting us seated and making our whole family (including toddler) welcome. Our server was Jordan and he was such a gem! Thank you for a great night out for our whole group.
First visit to Philadelphia, and we found a gem! After walking all day to see the historical sites, we stopped for dinner with our friends. We each had different dishes, and every one of us were really impressed with the flavor and quality. Don't miss out on the desserts. They are incredible, too.
Beautiful Irish pub with great food. Came in on a Sunday night and enjoyed the live Irish music. Highly recommend the fried calamari- huge pieces and perfectly cooked.
The shepherd’s pie was hearty, perfectly portioned, and well seasoned. The cocktails were surprisingly top-tier—creative, balanced, and dangerously easy to drink. Definitely a spot worth returning to.
My favorite pub in the city - have been going there regularly for nearly ten years now, and I can't think of a more inviting spot in the city. Good food, great friendly staff, always open when you need a place to go, and good for every occasion - I've been there for brunch with my in-laws, a dance-y Friday night out, dinner on my birthday with family, and a nightcap on Christmas day. It's a classic for a reason.
Loved loved dinner tonite at Plough & the Stars!!! The food was superb with a beautiful presentation! (Pork Ribeye and Plough Steak Fritte) Flourless chocolate cake….mwah! Delicious! The ambience is gorgeous… and was enhanced by the cozy fire that we sat near. Emma our waitress was so sweet, and attentive. Thanks Emma!!! What a dinner delight we found tonite. Don’t walk……run!!!
What an amazing find! Really great food and ambiance. Not a topical Irish bar that is dark and food kind of ok but greasy. We loved the appetizer lamb lollipops and Brussels sprouts and fish and chips and steak Fritz! Lived the cocktail seasonal offers and the fact that the owner was walking around and checking on everyone. And the fire place is a huge plus! Will definitely go back!
Me and 3 pals rolled up to the Plough on a Monday evening and was made to feel so welcome by the really friendly owners sat out front. This soon became our local in Philly as the food, booze, service and atmosphere was superb, couldn’t fault it. Every single member of staff were super friendly and made you feel very comfortable. The owners and Austin have nailed it. Guiness was unreal too
The day after the wedding, we were completely snowed in and ended up at the Plough & the Stars for breakfast… and stayed for the entire day! The hospitality from the staff was incredible. They graciously accommodated our group of over 70 people without missing a beat. Izzy was absolutely amazing—serving us all day with patience, kindness, and a constant smile. The food was fantastic, the music was great, and the football games kept everyone entertained. THANK YOU to everyone who made our unexpected snow day so memorable—especially Izzy! It was truly exceptional.
Awesome place to eat and hang out. The food was great, the drinks were great, the atmosphere is perfect, and the company couldn't have been better. 3 of us had dinner here and time flew by. The fireplace kept us warm, the waitress was always checking in on us and it was such a great time. The fireplace was perfect with for cold weather too. I had an old fashioned and buffalo chicken tenders. If I came back to eat here I would do that exact combo again and maybe add the fries too because they looked incredible.
Plough and the Stars holds a special place in my heart. Over summers and winters I’ve found a warm atmosphere here with new friends and old. The staff are the heart of the neighborhood. JohnJoe and Ruarie are staples. The food and the drinks are good, steak and eggs are a perfect brunch. The atmosphere is the most special thing about Plough and the Stars however. It’s warm like the cracking hearth and Christmas lights, like the Celtic fiddle music and the bartender’s laugh. You will not regret spending hours here, it will be time well spent. CHEERS!
We used this restaurant has a pre-show dinner. It was convenient to our theater. The service was super fast. The food was quite good. We did not have any alcohol. We shared a main dish and an appetizer. The price for a younger couple who each had a main dish would have probably been in the the $50 to $60 range for the two of them. It is a somewhat noisy restaurant, especially on a Sunday evening when they have an Irish style band playing. However, we were able to hear each other talking at the table that we were given. Had not
Warm, cozy Irish pub with good food and service. The shepherds pie was tasty, it would be even better if it had a bit more seasoning/flavor. The chicken tenders were super juicy, however the fries were pretty lackluster. I can appreciate a hand cut fry, but they weren’t crispy enough.
I’m going to keep this review short and sweet: Basically I loved it! I definitely recommend this place. The food was super good and the service wasn’t bad. The ambience was nice and it was clean. I ordered the pasta and it’s delicious! Great sauce. Others things I recommend is the calamari, french fries, grilled cheese, shrimp cocktail, and the wings. 2nd time coming here and still not disappointed even after a couple years of not attending. It still lives up to its expectations. Drinks were great, also. Great for kids and great for not with kids. I loved it! I will definitely be coming back. 👍👍
The atmosphere at the Plough & the Stars was vibrant and cheerful. The live Irish music filled the space. Our waiter was attentive and courteous. I ordered the Fish & Chips. The fries were overcooked, and I didn't eat them. However, the fish and the homemade tartar sauce were very good. Oh, but the best thing was dessert. The Toffee Apple Bread Puddin's a la Mode, a fancy name for an apple pudding lol, was incredibly delicious!! In fact, it was so perfectly done that I'll go back just to eat that pudding again! 😋🍎🥧
We went for Saturday brunch. My wife and I were the first customers of the day, arriving as they opened. Immediate attention was great, but I did have to go find our waitress at one point to get salt and pepper. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was comfortable (if the music was a little loud for a brunch setting).
The Shepherds Pie (Note: beef not lamb) was a taste sensation after a week of fried food in other bars! Beer selection not as extensive as other nearby places.
The food was delicious! Salmon and shrimp is delicious, Shepard pie was great. Burger was a burger, but good and large size. There is parking on the street. You pay with an app.
Thoroughly enjoy The Plough & the Stars every visit. The food & drinks fit the bill. The atmosphere is great and the staff are courteous. The atmosphere and set-up is more along the lines of a typical gastro pub than you may associate with an Irish pub or restaurant, but it still works. The staff has been pleasant and knowledgeable each time. The wait staff knows the menu and can speak to dishes, the hostesses are always fast & friendly, and the bar staff does a great job with the drinks. The chicken curry is enjoyable and has some nice spice to it. It is tamer than an Indian curry and distinctly an Irish (or British) curry. The sauce is good and works well for a dipping your chips (French fries) as well. The Shepard's Pie is good, even if it actually is a Cottage Pie not Shepard's Pie since it's made with beef. As long as it is well executed it's hard to go wrong with meat & potatoes with a rich sauce, and this is definitely executed well. Drinks were just a Guinness and Black Velvet (think Black & Tan, but sub cider for the lager), but they worked well with the meal. Very happy with our night here. Definitely will continue to visit.
Love the vibes. the limes however….. not good. please get fresher limes. Please. Izzy Murphy my server slayed. Please give her a raise. Meow purr xx
The service and atmosphere was incredible. We went to this location twice during our stay. The first time we had to sit down launch the food was typical bar food. Many of us had our burgers medium however they arrived almost rear. The salad and fries were delicious and were the highlight of many of our orders. Drinks were not cold that more than likely was due to the amount of people that were in the restaurant on both occasions, especially our second occasion however the staff was super friendly and energetic and always checking in on our party that varied between 8 to 15 people we had both indoor and outdoor seating for our two separate times. The outdoor seating was fantastic because we were able to enjoy the activities on the street the indoor seating was great for the live band that they had.
Super happy. Food was great, big portions, all very good. Some of the best fish and chips we have had (and I’m in England several times a year). Sunday roast ribeye was delicious. Cocktail menu had a great selection, and any place with a whiskey flight gets high marks. Definitely worth a stop. Even had a live Irish band. A lively atmosphere without being too loud.
Drinks were good. We had the Manhattan. Service was decent. We actually went for the food. They had a saffron isotto with mushroom, seared scallops and a blackened salmon. The risotto was slightly underdone. There was no mushrooms. Instead we got a piece of steamed cauliflower with a piece of red pepper. The salmon was a bit dry and the scallops were not seared. I cut the scallops and it was under done. I spoke with the waitress and she got the manager. She took these back to the kitchen and brought out more. These were burnt and over cooked. I didn't bother to eat any more of the scallops. The manager comped us the drinks. Maybe their standard menu is better; this was a special. Being a pub is was noisy but it seemed like people were having a good time so I'll give them that.
I don't like giving shite reviews but I don't get the high reviews on this spot after my experience. I'll try again but I'm skeptical. Service was awful, Guinness pour was very mediocre, and for an Irish bar, that's a bummer. The food was very mid. Honestly, would have been very good airplane food but that's about it. The pictures on here of the Guinness casserole looked amazing... Maybe they've changed their ways, but what we got was not like the pictures and was very bleak. I'll give it another go since we're in the area but man, this did not meet expectations.
