Opinions de Dickey's Barbecue Pit San Diego
First impressions are everything. As I walked in I found the decor and atmosphere of the place both inviting and charming. I informed the guys behind the counter that this was my first time and they were patient and helpful as I made my decisions. The plate of three meats with two dudes was a great option for a first time taste test. The ribs were spot on hour, the chicken moist and tender, and the Polish sausage tasty as expected. The BBQ baked beans were scrumptious and nice and thick. The fact they didn’t water them down to stretch them further was a huge plus. Customers notice that trick and we don’t like it. Thank you Dickey’s for respecting your customers. The potato salad was packed with flavor. Nobody makes as good a potato salad as my mama, but Dickey’s came real close. Kudos on that. The rabies all had a roll of paper towels. No puny napkins. That spoke volumes in confidence. KFC ain’t the only finger licking place in town!!!
First things first... NEW OWNER!!! OWNER is actually IN the restaurant making sure things are done right! Everyone knows this location under the OLD owner was terrible, it is absolutely night & day difference with the NEW OWNER (Nash), he actually cares about doing a great job and making sure you have good food, good portions and reasonable prices! Went in tonight for dinner, they are still getting situated (grand opening is in a couple weeks) but the food was really good, everyone was friendly and the place was CLEAN! So... What'd I have: 3 Meat Plate - Brisket, Polish Sausage and Turkey Brisket - On par with Texas style brisket, not dry and a nice flavor Sausage - Really good, lots of flavor, good grind Turkey - Delicious (and I'm not a turkey fan), most important thing is it is NOT dry at all! Being a Chicago born and raised "red meat guy" I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the turkey was my favorite! (and I don't like turkey!) Sides: FRESH CUT FRIES (my Kryptonite!), they were great, why do more restaurants not make delicious, fresh cut fries?!?!?! Well, they do here, YAY! Green Beans with Onion and Bacon: Delicious, a traditional Texas BBQ side and they do them well here. Portions were generous (unlike the old owner) and the food was all fresh and hot (sides were hot, BBQ is typically "warm" due to the nature of the cook & holding methods) Flavors were good and the sauces are served on the side (as they should be, if you go to a BBQ place and they cover everything in sauce, they are hiding something!) I'm so happy that Dickey's re-opened (under new owners) as they have good food (when they actually put in the effort and care), it is nice to be able to drive less than 10 minutes and get some pretty darn good BBQ... Forget what you knew about this location prior to Jan 2025, it is a completely different story now! Give the new owner a try and let him prove himself, he seems to really have a strong desire to succeed and make this a staple of the area... ***UPDATE*** Feb 18, 2025 - Second photo is tonight... 2 meats and double fries (probably shouldn't have!) Turkey and Polish Sausage... Left stuffed and VERY satisfied, these guys are hitting their groove and doing things right... Great service and great food, so nice to have a good BBQ place close by... If you haven't been here with the new owner, you are missing out on a good place for BBQ... Been here 3 times now since the new owner, keeps getting better! They are really getting dialed in and the food is very good... I hadn't been to this location in years because it was absolutely terrible with the old owner... Night and day difference with this new owner ("Nash") he is in there all the time and is making sure things are done right! Definitely give them a try, well worth it!
Welcome back!! Just tried the Twin Oaks San Marcos Dickey's BBQ Pit under new ownership. I can honestly say the food was outstanding. To get a good feel of what the new ownership brings, we got 2 of the 2 meat plates. We tried the turkey, beef brisket, chicken, and pulled pork. All were wonderful, and the turkey was exceptional... possibly the best turkey I've had. The french fries, they tasted like I had cut up the potatoes and fried them at home! Loved them! Thank you Nash for a most excellent meal...you've won us back!
Fantastic service. The staff was welcoming a friendly. The pretty good prices. AMAZING food.
Came in for lunch and got the 3 meat plate with brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken. All 3 were awesome. The new management is great and I'll definitely be back

Food Was Great! Huge improvement with the new Management. Everything was Delish! The food was just like (maybe better) than the old Dickey's in Dallas. We shared a brisket sandwich and 3-meat platter. They even have new $12 items to attract college students. I was skeptical after reading the reviews but everything is new since last Fall. The manager was super friendly and told us how the new owner is committed to the quality that Dickey's customers expect. We will definitely be back!
We ordered delivery from this Dickey’s and then came in a few days later to eat in. The food was excellent both times. When we came in, we met the owner and he’s an incredibly nice guy working really hard to be successful. The smoked chicken was our favorite meat…so tender and flavorful. My favorite sides were macaroni and cheese and fried okra…both were amazing. The fried okra was phenomenal even when delivered to us (30 minutes away from the location) which is why we came back to eat in and as you can imagine, eating the fried okra fresh on site was amazing. Best bbq food we’ve had in this area.
I feel like there should be new reviews once a new owner takes over. Because let me say, this location has definitely changed. First of, they greet you when you come in, they suggest food items and honor the coupons they send (previous management made it so difficult, like why even send them 😂). Prices are so reasonable and the employees are efficient in bringing your food. Everything was honestly yummy. It's fresh! I guess the only thing I suggest is providing a bit more sauce? I felt so limited when eating my sandwich.
New management really turned the place around. They are very friendly and in the store to make sure things go smoothly which you rarely see. The service was fast they honos corporate promotions, food was hot and was excellent. Fall off the bone ribs, juicy pulled pork, delicious brisket. It's worth the 30 minute trip to come. One day I hope corporate brings back the creamed spinach.
The new management here is super nice. The owner always remembers who you are and everyone who works there is so friendly. Even my six year old asks to go there for lunch because it’s such a nice environment and he loves that they are so kind to him. Food is always delicious!
The cashier was the sweetest and very helpful! The food was great! The pork was soft and tender and the bbq sauce was delicious, I recommend the spicy one! Definitely will be back!!
First time taking my son and the owner came out and delivered the food. Made my son feel comfortable and he said "that man was really nice can we go back?" So I'm definitely going to go back.
The quality of the food and service is spectacular! Totally recommend eating here whenever you are craving bbq and attentive staff!

Picked up BBQ here today. Got some turkey, chicken, and pulled pork. Haven't tried the pork yet. But the poultry was delicious and moist. Poultry is very difficult to get right on a pitt. And they did it right. I am UTTERLY AMAZED at the smoke profile that was achieved. They use a pellet smoker there and getting a rich smoke profile is also difficult with that. They got it right across the board. When I don't feel like doing it myself, this is where I am going to get it.

What a nice find out here in San Marcos!! The food, service, decor, and even the tunes were good! I had the pulled pork slider, which was overflowing with delicious smoked meat. It came with a side, so I got the creamy cole slaw, and that was made just the way I like it. I want to try their brisket next time!

Food Delish! We enjoyed the pulled pork, brisket, mac & cheese, and especially baked potatoes were all packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. 😋 The staff was amazing, and Mesh is the BEST—spreading good vibes and good food all around! 🙌✨ A fine place to dine.
Solid 3 meat plate. Great Mac n cheese. Even better bread rolls. No qualms here - great service and menu offering. Wonderful sauce too. Not as great as some more local non chain bbq, but they do a fine job nontheless. Probably will come back to visit again.

Unfortunately in southern California we don't have a lot of options as far as bbq . I have tried a lot of bbq places in the area and they all disappoint. This place had great brisket. Very smoky and nice bark. Sausage was good and the smoked chicken was juicy and flavorful. I will be back for sure the next time I'm craving some bbq.

I recently visited this establishment and was thoroughly disappointed. The two-meat plate with a drink was overpriced at $30. The jalapeño cheddar sausage tasted like something from a store-bought package, and the turkey breast was dry. The only redeeming qualities were the barbecue sauce and mac & cheese, which unfortunately tasted like it came from the frozen section. Needless to say, I won't be returning.
Have eaten Dickeys at several locations. When visiting San Marcos saw a familiar brand name and stopped for lunch. Ordered pulled pork plate and a chicken Caesar salad. I was the only guest waiting after ordering. I watched the staff moving about and doing several other tasks, none of which included making food. After 20 minutes I asked what was status of order and both employees realized no one was making food. I then watched lettuce being pulled from the store bag, not rinsed or washed, cut on a metal tray and throw into a chili bowl container and topped with some chicken. They pulled the pork from the hot box and threw it in a box and apologized for the wait. I had to ask where the sides of potato and coleslaw were, it was forgotten. They quickly threw it together. I then went to the bbq selection to grab some to go, only to find it cold and the steam tray not working. For $30 I was highly disappointed in the experience. From service, to order fulfillment, to quality.

The food here is flat-out terrible and nowhere near worth the price. The BBQ tastes cheap, reheated, and mass-produced—like something that came out of a microwave instead of a smoker. The meat is fatty, dry, and bland, the sides are flavorless, and the portions are small for what they charge. For the kind of money they ask, you’d expect at least decent BBQ. Instead, you get low-quality food that feels like it was thrown together with the cheapest ingredients possible. It’s an expensive disappointment, and I left feeling ripped off. Save your money—this place is not worth it.
