It's like walking into a brewery, but it's a coffee roaster. Why pay your coffee $$$ to a corporation when you can support a local long-time roaster. Coffee beans are roasted onsite, baristas are friendly, and pastries are fresh. Great atmosphere to watch the roasting process. I took a hard-core Starbucks drinker with me, and she is a convert.
If you are looking for a place to get some really good roasted coffee beans, then look no further this place will rock your socks off! Truly amazing service too! My wife and I came here looking for some fresh coffee beans for our espresso machine and this place hit the spot. Not only were we able to choose from a bunch of freshly roasted coffee beans but also you are able to purchase a shot of espresso with the beans you are interested in so you can really tell if you want those beans or not. All in all, this place was amazing!! Oh, and the number of pinball machines... So many!! We'll certainly be coming back! Thank you to the barista for helping us out!!
This place is incredible. The coffee is 👌🏼 and the atmosphere is even better. Love love love Edit: I went recently to get some beans and the employees seemed a little too busy and annoyed to help us with the beans. It left a bitter taste in my mouth. The coffee and beans are still more than worth it, though. Just be ready to push a little for what you want 😅
This is San Antonio’s ultimate coffee haven, blending exceptional brews with an epic pinball arcade. As the city’s oldest roaster since 1979, they serve over 30 single-origin beans and blends, roasted in-house. My nitro cold brew was smooth and flavorful, while the cappuccino’s latte art and velvety texture were perfection. The staff are coffee wizards, guiding you through options like Hario V60 or Turkish-style with a smile, and the fresh beans for sale are a steal. The vibrant, industrial-chic space, complete with roastery views, creates an inviting vibe for everyone from coffee nerds to families. The real kicker? Nearly 40 pinball machines, from retro Atlantis to modern Godzilla Premium, making it one of Texas’ largest collections. At $0.25–$1 per game, the well-maintained machines are a blast —my kids loved Stranger Things, while I battled it out on Dungeon & Dragons, Cactus Canyon and Jaws. With pinball leagues, fresh pastries, and a family-friendly atmosphere with board games, What's Brewing is a San Antonio gem that nails coffee, fun, and community. You’ll leave buzzing and eager to return!
Good coffee and a cool atmosphere. The pinball is a but pricey at $1 per game but still a cool place
If you're ever in a conversation about coffee spots or pinball, this place has you covered but you'll enjoy either here. Top notch on both and don't forget to take some beans home.
I went because I just got a new espresso machine and wanted fresh roasted beans. The person I spoke to was extremely knowledgeable and kind. Enjoyed my visit!
Came here for the first time today. Didn't realize they were the coffee shop we'd buy coffee from at the Pearls Farmer's Market on the weekends. Girlfriend had the cortado. She really enjoyed it (she's very pick about her cortados) I had the iced Sami Latte. I loved that the balance between the honey and espresso. Complimented each other well. The prices are also very fair and affordable. Pinball machines everywhere and some books and chess sets to keep you occupied. Will definitely be coming back.
Visiting from Long Beach & wanted some locally roasted specialty coffee. Our Google search led us to this local gem. Did not disappoint. This place is phenomenal! Asked their story & learned this was started in the 80’s as the first coffee roaster in San Antonio. They opened up a cafe in 2000 and added th pinball arcade. Fun, clean atmosphere. Delicious, locally roasted coffee from many locations. Good merchandise & specialty coffee supplies. Got a pour over (Peru) & single shot of their house espresso. We’ll be back on our next visit!
What’s Brewing is a unique coffee spot hidden in the Harmony Hills neighborhood of San Antonio. The coffee is delicious! The ambiance is fantastic. There are some board games available to play and entire room in the back dedicated to pinball machines. There are also a wide selection of coffee beans to choose from and purchase!
Absolutely delicious coffee. I had decaf and it was still good - that’s RARE. my kids had a GREAT time playing pinball while my wife and I enjoyed our coffee. We are looking forward to coming back. Also, it’s a safe environment for kids - I felt comfortable with letting them walk around there.
2025 Update: What’s Brewing Red Sea blend beans have become the absolute go-to standard for daily at-home coffee, and also for the killer coffee-infused chocolate ganache truffles I make every December. I absolutely adore that blend! But I was superduper stoked to see recently that WB currently has Ethiopia Guji coffee beans!! Ethiopia Guji is literally THE best coffee I’ve EVER had 😍😍 - can’t wait to fire up my fave local roaster’s version of it!! ……………………………………………………….. Even without the killer selection of modern and vintage pinball machines (how often do you get to say THAT about your local coffee joint??) - What's Brewing is *awesome*. The beans are perfectly roasted, either for take-away or for any manner of espresso drinks, and I absolutely LOVE that they have blueberry syrup! Double cappuccino with oat milk and blueberry, Foo Fighters pin ball on the side, is my go-to.
The coffee is straight up some of the best I've ever had and I drink two to three times a day for the past fifteen years. In addition to my caffeine addiction, they also supplant my pinball addiction. Had no idea they even had the arcade and was already convinced it was the coolest coffee shop I've ever been to. Only downside is that they open pretty late for me, but otherwise place is perfect.
We've been here a few times now. Can't beat fresh coffee and pinball. The staff is always nice and the coffee is always good. I try to get a different flavor each time we go which is easy since there are plenty to choose from. They also have some board games available to play if you aren't interested in pinball.
Got a nitro cold brew with some lactose free milk, and I really enjoyed it. They also give large sizes up to 24oz. The baristas were super polite and helpful! They are knowledgeable about different types of beans and methods of brewing coffee. Love dining the the experts. They also have a huge selection of coffee beans and gave me some recommendations that would work well with my espresso machine at home. There are a ton of pinball machines in the back too! It's my first time here, but I'll be back for sure 10/10 experience *Note I was told this was just a small sample of the beans shown in the picture below. They have a HUGE selection in the back. Reasonably priced too, $14/pound. They also deliver for an $8 flat fee regardless of how much you buy.
A hidden gem, satisfied a need for pinball I didn't know I had. The snacks/drinks are pretty great too! Lol
I go to study weekly! The employees are very kind and knowledgeable, it’s a productive atmosphere with with a fun twist, whether you fail or pass your exam, the yummy cafe and addictive pinball selection will always be there for you in the end!
Updated review: we couldn’t stay away from the beans, kolache and quality drinks 🙈 service has been on point the last 3 times and they donate to feral cats so they are redeemed in my book! Old review: We used to love this place to get our coffee and beans, but unfortunately after today’s experience we will not be going back. We waited 15 mins ahead of opening to be there to grab some beans and waited in line for over 20 mins with a mix of patrons who just wanted coffee and those who just wanted to buy beans. There was mass confusion over the line system because there’s a sign that specifically says order beans here and another to order drinks here. One customer ANd another employee or customer even remarked, “if you’re just ordering beans go under that sign” like there’s 2 separate lines…Well there were 3 groups of people (including ours) who waited to order beans and no one ever came and when someone told the cashier 20 mins later she gave a blank look and said we need to wait in the one line all over again. She didn’t even try to get someone to help us or help herself…Needless to say, every person who came to order beans left and we have a horrible taste in our mouth. We will be giving our business to an establishment that respects our time, rectifies the situation and takes down signs that aren’t accurate.
This was the next coffee shop on our list and we had a great experience. After The Art Of Donut, this is the best cortado (Vienna roast) I have had so far and is cheaper than the rest! Matt had “the Sami” iced which was sweetened with honey and very delicious. Atmosphere was very relaxed with plenty of pinball and chess to keep you entertained. Will be returning to purchase some whole beans for home use and of course for a cup of joe👍🏻
Literally went to write this review after taking one swig of my coffee because that's when I knew this place a five-star experience. Absolutely delicious coffee, great atmosphere, and the staff was on it. I'm from out of town, but whenever I come back, I'll be back here for sure.
This is my favorite coffee shop in all of San Antonio, the coffee is smooth and the people are friendly. It's a nice little break for the crazy of the city. Plus, there is no other place I'd rather go to for pinball.
A SA hidden treasure. Coffee was great but when we arrived at 12:00 there weren’t many pastries left. At least 30-40 different pinball tables to choose from, including classics to relatively new releases. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great place for dates and families….although I wouldn’t mind coming back to have all my quarters to myself.
This place has such fun vibes! They take both their coffee and their pinball seriously. The coffee is roasted in house (you can watch through a window). They have a bunch of varieties you can buy by the bag. I ordered a vanilla latte and a croissant. Both were SO good. As far as the pinball goes, there’s SO MANY fun pinball games.
This is officially my new favorite coffee house. I was a little skeptical at first due to it’s location being smack dab in the middle of a warehouse district, but it makes perfect sense. Their coffee is delicious, they have burlap sack after burlap sack of beans, AND it’s a pinball machine safe haven. Grab yourself a fresh latte or whatever strikes your fancy, play some games, or post up at a table or on one of the comfy couches with your laptop or a book.. this place has a ton of space, probably because it isn’t located in a busy strip center. It’s a hidden gem that is totally worth it. The vibe laid back, the staff is kind, service was quick, and it was really really cool getting to wander in the back and see some coffee masters weighing out beans and making coffee magic. Highly recommend.
Really cool coffee house with tons of pinball machines to play! I love how they have non-dairy milks to use in your coffee. Also they regularly partner with the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition which is super cool! They really care about cats at this place. Haven't tried the food yet as when I was there I didn't see any vegan items but hoping they add some soon!
This is such a diamond for San Antonio. Great coffee, great people at the counter, great vibe. I usually buy just the beans knowing the money goes right to the business and the farmer where they pick it up from. I take my family of 3 kids, and 10 bucks for the pin ball machine goes far enough, 20 for a great time. The little ones like the hot coco, which we break up into 3 smaller sizes for them to drink. If you want fresh beans, it really doesn’t get better than this.
My family loved our first time here enjoying our lattes and playing pinball! We didn’t know if it would be a good environment for kids, but there were lots of other kids there and a great family environment. The staff were very helpful in answering questions and helping us feel welcomed.
Their espresso is awesome. I've noticed many local coffee shops brew their beans, which makes sense because this place is OG. You can pop in to get your drink to go, or stay and they'll serve you in a actual cup/mug. There's two whole rooms of pinball machines. The baristas are quick even when there's a long line.
Great selection of coffees. A coffee warehouse turned into coffee shop. One of the more interesting places I've been to. And if you like pinball machines with your coffee, you've hit the jackpot.
Great place for pinball. I would spend 20-30 dollars 2 to 3 time a week. I liked that you could wine games based on score or specials. Now the game are not beatable unless your score is grand champion. There are a lot of very good pinballers who play here staff is nice and games are kept up in good playing condition. It was nice to be able to win a game once in a while
Best coffee in San Antonio, baristas have great energy and are amazing at what they do. My favorite bean is Las Trojas, and they have a huge selection to explore from. Amazing community spot
Hands down best coffee in San Antonio. We get a couple pounds of beans ever two weeks or so, our favorite is Tanzania peaberry. Counter service coffee is excellent as well as is their pastry selection.
Great coffee roaster and shop! I love its unique vibe with all the pinball machines around the shop. There are a lot of board games and books as well. It’s a great place to work and take small relaxing breaks! The coffee is phenomenal as well. We tried to their brew of the day (which is only $2 for all you can drink!!!) and their pumpkin fall flavor which was absolutely delicious! They also have a ton of coffee blends with very different flavor and notes, and the baristas are very knowledgeable about them. Overall amazing coffee shop to do work, and great place to drink and try different coffees!
I always come by at least once or twice a month to get my coffee grounds and the service is always amazing. Definitely try out their selection, they’re all so yummy, especially the costa rica beans.
Excellent coffee, best coffee place in San antonio for sure. High quality beans and great pinball games. The place is set up in a way which allows you to see how the beans are roasted. They do whole sell as well as individual cups. There are tables for coffee drinking. In a separate room, they got a great selection of pinball machine.
This place was really cool! It's in the middle of the industrial district so it's really hidden. The hot chocolate was very good and I had a croissant pastry that was aMAzInG. All the pin ball machines were really fun and only a quarter or 50 cents. They also have some couches and tables and chairs to play boards games. Very unique and cool place to go hang out. They also sold car decals!
I have found my go to place for coffee/tea in San Antonio. Friendly service always have a smile on their faces. Tea came out perfectly, citron green, no sugar necessary. Cinnamon roll was perfect, had pecans and extra flaky. Lesser known perk, largest collection of playable pinball arcades in San Antonio. All bright, attractive, and in pristine condition.
Amazing place to play pinball, and to get a coffee. One of the best publicly available pinball collections in the COUNTRY! Around 50 pins, all well maintained, from the newest releases to older fun electromechanical classics. Games are on coin drop, so you can play just one game, or 20-30 if you’re like me. :)
I had to jump on here as fast as possible and write a review on how amazing this place was. Unmatched vibe, fantastic service, super delicious and high quality coffee. I'll start by saying that they are a coffee shop, roastery, and pinball arcade in one. There is also plenty of space to relax and study. I got their latte with honey (the Sami), and it was one of the greatest drinks I ever had. The freshness and strength of the coffee really came through, and I had to buy some beans to take home! Moreover, they have a great system to get whatever beans you want. At the counter, you can see all the different single-origin beans/blends and order by different amounts. When I went, all the coffee beans were roasted only a few days before! I cannot emphasize enough how amazing this is. The ability to buy beans in smaller portions to have a fresh supply and not waste coffee and money is incredible. I really wish more coffee roasters did it this way. The service was fantastic, the employees were so nice, and they are passionate about what they do! When I get back to San Antonio, this will be my first stop. I cannot say enough good things about this place.
What's Brewing is a top notch Coffee Experience shop. The staff was very friendly & knowledgeable on the products they sell (aside from some of the pastries). They had a multitude of different beans in which to choose from which left me dumbfounded! Atmosphere is very welcoming with plenty of seating in the space they had. They also include a Pinball room with around 15-20 different themed Pinball Machines. There is no doubt that I will be returning to this location!
This Coffee Shop is like no other in San Antonio! Love the Owners, the coffee, and all they do to support coffee farmers across the globe! They are the original coffee roasters, and where so many coffee bars, and grocers, buy their coffee beans from. The pinball machines are so much fun! This is where I buy my coffee to make at home too! Beautiful space and beautiful mission! It’s about more than coffee! 💕🙏🏼☕️
Without a doubt some of the best coffee in town! Best part is it doesn’t stop there. Came here for the coffee and then was surprised to see additional options such as tea, hot chocolate, a few in house made pasties and pinball. Yes, tons and tons of pinball machines. In case you are wondering, I’d say this is pinball paradise. Classics, oldies, all in working condition. Can’t wait to come back!
If you're a pinball fan, this is where you have to be. You absolutely have to come here and play if you're in San Antonio and don't want to go all the way to Austin to play. They even have tournaments and leagues and such, for men, women and children. The coffee is great and you're always bombarded by the smell which is kind of uplifting ha. Drinks are reasonably priced and they can cater to folks for most dietary restrictions. You have to come here and play some pinball, with more than 30 machines there's surely something here for everyone. And yes, there's little stools for kids to use to reach easier.
What an interesting place, roastery/arcade 🤷🏼♂️ if it works it works… as far as the coffee goes they have lots of different roast options, I ordered an iced mocha and a cold brew. Cold brew was great, I was told the mocha was very good too. I don’t like the counter set up it’s kind of crammed into the corner and not much room around it if people are looking at the roasts. Staff was great, very friendly and knowledgeable and got my drinks out pretty fast.
We got the Sami and noisette. Both amazingly good 😊 just the kind ck we need coming from WA. As you walk in you'll be greeted by super friendly staff, 3 pinball rooms, a wall of game boards, and 2 lounges to enjoy this gem of a coffee shop. My family appreciates the LGBTAI+2 feel/vibe. Thank you 🫶
LITERALLY THE BEST LATTE I'VE EVER HAD!!! I'm even about to make a decision to have a second and be neurotically twitchy (kidding, sort of) all day because I had so much caffeine. Worth it! Not to mention the insanely cool amount of awesome pinball machines they have. Definitely my favorite coffee after 10 years in SA!!! Just got here, you'll be happy you did!
Great coffee and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of seating makes it easy to hang out, work, or meet up with friends, and the pinball machines add a unique touch you don’t see at most coffee shops. Solid spot for good coffee and a laid-back vibe.
I didn’t try the coffee here but it looked good. This is actually a very large pinball location with 40ish machines. We played a tournament here and it was a lot of fun. Games are 25 cents to $1 and the games are well maintained. Everyone here was very nice. Would definitely visit again.
This is a great place to hang out for a coffee, have a catch up and of course play pinball. They also have board games to play. They sell a load of freshly roasted coffees by weight and they know how to make any jo nonsense coffee you can think of. Why go to a coffee chain when we have a great place like this?
My husband wanted to stop in to see the locally owned coffee roasting company in SA. It’s an industrial type vibe with various pinball machines to choose from. We enjoyed sipping on our drinks while our teen kids went back in time and played on the machines. I went with a butter pecan matcha, packed with flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness. Unique flavor! Definitely a place we’ll be stopping by more often now. Before we leave picking up some beans to try.
What a great discovery! Loved this coffee shop/roaster from the moment we walked in. They have a great variety of coffee beans freshly roasted on place not to forget the awesome choice of coffee drinks. My husband and I had an iced latte which was out of the world! The bonus…they have pinball machines…so cool! We played a few games while enjoying our lattes!
What a great place to turn our coffee break into a game night. Saw this & thought what a cool idea. It really works! Just the perfect getaway for coffee, tea or even matcha. The matcha drinks have been delightfully smooth & tasty. The amount they use is perfect too, talk about a lovely green color. We tried some drinks here & a few food items. They had some cylindrical chocolate cakes & those were divine. So many coffee beans to choose from, it’s not JUST a coffee shop. Now let’s talk about the fun stuff! Pinball! I don’t think I’ve seen so many pinball game options since I was very young. They have a huge variety, some old ones & some new ones. Great place to have fun on your own or play with friends. Don’t forget to take some quarters & your A game.
What’s Brewing Coffee Roasters is such a cool spot! The atmosphere is fun and laid back with tons of pinball machines that make it perfect for hanging out with family. The industrial vibe is unique and really adds to the experience. The cold brew was great, and the mint chocolate flavor was super refreshing and different. The food was solid, the service was friendly, and the overall vibe made for a memorable visit. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into good coffee, pinball, or just a chill place to relax.
1st time being here and the atmosphere in this place is chill. This is a totally different coffee shop for sure. The vibe and the people here are so nice. Everyone is just doing their thing and chilling. The different pinball machines are a plus. It what makes this place better than other places. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I did have a hot cocoa with extra whip cream and a cinnamon roll which was delicious. I recommend it to anyone who likes coffee..
I truly love it here!! I'm so glad someone told me about this place. This is one of those hidden gems. For us old timers who enjoy that nostalgic feeling of playing in an arcade, so many pinball machines to choose from. I definitely had fun and enjoyed every moment. I especially love how they provide gameboards as well to play while drinking your coffee! I love the whole vibe and atmosphere here, I love how you can watch them thru the glass windows to prepare your coffee beans. I recommend going very early to beat the crowd and kids because it can get crowded. I want to try more drinks here and I'm definitely going to buy their merchandise, they have some unique t-shirts and mugs.
Such a fun place! Not only do they have an amazing selection of beans to choose from to take home or brew there, they have an epic pinball collection! On certain nights, they host pinball leagues in the San Antonio area. They have an expert/professional league, Beginners league, and children's league. There is a wide range of pinball machines. From the classic wooden ones to the modern surround sound full immersive experience ones. The older ones have a little list in the top right hand corner on the machine that tells the year it was made along with a few fun facts. They range in price per game from .25-$1.00. Don't worry about bringing quarters, as they have a change machine ready for any $1-$20 denominations. They provide a large selection of coffee (see picture) to choose from. They will weigh it out for you to take home or they can brew it there. Excellent place to try new coffee or try a flight to see what type of coffee you like best. Our party came in with 7 people from ages 8 years old to 50 years old, and everyone had a fun time. The service here is prompt, friendly and knowledgeable about the coffee they offer and are happy to provide any answers to the style of coffee to recommend. Or any information of the styles of brewing coffee or the coffee itself. We enjoyed both the coffee and games.
They have decent coffee and delicious and espresso and drip coffee and I had a Rice krispie treat chocolate wasn't amazing
Popped into this roasters for beans. A wide range of choices to try several different types of coffee to find what you like best. The team will help direct you to something and answer questions. Space is really cool and you have probably seen the pinball machines. I really want to catch a roasting day and watch. Worth a stop for coffee and conversation.
Very unique concept and location. Coffee and Pinball machines. I didn’t play any but the nostalgia will bring me back to play a few games. The coffee I had was coconut mocha hot … 🔥 Service was cool. There is not a lot of parking in the front but there is a lot of parking in the back. This place feels like a field trip with Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. You get to see them roast and do work or play games. Plenty places to sit and you can buy beans from the soil of many countries.
Forget STARBUCKS! Come and taste the cool sensation of this future TREND-SETTING Java spot. They have a great assortment of varios coffee beans on display to tease your curiosity. They tinkle and display their process flavor experimentation thru a clear glass, which shows their large machinery (like a brewing beer bar but with coffee = cool)... but in the end,who cares, because They simply have very good coffee and many PINBALL MACHINES!!! Is like the child in you found balance with your adult version, and it is called "What's Brewing " I wish them good luck and longevity and, must importantly, growth!
I love coming to this place. Very friendly staff, really like their hot chocolate and their 30 plus pinball machines they have there. This location was very clean and had a good vibe to it, makes you feel right at home. I have brought both family and friends here. Definitely come check this place out.
The concept of this coffee shop is very unique and has potential! However I wish I had read the reviews before coming. Staff seemed very unfriendly or disinterested when taking orders. I had a simple iced latte which tasted below average. Their food selection was pretty limited-only croissants & pigs in the blanket (both looked old). This place has ample amount of space and such a great concept but could really use improvement in their customer service, coffee, and food.
The place itself is very nice, great selection of coffee beans and variety to order there and good flavors. The pinball machines are varied too, great to have a nice afternoon to play with the family. My low rating is on customer service, the baristas were chatting between them while I waited to be helped, when one of them decided to assist me, she went from all smiles with her coworkers to poker face with a "aha, what you want". Not a hi, welcome! Or how can I help..I went and asked how she was doing in case she was having a bad day to acknowledge her, but instead she answered like my question bothered her. I like to sponsor local coffee shops but when you are not welcomed and customer service skills lack empathy is hard to go back, no matter how nice the place is. So easy to say welcome in, how can I help! It improves your experience, even more when you are trying the place for the first time.
I keep coming for the pinball ..But 3 visits in a row money taken or malfunction ends game or a mode is turned off.Rudy ,Mid Evile Mad..just 2 Good coffee over 30 rosted in house,Staff very friendly the best.Always feel welcomed. From Berista to there Techs always kind.A must stop for great coffee and the best. Pinball in San Antonio for sure.35 + machines..Check out Alamo Pinball Leagues .They play here group members very nice talked to a few in Frisco and Kid league too.All plays are a dollar or less with quarters, coin change machines take twenties tens fives ones. Machines change weekly crazy times here..Love my shirt and coffee merchandise too.
Great place to go have delicious coffee but I did see them advertised they will have the big telescope outside on Saturday Nov.16.2024at night. Inviting everyone, so I stopped by ...... No telescope it was inside, to see the FULL MOON. Was disappointed. So we played pinball machines. I also find they are titled to much, taking your money instead of enjoying the game, so that was disappointing. So we went outside and I took pictures with my phone.
What's going on with this place? I ordered an iced mocha, but what I received was basically a chocolate drink with barely any espresso. That's not how I wanted to start my day. I should have asked them to remake it but given the ambiance and the reputation of this coffee company, I expected a lot more. I'll give them one more chance and hope they get it right next time.
The system for managing orders during crowded periods needs improvement. My order was skipped multiple times, and my food was left exposed at the counter without the order number or name being called out. Please look into a more reliable process to ensure efficiency and food safety when the volume is high.
