Opinions de Compton's Coffee House San Francisco
crisp, clean and friendly aesthetic. the two staff members were super sweet and helpful. it’s a cute place to grab coffee with a friend or even get some work done. i got a peppermint ice tea and was not disappointed, i would highly recommend. the barista mentioned others who come by here to get work done. although it’s a small space, there’s quite a bit of indoor and outdoor seating. the seating toward the back on the long table has outlets.
I was so happy find a small, local, & family owned coffee shop within a short walk from UCSF Mt. Zion. I ordered my go to midday pick-me-up: a dirty chai with oat milk. The chai they use is mildly spicy and is perfect with a shot of espresso and oatly oatmilk which gives it a touch of sweetness. I'll definitely be back for my lunch breaks!
A very trendy and modern little coffee shop surrounding by tons of things to do in San Francisco! We drove here from our hotel and found parking quite quickly for the morning. It was only a few minutes to japantown from there, so we fed the meters on very little quarters happily and had breakfast !! Super quick service, a good selection of both classic and unique drinks, with delicious bakery items that taste fresh and flaky!! One downside is they do not put lids on the cups, they supply them, but with how full the cups are, a mess is inevitable.
A really cozy cafe that allows customers to stay both indoor and outdoor seating. The oat milk latte I ordered was good and I like the rich flavor of the espresso which would not be covered by the flavor of oat milk. Last but not least, it's perfect if you want to work here. They offer free and high-speed wifi here.
My favorite coffee shop in the city. My order is the Cardamom Rose Latte with Oatmilk and an extra shot of espresso. They also have incredible pastries. I wish they had more vegan and gluten free selections, but I would consistently rate them 5 stars just for the coffee and the pastries they currently have.
The coffee is great, of course, but the people working here went above and beyond to have good customer service. When I mentioned to my partner that I would share my coffee with them, they offered to split it into two cups. That's never happened before and I really appreciated it.
Chill spot with friendly staff, decent coffee and small pastries. They have outdoor parklets if the weather permits. The inside seating ain’t made for parties but has comfy seat pads. Wifi if you are looking to hang for a little bit. Water bottles available for purchase with a few other random drinks.
I had my first visit to Compton’s Coffeehouse at the recommendation of a friend. I rarely leave a place thinking, “Oh I HAVE to leave a review”, but here we are. The coffee was excellent, the atmosphere welcoming but omg the staff was so friendly and kind. Thank you. ☕️. I’ll be back for sure.
The best coffee in town! This gem on Fillmore Street is absolutely my favorite place for great coffee, drinks, and coffee beans. The price is unmatched for the quality of taste. Everyone working here is really patient and friendly, with each having a great personality. They work flawlessly, making sure your drink is nice and warm and fast. It is pretty narrow and gets filled all the time (but let’s focus on the “pretty” part), which only makes you feel cozier. They offer outdoor seating as well. Absolutely recommend this place, don’t miss this one.
Latte was great, the vegan bread I got was also good. There are a handful of seats indoors and also some seats outside. On a Saturday morning indoors was quite crowded, and it was definitely "wait 10+ minutes for a drink" not "grab and dash", but it's a weekend, all good. This isn't my neighborhood but I would drop by again next time I'm up Fillmore and looking for a coffee.
Ordered two vanilla lattes, half sweet for my best friend and I during a walk in town. We both agreed that the coffees were impeccable. So delicious. Made with love by friendly staff also, two of the cutest ladies with gorgeous tattoo work who just looked happy to be there and made beautiful art in the lattes. I noticed this place uses "Variety" brand coffee. It inspired me to order some online.
Ok let's just say I was impressed with their raspberry matcha latte!! Visiting Japantown and was about to drive 2 hours back home, so needed my early AM caffeine fix. My sister suggested we stop by here. Once inside I went for something I usually don't go for, I don't know why but I ignored the high caffeine need I wanted for the raspberry matcha latte. I lucked out since there was only 1 person ahead of me, I hear it's a popular spot and the line is usually out the door. Service was fast, staff was welcoming. Once outside I proceeded to stir and eventually taste the drink and to my surprise, Wow! After many attempts at other places, this drink always lacked something for me and eventually gave up on it. I highly recommend it from here, will definitely be going back when visiting Japantown again. Oh! and thank you to the young lady taking my order for asking me if regular milk was ok, because I had forgotten to ask for oat milk instead, really appreciated that.
I love this place! I have a regular restaurant client in the Fillmore (I do plant care), and I always look forward to coming here during my job site visits. They have thee best flavored seasonal coffees, and the service is friendly and always super quick. Plus the plants seem to be so well taken care of which is a huge plus for me! haha. Long story short: tasty good and great service. 10/10 would recommend!
Unique coffee shop that attracts regular customers as well as visitors to the Fillmore Street area. This place was well worth the long walk from my hotel on Van Ness Avenue. Erica provided friendly and helpful service when ordering as there were several coffee and tea options that I was not familiar with the names. I ended up with a cardamom rose latte and was fully satisfied with the choice. The place is somewhat cramped, with limited inside seating, but that is to be expected in San Francisco, and there are tables outside on the sidewalk. Compton's offers a positive experience and alternative to the chain coffee and tea bars.
Came here on a Saturday morning and the line was long and out the door and the place itself is pretty loud and cramped inside, so I grabbed my drink to go. I ordered a latte with oat milk and added the peppermint syrup from their holiday menu, and easily one of the best lattes I’ve had. What really made it work was how subtle the peppermint was. It wasn’t sweet or candy cane like at all but more herbal. And despite all the chaos, the baristas were super friendly. The person taking my order was especially helpful and patient. This was the perfect drink for a cold SF morning and a long walk afterward. Worth the line for me, at least for that peppermint latte.
I've tried the latte and flat white here. Both times, my drink came out at the perfect temperature - hot but not tongue-scalding. The espresso was *strong*, and the steamed milk had the perfect creamy mouthfeel, with an extra bonus of pretty art. It was quite busy when we stopped by shortly before lunchtime on a Saturday. There was a line out the door, but it moved quickly; it took a bit longer to get our drinks, but understandable given their popularity. There's some seating inside and outside. The staff we interacted with were all lovely. I wish I lived closer to Compton's so I could go more often!
We were in the neighborhood and looking for coffee. We were pleasantly surprised by this cute little cafe. We got the cappucino and the Flat White, both were really good! There was decent amount of seating inside and outside but it was fairly crowded even though we went around closing time.
I tried the lavender latte, and it was absolutely delightful! The rich coffee paired perfectly with the subtle floral notes, making for a truly enjoyable drink. Not only was the latte fantastic, but the service was also top-notch. I highly recommend giving it a try!
Excellent, smooth coffee! Have been here twice and each time the service was super friendly, fast, and felt very welcoming. I had an oat flat white each time and both times it was smooth and strong. Sat outside and got to enjoy a little music, too!
Nice little coffee joint with fast and friendly service. I tried their capacinno, and it is among the best I had. Place is tiny, so it is hard to find a place to sit inside. They have some limited seating outside, which is also always occupied. Overall, it's a good spot to sit and soak up san francisco vibes! Place has one restroom, but usually, there is a line during rush hour.
Lovely café with excellent drinks! Their seasonal drink menu is always special, with my favorite drink ever made coming from there. The vibes inside and outside are nice, although you’ll be luckily to get a table inside.
Very cute coffee store. Have limited indoor and outdoor seats. Super dog friendly. We ordered Amaricano and Ice Latte, and both taste very well. This place does get busy on the weekend, so be prepared for waiting in line.
Fantastic coffee and pastries! It’s not always easy to find good vegan dessert options but I loved the vegan zucchini chocolate bread. It was just the right amount of sweetness! The drip coffee was also really good! Will be back to try other desserts and lattes. The space inside is cute as well
The best, no wonder they are so busy and the flow of people is constant! I don’t go to coffee shops often and was so consumed by a variety of drinks that I forgot to ask for vegan milk! I was waiting when line is going to disappear and people were coming and coming! I went to the back where are ready drinks get distributed and told about my mistake - a guy offered to make a new one without a blink of an eye, on a crazy busy Sunday morning - this is so sweet and kind, definitely made my day! Their multi-layered Kouign-amann is delicious and a perfect sized - to feel full and not overeat! Matcha is not sweetened but they can sweeten it for you, or you can sweeten it yourself which what I did using their station on the right. To sum up, delicious drinks, welcoming kind superstar staff, LGBTG friendly, vegan friendly (please add at least one plant-based pastry). Limited seating though, definitely have seen people working but I would guess you need to come early if you want to reserve a table, definitely RECOMMEND! They have 3-4 tables outside but SF weather is not always great, if you don’t mind then it’s a win for you!

Latte with hint of earl grey with almond milk was delightful. Service was very friendly. It was a bit of a wait around noon on Sunday, but worth it!
I don't review things often, but felt I absolutely had to when I visited Compton's last week. To start, the coffee was fantastic (which I had hoped considering they source their beans from my favorite NY roaster Variety Coffee) but even so, not every shop trains their staff / sets up their espress to be great but judging from our drinks, that care and dedication was certainly evident! The staff was also incredibly friendly and the vibe was great in the shop. What inspired me to write this review though was the prices. Not just of the drinks, but also their merchandise. My decently sized Iced Americano was $3.50 and the branded mug I bought was $10! Most places have charged me $5+ dollars for an iced american and $20-$25+ for mugs or tumblers. Bravo to the shop for keeping everything affordable during this insane time of inflation and mark ups. I'm originally from the Bay Area but have been living in LA / NY for the past 15 years. Like Compton's namesake / founder, I was also a barista at Peet's for a long time starting in 2008 and considering that I also want to open a shop one day, coming here and seeing that you can have high quality drinks and a community feel while keeping everything affordable is more than inspiring.
the best. great coffee, wifi, often crowded but it's rare that I can't get a seat. not too expensive. I often come here with my laptop to work. no one sticks around for too long, there's a good amount of seating and seats rotate enough. they sell mugs, beans, coffee accoutrements and merch. friendly staff! there is a bathroom.

Okay coffee, the desserts looked tasty :) I just had a drip coffee but I’ll be sure to come back with my boyfriend and try out more things :)) The atmosphere is very busy, and there’s a bunch of people on their laptops (almost everyone inside) which is ruining the mood a bit, but it’s good if you’re looking for a place to check your emails or work remotely.
This was a welcome stop on my walking tour of SF. The barista asked if it was to go or for here, and I'm glad to see a comfortable, reusable porcelain cup for the "here" customers. The staff helped me find an outlet for my phone as I sipped. The coffee was a little more acidic for my taste; that is a preference. It was very good coffee. The price was lower than I expected.
December 2025 American cafe with friendly neighborhood feels. A good selection of drink options as well as single origin beans 🫘. Counter service is standard. Place has a community feel with limited seating due to a number of remote working diners. Al fresco area available.
One of my literal favorite cafes in SF!! Such a friendly vibe + cute atmosphere (been to both locations). They charge +0.75 for non dairy milk (BOOO) but the coffee is good and the baristas are so friendly! love this place and will be a repeat customer
Found this coffee ☕️ shop after watching sunrise. It is a nice local little coffee shop. Looks like many are regular and live in neighborhood. Service was quick. The latte is not that strong. Pastries are yummy. It is pet friendly coffee shop.
Had lunch in Japantown and came here after for an Americano and hazelnut chocolate croissant. Inside seating was filled with remote workers with their wall of Mac Book Pros and Air lids propped open. Found a tiny cafe table outdoors with 2 chairs. Soaked in the sun in 50 degree weather. Enjoyed the people-watching. Coffee drink was good. Baked good was okay.

Cortado and almond croissant were good. Service was also good. But I’m reserving 5-stars for mind-blowing places whose food/coffee reminds me of my favorite spots in Paris. EDIT: Got the green iced tea a couple days later and it tasted over-brewed, but I drank it without complaining because they seemed busy on the espresso machine.
Cute, cozy cafe with stellar coffee and lovely vibes! I dropped by Compton’s Coffee House for a quick mid-workday coffee meeting, and it was the perfect venue. The coffee was rich and nutty, they had plenty of alternative milk options, and the space was cozy but pristine. There isn’t a ton of seating, but we were lucky enough to snag a small table; it’s small enough that I wouldn’t recommend trying to squeeze two laptops on the same table for a long period of time, but it’s definitely workable. The team was quite friendly as well, and I’m super excited to come back for more coffee adventures!

Honestly pretty average coffee with a cashier that really didn’t want to be there. I asked if the matcha latte had any expresso and they said it did not, which is contrary to what I thought so I paid an extra $1.00 for one shot. Got the latte and it didn’t hit any expectations well. It wasn’t that hot, it had just a bit of matcha taste (for what the dark green color looked like, it should have had more matcha flavor) and it didn’t even taste like there was coffee in it. Also it’s alright for a single person to work from but the tables aren’t really for having more than one person at each
I love coffee, I think most shops in SF have a set standard that they’re pretty good at adhering to. I unfortunately had a bad experience, the service was great but I ordered an iced latte in my own cup and what I was given was potentially accidentally steamed milk that was then thrown into my iced latte. It was soy milk and was a warm goopy texture. I’ve worked in coffee for 10 years, I ran Fellows storefront for 2 years so I have a good grasp on what to expect when ordering coffee. It did not taste good and was surprised someone could make a careless mistake and be okay with serving it. I think it’s a cute shop and I’ve gotten a good single origin shot from here before but I think I’m good after this experience.
Coffee was so ridiculously hot I needed 2 cups and a sleeve and still could barely hold it. First sip burned the top of my mouth and still hurts days later. Wth?! Even when it cooled it was relatively weak tasting. Way too many other coffee shop options to deal with this nonsense.
