Opinions de Roy's San Diego
Sophisticated Hawaiian styled restaurant. To sample the best appetizers, order the Canoe Appetizer for two. Misoyaki butter fish is the best! Service was friendly, attentive from the host to the server. Outdoor seating with view of the Marina and promenade. Martini, specialty drinks & wine list are good.
One of my favorite restaurants when I visit San Diego. Facing the Harbour filled with yachts of every description, with an elegant yet California feel to it. I watched the staff carefully lay out the linens, crystal and China with care. Staff was busy but attentive and genuinely friendly. Food is always exquisitely prepared and presented. I had a whitefish encrusted with macadamia nuts served with perfectly cooked asparagus ( and a good glass of Rose'). My partner had the Filet Mignon. It was cooked medium rare (melt in your mouth), with bock choy and teriyaki scalloped potatoes. Delicious. Try the Pineapple Upside Cake with a scoop of ice cream for desert....
The service was good, the view beautiful, and the food divine! Try the appetizer for two, which had four items, our favorite was the potstickers and ribs. The main entre was delicious. One of is had the fish trio and the other had filet mignon. I reccomend getting the sauteed mushrooms too! We ended with the lava cake and pineapple upside down cake. So amazing! Highly recommend if you have the money to burn and really just love food!
New Year’s Eve Pre Fox dinner was excellent! I did miss the usual items that are served such as their sushi. We had the poke appetizer, Butterfish, filet, and finished it off with the Macadamia nut tart and triple chocolate tart. Everything was delicious. I can’t wait to go back and sample the rest of the menu.
Our absolutely adorable waiter made tonight’s special night. Zach B was INCREDIBLE! Food was amazing, highly recommend the Fish Foursome! (Can’t remember the name) .. Mahi, butter fish, salmon and ahi tuna was scrumptious! Zach made everything perfect tonight! What an absolute amazing waiter! ❤️🫶🏼
This place is simply top notch. The chefs...servers...food runners...Front host...All were very friendly, and accommodating. The staff is so good they almost outshine the fine food to dine.... This is a must stop shop for all of you out of towners... Hawaiian fusion is at its best here, and represents our classy, exquisite, but fantastic, scrumptuous, laid back city/food. I just had my bday here...and can't wait to go back. Thanks to Christian for your awesome service!
Phenomenal menu choices with superb views and service. Most of my party had the eye fillet - lobster tail combo with no complaints. Our party of 14 was accommodated for and food was brought out in about 35 minutes from ordering. The wine was great, but with no Central Otago Pinot Noirs I was left with only a few good choices. Thanks Roy's
We had a wonderful experience. We sat outside the view was beautiful. Our waiter was excellent and everything we ordered was delicious. The filet-mignon was perfectly cooked as ordered. The Ahi was just perfect and full of flavor. And the soufflé was the best. Definitely will be back soon. Excellent dining experience.
This was the first time I visited Roy's in San Diego and was not disappointed. My wife and I were hungry after visiting the 2020 San Diego International Auto Show at the Convention Center. After a short walk we decided to eat here. We were not disappointed. The appetizers, entrees and desserts were absolutely perfect. We enjoyed our food so much. We will definitely be back when in the area. Highly recommended.
Great atmosphere, great view, great service. Good food, and if you happen to stop by on a Wednesday it's half off wine! If you're staying at the hotel (Marriot Marquis) it's a no brainer. . . .if you're not and you're in the area also recommended. I would stick to the seafood, and ribs 😋 very good. Pricey? Yes, but what do you expect from a great location and awesome service. It's worth the price and I would def return when in town.
This place was great and seemed underrated by other reviewers. I typically shy away from restaurants attached to hotel chains but Roy's did not disappoint. Outdoor seating area had a great vibe. We sat at the outdoor bar and had great service and well mixed drinks. The food was outstanding and my only thing to pick on was that the portions were very small for the price. Seafood on the San Diego waterfront at a hotel adjacent restaurant is inherently expensive, but I still felt that the portions could have been increased. We had the chicken spring rolls and the butterfish/braised beef combination. All three melted in your mouth and were full of flavor. I would recommend this Hawaiian Fusion spot to visitors in the area
Roy‘s Restaurant is a nice restaurant right at the Waterfront area in San Diego. The Signature Drink „Roy’s Hawaiian Martini“ was delicious, the Coconut Rum adds an interesting taste to the Classic. Apart from that, the Filet Mignon was on point and even the side was fantastic. The view from the balcony is awesome, the service very good, both friendly and reasonably quick. The prices however are a little too high.
Came to celebrate my birthday here after seeing some of the phenomenal reviews and a recommendation from family. Starting with the appetizer, we ordered the ahi roll which came in six slices. The flavor was very light with some mild spice when you hit the center of the roll. A perfect way to get your taste buds prepped for your main course. I opted for the 8 oz filet after multiple recommendations and was not disappointed. Very tender and melts in your mouth with every bite. The juices complimenting the meat gave a perfect mixture of flavor that makes you want to continue eating this delightful entree. The scalloped potatoes were very thinly cut and lots of cheese flavor, slightly overpowering. There was a vegetable medley to help clear your palate in between bites as well. My girlfriend ordered the salmon which is by far one of the best salmon dishes. I was able to experience. Very rich in flavor and the fish causes your salivary glands to overflow as you wait for your next bite. The salmon came paired with rice, nothing too amazing but just a standard side option when pairing with seafood. Lastly, we come to the dessert. It was enough for four people to share and not being a huge cake person. I was surprised by the balance of flavor in the dish. It wasn't too sweet, which I usually don't like due to sensitive teeth, but I was able to eat all of the cake and ice cream that I served onto my plate. There was enough to cover the four people at our table and have everybody feel satisfied. Overall, it was a very pleasurable experience. Dress code is and if I were to have any criticisms it wouldn't be anything with the food at the restaurant, but rather the parking and location of the restaurant as it is Bayside and not easily accessible without a decent walk. Would absolutely come here again for a special occasion.
This was my first time visiting Roy's and will definitely not be my last. The service is unparalleled! Starting with getting a cool glass of water as soon as you sit down and it being refilled constantly without asking. The server was amazing letting us know how long the desert was taking that night in case we wanted to order it, so we would not wait too long after our entree, the busser offered us coffee as well and we gladly ordered it with our desert. The food was incredible definitely worth your penny, every single staff member was very attentive, I would highly recommend this restaurant, we made reservations for 7:30 and it was the perfect time to see the sun set down in the marina. 10/10. 💎💎💎💎💎 The only small downside was that the Marriot parking lot was full (which is not their fault of course) and we ended up parking in the seaport village parking lot, the hostess gladly offered us a validated ticket anyways in case they could honor it, but we ended up shopping at seaport village and getting validation in one of their stores.
I went there three times in one week. What does that tell you? Okay, I give this food 10/10 across the board. The tempura-fried shrimp and mushroom appetizer was addictive like the best popcorn. It was light, flavorful, and with a nice sweet bite. I tried two separate fish entrees this week, both of which were cooked perfectly so the fish was moist, buttery, and went flawlessly with every sauce and side. My favorite entree was by the rack of lamb though. Unlike a lot of rack of lamb this wasn't super fatty. The meat was cooked exactly how I wanted it, and it had some sort of "shiso mint" flavoring that sounds intense, but it wasn't. And it was mellowed out even more with some silky butternut squash and a lovely, tangy sauce. It was the best rack of lamb I've ever had in any restaurant. Ever. End of story. Just when you think things can't get any better, may I introduce you to the macadamia nut bread pudding. Talk about paradise in a bite! Soft, buttery, luxurious, toasted coconut flakes and coconut ice cream to really bring out the flavor . . . insert pure-happiness smile here. Many people who work there are five-star. What helpful, kind, professional, attentive staff. The manager (a younger guy who I believe is named Ben) is responsible for convincing my party to give the restaurant a second try so soon. And the waitresses we had Christina C, Jaclyn E, and Kristen J are all fantastic at their jobs too! The only flaws of the restaurant are that food doesn't tend to come out hot. While the chefs deserve all the awards for flavor, creativity, and quality; they need to work on the temperature that dishes are when they leave the kitchen. Also, their brunch is misadvertised. 11AM or not, a menu with only lunch and dinner items is not brunch. But hey, that being said, even at room temp or below, the food was so good and the service was so good, I kept coming back. And I hope to come back again soon. What a great menu concept, team, and overall establishment!
A high end restaurant with fabulous food and wine list. Although the prices are high, the food is superb, especially the desserts, sea food, steaks, and sushi rolls. No two Roy's are alike and this location has great lobster potstickers [that the Maui location does not have]. The chocolate lava cake dessert, their signature dessert, is to die for, especially if you are a chocolate lover. Prices are high, but so is superb quality of food, ambience, and service. Good views of the marina too.
Really nice restaurant facing the marina behind the San Diego Marriott Marquis. Went here for lunch to celebrate our anniversary. The food was excellent. Had the Canoe sampler, a salad, and Chilean Sea Bass. The staff gave us a complimentary lava cake for dessert since we were celebrating, took our picture and gave it to us in a card! That was very nice and unexpected. We will definitely be coming back!
I had a great dinner with my family here. This upscale Hawaiian style restaurant does an excellent job with their fish. I had the “Butterfish” which was some of the best fish I had ever had. To begin, it was a really good cut of fish, that was then cooked to a perfect temperature, and the sauce was simple yet absolutely stellar addition. Also on my plate were some veggies and rice. I ate the rice last and used it to soak up the remaining fish sauce. For dessert, we had the chocolate soufflé and the pineapple upside cake. Both were rich with delicious flavors, but the pineapple upside cake achieved a texture so amazing that my words can’t do it justice. The cake had a caramelized pineapple and coconut top that was chewy and delicious. Aside from the food, the service was great. Our waitress, Lauren, was very attentive and friendly. At one point we had ordered an appetizer that took a while to arrive due to a food runner’s error, so she removed it from the bill even though we didn’t complain. I really appreciated the gesture. Overall, it’s a great place— provided your wallet is ready!
Delicious delicious dinner. I had the shellfish sampler & it was absolutely divine. My husband had the scallops and he wasn’t a fan of the mixture of rice and greens (which was enough to make him not like the dish) but the actual scallops were delicious. We had the melting hot chocolate soufflé for dessert and oh my goodness it was SO amazing!!! To drink, I had the P.O.G. Punch- gin, passion fruit, orange & guava juice. Holy moly it was SO delicious I had to get a second. Also, we were there about 2 hours and never felt rushed like they were more concerned with turning over tables- which I REALLY loved so my husband and I could enjoy our time together! And the service was really great!! All in all- a delicious belated valentines celebration with my husband and we left SO full with big smiles ready for a nighttime stroll along the bay! Two thumbs up!
I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! Great service, great food, and even better server. Zach was our waiter for the night and made the evening special. Will definitely be coming back.
Food was excellent. They do seem short staffed it took way longer than normal to receive one of our entrees but they comped our cocktails because of the wait. Staff is great and doing what they can, but I’d expect to be dining their for awhile, wasn’t just our table that had delays. Seems like a common problem there now, which is unfortunate because the food is great.
This place has a great vibe and views for an evening dinner. For someone who is not a lobster lover, I definitely enjoyed their lobster special. It didn't taste too fishy. I got the lobster bisque as an appetizer, lobster scampi as an entree, and the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. There was a lot of flavor in the food and the service was fantastic. If you like chocolate, definitely get the cake it wasn't dry, and paired really well with the ice cream. I will definitely be going back to this place.
Roy’s at the Marriott Marquis in San Diego is the kind of place that makes you wonder, why isn’t this place packed every night?—but also secretly glad it isn’t, so you can keep it to yourself. Let’s start with the Coconut Milk Mojito—a creamy, dreamy, dairy-free delight. I ordered mine skinny (no simple syrup) because, you know, balance. It was perfection: fresh mint, tropical vibes, and just enough booze to remind me I was on vacation. Meanwhile, my 6’1” boyfriend was fully transported to island time after a classic margarita… or two. Strong, smooth, and just the right amount of “let’s book another night at the hotel” energy. For food, I worked my charm (read: big blue eyes and a smile) and convinced the waiter to hook us up with the Canoe for Four—an off-menu, aloha-infused platter of appetizers that will make you want to hula in your seat. Pro tip: order based on your group size unless you’re down to throw hands over the last piece of misoyaki butterfish. Where to sit? If you’re after happy hour deals, park yourself in the bar. If you prefer San Diego waterfront people-watching, snag a table by the waterline. Inside, the dining room is classy—wall of wine, open kitchen, all that jazz—but honestly, why would you sit indoors when you can have sea breezes and prime sunset views? Bottom line: Roy’s is a low-key waterfront gem, perfect for sipping, snacking, and pretending you live the kind of life where this is just your casual Tuesday night spot.
My family and I dined here on Christmas day and got to experience their Christmas menu. We were greeted by the hostess and were immediately seated (we had made a reservation online). We were seated where half our table could see the lovely view outside. Next time we may ask for the patio, because it looked beautiful out there. I ordered the Szechuan Spiced Pork Ribs for my appetizer. The ribs were insanely good and filling. I ordered the 14oz USDA Prime New York Strip as my entree. The steak was medium rare instead of rare, but other than that it tasted great. The mac n cheese that came with it was just okay. For dessert the whole table ordered the Macadamia Nut Bread Pudding which was very good. My sister ordered the Thai-Style Seafood Bouillabaisse as her entree and it was freaking amazing! I will order that next time we dine here. Our server was Kristen, who was awesome. She checked on us regularly and always made sure we were goodbon drinks. She was really helpful with menu recommendations. We parked in the hotel's parking lot and had our parking ticket validated at the restaurant.
We went late on a weekday, around 8:40 pm, and decided to grab a few appetizers and drinks at the bar. This place is fantastic!! The staff was super friendly. They accommodated us and didn’t make us feel rushed at all, even though we were there close to closing. Our bartender walked us through the drinks and menu and gave us some great recommendations. He also let us sample the pineapple used for the famous Pineapple Martini, which is soaked in vodka for two weeks before being used in their drinks! 😍 I would highly recommend the Pineapple 🍍 Martini, I literally could only drink one! All of the food was fabulous, and I would say that the egg rolls were my favorite out of all that we tried. We will be going back for sure!
My wife and I were in San Diego for two reasons, a Michael Buble concert and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have been to Roy’s in various locations and have always enjoyed their Asian cuisine. When we located a Roy’s in San Diego we knew where we would enjoy a great anniversary dinner. This location sits behind the beautiful Marriott Marquis hotel right on San Diego’s waterfront harbor. We were seated at the window row of tables overlooking the harbor and the numerous boat’s moored. We decided on a dinner of appetizers, always a treat at Roy’s. The restaurant atmosphere is quiet and casual. The service is attentive and the items come out of the kitchen fast and hot. For dessert we were treated with the chocolate lava cake accompanied by vanilla ice cream for our anniversary. A sweet surprise! So if you are in San Diego and looking for a great place to dine with a spectacular view, I would highly recommend Roy’s as a restaurant to spend a quiet evening with great food with a view.
Came here with my sales team and there is at least 15 of us. Christina did a phenomenal job not only accommodating our needs but making sure that I was taken care of from a food allergy standpoint. Highly recommend.
Basically, it’s this off-menu, aloha-inspired platter of appetizers that will make you want to hula in your seat 😆. Every bite hits—so fresh, so flavorful, and perfect for sharing. Pro tip: go by your group size, unless you want a low-key food fight over that misoyaki butterfish—it’s that good. Honestly, this platter makes the whole meal feel like a fun, casual celebration. Definitely a must-order if you’re here with friends, because sharing it is half the fun (and the other half is savoring each bite while secretly wishing you had more).
We had the Christmas holiday prefix meals. Well worth it. Appetizers and Entrees were delightful. We savored every bite. Lobster bisque - very flavorful on each spoonful tuna sushi roll - superb crunch and taste profile Filet mignon and lobster tails - impressive Seabass - the best Macadamia nut pudding with guava sauce and ice cream - average Grand Marnier with berries - forgettable Mango lychee margarita - delicious
My sister-in-law made reservations here to celebrate my brother' upcoming birthday. She had sushi and my brother and I shared the Maui Woowie salad and the classic four fish combination. They easily accommodated my nut allergy. The food was so delicious and they brought my brother a key lime cheesecake with a candle which they lit at the table. Hope his wish comes true! Highly recommend this restaurant on the water!
Delicious, relaxing, and beautiful lunch at Roy’s Restaurant in downtown! Such a gorgeous view on the water and the boats, and so calming sitting on the dog friendly outdoor patio. We enjoyed the lobster potstickers, shrimp tempura roll, misoyaki Japanese eggplant & rice cakes with shrimp, and lobster roll. Al the food was excellent. We really like the Hawaiian martini and Mai Tai. Very friendly and accommodating service. Recommend!
This is one of the most beautiful Roy’s and the food was delicious!!! I’ve been to different locations many times over the years and their Misoyaki Butterfish is just incredible and the coconut shrimp was absolutely delicious too! We had the chow mein too and that was good. Then of course the hot lava chocolate cake with raspberries and vanilla ice cream is delicious!!! Beautiful ambiance, really excellent service, and complimentary valet! Arrive early or stick around for sunset and walk down the wooden boardwalk to the beach it’s beautiful!
Scallops were amazing, so were the lobster pot stickers. What a wonderful for a business dinner. Got there early and even though there was a padre game and I don't a trade show at the convention center, we easily got a seat. Highly recommended. [email protected]
If you’ve had your full share of Mexican, Italian, and Continental cuisine, Roy’s will provide a great change of pace. I couldn’t tell you why their check-in and seating process was slow and deliberate despite an empty restaurant at 5:15pm, but I can tell you that I loved the Maui Wowie salad. Fresh black pepper was perfect with the dressing. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Butterfish, with furikake rice, bok choy and a grilled carrot. Great food and there’s ample water and marina views.
I was taken here by a friend in town and was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. It's not what you would think of going to in SD, but the food is good. They also gave us two complementary desserts after messing up the chocolate and pineapple upside-down cake. Which btw tasted like apple pie with the ice cream! Loved it!
10/10 - This Place Knows How to Celebrate! (and Cook!) If I could give Roy's a rating higher than 10/10, I absolutely would! This was our first time dining here, and it also happened to be our anniversary. I'm so glad I noted the special occasion when making the reservation. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm anniversary wishes from the hostess, our server, and even a passing waitress. The service was impeccable – we were treated so well throughout the entire evening. But the real star of the show was the food. It was truly amazing! You can tell the cooks take incredible care with the taste and presentation of each dish. Every single bite was a little piece of heaven. And then there was the anniversary dessert... They called it a lava cake, but I'm pretty sure it was a brownie on crack! Absolutely decadent and delicious. The price point is definitely on the higher side, but honestly, it was worth every single penny. When the bill came, it felt more than reasonable for the experience we had. As we were leaving, a manager came out of the kitchen. While they didn't interact with us extensively, he stopped us to say thank you for coming, welcomed us back, wished us a good evening, and a safe drive home. That was a lovely touch. Our waitress was also incredibly friendly and sweet, making the evening even more special. I cannot recommend Roy's highly enough (I rushed home to share my experience with my adult children. They were mad there were no leftovers.). If you're looking for an exceptional dining experience, especially for a special occasion, look no further! You won't be disappointed.
Roy’s Restaurant is a lavish seafood fine dining place located by the seaside of the Marriott Hotel San Diego. The restaurant has outside and inside seating area. While the dining place outside is colder at night, they have ample fireplace which can be made hotter according to client’s request. The outside dining area is facing the sea, excellent for evening strolling and sunset viewing while enjoying dinner. We had prawn dumpling, crispy octopus and big eye tuna poke for appetisers, and I love the first 2 more than the last one. Then we tried lobster bisque, which I think the highlight of the meal. The bisque is creamy with a hint of spice, topped with crispy croutons and prawns. Next for the main course we ordered roasted macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi (a type of fish). Lobster udon and misoyaki butterfish. The mahi mahi fish is succulent, paired with potatoes and grilled asparagus. Lobster udon combined with capsicum and mushroom tastes great but it tastes a little salty. For dessert we ordered pineapple upside down cake and melting hot chocolate souffle. The melting chocolate was sumptuous, and the warm cake paired nicely with vanilla ice creams. I would highly recommend Roy’s restaurant for fine dining and corporate social gathering.
The food was truly great — well prepared, flavorful, and presented beautifully. You can tell there’s real attention to quality in the kitchen, and each dish felt thoughtfully put together. The space itself is stunning. The design, the ambiance, and especially the view make it a place you want to linger and enjoy the evening. It has that elevated feel that makes dinner feel like an occasion. Service was good overall, though it could have been a bit more attentive at times. Nothing major, just small moments where a little more awareness would have elevated the experience even further. All in all, I’d definitely come back — particularly for dinner and to enjoy that view again.
The food here was really good. Unfortunately service did not match that. Our secondary server was very good but our main server sadly gave us the time of day. We were on outside and laughing and just having fun and we weren't even offered a dessert menu. Lobster bisque is exceptional. The sushi also good. The short rib was amazing and so were the mashed potatoes. Really fun atmosphere.
There with a large group for a late dinner. Server and service were top notch, and we had a great time. Most of the food was solid, with a great mix of flavors and textures. Unfortunately, the filet served as the main was overcooked and tough which took away from the meal. Hopefully was just a one off since we were a large group, and I'd definitely give them another shot.
The food is great, the drinks are great, you will leave feeling satisfied but your wallet will leave feeling empty. We ate there mid afternoon during comic con and they seated us within 20 minutes, but we also sat for long periods of time. We were all really happy with what we ordered, but the price seems higher than what it was worth. I think the cheapest entree was $48.
A vendor took four of us to dinner at Roy’s Restaurant in the Marriott Marquis on Harbor Drive. We started at the outdoor bar because one of us had gift cards won in Hawaii but unusable there … strange, isn’t it that Roy’s gift cards can’t be used in Hawaii. Anyway, the gift cards (plus a sizable tip) got us two Grey Whale gin & tonics and two glasses of Macallan 12. We sat at a nice table set for seven in the middle of the restaurant. Our host ordered two platters of the Canoe for Two, comprised of the signature Szechuan Ribs, Chicken Spring Roll, a sliced Spicy Tuna Roll and Lobster Potstickers. I suggested bottles of Belle Glos Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir; one of our favorite wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Western Monterey county. Entrees included the Misoyaki Butterfish (black cod), Classic Four (grilled Atlantic Salmon, Misoyaki Butterfish, Blackened Ahi and Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi), Roy’s Classic Combo (Misoyaki Butterfish and Braised Beef Short rib), Jumbo Tiger Prawns and some type of crusted sea bass. My Classic Combo was great but the best looking and tasting dish appeared to be the Classic Four I have a hard time bypassing Roy’s braised short rib but I regretted that decision. We ordered two desserts, Roy’s classic Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle (a flourless chocolate cake) and the Pineapple Upside Down Cake. I had a bit of each and they were scrumptious! A cup of coffee finished off the meal for me. Service was fine, the food good … we were surprised that the restaurant wasn’t busier. Thanks go out to our hosts! As to Roy’s in San Diego, recommended at 4-plus stars!
I visited this place because of a father's day celebration. The place is very nice and clean. Payne, the server was very nice. Knowledgeable and friendly. Food, at least the one I ordered, lobster and filet mignon , was not that great. The lobster was not well done and the fillet mignon was dried and tasteless.
Excellent service and beautiful view on the patio overlooking the harbor. Excellent wines by the bottle list. We ordered sushi appetizers and a salad. The sushi was fresh and accented with delicious citrus and spicy sauces. The Caesar salad had a touch of lemon in the dressing to give an extra pop. Great place to enjoy perfect weather while dining on inventive, well executed Asian inspired cuisine.
Roy’s food is consistently above average. It’s been a couple years since I’ve eaten at a Roy’s but was disappointed that this location doesn’t serve the butterfish or blackened ahi as an app. Not sure if that’s company wide specific to this location. The bartender was cool / funny and service was good. It’s a chill vibe at their outside seating and definitely worth checking out. I’ll absolutely be heading back soon-
Our waiter was very nice (thank you Cami!) but our food took ages to come out and we were one of two parties in the dining room. The appetizers were fantastic (lobster bisque, poke, wagyu sushi). Our mains were underwhelming and did not live up to their prices. Dessert was fine, the chocolate souffle was quite good and the pineapple upside cake was meh.
Local eating at Roy’s for the first time. The service was ok, seems like they were understaffed but that’s seems to be the norm for many restaurants lately. The food was Ok- no WOW factor. Would I come back, probably not. Our bill was high for just three of us and the food wasn’t worth the price due to taste.
Just ok. I get it. Others love this place. The food is good and service ok but overall, at lot of hype and quite pricey. If there was a significant difference in seafood quality or service, sure, but for us, just ok when cut through to the core. Our experience was that the service was rushed. It was not individualized. It wasn't busy either. Our special occasion which they made a big deal about on the phone when we reserved was completely missed. And the plating a bit messy and sloppy. The highlight? The Mai Tai. Delightful.
Food is great but boy the service is as slow as the turtles they serve on the menu. Lousy service for the price they're asking. 35 mins for a freaking dessert when they told us it will only take 10 mins. Not the best place if you're waiting to go to an event and still gave yourselves two hours. Definitely going back to Sally's and not Roy's. This place is mediocre
Excellent food, horrendous service. We sat outside at the bar and were greeted warmly by the bartender, but then it all went downhill. We had to flag down somebody to take our drink order, again to take our food order, and a third time to give us our check. I sat with an empty drink for over 20 minutes (that I would have gladly refilled) until we gave up and got the check. The food was really good, but not good enough to make the experience worthwhile. I don't know if the bar was understaffed or what, but something needs to be fixed.
This was a huge disappointment. It took 35 minutes to get an appetizer and the restaurant was 1/2 full. Our server did not check on us once in that 35 minutes. However once she did come back it didn’t take her anytime at at all to get us another glass of wine…guess it was important to get that bill higher for a better tip. Food was decent - not stellar
Came here on a Tuesday afternoon while I was staying at the hotel for a business trip. Service was slow, place itself was beautiful. We got the wedge salad, wagyu burger, tuna poke bowl, and spare ribs. Everything tasted great! Ribs were not warm when they got to the table, and the wagyu burger was overdone. Tuna bowl was perfectly flavored.
The only good thing about Roys restaurant in San Diego is the location. It's a really beautiful setting overlooking the harbor at San Diego bay. The food is way overpriced for what you can get and if they weren't located where they are they would probably be closed down by now. The food I got was below average and expensive. I would never go there again or recommend it to anyone I know.
I've been coming here for years (to include the Roy's (Roy Yamaguchi) in La Jolla and the dining experience now has gotten worse. Made reservations and we arrived at said time. The front host was nice but they all could put on a smile. Very dead in personality which to me is annoying. Greet people ask them how they are doing while you walk them to their table. Our server was also ok. There's no "Aloha" spoken here. I also asked about edamame with the spices and they didn't offer that either. I know the other locations stopped giving edamame unless you ask for it. Food: Misoyaki Butterfish Braised Short Rib The short rib was tender and good in flavor. The butterfish? What happened? It's not like how it used to be. There was no miso flavor. The fish still was soft as how butterfish is but dang no taste at all. I'll label my photo with the most current photo. Lastly, my friend had to ask for another wine glass because there was something floating in the cup. And no, it was not particles from the cork screw. The server ended up charging her for a different glass of wine and mind you we had a bottle. Overall, it was a horrible experience for me.
Maybe my standards are too high, but I was a bit disappointed with my experience. I chose Roy's as it was basically the shortest walk to food and appeared to have a decent menu with zero wait. It was a bit chilly, but I still opted for the outside seating around the bar. Nice feel, but the service left a bit to be desired. This is partially my fault perhaps as I ordered the sushi. Maybe I should've investigated a bit further and selected an alternative menu option? Either way, I'm a sushi fanatic, it's on the menu, I'm eating it. It was by all means edible, just not really that good...? Questionable freshness on the fish perhaps, overall just bland rolls. YMMV, but I struggle to recommend this one.
The food was subpar to say the least. It's more noticeable because of the price point. Over cooked coconut shrimp and no cigar smoking outdoors. This is the type of place to get drinks in a scenic spot (except you can't smoke cigars 🙄). Dine in at your own risk. Never know what to expect with chains, but this one was particularly bad.
I had high expectations after looking up Roy’s and our experience wasn’t bad but it didn’t live up. The best part was the scene and eating right next to the bay was nice. All the staff was nice but service was slow. We ordered the salmon and filet and both were ok but neither was great. The sushi was the best thing we ordered, it was fresh and tasty.
Food, drinks and ambiance were incredible. However there were a few sneaky upcharges that ruined the experience. I very clearly ordered a drink from menu (reef diver for $16), and when the bill came it was double the listed cost (they charged for top shelf which was never requested), they also add an ‘optional’ 5% wellness charge to all tabs. Shouldn’t Roy’s be funding your wellness? Overall experience felt like I was buying a used car - very scammy and don’t plan to return
First time trying Roy's Restaurant, which is on the same property as Marriott Hotel. While walking around the hotel, my wife noticed the food advertising for seafood at Roy's Restaurant. My wife had her heart on lobster and shrimp. I noticed the reviews were all over the chart. I was lazy and didn't want to go somewhere else, so I gave them the benefit of dout, and I ordered takeout (takeout was the wrong choice by me). Who knew? For my wife, Shellfish Sampler* Grilled Maine Lobster Tail - Sea Scallop Teppanyaki Shrimp - Yukon Mash - Blue Crab Basil Cream - Lobster Essence $69.00. According to my wife, the seafood was tasteless. For my dinner, I ordered Roy's Classic Combo Misoyaki 'Butterfish' - Braised Short Rib of Beef $55. The Butterfish was average and lacking natural taste. The Braised Short Rib gave new meaning to "Short." Short in size and two bites, I finished the rib. For the price of the dinner, you would like it to be a prime cut or a bigger portion. My vegetables were also undercooked, and I noticed salty pockets throughout my meal. Unfortunately, I don't think I will return to this restaurant. Maybe other Roy's will have better cuisines/chefs. Expensive lesson $$$$$$$,s. I think they have a great location overlooking the marina, and it would be a better place for drinks and appetizers. Maybe? Epic view.
I’m rating this Roy’s Restaurant 2 stars for many reason. Overall the food did not meet my expectations(I have loved Roy’s and I have been to many other restaurants of their locations). The food came in quickly and that was good. And overall the service was okay too. But quickly we noticed the main issue! There was flies all over us and was on are food and swarming our table. It was disgusting and quickly we lost are appetite! They were in are drinks. That had caused us to not enjoy our meal. It felt very gross and we had to leave the table while waiting for the check to come because of how many flies and bugs there were! I am not sure if they were at other tables too. Later I had talked to one of the managers he told me that they have been struggling with this issue for many months and they still can’t fix it! I was still very disappointed! To me and my family Roy’s was a very nice and tasty restaurant. But at this location it sure did not feel like it! I added photos of the flies and I still feel disappointed!
I very rarely ever feel the need to give bad reviews, but I ame here with my fiancee, and we ordered two entrees, an appetizer and two drinks. The restaurant was dead. Maybe 3 other tables, and took maybe 30 minutes to get our appetizer, but my fiance got her entree with the appetizer, and I ended up waiting another 20 minutes for my food. Keep in mind it was just some chicken kareage tossed in some aoli with some kimchi and bean sprouts. Should take about 5 minutes tops to prepare on a slow day. Service was scarce so it took a hot minute before I could even ask where my food was. By the time I got it, my fiancee was already done eating. The food itself was pretty good once I finally got it. I'm not sure what the cooks were doing, but as a cook myself, I can tell you that there's really no excuse for that level of incompetence. Thankfully the manager was very kind and helpful and fixed the issues to the best of her ability. I think the place has potential, but something needs to give with that kitchen crew.
Another perfectly mediocre meal at the Roy’s. The Manhattan cocktail made with expensive Woodford Reserve bourbon was so sweet it was barely drinkable. The lobster potstickers were overcooked and the accompanying cabbage garnish was dry and not fresh. Auntie Lei's Aloha Roll was bland and soft, as if not fresh. Very disappointing. It would have been disappointing at an inexpensive place, even more disappointing given the prices they charge. The venue is beautiful and the staff is great. Just don’t go for the food.
This was a really surreal experience. I've been to Roy's before, and nothing really prepared me for this. Our server offered us a prix fixe menu, and said to ignore the limited hours. I ordered the Lobster bisque, Roy's Classic Combo, and the Chocolate Torte. The Lobster Bisque was excellent, but everything went awry after that. Two of the three entrees arrived, and the server placed the plates and just said "enjoy" as she walked away. My coworker whose plate had not arrived told us to just start eating. My other coworker offered to share her dish while we waited for the other, but as time passed, it never arrived. No one even came by for us to ask about it. The two dishes that did arrive turned out to be lukewarm at best. We eventually got the server's attention, and she took one plate back and said she'd check on the other. Over 45 minutes had passed since we finished our appetizers now, and I was hungry, so I just ate my food. It took almost an hour and a half to finally get everything settled for the table. The butterfish was pretty good. It was not hot but cooked well. The braised short rib was a little overcooked, but it was fine. Portions, as you can see, for the combo were pretty small. I could definitely have had two of these. The food wasn't hot, the service was pretty bad, but I would attribute this to staffing issues. I think they were really understaffed. I would recommend that y'all check it out if you're interested. The service industry needs some post-covid support.
My husband and our friends made reservations to have dinner at Roy's located off Harbor Drive, San Diego for my birthday dinner. Over the phone the waitress asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and they told her a birthday celebration. Our friend Josh asked about the parking situation and the server at Roy's said valet parking and eating at resturaunt they would "validate" our ticket. Well, when we pulled up we were surprised when the valet told us there was $12 charge for parking for the first 3 hours. I felt like that should have been disclosed over the phone when we asked about it in the first place instead of making it sound like the valet parking was going to be completely compensated for eating at the restaurant. We decided as a group to eat outside on the patio. The table we were sat was poorly lit; yes I know what ambiance is but I would also like to locate and see my food when its served. Towards the end of the meal Josh and James mentioned we were here to celebrate a birthday. Adam B. seemed annoyed that they mentioned that but WHY wasn't that communicated to him when we made RESERVATIONS. The waiter Adam B he was nice and knowledgeable about the menu and then his demeanor changed when the bill came out. He asked if we wanted to split the checks and he politely did so. Both parties had gifts cards to use and that's when our servers attitude changed. Josh had a $50 gift card and my husband and I had a total of $120 gift card to use from a Christmas gift. My husband and I were surprised when he only took off $100 off instead of the $120. Adam made us FEEL like without the gift cards we wouldn't have been able to afford eating at this "high class" establishment and when he brought back the checks he said "you must tip of the original bill and not the total amount after the gift card"! Don't tell US how to tip...California Servers make minimum wage plus their tips, a tip is not an obligation!!! He didn't do anything spectacular or went above and beyond our expectations that warranted a 20% tip. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. The food and service is less than mediocre. The price for their foods does not a reflection on taste, presentation or service. My husband will be giving the manager a call tomorrow about our service. It's sad that there's no longer a standard of customer service especially at a "high end" establishment there should have been a certain expectation and standard on how customers are to be treated and respected. update: EMAILED Cameron from guest services on December 3rd and have not received an email back from the company! Great customer service.
Made a reservation for Valentine’s Day and agreed to the Valentine’s Day set menu. We then waited for a full hour watching other people around us (who came after) eat the set menu before we even got a starter. We left without any food. Either we were forgotten or they just take over an hour to make soup for a set menu (which they should be making the whole time…since it’s a literal SET menu). Extremely disappointed. Listen to the reviews, if you value your time, don’t come here. Or just arrive 2 hours before you actually want to eat.
My family and I came here with a reservation and were utterly disappointed. Being in the restaurant industry I would say we are extremely understanding. First off it took an hour to get our couple of drinks out, not to mention it was just a couple of cocktails but mainly beer and wine which should be fairly quick. The server was extremely lost and rude. We had to order water four times before getting them and after waiting over an hour. Once our order for food was finally taken it took some time (not as long as the drinks) but was terrible for how expensive it is. We all left unsatisfied and still hungry. We love dining and don’t mind spending money when we have good service and good food at minimum. We also asked multiple times for silverware BEFORE AND AFTER receiving our food, asked to turn on the fire and got told multiple times “it’ll be too hot” (which it wasn’t at all). I truly do not have one positive take away from our experience. They need to have a manager running their staff or atleast accommodate the unhappy guests.
We had some of the worst service I have ever experienced... My husband and I took my grandparents (in their 80's) to Roy's to celebrate our wedding that they are unable to travel for. My grandparents have been celebrating their anniversary at Roy's for over 20 years. What should have been a celebratory dinner was ruined by our waitress. She was impatient with my elderly grandparents when they needed help ordering, she never checked on us after our meals arrived, I asked for water twice and ended up walking to the bar and pouring our own water. She was rude, ignored us, impatient, unhelpful, and overall ruined the evening. The one time she was nice and paid any attention was when it was time to tip. Not only did she ruin the evening but she ruined a 20 year tradition for my grandparents as they will NOT return after this experience. Happy to provide her full name but not sure if that's allowed in reviews.
I have enjoyed Roys in many locations, unfortunately the San Diego location is not one of them. I've been there twice now and both times were bad experiences. We went for Valentines dinner last night. It was crowded, to be expected, but both front of the house and back of the house could not handle the work load. We finally walked out after waiting 45 minutes for cold appetizers. Roys was excellent once upon a time, not anymore. I will not go back.
Got seated fairly quickly but that was about the only good part. Took over 15 minutes for our server to come. They forgot one of our drink orders three times and had to ask what it was each time. The patio was cold and only some of the heat lamps worked. Ordered the set Valentine’s Day menu and waited for half an hour before getting any food. Never got the amuse bouche. We received our entrees before our appetizers and had to ask for the appetizer. The entrees were served at room temperature. The flavor was there, it just wasn’t warm. Didn’t even get a steak knife, had to eat steak with a butter knife. The desert was moist in the middle but dry as sand on the ends. Very disappointed. For the same price you can get far better food and service elsewhere. won’t be coming back here again.
