My husband and I had such a wonderful time at From Scratch. The space is cozy and we had an excellent culinary experience. We ordered the arancini as an appetizer, a lasagna and truffle cream rigatoni and a tiramisu. All the ingredients were fresh and truly felt homemade. We got to see our tiramisu get assembled right in front of us and the cream was made fresh on the spot. It was incredible and delicious. The family who owns the establishment was also so kind and welcoming. Highly recommend. One of the best restaurants in NJ for sure!
Last week, my husband and I attended Claudia's cooking class, and we've been raving about it ever since. Claudia was delightful, and together we prepared three pasta dishes and a dessert—all of which were fantastic! We wholeheartedly recommend it! Plus, we enjoyed some wine and had a wonderful time with a fantastic group of people!
The food here is incredible. The care and creativity which Claudia takes in her creations is genuine and masterful. Her and her husband, Roberto, are truly dedicated artisans. The menu rotates often to keep the selection new and adventurous. Claudia uses a wide variety of ingredients, many of which you may have never had. The staff is impeccable in their knowledge of the dishes and their presentation of the service. If there is ANYWHERE in the North Jersey area you go to eat, go here. You must make reservations, so don’t forget to plan ahead and bring a bottle of wine with you. Thank you Claudia, Roberto and all the staff at From Scratch!
My company hosted a private event at From Scratch and the overall experience was excellent! The food, a five course home-cooked Italian meal, was absolutely delicious. Each course somehow managed to outdo the last. The staff was incredible. We met ahead of time to discuss the menu options and they definitely delivered and exceeded expectations. I would highly recommend the restaurant for both a regular night out or for a private event! You will not leave disappointed! 5 stars all around!
The staff is very nice and helpful and friendly Food is made from scratch real authentic Italian food.
Very wonderful place. Pasta was outstanding. Owners are from Rome - so they know how to do it right. The only reason that this didn't get 5 stars from me is that for an upscale Italian place like this, I would expect bread to be served prior to the meal. Otherwise it was perfect! Edit - they now serve wonderful bread so I updated my review to 5 stars, well deserved this place is great!
Highly recommend this restaurant. The food is amazing! Believe me you will not be disappointed.
Looks so small and unimportant but boy are you in for a surprise! Food is DELICIOUS!!! Any dish we tried was absolutely amazing!!! The best one for me and others that tried my dish.. and few did.. was finger-licking best, white truffle lasagna! Once you try it, you won't want any other lasagna ANYWHERE else, unless you are in Italy! The deserts were also to die for! Make a reservation, and you can thank me later ;)
We enjoyed take out meals and they were delicious! The best take out restaurant around!
This is a family owned business that has went to great lengths in perfecting their craft. Special thank you to Fil for providing me with one of the best meals I’ve had in the United States. I wish the From Scratch family tremendous success, and recommend you try their food next time you are in town!
If you want to try some real Italian food then you must come to From Scratch. The pastas are amazing and the lasagna’s are so delicious!!! If you come to From Scratch I can assure you that you will leave very happy and satisfied. The owners are super kind and friendly. 10/10
delicious pasta!! pretty pricey for the amount though, my bf got the ravioli and it was delicious but quite small. overall though it was yummy and i want to go back and try other menu items!
Great food, attentive staff, casual and fun environment. My wife and I came for our anniversary and had a great time -- authentic high quality food in a laid back setting.
Unbelievable experience!!! Everything is super fresh and prepared "From Scratch' Lasagna alla bolognese the best I ever had and the eggplant parmigiana was an explosion of flavors All the dessert are homemade I live in Italy and so far the best Italian meal I got in the US Service was perfect and even if the place is very small the ambience was very nice The owners are always there and they really care about their customer The chef is amazing and very polite and sweet she used to come to your table and be sure you are really enjoying your meal The e whole experience has been wonderful and I highly recommend "From Scratch"
My visit to From Scratch restaurant in Ridgewood was a delightful experience marked by wonderful hospitality. The servers were exceptionally kind and courteous, making me feel welcomed and well-cared for. The food was excellent, as always. I had the carbonara, which is my classic go-to dish at From Scratch, though I occasionally opt for the lasagna. Filippo was incredibly helpful in my decision-making process and consistently checked to ensure all my needs were met. This level of service truly enhanced my dining experience.
I had the pleasure of dining at this Italian restaurant, and it was an unforgettable experience! The lasagna bolognese was a true masterpiece—fresh, delicate pasta with a rich, flavorful ragù that melted in your mouth. The tiramisu was divine—creamy, with the perfect balance of coffee and cocoa. The owner, a young man with a rare kindness, made the experience even more special. His passion for the food and his warm hospitality made us feel right at home. Highly recommend this place for an authentic Italian meal in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere!
Delicious authentic Italian food, great hospitality from this family ran business! Bravo Chef
If fresh authentic homemade pasta is what you crave, this is the place to go. Food is delicious and of high quality. You can taste that everything is authenticly Italian homemade with love and care. It's a limited menu but that is how they can put out such high quality. Prices are not cheap but worth it for the quality and execution. It's a small place with only few tables but we went for lunch and not a problem getting a table. BTW, it's a BYOB
We just left and what a delicious meal my family just had. We ordered the Branzino and it was out of this world. My son order the pasta carbonara and if he could have he would have licked the bowl. My husband ordered the lasagna bolognese and he raved about it. We really didn’t have room for dessert but I saw they just baked a Nutella pie so we couldn’t resist a piece to share . My son also ordered the tiramisu and loved it. So happy we decided to stop for dinner. It was packed and they do accept reservations. BYOB I highly recommend trying this place. Very cozy and excellent service .
Dining at From Scratch feels like being transported straight to the heart of Italy. Chef Claudia and her family operate like a fine orchestra — every dish, every detail, perfectly in sync. The flavors are authentic, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the love they put into their food is unmistakable. It's more than a meal; it's an experience steeped in tradition, care, and culinary excellence. A must-visit for anyone who craves true Italian soul in every bite!
A local fave that we frequent often. Lovely family owned business with house made pasta and incredible specials. One of our favorite places in Ridgewood.
I love this place. Hard to get reservations, which also explains how good it is. I recommend going there on Saturday during day. They are open and we were lucky to just walk in and be seated.
The food was fantastic I highly recommend. First time eating carbonara and it knocked my socks off. We had the special apple dessert which was to die for as well as the meatballs
Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We started with the burrata appetizer, which was incredibly fresh and bursting with flavor—a perfect way to begin the meal. I also had the carbonara, and it was outstanding—rich, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully prepared. The service was equally impressive; the staff were warm, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. Overall, a fantastic dining experience!!
I don’t throw the word “perfect” around often, but From Scratch in Ridgewood has completely earned it. From the very first bite to the last spoonful of dessert, everything was fresh, flavorful, and unforgettable. The pasta and meatballs? Incredible. The pasta tasted like it was made moments before hitting the plate — tender, delicate, and perfectly al dente. And those meatballs? Juicy, well-seasoned, and melt-in-your-mouth good. You can taste the love and care that went into every single bite. And let’s talk about the desserts. Just when I thought the meal couldn’t get better, the desserts arrived and blew me away. Light, fresh, and not overly sweet — exactly how authentic Italian dessert should be. Every bite was a “wow” moment. If you’re looking for a place that truly lives up to its name, From Scratch is it. Already dreaming about my next visit!
Let me just say, wow! I ordered the gricia, a pasta dish with cacio e Pepe sauce and guanciale on top and it blew me away! The ambience was quiet and warm, and you felt like you were the only ones there which is great for a date. The service was that of a Michelin star restaurant. They gave us bread and oil in the beginning which was a nice touch. They also went ahead and put flowers on our table which made my date super happy. Overall, I’m very impressed with this place. There are true authentic Italian dishes here and it took me back to when I was in Rome eating cacio e Pepe. Does not compare to these other restaurants that claim they are “authentic Italian.” Highly recommend. (Ps all dishes and recipes are homemade by the chef and owner)
Went here for dinner and had an amazing experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Our waitress, Valentina, was fantastic — attentive, kind, and made great recommendations. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. You can really tell they care about what they do. Definitely coming back!
Went to this restaurant yesterday with my wife for a try. Im italian born and raised in italy and I know how real italian Food tastes like. Well , I felt home . Food was phenomenal. Claudia the chef did great job with the dishes, and Filippo the son was very welcoming and he did great service. We had tartare di tonno, pasta cacio e pepe, and my wife went with the cartoccio di branzino. A the end we got tiramisu al pistacchio and claudia's pie with ricotta and nutella. Everything was delicious, not to salty. We will definitely going back . Grazie Pietro
Attenzione! Freshest pasta I have ever had outside of Italy! Let’s start from the the spotless interiors with open kitchen concept, but let’s face it, the star here is Chef Claudia’s food. This humble, unassuming eatery serves up the most mouthwatering, fresh and transcending Italian dishes, that it sets the bar head and shoulders above the norm. Everything pictured was outstanding! From the focaccia di recca con speck, tonnarelli cacio e pepe and the delicious ricotta Nutella pie, a “Must have” topped off with two heart shortbread cookies from Chef Claudia herself. You could taste in every dish prepared the love and passion put into it. Lastly, the service was warm, genuine and attentive. DO NOT PASS From Scratch up. Note to bring your own wine as only Italian soft drinks are served. Make it next on your list, I know I’ll definitely be back and soon.
Strabiliante. The best Italian food I have ever had. The chef Claudia is absolutely brilliant. The Lasagna alla Bolognese was perfection, as was the Ricotta and Nutella pie. The service was top notch and the owners are the most wonderful people. It is a nice calm and atmosphere inside the restaurant. In my opinion, it is the best restaurant in Ridgewood and a place that everyone needs to visit.
Absolutely delicious, like being in Rome. This is truly ITALIAN cuisine, not Italian-American food. We started with the Focaccia de Recco con Speck. The Focaccia was warm and chewy with a buttery, sweet finish from the stracchino. It was the perfect match for the rich flavor of the prosciutto. Next was the Lasagna alla Bolognese...there are not words...squisito!! We also had the Rigatoni alla Gricia, and shared an order of the Branzino, both of which were a treat for the mouth and stomach...ottimo! Still, the Lasagna is not to be missed! We finished with the Ricotta and Nutella Pie and the Homemade Apple Tarte, both of which had rich homemade flavors, but with a bit of sophistication...e.g. the layer of lemon custard in the apple tart; unexpected yet the perfect addition. The only thing missing, (and I'm just being picky here) was a bit of lemon rind to accompany the expresso, other than that, this was the perfect meal. BYOB, so splurge on a good super Tuscan and have an amazing dinner.
This place is amazing! Every piece of pasta was clearly made with care. I didn't want the meal to end. They have special dishes every day. I recommend getting a bunch of food for everyone to share family style. The chef came out and talked to us and personally recommended some dishes which was such a nice and personal touch.
Wow is all we can say. The octopus appetizer was outstanding. All the pastas we had were incredible. You can tell everything is homemade here. We definitely will be coming back!
Before writing this review I made sure to go to the restaurant twice in the span of a 3 week period to get this right.(in short…it was that good) Here we go. This is what a dining experience should be. The recipes, ingredients, care, and love could be felt in the cuisine in its entirety. The first experience was a pre-fix menu which I’m not certain is still offered but really hit the ball out of the park so to speak (10 out of 10) but for this experience I’ll reference my most recent visit. My wife and I came to the village of Ridgewood on an ever so busy Saturday night. We entered this very quaint establishment. It’s a beautiful layout, open kitchen design, and immaculately clean. We were sat towards the end of the restaurant and luckily for me next to the kitchen to get a sneak of the magic. Our meal started with arancini siciliani, the Sicilian rice balls. The flavor was very fitting and matched perfectly with the vinaigrette I believe it was placed on. We then ordered the Pinsa Brie with mozzarella and smoked prosciutto…whoa! The texture of the dough, the quality of the mozzarella and dab of balsamic were perfectly placed. Wish I ordered two (but I’ll be back) Our main came and I chose the fettuccine alla bolognese. Interesting thing was I was eyeing the kitchen and (assuming) saw the chef pull the fettuccine right before it arrived on my plate. The flavors were so hearty, seasoned to perfection, and pasta very fresh. It brought me right to a village in Italy. For desserts I had the Nutella crumb cake and it was rich, appropriately flaky, and garnished perfectly on the plate. This has been one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. You can get a sense that the chef, family, and workers are going above and beyond to craft what each diner is eating…and you can taste it in every bite. This is a 5 out of 5 on here and a 10 out of 10 in my book. Looking forward to dining again.
Had a fantastic time at From Scratch Ridgewood, all thanks to the culinary magic of Chef Claudia Rovengo! I can't recommend it enough. The lasagna was not only incredibly fresh and tasty but the welcoming ambiance and friendly staff made the experience even more delightful. Definitely a must-try!
This is the place to be! Ive been to Italy multiple times and somehow this Italian Resturant still holds up as the best i've ever had. Always an amazing dining experience and atmosphere. Highly recommend!!!
The best carbonara we’ve ever had … hands down … & we have been all over Italy. From Scratch is top tier & one of our favorite restaurants; we are regulars here & since we can’t go as often in person anymore, we order it as take out frequently. The food is authentic, delicious & the staff is lovely.
Best authentic Italian food in Ridgewood!! I always love the carbonara and Nutella pie for dessert! Everyone who works there is kind, knowledgeable, and cares about your dining experience. I couldn’t recommend this place more!
Found this restaurant on Seed Oil Scout and since j work in the area, I figured I would give it a try. New Jersey has an abundance of Italian restaurants, however this is the first one that does not use seed oils. I ordered the Cacio a Pepe lasagna and it was AMAZING! Did not disappoint. I will definitely go back for dinner to try more plates but if the lasagna I had for lunch was an indicator of how good the food is, i am super excited to try more. The best part is I didn't feel sleepy or tired. Not putting seed oils is definitely a game changer.
Incredible Italian food. High quality and made "from scratch", fresh. Very friendly service. We had a mushroom gnocci dish and a Carbonara. We were both full but not "heavy". Nutella pie is delicious. Make sure to make a reservation on the weekend. They do not serve wine, but you can byo. Great date night spot.
One of thee best, most authentic Italian restaurants in all of New Jersey, and the tri state area for that matter. Love and respect for old world Italian simplicity in every creative dish.
authentic Italian cuisine with genuine flavors, fresh ingredients, and soulful dishes that truly honor traditional Italian cooking.
Everything is delicious and homemade. Service is amazing and personable. We had Valentina as our waitress and she was lovely! Dessert was amazing too
It’s not every day you walk into a restaurant and feel instantly transported to a small town in Italy — but that’s exactly what happens at this incredible Italian spot in Ridgewood, New Jersey. From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed with a warm, family-style atmosphere that’s hard to find these days. The menu is a love letter to traditional Italian cuisine, executed with care, passion, and a respect for authentic flavors. I had the pleasure of trying three dishes that were nothing short of sensational. The gnocchi with pesto were handmade, soft, and delicate — coated in a fresh, aromatic pesto that was perfectly balanced with basil, Parmigiano, and toasted pine nuts. Every bite melted in my mouth. The braised short ribs were the standout: fall-off-the-bone tender, slow-cooked to perfection, and served in a rich, flavorful sauce that clearly took hours to develop. Deep, comforting, and unforgettable. And to end on the sweetest note — the apple cake. Simple, rustic, and just like something a real Italian nonna would bake. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla gelato, it was the kind of dessert that makes you close your eyes and savor every bite. Rating: 10/10. Can’t wait to return — and bring friends!
This place was so cute! I went with the fam to eat our pre-election anxiety in carbs and this place did NOT disappoint. Everything was so great except the walnut raviolis. They weren’t bad, there was just zero flavor and everything else was so spectacular. The bread for the table was exceptional. Thank you Balthazar. The rigatoni was delicious and the kitchen should really be proud. Service was great. We didn’t have a reservation but there at 530pm prompt when they opened.
Hands down one of the best pasta shops we’ve been to that served authentic homemade pasta. For a tiny restaurant their food packs a huge punch. Our server was attentive (a little quiet) but was great overall. The restaurant only has about 10 tables (if that), so it’s very intimate, and is a BYOB which is a plus. From the appetizer to the entree, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. APPETIZER: 1. Burrata | Rating: 5/5 - rich and creamy with delicious crunchy croutons ENTREE: 1. [Special of the Day] Porcini Mushroom Raviolis | Rating: 5/5 - decadent, melted in your mouth raviolis. I wish there were more! The sauce was light and airy and had great flavor 2. Spicy Pasta (we don’t remember the name but it was to die for) | Rating: 5/5 3. Carbonara | Rating: 5/5 - light and creamy. The crispy guanciale was the perfect topping to the pasta. DESSERT: - we unfortunately didn’t have dessert (they were out of the apple tart I think it was) and we all wanted to get that. We had saw other tables that ordered desserts and they looked fabulous. Overall, we’ll be back. The food was fresh, made to order, and delicious. The portions aren’t huge (like nothing to take home) but you don’t feel like you overate. Are the prices high - yes, but you’re paying for homemade, authentic pasta. With the amount of work that went into each dish, the prices are justified. Next time we hope to try the desserts!
From Scratch in Ridgewood is always a wonderful experience. Filipo is always a delight to meet!! friendly, attentive, and full of energy that makes every visit enjoyable. The space is inviting, and everything from the food to the service is consistently excellent. Highly recommend!
The focaccia w speck app was different but excellent, I had the papadelle alla cacciatora, loved it. My wife had the rigatoni alla carbonara, she liked it as well, loves al dente. The dessert topped it off, ricotta and Nutella pie, perfectly balanced. Only complaint was it came out a little slow, but the owner talked to us and apologized, that service attention greatly appreciated. Highly recommended if you love homemade pasta.
A must go! WOW color me impressed. Everything is (surprise) made from scratch and perfectly done. Warm ambiance and lovely service. What I tried: The olive bread is from Balthazar and with the evoo was so good! Apps: —tuna tartare - super fresh! Loved the Parmesan twill with it. —Meatballs - yum! Served on top of these creamy cheese sauce so good The special was a melt in your mouth short rib. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. Dessert - my new favorite!! Holy moly the warm Nutella pie melts in your mouth and is the essence of hazelnut and chocolate with a crispy crunch on top and buttery cookie bottom. Absolute perfection!! I will come back to get a whole pie for the holidays! Loved the complimentary butter cookies along with my espresso was delicious. 100/10!
Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We started with the salad, which was fresh and perfectly dressed. The lasagna bolognese and carbonara were perfect. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!
Delicious! Limited menu and they were out of almost all desserts, but very good. I got the amatriciana even though I love carbonara and was not sorry. Portions were not big but perfect for me. They gave us a bit of bread which was freshly baked and delicious. We didn't get dessert this time, but we've had the nutella pie and it was great. They had complimentary butter cookies, which were good and sweet. I love the small, family vibe here and feel like it's exclusive. Definitely make a reservation.
I recently attended a cooking class led by Chef Claudia to celebrate my sister's 60th birthday, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, Claudia's warm and welcoming demeanor made us feel right at home. She expertly guided us through the creation of homemade Malloreddu Gnocchetti sardi, sharing her extensive knowledge and passion for cooking. The class was not only educational but also incredibly fun. Claudia’s engaging teaching style kept everyone involved, and we loved her tips and tricks that made even the most complex techniques feel achievable. The dish we prepared was delicious, as well as her focaccia and butter cookies. I highly recommend Chef Claudia's cooking class for anyone looking to elevate their cooking skills while having a great time. She truly made my sister's birthday special, and we all left inspired and excited to try new recipes at home! Thank you, Chef Claudia, for a memorable experience!
Food, service and atmosphere were amazing! (We went there for lunch) I highly recommend dining at From Scratch of you're looking for authentic Italian cuisine that's fresh and flavorful - Appetizer Crostone - Entrees Walnut Ravioli Truffle Carbonara - Dessert Tiramisu Nutella cake (to go and still amazing)
I came here with my lover on Valentine’s Day. The atmosphere is beautiful, the restaurant is dimly lit, enough so to see everything but not at all too bright. The place has an intimate and warm ambiance, quiet too with a lovely romantic playlist. The chefs pay close attention to the little details, each dish was beautifully decorated and displayed with sauces on the plates and garnishes on top. The heart shaped napkins were the cutest touch. The food was delicious, my favorite was the puff pastry ratatouille appetizer (pictured) and the special dessert they had for Valentine’s Day, dollops of white chocolate cream in a perfect tangy authentic passion fruit sauce with a little crunchy wafer a top, it was so delicious, sweet and tangy. It was nice that they did a special menu for Valentine’s Day, I’d love to come back again to select from their regular menu as well. The service was wonderful, we sat at the bar and got to watch some of the dishes being made, the chefs and servers were kind and very professional, you can tell they are highly trained and take care to make sure each dish is made and presented to perfection, they prioritize quality and presentation.
My husband and I went to From Scratch for the first time and it was fantastic! Everything from the appetizers, pasta dishes to the dessert were top notch! The pasta is of high quality and very authentic. The service was excellent as well. Highly recommended.
The food here is phenomenal—authentic farm to table level freshness and the tiramisu’s are out of this world—only in Italy do they make them this way—made to order, not sitting and getting soggy. The portions are great and the quality is such that the prices are more than worth it. Wonderful family owned fantastic restaurant. I’ll be back.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a hidden gem in the cute town of Ridgewood! This small Italian restaurant is full of charm and heart. The pasta was made completely from scratch and tasted incredible—rich, authentic Italian flavors in every bite, clearly prepared with so much love and care. The dessert was absolutely out of this world and the perfect ending to an amazing meal. Cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and a truly memorable experience. Great service. Can’t wait to come back!
Food was absolutely delicious, the pasta was outstanding. Perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Overall really liked the place however its very small on on Saturday night extremely loud, some people feel the need to scream across the table, not the restaurants fault. Service was very good, but a little slow. Understandable in a small place when you have set seating times and everyone comes in at the same time. We will definitely go back
A small but lovely place owned and operated by Italians. Excellent food. I had the chicken special, friends had pasta, they said it was very good. Then got a tiramisu which - surprisingly - had a crunchy layer of lady fingers in it. It was different but excellent. The only surprise was right at the beginning when we heard that alcohol was 'bring your own'.... What?? An Italian place without red wine?? But we resolved it by walking over the corner to a wine store and bought a bottle of nice chianti. Not being local there, we didn't know....
It was our 1st time dining at From Scratch and we truly don't know how we never been here before. Everything from the service, the vibe and of course the food was fantastic. We sat at the counter because they were fully booked (not surprised) and it was an amazing experience. Giada, our server was extremely attentive and made us feel so welcomed. We also chatted with Fiona and Filippo and by the end of the evening we felt as is we were hanging out with friends. Ok now the food haha, we had the Eggplant Parmigiano, Rigatoni Carbonara w/ truffle, Pappardelle Ossobuco and the Nutella pie. EVERYTHING was delicious and very authentic Italian. Quality ingredients and cooked perfectly. As people who visit Italy often, we pride ourselves in finding and supporting authentic Italian restaurants. Dont hesitate to make a reservation. We will definitely be back soon!
From Scratch is always excellent, but if you get a chance to do a cooking class with Claudia it’s a game-changer. She was incredibly thorough explaining the history of carbonara and we went through all the steps to ensure a truly authentic experience. I can’t wait to take the lasagna and ravioli classes in the future. Our group had a blast and I’d highly recommend it whether its a casual dinner, or learning something new for your culinary repertoire. Graziemille!
Every dish I’ve tried here has been truly delicious, and you can really taste how fresh the ingredients are. It’s become my wife and I’s favorite spot. The staff and owners are so friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home. We’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day here and also took a cooking class, and both experiences were unforgettable. I’m really happy we found this hidden gem and look forward to many more visits.
This is our favorite restaurant! The food is authentic Italian, and every dish delicious. The staff and owners are really friendly, making every visit a great experience. It’s a small, cozy place, and it’s BYOB, so don’t forget to bring your favorite drink. Make sure to call ahead and get a reservation, since it can fill up quickly. They also offer cooking classes, and I totally recommend trying one. Claudia is passionate about sharing her recipes, and she takes pride in teaching. It’s been over two years since we took the class, and we’re still making and loving those recipes at home. Would definitely recommend it for great food, friendly people, and a fun cooking experience!
Whether it’s going out with friends, on a date or to celebrate a night with family, From Scratch has always exceeded our expectations! If anyone in my life is looking for a dinner recommendation it’s always this spot - along with their Cacio e Pepe and Nutella Pie. You couldn’t go wrong ordering anything from here, and I always enjoy the new specials to change things up. Outside of the food the service is friendly, accommodating and always helpful. The pasta is truly delicious and I always leave happy and full. I look forward to our next visit in the near future!!
Wow, what an absolute amazing dinner. We were greated by Fillipo who was getting out table prepared for 6. Upon sitting Valentina gave us the daily specials and we took some time to read the menu and they opened our wine. We decided to order a bunch of appetizers and each an entree. The appetizers were amazing, so fresh and absolutely stunning to look at. The taste of each was even better. The entrees were equally as amazing as the appetizers. The food at From Scratch is so fresh. You won't find fresh pasta like this anywhere in the bergen county area. Give From Scratch a try. You won't want to go anywhere else for authentic Italian food.
Why travel all the way to Rome to taste authentic Roman cuisine when you can just come here for a wonderful Roman meal? The food is delicious, the service is great, and the atmosphere is wonderful. This is by far my favorite Italian restaurant in Bergen County. I highly recommend this family owned and operated restaurant.
Absolutely blown away by Just Scratch! This Italian restaurant takes “made from scratch” to a whole new level — every dish is prepared right in front of you, and the freshness is undeniable. From handmade pasta to perfectly balanced sauces, you can taste the quality and care in every bite. The service was equally impressive: warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about the food. It’s rare to find an Italian spot that feels this authentic and personal. Highly recommend for anyone who loves real, handmade Italian food done right.
My wife and I recently celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary at From Scratch, coinciding with the restaurant’s 10th anniversary, and it was an unforgettable evening that exceeded every expectation. From the moment we stepped into the warm, inviting space, the staff made us feel like honored guests, with a special nod to the milestone celebrations—both ours and theirs. The atmosphere buzzed with a joyful energy, perfectly balancing sophistication and comfort, as if the restaurant itself was toasting a decade of culinary excellence. The four-course tasting menu was a masterclass in flavor and creativity, each dish showcasing the kitchen’s dedication to crafting everything from scratch. I began with the beef tartare, a delicate yet bold starter. It set the tone for what was to come: precision and passion in every bite. My wife got the eggplant caponata for her first course, a vibrant dish that was both rustic and refined. It was a testament to how From Scratch elevates humble ingredients into something extraordinary. The handmade raviolis were an absolute highlight, each delicate parcel bursting with a silky ricotta filling. The pasta was so tender it practically melted, a labor of love that spoke to the restaurant’s name and ethos. We couldn’t stop raving about the texture—perfectly al dente, yet impossibly light. The mint added a hint of freshness to the dish, that I was originally hesitant about, but I’m happy I gave it a go! For the main courses, my wife got the lamb. Perfectly cooked to a rosy pink, it was fall-apart tender, and had a perfect crust on the outside. The dish was hearty yet elegant. Equally stunning were the scallops, seared to golden perfection with a buttery, caramelized crust. They sat around a small bed of caviar with purple mashed potatoes. Each bite was a harmonious balance of sea and earth. The meal concluded with a ricotta dessert that was nothing short of divine. The creamy, cloud-like ricotta mousse was paired with a coulis with ginger dough crumbs. It was the perfect sweet note to end the evening, light yet indulgent, with flavors that lingered long after the last spoonful. From Scratch isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of craft, community, and unforgettable moments. For our anniversary, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to mark the occasion, and we’re already looking forward to returning to see what the next decade brings for this culinary gem. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a dining experience that’s as heartfelt as it is delicious!
Absolutely delicious. It's such a wonderful Italian restaurant. Delicate, well cooked, and rich in flavor dishes, from the appetizers, entrée and the desserts. I love that you can see the chefs cooking close to you. Well-organized restaurant. Suggestion: Please call in advance to reserve a table.
Cute little Italian spot, we came across while visiting one of our favorite dessert places a few doors away. The food had great flavor, seems they change the menu weekly, which is great to keep a nice variety and it's a BYOB, which is fantastic. Their was only 1 waitress, which is understandable since it's a very small location, but she would seem rushed or flustered at times to stay on top of everything. Everyone was very friendly! The only issue I had was that the salmon was supposed to be served with a SIDE of mashed, it was more like a garnish. When you looked under the salmon, there were no potatoes. When we asked for more, we were told they were all out, so we asked for them to accommodate a different side, which they did but then charged $8 for it even though they didn't give an actual side. Overall, I would def eat there again.
Was ok. I’ve had better at similiar made-from-scratch places. Flavors could’ve been more bold. Had high hopes for the squid ink tortellini but truthfully I tasted none of the flavors as described in their menu. BYOB and the service are big positives and reason for my 4 stars.
The dishes we ordered were good. The grilled octopus was great, potato soup (Chef's Choice Soup) was delicious and hearty, the carbonara tartufata was delicious although I'm used to a more creamy carbonara sauce which is my favorite. The special of the day - short ribs was on the salty side but flavorful. Ambiance is as expected for a tiny place in Ridgewood. We sat right by the tiny kitchen along the hallway which is fine as but nothing much to look at so there is really not much of an ambiance. There is a big counter in the middle of the restaurant that accommodates a small bar area. I don't think it's necessary. But most importantly, the service was great! I have read some of the unfavorable comments but this time, it was a positive experience for us so no complaints here. I hope they can sustain. I have recommended to my friends and family and we will sure come back. Date: 2/20/2021
I had dinner at the restaurant tonight to celebrate a friend's bday. We waited 15 minutes and no one came to take our order. The couple who came in after me was already served their appetizers. I finally asked the waitress if someone was could take our order. She came after going to other tables and took our order. She never mentioned any of the specials (I heard her tell the other customers the specials of the day). When I asked for fresh pepper, she walked away and I wasn't sure she had heard me. When I asked for pepper again as well as a spoon, she snapped at me. I was taken aback. It was uncomfortable. As we approached the end of our meal, I could tell she was trying to be more cordial. Even though the food was good, I would never return to the establishment. It was not the way I wanted to celebrate my friend's birthday.
Honestly disappointing. Gnocchi was not what I was expecting what were those. Definitely not homemade pasta. Coke was warm. Dishes were skimpy. Amatriciana was okay. Not authentic. Pretty place though, I will say.
Nothing had one iota of flavor. Everything was so bland, I could have been eating the cold dry bread that is placed on all the empty tables. The meatloaf was bland and boring. The fish tasted as if it was boiled in water, no salt, no wine, no lemon flavor nothing, nada, zip. Even though there was lemon slices, they didn't add even the tinest bit of anything. The pasta Carbonara also had no flavor. There was no evidence that they added salt to the pasta or the water. The pasta was slightly over cooked and the sauce was slightly undercooked (which was a little gross) and aside from the delicious smattering of pancetta, this to was a waste of space. There were two young servers who not once checked on us to see how we were enjoying the meal and not once expressed surprise or dismay that we ate only a few bites of everything. I asked the young man for the check and he started clearing the table. I said could you clear the table after you get our check? He just smiled and kept stacking dishes. I gave two stars instead of one because of the roasted peppers, our vegetable of choice. They were so outrageously flavorful, that I saw a small glimpse that the cook can cook, unfortunately we saw no other evidence.
This is my first time ordering from this restaurant. I had high expectations after seeing the photos online of the various meals. And although the food tastes fine, I am very disappointed in the price versus meal size. I ordered walnut ravioli entre and the meatball appetizer, with a hefty price of $28 and $18 I was expecting a decent portion size. When i received the meal to go I noticed now little food I have received. After comparing to the online photos I feel like I was misled.
Extremely upset over the dining I just experienced at From Scratch. After weeks of planning for a surprise birthday luncheon, the experience was completely overshadowed with the unbelievable number of errors and truly terrible service. From the restaurant running out of ice to asking 4 or 5 times for the same item repeatedly, to not having specific menu items available as originally agreed upon and printed on customized menus, to the server placing the bill in the middle of the table after a credit card was provided up front and to top it off being overcharged. Unhappy would be an enormous understatement. Poor management and terrible service. Even got yelled at by the owner’s son for calmly addressing these errors after my guests had left. Have no idea how they stay in business if this is how they treat their customers.
Hate to leave a bad review but I have to 100% agree with the negative reviews here. The food was expensive, with tiny portions and everything so bland. There was no taste in either dish that we ordered; the bread was the best thing we ate. Also we went when they opened at 5pm to a completely empty restaurant and were asked if we had reservations, if we didn't we had to sit outside on the sidewalk. I should have gone with my gut and bounced when I heard that. In the 1:15 that we ate outside only 2-3 tables were sat inside with the rest of the tables empty. The meal was highly disappointing as this place has been on my to go list for a long time.
If I could give zero stars I would- good food, yes; cute restaurant, yes; but when a service issue was raised, politely, the owner, and particularly the son of the owner were not only unsympathetic, they were downright rude. We were there for a celebration, every reason to be happy and upbeat. The waiter was incapable! Do you know how good food is better with good ambiance and service? Well, the reverse is true too: good food is terrible with bad service and a management that doesn’t step in to make things right. The waiter was more a distraction than a service provider; management had no interest in fixing the issue, rather ignoring an opportunity to make things right. Highly discourage patronizing this establishment! Arrogance should never be rewarded!
Ordered delivery, eggplant parm dinner cost $24 listed, $32 for delivery and tax. They gave me one slice of eggplant. Utter ripoff. It wasn't even good.
The food was genuinely amazing—everything tasted fresh and well prepared. However, the portions were on the smaller side, which isn’t my preference, especially considering the price. Overall, the restaurant is quite expensive. Customer service was decent. Initially, we were told we would be charged for extra bread. After our waitress accidentally spilled water on my child, she brought us bread to make up for it and did not charge us, which we appreciated. My biggest issue was the lack of pricing transparency. Every dish we ordered was priced higher than what was listed on the restaurant’s website. For example, the Fettuccine / Rigatoni Amatriciana Bolognese was listed online at $22, but we were charged $26 for dining in. When I asked about it, the owner explained that the website prices are for takeout only and that dine-in prices are higher. This distinction was not clearly stated online and impacted our entire bill. Overall, the food quality was very good, but between the small portions and the higher dine-in pricing across the board, I don’t feel the experience justifies the cost. It was a decent experience, but not one I’d rush back to at these prices Edit 1 response to owner : “Wow. Just wow. Came here because the online menu and the one plastered on the door looked reasonable—decent portions, fair prices. Ordered four entrees to dine in. Bill arrives and it’s at least $20 higher than expected. Turns out every single item is mysteriously $4–5 more expensive for dine-in than what’s advertised. No warning, no footnote, no ‘prices may vary for dine-in’ anywhere. Just pure menu bait-and-switch. When I politely asked about the difference, I got shrugs and ‘that’s just how it is.’ Left a honest review mentioning the surprise charges and lack of transparency. The owner’s response? A public essay shaming me for daring to complain about ‘only $4’ (they clearly didn’t read that it was $4–5 PER ITEM), mocking me for not understanding ‘takeout vs restaurant menus’ (as if secretly jacking up every price without notice is standard practice), and literally telling me ‘this is not the place for you.’ All because I pointed out their pricing sleight-of-hand. Bro, if your business model relies on tricking people with fake-low menu prices and then springing a hidden dine-in surcharge, maybe you’re the one who doesn’t understand how restaurants work in 2025. Transparency isn’t optional—it’s basic decency. Food was fine, but the taste of getting scammed and then publicly berated by the owner for noticing? Lingers way longer than the meal. Hard pass forever. Plenty of places that don’t treat customers like idiots who won’t notice an extra $20 vanishing from their wallet. Save your money and your dignity—eat literally anywhere else.”
I ordered ziti Carbonara. What a disappointment. Carbonara is a rich cream sauce. What I received was a watery sauce with no flavor at all. It was all watery as sauce. That’s not Carbonara sauce. Terrible cook and dish. Will never order or go again. It’s all show. Not Authentic Italian food.
We got there at 5:30 when they opened. Not a soul in the place. Every table open. They told us we could only sit at the bar because they have reservations coming in at 6. We left. My boyfriend called back and they had a table for 2 at 6:15. Incredibly rude.
On Saturday, March 7th, I dined at the restaurant with a reservation for 5:30 PM. We were the first table to be seated that evening. The food itself was excellent. For appetizers, my wife ordered the eggplant, while my son and I chose the soup. Although the server estimated the eggplant would take 12 minutes to prepare, it actually took 25 minutes to arrive at our table. While the server provided good service and was very apologetic, significant delays and problems originated from the kitchen. The main courses were particularly problematic. After an extended wait, only two out of the three entrées arrived, with one being served cold. The third entrée was brought to our table 15 minutes later. Throughout the experience, there was no manager on duty to offer updates or explanations regarding these delays. Although the server did his best, the lack of managerial presence and poor coordination in the kitchen resulted in a disappointing service experience, especially given the restaurant's pricing. The service quality did not meet expectations and was even less satisfactory than what one might expect at a fast-food establishment like McDonald's. Due to the absence of a manager and the subpar service, I would not recommend this restaurant
As a professional pastry chef with a deep appreciation for Italian desserts, I chose this restaurant with the expectation of tasting a true Napolitan treat. Unfortunately, the experience was far from what I anticipated. The dessert was hastily assembled at the counter with little to no care in presentation. I will be attaching a photo that clearly illustrates the lack of finesse in preparation. I was particularly surprised by the absence of the classic components that define a Napolitan dessert: • Where was the triple-baked puff pastry? • The two distinct layers of pastry cream? • The marbled glaze layer? Instead, what I received was a puff pastry sandwich with a symbolic amount of cream and fruit in between two somewhat softened sheets of pastry. While the puff pastry itself was acceptable in texture, the overall structure and flavor profile were a poor representation of the Italian dessert it claimed to be. To charge $14 for this minimal and uninspired composition was disappointing, especially for an establishment representing itself as an Italian restaurant. Quality, care, and authenticity should never be compromised—especially in a cuisine renowned for its precision and tradition. Thank you, nonetheless, for the fruit-filled puff pastry sandwich. But I sincerely hope future offerings better reflect the excellence and elegance of true Italian patisserie. I’m sharing both the menu image and the actual product I received in the photos.
Food: Bad. Guanciale was badly burned and hard as glass. The sauce was sour (probably from burned ingredient). Gritty and unpleasant carbonara. Lasagna was better but not something you want to have again. Service: a young man approached at the beginning but then was busy with anything but serving our table. A lady had to step in. However when I nicely mentioned that the carbonara wasn't good she was annoyed at me and arrogant in her answer. I am a nice person and somewhat shy. Why was I handled so rudely I don't understand. Edit: I have finished your dishes because I haven't had any food that day and was hungry. If you cooked your shoe and served it I would probably eat it. I didn't need your discount I wanted to be heard. I was disappointed with the quality of the food and you were arrogant and rude. And even now you assumed that the problem with the customer by default. You cannot even fathom that you might do something wrong. I tried to appeal to you before making it public. I can't believe that you couldn't care less about customers.
