Great Japanese place! I come here fairly regularly for lunch, and have come through a few times for dinner. Their service is always quick, even with larger groups, and they take reservations too! Of course this is all on top of having delicious food at a very reasonable price (especially when it comes to the lunch specials).
Extremely delicious food! Especially their udon, beef with poached egg and sukiyaki udon. I wouldn’t say the same thing about the sushi though. Breaks apart easily as you pick it up with chopsticks. Yakitori is great as well, beef tongue, pork cheek, scallops and squid leg karaage. Some good draft and beer too, Sapporo Black is top of my list! But beware they usually packed with people during meal time and weekends, and they are short staffed, so expect waits for seats and service. But staff are extremely friendly and cute!
Sukiyaki Beef Don, Bongole Udon, Carbonara Udon were really tasty but Sukiyaki Beef Udon was a little bit salty. You can enjoy all day happy hour from Monday through Thursday. ($3.5 per dish; Garlic French Fries, Geso(Squid) Garage, Chicken Garaafe, Deep fried Gyoza, Hand Roll(Spicy Tuna or Crunch) etc. and Sapporo Draft beer at $2.95)
Really delicious traditional Japanese fare served up in an unassuming diner located in a corner portion of a large strip mall. Amazing lunch menu served from 11:30AM to 5PM. I got the curry with pork cutlet off the lunch menu which came with miso soup and a salad. Both accoutrement was great although not very large or filling. The curry came with a massive portion of rice and curry and the pork cutlet was cooked well but a little bit too chewy for my taste. My friend got a mackerel off the lunch which also looked quite good. Staff very friendly and the pricing is reasonable. Not a bad spot to grab a quick bite during lunch and their happy hour pricing is also quite nice.
Kamameshi, sushi, udon, ramen, yakitori, appetizers, dessert, and more! What i'm really here for is the kamameshi, discovered this first at their sister restaurant Wa Dining Okan , and was super excited for an added location. Kamameshi - if you have never tried, is a must. Its a clay/stone kettle with rice. I always opt for the pork belly, inside with the rice is little tonkatsu broth, green onions and i think pickled carrots. It comes with an egg that you crack/drop inside and mix up the rice and just enjoy. This would adequately serve 4 as an appetizer, or 2 if you are sharing with sides as a meal. I don't know where else to get this - and actually not worried to find a place as long as Okan has it... Other things we have had, Sushi and hand rolls, chicken karaage and fries (kids love it), edamame, Pork/beef yakitori - everything is always tip top and this place is my go to for Japanese cuisine. The servers are always friendly, however they can get busy so just be patient... The food always makes it worth it! Parking lot is not huge, but we have always found a spot. This location easily doubles their other location, so we have never had to wait more than 10 minutes. Happy Hour M-TH - All Day, drink and appetizer specials!
A small and cozy Japanese restaurant with really good food. The service was absolutely perfect, attentive and welcoming. A lovely spot I’d happily return to.
A friend recommended this, we came in, took a while to order from a very interesting and diverse menu. We ordered udon, shishito peppers, the spicy tuna roll and the house sake. Everything was delicious.
Shin single-handedly saved an entire orphanage, carried an Olympic torch from saving a world leader, received the Nobel Peace prize, all before being the best server here. 11/10 thank you for handling our party of 12.
Super cozy, laidback restaurant, with lots of great Japanese comfort food. The menu is pretty diverse so you can find some dishes here that aren't as common to see, and there's a good drink selection too. We really enjoyed our dinner.
Highly recommend the udon. First bite it made me feel like it’s Mac and cheese and the more I ate, I felt like it’s Alfredo. Super creamy and unique. The salmon roll is very fresh. And the chicken in the curry is super crispy. We finished the three dishes with two adults!
Great food, service and experience. Very authentic Japanese food. We went right before 7 on a Thursday and it wasn’t terribly busy. We were able to get seated quickly. Their appetizer menu is huge and we ordered the beef tongue, the fried nankotsu (chicken cartilage), and the pan fried onigiri (rice ball) with miso, which were all fantastic. For our main courses, my wife ordered the fried kaki (oyster) and I had the chicken nanban, a fried chicken with a tartar sauce style topping. Everything was fantastic that we tried and I wanted to try more. Next time we’re in San Diego we will definitely be back.
When I stepped in they were playing Japanese music from the past few years so huge nostalgia factor to start. Their menu was authentic and the atmosphere definitely fit the bill. The servers were kind and asked if I needed anything or needed to order more food. I thoroughly enjoyed the yakitori, udon, and unagi rice biwl I ordered. Would definitely recommend and plan on eating here again.
Really cool Japanese diner with excellent food and great prices! It's an experience unlike what you usually see in San Diego, both in terms of atmosphere and food. Definitely a must try!
Super good food, fast service, and a relaxed atmosphere, with dark wood walls adorned by Japanese alcohol posters and traditional prints, and J-pop on the radio. The mentai udon was particularly unique and delicious, and will be back to try the carbonara as well.
We were looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant in the San Diego area and we came across Okan Diner. We arrived at the restaurant early for dinner and we were seated right away. First good sign is every staff spoke Japanese and not chinese nor Spanish nor others. The recently offered Yakitori on top of their usual menu. The choices a nice including rib eye, eel, pork belly, and many exotic stuff like liver and tongue etc but all taste awesome just like we had in Tokyo. One of the specialty mentioned was the hot pot rice and it was fantastic. It takes a little longer but totally worth the wait. Adding a poach egg is a must for any hot pot rice! It makes it much more flavorful. The waggu beef takaki is a great appetizer choice! The dessert is a must and they have sesame pudding and green tea mon blanc. All taste great! We will come back for more for sure! Highly recommended to all!

I owe Shin, our waiter for tonight, a life debt for the best service I’ve ever had at a restaurant in my life. He single handedly grew our crops, raised our children, did our homework, made us laugh, and got us our food in record time still steaming. He wins a gold record in serving and if he has a boss who is reading this, he deserves a raise and also maybe a smooch on the cheek. The food was stunning and the prices were great, amazing, will come here again (mostly for Shin)
A small and cozy Japanese restaurant with really good food. The service was absolutely perfect, attentive and welcoming. A lovely spot I’d happily return to.
Okan Diner in Clairemont, San Diego, is a delightful culinary experience. The authentic flavors of their dishes transport you to Japan. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff add to the charm. Don't miss their delicious ramen and other Japanese specialties. A must-visit for food enthusiasts!
The sashimi was very fresh and yummy. Cucumber salad was alright, as the skin was still fully on which gave the cucumber more bitterness than expected. I got the dinner set with the yaki salted salmon, which came with a side of rice, miso soup, and side salad. The salmon was very yummy and light, cooked perfectly. We also tried the sukiyaki udon, which was less soupy than expected, with a savory and a bit sweet sauce. The sauce is thick which adheres to the udon noodles well, and it is a very rich savory dish.
They missed the mark the last time I was here. The karaage was bland and soggy and the miso salmon was quite salty and tasted over cooked. The seaweed around the negitoro hzndroll tasted stale and was soggy. They have a great menu and the atmosphere. This is a really fun place to go with a group to share some dishes. Hope they can pay a bit more attention to the food coming out of the kitchen!
I'm always looking for the next shop that serves good curry besides Japan or Ichiban. The serving was very friendly and the variety of the other dishes were tasty. The yakitori choices were nice to enjoy the different meats. Service can be a hit or miss. My first time here the service was understanding and friendly. The other time the service seemed like they didn't want anyone around. Still the food was great and another place to return and enjoy
Okan Diner in San Diego offers a welcoming spot for Japanese comfort food, especially if you're craving curry. The curry I had was hearty and flavorful, with tender chunks of meat, potatoes, and carrots in a rich, mildly spiced sauce served over sticky rice—perfect for a satisfying meal without being too heavy. The dining area feels casual and cozy, with friendly staff who explain the menu highlights quickly and keep things moving during busy hours. It's a great neighborhood vibe, ideal for solo diners or small groups looking for authentic home-style eats. The curry stood out for its balanced taste, not overly sweet or greasy like some versions, and came with a side of pickled veggies for a fresh contrast.Portions are generous, and simple sides like miso soup added to the comforting experience. Situated conveniently in the heart of San Diego, it's easy to access and offers solid value with meals that leave you full and happy. While the space is straightforward without fancy frills, the quality of the curry and efficient service make it worth a return visit.
Wasn't expecting much, but the food is really great and the service is good. Tables and seating is cramped, but it wasn't crowded. I tried just about every tempura and fried dish they offer, excellent. We also had their specialty dish, I forget the name, my GF loved it. I tried it also and couldn't stop digging in her bowl. The drinks were great as well. Definitely going back.
The food was delicious and served promptly. The service was good and it had a calm and pretty atmostphere. I ordered: 1. takoyaki - starightforward, no frills and delish 2. Tako wasa - excellent balance of octopus to wasabi and slimyness 3. Raw oysters - very fresh Humongo oysters but tons of shell chips in them 4. Uni pasta - rich, decadent and you can taste the uni in every bite. Worth the $19 5. Sukiyaki udon - great ingredients but wayyyy too sweet 6. Asahi beer - oh so refreshing 7. Pudding - perfect ending to a great meal The price was fair and there was no wait when I got there at 6pm on Saturday. The happy hour deals look sweet.
I got the duck ramen and the mixed tempura. Honestly, the tempura is a little big greasy but the amount of food is generous. I enjoy the duck ramen that it’s is flavorful.
We are lucky to get parking and a table immediately around 6pm on a saturday, the restaurant became really busy shortly after we sat down. We ordered the beef tataki, eel rice and the crab and mushroom rice. All dishes are excellent. The black sesame pudding the green tea mont blanc and also very yummy. Would definitely be back again

Nice place to have some quality time with your significant other or your belly if you’re alone. I tried some tofu-steak in mushroom sauce, and it was pretty delicious. I have no idea how i missed out on this yummy entree.

The food has an understated flavor. I recommend they step up their game in this regard. Also, they should rename their "Seafood Hotpot" to "Cabbage Soup".
Okan Diner is a Japanese diner in Clairemont Mesa serving homey cooking and drinks. While the atmosphere is warm and the service is great, the kitchen’s execution was hit-or-miss during our visit. The Hits (Order These) 🥘 Chicken Katsu Curry: Outstanding. The cutlet was golden-crisp and served over hot rice and comforting curry. A well-executed classic. 🍗 Chicken Thigh Yakitori: Hot, juicy, and delicious. 🍣 Uni (Sea Urchin): The standout of the Chirashi bowl, which melted at first taste. The Misses Pork Belly Yakitori: Unevenly cooked and tough. Oroshi Hamburg: The patty was smaller than expected, and the accompanying corn on the cob was served cold, which was an odd choice. Saba Bento: The portion of grilled mackerel was small, and the texture/flavor was slightly sour and soft. It didn't come together for me. Service & Venue ⭐️ Special thanks to Shin for his personable and attentive service. The interior is inviting, with warm wood paneling and tables that give it a cozy feel. Overall A standard Japanese spot with some standout dishes but noticeable consistency issues. Recommend researching the popular dishes ahead of time to avoid the "misses."
Food: 3.5/5 Service and Setting: 2.5/5 Value: 3/5 When I was younger, Okan Diner’s sister location, Wa Dining Okan, was a special treat. All these years later, the stars aligned and it was time for me to try their more casual concept. Located in a busy strip mall, parking is a bit tight but nothing too serious. It is a busy plaza so expect to wait around or park somewhere else. Going in, the restaurant had a design that embodies mid 2010 style. This sort of mix between modern and Japanese motifs with strangely dirty looking would checked all of the boxes. The restaurant felt a bit dingy and dirty but most people are coming here to eat and not enjoy a masterclass in interior design. We came right when they opened for their dinner hours and were seated right away. There were only 2 servers so service was kind, but it was very hard to ask for things as they only seemed to come out when bringing out food. It was just all pretty mid. Geso Kara: 3/5 Geso Kara are deep fried squid legs in a crispy batter. The coating was very dark and had a distinct oily flavor. It was served on top of some greens. The squid itself was not overly tough but did have a good bite and chew. The squeeze of lemon and I believe ponzu sauce that it was served with helped cut the oil. The biggest negative of the dish was that it was very salty. Not inedible, but definitely detracted from the experience. Karaage: 4/5 The Karaage was pretty good. More “traditional” karaage, from what I understand, has a softer coating with distinct blistering and a darker color. Okan Diner’s karaage seemed to be more gently fried and was more texturally similar to Taiwanese popcorn chicken. The flavors were strong and unique, I picked up on lemon, ginger, and sesame as the main points. The dipping sauce was also interesting and tasted like a cross between Japanese sesame and onion vinaigrettes with an extra kick of black pepper. For me, the texture could have been a bit crispier and the chicken pieces larger, but overall a solid dish to get. Oroshi Hamburg: 2.5/5 To start off, know that oroshi means that the dish is served with grated daikon radish to give it a refreshing taste. The hamburg patty itself was fine and was not phenomenal, but was juicy and well seasoned. The true travesties were the salad and rice. The salad was totally wilted and I am sure that they put the greens in the serving bowl to “prep” them. The rice was the greatest disappointment. Overcooked, clumpy, and just sad, Okan Diner surely served me and my family yesterday’s rice that was not even respectfully stored and reheated. Rice is the heart of the dish and the lack of respect shown to it made me feel not respected as a customer. The corn that came out on the same plate as the steak was mushy and not very sweet at all. The miso soup was good. I enjoyed the fried tofu and it truly is really hard to mess up miso soup. Wit hall things said, I really liked their broccoli. It absorbed so much butter and caramelized just a bit to make it one of the tastiest bites I had. Pudding: 4/5 This was a great way to end the meal. The pudding itself was not too sweet and had a luxurious silky texture. A bit eggy and milky, the pudding also gave me fresh tofu vibes. The brown sugar syrup they put on top makes it taste like Filipino Taho a bit. This was probably my favorite item from my meal.

We ordered black sesame ramen. For a ~$14 ramen it really isn’t worth it - there’s barely any meat and no soft boiled egg. The soup was bland with some sesame oil floating on top. Here’s the worst part: the ramen noodle was completely over cooked, it became a paste in the mouth without chewing. I can tell it was the cheap noodle bought from grocery stores. After telling the server about it being overcooked, she brought out a bowl of noodle that is completely different - it is fresh and obviously higher quality. Although I appreciate that they corrected it I think practice like this is just dishonest. (You don’t just a use cheaper ingredient by accident)
The sushi rolls have way too much rice. Also, it's difficult to find parking in area.

I had the sukiyaki hot pot. The soup was way too light for a sukiyaki. The rice was soggy and overcooked. For the dessert ice cream, they kept it too cold, leading to a hard texture. Very disappointing experience.

We have been coming here for decades, and I don’t normally leave 1-star reviews, but we were thoroughly disappointed today with their food, service, and the atmosphere. Salad was NOT fresh, the shrimps were too small / thin, and there were multiple flies flying around us.
