We have not eaten here in over 30 years and decided to come back and check it out. Large menu of Italian items made from scratch in solo and Familia style portions. To start, we ordered the familia portion of Insalata Caprese. Delicious with even a few portions left for lunch tomorrow. In addition, we had a side Caesar salad. For entrees we had the familia portion of the chicken piccata, a solo portion of veal Marsala and a solo portion of chicken Parmesan. I found the vegetables with the chicken piccata to be heavy on the garlic, but the Ms. loved them. Just my personal preference. Veal Marsala was outstanding and daughter wished she had more! Now for the true reason I came! The tiramisu! My kryptonite! Decades ago, this was one of the top tiramisu desserts I had ever had. I am happy to report it has aged like a fine wine! Top notch, creamy and to die for. Love it! Even better than I remember. Miguel was our waiter. He did an excellent job and provided us with outstanding customer service. The bus staff was also attentive and came by often to clean plates and keep our water full. Decor was like I had stepped back in time. Just as we remembered it! However, well decorated for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Great meal, with great service at this classic Italian Rockville mainstay. Looking forward to coming back again soon, but sooner than 30 years.
Always a good experience it's been around a long time. I hope many people to try it. I ordered take out first time and it was just as good as inside the restaurant 😌. I ordered salmon entree with veggies and rice it was perfect and focaccia bread was included with olive oil and lemon butter that was tasty.
This restaurant made me so happy when I found out it was Italian because from 2012 to 2014 in Ouagadougou, I had an Italian boss who introduced me to the culinary arts of that country. I also found a good Italian beer that was very tasty. I enjoyed a delicious chicken dish with vegetables, not to mention their delicious crusty bread.
First time visiting this restaurant. Awesome food with friendly staff. Friday night band playing classic rock live music was awesome. The music was peppy and yet soothing to ears. Awesome harmony among the band. Had a wonderful time
Old school Italian done right! Live music. Can’t beat it. Servers occasionally confuse the tables, but it’s all good. I would eat here once a week if I lived closer.
I had a good time and the service was so attentive. The solo portions are still large enough to share with one other person. The "familia" portions are really for 4 people. Just FYI (lol!) I wasnt a fan of the pork belly carbonara as the sauce tasted like it was made with more of an alfredo sauce which was less authentic for the dish. It also just needed a little more salt. The greek salad was gorgeous and everthing else was very tasty. The penne with smoked salmon was so well-seasoned and good. I would say it was the star of the night. I would like to come back and try more items from the grill and even for some entertainment.
Well well, I love Italian food since I’m from Asmara, one of the beautiful Italian colonized city. I grew up eating pasta and Italian food, but this eggplant with pasta was amazing. Hands down! Our server Nicholas was very friendly and attentive, also the place is cool and very wide.
Food was exquisite, excellent presentation and really good service.
Service is excellent! My waiter was hands down one of the best! He provided me with one of the most accommodating experiences, i could ask for at a restaurant! The food was delicious as always! The live band was a awesome addition to dinner and the desserts completed the evening!! Thanks you That's Amore for a wonderful experience!
I was visiting from out of town and staying at the courtyard Marriott across the street when I decided to grab dinner at “That’s Amore”. Outside the entrance I struck up a conversation with a gentlemen and asked how the food was. He said it’s great a raved about the Lasagna. I am a Lasagna connoisseur and so I went in. The Lasagna was super tasty and portion was generous. The complementary Facaccia bread with olive oil was also delightful. The Wednesday night three piece band played swing era music and was very entertaining. Turns out the guy out front was the clarinet player and so talented. I highly recommend coming!!
I had a wonderful experience! I’m really not sure why the other reviews are so terrible. Service was attentive, friendly and fast. The bread was amazing. We ordered stuffed mushroom, italian sausage, balsamic chicken and the pesto gnocchi. My boyfriend has a severe nut allergy so when we asked for the pesto gnocchi without pesto (pesto often contains walnuts) the waiter was able to quickly suggest a substitute sauce for the gnocchi and it was delicious! Many restaurants aren’t very good when catering to nut allergies but this was great. Im moving to this area soon and i can’t wait to come back and try more dishes!
Classic Italian food served by a professional wait staff. Wonderful food, service and ambiance. Ordered Veal parmesan and chicken fettuccini. Both were delightful to the pallet and the eye. The resturant has an old school Italian restaurant look and feel. Definitely a hidden gem. You MUST visit them.
I ate at That's Amore for many years, and it was one of my favorite places for great Italian food. On Sunday, my family ate there. Their still good.
From the beginning until the end it was an amazing dining experience! The server and other staff are very attentive and friendly, even though it was my first time there they made me feel right at home! The food was simply fantastic! The bread and oil with pepper and olive oil was delicious! The main I had left be beyond stuffed and satisfied! Finished it with a sumptuous cannoli that was perfection! Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for fantastic authentic Italian cuisine! 10/10
A lovely low-key restaurant. The food is delicious everything was freshly made, it's a great place for romantic date night or just a great place to grab some authentic Italian food.
Great service and food, not sure where any of the negative reviews came from but this place is legit!
This spot has the best and most friendly people imaginable given the COVID-19 outbreak. The waiter kept checking in on me, have me extra bread, and poured the biggest glass of wine I have ever had at a bar/restaurant. Absolutely 5 stars and I will be back
Great food, great service. A little pricy, but you get what you pay for.
If you are older or want that supper Ricki Recardo supper club vibe. This is it. Prices are higher than others but it keeps the clientele at a status you would expect what environment. Don’t go in here without a tie highly not recommended. If you do make sure it’s a jacket with a really good shirt ladies dress to impress, but it’s not prom.
That’s Amore’s name is true, I love this place! Long time customer. The food is amazing and you can’t beat their happy hour. Great live music too. The staff is amazing, very friendly, and knows everyone by name.
Seriously mouth watering well prepared Fresh food. Love the music on Friday nights but at times the noise/crowd is too great.
The food, service and atmosphere were all wonderful. Best of all was the special concert by Glen Flowers and the Strangers. Grazie from all of us.
The stained glass was great, the music was great, the lanterns were great although there were brief flickers and feedback in the microphones. Other than that it was ok, and I hope you make more stained glass window lights.
This place does not deserve the bad reviews some people gave it. I went in with fairly low expectations, but it turned out to be superb. The atmosphere is very old-style, classic Italian. Lots of wood, low lighting, comfortable tables and booths scattered about. The background music is 1940-era big band stuff, which sets a very Dean Martin-Frank Sinatra romantic kind of mood. I was there on a Tuesday evening, and the service was great. It might be worse when they are busy, but the staff looked experienced enough to handle it. The food - ah, yes, the food. I ordered veal parmigana, which is my usual test for an Italian restaurant I've not tried before. The veal was a slab of cutlet, not the ground and formed stuff some places serve. It was perfectly breaded, perfectly fried, and perfectly covered with melted cheese and a delicious, home-made marinara sauce. The spaghetti on the side was cooked properly and not overdone. Along with a glass of red wine, the entire meal set me back less than $40, which for a sit-down dinner in Montgomery County is quite reasonable. My only complaint is that the partons in the adjacent bar were somewhat boisterous. This can be fixed by closing the connecting door. I highly recommend That's Amore.
Such a comfortable, enjoyable place ☺️ And live entertainment too!!!
Glenn Flowers and the Stangers new album releases was a walk through cunning lyrics mixed with vibrant arrangements... Fantastic. The Matt Kramer Project performed the old jazz standards with a smooth touch, the ambiance was great, family and friends topped the chart. And the Master of Ceremonies brought the whole thing together, with the coolest immense live song and video mix. What an awesome night.
I like the name of this place and it's design. Those were what attracted me in the first place. The food is yummy. You can't go wrong with the selection of red wine. I didn't have space left for dessert.
Dec2022 Yesenia was wonderful and our experience was tasty. We had a selection of pastas: penne vodka 0/10, fettuccine Alfredo with lobster 7/10 lobster was dry and basic flavoring, and salmon pesto gnocchi was 8/10 very tasty complemented with some merlot red wine. Calamari was fire and so was some of the desserts.
We attended a wedding reception in their banquet hall. The catering manager/gm/owner was fantastic. The food was served family style and delicious, the staff was exceptional, and the set up worked very nicely with the open bar, dance floor, and tables.
Overall experience was good. However, they really need to cut back on the salt. The amount in all the different meals we ordered was unnecessarily high. Also, I don't understand the accounts that shared the "fingernail" controversy haven't been banned. Clearly they are fake accounts.... Anyway, not sure if I will go back unless salt is reduced...
Best food of any area place with a band by far. Bar has ambiance & music on Saturday nights. Not much dance floor - preferred when had bands in dining room.
We all had such an enjoyable evening at That's Amore listening to the jazz/swing band and the Glen Flowers band who played unique originals on 12/5! And the emcee/DJ (Gold Standard) was dynamic and helped create a pleasant and festive atmosphere. We enjoyed the pizza and stuffed mushrooms.
Went here for a fancy dinner but were unfortunately sat in the bar area because they were preparing for an event. It's was still nice but didn't have that 'fancy' feel I was looking forward to. There was also a lot of noise being made in preparation for the event. Service was great but the food was lacking in flavor. Looked better than it tasted. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day?
I decided to give this place a try because I feel like I've passed by a million times. Got the lobster fra diavolo for carryout and it was just okay. Usually I love fra diavolo sauces but this one really didn't do it for me. Perhaps there was a bit too much sauce, making the dish a bit soupy. The amount of lobster they gave was pretty good, but overall the dish wasn't worth the price in my opinion. I did like their bread a lot though. Maybe I'll give dining in here a shot sometime in the future since I live very close, but for now it's a 3 star rating.
An Italian restaurant catered to the older crowd. The decor is old school with pictures of dead singers and Rocky. The food was OK. I had the Amore's Meat Lasagna and part of the dish was bland the pasta, and the meat part of it was heavy on the salt. The bar area consists of regulars, feels kinda like Cheers.
I was excited to order from this restaurant because I remember how good it was 6 years ago. I made an online order for pickup and called once I arrived. I thought there was curbside pickup because I didn’t see any instructions on where to get the food. I asked the woman who answered says, “I guess I can come bring out to you.” [with an attitude] -Terrible hospitality! I don’t feel entitled to receive curbside but, the way the message was conveyed let me know the culture of this place has significantly changed. The worse part was the quality of the food!!! 😩 Not at all does it have the taste of authentic Italian food. Packaging was awful as the liquid spills out easily. I would have been more satisfied with Noodles and Company. Did ownership change within the last 6 years? I’m trying to understand what’s going on here. This place was a staple restaurant in Rockville and may have lost its’ charm. 🥺
Went here for a birthday dinner, let me start by saying our server was amazing! Very informative on the menu made my choice on food easy. However the food was edible to stay the least not at all what I expected for the price ($ 134.09) or to be considered Italian food. It is NOT authentic they used box pasta noodle (I could have made shrimp scampi at home with store bought pasta noodles) . The atmosphere gave me Italy the server was AMAZING! This is why I gave any stars. Based on food they would have gotten a ZERO!
Normally love this place, as we are local to the neighborhood and the food and service is usually on point. However tonight, for whatever reason the owner’s wife was super rude to my wife out of the blue. She totally ruined what would have otherwise been a pleasant experience.
If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. I found a fingernail in my pasta, and when I pointed it out to the staff, they didn’t even apologize—they just took the plate away. When I asked, “Aren’t you going to apologize?” they reluctantly muttered ‘apology,’ but with zero sincerity. This wasn’t even the first issue. Earlier, we found a bug in our salad, and again, instead of apologizing, they just took it away like it was no big deal. To make things worse, after they took away my contaminated plate of pasta, I waited at least 10 minutes, and they still hadn’t brought me a new plate. Am I supposed to just sit there and starve?? And then, as if the bad service and disgusting food hygiene weren’t enough, one of the staff had the audacity to tell us to ‘pay and get out.’ Excuse me??? We were a party of 14 celebrating a birthday, and this is how they treat their customers? If you care about food hygiene and decent service, AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. This was beyond unacceptable. 👎
UPDATE ON BEHALF OF A RESIDENT THAT LIVES WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF THIS PLACE: IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE A NEGATIVE I WOULD....on July 3rd my friend (the one from the 1st visit) called the restaurant around 2:45 an employee answered. I listened to her make a 4pm reservation for 2 people(not me because i learned the first time). WELP GUESS WHAT? She gets there and THEY WERE CLOSED!! Now normally i would laugh however now I'm starting to think this place just doesn't want any business from anyone except their family or exclusive patrons! ***DO NOT TRY TO EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT*** So first off website says they item at 11:30 however after 2 hours we pull up only to find that they don't open until "3 pm" as per the door sign. Then we called to verify and the gentleman that answered the phone said they opened within the next hour. Mind you it was 2:38 pm.. So needless to say I can't give you any good stars or reviews because I only know what the restaurant is like from the outside. Good luck to anyone that can get inside and enjoy the food.
I had an incredibly unpleasant experience at this restaurant. While dining, we found a fingernail in our food. Naturally, we brought this to the attention of the manager, but their response was shocking. The manager was not only unhelpful but also rude and dismissive. No proper apology or solution was offered, leaving me feeling completely disrespected as a customer. I will not be returning and would advise others to be cautious if they value quality service and hygiene.
This restaurant’s hygiene is absolutely shocking! Finding a bug in my salad was already disgusting, but what’s even worse—I found a large fingernail in my creamy pasta. This is completely unacceptable and raises serious concerns about food safety. When we brought this issue to the manager’s attention, their attitude was terrible. Instead of investigating the problem right after the problem was raised, he was smoking outside. Also, Instead of handling the situation professionally, they were dismissive and showed no genuine concern. No sincere apology, no proper resolution—just a complete lack of responsibility. At last but not least, we were asked to pay the check and GET OUT( yup, that was exactly what the manager said. He asked us to GET OUT). With such poor hygiene and awful customer service, I strongly recommend avoiding this place!
We had a terrible experience at this restaurant while celebrating a friend’s birthday. First, we found a bug in the salad, which was already bad enough! Then, we discovered half a fingernail in the pasta! Absolutely disgusting. When we brought it to the manager’s attention, instead of apologizing, they were rude and implied that we were making it up. We had been here before and had a decent experience, but this time was beyond unacceptable. Avoid this place!
I dined at That’s Amore with my husband, and it was an experience I would not wish upon anyone. From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt off. The food we ordered was not only overpriced but also tasted like slop. To make matters worse, we spotted a roach crawling across the bar. When we pointed it out to the bartender, her response was less than reassuring: "We just exterminated, and I assure you that the kitchen is clean." Honestly, we should have left right then and there, but we were already in the middle of our meal. We ended up packing up and leaving, feeling disappointed and disgusted. Our total bill was around $100 for two people, which is outrageous considering the quality of the food we received. If you’re looking for a great Italian dining experience, I highly recommend Fontina Grille instead. The food, service, price, and ambiance are all significantly better. After our meal at That’s Amore, we were hesitant to try Italian food again, but our visit to Fontina Grille for a graduation dinner truly restored our faith in Italian cuisine. Save your money and choose somewhere else!
Don’t support these people. What this restaurant has turned into is nothing short of a tragedy. My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for over a decade so we’re well versed in what it’s supposed to be. The original owner was an older Italian man who no longer owns the place. Unfortunately he wasn’t very good at advertisement, but he did ensure that they were serving authentic Italian food. They don’t even serve REAL BREAD anymore!! The food is now flavorless, the portions are smaller, and the place is a complete and total slap to the face to the original owner and the true beauty of southern Italian food.
We were charged $10.50 for three little bottles of water. We spent $100 at the restaurant and opened up our tab with a bottle of wine. Didn’t know how bad it was to be charged $10.50 for water. very sad this place used to be a gold mind but ever since the new owner that place is gone to trash
If you don't read this whole review, please just know that this restaurant will either lose or steal your money, and will be verbally abusive towards you. We have been going to That's Amore practically since it opened, and our experience this past weekend was so unbelievably bad that I will never be back, and will make sure everyone I know is aware that they shouldn't go either. We arrived and received our menus, and then didn't see a waiter again for probably twenty minutes. We had to go find the waiter to see if anyone was planning to take our order. Which, whatever, service was a bit absent but not the end of the world. We were able to order, and our food arrived in a timely manner. The food was okay, it's decent Italian food and they offer family style servings, which was nice for our party. Whenever someone did come by our table, the service was very bizarre. At least twice, someone tried to take my plate away when there was still food on it and I had my fork in my hand, obviously still eating. It took forever to get anything we asked for, and yet somehow we still felt rushed. We asked for the check and the server disappeared for at least half an hour. When the checks finally arrived, they were full of mistakes. I was charged for someone else's dessert, and another person had my appetizer on their bill, etc. At this point we felt like if we sent the checks to be redone we might just never see the server again, so we just handled it amongst ourselves. What made this experience unacceptable was that, at the end of the meal, we had all received our receipts, except one group of three who had shared a family style meal. They put a credit card and cash in with their bill, but they did not receive receipts or the card back. When the owner of the credit card brought this to our server's attention, he immediately became extremely defensive and began yelling at her, cursing and berating her and saying that she had the card. We pointed out that the entire check was gone and had never been returned, and asked for a copy of the receipt to prove that the card had been run. The server could not provide any evidence that he ever took the money to the till. He was so aggressive and rude to our party that we asked for the manager, the table next to us asked for the manager to complain about how we were treated, and another table also approached to defend us. The manager was polite, but did not track down the missing check and just took our friend's name and number. If the staff at That's Amore do not find and return my friend's card to her within the next couple of days, I will suggest that she file a police report for theft. An entire check with a credit card and a large amount of cash does not just mysteriously not make it to the till without either extreme incompetence or actual criminal behavior. I was not satisfied that the manager understood how serious a matter this is. It is well beyond the scope of just an unsatisfied customer. The way we were treated was inexcusable and should never have happened.
So, my partner and I came here last night for our anniversary. It was very nice, the service was very good and everyone was very very kind and pleasant. The food seemed a bit bland to me but overall was not bad at all. The trouble unfortunately comes when we were about to leave... I noticed something moving on the floor at a nearby table and quickly realized it was a mouse. My partner and I watched it run around for a while and eventually it disappeared towards the kitchen. We told our server who seemed quite shocked and assured us he would tell the manager and I do believe he did. At this time we had already paid before seeing the mouse so we just left. Honestly it's such a shame because the place was very cute and everyone was very nice but... A mouse running around the dining area around 8:30pm when people are still sitting and walking about is impossible to overlook.
We did take out for New Years and placed the order at 3:00 for pickup at 7:30. Food tasted like they made it at 3:00…..Food tasted old. Cheese was hard and stale tasting. We have eaten here many times over the years and the food was good. Wont eat here ever again. Maybe new owners? Not sure, but worst Italian food I have had in a while. No one at our party liked it.
😡last night was a ripoff at That’s Amore - I can’t believe my pizza was $33 - never again and they had the nerve to charge me over $11 for gratuity when it took them hours to take my order. I had to hunt down server to take my order and again just to pay. Very disorganized. The band played last night was amazing. They were spectacular. Great 80’s music. I would definitely come again for the band but not to eat there again. So disappointed with this establishment.
