The food is great and tasty. The bathroom is clean not smelly. The only problem is the parking, you'll have to find it and walk a little further.
Managed to get a last-minute reservation and felt quite lucky! The restaurant even followed up to confirm our arrival. The service was excellent—they even poured the sake for us. I loved the heated tray on the table that kept our skewers warm; it’s such a thoughtful touch. The menu has plenty of options, and though the place is small, it feels very cozy and atmospheric. The upside-down umbrellas hanging from the ceiling are a unique touch. One thing to note: it’s quite dim inside, so it’s a bit hard to take photos. If you're taking a group shot, watch out for blurriness!
Had such a great time at Prime BBQ in San Mateo! We ordered the veggie fried rice, cucumber salad, mentaiko stir-fried udon with shrimp, vermicelli scallop with garlic, grilled oyster with garlic, and a bunch of skewers - shishito pepper, wagyu steak with uni, beef tongue, and chicken meatball. We also tried the Thai tea (with the cutest bear on top ) and a bottle of Kubota “Senjyu.” Everything was tasty, but my absolute favorite was the mentaiko udon, the beef tongue skewers, and the chicken meatball. Also, don’t miss their $2 lunch specials (Fri–Sun) for oysters, abalone, and scallops. Super cute space with Labubu decor and a big sake selection.
Cute skewer BBQ spot in San Mateo! They have a great selection of quality meats, seafood, and veggies; everything looked fresh and well-prepared. We focused just on the skewers and the garlic grilled eggplant this time (which was excellent), so I can’t speak to the entrees yet. The skewers were fantastic—perfectly grilled, flavorful, and nicely seasoned. The garlic eggplant was great too: tender, and packed with flavor. The ambience is cozy and stylish, with a fun, upbeat vibe. Despite being busy, the staff was incredibly friendly, which made the whole experience even better. Also, bonus points for the Thai iced tea ice cube bear.
Came on a Sunday after 9pm and there's no wait. We passed by earlier in the day and the wait was over an hour during peak dinner time. Service was very quick and food came out as it was ready. Friendly staff! My favorites were the mentaiko stir fried udon, duck breast, chicken heart, green beans, and grilled whole eggplant. Highly recommend the crispy chicken skin!
All the food we ordered was so good. The variety menu was kind of impressive, and we loved that 😉 it's not Japanese but more Chinese. Order can made my own devices which is easy! My understanding is that they are not accepting reservations, but I found a waiting machine when you arrived. It's better to get earlier to check on your waiting list if you want to secure your table. No outside tables for dogs too. The place was already very crowded - about to be full at 6pm on Friday night. The customer service level was very good, and the staff was friendly and nice. I agree that some other people said the food was too salty, and it was indeed too salty. I hope they can put more spices on the table and customize it themselves. I love the dessert there! They do cook and serve very fresh 😉
Food was amazing. Staff were friendly and service was good. Will definitely go again.

This is a late review but I had to share our Prime bbq experience with you all from 12/20/25.\n\nFood was yummy!!! The wagyu was pricey but each bite was delicious.\n\nThe food warmer in the karaok…
The dishes are delicious. Good service. A bit difficult to find parking. We came here for dinner and all of us like this place.
Big fan of this place. The food is consistently great and the atmosphere inside has a nice relaxed vibe. For appetizers I always go for the crispy chicken skin and the mixed tempura. Both are super…

Came here to celebrate mother's day. We arrived when they just opened. We got seated right away. There are plenty item in the menu. We ordered various items, meat, seafood and veggie. For me the highlight is the fried eggplant and udon. The curry rice is also good. The rest are ok. Typical japanese yakitori. The scallops vermicelli is a bit bland. Pricewise I think a bit pricey but I think it is normal for yakitori.
Asian owned Japanese and Chinese skewer place. Nice staff, the Japanese skewers were better than the Chinese ones. My favorite was actually the shiitake mushroom I forgot to take a picture of. The oyster and scallop were good and fresh. Got a free Thai tea with a cute iced bear for leaving a review, good flavor and not too sweet. (kinda sad only his head was left, looked like he was drowning! lol) The Wagyu and regular beef skewers had too many tendons, made it chewy. The udon had good flavor and chewy consistency. Cute setup and ambiance. Nice staff that check up on you periodically. Food may take a little bit to arrive since they need to grill them all individually. Complimentary Kim Chi and seaweed salad. Has a grill to keep your skewers warm. Scan the QR code to order. They are open late and have happy hour! They also give out free ice cream for a Google review.
(Jan 2025). The food is tasty! Looking at the yakitori, it seemed expensive for the quantity of food. The scallop noodles was small, like 3 inches in diameter so it was like a bite of food...we would not have been full it it wasn't for the rice dishes so make sure to order a variety or it may be pricey. The Thai Tea bear is sooooooo cute. It's a very sweet drink.

The skewers were good, decent price. Skip the chicken karaage though. There was a 5 min wait on a weekend. I'd come back again but wouldnt say it was exceptional but decent.

Place is always packed though wait time is reasonable, menu good. Atmosphere is balance.

I came here for a birthday with a party of 7 people. The food is a bit pricey (total bill around 350$) but I think the food was yummy. I mainly had food from the seafood side and others enjoyed a variety of selections. I personally really enjoyed the shrimp skewers they had, they were a great size and very juicy! I also really liked their tofu and corn. Some foods I think were just okay were the miso soup, shrimp fried rice, and the squid. The scallion portion sizes were rather small for what you're paying. In terms of the the other skewers, I heard the meatballs, pork, lychee bacon, and beef chow mein were excellent. For the service and atmosphere: the service was good, they tended to my party, made sure we had space cleared which prevented clutter, and the food came out quickly. There were some kids running around, playing near our table, and watching us eat. It was fine at first but they became a bit disruptive and were in the way when our food was brought in sometimes. We were in a room in the back and so we asked if it's possible to shut the door but the waiter told us it wouldn't be optimal for bringing in food which is understandable.
This place has potential to be a great spot, but it has a strong, unpleasant odor reminiscent of a bathroom. The food was delicious, but it arrived cold on the second round. The service was decent, but it was slow. Considering the high prices and numerous service flaws, I’m not sure if I’d return.
For all intents and purposes, Japanese yakitori style food served with a few Chinese appetizer options. Prices are very reasonable but the quality matches. Flavors are good but the meat and skewer quality are average, with the prime ribeye, kamo duck and wagyu steak notably disappointing. I did like the agedashi tofu and cold cucumbers. The countertop grill is mainly for display only or for keeping food warm as it’s only lit with candles and the main food is cooked in the kitchen. Most items come out closer to room temp and in bulk but the service is fast. Too many options in San Mateo especially closer to downtown. Prime BBQ accepts credit card including Amex. Reservations are accepted but not required. All seating is indoor only.
We came here as a party of six. The food tasted ok (fried chicken was soggy) but the portions were very very small. It was also very expensive for the amount that we ate. I also was not happy about the additional 18% tip being mandatory. The bill was over $355 and we did not order alcohol. We all left half hungry...hungry enough that we had to go eat dessert to fill our stomachs. Would not come here again.
The price is reasonable and the service is good, almost no waiting time.\n\nWe tried all kind of skewers, all of them taste the same and a bit salty.

Stumbled upon Prime bbq after seeing that they have almost 5 stars, but I personally do not feel the same way after my experience.\n\nA cool, fun vibe - definitely a millennial's playlist playing i…
The gyudon (beef with rice) has the same flavor & portion as the yoshinoya froze pack ($4) and it was sale as $17!? Then I doubt how the other dishes were made. The lamb skewer was awful, doesn’t tastes like lamb. The chick skin tastes good but it was clearly made by frying instead of grilled as its dish name suggested. The chive was surprisingly good with reasonable $2 price.
They offer free ice cream if you leave a 5-star review on Google. But the food was actually terrible! We ordered the skewers, and most of them were burned, with visible black char marks. They also provided free kimchi, but it wasn’t fresh — it was dried out. The grilled beef tripe was not only burnt, but also sliced so thin that it was almost impossible to chew! On top of that, the prices were extremely high. Maybe this is just the Bay Area culture! A very disappointing experience traveling in SF
