There for a private party. Everything was so fantastic. The staff are very kind, attentive and knowledgeable. And the food was phenomenal. OMG good. Such a great place. I'd go back for a regular meal. Full bar. Just plain old good. Loved it.
Went there for dinner at 6pm, made a reservation earlier that day. We were seated promptly. It was very crowded at the bar, seems like happy hour crowd. Tables up the stairs were not full yet. I had the same thing I got the only two times I've been here, the pork chop. I really enjoyed it. It was cooked perfectly. Also shared the corn bread, it is really good. By the time we finished all the tables were full and the bar maintained it's crowd. It's a fairly loud place so an intimate conversation will not be had. We were seated next to a middle aged blonde woman who liked to drop f* bombs but it didn't take away from our experience. Definitely recommend this place. The servers were very friendly and efficient.
This gem has a fantastic menu and great drinks. Cool vibes fill the space. I very much enjoyed the cornbread, lamb cheeks over white grits which came with root veggies, and the broccolini. The bread pudding was quite underwhelming. Though it was freshly made, it lacked sweetness and cohesive flavor. The fried chicken is also highly rated.
Fast and friendly service, the food and drinks were delicious too. The complimentary cornbread was just the ticket to get the night started; not too heavy and not too sweet. The shrimp and grits were what I'd been looking forward to and the praline tart with dulche de leche sauce and ice cream was in perfect proportions.
There is something about restaurants on alleyways off the main beat that makes them even better...less crowded, better quality, not as overrun with tourists. Hops & Hominy is one of those places. Absolutely delicious, fresh ingredients. And their chipotle "hopsauce" (hot sauce) REALLY packs an awesome kick to go with their spicy chicken sandwich. It's even for sale! Totally recommended for a light lunch alone, or a quiet date night. Just DELICIOUS food!!
Been here many many times. Excellent service, great southern influenced comfort food with some healthier San Francisco posed options on the menu. Great cocktails, rotating beer selection with local drafts and often updated wine list. Fried chicken is the thing to get here, but today I went with a selection of appetizers. Super delicious soup of the day, ham croquettes and chicken wings. All very tasty!
A fun place with a great range of food and drinks options. The staff are great and helpful in making selections. I highly recommend the fried chicken. If you want a great drink option, try the bacon infused Manhattan. Both are outstanding!
In need of a good craft beer and burger, I headed to Hops & Hominy. It’s a bit quiet during the day, so there was a sedate but welcoming vibe. There’s some interesting craft beers on tap and a short food menu that had many tasty bites. I had the impossible burger and an IPA, so mission accomplished.
Loved it. Good atmosphere, busy and lively. Food is good and has good southern flavours. Had fried oysters and wings. Both really good, but the complementary corn bread brought it over the top. Would go back for sure.
I came here with two friends after work for a drink. We ended up getting a table and they brought the most delicious complimentary cornbread over. We decided to get wings and fried pickles with our beers. We sat in their outdoor seating area which was lovely, and we were not ignored by the waitstaff (as one might expect from a primarily indoor dining area with a few outdoor seats). The indoor area seemed nice and cozy, too. I'll come back!
Loved my experience here! Great drinks, great food, great staff. 100% recommend to a friend and I'll definitely be stopping by when I'm in town again.
Chef is amazing. Creative and delicious menu. Great place for dinner with friends. A highlight of our visit to San Francisco.
Hard to find but worth trying! Main entrance next to the funky shoe store. Had one of the best oyster po'boys in my life. Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside. Came with fries but it's all about the sandwich.
The food was really good for the most part. Our party had the fried chicken n everyone loved it. Two others got the wings n fries. Wings were good just small but meaty. The wings were free range. We are use to big portions in America...lol the waiter was SUPER nice n polite. We LOVED him. I had the broccolini(sp) I would not recommend. Not on the menu and i did not like it. The portion was also small for the $9 surprise. Good customer service here!! My party also loved the corn on the cob n cornbread! I would recommend to give them a try for sure!
You won't be dissatisfied! Bustling spot with a warm atmosphere. The cornbread is good, the garlic fries are excellent, the burger is well done. I came for the superior drink selection, and will be back for the beer and delightful fare.
The Staff: So incredibly attentive! The Food: Really flavorful, great options! small plates to share along with standard plate options. Ambiance: All good Price: Perfect for what you get We had the Mac n Cheese, brussel sprouts, wings, cornbread, fried oysters, and fresh lemonade. All so good! enough for us three to share and get full Dessert: Bread pudding and root beer float we are not bread pudding folks, however, this was impressively amazing. YUM. We will be back very soon to try more dishes!
Nice large place in the heart of the shopping district in Union square. It's got a great cocktail menu and the bartenders are very good. I had the corpse reviver and it had very happy very quickly. I dig the complementary corn bread with honey butter. It comes hot in a cast iron pan and it's perfect with the fried appetizers and drinks
Excellent burger and fries. Got seated at the Chef's table which was a nice experience. The corn bread is great too!
Location is really cool, it's in an alley with great outdoor lighting. Interior feel is great and even the bathrooms are pretty interesting. I got the fried chicken (limited time I think) and it was awesome. Friendly staff and great drink selection as well, would definitely go back.
Great food. Mac and Cheese is some of the best Mac I've had in the city. Their complementary corn bread us also great.
We got into the city late in the day and we’re starving. Hops & Hominy was busy but got us in quickly. The beer was tasty and the food was great. The catfish po’ boy was exactly what I needed with crispy delicious fries, the photo doesn’t do it justice (lighting was great for ambiance, not so great for food photos). We also had the side of sautéed radishes and even though radishes aren’t my first choice of food these were extremely yummy! I feel like I have a whole new appreciation for this fast growing little root. I would highly suggest Hops & Hominy if you’re in the area!
Great beer selection and being from SD they were definitely representing. The staff and service is top notch and the food is down home comfort. A must visit as you roll through SF.
The ambiance and the service put it this place at a five, they do as good of a job representing southern cooking as you can on the west coast. The corn bread is top notch!
The food was amazing. Service was great. That lemonade was delicious. No complaints from Boston (that's a first)
Great atmosphere and the ribs are stellar. Service is top notch with great drinks and some of the best corn bread
Great food and service. Tip: fried chicken dries out out quickly if you're outside in the cold!
Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere. Staff was amazing and attentive. Just the bread, drinks, and appetizer alone as great
We enjoyed everything including the atmosphere, but the ribs really stood out!
My wife and I went to Hops and Hominy in June this year for dinner while visiting from overseas. It was a weekend and we had no reservation and got there fairly early. Although they were quite busy they had no trouble accommodating us and we were able to get a table outside (probably made a bit easier as it was just the 2 of us). The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and beverage menu (some great craft beers). Drink and food service were both prompt and we had no issues at all. Over all the service was great. We had the mac and cheese to start which was bangin. If you are thinking about it, do it! I had the shrimp and grits which was fairly tasty and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich which was AMAZING! As we were sitting outside I can’t comment too much about the decor of the venue. The brief moment I walked inside to pay, it seemed alright though. Anyway if you are in the area and want great food and beer you need to hit this place up!!!
The restaurant occupies an interesting nook off the road, which provides for nice outdoor dining possibilities away from the road. Great beer and drink selection. The menu was deep and had lots of items I wish I could have ordered (only have one stomach). I would definitely come back next time I am in town. When busy, it can be pretty loud but not overly so.
Incredible food. Just what was needed after a long flight. Ordered the burger and the chicken sandwich, both of which I would recommend. Also got fried pickles which were amazing. Looks like they had a lot of beer on tap and a large selection of alcohol to choose from at the bar. Went at 1 o’clock for lunch and had plenty of seating, will definitely be craving this place!
This is such a great place! Very social and fun, sometimes a bit noisy, but the atmosphere is fantastic. But the food is why you should come here. We had one of the best dining experiences during our 4 week USA road trip. The lamb cheeks were so tender and the ribeye, big and tasteful, was one of the best ever eaten. The corn bread from the house is a very nice appetizer. OK, the wines-by-the-glass are not cheap - go for the interesting beer menu instead if you prefer - but the excellent service and the great food make everything to a great evening. Highly recommended!
Ate here while on vacation at the recommendation of a friend who lives in SF. I liked that the food had all the comfort of Southern fare without feeling heavy and super bad for you. We ate family style to try a bunch of dishes. The two proteins of fried chicken and pork chop were hearty pieces of meat and tasty. Arugula salad really cut through the fried foods and was a good, clean pairing. I also enjoyed the whiskey drinks they made.
Came here at 6pm on a Thursday and was pretty full - was told we could get a table but needed to leave at 720 (which was fine) Food was very good - they serve a corn bread with whipped honey butter and that was absolutely delicious. We also had the ribs, pork chop and ribs and again very impressed. Only problem was service wasn't so great, not horrible just not that good either. Still would recommend trying
This is a go-to place for us when we're in downtown SF. Great food and drinks. Love the corn bread. Great place to take visitors.
I give this restaurant four out of five stars for one reason. The food here at this restaurant is delicious! They offer a different menu every day I believe and it verys and everything is organic food. They have a full bar and a lot of open seating! It was very quick for me to be seated in this restaurant. The host that sat me down was a male very very cool and polite Man! But here is the reason I give it four out of five. My waitress, a heavier set lady with short red hair. Was as dumb as dirt. (Sorry not sorry) first off she was really rude. Rushed me when it came to ordering but then when I ordered an appetizer at first I ordered they’re cast iron Mac n cheese. But without bacon! And of course it came out fast and very hot! But since she was in such a rush it came out with bacon! I then waited for about 30 minutes trying to get her attention to take the food back and bring me what I ordered and she said that she couldn’t swap my order out. I have never experienced such horrible service at a restaurant like this ever in my life! Super unfortunate because the food and I’m sure other servers are professional but even the table next to me had a issue. So food wise five stars! The bar is pretty pricy but for the amount of food and type of food they offer it’s a steal! Price range appetizers (8-16$) entrees (17-36$) drinks are super expensive! One shot of cheap tequila was $22.00 but they give you free cornbread lol!
Ah another restaurant I really like, albeit a bit pricey - like most SF restaurants. There's just way too many in San Francisco. I love that there's a good happy hour selection. Great appies ranging from fried oysters, to hearty salads, and also delicious Mac and Cheese! It was so good - the oysters were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside but not squishy. The Mac and cheese was very cheesy with a breading on top. My favorite cocktails are the Gin and Jam and Bees Knees. The mix was not overly sweet and overpowering. The Bees Knees drink came in an adorable bears glass, and also I could even taste a subtle roses from the rose they used as the garnish of mixed into the drink. There's also a beer, wine and dessert wines selection. Would come back.
I came here for a happy hour after work on a weeknight. Luckily it wasn’t super crowded and I was able to grab us a spot at the communal standing bar. I went for the Connie’s Punch which is one of their cocktails and it was really good. If you like sweet and fruity (which I do), this is the drink for you. The atmosphere is dim lighting and hipterish vibe (drinks in mason jars), but it was chill. Overall, cool place to grab a SF priced drink.
I'm a fan of Hops. Great chill spot to sit outdoors (recommended when it's hot) as it can get pretty toasty inside. As for the aura of the spot, it's a great place to kick back, relax with friends, or go on a date. For the food, it's good. Not amazing or mind blowing, but it's tasty. The fried chicken was a bit try. The carbonara was decently filling with pork. The BBQ ribs were a bit dry. Add a bit of the house hot sauce and it makes a big difference. The service here is also great - super kind waitress who was attentive. I'd definitely come back to grab a quick bite with some friends, or have a few glasses of wine!
Long wait but good thing we don’t have to wait there. Like that they texted us when table is available and location is convenient. Food and ambience of restaurant is good. The waiter pretty much ignored us most the time so not much to say about the service
So, after the 555 California Christmas tree lighting i had dinner at Hops & Hominy. My reservation was for 8:30. I arrived a little early and sat down to wait because my table wasn't ready. A few minutes later I asked for a glass of water. They were grudgingly gracious but the norm, as far as my experience goes in SF, is to be offered a beverage while I wait. At this place I sure would have liked to be offered a beer. Maybe since I'm older (47) I don't look like their popular/standard demographic so that threw them off? Not sure. But read on. The saga continues. They weren't exactly put out about it but there was certainly an attitude, affected or otherwise, by the hostess with the short hair and adorable red boots and grey sweater dress. Anyway, in time I was seated but i waited quite some time to be greeted by a server. To be fair, my dining companion hadn't arrived but offering a drink before they get there is usually pretty standard, too. Anyway, someone finally showed and I asked to taste 4 of the beers they have on draught. I was told that he could sneak a couple of tastes my way but they weren't set up to offer additional tastes. I was surprised and disappointed but I chose the requisite 2 and complied albeit unhappily. One of the biggest reasons I chose H&H was to try the extensive and unique beer selection. Then the server did me a solid and brought the other 2 tastes. His tip reflected his graciousness. I ordered the Mac & cheese. It was forgettable at best. No real flavor save for the bacon on top. You can get better at Rex in Berkeley. Then I ordered the ham hock croquettes. Also forgettable. Dry and kind of tasteless. Then i ordered the black bean fritters. FANTASTIC! Texture was wonderful and the accompanying sauce was out of this world. I paired all of this with a gose first and then a very unique saison. Both wonderful beers chosen largely based on the tastes the server slyly slipped my way. You may be thinking, why 4 stars if it wasn't that great? Well, because while my experience could have been better I'm giving H&H the benefit of the doubt. Mine may have been a singular experience or maybe just a rough night for them. I'm going back again to find out!
Sat outside and enjoyed the corn bread along with their Po Boy and fries. Everything was very tasty and the Po Boy had good flavor.
Foods good. But a bun shouldn't be bigger than the burger.
I had high expectations before trying this place as I've heard really good things about the fried chicken. We ended up ordering it, and found that it was good but not exceptional. I think it was lacking a bit in flavor, not quite as juicy as I would have hoped and maybe needing a bit more salt. However, the rest of the experience was really good, we came for a private party and renting out the addition area was perfect for a large group dinner. Solid appetizers (fried oysters were solid) as well! Overall a good experience.
Great drinks and the fried chicken was good. I liked the cornbread that came with the table. Burger was delicious. Definitely great comfort food and would love to try more here. It was really busy even at 9pm. We had no reservations but they were able to seat us.
Lovely tasting southern style food in a good location. The place was bustling when we arrived, but we were seated quickly. Good servers gave way to good food, and a pleasant evening overall. I had the shrimp and grits, and still think about them longingly from time to time. Beer and wine selection was also good.
Great little place of the main Street. Apt beer selection and southern inspired cuisines. Worth a look.
I was really excited about coming here. We made reservations a few days head of time for dinner and was promptly seated on arrival. The menu is small. You're served a skillet cornbread. We shared a beet salad, there was way too much leafy greens and not enough beets. The best dish of the night was their fried chicken. Both the hook and line fish and the shrimp and grits was disappointing. The fish was very bland and a bit on the fishy side. The serving size of the fish was also on the small side for $28. I think the shrimp and grits at Brenda's is way better. Then on to dessert, the freezer was broken so there was only one item we could order. All in all good service, average food.
Very cool speakeasy vibe, located in an alley to boot. But that's about as good as it gets. While the space is hip, and the service is friendly, I found the food and cocktails wanting.. I really wanted it to be better, but it wasn't.
Food was okay. Service was horrible. Apparently they changed the price of the menu awhile ago, but never updated the price on their actual menu. So our bill ended up being 15 bucks extra than what is says on the menu. The waitress was giving us excuses by saying the price have been updated for a long time and refused to void our bill and gave us a new one. Don't come here for the horrible service and small portion of food
