Opinions de Wine Vault & Bistro San Diego
The environment of the restaurant is very intimate in its setting. The courses are paired perfectly with the suggested wine. Overall the experience and the food were excellent and this would definitely be on our list of revisits the next time we are on the west coast.
What a unique and wonderful experience. They pour purpose and intention into creating a new menu every week, treating you to what it feels like to be part of a high quality, culinary family. The best food & wine pairings they create each week from hand-sourcing their freshest ingredients in the marketplace, could truly only be elevated if we were dining there at the restaurant to feel right at home. We tasted an incredible Truffle Chicken dish that surprisingly stole the show among the other dishes, only by an overall collective vote though, because all the plates were so delicious, and perfect in portion. This Truffle Chicken paired well with their suggestion of the featured wine “Ramey Pinot Noir wine” and, wow, I cannot describe to you the delicious smell of Truffle hitting your nose with so much detail before you even taste it. The Lamb Shanks and Syrah wine (also featured by Ramey) paired really well, and wow, the Lamb meat…. If you ever get the chance at this dish, order it, share it, pair it & compare it. The pork tenderloin definitely deserves recognition here, and as a delicate meat to choose as a “take out” dish, this is one to look forward to when they start hosting in person again, or if you book a private event there. The sides that came with each dish… Very impressive. Such savory and complimentary sides, and Im going to leave this a secret for you to experience yourself. Expect uniquely crafted items in ways you are only left wondering… “how?” And, the grande finalé… the dessert! This week was a Cherry Jubilee Cheesecake that brought it all home, and paired with a Spanish Orange Brandy, for those who want to fully indulge in the dessert experience. You might THINK you don’t want Cherries Jubilee with your cheesecake, but I’m telling you now… you don’t know, what you don’t know! Just say YES to everything they’re creating there, just as you would to your family if your family were master chefs who cared about your well being with quality food. You cannot be disappointed here, so, grab some friends, order everything they’re offering that week… and share it in a tasting and pairing experience, like family would. What a pleasure. In a world of restaurants of lost art and care for the body, mind, and spirit… the Wine Vault & Bistro may be the last one standing.
This place is cute and has been a diamond in the rough during this pandemic. They offer take out menus where they pair with a specific winery, offer their wines and then cook a menu to pair with the wine or cocktails! You can order items separately and u can even order wine flights, not whole bottles. It's a wine lovers dream. Their covid measures are top notch when u pick up your food and they offer u an adult beverage while you wait in line 6 feet apart. They even have clean/dirty pens. The wines have all been really good. There hasn't been one that was not drinkable and believe me this pandemic has brought out some undrinkable delivery wines. Haha The food for the most part is excellent. Their home kit gumbo very authentic and tasty. Their short ribs, pulled pork sliders and beef bourginon were amazing. The thai dishes could use a little work. Cost is reasonable. The staff is super friendly. I can't wait until covid is over so I can actually hang out here but until then I have enjoyed this service they have put together. Excellent idea!
Once a week Wine Vault sends out a set 5 course menu that is available for pick up on Friday or Saturday. You can customize your order to exclude any course. Each course is matched to a wine that is available for purchase. Your order comes with instructions on how to reheat and assemble each course. Delicious and creative dishes. Excellently priced bottles of wine. Locally owned.
Fantastic food. While not large portions, the food and wine pairing is mind blowing. I've had similar experiences with food tours in France and Spain; this was a fraction of the cost. Well worth it!
From the steps up to the patio landing, the inside seating and the outside view were nothing less than impressive. I know I live in this city, but for my first time here I felt as if even I was on vacation in a quaint village somewhere. Feeling like you're on top of the city in an intimate setting, you are free to sip wine and eat a meal, while still being able to hear your company. The conversations from the surrounding tables were endless, which is a sign of a comfortable, good time. I was entertained. They were entertained. I loved every bit of it.
Can't say enough good things about this place. We love the food, the wine pairings, the cozy atmosphere and the general ambiance. We live out of town but dine here regularly when we are in town visiting our son and his family.
Currently Wine Vault is offering pre-order only. Get on their email list. They will email menu on Sunday for pick-up the following weekend. They offer wine tastings or bottles and some cocktails geared to their menu. Service is friendly and efficient. Food is excellent.
The value for the money can't be beat. The five course meal Saturday night with wine pairings was excellent. The flavors of the dishes were really well composed. We can't wait to return.
We've had many dinners here with friends and family. Each experience is unique and wonderful. It's one of my favorites.
Another fabulous, 5-course, Saturday night dinner at this restaurant. Each course is paired with a wine that really complements it. The chocolate lovers raved about the pots de creme. My favorite was the lobster poached in butter and lemon paired with an okay Chardonnay.
This restaurant is truly amazing in the value and quality it delivers. The wines are very reasonably priced by the bottle, but there is a $10 corkage fee - still cheaper than most. A lot of people have commented on small servings. We found the servings just right, and probably still more than any normal person needs to eat. Every dish was attractive and perfectly cooked. Overall it was a fabulous experience, we will come back often with friends.
First visited eight years ago when we moved to San Diego. Today it is far and away our favorite place to go for dinner on a night out! Their three course menus constantly present new, novel, and delicious combinations. Paired with a wine flight, and it is a total pleasure. Regular wine maker dinners provide even more innovative delights. My unqualified recommendation!
I had a fantastic night out here. Came for their Thursday night 3-course wine pairing/dinner. We both got a different dinners, so i got to try 6 dishes and they were all excellent. The suggested wine pairings were all excellent. Very impressed by some really interesting wines. Service was prompt and friendly, but they also left us alone when we just wanted a bit of time. A bit sad they didn't have coffee after dinner, but we were directed nearby to Gelato Vera. This could easily become a favorite spot!
This is my absolute favorite place in San Diego. First, they are only open regularly Thurs - Sat evenings so you need to plan ahead. They staff based on reservations so make sure that you make yours. The neat part of this restaurant, its a pre-fixed 3 course menu each night for $25. For an additional $15, you can have a wine pairing with your dinner. You can't beat the prices and they are very generous with their wine pours. You get a full glass of wine with each course. They have a calendar with their events and menus up on their website. The environment inside is so cozy and warm. They have low level light and farmhouse tables against the walls. Their for sale wine selection is on shelves above the table. They also have an outside dining area but we have always been seated inside. This is a great date night restaurant and I can't recommend it enough. For a foodie and wino like myself, this is the best of all worlds for me!
Fantastic food and wine pairings. The wine pairings are definitely worth the price. Not surprising given that it is a tasting menu -- but you might want to plan on stopping off somewhere for a small dessert afterwards. Though the plates served are small, they are inventive, flavorful, and absolutely enjoyable.
Came across this place when planning our trip to San Diego, and it did not disappoint! You must CALL to make a reservation (no online form, no email), and the menu is set on most nights. If you're particular about food, etc, may not be the place for you as they do not make substitutions. BUT, if you simply enjoy great food with a great balance of flavor served in a relaxed atmosphere this is a great option. Call ahead for the reservation, and then let the team at the Wine Vault and Bistro take it from there. You will not be disappointed! Or rushed, or hurried, or hungry. Last point I'll add is I felt this place was very reasonably priced -$42.50 for all 5 courses plus $20 if you'd like to pair with wine. Compared to our hotel which was charging $30 for a mediocre burger.
This place is great. Went for Restaurant Week and was pleasantly surprised by the decor... great feeling of eating outdoors on a patio. The food was excellent, although slightly smaller portions than I expected. The menu as a $20 restaurant week menu, so perhaps thats why. Definitely enjoy the wine / beer... pairing if you're feeling up to it. Makes the meal that much more interesting. Definitely a gem of a place in a great area for restaurants!
If this place was closer to home I'd need to get a second job! The pairing of a specially created menu to wine is amazing. In December I went to the "best wines of the year" dinner and wasn't disappointed (again - been there many times). Though I only make it a couple times a year I'm greeted like family. They have reasonable prices for dinners most weekends and special wine maker events throughout the year. A Foxen dinner is how we discovered this restaurant many years ago. Keep coming back for more, and never disappointed!
Been here many times. Really like the concept of a limited themed menu paired with wines. Have never been disappointed by the food. Usually there are two choices for each course and my spouse and I select different ones so we get to taste it all. The only small downside is parking can be tight in the area so rideshare or come a bit early.
One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. It's a hidden gem known by word of mouth. They have great meals that are paired perfectly with wine. Their wine maker dinners are amazing. They've adapted to Covid and now have take out on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately there is no outside seating so it is only take away. Also try their mixed drinks. Their Manhattans are wonderful.
Love love love this place! I finally went last night after friends have been raving about it for years. The food is amazing. They do wine pairing dinners with reasonable wines you could buy at a store or from them. The food is amazing. I can't wait to go back to this place.
Have wanted to try this spot out for years and finally had a chance to last year. It was everything I expected and more! Really a bargain for the quality of food, wine pairings and in the case of our winemaker's dinner - the attention you get from the winemakers themselves. The owners are very knowledgeable and make sure everyone has a great time. We were seated at a communal table where we enjoyed everyone's company. Loved the space and homey feel of the restaurant. And thought it was amazing that the chefs never cook the same thing twice - what talent! Looking forward to another dinner here soon.
Amazing! Favorite place to have dinner/date night. Wine pairings are on point! Food is well flavored and perfectly cooked! The best part is that the owners are GREAT people. I like to give my business to deserving owners and this family is simply AMAZING.
Who ever have this place four stars are idiots. So we went on a Saturday nite. They had one thing on the menu - a five course sampling (3 to 5 oz) of the chef's choice. You get to taste things you would never order as a salad, an entree, or a desert. We also paired each course with a different sample of wine (3 oz pour). $35 per plate plus $20 for wine - very well worth it.
My favorite is the prix fixe menus with paired wines. Excellent food paired with WV&B curated wines for a price that is more than reasonable. Cozy atmosphere highlighting wines and other beverages for purchase. This place is my secret gourmand hangout so don't tell anyone. They also host other events around wine and beer on-site and hosted travel tours for wine and spirits
Excellent experience. We had the three course menu, with the wine pairing. Servers and staff made us feel welcome and were knowledgeable about all menu options. The sea bass was one of the best seafood dishes I have had. Everything was so fresh. The available wines were all great additions to the meal. Perfect ambiance for a date night. If you are in San Diego, this is a must visit.
We went for a Thursday night special dinner and wine pairing. The atmosphere is very quiet and cozy. The candle light makes the mood relaxing and romantic. The food was excellent it came out in three courses. The waiter was attentive and everything came out on time and at the correct temperature. There was a private party in the entrance area and the place would make a wonderful venue for a party. 2 1/2 hours went by really fast. Had a great time would go back again And recommend it for a great evening where you can actually enjoy the food and the drink and your company.
I think I’ve found my new favorite restaurant. Walking in immediately I fell in love. It’s so quaint and romantic. I love candles and burning fires and they had both. The staff greeted you welcomely and sat you down immediately. This is because it’s a reservation only restaurant. As I sat down I was served with water, hot fresh bread/ butter and a complementary glass of champagne. My visit was during restaurant week and the menu was incredible. The wine pairings was a perfect match. I enjoyed every bite; rich and exotic flavors, perfectly cooked, heaven in every bite.
What an incredible experience. We had a delicious meal with wine pairing for the prize of OK food and crappie wine in other places. Great atmosphere. Wild Salmon was amazing. My new favorite spot in San Diego.
Such a gem, fantastic food and wine pairings and the owners are fantastic people. The service is always great. The winemaker dinners are informative and fun.
During COVID, Wine Vault & Bistro is doing epic take-out orders. Great value, great quality. Their bottle wine prices are better than grocery stores, insane. Dont miss out!
This is my favorite restaurant ever. We've flown from Seattle just to have a special dinner at the Wine Vault. Recently I was in town and tried their take out service and was skeptical that the reheating would hold up to how amazing the dishes were pre-pandemic and I was pleasantly surprised. I love that they choose the wines first then come up with a menu of unique flavors to best pair with the wines (instead of the other way around like most restaurants). Pre-pandemic the tasting menu dishes were generous tapas-sized but combined as a 5 course meal, I always came away quite full. Now as take out, they are large full meal sizes for each dish. The staff there is amazing - friendly, helpful & generous.
What a sublime experience. This airy, unpretentious atmosphere made it feel like we were at a friends summer cabin for dinner. We did one of their Saturday night 5-course dinners -- inventive, fresh ideas every week, really outstanding wine pairings, and each protein was flawlessly cooked. The staff couldn't have been more friendly or attentive, and the price was more than fair for the experience and quality. I am looking forward to returning and recommending to all of my friends in the area!
The best food and wine pairings in San Diego. Love Mary & Chris, the proprietors, who always welcome us warmly ... and the curated selection of wines with food we always enjoy immensely!
Love the small, tight menu; 3 apps, 3 mains & 3 desserts. Who doesn’t love sticky toffee pudding and theirs was spectacular. Intimate space. Attentive service. Great wine buy options. We were jazzed to secure a reservation, even at 6pm, and it did not disappoint! Fantastic experience and incredibly priced with wine pairings - will be back.
Such a fun and enjoyable dinner! Loved the pairings. Menu changes each night. The 3rd course shown was my favorite!
Prix fixe menu for 40 dollars! Wine pairing for an additional 20. What a great deal. Food was amazing too!
Wow! Very beautiful and romantic environment! Everyone is very attentive and charasmatic! Samantha was my server and she is phenomenal. She walked me through the menu, pairings etc. She really went above and beyond to make sure I had the best experience! Very impressed and I highly recommend.
This is a small place that was recommended by a colleague. I must say if you want a great romantic dinner, or are looking for exceptional food and wine pairings go here. Can't wait to go back next time my wife and I are in town.
Amazing Restaurant. Food pairing incredible !!! We will be back 💯👍

Great food and great wine at an awesome price. Must come back!
I had an amazing first experience there last night. We had a 7 course meal that was perfectly matched with a variety of French wines. I really enjoyed myself. The Wine importer, owner of the restaurant and the chief all made their rounds and spoke to us about all aspects of the meal and preparation. I would love to go back!
This is absolutely and without a doubt the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. My wife and I went here on our honeymoon last fall, and this place lived up to the hype. The owners and staff are outstanding. They were a few minutes late seating up at our reservation time, so they gave us complementary champagne. Each course of our meal came with a perfectly paired wine, and the food was the freshest and highest quality I have ever had. Will certainly be returning here next time in in SD!

Nice Prix-Fixe menu style romantic atmosphere. We went for a birthday dinner, 8 couples, the staff seemed annoyed with us. I don't know if it was because we were not dressed to the 9s, but rather nicely dressed for a dinner out. Or because they are a bit pretentious. But the food was good, the butter a bit over salted for the table. Wine pairings were done well, as well as a good selection.
Reservations in advance are helpful to get a spot at this dinner only place. They also update their website with the latest menu items. I recommend doing the wine pairing with the meal - it is worth it! Some items on the seasonal menu are definitely better than others but the courses are small enough and sufficient that you should get full by the end. Great lighting and makes it feel like a casually elegant date night.
Was not a fan of the menu the night I went. However the whole atmosphere is amazing. The wait staff was friendly and informative. I will definitely have to come back another time to try a different menu.
