Opinions de Bar Kamon San Diego
Behind the walls of an unsuspecting bakery is this cool speakeasy specializing in Japanese whiskeys and craft cocktails. A mixologists approach to the cocktail is taken, as fresh ingredients are used. Drinks are well balanced and delicious. Japanese whiskey flights are offered, and there is a good selection. It's a beautiful build with a relaxed vibe. Bartending staff is knowledgeable and skills are beyond your average bartenders. Tasty bites are offered and pair well with drinks. The staff here is friendly and very accommodating. Definitely look into reservations, especially on weekends. If you're in the mood for friendly service, tasty cuisine and good cocktails, check it out. I'll see you there. Bon Appe'tit and cheers!
Very creative and delicious cocktails! Beautiful and peaceful interior, and love how secret the entrance was! I particularly loved the Ube drink, and goat cheese one was also quite unique. Food was decent and not too pricey, but the drinks are definitely where this place shines!
This is a really cool speakeasy! I wanted to explore Japanese Whiskey but hard to find places that have flights of Japanese Specific Whiskeys....this is the place. Our bartender, Amadeus, did a great job telling us all about the different types with the notes of flavors and direcing me to what i am looking for in a whisky. Lots of price ranges for flights. You enter through the bakery and let them know you are here for Kumon and they open a door built into the wall. Cool vibe. Great service and storytelling about the whiskeys. Will definitely be back to explore more!
If you're a big fan of speakeasy with unique concepts, MUST try here! They definitely carry lots of unique japanese whisky, and the bartenders really get the essence of Japanese whisky and know how to showcase it in their cocktails. They play old j-pop songs which I really enjoyed listening with amazing cocktails. Oh also, the small bites were perfectly paired with the whisky — flavorful enough to match, yet subtle enough not to overpower it. Highly recommend!
Located inside Asa Bakery with its doors hidden in the panels. We had to ask the bakery to let us in. Our party of 4 made a reservation for a Tuesday night right when they opened and they already had a couple of parties ahead of us. I highly recommend making a reservation since I see this place getting packed as the night goes on. As with any other downtown SD establishments, give yourself extra time to look for parking since it’s only street parking. There were about 10 bar seats and limited 2-4 person tables. Our party was seated at the couch with two chairs. I enjoyed the Japanese-style environment inside! Great service by Sam and Demi who were both attentive and brought our drinks fairly quickly. They had many unique cocktails listed and we ordered the following: -Ube Jungle Bird ($16): ube foam; enjoyed this drink the most -Ubemoshi Sour ($16) -Sojiros Sprotini ($16): their take on espresso martini; strong Japanese curry flavor at first sip but it was surprisingly good -Jiro Dreams of Breakfast ($15): like a mojito -Tokyo Banana ($16): I enjoyed the taste thought I couldn’t really taste the banana Our party only ordered drinks since we had a dinner reservation after and I’d love to come back to try out their food next time!
Looking for a secret Japanese bar in San Diego?? This speakeasy inside of Asa Bakery instantly transports you to Japan. You can either make a reservation or ask the front cashier to let you in through a door behind a secret wall. I just wanna say not only are the vibes super cool, the crafted cocktails are thoughtfully curated. My favorite is always the trash panda! Sweet drinks, but not too sweet. Food is also available.
My bartender (I think his name was Patrick) was an absolute legend. I started off the night by ordering a Whiskey Highball: simple and on theme given the setting. It was fine, but I found myself wanting to explore something a bit more unconventional with the bitters. I have exactly no clue what to order, but Patrick's got me covered. He whips up something magical: The Trinidad Sour. I'm hooked; it's bitters all night tonight. Next up, the Chartreuse Swizzle, a natural continuation from the Sour also tropical, but lighter and more approachable. I thought I’d stop there, but the last cocktail was the perfect finale: a Black Manhattan that brought me back to what this place is—a great speakeasy featuring Japanese whisky and bartenders who know their craft.
I could write about everything good about Kamon and still would leave something out . Please make reservations as walk-ins are welcome they do get busy fast . The bars food selection is always growing and their drinks selection will never not surprise you in the way the craft cocktails are made and or something on the rocks. Again check this spot out by yourself with friends or a loved one .
This place is everything. We had so much fun trying all the drinks here, they were all SO good, sophisticated, well balanced, and unique. The service was tip top checking on us frequently and bringing food and drinks out fast! I was most surprised at how amazing the bar food is! The only downside is the parking! Street parking downtown is not fun - but thats not their fault. Here’s what we got: The stash - good balanced but boozy, sour with a tangy aftertaste. Keylime pie seems like an accurate description of the flavor 7/10 Tokyo banana - SO smooth, like I could sip this all day! Nice refreshing banana taste, but smells like graham cracker, a little tangy at the end of the sip. There’s just so many layers to this drink. The banana cream on top was also yummy. The salty cracker thing on top was good too 10/10 Umeboshi sour- love the sour foam and the presentation, can definitely taste the campari, but it is fairly fruity and surprisingly good for campari 6/10 Trash panda - can taste coconut well, the durian is also very noticeable but refreshing like a piña colada, not much pineapple taste in my opinion, very cinnamon-y, very creamy 8/10 Food: Tuna tostada - creamy, salty, crunchy, this is sooo good 15/10. The large tuna piece is hard to bite but I suppose kind of keeps it from falling off the tostada Bougie fries - smokey curry ketchup is pretty unique and delicious. Nice shaving of parmesan (although could use even more lol), spicy mayo sauce was also delicious! 10/10 Karaage - good tangy but not as crunchy as expected. I love a nice crunchy outside, its probably because the sauce was poured over rather than separate for dipping. I give it 8/10 for amazing flavor though, the cut is chicken thigh Wagyu surf and turf roll - very good, a little smokey taste from the seared beef on top. Nice sauce, doesnt need any soy sauce because theres already so much flavor. Really nicely balanced flavor 10/10 We will definitely be coming back in the future to try more!
10/10 experience here. The pictures don't don't do any justice. The Whiskey Sour was the best I've ever had. Perfect. The food was delicious. I got the Bougie Fries for an appetizer which had parmesan cheese, truffle salt, parsley, the for the sauces it was Japanese Curry Ketchup, chipotle mentaiko mayo, hokkaido ice cream for dips. My favorite was the Japanese Curry Ketchup. Then I got the Mediterranean Harumaki. Crispy Japanese Spring Rolls with braised lamb, garlic, shiso, onion, mozzarella, served with wasabi tzatziki sauce on the side. A little hot when they came out and had to blow on them, but they were seasoned so perfectly, the dipping sauce was great and the lamb was better than I expected. They were so good I got another order of them. Very excited to come back here and try more of their food items and other specialty drinks. Our server was also super helpful in helping me decide what to order.
Kamon is a relatively new speakeasy cocktail bar inside a bakery in San Diego. The theme here is Japanese bar vibes and the ambiance does a great job of matching that from the display of Suntory whiskies to the zen sand garden in the back. To enter you walk through the hidden door to the right of the bakery. Seating is intimate but because it’s a speakeasy you don’t need to shout which I appreciate. Our server was super helpful and took the time to explain each drink as the menu was fairly extensive. In the end the cocktails we choose were delicious and had such fun Asian inspired spins on them. I recommend trying one or many of them and spending a night here with friends!
Kaon Kraft is an absolute gem! This Japanese-themed speakeasy has a beautiful atmosphere and an amazing vibe that instantly sets the mood. The drinks were outstanding—highly recommend the Nina, which was perfectly crafted, and my partner loved the old fashioned. We also tried the buffalo cauliflower, and it was exceptional. This place is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique and memorable cocktail experience!
super cozy japanese bar, reminiscent of DCP in NYC. creative cocktails, good drinking foods to go with it. bring good company and laughter will be infectious.
We came here late on a Fri night without a res. The hostess and bartenders are truly special. All of them have a passion for making their guests feel special and very welcome. The setting is superb. The drinks are all so unique and delicious. We all had big smiles and felt so lucky and happy that we were there. Thanks for creating a bit of magic for us!

The atmosphere here and the cocktails here were incredible… But what really made this an incredible experience for my wife and I was the bartender, Amadeus. It was clear that he was not only an experienced bartender/mixologist, but he also knew the entire menu off the back of his head, and he was also really personable. When we come back in the future, I hope that Amadeus (or someone of his caliber) is working because it would not have been the same without him. Also, this is the first time I’ve ever left a review for anything in my entire life, so hopefully that speaks volumes.

Absolutely LOVE this cocktail bar. Possibly the best in San Diego. I’ve been here several times and have always gotten amazing service! (Special shoutout to Amadeus who is such a delight!!!) Every cocktail has been amazing but the Lucky Goat may be the best drink I’ve ever had… 10/10 drinks/vibes/service/etc!!

Beautiful!! A wonderful entrance through a Japanese bakery (which is also delicious) and into one of the most calming yet energetic bars I’ve been to. There’s a bamboo garden alongside high quality cocktails and really yummy food. Will become a repeat customer!!

Located inside Asa bakery. We arrived as a walk in and got seating at the bar. Nice vibe with strong craft cocktails for a great price. Unique ingredients like Goat Cheese Gin, Szechuan peppercorn, and pork fat wash. The menu is split up in highball, savory, direct, refreshing, etc. We got Trash panda ($15) under Refreshing page with a mix of durian, lemon, crème de banana, and coconut infused. This was delicious except it was topped off with over flowing ice. Also got Black sesame Old Fashioned ($15). For our second round, we got Umeshu highball ($15) and Kohaku highball ($16). Highball just means that it’s mixed with soda. The Kohaku tastes like a refreshing lemonade. For food we got Korean cucumber salad ($7) and Honey koji Buffalo cauliflower ($14). There’s a private lounge room in the back that seats about 10-15 people. If you want a table, best to rsvp.
Was completely blown away by the interior - absolutely beautiful, classy, and thoughtfully designed. The speakeasy-style entrance was such a fun surprise; we were oblivious to it and stood right in front of it for a bit. Service was outstanding - attentive without being overbearing, with perfect timing on check-ins. The mocktails were delicious, and my husband was happy with his cocktails as well. We only tried the oysters food-wise, but they were solid. Five stars all around for drinks, service, and ambiance. Can’t wait to come back and try more.
Beautiful café & bar. Amadeus greeted us and periodically checked on us. He made great recommendations on food & drink. Any special requests that were made he took care of quickly. The team there keeps up solid standards. Back room has cool ambiance. If you wear a suit and grease your hair, you’ll be yakuza 😂 Cocktails were good. Only one back room to hold 8 person sizes, reserve in advance for that one If you want to eat well, drink well, and tip well, expect $50-60 per head

Interesting concept and vibe! It is a 1920s Japan themed speakeasy. Reservations are highly recommended but maybe you can get a seat early around 5-6 pm. You ask the bakery counter to open the door which is very well hidden. The place itself is nice but the surprise element is so-so, been to more original settings. Inside the place is beautiful with a lot of care in the decor and props. The bar is very professionally set and the cocktails and spirit options perfectly curated. I give it 4-stars because we did not love the cocktails, although they are perfectly crafted and served and the glasses and spirits are top-notch, something in the flavor was not there. Also the setting is nice but not wow. It is worth to go one time but maybe not coming back, cocktails are on the pricier side (I don't think they are overpriced but rather did not love them) so 2 are in order for the 90 minute stay (which is the time limit for reservations). Did not get food but it seemed good, with nice options for pairing and hanging, not a full dinner.
Loved this cozy speakeasy inside of a Japanese bakery. The vibes were very Japanese 1920 prohibition era and it was awesome. The drinks were beautifully crafted and my favourite has to be the Hojicha Negroni (2 months later and I'm still dreaming about it). This was definitely worth a stop in San Diego and loved the atmosphere. The food portions are definitely not small portions, so you can come here hungry and be well fed. I ordered the chicken katsu sandwich and felt like I needed to share it with a 2nd person. Overall, thank you Bar Kamon for being a highlight of my trip.

In town for the weekend and came across this speakeasy! Love that it was a true speakeasy with a hidden entrance. The hostess was super friendly and was able to seat us at the bar within just a few minutes (we didn’t have a reservation). It was a little snug and it took one of the two bartenders some time to acknowledge us and take our orders both times so I’m giving 4 out of 5 stars for these reasons. The hostess really set the bar because she was so nice but the bartenders were just too busy. However the drinks were worth the wait! Great price point and even better taste. We got the pandan and banana cocktails. Will definitely visit when in town and try the food next time, plus more yummy drinks!
3.5 Speakeasy hidden behind a bakery. Offers Japanese inspired drinks and snacks. If you like Japanese whisky and flavors then this is your place. Appetizers were good but nothing wowed me. Service and appearance were great.
