Quality spot. Small, compact location but service is very fast and they turn over tables quickly. The food was flavorful and filling, I also got the tropical smoothie which had chunks of lychee in it. We got 2 entree’s and 2 apps, for lack of better words, and each plate came with rice. Chili paste on the side if you want more spice! Their menu is labeled for GF / gluten free items so easy to identify. Large menu with lots of options for picky eaters. I got the chasha shamdey and shapta, some of their most popular items and for good reason. Friend got the Ruthang Momo and Gyathuk Takpa and loved their food as well.
Incredible customer service - the nicest humans on planet earth to be honest. I loved stopping in for a quick bite and highly recommend this location. The menus are extensive and easy to read with popular recommendations up on the chalk board. I tried the Sha Momo (pan fried dumplings - I chose beef) which were AMAZING - and then also Gyathuk Takpa. The Gyathuk Takpa was crispy fried noodles and I added shrimp. Both dishes were amazing but the Sha Momo I will definitely order again and again. The crispy noodles were great and my favorite part was the texture.
This quaint unassuming storefront with a slightly dilapidated look right off Houston would be easy to miss. But don't! The simplicity of this place is that it goes for good food. Under the harsh florescent lights and creaky chairs, you'll be served delicious fare at an affordable price ($10-15/ dish). Not quite the same as venturing into the outer boroughs but perhaps the next best thing in the city. We were offered a sampler of the Momos while our server saw us deliberating which one to try. All of them were phenomenal but if I only could pick one it would be the chicken — it offered the richest punch of flavor. There is also a 4% discount if paying with cash. Definitely would go back.
Went here at 830PM on a Saturday, waited 10 min to get a table for 4. Was surprised that we didn't have to wait longer. Food : 10/10. We got momos (veg, chicken), one curry and the veg noodles option. Service : no long wait, food came out quick and was delicious Atmosphere : it's the perfect hole in the wall restaurant with gorgeous paintings of the Himalayan ranges.
The food at this small unassuming restaurant is DELICIOUS! If you're looking for a healthy and hearty meal after spending a little too much money shopping in SoHo, then this is it. The Sha Momo (beef dumplings) are a must. The hot sauce it comes with is quite spicy, but so flavorful and addictive. Cool your tongue with some Lassi or Deysee (rice pudding with yogurt, raisins and strawberries). The restaurant was packed on this Friday evening with people waiting for tables. Try to go before 7pm on busy nights.
In a world where we are now wearing ski goggles that operate as a computer-iphone hybrid to stack on to our reality, it's always refreshing to go to a restaurant where the host is frantically writing down names with a bic pen into a small notepad. The current tech boom kind of lost me at the apple watch, as I found it way too overwhelming to get texts to my wrist ahahaha. I pulled up to Cafe Himalaya fresh out of the steam room hungrier than a 2008 Kobe Bryant, willing to do anything to prove he doesn't need Shaq to win a ring. On a Friday night at primetime, I was told by a short Tibetan looking host/waiter/food runner/busboy hybrid it was a 15-20 minute wait. He was doing it ALL in there shoutout to my boy. I couldn't help but smile when we sat down, as time seemingly hasn't changed this place. I've never been to the Tibetan region of the world, but I can only imagine this is what it would feel like. The dining area of Cafe Himalaya is one 700 sf room (ballpark) that consists of about 20 war torn two tops, a handwritten chalkboard of popular menu items, old pictures of the region littering the walls, and a smell that just feels like you have teleported out of nyc and straight to the Himalayas... not that I've been to the Himalayas but.... a man could dream can't he? We put in Ruthang Momo soup, Chasha Momo, Sha Momo, Chicken Curry, and the Shapta. Everyone kept saying momo this momo that, but momo is just a Tibetan dumpling so don't be intimidated. People just love to sound sophisticated and cultured like that smh… BUT THE MOMO WAS ABSOLUTE HEAT OH MY GOODNESS. I'm still dreaming about the momo soup, which at $5.99 is a mf STEAL! Inflation buster territory. It was 4 traditional Tibetan beef momo in a light broth with some veggies that packed a flavor that warmed my soul. I can't stop thinking about it. Wherever I go I've been seeing that bowl of Ruthang momo soup..... The other 16 Momo (8 beef, 8 chicken) we ordered and demolished were also delicious, but the beef was dubbing the chicken. I feel like everyone likes beef better than chicken though haha. But what do I know? Don't let me tell you how to live your life. My Shapta, which was traditional Tibetan spicy beef w/ veggies and a side of rice, hit the spot as well. Just quality food packed with flavor but not in an overwhelming way... and was a beast portion size for $15.99, albeit not inflation buster territory. The interior here was one of the coziest environments I've been in in the city. Although it was packed, I felt like I could take a breath. Places with character like this calm me down a bit and take me out of the hustle bustle of nyc that can chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful. Alright, I'm doing the most now but I really do love this place. One of my favorite things about nyc is that you can live here for years and never go to a place like this. They are just sitting there, waiting to be found. Hell, I never even thought about Tibetan cuisine until this place haha. But I learned, and I will now proceed to tell everyone with two ears about Momo until they ask "Wait, what's Momo?" just so I can feel superior and say "WAIT.......YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT MOMO!?!?!" Thank you, Cafe Himalaya. Thank you, Momo. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Simply Amazing! It is a tight crowded space, the service is fast and nice. Got the veg (Tsel) Momos pan fried, they tasted very different and nice with the red sauce. Also got the chicken curry (Chasha Shamdey), that was very simple and soothing, just enough tangy and not too spicy. It was great and light with the rice.
This hole in the wall joint has been on my list for a long time! Definitely worth the hype! The food was sooo good! We got the pan fried chicken momo, chili chicken, Thai iced tea and paratha. All of it was excellent and so affordable! Service was fast and so attentive. Definitely will be back and highly recommend. Like sexy redd said, 5/5 this place is a TEN!
I had great time at Cafe Himalaya. A couple of friends and I met up to hang out because we haven't in a while. The food is great, flavorful and tasty. Definitely will come back and try some other entree's. Even the wine was good and overall not very expensive, which is always a good thing. The place is small and outside seating consist of table of four. However they can fit another table outside if needed. So enjoy and you can actually have and hear your conversation ☺️.
This is a New York City mainstay. Getting fresh ingredients and good home style cooking in this town is NOT EASY. This place has had it down for a long time, no nonsense. I am vegetarian / vegan and this place is perfectly accommodating. It is a simple dining room, perfect for a quick bite with friends or solo. Tip generously! Not a lot of gimmick-free restaurants left around. Love the Tibetan vibes. Potatoes, egg noodles, dahl soup etc. always hit the spot. Ginger tea.
We had heard about Cafe Himalaya and decided to give it a try. I was worried that we might have to wait since the place is small and popular. But to our surprise, we were seated quickly without any wait. The restaurant has an authentic feel to it. We started with beef dumplings, which were really tasty. For the main course, I ordered Shapta and my wife had the Gyathuk Ngopa. Both dishes were delicious and not too spicy. I recommend trying the Lassi too, as it helps with the spiciness of the food. Overall, Cafe Himalaya exceeded our expectations, and I highly recommend giving it a visit.
Great food! Everything is so fresh and delicious. Love that half the menu is vegetarian and the other half is non-vegetarian too. The outdoor seating on a brisk summer evening across from the little park was perfect. Tibetan food is so delicious! Like a combination of Indian, Chinese, and Thai. Dumplings looked incredible, the noodles were kinda like lo mein and the stir fry was so good. The service was prompt and courteous. Very reasonably priced too. A great find in the neighborhood. Enjoy
Tibetan restaurant in lower east side specializing in Indo-Chinese-style cuisine. They have momos, curries, noodles, etc. We got five different dishes and split them family style (see photos). Everything was GAS. This place is the real deal/super authentic. The prices were amazing considering this is a sit-down restaurant at NYC and lower east side neighborhood. They give a 4% discount for cash so bring some unless your card gives you 5% cashback. My favorites were the noodles and the curry, but you honestly can’t go wrong with whatever you order. Please do yourself a favor and go here!
Cafe Himalaya received praise so I wanted to experience it. The place combines coziness, tidiness, and exceptionally friendly treatment. The team's attitude toward guests is exceptional. Impressive food quality at fair market prices. I'm already counting days until I return.
I had a a very lovely, satisfying solo meal here tonight. I ordered the gyathuk ngopa and the house made Darjeeling chai tea. It was a perfect portion (for me) and I ate every last pea. I’ve noticed the crossovers in noodles from Xian Foods, Uyghur food in Brighton Beach, and even Italian pasta in Himalayan food — celery, basil, garlic, cabbage, chili sauce, peas, and cumin? In the same vein, It’s unlike anything. The quality of this restaurant is what you can only find in parts of Queens…and the price is right for lower Manhattan. The family who run the show are kind and care about their food. Stop by! And order the Shapta plate too
I’m obsessed with this place. Everything is delicious. Love the thukpa and pan fried momos. I feel like I’m back trekking the Annapurna circuit. Such a great vibe in here. 11/10
They've found their own path instead of following trends. The employees create a warm atmosphere. Great food made fresh without high costs. All diners expressed pleasure with their meals. This Cafe Himalaya exceeds expectations!
is my go to spot when I am in the neighborhood. Everything I have had is so good. There is both comfort and uniqueness in the food that I have honestly not found anywhere else. Favorite dishes. The 19 Chili Dofu is incredible. I ordered it on a whim once and I am not even a big tomato or bell pepper person, which are the two main ingredients, but it is so delicious. I am literally hungry thinking about it as I write this. I also love the Thang and the momos. It is walk in only and often has a line. It can get a little noisy, and the bathroom is down a very steep staircase. Even with that, it is absolutely worth it.
You wouldn’t think much of this place from how small and run down it is. We went by on a Saturday night and it was packed. Quick turn around, got seated in 15-20min. Chili Chicken and Chili Bofu were best items we ordered. The Chai Tea Latte was also amazing. Would definitely go again. Quick and easy service. Super affordable for the area!
My friends and enjoyed the experience and food which was fast, informative and tasty. Our favorite was steamed beef mono dumplings. Honestly all of the beverages are incredibly tasty, we got both versions of lasso, Thai tea, Himalayan tea (very acquired taste reminding us of popcorn). The food was tasty, amazing prices. They add 4% service fee for a card use so that's something to keep on mind. Though I had a great experience!
Fantastic food, so glad I went here over Katz cause that line looked crazy. The chili sauce had a much fresher flavor than normal chili oil and the curry chicken and rice was phenomenal, very unique in its own way. The soup, I cant even remember but ill remember it forever all the same. Crazy right? Definitely worth the trip.
Came here for the dumplings. And they did not disappoint! The place feels like what an authentic restaurant would be like but I’ve never been to Nepal and it’s my first time having Nepalese food. We got ours pan fried - check the photo. They are also available steamed. I’m a connoisseur of dumplings - and i will certainly be back to try more things. And you should come here too! Just note there is no air conditioning in there so it might be hot and a bit crowded. Whatever - you didnt come here for air conditioning you came for some good food!
Loved the authentic Tibetan food. Everything we ordered was so good.
This is by far the best place I have ever been. I have tried four dishes. chili chicken 8/10 chili shrimp 7/10 , and fried noodles (Gyathuk Tapka) 9/10 and last, but definitely not least chicken momos 100/10 , which are pan fried. I absolutely love that best momos in New York City. I would definitely recommend I would goback definitely.
We randomly stumbled upon it and I'm so glad we did! Everything they provided us was absolutely scrumptious. Everything was sharing style which I love and everything came out very quickly. We sat outside on a warm breezy day so that made things even better. Our waiter was helpful with the menu and her recommendations were spot on too. If you're ever in Delancey street looking for a delicious quick bite, this place is it.
Absolutely gem of a place. A hidden part of new york. I would recommend this place over any fancy smancy restaurant in nyc. It's amazing. The food has so much flavor and spicy. The vegetable momos are to die for. The people working here are so sweet and the service is impeccable. I would definitely recommend to a friend. It's not white washed at all and feels totally authentic. Give it a try! You won't be disappointed
This place is so close to my heart! Outstanding food, the warmest staff, and great homely vibes all around. Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu but their dumplings and thukpa are my personal favorites! Oh and their hot sauce is SO GOOD
It was incredibly difficult for me to make a choice of what to get because everything sounded amazing! I'm still dreaming about those pan fried potato dumplings. The tofu and vegetable curry with bean thread noodles was phenomenal as was a crispy noodle dish we also got. Beautiful flavors and hearty portions at great prices.
Rare Tibetan food with a very good price. I haven’t tried Tibetan food even I’m a Chinese. The food taste like home cooked. I’d recommend the dumplings, which you can get half beef and half chicken, and the Tibentan tea with butter and salt.

Their dishes impress. The restaurant stays tidy. Nothing disappoints. Worth experiencing. This restaurant maintains high standards throughout. The workers are both pleasant and well-informed. Each bite delivers unexpected pleasure. The spot is ideally situated and the team treated us well from arrival to departure.
We got the chili chicken, the lamb curry, chai, paratha and mango lassi. Good portions for the price. Everything was delicious and seasoned well. Tasted like home cooking. Entrees came with rice, as real Asian food should. Staff was very chill and attentive but also didn’t come over a million times during dinner which I personally appreciate.
One of the best dumplings or momos' to be precise I've had in nyc. They are not the usual dumplings you could get from a Chinese takeout place. These are authentic, moist and extremely flavorful. Also the hot sauce that came with it was just marvellous. Looking at the restaurant from outside it may seem like any other, but looks are definitely deceptive here. The chef really knows what they are working on. Also tried the fried noodles dish. Equally yummy. Keep up the great food 👍
I tried the veg thukpa and it tasted great. I have an indian tastebud so I had to add some hot sauce (they give it on the side by default), but it was quite flavorful even without it. I wish they added less noodles though. Service was great. Place is a little cramped. Note that they charge extra for credit card payments. Would recommend cash

I'm new to Tibetan food, so I was really excited to try this place that I keep hearing so much about. The food quality was great and the prices were right. To start, we got the beef momos and the tangtsel salad, which was basically a pickled cabbage salad with some nice spices mixed in. Also got the chili chicken, which was a great mix of tomato-based saucy and spicy (don't forget to drizzle the lemon!) My only criticism would be that the chili chicken dish was that the dish was mostly crisp and not enough chicken. Will be back to try some other dishes from the menu.
Pretty small interior w/ a couple of tables. Got take out. Yummy Tibetan food! - Chili chicken ($15.99): 9/10, I really liked the flavor! Would get again - Chasha momo ($12.99): 7/10, yummy, but not as good as my Tibetan friend’s mom’s momos. Prob wouldn’t get again - Mango lassi ($5.50): 6/10, thick, but more yogurt flavor than mango flavor
The food was good. It was my first experience eating Himalayan cuisine. The food has much lighter taste than other near by countries. Overall it is a good try. They also has a large vegetarian and gluten free menu.
Always nice to find nice little eating gems. It was my first time tasting Tibetan food, and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the Shapta and the taste and flavor was off the charts. I'll be back for the traditional soup and the dumplings. The only reason I didn't give it a five is it is a little cramped space wise.
Did not understand the hype 😅 pretty average food and not particularly special. Beef Momos are decent, the veggies monos are lacking in flavor. Also got the goat curry and gyatuk ngopa (sauteed noodles) and they are not bad, but nothing to write home about. The bocha tibetan tea (butter + salt tea) was interesting but it was quite salty, almost like a buttery broth.
Overall it was a good experience! Crowded but cozy and local spot in a popular neighborhood. Despite the vibes the food did not hit the mark. Noodles did not taste like much. It was missing salt and flavor. It tasted like I was eating unseasoned noodles. However, they tried & didn’t skimp on the toppings (I guess). Points are mostly for the vibes !
