Might be one of the best services I’ve received and I’m truly grateful for it. Shoutout to Yancy, really showed class and how to take care of customers. 10/10 experience. I literally stopped by because I got a smog test down the block and was in the mood for steak. From the start the service was amazing and I truly felt welcomed. They explained to me the lunch, dinner, drink, and dine LA menu. Since I was new and the dine la menu was for a limited time seemed like a great value option to taste a bit of everything. To start I got a old fashioned and let my waiter Yancy select the whiskey, he picked Woodford Reserve. Great choice, was a super tasty old fashioned and something I would order exact the same. To eat since I went with the dine LA lunch option I got house salad, red cabbage, cheese bread, 5oz filet mignon, baked potato, and key lime tart. All that food for $35, but I will 100% return and eat even without the special menu. It’s hard to truly put into words but all the food felt clean. They make there own ranch, use a real melted cheddar block, fresh sour cream. It’s real food, simple as that. My personal favorite was the cheese bread with red cabbage on top, that was memorable. The food was delicious, atmosphere was delightful, and the service was beyond amazing. This is a MUST TRY!
Amazing place, unique flavors. I love coming here and have been since the early 90s. The steak, the red cabbage. I really love the salads... the cheese sauce for the potatoes. Its all mind blowing really. Its a must go to if you're wanting a good steak. I would say its one of my favorite places to go.
The steaks are great. Like the prime rib & ribeye.. baked potatoe onion rings.. and they also have a live band. Great variety of drinks. Its our 4th time going & it won't be our last..
Didn't realize it had been years since I have enjoyed Steak and Stein and haven't posted a review and there are a few things to report as changed. First Kudis for surviving a pandemic. Many icons in the neighborhood didn’t survive. The first obvious change is curb appeal. Some modest improvements with flower beds, lighting, and walkway paths from the parking. One primary entry towards the front - I will get back to that in a bit. The old bar has been remodeled. There used to be a little side dining area, a bar in the middle, and a lounge area by the vintage fireplace. Well no more- now you walk a small waiting hall to the hostess desk. Be careful it will be dark so if you have sunglasses on or it's bright outside give yourself some time to adjust. Otherwise, you may bump into a guest. To the left is a larger dinning area with a music stage - so consider that the lounge area for date nights. The bar is in the middle with a counter and a few high stools. By the fireplace, it's now all the dining area. I would guess that the new config optimizes the number of available tables for full-on dining. Service is still warm classsy and friendly. Ashley was a great host. Now the food. No downgrades in the quality of the ribe eye. Our absolute favorite here. Cheesebread is classic. Now the salad. Iceberg lettuce, crisp and fresh, with crunchy croutons. But the best is the dressings. Blue cheese, Ranch, and Fench. Here is my suggestion, mix in some of the purple cabbage salad and then smother with blue cheese dressing. Yum yum. Don’t go over medium on your steak. Trust the chef. I just love that you can make reservations online which helps with wait times. So not only did they survive Pandemic they improved and bumped up my rating to 5 stars. Way to go.
Steak 'N Stein is classic, old school vibes and great food! I've gone twice and both meals were enjoyable. Their salad is delicious BECAUSE of the dressings! The blue cheese and house dressings are thiccc and rich. Definitely not healthy but mighty tasty! Save the dressings to dip your fried onions in! The red cabbage salad is a great side. Bright and slightly acidic. Ask for more when your streaks come. It helps offset the richness. And they give you buttery cheese bread! Need I say more!? First time there I had the boneless rib eye medium rare. It was seasoned well and juicy. The second time I order the 9oz. top sirloin with grilled shrimp. The top sirloin was cooked to my liking. Medium rare. It was lacking seasoning and was a little dry despite being medium rare. Still tasty but should have ordered a NY syrup strip or rib eye. Their monstrous potatoes and crispy onions are spot on! They cut your baked potato table side. Tell them how much butter you want. Then they add sour cream, green onions and CHEESE SAUCE! Come enjoy the untouched, old school ambiance and classic steak house menu. It's way better than North Woods Inn.
Clearman's Steak and Stein Restaurant offers a truly unique dining experience with its cool and captivating atmosphere. The ambiance is dark and mysterious, creating the perfect setting for an unforgettable night out. What really sets this place apart is the theatrical presentation of their dishes — every time they bring out a new course, it feels like a show, complete with dramatic fire displays that add excitement and flair. Whether you're a steak lover or just looking for a memorable night, Clearman's promises a dining experience that’s both delicious and visually spectacular. Highly recommended!
Been coming here for years. Thank you for not letting the quality go down. Steak and shrimp were cooked to perfection. Everything was great here. Make a reservation
It was my first time here, but my friends go here on a regular. It's a great place to dine while listening/ watching live music. We love who played tonight, but unfortunately we didn't get his name. He played a variety of music really well. As for the food, the salmon and the steak was delicious. I think the food is slightly overpriced compared to other places I've tried, in my opinion. The onion rings & garlic toast that was included in our entrée was very delicious. We especially liked the sour cream and chive salad dressing as well. As for the service, given that you're paying an average of $45 per person, you kinda expect the basics to be covered. It would be nice if they refilled or asked if we needed more water. We didn't know if they served deserts since we weren't offered any. Other than that, it was a nice experience.
I love this place but I hate sitting in the dark that you can't see what you are eating. But the food and service is wonderful. Nice people. Just reconfigured the sesting area and bar... but lighting is still an issue in some of their seating. Small place that looks so big too from the outside.
Started off at the bar with an Old Fashoined while waiting for the rest of the party. Service was great, our waitress handled the group great and gave attention to every individual. Food was perfect.
There was a bit of a wait here, but it was totally worth it for one of my top 10 steaks I've had (New York strip, fyi). The server was very attentive, and the time till I got my food was remarkably short. They had amazing fried bread, the salad was crisp and flavorful, the onion rings were nicely breaded, and their potato took "loaded" to a whole new level. In hindsight, I may have passed on the cheese sauce on the potato, but only because literally everything else was so rich. In summary, this meal packed a whole week of flavor in one excellent serving.
First time here celebrating our 32nd anniversary. Everything was great. I especially loved the atmosphere. Dim lighting, a water fountain. So peaceful. The Manager, Casey, was visiting each table introducing himself as the new Manager. Super nice and took his time with each one. A real people-person. Our server, Nicole, was great and super sweet. All staff was very attentive to everyone and were very pleasant. Will definitely brag about it and visit again. Awesome guys. Keep up the great work😁💜
Only giving 3 stars for atmosphere, not because it's not lonely. It's just to dark for me. Maybe some brighter lights on the tables for us to choose if we want it brighter. I have trouble seeing as it is. But it is a beautiful place.
We decided to do Mother’s Day on Saturday night. They were very busy but we were able to snag some seats at the bar. The new bar area is beautiful with plenty of room. We enjoy a lovely dinner and drinks. Edger and Matt were very helpful with question we had about the menu. Drinks we great food was delicious. We will absolutely be going back.
I went here for my birthday dinner and it was Awesome!! Such a beautiful atmosphere, Wow! I had the king crab legs and filet minion. It was so good! The filet cut like butter and was so tasty. They had live music that was great. Everything about this place was well worth the cost. The service was fantastic! She was on top of her job. Well done. I will be back.
This restaurant is the reason I won't become a vegetarian! The restaurant is dimly lit, with white tablecloths and napkins. The ambiance has remained the same since my first visit here, in 1983. This restaurant does not disappoint. My favorite is the filet mignon and let me suggest combining the sour cream dressing with a bit of French dressing! Yum! I prefer sitting in the main dinning room and if you arrive around 5:00 pm, seating is not a problem. You can also make reservations. Two thumbs up for quality of food and service!
Celebrated dinner here tonight. Fernando our waiter was nice and took care of everything we requested! The birthday honoree definitely wants to have dinner here again 🍾🥂🎂🥳
As someone who eats here about once or twice a month I beg you to bring back the old fries. I’m not going to deduct a star because I love this place so much. But…yesterday when the overly fried skinny fries came out I was sooo disappointed. If I’m getting steak I want the thick steak fries. Too many places are changing their menu to cut costs but I promise you the audience doesn’t want these fries. I love you guys deeply. Please reevaluate this decision.
You will not leave this place hungry! Your meal includes a green salad, cheese bread, a side of red cabbage salad, a HUGE baked potato with all the trimmings and onion rings. It's a bit pricey but you definitely get your money's worth. Service was great, the hostesses we're very pleasant and our server Evan was great. Pleasant, made sure we had all we needed and smiled, I love it when people smile. Thank you Evan. If all the food was not enough, we ordered dessert. I ordered their Carrot cake...i got a 3lb slice 😉 it looked and felt like it, but it was so yummy! Could not finish it, so I'll have dessert for the next three days. A great experience over all!
This place is a Los Angeles institution! The old style decor brings such a sense of old charm in a city that’s filled with changing menus. I’m guessing the items on these menus have been here for decades! The food portions are huge!!! They serve prime rib only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Luckily we ate there on a Sunday! I started off with a half liter of house red wine. (You get your choice of a glass, half liter, or full liter.) The meals include salad with your choice of dressing (blue cheese, ranch or French), the infamous cheese toast, red cabbage, and baked potato with all the toppings (butter, sour cream, melted cheese and chives). My prime rib came with creamed spinach, and some condiments of creamy horse radish and Au jus. My partner ordered the steak and shrimp combo, where you could order the shrimp grilled or fried. We celebrated my birthday so our server came out with a big glass of ice cream with a candle on top, and the dessert was on the house! Whenever I think of a special dinner, this place is always top of my list!
Our server Destiny was amazing! We hadn't been in 2 years so seeing the remodel of the bar and dining area was a great surprise. Great job!
We were there today for my daughter's birthday. I've been coming to this restaurant for a few years now. I'm never disappointed with there service. Especially today Sarah our waitress was so attentive, patience and had excellent customer service. Everyone there is so professional. The food, cocktails, music etc is excellent. We love Steak & Stein.
Bomb! So bomb… they accept reservations too. Lots of people have their birthdays here. They have coffee too btw just fyi. There’s some affordable steak dish options too around 35’ish, might be ground steak (but it’s listed as a favorite) I’ve had the rib eye twice, so bomb! Cheese bread that comes with it bomb. Experience 5 stars, thank you!
Great place for drinks and dinner. I went on a Saturday night and they had live music. The classic lounge speakeasy theme gives off a relaxing vibe. The food is amazing and reasonably priced. Perfect for a date or a celebration
Extremely expensive and absolutely worth it. I've been about 6 times and the food is great and plentiful... Service is nearly perfect each time . Very romantic...
It was our first time at Clear man's Steak n Stein and we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, great service and the food, OMG, best steak I've ever had. It helps when you start with grade A steaks. My wife and I will definitely be back.
Had not been here since before the pandemic... completely remodeled... same great atmosphere, impeccable service and fantastic food!
This was a perfect place for a celebration of life, we made reservations online for 2:15pm, got there and was sedated right away, shortly after being seated, the staff catered to us, respectfully and professionally. The food was awesome, great portions. Well worth the memory that was created. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The service was top-notch, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was cooked perfectly. Every dish came out hot, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The steak was tender and seasoned just right. The atmosphere was great and made the whole night even better. Definitely one of the best steakhouse experiences I’ve had and I’ll 100% be coming back.
We had an incredible experience at Clearman’s Steakhouse thanks to our amazing waiter, Edwin. His service was truly top-notch from start to finish. He had a great sense of urgency without ever making us feel rushed, and he made sure we always had everything we needed — including plenty of that delicious cheese bread we love! The food was amazing as always, and Edwin made the experience even better with his professionalism, kindness, and attention to detail. We’ve been coming here for years, and Edwin is easily one of the best servers we’ve ever had. He really elevated our night. Highly recommend asking for him!
Matt the Bartender/Waiter was amazing on 11/24/2025. He was attentive, informative, very pleasant. He makes an outstanding Raspberry Lemon Drop. All staff were friendly. Food very flavorful and large portions. I highly recommend and looking forward to dining here again.
Clearman’s is a great steakhouse option when you're craving steak but don’t want to make the long drive or spend over $100 on a meal. It’s reasonably priced and fills the gap left by a mid-priced restaurant I used to frequent before its quality declined. On this visit, I ordered the NY strip. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a miss—the steak was tougher than expected and cooked closer to medium or medium-well, despite my request for medium rare. That said, the baked potato was excellent and definitely a highlight. One thing I really appreciate about Clearman’s is that they include several sides with the meal: a salad, red cabbage, baked potato, and onion rings—all without the typical à la carte pricing. While this visit wasn’t perfect, Clearman’s still hits the spot when I want a solid steakhouse experience without the premium price tag or long drive. I’ll definitely return. Service was also great.
definitely need to go back. there was a lot of food. this place has allot of character, and nostalgia. there's a place to step into a previous era that keeps the quality and atmosphere, and this is one of those places. Lavender was great, and the service was top notch. i want to try their prime rib, as it's only Friday thru Sunday. the sheer volume of food; never go unless you're on an empty stomach and missed the meal before. Buddy was ordering an orange Julius martini. tasty and the vodka wasn't tasted but it was felt. first time for me, ended up having a couple more. the rib eye was well cooked, and i should have asked for some of the au jus. i enjoyed it, but I'm still looking forward to their prime rib. round two is coming. you can bet on it.
Potatoes have SHRUNK over the years. Onion ring batter has become sticky and heavy.
I’ve heard a lot of great things about the food at this place, but I can only slightly agree. When it comes to steak I like it medium rare and to cut like butter, but this steak was very tough to cut. It did come out, medium rare, but the outside of the steak was burnt. The lobster was so good, I would definitely get it again. The sides were moderate in taste.
My wife and I have been coming here for over forty years but have not dined since 2024 because of the changes to loud music and being sat in the former lobby. We decided to come on New Years Eve for lunch but were pleasantly surprised that they were serving dinner at one PM. The food has not changed. My filet was delicious, unfortunately my wife’s prime rib was horrible; surprised it was served. A big shout out to our waiter, Francis. Such a professional. He knew the subtleties between letting the diners enjoy and rushing them. Truly a gentleman. I don’t know how it took so long to meet him.
Classic steakhouse charm with generous portions. Probably the best steakhouse in this area, truly old-school American style. The atmosphere has that nostalgic charm, and the portions are huge! The steak was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The rest of the food was okay, not as memorable as the main dish, but still enjoyable. Great place if you’re craving a hearty, traditional steakhouse experience.
the food is always really good and consistent. the general manager, wendy, is very friendly and genuinely cares about her customers. miguel is one of the best servers here and always takes such great care of my family and i. the only reason i am giving 4 out of 5 stars is that the host staff could be a little more welcoming and friendly. overall, the food and the servers here are amazing.
Hello everyone. Welcome to Clearman's Steak House. This is a wonderful place for a night out. There's a bar and live music while you wait for your table or food. There's plenty of parking and a short drive from the 605 freeway. The food portions are very generous. For my visit, I ordered the Clearman's combination. The baked potatoe, onion rings, and fried calamari were wonderful. I did not care for the broiled chicken, it was dry 😒 and burnt. I ordered the steak rare and received it well done. The waitress was kind enough to replace the steak. Quality for price, I think 🤔 not. Thank you everyone for reading my review. Please follow me on Google maps and check out the places I visit.
Decided to come have lunch here, after work. Walked inside, plenty seating available to have a nice, quiet lunch. Ordered off the dinner menu. For myself I ordered the Chilean sea bass & asked if it came w/capers, when my plate came out, I noticed the fish was cold & no capers. Brought it to the servers attention & she said, that the cook had just notified her that they were all out of capers, but she never told me anything! Until I noticed! Felt like she was blaming others & walking on eggshells for her mistake. She asked if she can get me another piece of fish, but by this time I was already uncomfortable & ready to leave. At least the hubby had a good meal with his filet Mignon. Also did not appreciate being told I was going to starve because I wasn't ordering another fish. I probably won't visit this location anymore. We love the Galley & Northwoods.
So, it's not a bad steakhouse. As long as you know what your getting into. Steak n stein is a nostalgic place. The decor is reminiscent to 1950's steakhouse. Its dark, old decor, carpet flooring, cheese paintings. There's even a water fountain in the middle of a dining room. Upon entering the first room is filled with smoke. It's mostly from the kitchen, as it's a smoke free environment. But you walk in and it's dimly lit and you see smoke hovering around the lamps. We got there at 725 on a Saturday night for our 730 reservations. I read other reviews that said they had to wait and so did we. It was a 20-30min wait before we got seated. The place was packed, so I get it. The service was good, the waiter was friendly and attentative. The tables are pretty close to each other. They serve the food via carts, so it was funny to see the staff struggling to get by pushing the carts through narrow passages. They start you off with house salad (just lettuce and some croutons) with three dressings and chopped red cabbage and looks like sliced loaf bread, that they turn into garlic buttered bread. It was good. So bottom line we did not get to enjoy our meal at the restaurant because for a 730 Reservation we didn't get our meal until 9pm. We had my 1yr old daughter with us, and it was way pasted her bed time. She started to get really cranky. So it's our fault for putting her through that. But we didn't expect the dinner to take that long. I figured 1hr tops. Be home by 830-9pm. But not in this case. So we had to get our food to go. The manager was nice and apologized for the wait and inconvenience. They even gave us a discount. Which I appreciated. But, to be honest if you plan on going to dinner her, expect it to be a long dinner, especially on a busy night like a Saturday. I mean, it is what it is. You would have a nice time with friends and family at this place if your expectations aren't to high. The meat was good. I got a bone in rib eye, my wife a filet mignon. The filet had a nice char, was tender, but not very juicy. My rib eye had a decent char as everything is flame grilled. But it's missing the crust from a pan skillet. But it comes down to preference. Since I was home, I just threw the rib eye on my skillet added butter and gave it a even crust to my preference. It was still a good medium rare-ish steak. But as I said before. It's a nostalgic steakhouse, with black Angus or another 90s chain restaurant steaks. Don't expect a mastros, Boa, 71 above or Beverly hills, DTLA, New port, Costa mesa steak house, even though the price can be close, lol. Oh, don't get thier stein steak, it's literally just ground beef grilled. Your ordering a hamburger. Also read the menu, I read reviews of people really bashing this place. But it's thier fault for not reading. The information is out there. Know what your getting into. My 2 cents. 🫡
This was the first time we enjoyed dinner at Clearman's Steak 'N Stein. We celebrated our friends 40th anniversary and they chose the spot. The food was excellent especially the cheesy bread . My wife and I shared the Ribeye with grilled shrimp. There was a $8 or $9 split charge but I believe it was for an extra salad( something I've heard of but have never been charged at any other restaurant) The service was good but not great and the I was not a fan of the atmosphere. The restaurant is where too dark, you need a flashlight to read the menu. Our total bill with tip was about $105. We would go again probably with the same friends. But if you check out my Google guides page you will see we enjoy food at many restaurants that are a better value with the same or better quality food.
Anniversary lunch, weekend prime rib. I’ve eaten at other Clearmans restaurants so most these comments are about this location. Food was what we have historically expected and pretty good for mid priced steakhouse. Only exception was famous cheese bread which was pretty soggy not crisp and no soup was available to replace salad (I cannot eat lettuce physically). Service however was pretty poor, starting with no hostess. Seemed like a young staff not trained in finer service “old school” restaurants (like expected here). Menus dropped, 10 min later now we can order. Seasonal beer not available but … waitress nice enough, but got bothered 10 min into meal we met every member of the staff asking if we were done yet (separately of course). For the price paid and seeing the restaurant was half empty, this was not acceptable (experience there was food I was actively eating on my plate). For $100+ with two people I expected much more. I grew up in the La area, so Clearmans is definately a trip down memory lane, this I’ll likely be back. But my expectations were much higher based on previous experiences.
Location:Okay, Parking:Good, Service: Okay, Lunch Menu; Yes, Presentation: Missing. Issues with meals: yes, Overall: This Clearman's restaurant has been around for decades, and it is a favorite for many. But in the case of our party of 8, that was no longer the issue, as three of the dishes had problems, which is unfortunate but still fixable for future patrons. The three dishes that were not well received were fish dishes. All 3 ( 1 Halibut, 2 Mahimahi) were so dry that even tarter sauce could not save them. I don't know if they cooked the fish the same as the steaks, but something was off. At first, the restaurant was going to leave us hanging until one of our party spoke with management on the issue. Then the matter was somewhat resolved, I hope this is a fluke for a large party and will be adjusted. I know fish cooks fast and needs to be cooked last prior to sending out. So, for a restaurant with a history of making good food, you would think this should not happen. So for today 2 Stars
Food and service has taken a significant step back!! Steaks are not top quality as well as service! Even the new bartenders are not top notch!!
I was expecting to see pretty much like birth woods Inn I’ve ate there many times and steak n stein is within their branch so I expected pretty much the same. Nope.. the inside is clean and the ambiance seems to be more upper scale it’s nice and our server was extremely nice however here’s are the takeaways…. 1. It’s extremely cold inside the building. I’m not talking cooler than mist I’m talking egg section in Costco cold. 2. The food come out on a cart everything uncovered sitting on plates except the steak which is on some kind of grill they Lauren up at your table. 3. My son ordered the halibut his plate sat on the cart while the grill was being lit to wow me I guess with a fire grilled steak Mind you the steak was already cooked in the back. So that’s confusing to me. 4. The server then opens your baked potato without asking me if I want paprika on mine puts it on there. He dressed the potato at the table for you. 5. The food is cold when you finally get it. The butter did not melt into the potato the steak was cold and I felt really bad for my son who ordered the halibut because as fish gets cold it gets rubbery which is was. It was our first time there would I go back?? No. If you’ve ever read my reviews I tell you straight up how it truthfully is. I did not complain as I was there to enjoy my son and catch up I don’t get much time with my kids so every moment with them I treasure. If you’re looking for a good steak save yourself the disappointment go to north woods inn. Remember steak n stein only if you want to pay to eat in a refrigerator and your food super cold. Plus the menu should say you’re paying for the ambience. I know I will never go again. My almost 200 for lunch ( which I can afford ) would have been worth it had it not been freezing all the way around.
We had to leave after waiting an xtended period for a table due to the high volume of noise. We both wear hearing aids. Seated once, very noisy, asked for a quieter seat, seated a second time and couldn’t hear ourselves or waitress ! Noise level was unbearable! We got up and walked out! This was supposed to be an 85th birthday celebration! We were very disappointed! We came in for the lobster dinner. Website said $75, menu said $129! Can’t believe people could sit in that atmosphere, spend that much money and endure that noise!
All the food was cold when served to our table. We notified the waiter, and he said he'd get the manager but never did. We were offered a free desert but declined. Then, we waited about 10 min before we had to flag down another waiter just to get our check. Unfortunate evening for my wifes birthday, my family has been coming here since the 1980s. This restaurant used to be the epitome of excellent service and exceptional food. Now, it seems to have fallen into the category of an overpriced steak house with sub-par service. The staff used to go above and beyond to ensure an unforgettable dining experience. These days, not so much.
It Was so awful! We drove almost three hours to be served "cold steak, lobster, and crab legs." Even the onion rings served on the side, also were cold right when served. Honestly all of it had no warmth! Only the Potato!! The manager never came out after being told by the waiter, "supposably" The server offered a free dessert, ..since it was my birthday he said.. he seemed annoyed we were complaining. yet never came back to serve it. We had to wave down a hostess to get us the check. A $400 dollar dinner, That they never offered to fix the meal we came so far to eat. I was so hungry I decided to at least eat half of a very cold steak and one crab leg served with my steak. ( it use to be two large WARM king crab legs with WARM butter on the side- now low quality!) It was so gross. My poor daughter ate her lobster cold . The butter served with our sea food was cold. Steak Cold and no flavor-Just the worst experience. I am so disappointed.
I was there today with a friend to enjoy a good steak. I ordered a filet mignon, when my plate came out I went right to it. It was tough to cut and the meat was chewy. I complained to my waitress and nothing was done about it. She actually blamed me for how I ordered it which I thought was insulting , I ate one slice and spit the half on my napkin .left the steak alone and ate my sides and I will never go to this place again for a steak.
